1^st race [Md Sp Wt, 1 mi] – (5) Balpool (B) raced greenly in her debut for Rob Atras and finished fourth after a slow start. (2) Gifted made a vast improvement in her second start at Aqueduct when Bill Mott moved her to the dirt after she made a poor showing in her first race on the grass at Saratoga. (4) River Oaks was third in her first start back in October and now returns with blinkers on and Lasix for the first time for Mott. (1) Alice Kramden also comes back following a debut at Saratoga where she showed some speed early.
3^rd race [Ruthless, 7F] – (4) Girl Trouble is in the best form of her career with three victories in a row at Parx. Girl Trouble won an allowance and two stakes races by a combined margin of almost 20 lengths taking control of those races shortly after the start. (3) Malibu Moonshine used a late running style to win all three of her starts for Charlie Baker. Malibu Moonshine won a pair of seven-furlong stakes at Laurel with the first against state-breds. (5) Royal Poppy needed five tries to break her maiden which she did with a front-end effort by six lengths after Ray Handal put the blinkers on. (2) Interpolate broke her maiden in her second start for Chad Brown and then ran fourth behind Girl Trouble in the Parx Futurity after a rough start kept her from getting into a pace-pressing position.
6^th race [Clm 25000 N2L, 6F] – (2) Outasite (B) had a disaster filled race when he broke through the gate and then had to race six-wide on a sloppy track. (5) Per Diem will drop into a N2L claimer for the first time for trainer Lynn Cash who races his horses all over the Mid-Atlantic region and that makes it hard to evaluate their form, but he wins at Aqueduct also. (6) Braciole had two seconds following a layoff and now has four place finishes. (3) [B][U]John’s Prot

3rd race – (6) Tepper had some trouble last time when ninth. Takes a big class drop and should fire today. (3) The Sleepychipmunk has some late kick and could be a threat here. (2) Tactical Force switches to turf and is worth a look. (1) Media Sensational should be a factor from the rail. Betting strategy: 6 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-3-6.
5th race – (3) Moped Dennis drops in class and looks best in this spot. (7) Gone Nuts takes a big class drop and could be a factor on his best try. (6) Our Noble Ortega fits in with this group. (1) Action Dream will benefit from a ground-saving trip. Betting strategy: 3 to win, place. Exacta box: 3-7. Exactas: 3-7 over 1-6 and 1-6 over 3-7. Doubles: 1-3-6-7 with 2-4-5-7.
6th race – (7) Elysian Field had a rough trip in her return from a layoff and can make amends in this spot. (4) Lady Beth is a firster from Chad Brown who merits respect. (2) Le Beau makes her debut for Clement and might have some talent. (5) Alhaan debuts for Pletcher and is worth a look. Betting strategy: 7 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-4-5-7.
8th race – (6) Charge It was one of the better 3-year-olds last year and seems poised for a solid return to the races. (7) Vittorio has been absent since April but is training nicely for his comeback. (4) Tartufo might prefer the two-turn distance here. (2) Carmichael could contend here off the Romans claim. Betting strategy: 6 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-4-6-7. Doubles: 2-4-6-7 with 1-2-4-5.
9th race – (4) Solicitation was fourth in her debut after she was bumped. Can handle these with a smooth trip. (5) Nonna’s Tiramisu is firster who can make her presence felt here. (2) Soviet Excess should welcome the stretchout to a mile. (1) La Goulu had a useful debut and can improve off that effort here. Betting strategy: 4 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-4-5.

Forecast: Conquistar has done some good work in the a.m. for trainer Bob Baffert (27% with debut runners) and at 6/5 on the morning line and likely to go lower she will be a short-priced rolling exotic single on many tickets. The daughter of Quality Road lands the cozy outside draw in this six furlong maiden sprint for sophomore fillies, providing her the option of popping and going or stalking and pouncing. But this is not a one filly race. Fellow first timer Clearly Unhinged has displayed plenty of talent in her own right, and if she breaks cleanly from the rail she is likely to provide serious competition for the Baffert filly. The Michael McCarthy-trained daughter of Into Mischief is a “must use” in rolling exotic play.

Forecast: Tom and Jazzy was visually quite pleasing in victory over this course and distance when breaking his maiden vs. state-bred foes during the fall meeting. Based on his three other starts (all poor performances on dirt), the son of the good grass runner Tom and Jazzy should stick to turf for the remainder of his career, and today’s return to the sod should allow him to regain his best form. With the addition of Lasix and the switch to Frankie, the George Papaprodromou-trained gelding looks very much like the one to beat. Thirsty Pappy also sports a prior win over the Santa Anita grass course and earned a competitive speed figure in doing so. He, too, looks considerably more effective on grass than dirt and is the one our top pick has to fear most.

Forecast: Lookin for Revenge has finished first or second in 11 of 23 career starts, so while he competes in the lower claiming ranks the Steve Knapp-trained gelding can be counted on for an honest effort when conditions suit. In a race that lacks speed, the son of I Want Revenge may be capable of inheriting the role as the controlling speed, especially if his connections commit to that strategy. With aggressive speed jockey Edwin Maldonado aboard, we’re expecting a gate-to-wire performance in a race in which the closers don’t really offer much of a late punch. At 5/2 on the morning line, he’s a win play and rolling exotic single.

Forecast: This state-bred turf sprint for sophomore fillies came up unusually weak. Timely Luck was just three lengths off a pretty quick opening quarter and half in her debut before faltering but we suspect that with the switch in surface in this much easier affair the daughter of Prospect Park will carry her speed a whole lot farther. The barn has good stats with the second time starter angle, so from a cozy outside post the Sean McCarthy-trained filly offers a reasonable gamble in the win pool and in the various rolling exotics. Palascinta has trained okay for her debut and is bred for grass, so let’s consider her a major player as well. She certainly doesn’t have to be any kind of world beater to be a fit with this bunch. Loyal to a Fault has numbers that fit but we hardly think she offers any real value at or near her morning line of 6/5. You can throw her in for protection, but if she beats you at a short price, who cares?

Forecast: This straight $40,000 claiming sprint for fillies and mares appears to have two main contenders, and both should be included in rolling exotic play. Miss Fia has never finished off the board in eight career starts over the Santa Anita main track, most recently when a solid runner-up in a $32,000 seller. She removes blinkers (like that angle) and has a good pace stalking style that should work very well at this extended seven furlong trip. The veteran daughter of Maclean’s Music can offer some value at or near her morning line of 4-1. Violent Runner was overmatched in the La Flores Stakes-G3 in late December but certainly isn’t today while dropping into a seller for the first time. A two-time winner over the local main track, the lightly raced daughter of Violence can return to good form effort and is strictly the one to beat.

Forecast: This year’s renewal of the San Marcos Stakes-G3 truly is a grass grab bag, which is to say that anybody can win. The Grey Wizard got a confidence boosting victory when facing first level allowance foes over this course and distance last month, accelerating with purpose when set down for the drive to draw clear with an impressive display of late speed. Two runs back, the son of Caravaggio finished an excellent second in the Hollywood Turf Cup-G2, so with a repeat of either one of his last two outings the Graham Motion-trained gelding should be right in the thick of things. With Johnny V. staying aboard and at 5-1 on the morning line, he’s worth a play. Avenue is a big price (12-1) on the morning line so despite his disadvantageous extreme outside post the staying son of Quality Road is well worth using on your ticket. Dicey Mo Chara just won the San Gabriel Stakes-G2 over nine furlongs on the local lawn, and today’s extra distance shouldn’t hurt at all. It’ll be hard to replicate the perfect ground-saving trip he enjoyed in that victory, but we’ll toss him in, nonetheless. These are the three we’ll be using on our main ticket while front running Masteroffoxhounds and deep closing Prince Abama are relegated to backups.

RACE 7: Post: 3:38 PT Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): Straight No Chaser; 3-Howbeit
Backups/savers: 5-Radical Right

Forecast: Straight No Chaser may have found seven furlongs out his range, and early pressure served up by Taiba and Forbidden Kingdom didn’t help either in the Malibu Stakes-G1 in late December but at this shortened trip when facing easier foes in today’s Palos Verdes Stakes-G3 the son of Speightster may be able to bounce back with a winning effort. He’s the quickest in the field, so the rail post (assuming he breaks cleanly) shouldn’t be an issue. Howbeit projects to enjoy a coveted second flight, stalking trip and then have his chance when the pressure is turned on at the head of the lane. First or second in three of four starts over the Santa Anita main track, the Mark Glatt-trained son of Secret Circle is a strong contender as the 2-1 morning line favorite. Maryland invader Radical Right is a tad light in the speed figure department but represents the most dangerous of the late runners. If there’s a pace meltdown, he’s the one likely to benefit the most.

RACE 8: Post: 4:10 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 4-Virat; 3-Augusta Melody
Backups/savers: 11-Gregory’s Pride

Forecast: We’ll go three-deep in this downhill turf dash for first level allowance horses but not with a great deal of confidence. It’s a messy affair in which nothing would surprise, so feel free to spread deeper if you feel the need. Lightly raced Virat (first or second in four of six career starts) may have more room for improvement than any of the others so we’ll put him tentatively on top. The Peter Miller-trained gelding has run well over the Santa Anita flat course, and if he can do the same down the hill he’ll be in the thick of it. Augusta Melody may be the quickest in the field and will appreciate the return to grass. He’s always preferred to run second or third rather than win but on his best day he’s right there with these. Gregory’s Pride is another that has thrived on secondary awards – he has one career win and nine placings from 13 starts – but is a threat from off the pace and with good racing luck should be heard from in the closing stages.

RACE 9: Post: 4:30 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 2-Flashiest; 3-Exaulted
Backups/savers: 1-Lincoln Hawk

Forecast: Flashiest was winless in eight starts last year but showed a return to form when rallying strongly into the teeth of modest fractions to finish an excellent second at 21-1 in the San Gabriel Stakes-G2 in late December. He shortens up a furlong to flat mile today – he’s three for five in his career at this trip – so with a repeat of his last race the Leonard Powell-trained gelding may be able to find his way to the winner’s circle. The switch to Frankie certainly won’t hurt. Exaulted looked sharp beating a lesser field last month with a strong speed figure, and if he can turn in two alike he can be tough right back. The son of Twirling Candy has good tactical speed and can be effective no matter what the race flow turns out to be. Lincoln Hawk, a two-time winner over the local lawn, was victimized by a lack of pace when unplaced at 6/5 in a similar nine furlong affair last time out. He should get quicker early fractions to work with at this distance so we’re willing to give him another look.

Tonight, Northfield Park has a 15-race program that includes an Open Handicap Trot plus an Open Pace. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 11. The sequence has a $10,000 guaranteed pool, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 11

2-Grantmeawish (2-1)-This 8-year-old makes a rare Nfld start and is a perfect 2-2 here. Has faded down the lane in the last 2 races at MVR but could get the point and not look back. Should fit well, and shows good speed on the smaller oval. Beat cheaper here on 9-18 by >7 lengths and is Wrenn's choice over #3.
3-Record Machine (9-1)-Steps up after finishing 2nd and couldn't get the lead racing 1st over. Should be in line for a more efficient trip this time. Will offer a price and with this post draw could win with a pocket ride.
6-Almanac (9/2)-Came 2nd to Southwind Amazon last time and was compromised after landing 4th off the gate. Merriman should have the pedal down this time. Last week, it looked like he had a lot left at the 3/4 pole and could not get out. Needs a trip, but best to beware.

Race 12

5-Music Is Art (4-1)-Using the 2 droppers who couldn't stack up to Southwind Amazon last time. This 13-year-old is a player with this post draw if dialed on high. Could get a good seat off the gate and land behind the one below.
8-Odds On Osiris (2-1)-Tried from the 9-hole but could not catch a well rated, well-meant winner in last. Could be the one to beat, has the back class and speed to win from the 8-hole but recent form has been dull. That said, still should be a major threat as long as Wrenn provides a smooth trip.

Race 13

3-Makin Some Noise (2-1)-Will use despite breaking stride at times, and the short price. MVR shipper has done well here
(9-6-1-0). Comes back in sequence and has the gate speed to make every call a winning one.
5-Zanetti (5-1)-Needs to race near the top of the stack to be most effective. Merriman should work that plan and could land in the 2-hole behind the one above.
9-Bettor Than Spring (5/2)-Has taken pictures at this class and drawing into the 2nd tier may help the price. Davis Jr could land in a good seat as there is gate speed on the rail. This was his choice over #1.

Race 14

4-Fly Charlie Fly (5-1)-Sugg takes the lines on this 5-year-old who had a pair of even efforts against straight Open company. Drops to a more comfortable level and should be in striking range turning for the wire. Charley has hit the board in over half of his Nfld starts (54-11-11-6) and could be sitting on a big try.
6-Elliot Moose (7-1)-Looking for a price shot and will use this Rhoades entry who comes off a gate to wire score versus cheaper. This is a bigger test but Merriman has some gate speed to use and we may not have seen the best from this 5-year-old.

Fair Grounds - Race #6

#8 Hey Jackson	Swing of the day comes here with this guy who will be making his third career start, and I don't feel like his running line on paper really captures the middle move he made into a solid pace last out. He's running into all the big names in here, so I expect the price to be huge to take a shot.
#5 Charging	Check him out on the track and tote, as he's one of two going first out from the Cox barn, and the team's go-to rider lands here. Wouldn't be surprised to see him run a big one.
#3 Bo Cruz	He has the feel of a live firster from the Stall barn, and he has pretty consistently been among the quicker workers in the mornings here. Let's see how that translates in the afternoon.
Race Summary	Hey Jackson should offer a big number on the board with a couple of flat running lines to his credit, and he's going to need something a whole lot better if he's going to compete with debuters from Cox, Stall, Asmussen and Casse in here among others. That said, I liked his last race a bit more on video than I do on paper, and I wonder if he still has some room to improve.

Fair Grounds - Race #7

#8 Desert Tempest	She'll get Lasix while getting back on the grass today, and she should be in line for a really good trip while racing right up near the splits. First jump gets her home?
#6 Watch This Munny	Tactical type loses Geroux today, but he ran pretty well at Kentucky Downs in his only lifetime turf start, and I'm not sure this is the deepest special weight spot we're going to see this year.
#3 Mo Shiro	Wouldn't be surprised to see her run well in this one, as she chased a couple fillies who went on to the 3-year-old stakes series in her last two starts. Bounce back potential.
Race Summary	Desert Tempest went evenly on the turf in her debut try, and I think she has some room to thrive around two turns on the grass here.

Fair Grounds - Race #8

#7 Mr. Cromwell	He goes for twice the price here for the new barn in this second career start, and he showed a little bit of finishing ability in the debut run. Think he can handle these with any mild step forward.
#8 Computerized	He passed all of them but the runaway winner in that debut run, and perhaps he can be a bit more tactical this time around. Wouldn't surprise to see him take a nice move in the right direction today.
#3 Chippee	He was a no-show for the new barn last time out, and perhaps that's his new baseline, but I would be willing to give him another chance here in the second start for the team. Bounces back at a better price?
Race Summary	Mr. Cromwell might go favored in here off the solid debut run, and I think both he and Computerized both have a lot of upside off useful debut runs.

Should perform well. Just check out his last speed rating, 75. That one looks good in this group.

ROCK CHALK - Gelding won shipping here on Jan 27th and looks good right back. I like that last outing on Jan 27th at Tampa Bay Downs where he ran first. Diaz is back for another race today after sitting atop this horse for the 1st attempt on Jan 27th and ought to know the ropes to this one a little better. Ranks at the top in earnings per start. A dominant outing in this event can augment the lifetime earnings. SUMMER ALL YEAR - This is a classic 'Lone Front-runner' scenario. If Quinonez gets him out of the gate cleanly it'll likely be smooth sailing. Searching through the data for this race, I noted right away this horse's last effort was more than meets the eye. Showed good zip, fell back, and then ran evenly. OKLETSGO - After the event aboard this animal on January 20th, the jockey is going to be acquainted with the colt much better. This thoroughbred has recorded the best recent turf Equibase speed fig at the distance-surface. Sacco brings him right back. I suggest you stay with this strong colt. Based on his last TrackMaster turf fig alone, I'm going to play this horse. COX CANYON - This beautiful animal is racing on the turf for the first time. He should be tough, coming off a first place finish in his race on December 23rd on a sluggish track.
