1st race – (5) Alhaan did not care for Tapeta but has a great pedigree for turf and may wake up in this spot. (7) Run for Cover gets back on turf and should be a main threat at this level. (9) Breton Girl may respond to a big drop in class. (10) Sing Scat was a troubled second last time but has a tough post. Betting strategy: 5 to win, place. Exacta box: 5-7-9-10.
4th race – (5) Crispy Cat makes his U.S. debut after some good efforts in European group stakes. Seems to have a class edge here. (1) Ship the Goods was third in his first try on turf and can move forward from the rail. (6) Undalay showed speed last time out and may be hard to catch in this field. (3) Takecareofbusiness could get a nice set-up here. Betting strategy: 5 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-5. Exactas: 1-5 over 3-6 and 3-6 over 1-5.
7th race – (3) Three Witches (A) was a clear second last time and figures to cast a spell on her rivals here. (6) Signal From Noise was second last time and shapes up as the one to fear. (7) Inventing was second as a big favorite and cannot be ignored. (4) Charge Account was hurt by a wide trip and can be more of a factor today. Betting strategy: 3 to win, place. Exacta box: 3-6. Exactas 3-6 over 4-7 and 4-7 over 3-6. Doubles: 3-4-6-7 with 2-3-6-10. Pick 3: 3-4-6-7 with 2-3-6-10 with 4-5-6-7.
8th race – (2) Dr Zempf makes his U.S. debut for Brown, who has been doing well at this meet with his imports. Deserves top billing here. (6) Slipstream won a graded stakes at 2 but is unraced since June. Should be a factor if there’s no rust. (10) First Empire looks like the pacesetter here and could be hard to reel in. 9th race – (7) Red Hurricane (B) was a game second last time at this level and should prevail off the Sano claim. (6) The Sleepychipmunk could be a contender off a nice maiden win. Forecast: Purified just missed by a neck in a maiden special weight main track miler in late December but after 10 weeks on the sidelines he returns in a maiden $50,000 claimer for trainer Bob Baffert. That’s not a very healthy pattern for a lightly raced ridgeling that has finished in the money in all four career starts and originally brought $385,000 in a 2-year-old in training sale. Clearly, the now 4-year-old son of Lord Nelson is being culled by the stable, which doesn’t mean he can’t (or won’t) win this race, only that his connections do not view him as a long term prospect. First-off-the-claim Famous Star is re-equipped with blinkers and has numbers that are good enough to win at this level, but to be frank he’s never shown a whole lot of fight when put to pressure in the final furlong. The son of Frosted projects to be part of the early pace, and if he can sneak away early he might get brave late.

Forecast: We’ll double the second race, an allowance optional claimer for state-bred older horses over a mile on the main track. Talklessworkmore shows the blinkers off angle that we like and good, consistent form at this level. The Shelby Ruis-trained gelding has finished in the money in each of his last six starts, most recently when second with a career top speed figure over this track and distance last month. Flavian Prat stays aboard and should have the son of Summer Front in a good stalking position throughout. Lil Richards Bello isn’t as fast on speed figures as our top pick but has been freshened since November and has trained well enough to be fit and ready for his return. He’s run well over this main track in the past and has enough early speed to clear the field if that’s the strategy his connections wish to employ.

Forecast: Bell Renella, quite obviously is a standout in this $10,000 claiming sprint for older fillies and mares. All she needs to be is reasonably fit and close to the form she displayed last year when she was stopped on after a three race winning streak that concluded in the spring after she was twice a voided claim due to vet issues. The main question – in fact, the only question – is what kind of shape she is in following a nearly one year layoff. The work tab is impressive, and since she’s waiver protected and therefore can’t be claimed, her connections get a free ride. There’s no wagering value to be found at the very short price she is sure to be, but we can use her as a free bingo space in rolling exotic play.

RACE 4: Post: 2:00 PT Grade: B-

Forecast: Here’s a very competitive nine furlong turf event for entry-level allowance fillies and mares that offers several possibilities. There should be enough speed to compliment the late running style of Big Mama Sue, so we’ll put the veteran mare on top and hope that the race shape plays in her favor. A two time winner over the Santa Anita turf course, the daughter of Mr. Big has been freshened since November and shows just four works in the interim, but she has a history of firing fresh and probably doesn’t need to be honed on in the morning to be on her game. The Paul Aguirre-trained mare retains “win” rider Juan Hernandez and should be capable of wearing down the leaders in the closing stages. Eleuthera adds blinkers – she’s worn them once before unsuccessfully – and is solid on numbers but has failed twice in her last three outings as the favorite. At this stage, we’re not sure if she wants to be a speed horse or a closer and it looks like her connections haven’t quite figured it out, either. Nonetheless, off her best effort, she has a reasonable look. Tecumseh Caroline is unproven on grass and at this distance, but she appears to be made of the proper stuff, having won her last pair in good style, one sprinting, one routing, and both on dirt. She’s very likely to be part of the pace, though she can settle in mid-pack and win from there if the race flow dictates.

RACE 5: Post: 2:30 PT Grade: C
Main ticket (in order of preference): Trojan Way; 1-Bonita Leona
Backups/savers: none

Forecast: There are six runners in this restricted (nw-3) $20,000 claiming main track miler for older fillies and mares, two of which should be capable of leaving the others behind. Trojan Way, claimed in her last pair, most recently out of a winning race for (nw-2) $12,500, moves up in class but has numbers that make her the one to beat in this modest affair. The concern is that she’s most effective on the front end, but from where she’s drawn (six of six) the daughter of Kantharos may have to be sent from the bell to get over and earn her coveted trip. That may be a bit more difficult than what is ideal thanks to the presence of Bonita Leona, who exits a series of sprints, and seems likely to be sent from start to take advantage of her inside draw. It’s possible these two hook up early and do each other in, but whom among the other four have shown the ability to produce any kind of rally? In a race that we’ll otherwise leave alone, we’ll go two-deep in rolling exotic play with a slight preference on top to Trojan Way.

Forecast: This is a stronger than par maiden turf miler for sophomores and it should take quite a decent filly to win it. Window Shopping was flat out given a race in her debut last fall at Del Mar, eventually winding up sixth (beaten just over fourth lengths) after encountering some traffic through the lane while never being asked for anything close to her best (she galloped out far in front into the clubhouse turn but they don’t pay off for that). The daughter of American Pharaoh certainly has much more natural talent that the line will show, and her recent impressive dirt workouts leave no doubt that she is plenty fit and ready for a stable that has good stats with the layoff angle. Additionally, she gets Lasix and Flavian Prat. While we prefer to see two sprints prior to a stretch out, Make It Snow ran so well in her debut at six furlongs that we expect her to provide our top pick with some legitimate competition. The daughter of Empire Maker rallied wide and closed with courage in a hot race while just getting her feet wet, and though the barn has weak stats with the second-time starter angle this filly might prove to be an exception to the rule. As a daughter of Empire Maker, she certainly is bred to improve with distance. These are the two we’ll be including on our rolling exotic ticket with preference in the win pool to Window Shopping.

Forecast: Street Ruckus may not be the type of horse to take a real short price on – he’s been a beaten favorite in his last two starts – but it’s hard to envision him getting beat in this below average allowance main track miler for older horses. He always seems to try hard, having finished in the money in each of his last six starts, but it’s been almost a year since he’s won, and that victory was accomplished on grass. In a race that lacks pace, the son of Street Boss might inherit the role as the controlling speed and given that type of trip he should be able to dominate as a no-value rolling exotic single.

Forecast: The finale is state-bred maiden $50,000 claiming sprint for 3-year-olds in which the second time starter Soul of Midnight should be a logical top pick. The son of Straight Fire tipped his hand when a good second in his debut at this level earlier this meeting, and with a healthy, steady series of works in the interim the Dean Pederson-trained gelding seems very likely to step forward for a barn whose maidens always seem to improve with an outing under their belt. Big Drinker, first off the claim for Peter Miller, turned in a clunker at this level as the favorite but didn’t get the best of runs and seems certain to snap back to his best race for his new connections. His recent work tab at San Luis Rey Downs looks fine, and with the break in the weights afforded by good bug boy Aguilar this son of Stay Thirsty seems like the one to fear most. Preference on top goes to Soul of Midnight but we’ll have tickets using both in our rolling exotics.

Frank Carulli: Laurel Park Pick 4 Analysis | Friday, March 10

Laurel Park’s popular 50-cent Late Pick 4 averages 9 starters per race, spanning four distances this Friday. Solve it and you should be rewarded with a good payout. Here’s a closer look at the races with a suggested $12 ticket:

LRL 6th race (2:52 EST) -- NAVAL EMPIRE stumbled at the start and ‘churned on’ to finish third in a key 6F allowance sprint last out. Tappin Josie (5-10, $200k), the race winner, came back to win the $75,000 Society Hill Stakes at Parx, and Liquidator (4-10, $125k) won an allowance sprint at Laurel. That makes the daughter of multiple Grade I-winning sire Empire Maker and stakes-winning dam In The Navy Now a must play at 8-1 on the morning line in her first route attempt. BALPOOL arrives from Aqueduct after she out-dueled the 4-to-5 favorite to break her maiden at one mile despite drifting late. MISS FUSSY PANTS won her only two starts beyond 6F by a combined 12 lengths, now enters a high-percentage claim barn for her first start at one mile.

LRL 7th race (3:21 EST) -- RUTHANNE checks all the boxes to win at first asking. She worked two bullets for a 30-percent debut barn, her sire Uncle Mo ranks second in progeny earnings in 2023, and her dam was a multiple stakes-placed sprinter. DIAL FOR LOVE, by first-out winner and 2011 Florida Derby (G-1) champ Dialed In, also gets a spot on the ticket for a 27-percent barn with MSW runners.

LRL 8th race (3:52 EST) -- Trainer Anthony Farrior has two chances to try and enhance his 204-for-894 record with claims in the past year. TATE, first or second in 9 of 12 starts at Laurel Park, comes off a game win for a $25,000 tag but must improve off his prior allowance starts. ORO DE MORO MORO romped in his first start for the barn at one mile in November and is worth a 10-1 price stab off the re-claim today. Trainer Jamie Ness sends out a solid entry with JARDANI, who rallied from far back to finish second in a longer allowance race, and UNDER THE RADAR, who upstaged a series of third-place finishes with a pair of recent photo-finish victories. MAXIMUS MIDANI is working forwardly for his return from a 10-month layoff and he is reunited with jockey Forest Boyce, who coaxed three wins and two near misses from the 6-year-old during an $88k season last year, mostly in state-bred allowance company.

LRL 9th race (4:23 EST) -- REAL RAMBO was in range of the favorites entering the far turn at 1-1/8 miles but couldn’t keep pace before he was bumped around in early stretch. The top two finishers combined for three seconds and a third with an average 59 Beyer covering their four previous starts and the third-place finisher came back to run second in MSW company at Charles Town. Make him today’s solo play on the class drop.

Charles Town - Race #7

#3 Born to Sin	Don't think he's going to offer much of a price here, but he's not facing much unless one of these debuters is ready to roll, and something like his last probably keeps him in the frame again.
#5 O'Rigsby	He was no match when a distant third about eight lengths behind the top choice when they met last time out, but he has a little upside with just the one career start under his belt.
#8 Makin' Gold	Take a look at all the firsters on the track and tote, but I wonder if this guy might be ready enough to make an impact at first asking.
Race Summary	Born to Sin has already run a couple races that would probably be tough with this group, and the fresh faces look to be the main concern -- none of whom are from the regularly dominant barns with these types

Charles Town - Race #8

#6 Father Walsh	He will need his best stuff to handle a couple tough customers signed on in here, but he might land the right kind of trip just behind a few potential burners going to the front early.
#1 Storm Boarder	Wouldn't be a shock at all to see this guy blitz them from the rail draw, and he's a super consistent type who has been able to find big efforts over a lot of different tracks in the last couple years.
#7 Qualify	He fits in here with his best, but I'm not sure he's quick enough to beat the inside runner to the front, and he has always done his best work when on the engine.
Race Summary	Father Walsh proved a decent fit with similar last time out, and I'm hoping the other listed pair do early battle and set things up for him to pick it up late.

Charles Town - Race #9

#7 Boca Birdie	Think she's worth a little price look in a spot where a lot of them might be struggling to dig deep late, and it wouldn't be a shock to see her clunk up past some of these at a nice number.
#10 Lil Sweetheart	She's capable of a better effort than she showed last out, and I think getting back around two turns should work in her favor. Think there are a couple interesting price options.
#6 Bonnie Bluetooth	She's a fairly reliable underneath player, but she's typically one to give away some ground late and might have to settle for a share again.
Race Summary	Boca Birdie has some mild finishing ability, and her best recent stuff isn't all that far off what it might take to land this if a handful of them are straggling home late. Not sure what to do with #4 Love to Zoom -- she was dull with similar last out but now goes out of a solid barn with these types.

#1 FAIRVIEW (7-2)	Troubled run in 5-horse field, needs alert break from the rail.
#3 DISCREETLIN JONES (5-1)	‘Reluctant’ in MSW debut, worked bullet for new barn.
#6 MORGANS COVE (3-1)	Found Lasix and blinkers of little help, still dangerous anywhere near best.
Race Summary	FAIRVIEW spotted the field several lengths when she hopped in the air at the start, rushed up and steadied briefly on the backstretch, then finished willingly on the rail for second behind the wire-to-wire runaway. She meets PA breds tonight and offers fair value for a win and place bet.

Penn National - Race #3

#3 TRENDING UP (9-2)	Full of run on rail in short field, barn does well with new acquisitions.
#4 PICTOR (9-5)	Has good first gear, has loyal following, loves to win.
#2 MEET ME AT MUNDIS (6-1)	Sustained 3- and 4-wide run to win going away as faves faltered.
Race Summary	TRENDING UP, first or second in 12 of 18 starts at Penn National, ran a late scare into the odds-on favorite and was claimed again. He merits a long look in his second start on the cutback to a sprint. Bet to win and place.

Penn National - Race #4

#5 IOANNA (5-1)	Stopped in last two starts, can turn tables on many of same rivals with second-time Lasix.
#2 FINE ALEIGH (5-2)	Wide rally, needed more, wears hood for first time.
#6 BUSTIN WIDE OPEN (3-1)	Rallied into soft pace to finish second for new connections.
Race Summary	IONANNA got Lasix and back-pedaled on the class drop to this level, but she can use her speed well in this spot at an inflated price. She appears an all-or-nothing type, so play a 5-ALL exacta.

I favor MASTER OF ARMS here. His 81 average has this gelding with among the best Equibase speed figs for this event. Could best this group of horses in this race based on the Equibase Speed Figure - 84 - of his last affair. He has very good class ratings, averaging 92, and has to be given a shot in this race. VICTORY MARCH - Is a very solid contender based on figs garnered recently under today's conditions. Is a key contender - given the 84 speed rating from his most recent race. BLOW TORCH - With Castillo in the saddle guiding him, this gelding will most likely be able to break out sharply in this competition. Should definitely be considered for this race if only for the strong Equibase speed fig put up in the last competition.
