    RACE 1: Post: 12:30 PT Grade: B
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 3-Runninwiththeboyz; 1-Dendera
    Backups/savers: 7-Control Function

Forecast: The Saturday opener is a starter allowance turf miler for older fillies and mares that requires a spread in rolling exotic play. Runninwiththeboyz is a lightly raced and progressive filly with rising speed figures and a perfect record (two-for-two) on grass. The Jeff Mullins-trained daughter of Liam’s Map will be stretching out for the first time but based on pedigree and running style she should have no difficulty handling two turns. At 3-1 on the morning line, she’s our top pick. Dendera, first off the claim for Leonard Powell after narrowly missing in a $32,000 straight claimer, lands the good rail, picks up leading rider Juan Hernandez, and has numbers that are good enough to win at this level. She projects to inherit an ideal second flight, ground-saving trip and then have every chance to seal the deal from the quarter pole home. Control Function exits a first level allowance race and didn’t do badly when closing with interest to be fourth without threatening. This is an easier bunch, so if she can drop over from her outside draw, get some cover, and then find room to rally, she should be heard from in the late stages.

    RACE 2: Post: 1:00 PT Grade: C
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 6-Never Sway; 2-Adam’s Creed; 1-Big Bell; 7-Parco
    Backups/savers: none

Forecast: The second race is another “need to spread” affair for older fillies and mares at six and one-half furlongs in a restricted (nw-2) $16,000 seller. Never Say is a late-running sprinter with the proper style for this extended sprint trip. She is making her first start for a barn that has good stats (22%, strong ROI) with the first-off-the-claim angle after being a too-little-too-late third in a similar affair last month. With today’s extra half furlong to work with, the Milton Pineda-trained daughter of Clubhouse Ride will have every chance to tag the leaders close home. Adam’s Creed was overmatched in starter allowance company on grass last time out but is realistically spotted today while returning to the main track. Like our top pick, she figures to be doing her best work late. Big Bell didn’t earn much of a figure when beating bottom-rung maiden $20,000 claimers off a long layoff earlier this season, but she has room to improve, acquires top jockey Juan Hernandez, and has finished first or second in three of four career starts over the local main track. Parco projects to be the controlling speed from her cozy outside draw and for that reason alone is a “must use” in rolling exotic play. In a race that probably should be treated with caution, we’ll use all four in rolling exotic play.

    RACE 3: Post: 1:29 PT Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 5-Jetovator; 4-Southern Horse
    Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Jetovator shows up in a claimer for the first time and at age seven this is probably where he belongs at this stage of his career. A four time winner over the Santa Anita turf course, the Peter Eurton-trained gelding has been freshened since October, shows a steady if not flashy series of recent workouts to have him fit and ready, and has run well off layoffs in the past. He looks like the most dangerous of the speed types. We’ll also toss in Southern Horse, now in the Phil D’Amato barn and a prototype late-running turf sprinter on his best day. “Win rider” Juan Hernandez returns and will have this eight-year-old veteran rolling late. Both should be included in rolling exotic play.

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________

    RACE 4: Post: 1:59 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 6-Crowning Gold; 5-Army Star
    Backups/Savers: 2-Crypto Ride

Forecast: Crowning Gold andArmy Star , two-three finishers in a similar starter optional claiming sprint for sophomores, meet again, this time at the extended sprint distance of six and one-half furlongs. ‘Gold took a clear lead in that mid-January affair but was worn down late, missing by a neck while almost three clear of ‘Star, and a repeat performance today should make him hard to beat. Blinkers are removed, Mike Smith stays, and the son of Harbor the Gold projects to be the controlling speed. ‘Star, a beaten choice last time out, didn’t get the best of runs and seems certain to benefit from today’s extra half furlong. A repeat of his sharp win two races back puts him right there. Also worth including somewhere on your ticket is the class dropper Crypto Ride, beaten a head in the King Glorious Stakes at Los Alamitos two races back over a mile before finishing fourth in last month’s Cal Cup Derby. He might be most effective as a late-running sprinter and is a first time Lasix user.

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________

    RACE 5: Post: 2:29 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 6-Relaxed Artist
    Backups/savers: 1-Papa Tiger

Forecast: We’ll try to get by using just two in the fifth race, a restricted (nw-2) six furlong turf sprint for older horses. Relaxed Artist, away since the fall and dropping into a seller for the first time, appears well-spotted to achieve his first North American victory. The Irish-bred colt is most comfortable when allowed to settle early and blast home, and against this group the Mark Glatt-trained colt should be capable of doing just that. A strong, healthy series of workouts leading up to this race is a positive sign for a trainer that has solid stats with layoff runners. Bay Area invader Papa Tiger represents inside speed in his first try on grass, and if he duplicates his all-weather form over this surface the Brian Koriner-trained gelding could be tough to catch. On pure numbers he’s a bit shy of where he needs to be, but the son of Smiling Tiger may stick better over the local lawn than he did up north, so at 5-1 on the morning he needs to be included.

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
    __________________________________________________ ____________________________

    RACE 6: Post: 3:02 PT Grade: C+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 6-Sauls Call; 9-Midnight Special; 10-Oil Can Knight
    Backups/savers: none

Forecast: In a race that might be best left alone, we’ll go three-deep in this $10,000 claiming sprint for older horses while putting Sauls Call on top. A winner of four races from just 10 starts but off the track for nearly a year, the son of Stay Thirsty is tough to beat when he’s feeling up to it, but with a slow series of workouts and returning at the bottom level, there has to be a serious question of condition surrounding the Steve Miyadi-trained gelding. The good news is this stable has a terrific record with layoff runners (42% with a massive ROI according to DRF stats), so we’ll operate under the assumption that he’s fit enough to fire a big shot. “Win rider” Abel Cedillo returns, another promising sign. Midnight Special is winless in four starts over the Santa Anita main track, but the 7-year-old gelding has never raced this cheaply and may have found his friends after finishing a not-too-bad fourth of 10 in a $12,5000 dash last month. He’s worth using at 6-1 on the morning line, as is Oil Can Knight, listed at 7/2 following a confidence-building win at Los Alamitos three weeks ago. He loves the Santa Anita dirt track (five wins in 11 starts) and shows multiple successes under Edwin Maldonado, who gets the call.
    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
    __________________________________________________ ____________________________

    RACE 7: Post: 3:34 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 1-Aligato
    Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Finally, we found a single. Aligato was quite unlucky when a runner-up in a similar affair over nine furlongs on grass last month but with clear sailing today and a bit more pace up front this tough and consistent gelding should be able to return to the winner’s circle. The shortening to a flat mile, especially from the advantageous rail post position, certainly should help, as will the switch to top jockey Juan Hernandez, so at 5/2 on the morning line we’ll make the Mark Glatt-trained gelding a strong win play and rolling exotic single.

    __________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ ____________________

    RACE 8: Post: 4:06 PT Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 5-Murray; 3-Let’sgetlucky
    Backups/savers: 4-Spirit of Makena

Forecast: Murray, once highly regarded in the Bob Baffert barn, makes his first start since last July, and because he won his debut (by almost 11 lengths) we know he can fire fresh. He was good enough to earn speed figures as a 2-year-old that make him a solid fit against this group of seasoned vets and the work tab leads us to believe that he’ll be tight as a drum for his return. At 7/2 on the morning line under top rider Juan Hernandez, we’ll put him on top. Letsgetlucky fought hard to the end but missed by a head in tougher race last summer at Del Mar than the one he’s entered in today, so if the Munnings gelding is ready in his comeback (and he’s won fresh in the past) he’ll be a major player over a track that he’s won twice on from just four starts. Spirit of Makena was quite impressive in a pair of outings at Del Mar, a first-out maiden sprint win in August in a fast race and then when beaten a head in a first level allowance main track miler in a highly rated affair the following month. He was entered in a January 15 extended sprint at this level but was scratched and didn’t return to the work tab until two weeks later, so there has to be a bit of question surrounding his current condition. With that to ponder, we suspect he may need one, but we’ll still include him on our ticket as a backup.
    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
    __________________________________________________ ____________________________

    RACE 9: Post: 4:38 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 10-Fun Money; 7-Itzel; 4-Manhattan Jungle
    Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Fun Money clearly prefers turf to dirt and a sharp runner-up effort over this course and distance two races back in a strong allowance race points her out as the one to beat in this year’s edition of the Sweet Life Stakes. The Doug O’Neill-trained homebred has an ideal pace stalking style to keep her free of trouble, so while she’s probably one of several that might be capable of winning this race she’s probably the most dependable. Itzel earned a strong number and was visually impressive when beating maiden claimers over the flat course last month, so much so that this leap into stakes company could easily be within her range for new trainer Peter Miller. She projects to be on near the lead throughout and at 6-1 on the morning might prove to be an excellent gamble. Manhattan Jungle turns back from a couple of route tries, most recently when second in the Blue Norther Stakes after pressing the pace throughout. We suspect she’ll be more comfortable sprinting – she certainly was in France – so we anticipate the Michael McCarthy-trained Irish-bred sophomore will be held up early and allowed to take hold late.

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
    __________________________________________________ ____________________________

    RACE 10: Post: 5:09 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 10-Nuclear; 2-Precision Strike
    Backups/savers: 8-Boss Sully

Forecast: In a race begging to be won by a fresh face, let’s go with the $1.550 million yearling purchase Nuclear on top in this six furlong grass sprint for sophomores. A long-striding colt who’ll likely do his best work eventually around two turns, the son of Justify doesn’t really have all that much to beat in a race that came up lighter than par, so from his cozy outside draw under leading jockey Juan Hernandez the John Sadler-trained colt may be capable of winning at first asking. Precious Strike has shown flashes of good speed in his a.m. drills for trainer Doug O’Neill and looks like a live item in an open fray. The son of Gun Runner brought $485,000 at the 2022 OBS April sale and, like our top pick, won’t have to be a world beater to win from this group at first asking. Boss Sully is a first timer by Street Boss from the Brian Koriner barn. We haven’t seen any of his workouts on video but there are several fast drills on his resume to indicate he has at least some ability.

Al Cimaglia: Meadowlands Late Pick 4 Analysis

      February 11, 2023 | By Al Cimaglia
The Meadowlands has a 14-race program, and the feature comes in Race 9 the Big Game Trackmaster Series Final with a $30,000 purse. The 0.50 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 10. The sequence has a $50,000 guaranteed pool with a 15% takeout, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

      Race 10

3-Belmont Royale N (7/2)-Raced well in what was probably a needed start at Yonkers but was in with a tough group and finished a close 3rd. Gets some class relief here, should get a better trip and could be sitting on a big try.
7-Nicholas Beach (3-1)-Team Jen/Joe entry was off since 8-6-22 but has put in 2 good starts and raced from the back in both. Should have a solid foundation in place to be driven more aggressively to battle the one above for top honors.

      Race 11

1-Ladyford Dollar GB (3-1)-Stepped up in last, took all the money and was caught late to finish 2nd. Bumps again, should be bet and thinking Gingras may not look to be on the point every step of the way. Could be forwardly placed and will look for a 2nd/3rd quarter brush to the top.
9-Ohoka Chopper N (12-1)-My thinking is there will be a quick pace and if so Marcus Miller should have this 8-year-old in gear to be there at the wire. Has hit the board in 2 of 3 at M1 this year with the same pilot and should offer a price but needs to mind manners.

      Race 12

2-Concur (6-1)-Gets significant post relief, needs to race near the top of the stack and should be placed there tonight. Using and will fade the 3-1 morning line chalk (1) who is looking for his 3rd straight picture.
3-Midnight Day (7/2)-Another who gets necessary post relief and has been in the hunt leaving from the 8 &10 holes in the last 2 races. This will be the 1st start off a claim for the Polhemus barn and was Dunn's pick over #9.
4-Dash Of Danger (12-1)-Looking for a price that knows his way to the Big M winner's circle, and landed here. This 10-year-old beat easier 2 back and has posted 7 wins in 33 M1 starts. Should be in striking range at the top of the lane and could surprise if the fractions are hot.

      Race 13

3-Always Better (7/2)-Willing to toss last from post 10 and will hope the price isn't lower than the morning line. This will be the 4th start for the Alexander barn and should fit nicely with this group. Stratton needs to provide a sharp steer for this camera shy 4-year-old.
4-Rockin Marty A (3-1)-This beaten chalk was too far back in the early going and should be better after shedding post 9. In this spot Marcus Miller could have the pedal down to land a close-up seat.
7-Real Peace (9/2)-Has been racing from the back and now this is the 4th start off the bench. Dave Miller sticks and looking for a more aggressive start which will lead to a better finish.

      0.50 Late Pick 4

      3,7/1,9/2,3,4/3,4,7
      Total Bet=$18

        Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

        Fair Grounds - Race #6
#2 Supremely He might get a pretty good trip while tracking the pace from close range, and I like that he stays in special weight company after a couple of decent, but non-threatening efforts.
#6 Cloud Without Rein He has had 11 chances and doesn't typically stay with much energy late, but he's surely quick enough to find the front with these, and there isn't a ton of super serious sprint pace signed on. Wouldn't shock to see him wire these.
#3 Trumptastic He stayed on well in the debut run behind an easy winner, and he's got some upside with that first trip to post under his belt. Dangerous with any upside.
Race Summary Think Supremely has a chance to get home here with the right kind of trip waiting for him, and he might be in the right spot to assume command if Cloud Without Rein tires late again.
        Fair Grounds - Race #7
#1/1A Lothenbach entry One half drawn on the also-eligibles for turf and the other half drawn for the main, and both look capable if they get to go. Really like #1 Kathaan's confident score last time out.
#2 Clara Peeters She's back off the bench after facing some decent groups here last year and proving competitive with similar along the way, and she should trip out while tracking the pace if she's ready to roll off the layoff.
#6 Get on the Bus Tough to split this one and #5 Soft Touch, but they both have a claim on top honors here if they can bring their best, but 'Bus transferred form nicely out of California and fits well here.
Race Summary Consider how this field looks after scratches and/or surface switches, as Block and Pessin each have a livewire that needs a break of some kind to get into the gate. Clara Peeters should get the right kind of run to give her a chance to score off the break in the main body.
        Fair Grounds - Race #8
#7 Omaha Red No clue if he's going to stay this kind of trip, but he should be right up on the splits early while stretching out and comes out of a couple tough spots. Maybe he'll like the more leisurely tempo, and he should be rateable enough to sit just off the speed drawn outside if they want to try to relax.
#10 Treasury His last three running lines all stack up nicely here, and he probably has to have a go of it again from the outside draw here. Respect, but don't think he has to win this.
#3 Britain's Kitten Nothing wrong with the recent form, and he just beat a small group of sophomores in that off-turf stakes run last out. Worry he might be just a bit overbet.
Race Summary Omaha Red gets a route test today after holding his own against some pretty solid sprinters, and he might be able to work out a perfect first-jump trip behind the speed.

          Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

          Laurel Park - Race #2
#8 STARDUST ZIGGY (7-2) Seeks third winning rally in a row at as many distances, gets Lasix again.
#3 FREDDYNESS (5-2) Gets makeover, takes some catching if he handles the added ground.
#6 THENCOMEMORNING (20-1) Filly upstaged pair of seconds with maiden romp, steps up for new barn.
Race Summary STARDUST ZIGGY looks to remain perfect as a gelding, having overcome a steadied start to break his maiden and digging in for a repeat victory at this level. He ranged up in-hand on the final turn, then ‘hung a bit giving back the lead’ before re-surging to repeat. The one-mile distance makes him suitable for a win and place bet.
          Laurel Park - Race #4
#5 OXIDE (6-1) Shortens up off Magee re-claim, will be running late, should get lively pace flow.
#6 QUICK TEMPO (7-2) Terrorized Laurel Park foes to three-peat, but failed at 1-to-5 odds in latest.
#1 FLAMING EAST (8-1) Went wire-to-wire with Lasix to earn his top speed figure, steps up today
Race Summary OXIDE tries sprinting again after he romped in an $8,000 claiming race at one mile but was no threat in a faster-paced follow-up on the class rise. In the race he was re-claimed, Hot N Spicy Love, his new stablemate, finished third and came back Friday with a strong winning rally for $5,000. Bet to win and place.
          Laurel Park - Race #5
#1 DUKE OF DOOLY (10-1) Plagued by troubled starts, sheds 10 pounds, can reward loyal backers.
#8 DANNY’S WINKSTER (5-1 Has long sprint experience, should sit ideal trip in speed-laden field.
#4 HE’S PURE TALENT (5-1 Takes the plunge from MSW company in second start for Gonzalez.
Race Summary DUKE OF DOOLY, the beaten favorite in his last three starts, steps up off the claim. He gets in light-weighted with second-time Lasix and is worth a price stab at 10-1 on the morning line. Bet to win and place.

Keeneland Select Derby Preps Hotlists - February 11, 2023

                      Feb. 10, 2023

By Bob Ehalt and Matt Shifman
                      The $250,000 Withers Stakes (G3), Aqueduct, Race 7, 3:44 p.m. ET
                      (4) Hit Show is yet another promising 3-year-old from the Brad Cox barn. He was entered in the Southwest Stakes (G3) at Oaklawn Park and scratched in favor of the Withers where he avoids racing against any of his stablemates. Favored in all three of his starts he romped to a more than five-length victory in his debut at Keeneland, was fourth in a Churchill allowance and then returned to the winner’s circle in an Oaklawn allowance going a mile. He finds a field that has several horses that prefer to be part of the early going which should give Hit Show an ideal set-up. (1) Artic Arrogance brings his excellent record with first or second-place finishes in all five starts to his third start on the New York road to the Kentucky Derby. He was second in the Remsen (G2) and the Jerome earning eight Derby qualifying points. He gets blinkers on for meet leading trainer Linda Rice which should further enhance his early speed tendencies. Arctic Arrogance won 2 of his first 3 starts against NY-breds. (6) Ninetyprcentmaddie ships up from Parx Racing where this Pennsylvania-bred won his first three starts with two wins against open company and a state-bred stake. Last month he was second in the Parx Juvenile behind a horse that is undefeated in four starts. (3) Jungfrau joins the original Withers field for Bill Mott whose barn is winning important races at an amazing rate including the Pegasus World Cup (G1) and the Holy Bull (G3). Jungfrau is a Juddmonte home-bred that was awarded a maiden victory in his most recent start when he was bumped out in the stretch and still missed by only a nose. The way the Mott barn is winning this guy must be part of your plays.Betting strategy: Exacta key box: 4 with 1, 3, 6. Trifecta box: 1, 3, 4, 6.
The $100,000 El Camino Real Derby, Golden Gate, Race 8, 4:45 p.m. PT
                      (8) Nullarbor hasn’t raced on a synthetic surface but that hasn’t stopped Baffert from winning this race in the past. He took a nice step forward last time and continued improvement will make him hard to beat. (2) Chasing the Chaos is on a nice upward swing and should be the main rival. (4) Passarando seems to prefer synthetics and should perk up in this spot. (1) Gilmore is also trained by Baffert and could be a threat from the rail. Betting strategy: 8 to win. Exacta and trifecta box: 1-2-4-8.
The $250,000 Sam F. Davis Stakes (G3), Tampa Bay Downs – Race 10
The Sam F. Davis drew a full field of a dozen 3-year-olds that will take their chance on the Kentucky Derby trail with qualifying points of 20-8-4-2 available to the top five eligible finishers. (9) Champions Dream began his career in the barn of Danny Gargan where he won his debut at Saratoga with a clear front-end victory. In the Champagne (G1) he caught a sloppy track and finished fifth but came back to win the Nashua (G3) at Aqueduct. He moved to the barn of Hall of Fame trainer Mark Casse and rallied for second in the Pasco at Tampa missing the win by a neck. Casse gets his horses in shape with prep races and got an excellent one in the Pasco. Tyler Gaffalione comes over from Gulfstream Park to ride. (7) Dubyuhnell has a win on the Derby trail already when he pressed the pace in the Remsen (G2) and beat a game Arctic Arrogance on a sloppy track at Aqueduct. He earned the best speed figure in the Davis field from that victory. It is worth noting that his maiden win was also at the Big A in the slop. (3) Classic Legacy comes from the red hot barn of Bill Mott after an impressive maiden win at Aqueduct. Classic Legacy actually comes from the same owner of Pegasus World Cup winner Art Collector. (11) Litigate will come with good odds for a Todd Pletcher runner that won his debut at Aqueduct and then was second behind Cyclone Mischief in an allowance at Gulfstream. Betting strategy: Exacta key box: 9 with 1, 3, 7, 11. Trifecta part-wheel: 7, 9 with 1, 2, 3, 7, 9, 10, 11 with 1, 2, 3, 7, 9, 10, 11.

10th race – (3) Arthur’s Ride was second in his two starts at Saratoga and seems poised to win in his comeback. (4) Justice Department could be a contender in his debut for Brown. Betting strategy: 3 to win, place. Exacta box: 3-4-7-8.

2nd race [NY, Clm 25000, 6F] – (8) First Deputy (B) got off to a slow start and rallied on a sloppy, speed favoring track and still finished third. (2) Quick Return (D) got bet down from 7-1 to 5-2 and then had to race wide on an inside favoring track after a slow start. (6) Double Shot has two wins at this NY-bred claiming level including last time when he made his first start for a new trainer. (1) Foolish Giant makes a big drop down in class into the claiming ranks and is projected to get loose on the lead.
3rd race [Jimmy Winkfield, 6F] – (4) Drew’s Gold won both of his races with a debut victory at Churchill Downs in May and then following an eight month layoff he recovered from a troubled start to win an allowance at Laurel Park by almost four lengths. He earned the highest speed figure in Winkfield from that victory. (3) Kool Kathmandu was a five-length winner of a maiden special weight in his second start on a sloppy track and was geared down approaching the wire. He is projected to be on the lead once again. (1) Joey Freshwater won his last two starts beginning with a clear victory in a maiden claimer at Churchill Downs where Linda Rice took him for $50,000. At Aqueduct, Joey Freshwater won a starter allowance with a stalking trip. (2) Daydreaming Boy ships up from Parx after facing very strong competition in a pair of stakes and a maiden race.
4th race [Alw 50000s, 6F] – (8) Mo Rewards (C) was bet down to be an even money favorite from 7-2 and finished third and was claimed for $25,000 by Linda Rice. (5) Ikigai was second in a similar starter allowance after setting the pace. (1) Tenebris / (1A) Joey Loose Lips are both contenders in this spot. (9) Upper Level gets blinkers on after a pair of third-place finishes at this level.
7th race [Clm 25000, 1 mi] – (10) Swift Tap (D) was bet down from 7-1 to 5-1 and drops from a starter allowance to a level at which he won two races ago when he was claimed by Michelle Nevin. (6) Leddy has been racing against much tougher competition since winning at the $25,000 level at Saratoga when he was claimed by Linda Rice. (9) American Rule returned from a six month layoff and finished fourth in a $40,000 claimer. (7) Sundaeswithsandy will also drop won to a claimer which was the last time that he won a race and that was four starts ago.
Best bets: Drew’s Gold (3rd); Swift Tap (7th). Best value: First Deputy (2nd); Mo Rewards (4th).

                            Feb. 10, 2023

Race 10 at Tampa Bay Downs | Saturday February 11 | Post Time 5:18 PM Eastern
Sam F. Davis Stakes – Grade 3 | Purse $250,000 | One Mile and One Sixteenth | Three Year Olds
                            Top Contenders:
Prairie Hawk (2) was well regarded at odds of three to one in his debut last October in a six furlong sprint but he faded to sixth of 10 after pressing the pace in second for the first half of the race. Stretched out to two-turns for his second career start in December, Prairie Hawk was a much different horse. Rallying and opening up by three lengths entering the stretch, he held the lead to the wire. Four weeks ago on January 13 and in his third career start, second around two turns and second at Tampa Bay Downs, Prairie Hawk took the lead from the start and was never threatened. His improving pattern of Equibase Speed Figures, from 67 to 84 and then to 91, suggest he will run another career-best effort today. Before leaving trainer Saffie Joseph Jr.’s base at Gulfstream Park, Prairie Hawk put in a strong half-mile workout (46.4) and once again gets the services of Tampa Bay Downs leading jockey Samy Camacho who rode the colt to his last two wins. As a son of Curlin there’s little doubt Prairie Hawk can contend in the big races for three year olds, particularly as his dam Princess Ash produced Quip, the winner of the 2018 Tampa Bay Derby.
Litigate (11) is another horse that ships in from Gulfstream Park, this one for Todd Pletcher. The colt won his sprint debut last November with a very strong 92 speed figure for a two year old, duplicating that effort almost two months later on January 8 when second in a highly rated allowance race. Winner Cyclone Mischief returned in the Holy Bull Stakes last weekend and ran poorly, but Litigate may take another step forward as he tries two-turns for the first time, getting the services of Luis Saez, and who also put in a strong half-mile workout (best of 31 on the day) in preparation for this race.
Groveland (5) must be considered a contender as he was only one length behind Prairie Hawk in that allowance race over the track last month. He has continued to improve since his debut, particularly since stretched out to two-turns for the first time in December, earning an 87 figure which he bettered to 89 last month. Jockey Centeno got familiar with him in that race and rides back, which is another good sign for a competitive effort.
Worthington (1) has figures as good as the top contenders in this race, particularly the 96 figure earned on November 26, one race before last. He won that race by two and one-half lengths under Saez, who chooses to ride Litigate in this race. All four career starts to date have been on turf, but the colt has breeding to run just as well on the dirt as the dam’s other two foals are winners in dirt routes and as he is by Classic Empire, winner of some big stakes races including the 2017 Arkansas Derby. A Race Lens query reveals trainer Mike Maker has a good record (18% wins) moving horses from turf to dirt for stakes, and the colt’s 90 and 96 last two figures stand up well with the other main contenders.
I am taking a stand against possible betting favorite Dubyuhnell (7), winner of the Remsen Stakes last December in his final start as a two year old. The reasons are many, but the most important are he is giving away physical condition to most of the rest of the field which ran last month, as well as the record of Remsen winners in their three year old debuts is not good. Only Mohayman, who won the 2016 Holy Bull Stakes in his three year old debut, succeeded in a similar situation, with 10 of the other 11 most recent Remsen winners having poor comebacks in their three year old debuts, with the possible exception of Catholic Boy, who was second in the 2018 Sam F. Davis Stakes.
                            Win bets:
I think Prairie Hawk (2) and Litigate (11) have about a 25% chance to win, which equates to 3 to 1 fair odds, so I will be either, or both, at 3 to 1 or higher odds near post time.
Also, given Groveland (5) opens at 12 to 1 and Worthington (1) opens at 20/1, at least token win bets may be warranted so as not to be kicking ourselves after the race. I think minimum odds for win bets on these two are about 6 to 1.
                            Exactas:
Box Prairie Hawk (2) and Litigate (11)
