Jon White: Ky Derby Top 10, Plus Southwest and Pegasus Pick

    January 25, 2023 | By Jon White

There is a lot going on regarding my Kentucky Derby Top 10 this week.

To begin with, No. 1 Arabian Knight is headed to Arkansas this week.

Arabian Knight has not raced since his impressive debut in Kentucky last Nov. 5. The Kentucky-bred Uncle Mo colt is one of nine 3-year-olds entered in Oaklawn Park’s Grade III Southwest Stakes, a $750,000 race to be run at 1 1/16 miles this Saturday (Jan. 28).

Arabian Knight is coming off a 97 Beyer Speed Figure. So is Corona Bolt, who is two for two. These two figure to be strongly supported in the wagering Saturday.

Trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, Arabian Knight was a $2.3 million auction purchase. He kicked off his career in the first race on the Nov. 5 Breeders’ Cup card.

“In the first race at Keeneland on Saturday (Nov. 5), Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert unveils a $2.3 million auction purchase by the name of Arabian Knight,” I wrote for Xpressbet.com. “Yes, the Uncle Mo colt is the 2-1 morning-line favorite. But I can tell you that I will be thrilled if he does not go off at lower odds than 2-1 because I will be making a win wager on him no matter how low the price goes.”

I did make a big win wager on Arabian Knight. And as I expected, when he exited the starting gate, his odds were much lower than 2-1.

In my recap of that race for Xpressbet.com, I wrote: “Bet down to 3-5 favoritism, Arabian Knight seized the early lead and bounded home to win by a widening 7 1/4 lengths while completing seven furlongs a splendid 1:21.98. Keep in mind this final time by a 2-year-old in a maiden race was comparable to Goodnight Olive’s 1:21.61 clocking when she won the Grade I BC Filly & Mare Sprint on the same oval and at the same distance later on the card.”

Arabian Knight races for Zedan Racing Stables.

“As Amr Zedan of Zedan Racing Stables began an interview with BloodHorse after the race, Baffert shouted, ‘Tell them they’re going to have to water the track because he dried it out,’ an apparent reference to the colt running like the wind,” wrote BloodHorse’s Byron King.

John Velazquez rode Arabian Knight in the colt’s unveiling. Velazquez was aboard Arabian Knight’s sire, Uncle Mo, in all eight of his career starts, including five victories. Uncle Mo captured the Grade I BC Juvenile at Churchill Downs in 2010. He was voted an Eclipse Award as champion 2-year-old male.

After Arabian Knight’s dazzling debut, Velazquez said the colt reminded him “so much of his sire.” Is it any surprise, then, that Velazquez is making the trip to Oaklawn from California to ride Arabian Knight in the Southwest?

Arabian Knight’s paternal grandsire is Indian Charlie. Trained by Baffert, Indian Charlie won four straight before finishing third as the favorite in the 1998 Kentucky Derby, which was the colt’s only loss in five career starts. The 1998 Run for the Roses was won by the Baffert-trained Real Quiet.

Indian Charlie is the maternal grandsire of now-retired superstar Flightline.

Below are my selections for the Southwest Stakes:

    1. Arabian Knight
    2. Jace’s Road
    3. Corona Bolt
    4. Hit Show

Meanwhile, three-time Grade I winner Forte, who is No. 2 on my Kentucky Derby Top 10, had his first 2023 workout this past Saturday (Jan. 21) in Florida at Palm Beach Downs. The Kentucky-bred Violence colt clocked three furlongs in :38.38 for Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher.

“It was very good,” Pletcher was quoted as saying on the Gulfstream Park website. “It was his first work back, just a nice introductory three-eighths. We’ll probably go a half-mile next week.”

Forte might make his first 2023 start in Gulfstream’s Grade II Fountain of Youth Stakes on March 4.

“We’ve got the Fountain of Youth penciled in as our target and, so far, it’s gone according to plan,” Pletcher said. “We’ve still got a ways to go.”

Forte’s trio of Grade I triumphs last year came in the Hopeful Stakes, Breeders’ Futurity and BC Juvenile.

In the BC Juvenile, 5-1 Forte defeated 2-5 favorite Cave Rock by 1 1/2 lengths. That was Cave Rock’s first defeat after wins by six lengths and 5 1/4 lengths twice for Baffert.

Cave Rock is No. 3 on my Kentucky Derby Top 10. The Kentucky-bred Arrogate colt is expected to have his first 2023 workout soon.

Brad Cox currently trains a bevy of Kentucky Derby candidates. One of them is Instant Coffee, who moves up a notch to No. 6 on my Kentucky Derby Top 10 this week. The Kentucky-bred Bolt d’Oro colt rallied from well off the pace after bobbling a bit at the start to win Fair Grounds’ Grade III Lecomte Stakes going away by 2 1/2 lengths at 1 1/16 miles last Saturday (Jan. 22).

Instant Coffee’s final time was 1:45.12. Thoroughbred Daily News’ T.D. Thornton pointed out that of the six Fair Grounds races at 1 1/16 miles on the card, Instant Coffee recorded the fastest final sixteenth clocking, “running .19 seconds quicker than older Grade III stakes horses in the Louisiana Stakes a half-hour earlier.”

I shied away from making Instant Coffee my top pick in Lecomte selections for Xpressbet.com. The primary reason I didn’t go with him is because he had not recorded a Beyer Speed Figure higher than 85. But what did Instant Coffee do in the Lecomte? He went out there and improved to a 92 Beyer, plenty good enough to get the job done.

Below is my current Kentucky Derby Top 10:

    1. Arabian Knight
    2. Forte
    3. Cave Rock
    4. Banishing
    5. Cyclone Mischief
    6. Instant Coffee
    7. Giant Mischief
    8. Arabian Lion
    9. Verifying
    10. Hejazi

Bubbling Under My Top 10: Angel of Empire, Blazing Sevens, Corona Bolt, Curly Jack, Disarm, Faustin, Hit Show, Jace’s Road, Kingsbarns, Litigate, National Treasure, Newgate, Please Be Nice, Reincarnate, Shopper’s Revenge, Signator, Sun Thunder, Tapit Trice, Worcester and Victory Formation.

FORTE INDIVIDUAL FAVORITE IN DERBY FUTURE WAGER

Not surprisingly, Forte was the favorite among 38 individual horses in Pool 3 of Churchill Down’ Kentucky Derby Future Wager (KDFW) when betting closed last Sunday (Jan. 22). His odds were 7-1.

Forte being at such a low price in January had absolutely no appeal to me. I did make three bets in KDFW Pool 3.

I wrote last week that there were four horses listed at 40-1 on the KDFW morning line that I might put some money on – Banishing, Cyclone Mischief, Signator and Verifying. Since the “All Other 3-Year-Old Colts and Geldings” option was listed at 6-5 on the morning line, I did not plan to bet that.

I did indeed put some money on Banishing, who closed at 27-1. I did bet him even after he was scratched from a Fair Grounds allowance/optional claiming race last Saturday. He reportedly got cast in his stall and sustained some minor scrapes and cuts. As a result of that incident, Banishing is expected to miss about five days of training. This isn’t a good thing, but it’s nothing to cause me to drop him from my Kentucky Derby Top 10, or even to lower him from No. 4, which is where he was last week.

The TDN’s Thornton has Banishing on his Kentucky Derby Top 12. Arabian Knight is No. 1, followed in order by Forte, Cave Rock, Tapit Trice, Banishing, Faustin, Signator, Victory Formation, Hejazi, Instant Coffee, Jace’s Road and Determinedly.

Steve Haskin of Secretariat.com has Banishing ranked No. 7 for the Kentucky Derby. Those ranked higher, in order, are Forte, Cave Rock, Practical Move, Giant Mischief, Jace’s Road and Cyclone Mischief. Rounding out Haskin’s Top 10 are Signator, Instant Coffee and Arabian Knight.

Regarding Cyclone Mischief, Haskin wrote: “He looks to be one of the biggest overlays of the [Kentucky Derby] Future Wager.”

I didn’t hesitate to put some money on Cyclone Mischief in the KDFW. I didn’t hesitate to put some money on him, not at a juicy 44-1.

I didn’t see the need to bet Verifying at 34-1. Why? I already bet him at 74-1 in KDFW Pool 2.

I didn’t put any money on Signator in Pool 3 at 34-1. I wanted 40-1 or higher for him.

I did go ahead and make a large wager on “All Other 3-Year-Old Colts and Geldings” in Pool 3. Instead of being around the 6-5 morning-line price, this option was 5-2 until it dropped to 2-1 just before the betting deadline Sunday at 6 p.m. ET.

I felt 2-1 still was an extremely attractive price vis-a-vis the 6-5 morning line, especially considering that no 3-year-olds currently trained by Baffert were included among the 28 individual horses in Pool 3 due to the trainer being banned from the 2023 Kentucky Derby.

That means such Baffert-trained runners as Arabian Knight, Cave Rock, Arabian Lion, Hejazi, National Treasure, Newgate, Faustin, Reincarnate, Worcester, Havnameltdown and Harlocap are included in the “All Other 3-Year-Old Colts and Geldings” option in Pool 3.

My wager on “All Other 3-Year-Old Colts and Geldings” in Pool 3 follows sizable bets I previously made on this option at 4-5 in both Pool 1 and Pool 2.

In an important development this year involving Baffert, “new details have emerged about what has to happen for horses currently trained by him to be eligible to compete in this year’s Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs,” Daily Racing Form’s David Grening reported last Sunday (Jan. 22).

“As Baffert is still suspended by Churchill Downs through this year’s Derby on May 6, owners who have potential Derby horses with him must transfer them to other trainers by Feb. 28 in order to earn qualifying points in those points-scoring races designated by Churchill Downs on the Road to the Derby,” Grening wrote.

Two Baffert trainees, Taiba and Messier, did run in last year’s Kentucky Derby after being transferred to trainer Tim Yakteen. But those transfers occurred in April, not Feburary.

It’s going to be very interesting to see which Baffert-trained 3-year-olds go to another trainer and which of them do stay with the Hall of Famer prior to the Feb. 28 deadline.

Churchill Downs, which has offered pari-mutuel future wagering going back to 1999, expanded the number of betting options from 20 to 40 for the 2023 Run for the Roses.

Three more KDFW pools will be conducted this year: Feb. 10-12 (Pool 4), (Feb. 10-12) and Pool 5 (March 10-12).

Below are the final odds reported by Churchill Downs for Pool 3 of the 2023 KDFW:

2-1 All Other 3-Year-Old Colts and Geldings
    7-1 Forte
    15-1 Instant Coffee
    16-1 Loggins
    18-1 Extra Anejo
    23-1 Victory Formation
    27-1 Banishing
    27-1 Giant Mischief
    28-1 Blazing Sevens
    32-1 Corona Bolt
    32-1 Kingsbarns
    33-1 All 3-Year-Old Fillies
    34-1 Signator
    34-1 Verifying
    42-1 Dubyuhnell
    44-1 Cyclone Mischief
    45-1 Tapit Trice
    56-1 Curly Jack
    56-1 Shopper’s Revenge
    58-1 Disarm
    58-1 Practical Move
    58-1 Sun Thunder
    62-1 Tapit’s Conquest
    64-1 Wildatlanticstorm
    67-1 Echo Again
    69-1 Jace’s Road
    77-1 Hit Show
    78-1 Confidence Game
    82-1 Litigate
    85-1 Arctic Arrogance
    85-1 Gulfport
    91-1 Two Phil’s
    103-1 Gun Pilot
    103-1 Shesterkin
    105-1 Tapit Shoes
    121-1 Lugan Knight
    121-1 Rocket Can
    125-1 Angel of Empire
    145-1 Recruiter
    171-1 Prairie Hawk

    PEGASUS WORLD CUP SELECTIONS

The 2023 edition of the Grade I Pegasus World Cup highlights an excellent card this Saturday (Jan. 28) at Gulfstream Park. The $3 million invitational event will be contested at 1 1/8 miles on the main track.

I kept looking and looking and looking for a horse to try and beat 5-2 morning-line favorite Cyberknife. I’m really not wild about him at low odds from post 10. But try as I might, I could not come up with anyone else I like more.

I thought Cyberknife ran a terrific race in defeat when the runner-up in the Grade I BC Dirt Mile, which he lost by a head to a tough foe in Cody’s Wish on Nov. 5.

Thus, I am going with Cyberknife as my tepid top pick in this, his final start before beginning his new career as a sire.

Below are my selections for the Pegasus World Cup:

    1. Cyberknife
    2. Skippylongstocking
    3. Proxy
    4. Defunded

By the way, imagine just how exciting it would be if fabulous Flightline had been entered in the Pegasus instead of being retired to stud?

50 YEARS AGO: SECRETARIAT TRAINS IN FLORIDA

After having been elected 1972 Horse of the Year as a 2-year-old by Eclipse Award voters, Secretariat was training at Florida’s Hialeah Park early in 1973 in preparation for his legendary 3-year-old campaign.

According to William Nack who wrote the book “Secretariat: The Making of a Champion,” Secretariat posted four workouts in January, all at Hialeah:

    01/15/73 (3 furlongs in :37.00)
    01/20/73 (3 furlongs in :35.20)
    01/24/73 (4 furlongs in :47.60)
    01/30/73 (4 furlongs in :49.00)

Secretariat later would kick off his 1973 campaign by winning Aqueduct’s Grade III Bay Shore Stakes at seven furlongs by an emphatic 4 1/2 lengths while on his way to the first Triple Crown sweep since Citation had achieved the feat 25 years earlier.

    HOWIE TESHER DIES

The Thoroughbred racing community is mourning the death of highly successful and colorful trainer Howie Tesher, who died last Friday (Jan. 20) at the Majestic Memory Care Century in Hollywood, Fla., Daily Racing Form’s David Grening reported.

“Tesher, who suffered from dementia, died due to complications from pneumonia, according to his niece Jodie David,” Grening wrote.

Known for trying his best to keep his age unknown, Tesher would go so far as to smudge the date of birth on his licenses. He supposedly did that after a girlfriend once broke up with him after seeing his age on a passport.

Grening reported Tesher’s age as 90.

A Florida native, Tesher began his training career in that state at Tropical Park in 1961. His first win came in 1962 with Weeper’s Boy at Suffolk Downs in Massachusetts.

According to Equibase, Tesher won 1,302 races during a career that ended in 2014. He conditioned Grade I winners Andover Way, Bull Inthe Heather, Influent, Lieutenant’s Lark, Plankton, Sondrio, Weber City Miss and Wolfie’s Rascal.

“Tesher, who had a gregarious personality, trained for some high-profile owners, including George Steinbrenner [owner of the New York Yankees] and Telly Savalas (star of the popular TV show ‘Kojak’),” Grening wrote.

When I was a writer for the Daily Racing Form, I talked to Tesher a number of times. Whenever I did, it was a pleasure. He was always so quotable. That was no surprise in that he majored in journalism at the University of Florida, which gave him the background to know exactly what to say to a reporter.

I initially spoke with Tesher from time to time when I was writing columns for the DRF in the winter of 1980-81, first at Keystone (now Parx Racing) in Pennsylvania, then at Bowie in Maryland.

I later interviewed Tesher both before and after the Grade III Hawthorne Handicap at Hollywood Park in 1982 after I had been promoted by the DRF to be a reporter/columnist on the Southern California circuit.

Tesher won the Hawthorne on June 5 with Weber City Miss. Ridden by Sandy Hawley, Weber City Miss prevailed by two lengths as the 4-5 favorite.

Weber City Miss’ successful Hollywood Park invasion to take the Hawthorne came during what I will always remember as the year of Landaluce in Southern California.

Four weeks after the Hawthorne, Landaluce burst on the scene at Hollywood Park for trainer D. Wayne Lukas with a seven-length maiden win at six furlongs in a fast 1:08 1/5. One week later, the brilliant but ill-fated daughter of Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew ran six furlongs even faster to win the Grade II Hollywood Lassie Stakes by an amazing 21 lengths in 1:08 flat.

The same day that Weber City Miss won the Hawthorne in California, Conquistador Cielo splashed home to a 14-length victory in New York in the Grade I Belmont Stakes. Conquistador Cielo won the Belmont just five days after a 7 1/2-length win vs. his elders in the Grade I Met Mile for trainer Woody Stephens.

Weber City Miss won a much more important race than the Hawthorne later in 1982. She collaborated with Angel Cordero Jr. to register a 5 1/2-length victory in the Grade I Beldame Stakes at Belmont on Oct. 1.

    ECLIPSE AWARD PREDICTIONS

Last week for Xpressbet.com, I listed my 2022 Eclipse Award predictions. The 2022 winners will be announced during the Eclipse Awards dinner on Thursday (Jan. 26) at The Breakers in Palm Beach, Fla.

A two-hour telecast of the Eclipse Awards dinner on FanDuel TV and Racetrack Television Network (RTN) begins at 7:30 p.m. ET.

The first year that I made Eclipse Award predictions for Xpressbet.com was for the racing that was conducted in 2011. My Eclipse Award predictions from 2011 to present have been correct 91.2% of the time:

    2011: 15 correct, 2 wrong
    2012: 16 correct, 1 wrong
    2013: 16 correct, 1 wrong
    2014: 17 correct, 0 wrong
    2015: 14 correct, 3 wrong
    2016: 16 correct, 1 wrong
    2017: 16 correct, 1 wrong
    2018: 16 correct, 1 wrong
    2019: 15 correct, 2 wrong
    2020: 15 correct, 2 wrong
    2021: 16 correct, 1 wrong

    Total: 172 correct, 15 wrong

Remember, these are my predictions, not who I think should win or who I voted for.

I made a mistake when I listed these predictions last week. I had Cave Rock winning as 2-year-old male. Oops! To set the record straight, my actual prediction is Forte, who looks like a slam-dunk.

In terms of my 2022 predictions, I have the least confidence of being correct in the categories of male sprinter, female turf and trainer.

I’ve had more than two wrong only once going back to 2011. I don’t think it’s out of the question to have three or perhaps even more wrong this time. We shall see.

Race of the Week: Meet the Pegasus World Cup Contenders

      January 25, 2023 | By Jeremy Plonk

Let’s meet the contenders for Saturday’s Pegasus World Cup, which goes as Race 13 and anchors the Gulfstream Park card. The $3 million feature has a capacity field of 12 with a pair of also-eligibles.

1-Proxy: After knocking on the door in all 8 previous stakes races, finally broke through in the Grade 1 Clark Handicap at Churchill on Thanksgiving weekend. The well-bred son of Tapit and Grade 1 winner Panty Raid travels over Gulfstream Park’s main track for the first time and should save ground from the rail draw.

2-Simplification: Winner of Gulfstream’s Fountain of Youth last February, his sophomore campaign saw him finish third in the Florida Derby and fourth in the Kentucky Derby. All 3 of his career wins are at home at Gulfstream, where he’s not missed the top-3 in 7 attempts. Inside draw a boost to his versatile running style.

3-Ridin With Biden: Longshot has yet to race above the Grade 3 level, but won the Greenwood Cup at Parx among 3 wins in his last 4 starts. Regular rider Paco Lopez jumped saddles to ride Simplification, leaving the mount open to Emisael Jaramillo.

4-White Abarrio: The 2022 Florida Derby winner looks to become the first horse to win Gulfstream Park’s two signature dirt races. The $40,000 purchase has earned more than $1 million and has amassed a 4-for-4 local record. Only he and stablemate Skippylongstocking own Gulfstream wins at the PWC distance of 1-1/8 miles.

5-Defunded: One of the expected early pace players, California-based Defunded exits the top 2 performances of his career, winning the Grade 1 Awesome Again and Grade 3 Native Diver at Santa Anita and Del Mar. Son of Florida Derby winner Dialed In picks up top jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. for 2-time Pegasus World Cup-winning trainer Bob Baffert.

6-Art Collector: Projects as one of the fastest contenders in terms of early pace, he’s drawn just outside another primary speed player in Defunded. The 2-time Charles Town Classic winner has won 10 of 20 starts and a field-high $2.3 million. Jockey Luis Saez departs to ride Get Her Number, leaving the mount to Junior Alvarado.

7-Skippylongstocking: Winner of the local prep, the Grade 3 Harlan’s Holiday Stakes, he exits what was arguably the best race of his career. Only he and stablemate White Abarrio own Gulfstream wins at the PWC distance of 1-1/8 miles. Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. hops off to ride Defunded, while brother Jose Ortiz steps aboard last year’s Grade 3 West Virginia Derby winner.

8-Get Her Number: This will be the sprinter/miler’s first 1-1/8 miles dirt race since a fourth-place try in the April 2021 Grade 1 Arkansas Derby. Hard-luck runner-up in the Grade 1 Bing Crosby at Del Mar and Grade 1 Cigar Mile at Aqueduct during the 2022 season. Good traveler takes his game on the road. Luis Saez opts to ride here after piloting Art Collector in 7 of that veteran’s last 8 races.

9-Last Samurai: Historic pairing of world-renowned jockey Frankie Dettori and Hall of Fame legendary trainer D. Wayne Lukas. The 2022 Oaklawn Handicap winner over this 1-1/8 miles trip will be making his first foray to Gulfstream Park. A current 6-race losing streak includes battles with Proxy and Art Collector.

10-Cyberknife: The 5-2 morning line favorite comes out of a tough beat in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile when second by a head. That race has produced 3 of the last 4 Pegasus World Cup winners, including 2 straight. His pace-versatile style for champion trainer Brad Cox keeps him in contention in most any scenario, important for a horse drawn in a difficult, wide post position. Sire Gun Runner won this race with Florent Geroux aboard, and they’ll look for a follow-up in what will be Cyberknife’s final career race before retiring to stud.

11-Stilleto Boy: Third-place finisher in the 2022 Pegasus World Cup behind superstars Life Is Good and Knicks Go, we’ll see if last year’s 26-1 surprise exotics appearance can be repeated. The $1.1 million earner is by Preakness winner Shackleford. Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith won this race in 2017 aboard Arrogate.

12-O’Connor: Chilean 6-year-old will try to become the oldest Pegasus World Cup winner. Fourth as the favorite in the local prep, the Grade 3 Harlan’s Holiday, O’Connor must overcome a tough post draw in the 12-hole. Javier Castellano gets the call for trainer Saffie Joseph Jr., who also starts White Abarrio and Skippylongstocking.

      Picks:
      Defunded
      Cyberknife
      Proxy
      Art Collector

      $100 Betting Strategy:
      $50 Win: Defunded
$25 Exacta Box: Defunded and Cyberknife ($50)

Main ticket: (in order of preference): Real Fire; 2-Albayaader
          Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Real Fire and Albayaader just finished two-three in a similar maiden $50,000 claimer and meet again over six and one-half furlongs on grass in a race that should boil down to these two. ‘Cash is the quicker of the pair and may have an edge due to the lack of pace in the field, but the latter should appreciate today’s extra half furlong and could display improved tactical speed with the addition of blinkers. Both should be in included in rolling exotic play.

Main ticket: (in order of preference): Pride of the Nile; Faiza
          Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Pride of the Nile was nosed out by Faiza in the Starlet S.-G1 last month but there are reasons to believe she can turn the tables on the heavy favorite in this year’s renewal of the Las Virgenes S.-G3 over a mile on the main track. The daughter of Pioneerof the Nile overcame early trouble to loom a strong threat into the lane before proving extremely hard to down in an extra game performance that produced a career top speed figure. A series of sharp workouts since that race indicates she’s ready to produce another forward move and will receive a two pound break in the weights – for whatever that’s worth – from Faiza. The latter, undefeated in two starts, is the likely choice once again but was fully extended to edge our top pick at Los Alamitos and should get severely tested right back. She has to be included somewhere on your rolling exotic ticket, but ‘Nile clearly will be the better price of the two, so we’ll press with her on top.

Main ticket (in order of preference): 4-Eleuthera
          Backups/savers: 2-True Patriot

Forecast: Eleuthera stretches out again and should regain her winning form in this first level allowance optional claiming grass miler for state-bred fillies and mares. The daughter of Square Eddie was blocked and forced to steady repeatedly in a recent Hillside Turf sprint and actually did quite well to finish a close fourth, beaten just over a length, in her first outing since June. She projects to step forward considerably with that outing behind her, so we’ll give the Ben Cecil-trained filly top billing. True Patriot, a fast-finishing second in the same race Eleuthera exits, stretches out again and might be the most dangerous of the closers, though we have a sneaking suspicion that she is most effective as a late-running sprinter. Both should be included in rolling exotic play with the main push in the win pool and in the various rolling exotics going to Eleuthera.

          RACE 4: Post: 2:06 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 1-Cornelia Fort; 6-Sweet Hello
          Backups/Savers: none

Forecast: Here’s a below par field of state-bred 3-year-old maiden fillies competing for a claiming price of $50,000 that lacks an alternative to what surely will be the two main players on the tote, Cornelia Fort and Sweet Hello. ‘Fort, having run just once in straight maiden company over the all-weather surface up north, has more room to improve than ‘Hello, so we’ll put her on top. The daughter of Grazen is highly likely to produce a forward move and will be tough if she leaves cleanly from the rail. ‘Hello, runner-up in her last pair, has numbers that are slowly rising and projects to settle into a stalking position and then have every chance to seal the deal.

          RACE 5: Post: 2:35 PT Grade: X
Main ticket (in order of preference): 2-Lucky For You
          Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Lucky for You appeared a bit green in her debut in a similar grass sprint for older fillies and mares when racing behind runners along the rail to the head of the lane. She caught her best stride approaching the wire to miss by a neck before galloping out far in front in a very promising performance. The daughter of Uncle Mo won’t need to do anything more to handle this assignment at 6/5 on the morning line, so while there will be little value to be found in ther win pool we can use her with confidence as short-priced rolling exotic single.

          __________________________________________________ ____________________________
          __________________________________________________ ____________________________

          RACE 6: Post: 3:10 PT Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 3-Finneus 6-Street Boss
          Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Here’s a tough main track miler for entry-level allowance older horses that probably requires a bit of a spread in rolling exotic play. We’ll go two-deep and hope that’s enough. Finneus exits a much tougher race – the Cal Cup Sprint – and didn’t run badly when a non-threatening fifth at a six furlong distance that was simply too sharp form him. Today, the son of Stay Thirsty stretches out to a mile and may be capable of producing the last run if he’s not given too much to do in a race without a whole lot of early speed signed on. We’ll use him along with Street Ruckus, a fairly consistent veteran gelding who usually lands in the frame and can be counted on for another solid effort. He’ll likely be sent aggressively from the gate by speed rider Edwin Maldonado, and if he can get over from his outside draw and gain a soft stalking position the son of Street Boss should be a major factor every step of the way.

          __________________________________________________ ____________________________

          RACE 7: Post: 3:40 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 4-Moon Ice
          Backups/savers: 6-Spiritual Advisor

Forecast: Moon Ice is gradually improving with racing and with another forward move the John Sadler-trained colt should be set to earn his diploma in this state-bred maiden special weight grass sprint for sophomores. In a race without much early speed, the son of He Be Fire N Ice looks likely to grab control early and roll all the way to the wire. Spiritual Advisor, a willing third behind our top pick in a similar turf sprint earlier this month, gets an extra half furlong to work with today but maybe not get the kind of early fractions he’ll need to tag the leader. We’ll have a few tickets using him as a backup while reserving the main punch for Moon Ice.

          __________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ ____________________

          RACE 8: Post: 4:10 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): Hopper
          Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Hopper has trained like he’s fit and ready for his first outing since winning the Affirmed Stakes-G3 last June and from his advantageous rail post position the son of Declaration of War is likely to employ the same gate-to-wire tactics that produced his most recent victory. The Bob Baffert-trained colt will be ridden by noted speed pilot Edwin Maldonado, and based on speed figures the lightly raced four-year-old colt should be able to control the race gate-to-wire wire, especially in a field that on paper lacks late punch. At 5/2 on the morning line, he’s a win play and rolling exotic single.

          __________________________________________________ ____________________________
          __________________________________________________ ____________________________

          RACE 9: Post: 4:40 PT Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 4-Honey Jar; 6-Kitty Kitana
          Backups/savers: none

Forecast: On pure form, Kitty Kitana is strictly the one to beat in this first-level allowance field of fillies and mares over a mile on grass. However, the English-bred four-year-old shows just one win with seven seconds and thirds, so when push comes to shove close home we’re really not sure how much late punch you’re going to get from her. Honey Jar stretches out for the first time and seems certain to be the controlling speed. On pedigree, she should be able to get the mile, and with the break in the weights thanks to the presence of good bug boy Aguilar the Michael McCarthy-trained daughter of Kantharos offers a reasonable gamble at 6-1 on the morning line. Both should be included in rolling exotic play, with preference on top to Honey Jar.

Al Cimaglia: Woodbine Mohawk Park Jackpot Hi-5 Analysis

            January 28, 2023 | By Al Cimaglia
Tonight, in Race 12, Woodbine Mohawk Park will have a mandatory Jackpot Hi-5 payout. The carryover is set at $217,966.26 and the payout will be determined after a field of 12 pacers battle for a share of a $25,000 purse. The card kicks off with the 0.20 Pick 5 which has a $100,000 Guaranteed Pool.

The Jackpot Hi-5 is a 0.20 wager with a 15% takeout. The record for new money bet into the pool on a mandatory payout night is $2.8 million which came in May of 2019.

My Jackpot Hi-5 tickets are listed below. Comments and selections are based on a fast track.

            Race 12

2-Rockme Rollme (3-1)-In most of its recent races this Anthony Montini trainee has been dull but has been facing much tougher. Beat better than this here on 12-3 and should relish the company. Gets the benefit of a significant driver change as James MacDonald will between the pipes. Slow starts have hurt but should be closer to the leaders turning for the wire. My ticket will feature this veteran on top in a drop, and hopefully pop situation.

3-Flash Cube (5-1)-This 5-year-old set a lifetime mark here on 1-9 in the 2nd start for the Richard Moreau barn. Has also raced well in its 2 most recent outings. Needs an efficient trip and Filion can provide that type of journey. Shows the ability to pass horses down the lane, and will use this gutsy son of Sportswriter in the 2-3-4 spots on the Hi-5 ticket.

Al Cimaglia: Meadowlands Early Pick 4 Analysis

              January 28, 2023 | By Al Cimaglia
The Meadowlands has a competitive 14-race card scheduled. The 0.50 Early Pick 4 starts in Race 6. The sequence has a $50,000 guaranteed pool with a 15% takeout, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

              Race 6

1-Gottalovemyshadow (5-1)-Steps up after a sharp score from the 8-hole on 1-22. This is a veteran who has done good work at M1 over the years (47-9-8-5) and will look for another top effort.
7-Onecrookedleg (6-1)-Raced well in 2 straight and then took a double bump up and was stuck with post 10. Willing to toss that start, fits better here, and gets a new pilot in Andrew MacDonald.

              Race 7

1-Laurie Lee (9/2)-Recent form has been dull but drops again and should be in play with this post draw. Might be overlooked and could get a suck-round trip.
4-Addictivebehavior (7/2)-Even try in last to finish 3rd although beaten only a neck. Was off 3 weeks before the last race and could be tighter here. Could be bet down but difficult to leave off the ticket.
5-A Better Game (3-1)-The race could be chalky and this mare can be a player at this level. The 1/8 could offer a solid price and this mare won’t offer a big return but should be there at the wire with a nice trip.
8-Skateboard Chic (6-1)-This 11-year-old comes off a strong win and posted its 1st M1 win. Has only made 4 starts here and bumps up but will look for another big try at a square price.

              Race 8

3-Cooalncalculating N (12-1)-Comes off 2 even efforts after a sick scratch but did race better last week. This will be a test but does pick up AMac and will take a swing and look for a big try at a price.
5-Lightning Leia (6-1)-Takes a significant drop in class and lands in the same class as a gate to wire win at M1 on 12-8. Mark MacDonald gets the assignment so will look for an aggressive steer hopefully at a solid price.
6-Lady Rocknrolla A (3-1)-Also drops to the same level as a recent win. Has been in sharp form, winner in 5 of 6 starts, the last 3 at M1 and should be a player here but could be over bet.

              Race 9

2-Lenswoods Real Deal (9/2)-Comes off an even effort after shipping in from Freehold. Gingras grabs the lines tonight and should offer a fair price. Will likely be racing near the top of the stack and can use one move to roll by down the lane.
8-Safensound Hanover (3-1)-Got a perfect steer from AMac last week and closed quickly to pass a few down the lane. Will be bet but comes right back versus the same kind and the post should help the price.

              0.50 Early Pick 4

              1,7/1,4,5,8/2,5,6/2,8
              Total Bet=$24

                Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

                Fair Grounds - Race #6
#2 Frog Town Think he has a little bit of appeal on the hike for the new team, as he's fast enough to sit close early and this barn has been doing a lot of good work this season.
#6 Eyeing Clover He's the one to beat off the sharp Oaklawn debut that came back pretty fast, and he's probably the controlling pace in here. Might get a chance to see what he's made of today.
#3 Big Beemster He's another riser who fits well enough in here, but I worry that he's not going to get a great race shape for his style that tends to leave him more off the pace.
Race Summary Frog Town will need better here if he's going to handle the sharp maiden winner Eyeing Clover, but he's making his first start for a team that has been calling the right shots, and I think he can stay close enough to keep the likely chalk in his sights.
                Fair Grounds - Race #7
#8 Sacred Nation He'll have to fire off the bench today, but he ran pretty well when he got around two turns at Evangeline last summer, and I think he'll handle the turf fine.
#7 Slick and Fast He has already landed a couple underneath shares and handled a route trip, so the turf is really the big question on form for this guy today.
#9 Sonya Knows Better He'll need scratch help to get in today, but he'll add blinkers while racing away from Delta for the first time, and he might like the new scenery with a pedigree that offers hope for improvement on the lawn.
Race Summary Sacred Nation might be an okay price off the Evangeline form, but I like how he handled a two-turn trip from a tactical spot, and sire Star Guitar gets quality turfers.
                Fair Grounds - Race #8
#2 Mystic Storm Hawthorne graduate steps up to try winners for a team that can always have them ready to go, and I like that she should be able to find a pretty good trip spying the pace today. Capable mid-range price chance.
#1 Neutralize She had a go in stakes company here last month behind a filly with a high ceiling, and she might be able to find a cozy kind of trip while tucked on the inside.
#7 Bru Na Boinne She did what she was supposed to do at 3/2 last time out to land the maiden win, but I think she needs better than that while stepping up into a spot with a couple other decent alternatives. Obviously there's at least a little bit of talent here.
Race Summary Mystic Storm might get a bit overlooked in here with softer figures from Hawthorne, but I think she's in line for a great trip near the top and could be a mild upsetter in the finale. I'll take my chances with an aggressive single to close the day.

                  Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

                  Laurel Park - Race #2
#2 PRETTY GOOD YEAR (12-1) Slow start in race that got him eligible for this spot, capable on best.
#4 CARTE BLANCHE (9-5) Claimed by Maryland-based barn after he won fourth in row at Hawthorne.
#7 ALBERTANO (5-1) Rallied for two wins and two seconds in shorter routes in his last five starts.
Race Summary PRETTY GOOD YEAR, a well-beaten favorite in his last two starts, was re-claimed by trainer Kelly Rubley, perhaps targeting this race. PRETTY GOOD YEAR rallied into a slow pace to finish second in a $40,000 claiming race a year ago at Aqueduct when Rubley trained the 7-year-old gelding. Bet to win and place.
                  Laurel Park - Race #4
#1 LADNEEDSAHANDLER (5-1) Earned top speed fig in win at distance, can repeat in similar fashion.
#2 BIGMANCAN (9-2) Ultra-consistent sprint form, hit board in 21 of 33 starts in his career.
#3 IT’S SIZZLING TIME (3 Disappeared in comeback ‘starter’ on sloppy track, can’t be discounted.
Race Summary LADNEEDSAHANDLER carried his speed to a win and three seconds the last four times he broke cleanly. He can control the pace in here at his preferred distance and continue to pay dividends on a recent $10,000 claim. Bet to win and place.
                  Laurel Park - Race #5
#8 HAPPY CLOUDS (5-2) Midwest invader sat good trip, drew clear late, enters sharp claim barn.
#7 BOSSERATI (7-2) Has good first gear, gets class relief and second-time Lasix for Team Russell.
#1 BAYLIS STREET (6-1) Steady check-getter has speed and the rail and sheds 9 pounds.
Race Summary HAPPY CLOUDS saved ground while tracking the dueling leaders, came under a drive late on the turn, found a rail opening and pulled away late to win. She moves to an outside post but could sit a similar-type trip with second-time Lasix off the Farrior claim. Bet to win and place.

Keeneland Select Pick of the Day | January 28, 2023

                      Jan. 27, 2023

Race 10 at Oaklawn Park | Saturday January 28 | Post Time 5:57 PM Eastern
Southwest Stakes – Grade 3 | Purse $750,000 | One Mile and One Sixteenth | Three Year Olds
                      Pace Scenario Analysis:
Most races go through the favorite, or likely favorite, and this is no exception. Arabian Knight (6) opens as the prohibitive even money favorite on the strength of his seven length win in his November 7 debut at Keeneland. He led from the start and won easily with a 102 Equibase Speed Figure which is stakes quality, considering for example Forte earned the same 107 figure winning the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile that weekend and had run a few more times as compared to Arabian Knight. However, there is a valuable handicapping adage that we should not bet a low odds favorite doing something for the first time, and that is exactly what is happening in the Southwest, where Arabian Knight is trying two turns for the same time. Coupled with the fact he led from start to finish in his only race and is one of only two horses to have run once, and with the fact Corona Bolt (2) also led from start to finish in a sprint in his most recent race, there are considerable questions as to how fast and contested the early pace is going to be. Toss in recent wire-to-wire winner (around two turns) Jace’s Road (3) and possibly Frosted Departure (5), who stretches out from sprints and pressed the pace by a head in second through a 45.2 half-mile, nearly the same half-mile fraction Arabian Knight and Corona Bolt ran in their races, and it appears highly likely Arabian Knight is going to have his hands full and is a very poor bet at low odds to boot. With that in mind, I am taking a stand against Arabian Knight and if he beats me, he beats me.
                      Contenders:
Sun Thunder (1) is another recent maiden winner, but he has three things going for him which Arabian Knight does not. The first is ha’s run twice, finishing third in his seven furlong debut in late November before winning on New Years’ Eve. Second, his win came in a two-turn race and it came here at Oaklawn. Third, he rallied from eighth of 12 in that race, made a powerful move to go from fourth on the turn to be in front by four lengths, then coasted home. He came back to put in a strong half-mile workout (47.2) which was the best of 92 on the day, telling us he’s in fine physical condition. Taking back from the ground saving rail as up to four of the others all go for the lead or press the horses on the lead, Sun Thunder can get a dream trip and post the upset in this race with logical improvement off his last start.
Hit Show (8) is one of three in the race trained by Brad Cox, the other two being the speedy Corona Bolt (2) and possibly just as speedy Jace’s Road (3). Of the trio, Hit Show has by far the best chance to succeed in my opinion as he too won a mile race at Oaklawn last month. He is making the fourth start of his career, and has improved his Equibase Figures in each start, from 76 to 82 to 89. That last figure is a bit higher than the 76 figure Sun Thunder earned in his maiden win but maidens can markedly improve in their second starts, like Hit Shot did by six points in his second start. With the pattern suggesting further improvement, Hit Show has as good of a chance to win as Sun Thunder, with his outside post being the only minor issue. In his two-turn win last month, Hit Show rallied from fifth so he too should appreciate the hot and contested pace of this race, and he too put in a big workout (second best of 46) coming into the race.
Red Route One (7) rounds out the horses I’ll be looking at for win bets in this race. He started his career on grass last summer, in a two-turn race at Saratoga, finishing fifth, but won a two-turn race on grass at Kentucky Downs pretty impressively in career start number 2. Moved to dirt and right into top company, Red Route One rallied from 12th of 14 to finish third behind Forte in the Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland, at 60 to 1 odds. After a poor start on a sloppy track, he ran similarly okay when fourth in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes at the end of November. That has since turned out to be a KEY (productive) RACE, with winner Instant Coffee returning from a rest similar to the one Red Route One is coming back from and winning the Lecomte Stakes last weekend and with the seventh place finisher having come back to win as well. Most notably, Red Route One is a son of Gun Runner, whose first crop of three year olds last year was phenomenal, producing Cyberknife, Early Voting, Echo Zulu and Taiba. As such, Red Route One has a big shot in this race and moving forward on the Road to the Kentucky Derby.
Win bets: Among the three contenders: Sun Thunder (1), Red Route One (7) and Hit Show (8), all opening at 10/1 (because Arabian Knight opens at 1/1), I will be TWO of them at odds of 4 to 1 or more.
                      Exactas:
Box Sun Thunder (1), Red Route One (7) and Hit Show (8).
Optionally, you can play a small (perhaps $1 or $2) exacta using the horses with early speed who might hang on in second as well, such as:
Sun Thunder (1), Red Route One (7) and Hit Show (8) over Sun Thunder (1), Corona Bolt (2), Jace’s Road (3), Frosted Departure (5), Arabian Knight (6), Red Route One (7) and Hit Show (8).

1st race – (3) Watch It has been trying to get into a turf race. Gets the chance here and should shine. (4) She’s the One should be well-suited by the stretchout to a mile. (5) On Alert may be dangerous despite the lengthy layoff. (2) Breaker of Chains can be a threat in the final furlong if there’s no rust after a long layoff.
2nd race – (6) Foxburg is a firster from Mott who seems ready for a strong effort in his debut. (5) Summonyourcourage fizzled on Tapeta but should rebound here. (3) Kentucky Joker had a bumpy trip when third as a favorite and deserves a second chance here. (8) Bourbon Resolve was fourth in his debut and can move forward following a bullet work.
3rd race - (11) Onenightstandards gets back on turf and should be closing quickly in the final furlong. (7) Ready for the Lady was a Grade 3 stakes winner in his last turf race and is worth a close look. (8) Henley’s Joy returns to turf and could perk up. (10) Marwad should be a main contender in this spot.
4th race – (6) Keeper of Time won her last start on Tapeta and seems primed for a big effort after running in a graded stakes. [B](3) Caf

By Matt Shifman and Bob Ehalt

                          The $750,000 Southwest Stakes (G3), Oaklawn, Race 10, 5:57 p.m. ET

                          (2) Corona Bolt brings a perfect record to the Southwest for Brad Cox who has a barn full of serious Kentucky Derby contenders that have already won four of the official Derby points races. Corona Bolt is a son of Bolt d’Oro, the outstanding first crop sire of 2022. He broke his maiden at Churchill Downs in November and then took the Sugar Bowl at Fair Grounds by more than five lengths making a considerable jump in speed figures. He should handle the added distance as a son of Bolt d’Oro and a mare that also produced a stakes winner that raced long on the grass. At 6-1 in the morning line he comes with excellent value. (6) Arabian Knight is one of those budding Bob Baffert stars that was a speedy debut winner of his only start to date as the odds-on favorite. He sold for $2.5 million as a 2-year-old at Ocala in April. He is currently the favorite in the Kentucky Derby futures in Las Vegas and is listed as the 1-1 morning line favorite in the Southwest. (3) Jace’s Road fuck face has this one and is one of those Brad Cox runners with a Derby prep victory already in the Gunner Stakes at Fair Grounds in December with a front-end effort and that makes him 4-1. (8) Hit Show is yet another contender from the Cox barn and he is 10-1 in the morning line. Favored in all three of his starts he romped to a more than five-length victory in his debut at Keeneland, was fourth in a Churchill allowance and then returned to the winner’s circle in an Oaklawn allowance going a mile.

Betting strategy: 2 to win. Exacta box: 2-6. Trifecta box: 2-3-6-8.

1st race [Clm 16000 N2L, 6F] – (5) Register (A) was taken up badly and steadied at the start of his debut, faced heavy kickback, and rallied for second. (4) Big Elm will make his debut with an extensive work tab for Horacio DePaz from a dam that produced two winners from two to start including a third-place finisher in the Iroquois (G3). (2) Asmodeus will make his first start and is out of a dam that has produced only winners from five foals. (7) Treaty Obligation was purchased for $200,000 and is from an unraced mare who has no winners from five runners, so Chad Brown and Klaravich Stables must have thought this colt must had a striking appearance.
6th race [NY, OC 45K/N1X, 7F] – (6) My Sweet Wife has moved up the ladder from a N3L claimer win to a $32,000 tag and another first to a second at today’s level. (3) Dame Cinco won a starter allowance two races back and then was second by a nose in a first-level allowance. (4) Flashndynamite has 14 career wins and drops down to this spot by using the $45,000 claiming option and is projected to be on the lead. (5) Mashnee Girl has early speed and drops down from a pair of NY-bred stakes.
7th race [Toboggan (G3), 7F] – (3) Drafted won the Gravesend last time after a short layoff with a closing move. The David Duggan runner won the Toboggan last year and the Runhappy (G3) at Belmont Park in May and has run exclusively in stakes during that time. The 9-year-old has 10 career wins with two of them going seven furlongs. (6) Repo Rocks won his last two starts in stakes at Parx for trainer Jamie Ness. He was second in this race last year. (8) Little Vic was second behind Drafted in the Toboggan beaten by just a nose after winning a seven-furlong stake at Laurel. Blinkers go on for the first time. (7) Milton the Monster was claimed from a win for $62,500 by Tom Morley who brought him right back to win a rare N3X allowance race by more than two lengths. Both of those victories were at seven furlongs.
8th race [NY, Alw 72000 N1X, 6F] – (4) Royal Currency (C) was bet down from 9-1 to 4-1 in her first allowance appearance, which followed her maiden victory, and rallied to finish second with an improved speed figure. (6) Backed by Gold was claimed from a win in a N2L claimer for $14,000 and then moved to a NY-bred allowance where she had the lead and then got beat by a head after facing pace pressure the entire race. (3) Fancy Feline has been off since November after a series of starts at this level for the Bond barn. (7) Bankers Daughter has been racing against open company in her last three starts and was competitive.
