          What Cranbourne Races

          When Friday, January 27, 2023
          First Race 6:15pm AEDT

          Visit Ladbrokes

Friday evening racing will return to Cranbourne Turf Club this week with a competitive eight-race program. The track is currently rated a Good 4 with warm weather forecast for Melbourne and surrounds, so we expect to be racing on a Good track come Friday. The rail will be in the in the +3m position from the 1000m mark to the winning post and in the true position for the remainder of the circuit. The first race will jump at 6:15pm AEDT.
          Best Bet at Cranbourne: Squami

Our best bet at Cranbourne will be the Simon Zahra-trained Squami who has finished in the top four at all three of his starts this preparation, including a win at Terang over 1200m two starts back on December 20. After leading the field up at Cranbourne last start, this son of Squamosa was run over in the final 100m by Galactic Fury who came home from the back of the field and looked to have run out the 1300m slightly stronger. Simon Zahra and his team have chosen to drop this five-year-old gelding back to the 1200m on Friday and if he can find the lead once again, he will be fit enough to run out a strong 1200m. With Tramontana being the other leading contender in the race, we expect to see both of them take the lead and try and kick away on the home turn. Damien Thornton has ridden this gelding at all three of his starts this time in and there will be no difference on Friday.

Next Best at Cranbourne: Drake Passage

In the third leg of the quaddie we will be siding with the Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young-trained Drake Passage who is coming off a nice win over 1629m at Werribee on January 7. This four-year-old gelding has recorded two wins and two placings from his nine career starts, with eight of his nine starts coming over 1600m plus. This son of Jakkalberry was very good first-up at Werribee where he ran away from his rivals to record an easy 2.75 length victory over Tactfull. During the run this gelding settled just worse than midfield and rounded the field up on the home turn to kick clear and win easily with a lot in the tank. Patrick Moloney will stick and from barrier one, he should have this guy in midfield position on the rail, just needing luck on the home bend. If this gelding gets the luck in running, he will be running home strong to stake his claim in the final 200m of the 2025m event.

          Best Value at Cranbourne: Nakedness

In the second leg of the quaddie John McArdle will bring his three-year-old gelding, Nakedness, to Cranbourne after winning his last start at Mornington over 1500m on January 8. This son of So You Think ran second on debut at Yarra Valley over 1200m where he showed that he was looking for more ground, which is what he received next start at Mornington. At his most recent start, this gelding sat behind the speed on the rails before peeling off the leaders back to run away with a nice maiden win. Jamie Mott will take the reins on this gelding for the first time on Friday and from barrier three this guy should settle just behind the leaders and try to replicate his last-start maiden win.

            When Friday, January 27, 2023
            First Race 6pm AEDT

            Visit Ladbrokes

Racing heads to the Tasmanian Turf Club on Friday night for a nine-race program where the Listed Launceston Guineas takes centre stage. Despite the rail being out 4.5m the entire circuit and the track coming up a Soft 5 for racing, we expect every runner to get their chance if good enough, with the track to play fairly throughout as it has been in recent times.

The big night of racing in the ‘Apple Isle’ kicks off at 6pm AEDT.
            Launceston Guineas: Dunkel

It does not take a genius to put Dunkel on top in the Listed Launceston Guineas. Patrick Payne’s three-year-old gelding has essentially been perfect in his four-start career, winning on three occasions and despite the plenty going wrong for him at his second start, he had the audacity to still finish second. This bloke should essentially be 4/4 and a win in the Listed Tasmanian Guineas beckons barring any bad luck. His win at Flemington on January 14 was breathtaking and considering he gave Soul Choice, who he meets again on Friday night, a start and a smacking, he should prove too good for his rivals once again. He gave Soul Choice 6.5kg’s last start and only has to give her 2kg this time around. In the small field of six, only bad luck gets Dunkel beaten in Friday night’s feature.

            3yo Gelding | T: Patrick Payne | J: Harry Coffey (57kg)

            $1.40 with Palmerbet
Best Bet at Launceston: Bello Beau

Despite this being Bello Beau’s first start against older horses, the Adam Trinder-trained three-year-old gains our best bet tag on Friday night. The Brazen Beau gelding comfortably accounted for all but the smart Russian Roni in the Tasmanian Guineas last time out and looks well placed to go one better in this on Friday. Harry Coffey jumps on the back of the progressive youngster for the first time and considering he has won six from nine and finished second on two other occasions, this guys just oozes class. Look for Coffey to use his early speed to negate barrier 11 and take up the running. Under a well-rated steer, we expect Bello beau to pack too many punches late on in the piece.
            Best Bet

            Race 7 – Silks#12 Bello Beau (11)

            3yo Gelding | T: Adam Trinder | J: Harry Coffey (55kg)

            $3.40 with Neds
            Next Best at Launceston: Elmajay

Stuart Gandy sends his three-year-old filly Elmajay to the Launceston 1200m following a couple of decent performances to begin this campaign. She has placed at her both of her runs this time in and has been given a sight out in front. From barrier two, Troy Baker will have this girl in the lead not long after the barriers open and with a few of her main market rivals drawn out, we’re hoping the tactical advantage from the low barrier draw will prove to be the difference. The Wordsmith filly was only picked off in the shadows of the winning post on the Devonport Synthetic last time out and considering she is third-up from a spell, Elmajay should prove too hard to run down with race fitness on her side.

Best Value at Launceston: Alpine Affair

With a bit of luck, we can bow out in style on Friday night when the John Blacker-trained Alpine Affair steps out over 1400m in the last. The four-year-old gelding has managed to win three of his seven starts this campaign and with Jordan Childs hopping on board, we’re hoping he can bring up a fourth victory this time in. He needs the race to be run at a genuine tempo considering he is a backmarker and with Diamond Bay a known leader and being drawn out wide, he should gain just what he wants. His turn of foot is arguably one of the best in the race and if he is within striking distance with 300m to go, Alpine Affair looks too hard to hold out.

Main ticket: (in order of preference): 1-Irish Prophet; 7-Dancing Rinca
              Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Older maidens meet over a mile on grass in the Friday opener in which trainer Neil Drysdale holds the aces with the two contenders. Irish Prophet earned a career top speed figure when fifth, beaten less than a length, in a similar affair at Del Mar in November and sports a healthy, steady series of workouts in recent weeks to have him fit and ready. He’s guaranteed an ideal ground-saving trip from his favorable rail draw, retains leading rider Juan Hernandez, and projects to be withing striking range throughout. Stablemate Dancing Rinca was second, beaten a neck, when worn down late in the same race our top pick exits, and likely will be taken back early and allowed to run late. With some help up front, he is sure to be heard from in the final furlong.

Main ticket: (in order of preference): 3-Naughty Evelyn; 4-Awesome Pamela
              Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Naughty Evelyn has been away since last May but projects as the controlling speed, and if not policed during the early stages she could take this restricted (nw-2) $16,000 field gate to wire. This low profile barn doesn’t win many but Umberto Rispoli knows this veteran mare well and hopefully will be able to hold her together in the final furlong. Awesome Pamela likes this main track (in the frame in four of five career starts) and is the most dangerous of the closing types. She’s a one-paced grinder but has numbers that fit and is a “must use” in rolling exotic play.

Main ticket (in order of preference): 6-Sassy Nature
              Backups/savers: 4-Devil Among Us

Forecast: Sassy Nature toyed with state-bred maiden fillies over this track and distance three weeks ago and returns on the one level raise while this time facing the boys. The daughter of Straight Fire was never off the bridle when coasting home to register a nine length score in a race that produced a powerful Beyer speed figure, and anything close to that performance will be more than good enough for a repeat score. If you would prefer to have some protection, you should also consider Devil Among Us as a saver just in case the favorite goes backwards. The Phil D’Amato-trained colt looked decent when graduating last month at Los Alamitos in what has proven to be a productive race, and while he’s much slower on figures than the filly he certainly should have plenty of room for further improvement.

Main ticket (in order of preference): 6-Violet Crown; 8-Love Our Family
              Backups/Savers: none

Forecast: Best suggestion is to tread lightly here. Six of the nine entrants in this mile grass affair for state-bred maiden fillies exit the same race captured by Nyvan earlier this month, and none of them did anything particularly noteworthy behind the winner other than clunk up for a minor award in a slow, low-rated affair. In that race, Violet Crown was bumped hard off stride when trying to rally at the furlong pole and probably should have finished closer than fifth (beaten four and one-half lengths). It was her sixth career start and her numbers have stagnated but of the group she ran at least as well as runner-up Love Our Family, who made the lead as the controlling speed before proving little match for the winner. Rolling exotic players should at least use these two, plus anything else that you’d like to toss in.

Main ticket (in order of preference): 3-Midnight Vow
              Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Midnight Vow exits a much better race – a maiden optional $40,000 claimer as opposed to this straight $40,000 affair – and based on numbers should be able to outrun this modest group. The Hector Palma-trained daughter of Broken Vow projects as the controlling speed based on our early fractional analysis, and if she can shake loose early without pressure it would be no surprise to see her wire the field. In a race in which nothing else catches the eye, let’s use her in the win pool and as a rolling exotic single.

Main ticket (in order of preference): 4-Mi Hermano Ramon
              Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Mi Hermano Ramon won his debut last month at Del Mar around two turns like a high quality grass prospect and returns in this five runner non-winners of two Hillside Turf Course sprint to prove he can sprint as well as he routes. Based on his workouts since his win, the son of Creative Cause should have no difficulty with the turn back in trip. Similar to his first start, we’re expecting to see him relax off the pace during the early stages and then cut loose when given his cue. We’ll make him a strong win play and rolling exotic single.

Main ticket (in order of preference): 3-Saffa’s Day
              Backups/savers: 6-As Amatter of Fact

Forecast: Saffa’s Day drops to the $32,000 level in his second start since being claimed for $50,000 by trainer Mark Glatt, certainly not a confidence-building maneuver, but in a weak race for the level the son of Carpe Diem can outrun this group with anything close to his best. Bug boy Aguilar stays aboard and should have this gelding close to the projected modest pace, perhaps even in front. On pure numbers, he’s the best of the lot, and having finished first or second in six of 15 career starts he’s always been fairly dependable when properly spotted. As Amatter of Fact seems likely to settle within striking range outside and then have every chance from the quarter pole home. The Union Rags gelding was well clear of the rest when second at this level at Del Mar in November in an effort that charts quite well with these, but his work tab since then has been noticeably spotty. If ready, he’ll be a factor.

              RACE 8: Post: 4:00 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 1-Circleofchampions; 3-Flint Stroll
              Backups/savers: 4-So I’m Told; 6-Derecho Dandy

Forecast: Circleofchampions produced a career top speed figure when second in a restricted (nw-2) $32,000 claimer at Del Mar in November and returns protected in a sign of confidence while landing a favorable inside draw over a course he’s run well on in the past. A steady series of workouts should tick him over nicely, so let’s put the Carla Gaines-trained gelding on top and hope that he’s allowed to display the type of tactical speed that puts him on or near the lead throughout. Flint Stroll goes for new connections following a $32,000 claim when second at 3/5 over the local lawn three weeks ago. He’s solid on numbers and picks up top rider Juan Hernandez, so the son of Flintshire is certain to get plenty of play again. So I’m Told may lack a winning punch but he’s usually in the thick of things late and should at least get a piece of it. Derecho Dandy shows up in a starter $50,000 optional claimer after a four race series of disappointing sixth place finishes when facing allowance foes, and it’s hard to know if this is his proper level. His only win was accomplished in gate-to-wire fashion, so perhaps those tactics will be employed, but after making a clear lead in an all-weather race up north last month the son of Connect got run over and stopped to a walk. We’ll toss him in on a ticket as backup but nothing more than that.

Al Cimaglia: Meadowlands Early Pick 4 Analysis

                January 27, 2023 | By Al Cimaglia

The Meadowlands has a competitive 14-race card scheduled. The 0.50 Early Pick 4 starts in Race 6. The sequence has a $50,000 guaranteed pool with a 15% takeout, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

                Race 6

1-Gottalovemyshadow (5-1)-Steps up after a sharp score from the 8-hole on 1-22. This is a veteran who has done good work at M1 over the years (47-9-8-5) and will look for another top effort.
7-Onecrookedleg (6-1)-Raced well in 2 straight, then took a double bump up and was stuck with post 10. Willing to toss that start, fits better here, and gets a new pilot in Andrew McCarthy.

                Race 7

1-Laurie Lee (9/2)-Recent form has been dull but drops again and should be in play with this post draw. Might be overlooked and could get a suck-round trip.
4-Addictivebehaviour (7/2)-Even try in last to finish 3rd although beaten only a neck. Was off 3 weeks before the last race and should be tighter here. Could be bet down but difficult to leave off the ticket.
5-A Better Game (3-1)-The race could be chalky and this mare should be a player at this level. The 1 & 8 should offer a better price but can be right there at the wire.
8-Skateboard Chic (6-1)-This 11-year-old comes off a strong effort and posted its first M1 picture. Has only made 4 starts here and bumps up but will look for another big try at a square price.

                Race 8

3-Coolncalculating N (12-1)-Comes off 2 even performances after a sick scratch and did race better last week. This will be a test but does pick up McCarthy so will take a swing, and look for a big try at a price.
5-Lightning Leia (6-1)-Takes a significant drop and lands in the same class as a gate to wire win at M1 on 12-8. Mark MacDonald gets the assignment and will look for an aggressive steer, hopefully at a solid price.
6-Lady Rocknrolla A (3-1)-Also drops to the same level as a recent win. Has been in sharp form, winner in 5 of 6 starts, the last 3 at M1 and should be a player but could be over bet.

                Race 9

2-Lenswoods Real Deal (9/2)-Comes off an even effort after shipping in from Freehold. Gingras grabs the lines tonight and should offer a fair price. Will likely be racing near the top of the stack and can use one move to roll by down the lane.
8-Safensound Hanover (3-1)-Got a perfect steer from McCarthy last week and closed quickly to pass a few down the lane. Will be bet but comes right back versus the same kind and the post should help the price.

                0.50 Early Pick 4

                1,7/1,4,5,8/3,5,6/2,8

                  Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

                  Fair Grounds - Race #8
                  Picks Notes
#6 Zipping Molly She made just a mild move before fading in the debut run, but that was probably a tough ask to go two turns right out of the box, and I'm betting she'll show something better here.
#1 Easy Aces She's an obvious player in a bad race, but she has been pretty one-paced in her two tries at this level, and I wouldn't be surprised to see someone outkick her here.
#4 Onecallthatsall She has seemed to like the move around two turns in recent starts, and I think she'll be in line for a really good midpack trip here.
Race Summary Not a ton of confidence in those with more experience, and Zipping Molly probably has upside while trying this trip for the second time.

                  Fair Grounds - Race #6
                  Picks Notes
#2 Pursuit L'Harmonie She has run into a couple decent maiden winners since debuting in stakes company here opening weekend, and she has some appeal while getting around two turns on the turf. Probably tough today.
#8 Entitlement She's another going on the turf for the first time here after finishing just behind the top choice last time out, and these two logical players seem like a decent bet to settle this.
#7 Midnight Flame Wouldn't be shocked to see her take a step forward in this one, but she's got a long way to come to land this after a quick-fade debut.
Race Summary Pursuit L'Harmonie should get an okay trip in here if they can find their way off the fence a little bit, and I think she's got some upside while getting more distance to work with.

                  Fair Grounds - Race #7
                  Picks Notes
#3 Tulane Tryst He has some back runs that might make him the right one against the talented chalk, and he absolutely looked like a horse who needed a race last time out -- in hand, cruising up, and then stopping when the more serious running started. Like him a lot here.
#5 Strobe No doubt he's the one to beat with a big pedigree and four sharp efforts to his name from as many starts. Wondering if stakes dropper #2 High Cruise might keep him honest enough early to be vulnerable late? Also wouldn't be a shock to see him win this by five. Tough call at a short price.
#2 High Cruise Pace will probably try to go for it early, but he's likely to have Strobe breathing down his neck the entire way and might be hard pressed to stay for much more than a share here.
Race Summary Tulane Tryst is the obvious alternative to deserving favorite Strobe, and he ran last out like he could be sitting on a much, much improved effort this time around -- and he's got a little class to him compared to the chalk who has run through allowance conditions.

                    Laurel Park - Race #1
                    Picks Notes
#5 CELTIC COUSEN (7-5) Knocking on winning door, blinkers could make the difference.
#6 CROSSLAND (6-1) Ran second from on and off the pace in his last four route races, starts fresh.
#1 RAPPER ZAPPER (2-1) Tracked slow pace, followed move of 3-to-2 winner, missed by a neck.
Race Summary CELTIC COUSEN finished well in all three starts but settled for minor awards at short odds, twice at this distance. His dam was a $216k earner and stakes winner at one mile. He should handle this field, so bet to win and place.

                    Laurel Park - Race #3
                    Picks Notes
#7 BORUFF (7-2) No threat to quality MSW rivals, stepped it up a notch for January works, gets Lasix.
#5 BEST CHOICE BABY (3-1) Rallied for second and third at this level, gets blinkers off claim.
#2 MUNGO MAGIC (5-2) Debuts for Russell; dam finished second in MSW debut and follow-up stakes.
Race Summary BORUFF kept quality Maiden Special Weight company, meeting the likes of recent stakes winner Prince of Jericho (3-5, $148k) and Noah Chance, who won a $40,000 claimer by 6-1/4 lengths Dec. 17. He worked in :48.4 on January 8 and could be forwardly placed on the class drop. He is today’s Best Bet.

                    Laurel Park - Race #7
                    Picks Notes
#4 QUICK QUICK WIT (9-2) Ranged up, hung around for third in improved second start, tries long sprint.
#2 HE’S PURE TALENT (8-1 Debuts for Gonzalez, who also trained dam Mila Jane (7-16, $142k).
#5 SEVEN’S ELEVEN (5-1) Chased 2-1 winner, finished second in game try as first-time gelding.
Race Summary QUICK QUICK WIT’S true colors showed with Lasix in his second start. He circled the turn 4-wide, had aim on the two favorites and settled for third. He must navigate an extra furlong in a potentially strong field, but he offers enough value for a win and place bet.

Play on: Manchester City -133 at linepros

Free Soccer Prediction from Doc’s Sports:
English FA Cup Take Manchester City over Arsenal (3 p.m. EST, Friday January 27)
(Graded after regulation time - 90min - plus injury time - if game ends in a DRAW we have a LOSER) Arsenal is surprisingly atop the Premier League table, but we don’t think they are the better side here. And this is an FA Cup match and not an EPL matchup. But we think the result will be similar to recent meetings between these clubs. Manchester City has a +11 goal differential in the last five matchups regardless of the status of the match. All have been City wins. City is five points back in the EPL and we think when all is said and done that they will be the better side, and we expect their run of dominance in this series to continue on Friday.
