Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

Yonkers Raceway begins the week with an 11-race card. The feature goes in Race 8, an Open Handicap Pace with a $36,000 purse. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 also starts in Race 8, and the sequence will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 8

3-Semi Tough (3-1)-Did all the heavy lifting, then got caught at the wire and finished a tight 3rd losing by a neck. My play will be based on beating the program chalk #7 Nandolo N (2-1). Gingras and the connections get a post edge and possibly some redemption.
4-Oakwoodnitownit IR (5-1)-Stayed inside, enjoyed a nice trip and finished 2nd in the same race as the one above. That was the first start since 12-5. My take is the same trip could happen here, getting a pocket ride behind #3 and then look to cross the wire on top.

Race 9

3-Feelin Western (3-1)-Drops from facing Open Handicap company to the level of its last picture on 1-23. Looks like a main player versus this kind and knows how to win. Posted 10 wins in 34 starts last year and has snagged 9 wins in 33 races at Yonkers.
4-Blank Stare (9/2)-Does better racing closer to the lead and with this post draw Holland can work a smooth trip. Should be in contention around the last turn and did pace the back half in .55 last week.
5-Genius Man (6-1)-Drops to a better level and might be driven more aggressively. There is speed inside but could be put in play early, land in the pocket and trip out at a square price.

Race 10

3-I Draintheswamp A (5/2)-This Aussie bred is interesting and hopefully won't be over bet. Shows good speed at the Big M with a 3rd place finish in 149.3. Now the Erv Miller pupil tries the half-mile oval and appears to be getting acclimated. This will be the 6th U.S. start since coming back and last raced at home in June of 2022. This is also the 5th try on Lasix and so far hasn't connected for a win.
7-Western Joe (5-1)-Drops after finishing 7th in a needed race. Has been on the bench since 10-21 and if tight enough should like the company. Joe B could have the pedal down and has the gate speed to land a close up seat. Has a 151.4 mark here in 2021 and should be a fair price.

Race 11

3-Velocity Komodo (6-1)-Willing to toss last from the 7-hole in the first appearance since 12-19. There aren't any standouts in this group and could be in play turning for home. The Stratton barn has been posting 24% winners and Jordan should provide an efficient trip.
4-Benhope Rulz N (2-1)-Steps up after a well rated win as Gingras got on the engine and didn't look back. Could repeat and did beat this kind back in October. Will respect chances but this won't be as easy. Using, but will hope for the others who offer more value.
5-Tiger Baron (9/2)-This 8-year-old has a pair of 2nd place finishes to show for his efforts after coming off the bench on 1-17. Moved up a position versus this kind in last due to a placing and drew the rail in both races. Joe B could leave and land in the pocket behind the program chalk #4 and snag a trip-out picture.

Picks Notes
#3 Fancy Empress She has been finishing well since showing up with the locals, and she just caught an easy winner in that last one. Think her local baseline makes her tough today.
#7 Especially You Forward player gets some class relief for this one after a flat effort at Churchill in November, and she won her only local start here last year. One of the top pair should land this.
#1/1A Zircher entry Both halves of this team seem capable enough in here, and they have both proven capable of landing shares with similar in recent starts.
Race Summary Fancy Empress and Especially You look tough to get past, but we might get a slightly better price on 'Empress while she faces the dropping Churchill shipper.

Mahoning Valley - Race #6
Picks Notes
#3 Luna Mia She showed a little chasing pace in a short field before stopping in that debut run, and she shows up for a tag in her local debut, which might be a decent enough move from that Mountaineer special weight. Interesting with a move forward.
#6 Time For Cupid Her form is all over the place, but she has never been in this easy or faced the local crew. She has given away ground late in almost every race on her page, so I'm a bit iffy here even on the drop.
#7 Iron Wilma She's a pretty reliable spying player who figures in the mix again late here, but she has already had 20 chances, so she's not brimming with excuses here.
Race Summary Luna Mia has some room to improve in this second career start, and she might be quick enough to be in the frame heading into the turn. Mid-range price chance.

Mahoning Valley - Race #8

#2 I Got Hope She was a nice winner in her only start at this trip when facing cheaper, and she might be able to bounce back here while attending to a more modest route tempo.
#1 Sushi Q Something like her last would keep her in the frame here, but I don't know what to make of her wildly inconsistent form, and I'm not sure I want her as the potential favorite to find out if she can hold form.
#5 Queen High She'll need to bring something better than those last two, but she isn't too far removed from some tries that would keep her in the picture in here.
Race Summary I Got Hope has some appeal in this spot while getting back around two turns with the three-back win rider up, and she might find a really cozy spot while spying the speed.

Race Summary GUARDSMAN PASS is the only entrant to show a runner-up finish from 22 combined starts on turf. He rallied inside on the final turn to finish a clear second to the 1-to-9 favorite in a one-mile dirt race. He ran evenly two back on the lawn and the winner, Our Valley, came back to set a clear pace and finish third for a $15,000 tag. Bet to win and place.

Turf Paradise - Race #5

#1 YELLEN (7-2) Worked fast, chased faster rival, gets Lopez for second start locally.
#3 BIG AL’S PRINCESS (5- Ran away from the next two favorites with ‘complete authority.’

Race Summary YELLEN chased the fleet-footed, 2-to-5 favorite before fading in the final furlong of a well-bet try after five months away. She will have to carry her speed farther with a new pilot from the rail. Bet to win and place.

CREME DE MAIS - A win pct like 33 is tremendous for any rider/trainer tandem. I like that this first-timer has been working over the Mahoning Valley Race Course oval and makes her debut here today. Ibarra is giving this one Lasix for the 1st time. Nice move. BROKEN JEWEL - Aviles is right back for another race today after riding on board this equine for the first time on January 10th and ought to know the ropes to this one a little better. Dropping in class figure points from her January 10th race at Mahoning Valley Race Cour. Based on that data, I will give this animal the advantage. This filly should improve after adding Lasix in the last race and getting it again today.
