Gulfstream Park Hotlist - February 10

            Feb. 09, 2023

By Bob Ehalt and Matt Shifman
            Hot List Key:
A : A preferred horse to watch B: Secondary horse to watch
*C: Went down 2 or more betting notches in the final 3 minutes and finished 1st through 3rd
*D: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 4th or worse
            * - 4 or more betting notches if 11-1 or more.
1st race – (3) Sing Scat (B) was boxed in and steadied last time and still finished third. Can atone for that setback here. (6) Breaking Bullet has a nice turn of speed and looks like the main foe. (4) Ancient Relic had a tough trip and deserves a second chance. (2) Morgan’s Bluff could be a contender off the Hess claim. Betting strategy: 3 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-3-4-6. Doubles: 2-3-4-6 with 1-4-5-6.
2nd race – (1) Oopsie Doopsie (C) was bet all the way down from 7-1 to 7-2 then flashed early speed before finishing a distant second. May hang on today. (5) Out for Myself was second last time and could improve off the D’Angelo claim. (6) Lady Petal drops in class and is worth a look. (4) Krabi is an interesting first time starter. Betting strategy: 1 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-4-5-6.
4th race – (3) Dither drops into a claimer for the first time and merits top billing. (8) Lieutenant Stan should find the going much easier in a claimer. (5) Retired seems ready for a good effort in his debut. (2) O Gangster was hurt by a wide trip but should save some ground here. Betting strategy: 3 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-3-5-8.
6th race – (7) Testa tired late after a year-long layoff. Should benefit from that effort and hang on here. (5) Covert Kat had some traffic issues last time but should bounce back here. (9) Papa Jojo was third at this level last time and cannot be ignored. (6) Sedona Red could move forward off his second start. Betting strategy: 7 to win, place. Exacta box: 5-6-7-9.
9th race – (8) Imposter Syndrome was claimed by Maker and should respond to a switch to Tapeta. (5) Sir Goosa closed fast for third and figures to be a main threat. (7) Mr. American was second in three of last four starts and belongs in the exotics. (2) First Place G might perk up on Tapeta. Betting strategy: 8 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-5-7-8.
No. Letter/Last race Today’s race Comment
            (3) Sing Scat B, 1/14 1 GP Finished a troubled third last time
            (1) Oopsie Doopsie C, 1/18 2 GP Took money and finished second

3rd race [OC 80k/N3X, 7F] – (2) Piece of My Heart has six top three finishes in a row for Linda Rice including a second in the Interborough three weeks ago. She is entered for the $80,000 claiming option having won at this condition two races back. (5) Mosienko returns from a December layoff after winning four races in a row at Saratoga and Aqueduct and then running third at this N3X level. (3) Self Isolation won three races in a row and then was overmatched in a pair of Aqueduct stakes races. She drops back to this level at which she is a contender. (1) Secret Love does her best running at the Big A where she has a record of 10: 3-2-1.
4th race [NY, Md Sp Wt, 7F] – (5) Limani (D) was bet down from 7-1 to 9-2 in her second start for Chad Brown back in April and moves from turf to dirt. The Brown barn is winning at a 50% clip at this winter meeting with 13 out of 16 in the money. (1) Laochi was claimed from her recent second-place finish for $40,000 by Linda Rice which came after a five month layoff which justifies the step up in class. (8) [B][U]Bavarian Cr

Main ticket: (in order of preference): 1-Atomic Drop; 2-Mobou
                  Backups/savers: 6-Tom’s X S

Forecast: With the rails out at 30 feet, inside draws are preferred in this one mile turf affair for first-level allowance Cal-bred older horses, especially in a field without much early speed. Atomic Drop is unproven on grass (three starts, one second place finish), but given the projected pace flow the Phil D’Amato-trained gelding should have every chance to inherit the role as the controlling speed and take it from there. A two-turn state-bred winner on dirt at Del Mar two races back, the son of Mucho Macho Man exits a much stronger (and productive) race and will be hard to catch if he is allowed to bowl along on the front end, his preferred running style. Mobou, away since October, likely will draft into a comfortable stalking position and be the one to fear most. A prior winner over this course and distance, the son of Uncle Mo shows a healthy, steady series of workouts that should have him plenty fit, though it must be noted that he does not have a history of firing his best shot fresh, so a lack of recency could make him vulnerable. Though he is considerably slower on speed figures than the two main contenders, Tom’s X S has plenty of room to improve and could be capable of producing a significant forward move in his third career starts. Back on grass following a maiden state-bred dirt sprint win last month, the James Cassidy-trained gelding has the pedigree to stretch out successfully so we’ll consider the Tom’s Tribute gelding as a “must use,” at least as a backup or a saver.

Main ticket: (in order of preference): 5-Loana; 2-Filthy Fast
                  Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Loana gets blinkers and Lasix for her sophomore debut and in a race begging to be won by an off-the-pace type the Craig Dollase-trained filly seems the obvious top pick. Her two sprint races last summer weren’t bad at all (she was six lengths clear of the rest when second at Los Alamitos two runs back), so if she returns as well as she left the daughter of Neolithic can produce the last run with a patient ride she appears to be prefer. Her recent work tab is brief but good, and the barn has solid stats with layoff runners, so we’ll assume that she’s fit and ready. Filthy Fast displayed good speed in her debut last month before being overrun in the stretch and winding up a distant second, but with that race behind her the Luis Mendez-trained sophomore has a right to be fitter and stronger today. She gets a break in the weights and shows three solid drills since raced, but today’s extra half furlong probably won’t do her any favors. Both should be included in rolling exotic play with Loana receiving preference on top.

Main ticket (in order of preference): 6-Lasmuigh; 2-Habeas
                  Backups/savers: none

Forecast: We’ll double the race in this below average maiden claiming turf sprint for 3-year-olds while conceding that neither of the two main contenders can be deemed trustworthy. Best advice is to tread lightly. Lasmuigh didn’t show much of anything in his U.S. debut when facing infinitely stronger straight maiden foes over this course and distance in late December, but based on his Irish form, the Phil D’Amato-trained gelding should find this assignment well within his range. He gets top billing by default. Habeas brought $450,000 at last year’s OBS April Sale but after just two starts is being culled by the barn, not an encouraging sign. However, he’s a fit on numbers and adds blinkers, so the son of Tonalist must be considered a major player.

Main ticket (in order of preference): 6-A Broken Breeze; 3-Sacred Beauty
                  Backups/Savers: none

Forecast: Three of six entrants in this $12,500 claiming main track miler for fillies and mares exit the same race last month won by A Broken Breeze, who can score right back if she can turn in two alike. While consistency has never been her strong suit, the veteran mare apparently really prefers the Santa Anita main track, so let’s hope she can continue her good form with another off-the-pace score. Sacred Beauty, second without mishap as the favorite in that same race, always has preferred to run second or third (nine times) rather than win (twice), so but it wouldn’t take much to turn the tables on ‘Breeze. In a race that probably should be left alone, we’ll include both in our rolling exotic play while otherwise sitting it out.

Main ticket (in order of preference): 5-Seismic Spirit; 8-Terrier
                  Backups/savers: 7-Raji

Forecast: This is a split of the third race, a high-priced ($62,500) maiden claiming turf dash for sophomores that is fraught with danger. Anything can happen. Seismic Spirit finished an okay second in a moderate straight maiden grass sprint at Aqueduct last fall and today surfaces in a seller for the first time after being considered good enough by original trainer Wesley Ward to run in the Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot in June. He gets blinkers and Lasix while attracting top jockey Juan Hernandez, so we’ll put him on top but certainly not single him. Terrier is a first time starter from the Tim Yakteen barn with Flavian Prat taking the colt, so the son of Into Mischief went through the ring as a yearling for $260,000 and apparently already has been given up on by his connections even before his first outing. A gate recent gate work (4f, :47.4hg, fourth fastest of 74) looks okay on paper, so in an unclassified affair he has to be tossed in. Raji was well beaten vs. straight maidens in both of his two prior starts but actually earned okay speed figures despite never offering a threat. The drop in class and the switch to grass provides hope that improvement is possible.

Main ticket (in order of preference): 1-Fireman Dan; 2-Kant Beat the Rock; 3-Mitico
                  Backups/savers: none

Forecast: The inside three runners appear to be the main contenders in this restricted (nw-2) $16,000 claiming sprint for older horses. The problem is that none of the three appear to own a desire to win (they’re all one-for-something), so here’s another in the rolling exotic sequence that requires a spread. Fireman Dan, in the frame in his last pair but just 1-for-17 overall, is the one to beat based on his sharp runner-up effort at this level over this track and distance last month in which third place finisher Nolo Contesto came back to win easily. A repeat of that performance would be good enough. Kant Beat the Rock lack gate speed but has numbers that fit and takes a significant class drop to his lowest level effort, while Mitico has enough early speed to possibly shake loose early and become the controlling speed.

Main ticket (in order of preference): 1-Maglev
                  Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Maglev has much in is favor in this downhill turf sprint for second level allowance older horses. The Irish-bred gelding was a respectable second in a stronger-than-par race over this course and distance behind Motorious in his first outing in almost a year and seems likely to produce a forward move with that tightener under his belt. He shows the same pattern that produced a smart win in the Baffle Stakes last year, so despite his lack of tactical speed we’re expecting the Mark Glatt-trained gelding to be along in plenty of time. At 6/5 on the morning line, he’s a short price rolling exotic single.

Main ticket (in order of preference): 7-Sheza Girly Girl; 1-Glorious Spring
                  Backups/savers: 8-Unwritten Code

Forecast: This competitive extended main track sprint for first-level allowance/optional claiming fillies and mares requires a spread in rolling exotic play. Sheza Girly Girl returns to her ($20,000) claim level after a couple of below standard runs when facing tougher foes in stakes and allowance company over the all-weather at Golden Gate Fields and seems quite capable of regaining her winning from against this group. A prior winner over the Santa Anita main track, the veteran daughter of Richard’s Kid has the proper style for this extended sprint trip (she’s a perfect 1-for-1 at six and one-half furlongs) and with some help up front should make her presence felt in the closing stages. Glorious Spring is a tad slower on speed figures that what she needs to be to win, but she’s lightly raced with further improvement likely, makes a positive jockey switch to Frankie, and could be dangerous if the pace up front is fast enough. Unwritten Code has reeled off three consecutive wins and once again will be the one to catch from her cozy outside post position. Her most recent score was accomplished on turf but she’s a two-time winner over the local main track and will take them as far as she can. This distance, though, might be a bit problematic for her.

Main ticket (in order of preference): 1-Mamba Cool ; 3-Foothill
                  Backups/savers: 7-Give Me the Lute

Forecast: The finale is a grass grab bag for state-bred allowance/optional claiming Cal-bred older horses that offers several possibilities. Let’s zero in on the closing types due to the presence of early speed among several contenders that should guarantee legitimate early fractions. Mambo Cool has been freshened since September but has won off a layoff in the past, goes for a barn that has excellent stats with comebackers, and shows a solid series of workouts at Los Alamitos that should have him fit enough to fire a big shot off the bench. In the frame of four of five outings over the Santa Anita turf course (including a win), the son of Unusual Heat lands the favorable rail, and with good racing luck could produce a dangerous late kick under regular pilot Umberto Rispoli. At 5-1 on the morning line, he warrants a play. Foothill may have been a short horse off a year layoff when a close third in a starter allowance affair last month and is likely to be fitter and tougher today. He picks up Frankie and will benefit from a patient ride that he is sure to receive. Give Me the Lute plummets in class (he’s entered for $20,000) and is winless in seven prior starts over the local lawn. He’s stretching out again and is certain to employ gate-to-wire tactics, and in doing will compromise the other pace types. We’ll use him as a backup or a saver but nothing more.

Al Cimaglia: Cal Expo Pick 4 Analysis-$25,000 Guaranteed Pool

                    February 10, 2023 | By Al Cimaglia
Cal Expo begins the weekend with a 10-race card. The popular 0.20 Pick 4 starts in Race 7. The sequence has a $25,000 guaranteed pool with a 16% takeout, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

                    Race 7

4-Alwaysalittlemore(4-1)-Plano sat in the pocket last week and raced hard to the wire but was no match for HF Flower. Should be battling the 2 below and for those not wanting to single #7 this mare should be on the ticket.
5-Jessie Girl (8-1)-Comes out of the same race as the one above but was far back early. Did rally but needed to go 3-wide versus a well-meant winner and the trip took its toll. Paced the back half in 57.1 and the shorter field tonight should help.
7-Wonder Of Love (6/5)-On a form spree and was much the best as an odds on choice leaving from post 10 on Sunday. This 5-year-old is a perfect 4 for 4 in 2023 and has captured 7 of 9 lifetime wins in the past 2 years. This is the 2nd start for the Ellis barn and is back in for a $6,000 tag. Deserves respect but this field could be more of a challenge, using and looking to others who have some value.

                    Race 8

1-Lil Screamer (3-1)-Even effort in last, faces easier here and hoping won't be over bet. Gets Shawn Thayer between the pipes and he has been hot. The 2-5 start was on an off track, could be better on a dry surface with a new pilot.
3-Outlawburntpopcorn (6-1)-This veteran drops and gets a ++ driver change in James Kennedy as the trainer hands over the lines. This was Kennedy's choice over the 7/8 and should race near the top of the stack.
8-Brooklyn Wind Up (5/2)-The Kiel barn has won 25% of its starts over the past 30 days and Longo will do the steering. The post should help the price and could win from out here if dialed on high. Wasn't Kennedy's choice, he stayed loyal to Pacheco (3).

                    Race 9

2-Ivar (1-1)-Drew off by over 8 lengths versus this kind on 2-3 and will likely be 1/5 again. Short field won't hurt chances and the Ellis barn has had the magic touch. This will be the 2nd start off a claim and the last race was on an off track.
7-Ideal One A (4-1)-This 12-year-old probably has good enough speed to beat anyone in this field. But he does have some issues behind the gate and goes off-stride at times. Finished a beaten 2nd, 8 lengths behind Ivar last time but broke at the start. Svendsen steers again and if this veteran can have a clean trip he could make a race of it. Won in 153.4 at CalX last year.

                    Race 10

2-Cal's Hope (4-1)-This race is devoid of form but this 5-year-old gets a ++ driver change in Plano and that is enough to get a spot on this ticket. Doesn't like to pass horses down the lane so could be forwardly placed and look to shake loose late.
3-Bobleeswagger (3-1)-Makes the 2nd start for the Tremblay barn after breaking stride on Sunday. Svendsen is back steering again and gets post relief. Not liking a short price but should be a player against this crew.
6-Outlawgrandetorino (15-1)-Was far back early in a gapped out field and was caught 3-wide on the backside. Still kept coming in an ugly race. Will look for a better trip and finish at a price, in a battle of basement dwellers.

                    0.20 Pick 4

                    4,5,7/1,3,8/2,7/2,3,6
                    Total Bet=$10.80

Laurel Park Pick 4 Analysis | Friday, Feb. 10

                      February 10, 2023 | By Frank Carulli
Laurel Park’s Late Pick 4 this Friday is sure to be a race to the wire – the first wire, that is, for three 7F sprints in the sequence. Bettors will have to navigate large fields in the one-turn sprints if they want to cash in on the 50-cent wager. Here’s a closer look at the action:

LRL 6th race (2:56 EST) -- Seven of the 10 entrants in this $5,000 claiming race at one mile are battle tested and six-figure earners. HOT N SPICY LOVE returns to his claim level after he followed the move of winning favorite Oxide (7-33, $213k) and finished third for an $8,000 tag. LET US MAKE GOLD was outrun by hard-hitting Kozy’s Wildcat (6-16, $159k) and others in a fast comeback race at Charles Town, but he earned the top three speed figures of his career when he won at 5-1 odds or higher in the fall. He is worth using at a price again in his second start ever around one turn.

LRL 7th race (3:27 EST) -- Good recent form abounds in this starter allowance, as evidenced by the field’s combined 22/6-4-4 record since December. ARISTOCRATIC has speed, a nose for the wire and a $500k bankroll thanks to a 49/10-12-11 main-track record, but the 9-year-old seeks his first win at 7F. TOP BOSS is versatile, in top form and won easily at the distance on short rest to start the year. ALPHA CHI RIO benefited from a lively pace when he rallied for second behind a sharp winner, but he could revert to front-end tactics that produced a 3-for-6 mark at Laurel Park. All that being said, hit the ‘ALL’ button for Pick 4 purposes.

LRL 8th race (3:58 EST) -- SKIPPER SUE exits a productive 5-1/2F allowance, will benefit from the added ground and will be closer to the pace if her two recent bullet workouts are an indicator. MAVILUS plays to a steady beat, just topped $200k in earnings and seeks her third win in a row at this distance.

LRL 9th race (4:29 EST) -- Both halves of the Hugh McMahon-trained entry pose a winning threat. BEST WORST IDEA gets Lasix off the claim and lost all chance with a stumbled start in a race that produced a maiden $30k winner and two runners-up. She met the likes of Tappin Josie (3-8, $123k) and stakes winner Titoschngedmyluck in her debut last year. DONNA’S COURAGE gets class relief after three in-the-money finishes in a row and has long sprint experience that most of her rivals don’t. ICESTORMING was a willing second to runaway odds-on winner Willful Desire at 6F with first-time Lasix.

                      Suggested 50-cent Ticket

                      LRL 6th race: 2, 4
                      LRL 7th race: ALL
                      LRL 8th race: 2, 7
                      LRL 9th race: 1, 2

                      COST: $36

                        Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

                        Fair Grounds - Race #3
#4 Where's the Pumps She moved forward in a big way in her local debut when getting in for a tag, and I think she's in line for another great trip tracking the speed today. Probably tough right back in a realistic spot.
#1 What Can I Say I'd want a better price than she offered last time out, but she might be enough of a late grinder to give her a chance to get past some of the pace players.
#3 Country Lady She flattered the top choice when romping by better than 10 to graduate after chasing that one two starts back, and obviously something like her last would make her tough, but I think she might come back to earth today.
Race Summary Where's the Pumps was ready for her local debut after the first run at Delta, and she looks like a good fit back with winners here with a great spying trip waiting for her.
                        Fair Grounds - Race #6
#1 Righteous Freedom He has given way late in both lifetime starts, but he exits a good maiden race back in December and will probably try to hustle early for a bit of position from the inside. Might be a playable mid-range price.
#8 Ourperfectprince Think he might be ready enough on the debut to outrun his odds, and he brings a big Louisiana pedigree with him to post. Get a look on the track, but he might be worth including.
#10 Spirit of Dreams Debuter is another worth checking out on the tote and track in advance of this one, and he has turned in some snappy works along the way for a team that can get them ready to go.
Race Summary Righteous Freedom might offer an okay price off the last run, but he wasn't totally embarrassed in that tough spot last time out and it would be interesting to see if he can manage to sit a pocket trip.
                        Fair Grounds - Race #8
#4 Drewzano He turned in a couple nice recent efforts and now goes for the new team with competitive form against this group. Think he lands a really good trip near the top in a race without a ton of confirmed early burn.
#1 Maintenance Matt He was second to the top choice when they met two starts back and chased him again last out, so he has some tables to turn. That said, he might get a cozy finishing trip from the inside here.
#5 Just Blaze He went to the bench in flat form last season and now returns to face the easiest group he has seen in some time. Wouldn't surprise.
Race Summary Drewzano should be fast enough to up on the splits early on, and I'm not really sold on any of the others in here, so I'll take his solid recent form and edge in the race shape to give him a strong lean to end the day.

                          Golden Gate - Race #3
#6 NOSHEWONT (5-2) Yes she can with better set-up and a move forward off latest try.
#1 SUE GENEROUS (3-1) Took money on class drop at Santa Anita but was outrun at 6F.
#5 HALLELUJAH BABY (15-1) Drops, stretches out, gets in light with blinkers added.
Race Summary NOSHEWONT rallied into a soft pace to finish second with first-time Lasix off a six-week layoff. She has plenty of one-mile experience and should get a livelier pace to run at. Bet to win and place.
                          Golden Gate - Race #5
#4 PERFORMATIVE (3-1) Hit board in both starts, the latest despite racing ‘greenly,’ adds Lasix.
#7 TIGER HEAT (6-1) Debuts for Wong, shows series of gate works to get ready.
#1 LOOKSGOODONYOUTHO (2-1) Set moderate pace, well clear, got caught by 2-1 first-time starter.
Race Summary PERFORMATIVE ranged up on the dueling leaders after he broke in the air at the start, lost ground turning for home and surged too late to catch the favorite. If he minds his manners, he’s a good bet to break his maiden. Play a 4-ALL exacta.
                          Golden Gate - Race #8
#4 AWESOME MAUI GIRL (10-1) Busy work tab shows some decent works; dam was $162k earner.
#5 SASSY TINKERBELL (6-1) Last two sprint attempts were good, gets second-time Lasix.
#7 OTTER POP (9-5) Three seconds in last five sprints, four as a short-priced favorite.
Race Summary Treat this $12,500 maiden claiming race as a $25,000 sprint because the six 3yo fillies that have run are taking a class drop. That being said, take a price stab on first-time starter AWESOME MAUI GIRL, who shows a steady work tab dating back to November 22 and whose dam, Awesome Jill, was a debut winner at Churchill Downs and a stakes-placed earner of $162k. The low-profile barn makes her worth a win and place bet and part of a 4-5-7 exacta box.

BEAUDACIOUS is my pick and is a respectable value bet given the line. Could provide positive dividends based on respectable recent Equibase Speed Figures with an average of 96. Earned a strong Equibase Speed Figure in the last race. Can run another good one in this race. Looks quite good for the conditions of this outing today, showing solid numbers in turf route races lately. SO I'M TOLD - Has solid early pace and ought to fare soundly versus this group. FOOTHILL - Could provide positive gains based on very good recent speed figures with an average of 94. Is worth looking at and may be a bet - strong speed figs (95 average) at today's distance and surface lately.
