Monday Myths: Is Golden Gate's Synthetic Tougher to Handicap?

    February 6, 2023 | By Jeremy Plonk

Welcome to a continuing handicapping series for our Monday blog space, “Monday Myths.” Each week I’ll use the power of the Betmix database to take common handicapping assumptions and either support or dispel them with data. Betmix data powers the 1/ST BET app and its features like Angler and Birddog give data-minded horseplayers a treasure trove of information in which to query your own curiosities.

    Assumption:

As with typical synthetic surfaces, Golden Gate Fields’ results are more unpredictable than other venues racing on dirt.

    Background:

It’s El Camino Real Derby Day on Saturday at Northern California’s Golden Gate Fields, drawing many horseplayers to GGF that don’t routinely play the track and its Tapeta surface. Since their proliferation nearly 20 years ago, synthetic surfaces continue to be a lightning rod for handicappers who either embrace or repulse the challenge. Is Golden Gate’s racing less predictable than traditional dirt tracks?

    Data Points:

I fired up the Betmix database to look at racing at Golden Gate on the Tapeta and compared to all other tracks in the timeframe since the start of 2020. Given an average field size at Golden Gate smaller than the national average, I looked only at 6 and 7-horse fields to make a more direct comparison.

    //

In fields of 6 and 7 horses, favorites win 36.7% at Golden Gate Fields on the main track.

In fields of 6 and 7 horses, favorites win 39.5% at other venues on the main track.

    //

In fields of 6 and 7 horses, the average win odds at Golden Gate Fields is 4.2-to-1 on the main track.

In fields of 6 and 7 horses, the average win odds at other venues is 4.1-to-1 on the main track.

    //

In fields of 6 and 7 horses, horses 8-1 or higher win 4.6% at Golden Gate Fields on the main track.

In fields of 6 and 7 horses, horses 8-1 or higher win 4.4% at other venues on the main track.

    Bottom line:

In all 3 areas compared, the idea that finding a winner at Golden Gate Fields is more difficult than other places is true to some extent. Most significantly is that 2.8% lower strike rate for GGF favorites. The average win odds and propensity for longshot winners are only very slightly in favor of the argument that GGF’s Tapeta makes for a more difficult challenge.

What may make it feel like such a tougher handicapping challenge is the direct comparison with main track races at GGF sister track Santa Anita. There, it’s 42% winning favorites, an average win odds of 3.7-to-1 and just a 3.5% win rate for horses 8-1 or more when comparing over similar 6 and 7-horse field sizes.

    Additional details:
You can go into Betmix and run your own queries for a deeper dive into this theory and any that you can create. For instance, run the percentages for other synthetic tracks like Woodbine and Turfway Park.

              Tuesday’s Kembla Grange racing tips & quaddie | 7/2/2023
              February 6, 2023 8:25 am.
              Ciaran Jackman

              What Kembla Grange Races
Where Kembla Grange Racecourse – Princes Highway, Kembla Grange NSW 2526
              When Tuesday, February 7, 2023
              First Race 1:15pm AEDT

              Visit Ladbrokes

The Illawarra Turf Club will host a very competitive seven-race card at Kembla Grange Racecourse this Tuesday. The track is currently rated a Good 4, but with rain forecast throughout the day on Tuesday, we could see the track deteriorate into the Soft range by the end of the day. The rail will be in the +8m position from the 1100m mark to the winning post and in the +6m position for the remainder of the circuit.

The first race at Kembla Grange will jump at 1:15pm AEDT.
Best Bet at Kembla Grange: Dancing Alone

The second race of the day will feature three last start winners, with two of them winning their debut in fine style. One of those debutant winners was Dancing Alone from the Bryce Heys yard, who was heavily backed into an odds-on quote and duly saluted for the punters, running away with an easy 1.2 length victory. This daughter of I Am Invincible was a very expensive purchase at the Inglis Sales, as she was sold for $1.4 million back in 2021, so the expectations will be high during the early stages of her career. However, all she can do is win, and that is exactly what she did at Canberra over 1000m on January 20. Alysha Collett rode this filly on debut and she will stick with her on Tuesday to continue her affiliation with what looks to be a very smart three-year-old. This filly looks to have a lot of ability and now that she has put her maiden behind her, we expect her to go on with it and record back-to-back wins second-up on Tuesday.
              Best Bet

              Race 2 – Silks#5 Dancing Alone (1)

              3yo Filly | T: Bryce Heys | J: Alysha Collett (55kg)

              $2.90 with Bet365
Next Best at Kembla Grange: Grand Crusader

In the very next race we will be siding with the Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes-trained Grand Crusader, who will be returning from a four-month spell with the benefit of a nice trial win at Rosehill over 900m on January 27. This four-year-old gelding has only had the two race starts for his career, recording a third and a fourth at those two starts, with both of those races turning out to be very good form races. This son of Counterattack looks to have returned a better horse after his first preparation, with his trial showing that he can jump and lead, which should be exactly what we see on Tuesday when he jumps from barrier one. Brenton Avdulla trialled this gelding and he has chosen to stick with him first-up which fills us with confidence and indicates that he will be there to win. With only two other speed influences, which are drawn outside of him, we should see Avdulla push for the lead and hold the fence. If he gets control of the race, he should go very close to breaking his maiden.
              Next Best

              Race 3 – #1 Grand Crusader (1)

              4yo Gelding | T: Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes | J: Brenton Avdulla (58kg)

              $3.60 with Neds
Best Value at Kembla Grange: Martini Crusader

The penultimate race will feature our value play of the day, with the Stephen O’Halloran-trained Martini Crusader hitting this race at Kembla Grange second-up after running second first-up at Gosford on January 25. This son of Pride Of Dubai recorded his only race win when second-up and at 1400m, so Tuesday’s race looks to be ideal for him to break his run of outs and record a second victory of his career. Even if the rain does come and the track starts to soften by the end of the day, it shouldn’t hamper this geldings chances as he has only missed the placings once from six starts on a Soft track. Rachel King will stick after riding this guy first-up and if she can have him settle one off the rail and just worse than midfield, he will be rattling down the outside to stake his claim in the concluding stages.
              Best Value

              Race 6 – #7 Martini Crusader (8)

Tuesday’s Horse Racing Tips: Taunton, February 7th
                Stephen Harris Horse Racing Expert

                Today’s Horse Racing Tips – February 7th

There are 3 meetings in Britain on Tuesday, with low grade NH cards at Market Rasen and Taunton likely to attract the bulk of the betting action. Rapidly drying ground is likely at both tracks, with a mild and bright weather forecast for the next week across the country. All-weather fans have the evening fixture at Wolverhampton to study, with the floodlights coming on at 5.30pm.

                Today’s Daily Nap

                Holetown Hero

                Taunton 2:00 (UK time)

Paul Nicholls unexposed novice got off the mark over hurdles over two miles here in December, relishing the good ground for the first time and cruising clear hard held under a typically confident ride from Harry Cobden. The penalty now makes life harder, but the step up to 2m3f will suit and he remains with plenty of scope to improve after just 3 runs over hurdles.

                Odds: NA
                Today’s Value Angle

                Half Dozen

                Taunton 2:30 (UK time)

Paul Nicholls has a terrific record at his local tracks, and this progressive 6-y-o proved a completely different proposition pitched into handicap company at Hereford last week (barely off the bridle to win a true run race on the soft ground). This sharper course is more about speed on decent ground (under the penalty for that rout), but he is a very strong traveller and should have little difficulty following up if the quick turnaround is not a negative.

                Odds: NA

Odds are best odds available as at 2am February 7th 2023. Odds may now differ.

Racing Tips: Andrew Mount’s Tuesday Picks – February 7th

LE CAMELEON (system – seasonal preference)

LE CAMELEON surprised me by making a winning reappearance at Warwick in early October as the Jane Williams yard was badly out of form at the time. He was only seventh at Chepstow’s Welsh National meeting in late December but might have needed a confidence booster on the back of a Fontwell fall earlier that month. He often comes good at this time of year, recording form figures of 61211FF141 (5-10) from January to March for a profit of

                    Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

                    Mahoning Valley - Race #5
                    Picks Notes
#1 Milwaukee Cat Think she has a little price chance from the fence in here, as one of her better running lines would keep her in the frame with these late, and she has some clear upside in the second start off the bench.
#6 Lady Abril Forward player doesn't typically pass many horses, but she's fast enough to be in a good spot early on and might be able to grind along at one pace to threaten late.
#4 War Moon She'd need to bring something similar to that last one if she's going to land this one on the rise, but that was a sharp run that might fit well here if she can hold form.
Race Summary Milwaukee Cat isn't all that consistent, but she can move forward second off the break for a barn that has been having a really nice go of things here in the last few weeks. Price should be right.

                    Mahoning Valley - Race #8
                    Picks Notes
#1 Blame it on Eddie Riser steps up at the right time after a string of really good tries dating back to November, and his better running lines look competitive with this group. Hoping he settles from the fence and gets a well-timed launch to his late rally.
#2 To Win He's probably the one to beat, and I wouldn't argue too much with anyone taking a fairly decisive stand with this guy. That said, he tends to land a lot of underneath shares and may get bet a bit again today.
#9 Blood Moon Forward player should be right up on the splits while getting back around two turns, and he might be the one to reel in as they head into the far turn.
Race Summary I feel like a handful of these might be trying to make the same move at the same time, and that might leave things open for someone to get a 'last laugh' run, and I wonder if that might be from Blame it on Eddie after an inside trip. #6 Across the Aisle might be useful on tickets that get deep enough for a second level.

                    Mahoning Valley - Race #9
                    Picks Notes
#2 Enchantedly She's not going to offer much of a price here, but she has come back in good form off the break in her last two starts, and she should be in a perfect spot to prompt the pace while getting around two turns. Tough here.
#8 Chorist I don't think she's out of the question if the top choice can't land this, as she's a pretty reliable local router who steps up off the claim -- never a bad sign for me.
#4 Wildcat Dream She's back around two turns after a modest sprint try, and she should be able to flash some pace while stretching back out. Seems capable for a piece.
Race Summary Enchantedly has shown better pace since returning from the layoff, and she should be in a perfect spot to control the escalation of the tempo into the far turn if Wildcat Dream wants to have a go on the engine early.

                      Picks Notes
#6 SWEET LADY LANA (2-1) Takes some catching in dream spot, alert break is the key.
#2 PAYNT THE KITTY (5-2) Finished third in 3 of last 4 starts despite racing wide.
#1 R HAPPY PLACE (8-1) Can be close-up from the rail in second start since September.
Race Summary SWEET LADY LANA dueled 4-wide and finished between the two favorites in a fast race at this level. She holds a decided tactical advantage from a favorable post if she avoids recurring slow starts. Bet on her to win for the first time in 12 go-rounds at Turf Paradise.

                      Turf Paradise - Race #4
                      Picks Notes
#6 DISCERNMENT (2-1) Powered clear for new barn that keeps ‘em sharp, taken to repeat.
#1 MS PARKSIDE (3-1) Sandwiched pair of easy wins around pair of troubled trips.
#2 GO GO SADIE (7-2) Lightly-raced 4yo seeks her third winning rally in a row.
Race Summary DISCERNMENT earned her top speed figure in a romp off the claim by Diodoro. She projects a good trip from just off the pace on the cutback to a short sprint. Bet to win and place and play 6-1 and 6-2 exactas.

                      Turf Paradise - Race #8

                              # 2 STRONG BREEZE 2/1
                              # 6 BIRCHMOUNT RD 7/2
TOMATER GATOR is the strongest bet in this race. Have to sense that this horse will run well again today. Should be considered - I like the figs from the last contest. Is a sharp contender based on figs garnered lately under today's conditions. STRONG BREEZE - Could provide positive returns based on very good recent Equibase Speed Figures with an average of 70. With Silvera getting the mount, watch out for this pony. BIRCHMOUNT RD - Has to be carefully examined against this field displaying very good figures recently and an average speed rating of 72 under similar conditions. Looks strong versus this group of horses in this race and will almost certainly be one of the leaders.
