Race 6: Allowance

#2 Oh Darlin has hit the board in all four of her races over the synthetic surface. She has been competitive at this level as well. #4 Hoax looks to rebound after a poor effort over this track in her last start. Her previous races are clearly good enough to win in this spot today.

Race 7: Starter Optional Claiming

#4 Journeytothemoon has finished first of second in seven straight races since moving over to the synthetic surface. She looks to be the one they’ll all have to hold off down the stretch. #5 Social Engagement moves over to the synthetic surface after a few solid races over the turf. She will be of the pace setters in this spot.

Race 8: Allowance

#4 Roll on Big Joe comes into this race off of a nice maiden victory last time out over this track by a wide-margin. He can make it two in a row today with a repeat effort. #8 Rudder’s Men was highly thought of last time out; however, he did no running at all. Hopefully he can bounce back from a poor effort this time around.

Race 9: Maiden Optional Claiming

#3 Not Even Then was a solid fifth last time out in her debut race. She should improve nicely off of that effort today. #6 Literate was solid on debut; however, did not show up with much of an effort last time out. If she rebounds today she will have a shot to get the job done.

1st race – (9) Good Value is a firster from Brown who looks best in this spot. (5) Naa Dudette has late kick and should benefit from some added distance. (3) R Rose’ All Day missed by a nose last time and should be a main factor here. (7) Leipzig may perk up in a claimer. Betting strategy: 9 to win, place. Exacta box: 3-5-7-9.

4th race – (5) Aunt Nadine was second in her last two starts and seems overdue for a win here. (7) Drinks On Me tired last time but could hang on in this field. (3) Danger returns to Tapeta and cannot be overlooked. (6) Dancing Doll had some trouble last time and should improve off the Noda claim. Betting strategy: 5 to win, place. Exacta box: 3-5-6-7. 7th race – (6) Jazzy T won two of her last three starts and can add one more victory here. (4) Journeytothemoon was second to the top pick last time and should be the main rival once again. (2) Mosler’s Image should be well-suited by a switch to Tapeta. (5) Social Engagement could be tough to catch here. Betting strategy: 6 to win, place. Exacta box: 4-6. Kembla Grange will play host to a competitive eight-race program on Thursday afternoon, including the first leg of the Provincial-Midway Championship Qualifiers. Worth $150,000 in prizemoney, the top two placegetters in every qualifier will earn a spot in the $500,000 finale on April 8 at Royal Randwick.

Outside of that there’s still plenty of quality racing to sink our teeth into, as the rail sits in the true position the entire circuit. The track is currently listed in the Good 4 range, although with rain around the Illawarra region heading into Thursday, we may be in for a downgrade. The first race is set to get underway at 1:15pm AEDT.
Provincial-Midway Qualifier: Mobstar

We’ve found a bit of each-way value in the first leg of the Provincial-Midway qualifiers on Thursday afternoon with Mobstar our on top pick. After winning first-up at Wyong on December 14, Mobstar headed up to the Gold Coast for some Magic Millions races; he was beaten 1.8 lengths by Spiritualised and after that suffered a 4.6-length defeat to Centrefire. Both were even efforts, but coming back down to NSW and finding what we think is an easier task on paper, we can see the best version of Mobstar on Thursday afternoon. His tick-over trial at Newcastle was just what followers would want to see, hitting the line strongly from the back of the field. Dylan Gibbons took the reins for the first time in that barrier trial, and of the three Kris Lees runners assembled here, Gibbons has elected to take Mobstar. He should be somewhere in the middle of the pack turning for home and, with some luck getting clear, will be right in the finish.

Best Bet: Copper Moon

Copper Moon was impressive on debut despite a small field at Kembla Grange on January 31. He sat outside the leader throughout the 1000m contest and kicked away from his key rival Artieos to score a 1.3-length victory. It was on a heavy surface as well, so if conditions do deteriorate on Thursday, it shouldn’t be a problem for this son of Super One. Copper Moon does get a 4kg penalty for the win, meaning Artieos meets us 3.5kg better for that first-up run; however, we feel there’s more upside for Copper Moon and he was only going away from them when hitting the line. Jeff Penza takes the ride again for trainer Kerry Parker and from barrier two gets to stalk the leaders everywhere before powering past them all again. He has to lug the top weight and maybe he wants to step up in trip already, but we’ll take Copper Moon on trust that he should only be improving here.

We’ve got a keen eye on the debut of a few first-starters on Thursday afternoon, especially High Plateau for Godolphin and James Cummings. This now four-year-old has had plenty of time to develop at the barrier trials and has been impressive on what we’ve witnessed. He’s been versatile in his trial performances, going forward and getting back to run home, so barrier eight is of no concern heading into this first-up assignment. Brad Rawiller takes on the challenge and will be set the task of finding cover throughout this 1000m maiden. If he does, we could see a very strong debut by this son of Lonhro.

The night racing season at Pakenham Racecourse continues this Thursday night with a competitive eight-race program set down for decision. The forecast suggests perfect conditions for racing, while the track has come up a Good 4 and the rail comes out 9m the entire circuit. Racing gets underway at 5:45pm AEDT.
Best Bet at Pakenham: Hughes

Our best bet comes up in the opening leg of the quaddie when the Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr-trained Hughes looks to right the wrongs from his last start. The three-year-old gelding was the definition of a tough watch at this track and trip on February 9, where he simply saw more traffic than peak hour in Sydney. He had been lobbed in a perfect position for Patrick Moloney on the leaders’ heels, but once the runs came out wide and the leaders stopped, Hughes was simply all dressed up with nowhere to go. He gains the services of Blake Shinn, which is a massive plus and from barrier four, we’re hopeful he does not run into any traffic issues this time round. Hughes’ debut win at Wangaratta showed he has plenty of ability and if he brings that type of performance on Thursday, good luck beating him.

Next Best at Pakenham: Farhh Flung

The Danny O’Brien-trained Farhh Flung is another who gains the services of Blake Shinn and we’re expecting that to be beneficial once again. This son of Farhh managed to finish fourth at the Pakenham 1600m and as he returns to the track and trip this week, he is sure to take some beating. His only career victory came when third-up at the mile and we’re hopeful that it is the tonic for success once again. Look for Shinn to have the four-year-old settled midfield with cover and on the back of a genuine tempo, there is no reason why Farhh Flung cannot loop the field and dispose of his rivals with relative ease.

Best Value at Pakenham: Firestorm Boy

We will be looking to kick off the night with some value when the Greg Eurell-trained Firestorm Boy looks to break his maiden at start three. Despite being held up for a run in a stronger maiden last time out, the three-year-old gelding was somewhat disappointing at this track and trip, but his debut run the start prior suggest a maiden win was not too far away. Despite the low draw of barrier two, look for Blaike McDougall to have this son of Danerich settle close to the rear of the field and with the aid of the chute being in play, Firestorm Boy will have plenty of time to build through his gear and hopefully blouse the leaders. The $8.50 on offer with online Bookmakers looks a fair price to find out if Firestorm Boy can break his maiden.

#7 Duel Fuel Play of the day for me here after he stepped up with a really good effort against similar last time out, and he had to idle just a bit behind horses coming for home that day -- wonder if he can launch a rally and sustain it without interruption today.
#3 English Challenge He's a pretty reliable type against this kind, and he just handled some of these in that most recent score, including the top choice. Obvious threat right back, but think there will be more appealing options.
#10 The Boss Factor He turned in a good first effort off the claim, and he's probably right up on the splits while getting back around two turns here. Might land a perfect, first-jump trip.
Race Summary Duel Fuel ran a good one last time out at a price and should offer a mid-range number here, and a cleaner trip might be all he needs to be in the frame again tonight.

#3 Best Performer Fair Grounds shipper exits a pretty good try when getting back on the grass, and I'm guessing she's here to try synthetic footing today for lack of consistent turf options in New Orleans right now. Might like it here.
#11 Opening Act She's a big threat off the sharp sprint debut run, and she should be fast enough to find a good spot into the first turn with this bunch. Logical one to beat in the finale.
Race Summary Spring Lilacs has room to come forward in this second career start, as she left herself way too much to do in that first start. The winner that day put more than six of those nine beaten lengths on her, and I wouldn't be surprised to see a lot better tonight.
