Race 1: Sheng Shui Handicap

#12 Shenron gets his chance to try and make all. He steps away favourably from gate one with the apprentice aboard and under no weight he could prove hard to catch. #1 Diamond Soars mixes his form but does break favourably from an inside draw. His consistency holds him in good stead. #8 Tronic Mighty will need to offset the wide gate. He does get Zac Purton up which is a big plus. #6 Shanghai Power narrowly missed three runs ago. He’s in the right vein of form still.

Race 2: Fanling Handicap

#6 Baron Zee did well two runs back at Happy Valley. Expect he can return to that form and he’s done enough so far to suggest that he is capable of collecting a first win over this sort of trip. #1 Wonder Years should relish the dip in grade. He’s a course and distance winner who can conserve energy throughout from the draw. #5 Sky Gem is always a threat over this course and distance. Chances are they pull a mid-race move to get him home. Big watch. #4 Loyal Ambition is racing well and will be thereabouts.

Race 3: Tai Po Handicap

#2 Faribault was beaten by the gate last time out. He steps away from an ideal draw this time under Hugh Bowman. He can return to winning ways as he much prefers Happy Valley. #11 G One Excellent finally broke through for his first win last start. He slots in light but does have to overcome a return to Class 4. #7 Nicetobemet definitely has more ability than what his record so far shows. Strong booking of Zac Purton ensures his chance. #5 Atomic Energy is on the steady improve. He’s doing plenty right.

Race 4: Sai Kung Handicap (2nd Section)

#2 Ready Player One makes the dip to Class 4. He’s been competitive in the grade above and off his latest trial he looks ready to win. Gate two and the booking of Vincent Ho give him his chance. #7 Sunny Delight has consistency on his side and now the booking of Hugh Bowman too. He’s in the right vein of form to be winning here. #1 Samarkand steps down in grade. Expect he wins one soon as he’s shown he’s more than capable of doing so. He can lead and salute soon enough. #6 Kung Fu Tea has claims. Keep safe.

Race 5: Kwai Chung Handicap (1st Section)

#1 Super Vince was without luck last start. He had plenty more to give and here he gets his chance to show it. The drop down in grade is clearly ideal and this contests looks well within his grasp. #4 Sight Hero has been rather unlucky across his career. This is the right race for him and his pairing with Zac Purton is a decent push. #2 Star Ascension is closing in on a first win. Hugh Bowman’s booking signals intent. #3 Victory Scholars gets a handy 10lb claim with the apprentice up. Gate one could afford him a dream run.

Race 6: Sai Kung Handicap (1st Section)

#11 Gallant Hero roared into fifth place last time out at Sha Tin. He can take another step forward here with Matthew Poon up, especially as he will once again carry a featherweight impost. #5 Proud Dragon’s first win looks just around the corner. Karis Teetan’s riding style should suit this regularly fast-closer. #7 Eighteen Palms did well to finish third on debut. He looks to have his fair share of ability. #1 World Famous is performing better than his record suggests. Don’t discount.

Race 7: The Rotary Centenary Challenge Cup Handicap (2nd Section)

#7 A Americ Te Specso is nearing a first win. Hugh Bowman gets aboard an in-form horse here and the inside draw suggests he will be hard to beat. #2 Righteous Arion is chasing back-to-back wins. He had plenty up his sleeve when winning last start and he gets another opportunity in Class 4. #1 Rattan Kingdom is consistent and also has the chance to win again in this grade. #4 Brilliant Life’s best and worst is few and far between but with a few favours he looks capable. Keep safe.

Race 8: Tsing Yi Handicap

#7 Solid Impact is unlucky not to already be a winner. He’s currently found his mark and his pairing with Zac Purton from gate three gives him one of his best opportunities yet to get on the board. #1 California Cible lost his last win on protest after he shifting out. He’s shown he’s in form and it wouldn’t surprise to see him atone for that effort here. #8 Science Patch is reliable and the run of the race looks like it could be his if he wants it. #11 Savvy Chic has a bit of class. He wouldn’t surprise.

Race 9: Tsuen Wan Handicap

#9 Gift Of Lifeline can save ground from the draw. He’s found his mark and this contest appears suitable for him to collect a third course and distance win. #10 Master Tornado has ability. He’s done everything right so far and the inside draw should see him find the front with ease. #8 Jumbo Legend never fails to disappoint. He’s holding his form well since stringing a pair of wins together earlier this season. #6 Happy Daily just needs to offset the draw. Don’t discount.

Metropolitan racing heads to Royal Randwick Racecourse on Wednesday afternoon for a competitive seven-race program on the Kensington track. The rail has moved out +5m the entire circuit for the meeting and the track is currently rated in the good range for race-day. We should be playing on a relatively fair surface on Wednesday with the rail out. The first race is set to get underway at 2:20pm AEDT.
Best Bet: Journalism

Journalism has been terrific since returning with a win on January 18 at Wyong and has continued to be consistent since that effort. This four-year-old gelding was unfortunate not to be making it back-to-back wins, running second behind Mystic Mermaid over the 1580m at Canterbury. He decided to sit outside the leader on that occasion and hit the line well, just getting run over late to go down a half-length on the winning post. Brett Prebble takes the reins this time and from barrier three should see this son of I Am Invincible ping the lids and take up the running if he wants it; however, if they over do it up front he can easily take a sit in behind the speed as he did first-up. The 1550m here on the Kensington looks a perfect setup and we’re happy to be with him.

We’re giving one last chance to Hollywood Hero to break his maiden status on Wednesday afternoon and should be right in the finish on the Kensington surface. His second up performance at Canterbury on February 1 had plenty of merit despite starting a short-priced favourite with online Bookmakers. He drew wide and cut across to sit outside the lead on a solid tempo and gave favourite backers a great sight turning in; however, if proved too much for this three-year-old colt who just faded late. He steps up to the 1400m for the first time and James McDonald sticks, so that gives us a good indication he thinks this Sacred Falls colt will appreciate the extra distance as well. They don’t need to lead in this contest, but we’ll leave it up to J-Mac to sort out the tempo and manage the task from there.

Next Best Again: Lascars

Lascars returns from a 15-week spell and has been trialling the house down coming into this first-up assignment on the Kensington. You only have to look at the first of his two jump outs to see why we’re with him on Wednesday as he travelled up behind Eskimo Prince Stakes winner Aft Cabin with ease to run into second in the Godolphin-dominated trial on January 16. He then had another jump out on the synthetic course at Warwick Farm hard held throughout, winning the trial to boot. He runs into a quality field here though to be fair, with plenty of chances across the board with horse like Headwall, Fumiko and Allusionist all having claims as well. Barrier three just looks perfect though for Lascars here with James McDonald having the choice to lead or get the leaders back. If he does, the only question mark is fitness, but with those two phenomenal trials under his belt, we think he’s the one to beat.

Racing returns to the Sandown Hillside track this Wednesday for what promises to be a competitive twilight meeting. The track is currently a Good 4, and with no rain and warm weather on the forecast, we expect that rating to stick for most of race day. The rail will go out to the +13m position for the entire circuit after racing on this track on Saturday, which may prove to play favourable to on-speed runners. The first of eight races will jump at 3:40pm AEDT.
Best Bet at Sandown: Greece

The third race of the day will see the exciting three-year-old filly from the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace yard return to the races for her autumn campaign. Greece was very good in her second career preparation, recording a dominant victory at Geelong to break her maiden and then when a long odds-on favourite at Cranbourne she didn’t receive a lot of luck and finished second, before going out for a spell. In preparation for this first-up run on Wednesday, this daughter of I Am Invincible had a very easy jump-out at Cranbourne, where the jockey had a strong hold on her for the entirety of the 800m event. The Maher & Eustace team have made it very clear that they won’t race this filly if the track is anywhere near the Soft range, so with no rain expected and the track expected to be dry, we should see this girl return and be at her very best. Jamie Kah will partner this filly again after being the only successful rider on her to date, and from barrier three we expect Kah to take her to the lead and prove very hard to beat.

Next Best at Sandown: Skywriter

We won’t have to wait long for another of our best bets at Sandown, with the Chris Waller-trained Skywriter going to the races for the second time in her career, after finishing second on debut at Moe over 1214m on January 24. This three-year-old filly was very good in the final 100m of her debut run once she got into clear air and was able to chase down the eventual winner, taking a good length off Skepticism. If the runs were reversed there is no doubt in our mind that this filly would have won the race. This daughter of Written Tycoon was able to settle at the rear of the field, with just one runner behind her, before weaving a passage between tiring horses on the home turn. From barrier eight on Wednesday, we should see Craig Williams drop her back to the rear of the field again, however, with the big spaces of the Hillside track, we should see her come down the outside and be in clear air for the entire length of the straight. If this filly gets even luck and doesn’t get held up in the final 300m, she should be winning.

Best Value at Sandown: Cradle Of Life

The first leg of the quaddie is where we will see the Richard Laming-trained Cradle Of Life go to the races for the third time in his career after finishing second in a Pakenham Class 1 Handicap over 1400m on January 25. This three-year-old colt has finished in the top three at both of his career starts, with his last start fast finishing third off a slow speed, being the better of his starts even though he won on debut. This son of Written Tycoon settled last at his most recent start, where the leaders set the race up for themselves by running the race at such a slow tempo, but this colt was enormous making up at six lengths in the final 200m on the leading duo. If the leaders can set a solid tempo on Wednesday and give this guy a fair chance to run home from the back, we should see him rattling home from the back to stake his claim in the concluding stages of the 1300m event.

We’re back at Happy Valley Racecourse on Wednesday night for a competitive nine-race program out of Hong Kong. We’re racing on the C Course, and we expect this will mean gallopers up on the speed will see some advantage throughout proceedings. With that being said, we should have picture-perfect conditions and a Good to Firm surface for Wednesday night. The first race is set to get underway at 6:45pm HKT (9:45pm AEDT).
Best Bet: Star Ascension

Star Ascension looks ready to break throughout for the David Hall yard and that’s exactly what we think can happen on Wednesday night. The four-year-old gelding makes his first appearance at the city circuit after some eye-catching efforts at Sha Tin – particularly his latest run behind Happy For All. He was beaten just less than two-lengths and found trouble when trying to get clear at the 300m marker, but was able to produce a nice finally to find fourth. There’s no one riding the Happy Valley circuit better than Hugh Bowman at the moment and from a nice draw should be no worse than three pairs back this time. There should be a good enough tempo for Star Ascension to sprint off as well, with pacemakers Infinite Power and Victory Scholars like to challenge each other for the lead. If Star Ascension can handle the tight turning track, he looks the one to beat.

The second leg of the quaddie presents a tricky race to dissect, but we’re happy to be siding with Rattan Kingdom for a flying Jamie Richards yard. This combination saw the winners enclosure on Sunday at Sha Tin with Laser Victory an impressive debutant and we think the trainer-jockey can reunite on this five-year-old gelding. After back-to-back wins for the son of Per Incanto, he had his winning streak taken away by Sugar Sugar who went on to run well in Class 4. In that loss he got caught up on the inside and bumped between gallopers before peaking on his effort. You can argue the ratings has caught up with this guy; however, we think it was a forgivable effort and this time, we’d like to see jockey Zac Purton keep him out of trouble. His best performances this preparation have been when ridden wider turning for home, so from barrier six we think Purton can search for the one-by-one, then when asked kick away from his rivals here. It’s a tough ask with the top weight, but we think he can handle the task.

Eighteen Palms was good on debut and should take plenty of improvement in this second-up assignment. He got the perfect run on that occasion when find the one-off one-back position throughout and fitness took it’s toll late. It’s always tough to be first-up over the 1650m and when Legion Of Merit made a mid-race move, it spelled the end for the chances of this four-year-old out of El Roca. He just couldn’t chase but finished into a comfortable third less than a length off the winner, so with another soft barrier on Wednesday, we think this Danny Shum-trained gelding can take advantage. Zac Purton sticks after taking the reins first-up and with race experience being a massive factor we can see Eighteen Palms being ultra-competitive in a moderate Class 4 contest.

Star Contact was a classy winner last time out and can find back-to-back wins in a very strong finale on the Happy Valley program. Zac Purton gave this David Hayes-trained gelding a peach from back in the field to storm over the top of his Class 4 rivals. He beat home Flying Silver who was at the rock bottom of the weights and proceeded to demoralise a Class 5 field last Wednesday. That might not be the most flattering view of this Star Turn four-year-old; however, with that dominant win out of the way he now drops 5kg going up into Class 3 and we think he can put it together again. Karis Teetan takes the reins this time and with horses like – Gallant Waking, Nimble Nimbus, Master Tornado and Jumbo Legend – all to have admirers, we think you’ll be getting a respectable price for Star Contact with online Bookmakers. Karis Teetan hops aboard here and will be likely to be back half of the field, but with any luck he’ll be charging at them late again.

Turfway Park - Race #2
Picks Notes
#1 Frady He has given away ground late in every start of his career, but he has never been in this easy and isn't meeting a ton of confirmed forward players. Think he has a real chance to land this from right up near the top.
#2 Net Worth Dropper went evenly at first asking, and they didn't have really high expectations for this one when debuting him for $30,000. Think he has a right to be tough with this easier group, but I figure he's going to be overbet.
#12 Wiseacre He didn't show much of anything in the first start against special weight foes, but he's immediately down in class in a big way for this one, and it wouldn't be a surprise to see him handle these.
Race Summary Frady cuts the tag in half for this one while meeting some other droppers who might get bet out of bigger-name barns, and he has some interesting pace from the inside.

Turfway Park - Race #5
Picks Notes
#12 Pideme Otra She showed brief tracking pace before giving way badly, but she's going to return with Lasix for this second start while shedding blinkers. She's a bit of a reach, but the price should be right this time around after she took a bit of cash in that first run. Expecting better.
#10 Who Runs the World She'll go first out for a formidable Cox barn with these kinds, but the price isn't likely to be all that attractive with the obvious top connections.
#13 I Had That One Too She finished up with a bit of energy in the debut try and might be able to build on that effort here at second asking. Wouldn't be shocked to see her come alive late for a piece of this.
Race Summary #7 Upper Case is another player in here while returning for a top barn after debuting at Saratoga, but I think the price on Pideme Otra should be appealing enough to give her a chance to take a step forward today.

Turfway Park - Race #7
Picks Notes
#3 Naked on the Beach She's back off the bench with a good run over the surface to her credit from last year, and her baseline effort probably makes her tough here if she's ready to go off the layoff. Perfect tactical trip should be there for her.
#5 Wicked Intent Think she has a little bit of underneath appeal at what should be a nice price after that dull run last time out, but she rallied well with similar two starts back and might be able to get past enough of these to boost the gimmicks late. Consider.
#12 Batyah She'll have to work out a trip from a wide draw, but she has been in with some better groups and is finally stringing a few races together for the first time in her career. Capable.
Race Summary Naked on the Beach will need to fire fresh in a pretty competitive spot, but I think she can be tough from a perfect spying spot if she's fit enough to see this out off the bench. Wicked Intent will be scattered around my intra-race tickets in hopes she can pick up a piece of this or more at a big number.

#1 IONNA (3-1) Broke maiden for $25k two back, stopped in repeat try as the favorite.
Race Summary PEACH BE WITH Q drops from the allowance ranks, gets Lasix and blinkers and draws a favorable post to work out a perfect stalking trip. She changes riders for her first start this season. Bet to win and place and play a 1-6-8 exacta box.
