    Santa Anita - Race #4 - Post: 2:05pm - Optional Claiming - 9.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $72,000 Class Rating: 93

    Rating:

    #8 BIG MAMA SUE (ML=3/1)
    #6 ELEUTHERA (ML=4/1)
    #9 SUNSHINE BABE (ML=6/1)

BIG MAMA SUE - It looks like the pace horses may duel each other into the ground. When the real running starts this mare should be finishing strongly. Mare's last prep was second fastest of the day for the distance. State bred races are generally easier than 'open' company, and this mare's move into the 'state bred' class today should make her tough in here. ELEUTHERA - Running on the grass today, you should review a horse's class. This one has the top number in the bunch. Adding blinkers occasionally leads to improvement on the racetrack. SUNSHINE BABE - Came home fast last race out at Santa Anita. That type of move bodes well for her chances in this race. Last workout was the second fastest of the day. Definitely on edge for a good one today. I believe this thoroughbred will be right there at the wire. Gets Lasix for the 2nd time, so Polanco must have confidence in her.

    Vulnerable Contenders: #3 TECUMSEH CAROLINE (ML=5/2), #2 ROSE HARBOR (ML=5/1), #5 GHOSTEM (ML=6/1),

TECUMSEH CAROLINE - I just don't possess a 'use' sensation about this mount in this race. ROSE HARBOR - This steed ran a substandard speed figure last time around the track. She shouldn't run much better and will likely suffer defeat in today's event running that figure. GHOSTEM - Would have to get better off that seventh place finish last time to make an impact here. The fig in the last race doesn't fit very well in this affair when I look at the class rating of today's event. Mark this mount as a likely underpriced contender.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Play #8 BIG MAMA SUE to win if you can get odds of 2/1 or more
    EXACTA WAGERS: 8 with [6,9]

    TRIFECTA WAGERS:

      Race 1 - Allowance - 300y on the Dirt. Purse: $10000 Class Rating: 91

QUARTER HORSE 300Y, FOR THREE YEAR OLDS AND UPWARD. THREE YEAR OLDS, 126 LBS.; OLDER, 128 LBS.

      RECOMMENDED CHOICES
      # 9 D COSMIC CARTEL 8/1
      # 10 ONE FAST PERRY 15/1
      # 7 CWFASTTRACK 3/1
I think D COSMIC CARTEL is a solid selection and is a formidable value bet given the line. Should be considered in here if only for the very good speed figure recorded in the last contest. He has a respectable distance/surface win record - 3 for 14. ONE FAST PERRY - This animal should be wagered on at the expected big odds. Overall the Equibase speed figs of this horse look strong in this contest. CWFASTTRACK - Has strong early pace and will almost certainly fare soundly against this group of horses. Posted a formidable Equibase Speed Figure in the last race. Can run another good one in this affair.

        Fair Grounds - Race #1 - Post: 1:15pm - Claiming - 8.3 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $15,000 Class Rating: 81

        Rating:

        #4 COASTAL CHAOS (ML=5/2)

COASTAL CHAOS - Using this jock/handler combination is a smart move. Barrera rode this horse for the initial time in the last race and comes right back today. EPS (earnings per start) is something that I feel can be a most important handicapping aspect. This thoroughbred is ranked number 1 in this bunch.

        Vulnerable Contenders: #1 MATH MAN (ML=3/1), #6 RONITHELIMODRIVER (ML=3/1), #7 MICHAEL'S BAD BOY (ML=6/1),

MATH MAN - You cannot keep making rationalizations for a thoroughbred that just doesn't win. Don't play him. When examining today's Equibase class figure, he will have to garner a much better speed fig than last time around the track to battle in this dirt route. RONITHELIMODRIVER - Tough to bet on a thoroughbred that loses so frequently. This mount hasn't had nary a single blow out after running so well on Feb 17th. This thoroughbred likes to be there at the wire, but doesn't usually get the job done. Keep out of the top spot. MICHAEL'S BAD BOY - This horse doesn't have a winner's demeanor. Time-and-again finishes near the winner.

GUEST COMMENTARY: The Brain - COASTAL CHAOS - Horseplayers may say this horse can't control the pace. While this may be true, he is the sole dominant stalker in this group. Won't be too far back when it counts - At the finish line.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: #4 COASTAL CHAOS is going to be the play if we are getting 1/1 or better

Aqueduct Horses in Focus for Friday, March 10
Posted on March 9, 2023 by David Aragona

          RACE 1: CHESS SPECTACULAR (#5)

Systemic Change (#3) is obviously the horse to beat as he makes his third start off the layoff, and many horseplayers are likely to just concede this race to him. Yet I have some reservations about accepting a short price on this horse. He returned from the layoff in a Dec. 15 race that hasn’t proven to be quite as strong as the speed figure suggests. Then last time he was no match for his stablemate after contesting an honest pace. He may win here if he merely holds his form, but there’s no guarantee that he’ll be as effective stretching out to 9 furlongs. One horse for whom distance shouldn’t be a concern is Rapper Zapper (#6). This fellow 4-year-old has had more experience than his main rival and has put forth his best efforts in two-turn dirt races. He ran well to finish just behind Afjan two back at Laurel, and that rival has since validated that form in New York. He figures to be charging late under Trevor McCarthy at what could be a fair price. However, my top pick may offer even better value. Chess Spectacular (#5) could get dismissed as the outsider in this 6-runner field. He looks light on speed figures, but he actually ran well in the second and third starts of his career facing solid maiden special weight fields. He made a strong move into a quick pace behind Rudder’s Men on Oct. 22. He faded late but didn’t finish that far behind Classic Legacy and Classic Catch, who have since done some nice things against winners. Then two back he was closing belatedly behind Sam F. Davis winner Litigate and Gotham runner-up Slip Mahoney. He obviously disappointed when dropped in for a tag last time, but he got a poor ride, buried inside early before getting shuffled out of position. I like progeny of Mastery going longer, and he could play out as the speed here. James Ryerson is 5 for 29 (17%, $2.06 ROI) first off the claim over 5 years.

          RACE 5: UPPER LEVEL (#8)

I’ll be interested to see how the pace develops in this conditioned claimer. It appears that multiple horses want the front end, but two of those come from the same barn. Tom Morley trainees Mauritius (#3) and Built to Last (#6) possess similar running styles, both doing their best work on the front end. It seems counterintuitive that both would be used aggressively to duel for the lead, so perhaps this pace won’t be quite as fast as it looks on paper. That could work against a horse like Necromancer (#1), who would fall into a great trip in four horses did battle for the lead. I’m just skeptical that scenario will transpire. The pace shouldn’t bother morning line favorite Jester’s Song (#5) too much, as he’s generally pretty versatile. Yet I have some doubts about this runner’s current form. He has faced much tougher fields in each of his last two starts, but he still didn’t do any running in those races. Now he returns from yet another layoff dropping down to a realistic level. I just wonder if he’s still capable of producing those speed figures he was earning in the middle of last year. I want to go in a different direction with Upper Level (#8). I think this horse is as likely to win as anyone else in this field and I doubt he attracts enough support to be favored. He’s been facing better fields at the starter allowance level and hasn’t run that badly in his recent starts despite the fact that he hasn’t been ridden that aggressively. This horse had the misfortune of facing off against the speedball Ikigai twice in a row, and it’s nearly impossible to outrun that rival to the front end. Last time Jose Gomez didn’t even try, experimenting with rating tactics. I expect the intention is to be more aggressive here with the switch to Jaime Torres. He’s drawn well on the outside and I think he’ll be tough to beat if he can reproduce either of his first two efforts after being claimed by Natalia Lynch.

          RACE 6: ROYAL MEGHAN (#1)

I don’t deny that Dame Cinco (#5) is a contender in this $32k claimer, but she strikes me as one that will be a very short price and I don’t think she’s quite that likely to visit the winner’s circle. Her speed figures are strong, but they don’t make her some kind of standout. This is a drop in class out of some tougher spots, but she also got great trips in her recent races and in some cases took advantage of favorable circumstances. I don’t want to just concede the victory to her at a short price when I think there’s another viable contender in this field. Royal Meghan (#1) seems just as likely to win this race and she figures to be a more appealing price. This mare won at this level three back with a strong speed figure. Since then, she stepped up to face a much tougher field two back, and failed to run her race in the fog. Then last time she was against a track that was favoring inside paths, racing 3 to 4-wide around the turn and into the lane. She was beaten by today’s rival Mon Petit Shou (#7), but I thought Royal Meghan ran the better race that day. Now she’s drawn inside and I’m hoping to see Kendrick Carmouche give her a more aggressive rider, mimicking the successful tactics she used in October.

Gulfstream Park: Key Horses for Friday, March 10

Well, Thursday was foolish. 0/1 with a loser in the first race and two scratches. How dare they waste the Ductor’s capping time with scratches. Someone must atone for their sins, and it will be the passengers who don’t bet these ponies today. We seek vengeance. Skip.

              Gulfstream Park March 10, 2023

              Race 6: Maiden Special Weight

#3 Spun Oats will move over to the turf today after running third over the synthetic in her debut race. They wanted to run her on the turf last time out. #7 Naa Dudette has run solid since moving over to the turf in her last two starts. She should be competitive again today.

              Race 7: Allowance Optional Claiming
              freestar

#3 Three Witches has hit the board in all four of her starts so far coming into this race. She nearly won at this level last time out. #6 Signal From Noise was a solid second when facing winners for the first time last time out over this track. She should move forward off of that effort today.

              Race 8: Allowance Optional Claiming

#6 Slipstream returns to the United States today after running at Ascot last season. He was a solid stakes winner at Keeneland before going overseas. #2 Dr Zempf makes his United States debut in this spot today for Chad Brown. He was a Grade 3 winner overseas, which should translate well to the United States.

              Race 9: Claiming

#4 Readyseekgo won over this surface three starts back, while running third against claiming company over this track last time out. #6 The Sleepy Chipmunk broke his maiden last time out over this track, which was his first race over the surface. He should move forward off of that effort today.

Busan Friday: Race-By-Race Preview (March 10)

The weekend’s racing gets underway on Friday at Busan where there are 8 races from 12:00 to 18:00. Here are the previews:

                Busan Race 1: Class 6 (1200M) Special Weight A / KRW 40 Million

A maiden for three-year-olds opens proceedings. There are three debut-makers and at least one of them looks interesting. (5) JANGSAN LEMON is half-brother to a couple of good talents and having gained almost 20kg since a trio of trials last year, he was well held together when winning a February heat in a good time without being asked to do too much. He will be well backed on debut and has every chance. (3) EVERY KING IJI was much improved when 2nd at start number two on February 23rd and from a much better gate can back that up here. (12) JORDAN FIGHTING came from of the pace to run a good 4th in a quick race on debut on February 12th. The wide draw shouldn’t be an issue and with some natural improvement he should be right in this. First-timer (11) CHOEGANG WEEK was an on-pace 3rd in her trial in a fast time on a wet track on February 11th. She was asked for a little more effort than Jangsan Lemon was but if she brings that form to the races, a bold showing first-up is possible. (8) MOVIE MORE was inconvenienced coming out of the gates at this latest effort, but going on his showing on debut, should be competitive here.
Selections (5) Jangsan Lemon (3) Every King Iji (12) Jordan Fighting (11) Choegang Week
                Next Best 8, 4
                Fast Start 4, 5, 6, 11

                Busan Race 2: Class 5 (1300M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

                (2) BUDDY BUDDY didn’t disgrace himself when tried in Listed juvenile company last November and has since registered back-to-back 4th places over 1400M and 1200M, beating a couple of these along the way. He draws well to get on the speed here and he should prove too good. (1) BUILD UP remains a maiden after nine attempts but has gone close on a few occasions. They include his latest when he overcame gate twelve to get handy to the leaders and ran on for 4th ahead of a couple of today’s rivals. He draws much better here so should get an easier run and can be in the finish again. (8) TITAN K is another maiden, but his recent form reads fairly and at his best he can be in the frame here. (4) OK STAR and (5) ADELE CHUKBAE others in the placing hunt. The latter was in abysmal form last year but comes in off five months out and looked good when trialling just last week.
Selections (2) Buddy Buddy (1) Build Up (8) Titan K (4) OK Star
                Next Best 5, 3
                Fast Start 1, 2, 4, 10

                (2) NAKDONG JEONSA offered little in two outings last autumn but looked a much better prospect when returning from three months out at the beginning of last month and running 2nd over 1300M having settled midfield and run on well. He should strip fitter for the run, he comes up to the mile for the first time, and he can win here. (10) TOP FRIEND was ridden handy for the first time on his latest appearance, but it proved unsuccessful as he weakened. He had previous had good results having gone to the back of the field and then finishing off well for 4th and 2nd over 1200M and 1300M. The wide draw may actually be in his favour here and the additional trip can suit. (4) FLYING TOUCH is another who may appreciate the additional distance. Her times over the shorter courses have been nothing special but she has finished off her last two well, running 5th on both occasions and she should be aiming to get in the money here. (6) SUNDAY MONEY and (5) DAEJI FLY are the other placing contenders.
Selections (2) Nakdong Jeonsa (10) Top Friend (4) Flying Touch (6) Sunday Money
                Next Best 5, 7
                Fast Start 2, 4, 8, 10

                Busan Race 4: Class 5 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

Fillies and mares only here. (1) GOLDEN WAVE ran 2nd on debut in January before getting her maiden win at start number two over this distance on February 10th, making all. Both those were in all-filly company and it’s the same again today so despite being up in class, she should be using her good draw to get on pace and win again. (9) DIABLO QUEEN come sin off a very quick win at class and distance on February 10th when on pace throughout. She was second up that day following almost ten months off and with an apprentice engaged here she barely comes up in weight. She looks the main danger to the favourite. (6) DOCTOR SHARK came from off the pace to get her first win, also on February 10th. She is up in class but down in weight and she can measure up amongst this lot. (3) TWO TWO LIME and (5) BREAD HIT others to keep safe.
Selections (1) Golden Wave (9) Diablo Queen (6) Doctor Shark (3) Two Two Lime
                Next Best 5, 12
                Fast Start 1, 5, 9, 12

                Busan Race 5: Class 5 (1800M) Special Weight B / KRW 40 Million

                (5) INDIE BULPAE returned seven months after an inauspicious debut to win well first-up over a mile in January. He then came up to this class on February 12th and led for much of the way around over this distance before ultimately running 2nd to Pistol Star, but beating three of today’s rivals in the process. He carries his fair share of weight here but he should prove to good and will start as hot favourite. The second favourite will be (7) DOCTOR PERO. He has similar form having won at class 6 level over a mile two starts back before coming from off the pace to run 2nd on his first try at this class and distance on January 27th. That was a much slower race than Indie Bulpae’s but he can be a danger. Next best is (9) ADELE STELLA. She is yet to finish in the top-two in eleven attempts but she has no fewer then eight finishes between 3rd and 5th including last time out at this class and distance. She may find a couple too quick again but shouldn’t be far away. (6) FIRST PARK and (3) RUNNING WARRIOR others in the frame.
Selections (5) Indie Bulpae (7) Doctor Pero (9) Adele Stella (6) First Park
                Next Best 3, 1
                Fast Start 1, 3, 5, 6

                Busan Race 6: Class 4 (1600M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million

                Advertisements
                Report this ad

Tricky race here with plenty having claims. We’ll give another chance to (4) COME ON FIRST, who was a beaten favourite on February 12th at class and distance when a touch slow away before being ridden up to be close to the speed then weakening on a wet track. He has won at this distance though and from a good draw can sit behind the speed and return to winning ways today. That will mean overturning the form on (6) LADY GOLDEN, who won that February 12th race after getting a beautiful start from the widest gate and leading all the way, just holding on. An apprentice keeps her at the same weight and she comes into a much better gate so warrants respect here. (1) YEOSU FIGHTER comes up in class and in trip after recent good work over 1400M. H has only finished outside of the top four on one occasions and he comes down in the weights here. Expect him to be on pace and in this a long way. (9) GREEN PAPAGO and (2) YONGCHEON among several others with at least placing hopes.
Selections (4) Come On First (6) Lady Golden (1) Yeosu Fighter (9) Green Papago
                Next Best 2, 3
                Fast Start 1, 6, 10, 12

                Busan Race 7: Class 4 (1400M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million

                (7) RAP VERSA will be heavily favoured here. He enters off back-to-back runner-up finishes at this class and distance in January and February, beating three of these in the first of them. He comes up slightly in the weights but won under this impost at class 5 level. He can sit behind the leaders and prove too strong at the business end. At an each-way price it might be worth taking a chance on (1) GRAPHENE KING. He comes up in weight but back down in class after a try at class 3 level two weeks ago and comes back up to a distance at which he was runner-up on his only previous try. He likes to be on pace, and he comes into a much better gate than in his latest two. (6) FANTASTIC LOVE came from well back to run 3rd at big odds over class and distance on February 5th. She carries a light weight again and will be much shorter today. (3) ALPHA SONGDANG and (10) ILNYEOM CHEONHA are both better than their respective latest starts and can be considered at least for the minors.
Selections (7) Rap Versa (1) Graphene King (6) Fantastic Love (3) Alpha Songdang
                Next Best 10, 2
                Fast Start 1, 2, 3, 10

                Busan Race 8: Class 3 (1400M) Handicap / KRW 75 Million

                (9) GANGSEO GIANT has won her latest two at 1000M and 1200M, the latter in fine fashion on January 27th. She comes up in class here and in trip but she comes down in the weights and looks to have plenty of promise for further development. (3) CAPTAIN GOLD shapes as the main danger. He too is up in class following a good win over this distance on February 17th continuing a very consistent start to his career that has seen in him the top-four in all eight outings so far. He draws well to get on pace, is down in weight, and should have a big part to play. (6) MENIFEE SONG beat Captain Gold when the pair ran 1st and 3rd two starts back, before finishing runner-up to him when they met again on that February 17th race. He joins him up in class but down in weight and in with a chance. (12) FASHION BLADE and (5) UNBREAK are others to keep safe.
