Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Early Pick 4 Analysis

Yonkers Raceway has an 11-race card on tap to begin the week. The $1.00 Early Pick 4 kicks off the action, and it will be my focus. The 0.50 Pick 5 starts in Race 5. Due to a $6,576.53 carryover from Friday night the sequence will have a $20,000 guaranteed pool.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 1

3-Long Weekend A (3-1)-Stratton gave this 7-year-old a more conservative steer last time. Maybe that was his best chance of winning but couldn't shake loose until late. The one below was too good on 2-20, but now a pocket ride behind #4 could be in the cards and the finish could be reversed.
4-Ballerat Boomerang (2-1)-The Engblom barn has posted 32% winners over the past 30 days and last week this 10-year-old was all business. Took command early, didn't look back and is a major threat to follow that plan to the winner's circle again.

Race 2

6-Splash Brother (4-1)-Faced better last week from the 8-hole in a no move mile. Drops, and this should be a comfortable level in the 2nd start since 11-1. Buter could get on the point and wire this field. The Schnittker stable has been cold, but the 6-year-old does good work at YR (40-9-11-3).
7-Rock Candy (9/2)-This is another that stayed on the rail last time and the Medeiros barn is 0-22 the last 30 days, but Gingras sticks. Drops to the same level of a very close 2nd place finish on 1-31 and will look for a big try tonight.

Race 3

3-Pyro (3-1)-This veteran woke up in a big way last week. Got on the engine from post 6 and crushed this kind by >6 lengths in 151.0. Dube should be out and rolling and best to respect the same outcome.
5-Pretty Handsome (5/2)-Took a picture at this class on 1-31, got on the point early on from post 1 and hung on for a picture. Could get a close-up seat and Gingras should have this veteran in striking range around the last turn.
6-Southwind Sandor (5-1)-Steps up after a game 1st over try into a quick 2nd half of 55.2 to miss by only a half-length. Bartlett sticks, should offer a square price, and the Cullipher barn is starting to heat up.

Race 4

2-Marlbank Road (12-1)-Going to fade the program chalks 1 & 5 and this Stafford trainee drops to a competitive level. Versatile 5-year-old gives Holland some options and he chose over the #6. This barn has been doing well posting 24% winners over the last 30 days.
4-General Montana N (12-1)-This will be 3rd start on Lasix, comes back in sequence and Joe B steers taking over for Siegelman. Will swing for a price and hope the Jenn B barn starts rolling. Has the gate speed to be forwardly placed and there aren't any standouts in this field.
6-Quality Bud (5-1)-Gingras takes over for Holland and will look for an aggressive steer. Not saying this veteran would have won last week but looked loaded with pace and was jammed up down the lane. Should be a fair price, Gingras could blast out and hope for the best.

TOIL AND TROUBLE - I usually like playing sprinters who are 3-4 races into a comeback. Came home in speedy time in the last race. A positive sign. A VIEW FROM ABOVE - I like that recent outing on February 7th at Turf Paradise where he finished third. This mount could be tough today, especially since Marti rode last time out and now should be better acquainted with this one. Gelding is a few starts into a comeback here. Should give a top effort today. Just see his recent speed fig, 82. That one looks good in this field. TRUMPED - On February 6th this gelding shipped in to take the top prize and looks good right back. I like the case that this gelding's last fig, 82, is tops in this field.

PHOENICIAN GHOST - No good fortune for this mount in a short distance contest over the last sixty days tells me that this gelding is in a difficult situation This gelding recorded a speed rating in his last clash which likely isn't good enough in today's event. ABRAAJ MIRAGE - Last performed on February 7th at Turf Paradise, finishing fifth. Unlikely to move up off of that outing in today's event. Not likely that the speed rating he notched on February 7th will be enough in this clash.

This gelding should be given a shot just off the earnings per start in dirt sprint races alone. YOU ARE AWESOME - Solid average speed figures in dirt sprint races make this equine a key contender. This trainer has the strongest ROI in this field with entries racing at this distance and surface. HOLY SAINT - Shows signs of the look of a money-making play, averaging a solid 74 Equibase speed fig which is one of the most respectable in this field. Has been running in the most competitive company of the group of animals lately.

HIGH VELOCITY - This thoroughbred coming off a solid race in the last month or so is a solid contender in my opinion. He has the highest earnings per race. Take a good look at this horse. RUDY ROD - The rider and conditioner combination have a profitable ROI when they join forces. 64-81-85 are last three speed ratings. Improving each time out is something he should do again right here in this race. GOLDEN SPOKE - He keeps getting closer at the finish with each and every start. This gelding is in exceptional physical condition right now. Ran first last time around the track and comes back soon. This horse has increased his speed ratings from a fig of 51 to 72 to 79 in succession.

Vulnerable Contenders: #9 GENGHIS (ML=4/1), #4 STREET TAIL (ML=9/2), #7 SHACKLE CAT (ML=6/1),

GENGHIS - Hasn't been on the Parx Racing oval in the last three weeks. Cause for some concern. This gelding ran his top Equibase speed figure in some time on the dirt in a sprint race. There may be a bounce today. STREET TAIL - If he hasn't found the winning character by now, it will be tough for him to get it today. The pace configuration just isn't too promising for this speedy one. Many other horses would have to scratch to promote his dreams at winning. SHACKLE CAT - He's most likely going to get roasted on the top end. Not probable that the speed fig he registered on November 28th will be good enough in this clash.

My “Cutting Room Floor” plays are the situations I considered the closest to being worthy of investment but did not make the “final cut” for my official plays today for subscribers. The last play I cut for Monday is with the Florida State Seminoles plus the points versus the North Carolina Tar Heels. Florida State (9-20) snapped a four-game losing streak with an 85-84 upset win at Miami (FL) as a 13-point underdog on Saturday. The Seminoles have covered the point spread in 10 of their last 11 home games when playing for just the second time in eight days. They have also covered the point spread in 5 of their last 6 home games against teams with a losing record on the road. North Carolina (18-11) has won two games in a row after a 71-63 win against Virginia as a 4-point favorite on Saturday. But the Tar Heels have failed to cover the point spread in 5 of their last 7 games after a straight-up win. They have also failed to cover the point spread in 5 straight games on the road.
