Jeremy Plonk: Tampa Bay Derby Day Pick 4/Pick 5 | Saturday

          March 9, 2023 | By Jeremy Plonk

Saturday’s Tampa Bay Derby Day card on the Gulf Coast features an all-stakes pick four and pick five. The two sequences overlap, so you can approach both with little additional effort.

Tampa Bay Downs | Race 7 | $75,000 Columbia Stakes

Turf miles are often very friendly to layoff horses, which helps the cause of #1 Freedom Trail and #9 Mo Stash as the top two morning line choices. If you like them, and I do, don’t worry about the time away. #10 Talk of the Nation took to the local turf with promise last month in a sharp allowance prep. This trio is in the mix, but my lean is to #7 Worthington. His third in the Dania Beach two starts back on turf was superb given the top 2, Candidate and Major Dude, are big-time sophomore turfers and returned to run 1-2 in the Grade 3 Kitten’s Joy. Look to the exacta key-box intra-race 7 with 1,9,10 and consider all 4 in the pick five opener (with more tickets to the top pick).

          Tampa Bay Downs | Race 8 | Grade 3 $100,000 Challenger Stakes

I’ve got at least 3 horses in here that I deem need-the-lead to run their best (#3 Mighty Heart, #4 Classic Causeway, #7 Tax). That puts the focus on late-running closers to rule the stretch. #9 Brooklyn Strong comes back off a long break for a high-octane trainer in Victor Barboza. Look for Samy Camacho to time his move with precision if he’s got any horse underneath him. At 30-1 morning line, it would be a big time for this one to return to his best form. #8 Business Model and #6 The Reds also should be moving best late. I’ll use the trio of closers in the pick five/pick four, while obvious intra-race action in the win pool on the longshot top peg. This is the leg we separate from the masses with a stand-against 8-5 morning line favorite #2 Skippylongstocking for his inconsistency and underlay price.

          Tampa Bay Downs | Race 9 | Grade 2 $225,000 Hillsborough Stakes

Absolutely no excuses here for #6 Shantisara, runner-up in a Pegasus World Cup Turf in which any one of 3 or 4 alumni of that race would be favored here. Her Chad Brown stablemates include #1 Kalifornia Queen, who simply hangs late and fails to deliver in nearly every one of her starts; and #4 Rougir, who ran well fresh last year in the Beaugay and hits a potentially favorable form cycle for her best. My preference is to single #6 Shantisara, though two-deep with #4 Rougir is a viable argument. But for the same cost, I’d rather have the ticket twice with #6 Shantisara than to be watered down for ‘safety.’

          Tampa Bay Downs | Race 10 | Grade 3 $200,000 Florida Oaks

Good options exist here, led by #6 Navy Goat, a talented 2-year-old who was knocked off her best tracking position in her sophomore return in the Ginger Brew. That loss to the top-class Cairo Consort continues to look more acceptable. A 20-day gap in Navy Goat’s workout tab does concern me, Feb. 5-25, otherwise I’d be inclined to go all-in. Still, the top pick and win play intra-race. The door opens to include #2 All Americanbeauty, #3 Alpha Bella and #10 Free Look. Alpha Bella is beautifully drawn with tactical speed inside with the elbow start for 1-1/16 miles on the turf. Smaller budgets may consider just two-deep, but the quartet brings in another price option as well as the morning line favorite.

Tampa Bay Downs | Race 11 | Grade 3 $400,000 Tampa Bay Derby

Todd Pletcher won the local Tampa Bay Derby prep – the Sam F. Davis Stakes – with Litigate, and comes over this time with a horse who has much more talent and promise in #6 Tapit Trice. That 7 of these runners are horses who couldn’t beat Litigate last time in the Davis gives me even more confidence in the allowance potential showcased by Tapit Trice. He’s a clear single as the favorite.

          The Tickets:

          Pick 5: 7,1,9,10 with 9,8,6 with 6 with 6,2,3,10 with 6 = $24 for $.50
          Pick 4: 9,8,6 with 6 with 6,2,3,10 with 6 = $6 for $.50

Meet the Contenders: Tampa Bay Derby

            March 9, 2023 | By Jeremy Plonk

Let’s Meet the Contenders for Saturday’s Grade 3 $400,000 Tampa Bay Derby, which goes as Race 11 on a stacked Tampa Bay Downs card.

#1 Lord Miles (Paco Lopez // Saffie Joseph Jr.)
Third in Gulfstream’s Mucho Macho Man Stakes to open 2023, he took a step backwards when sixth in the Grade 3 Holy Bull in February. That was his only start in blinkers, which will be removed for Saturday, and he comes in off a bullet workout that could signify a rebound.

#2 Classic Car Wash (Emisael Jaramillo // Mark Casse)
Rallying third-place finisher in the Sam F. Davis Stakes when snapping a 2-race winning streak. Jockey Jaramillo has been a mainstay in the saddle since December. Trainer Casse is a 2-time Tampa Bay Derby winner (2012 Prospective, 2021 Helium) and also sends out Champions Dream.

#3 Classic Legacy (Irad Ortiz Jr. // Bill Mott)
The half-brother to Pegasus World Cup winner Art Collector was a credible fourth in the Sam F. Davis in his first spin over the track. Ortiz takes the mount for the first time and this one is well-drawn with a versatile running style to take advantage. Mott has won this race twice (1997 Zede, 2019 Tacitus). Ortiz won it last year aboard Classic Causeway.

#4 Groveland (Daniel Centeno // Eoin Harty)
Clear-cut second in the Sam F. Davis with the race’s best gallop-out, he tops a whopping 7 returnees from the key local prep. Son of 2007 Tampa Bay Derby and eventual Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense. Jockey Centeno is a two-time winner of this race (2009 Musket Man, 2014 Ring Weekend).

#5 Mikey Bananas (Pablo Morales // Tim Hamm)
Three times placed in local allowance races at the current meet without a win, he’ll try to snap a 5-race losing streak as one of the race’s biggest longshots. Finished fifth and eighth in only prior stakes bids last year.

#6 Tapit Trice (Luis Saez // Todd Pletcher)
Exploded onto the scene with his 8-length allowance win at Gulfstream on February 4 as part of the Holy Bull Stakes Day undercard. $1.3 million auction buy broke his maiden at Aqueduct in December over Slip Mahoney, who since has a runner-up finish in the Gotham Stakes. Trainer Pletcher has a record 5 wins in the Tampa Bay Derby, most recently with Tapwrit in 2017 and will also saddle Shesterkin on Saturday.

#7 Freedom Road (Hector Diaz Jr. // Greg Sacco)
Allowance sprint winner at Tampa on January 21 to open his 3-year-old season, the stretch-out ensues for this son of Malibu Moon. He was third last year in the Laurel Futurity over a 1-turn mile and fifth in the Sapling at Monmouth in his only try around 2 turns. He’ll lose jockey Pablo Morales in the Tampa Bay Derby to Mikey Bananas.

#8 Dreaming of Kona (Scott Spieth // Aldana Spieth)
Promoted to victory in Gulfstream’s 1-turn mile Mucho Macho Man Stakes after suffering slight interference late in the race. His good fortune there did not transfer to Tampa’s Sam F. Davis Stakes when a tired and well-beaten seventh. As has been his norm, he comes into the race off another bullet workout. Races for a rare, husband-wife / jockey-trainer combination of Scott and Aldana Spieth.

#9 Shesterkin (Edgard Zayas // Todd Pletcher)
Runner-up to stablemate and Tampa Bay Derby rival Tapit Trice in a February 4 Gulfstream Park allowance mile. Was bet to 4-5 favoritism that day but will be the bigger price of the pair Saturday after an 8-length defeat. Will race with blinkers on for the first time. Note jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. jumps saddles to ride Classic Legacy. Trainer Pletcher has a record 5 wins in the Tampa Bay Derby, most recently with Tapwrit in 2017 and will also saddle Tapit Trice on Saturday.

#10 Champions Dream (Antonio Gallardo // Mark Casse)
Regally bred son of Triple Crown winner Justify and the brilliant filly Dancinginherdreams. Last year’s Grade 3 Nashua winner has had difficulty pairing up strong performances in succession. Forced the pace in the Sam F. Davis and retreated to last and was essentially eased. Trainer Casse is a 2-time Tampa Bay Derby winner (2012 Prospective, 2021 Helium) and also sends out Classic Car Wash.

#11 Zydeceaux (Samuel Marin // Ramon Minguet)
Ran so admirably from a tough post 11 draw in the Sam F. Davis, bulleting out to the lead and holding game until fading a bit late to be beaten 3-1/4 lengths in fifth. The 7-furlong Pasco Stakes winner has an affinity for the track and has been consistent in all 6 starts to date. Another post 11 draw does him no favors and the field here has some additional depth not seen in the Davis.

#12 Prairie Hawk (Samy Camacho // Saffie Joseph Jr.)
Son of Curlin spent much of the Sam F. Davis in make-up mode from a bad start, essentially firing his race in the middle portion and coming up empty in the stretch. Likely better than his ninth-place run that day, but post 12 will be a stout challenge for the 2-time local dirt route race winner. Jockey Camacho won this race in 2020 with King Guillermo.

Race of the Week: Beholder Mile at Santa Anita | Saturday, 3/11

              March 9, 2023 | By Jeremy Plonk

              The Lead:
It's a Grade 1 contest with as much national intrigue as you'll see on the west coast this time of year. The Beholder Mile not only has California's leading fillies and mares on the dirt, but welcomes worthy invaders from the Steve Asmussen and Brad Cox barns. The former Vanity Stakes, the Beholder has been won by legends like Zenyatta (3 times), Paseana, Bayakoa, Princess Rooney and the great Beholder herself.

              Field Depth:
PAULINE'S PEARL and FUN TO DREAM are established Grade 1 winners. The Grade 2 winners include MIDNIGHT MEMORIES and DESERT DAWN. KIRSTENBOSCH and A MO REAY have Grade 3 scores to their credit. AWAKE AT MIDNYTE is Grade 1-placed. AWAKE AT MIDNYTE and PAULINE'S PEARL have arguably kept the best company lines over the longest period, but there's not a big swath in class to evaluate here. And, there's not an easy toss-out in the bunch.

              Pace:
Bob Baffert-trained stablemates GANADORA and MIDNIGHT MEMORIES appear quickest early, but you never know if barnmates will duke it out the way it looks on paper. The pressers appear to be AWAKE AT MIDNYTE and yet another Baffert, likely favorite FUN TO DREAM. This pace doesn't look like it will be slow, even if they try, but it likely won't melt down because of the friendly fire.

              Our Eyes:
              Here are my horse-by-horse notes.

1-KIRSTENBOSCH: Trainer John Sadler is a 3-time winner of this race, most recently 2017 with Stellar Wind. Rallying third behind Fun to Dream going 7 furlongs and liked the interest she showed late last time to seal the route deal.

2-PAULINE'S PEARL: Steve Asmussen trainee exits victory in the Sam Houston Ladies Classic for the second straight year, but comes west this time instead of repeating her bid in the same-day Azeri Stakes at Oaklawn. Her barnmate Clairiere is there, leaving the door open for a road trip. Best trip is 1-1/16 miles, so she might need a bit of pace help to excel at the flat mile.

3-AWAKE AT MIDNTYE: Runner-up in all 4 Santa Anita stakes bids, it's fair to question if she'll want to punch by at this distance against this quality. But rest assured, she'll bring her effort. She's lost 2 of 3 head-to-heads with FUN TO DREAM.

4-MIDNIGHT MEMORIES: She's won both career routes and is 3-for-4 at Santa Anita, yet the La Brea beaten favorite could be a bit forgotten on the tote after a disappointing try at 7 furlongs. It really comes down to how hot the early pressure is on her as part of the pace.

5-A MO REAY: That's amore. At least that's how you say it. But I did love the tenacity she showed at Oaklawn last time to run down a determined front-runner who was looking for her third straight stakes win of the local meet. That style will serve the Brad Cox trainee well in the Beholder with targets needed to tackle. We saw Swiss Skydiver come west to win this race in 2021, something this filly and Pauline's Pearl will try to follow.

6-GANADORA: No slouch for sure, but quite likely a pace player who gives way here. John Velazquez jumps off to ride a non-Baffert in Pauline's Pearl, which is noteworthy.

7-DESERT DAWN: With 7 straight superfecta finishes in graded stakes, she'll come off a September layoff in a difficult spot. Last year's Santa Anita Oaks winner has yet to beat elders, but was runner-up in a Clement Hirsch Stakes at Del Mar that was simply a better group than this. She'll fit and seems fit enough on works for Phil D'Amato.

8-FUN TO DREAM: Likely favorite has just 1 loss in 7 starts, but this will be her first route try in a stakes race. She did win around 2 turns in allowance company last year. She had a very sharp look and finish in the Santa Monica and if she translates that form longer, she'll be very tough to beat. But from a tough post for her pressing running style, and uncertainty how she'll handle 2 turns against this level of competition, you don't have to concede to a short price.

              Most Certain Exotics Contender:
FUN TO DREAM has not shown any obvious flaws.

              Best Longshot Exotics Contender:
KIRSTENBOSCH was 31-1 when third in the La Brea and improved routing since then. She'll probably maintain a fair to overlay price.

              Sending it in ($100 bankroll):
$80 win A MO REAY. $10 exacta box FUN TO DREAM and A MO REAY ($20).

Seoul Saturday: Race-By-Race Preview (March 11)

Highly thought-of three-year-old filly Raon Giant steps up to 1800M in the class 2 feature at Seoul on Saturday. She will be the main attraction on the 10-race card that runs from 10:35 to 18:00. Here are the previews:

                Seoul Race 1: Class 6 (1200M) Special Weight A / KRW 40 Million

Three-year-old maiden fillies in the opener and (10) APEX will be at the top of the market. After an inauspicious debut in November, she has since run in a 3rd and a 2nd in two subsequent starts, once from off the pace and once when on the speed, both at 1300M. Despite the wide draw she should have enough about her to get to the lead early here and she won’t have to improve much to win this. The main danger is (5) MUNHAK CENTRAL. She improved to 4th at start number two over this distance on February 4th when coming from well back and while she is yet to stop the clock in a fast time, she should appreciate the slight step up in trip and can continue to make progress. There are two debut-makes and (4) FIJI BLADE could be one to keep an eye on. She went through two trials, improving in the second of them when she led and from a good draw, she can be on pace and in this a long way. (9) LADY TAEPUNG and (2) HAPPY PLAY others who could come into play.
Selections (10) Apex (5) Munhak Central (4) Fiji Blade (9) Lady Taepung
                Next Best 2, 1
                Fast Start 1, 4, 9, 10

                Seoul Race 2: Class 6 (1200M) Special Weight A / KRW 40 Million

Three-year-old maidens with four of the eleven racing for the first time. Three or four of these look ready to win but we’ll side with (9) K N GOLDEN KING. He ran a sold 3rd on debut when he settled midfield and ran on over the same trip as today. It wasn’t a quick race, but he should have derived benefit from the experience and Moon Se-young remains aboard. One of those ready to win is a debut-maker. That’s (1) BULPAE BLADE. Who led every step of the way to win a trial on February 17th in a decent time well clear of the rest. He draws very nicely to lead again and if he brings that form to the races, he can make a bold showing first up. (8) SMARTY FIGHTER improved to 2nd at start number two over this distance on February 4th. He carries the same weight and draws the same gate and can go close again. (7) SINUI HAMSEONG and (3) TAMRA CHOEGANGJA others in the hunt in one of the more intriguing recent maidens.
Selections (9) K N Golden King (1) Bulpae Blade (8) Smarty Fighter (7) Sinui Hamseong
                Next Best 3, 5
                Fast Start 1, 6, 8, 10

                Seoul Race 3: Class 6 (1300M) Special Weight A / KRW 25 Million

                Advertisements
                Report this ad

Regular maiden here and (4) TEUKGEUP DAERO is the one to beat. After a fair debut on Christmas Eve when she was slow away but rallied, she reappeared on February 4th to run a good 2nd behind the favourite over this distance when settling midfield and finishing well. With a little more natural improvement from that, she can win. (5) SONGAM ARCHGIRL is the clear second pick. She managed three top-four finishes from four starts in the first half of last year before suffering a setback that saw her unable to race after June. She looked very well when 2nd in a January trial and while she will clearly need this, it is hardly the most intimidating race to return in. (2) HUMMING BIRD had a poor day at the office at his latest outing in December. Going on his previous start when 2nd at 1200M in November, then he can be right in this (9) BEST PLAN and (3) AREUMDAUN SAI potential improvers.
Selections (4) Teukgeup Daero (5) Songam Archgirl (2) Humming Bird (9) Best Plan
                Next Best 3, 8
                Fast Start 2, 5, 7, 8

                Seoul Race 4: Class 6 (1700M) Special Weight A / KRW 25 Million

Weak maiden which (3) CAMINO should be winning. He has raced just three times with his best being 3rd over 1200M on Christmas Day but he stepped up to this trip on February 26th and ran 5th of twelve in a time faster than any of the others have managed for the distance. He won’t need to improve much to win, probably leading all the way. (1) TIZ HUNTER got his best result to date when coming up to this distance for the first time on February 12th. He settled right back as he had in every start so far but for the first time was able to run on and finish 3rd, beating a couple of today’s rivals. A similar run will see plenty come back to him again here. (8) GREEN BULPAE was 4th behind Tiz Hunter in that February race, similarly coming from off the pace. That was a marked improvement for her too and she can be considered. (7) CLAIR POWER and (5) UDDUG other placing chances.
Selections (3) Camino (1) Tiz Hunter (8) Green Bulpae (7) Clair Power
                Next Best 5, 4
                Fast Start 3, 4, 5, 7

                Seoul Race 5: Class 5 (1300M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

Having run 2nd on debut, (7) ORCHID VALLEY was a good winner at start number two on January 14th, providing Antonio Da Silva his 300th Korean winner in the process. He comes up in class here as well as marginally up in trip, but he comes down in the weights and from a central draw can sit handy and prove too strong. (6) STRENGTH got his maiden win in eye-catching fashion two starts back but was a touch disappointing when sent off as favourite for his first try at class and distance on February 11th, leading for much of the way but ultimately weakening to finish in the middle of the pack. He can be given another chance here. (9) MAGLE DAY comes up in class having won at start number four over this distance on February 11th, having raced handy throughout. He had been building up to that win and with some more natural improvement, he can measure up here. (8) RIVER TAEYANG and (2) COWBOY TANGO are others who can enter the calculations.

                (6) TES GO DAEBO returned from eleven months out to run a solid 4th at this class and distance on February 4th having overcome the wide draw. Before his layoff, he won back-to-back races settling midfield and running on and he should be a whole lot better for that run last month. He will be the hot favourite here. (2) BLACK MASK comes back in trip after two underwhelming showings over 1700M. Back to one turn racing he may be ridden closer to the speed today and he has an excellent record of finishing in the money. Expect improvement. (1) GREAT THUNDER is a winner at this class over 1200M as recently as last November. It’s been a while since he tackled the seven-furlongs but he is nicely drawn here to be on pace and he can be in this a long way. (5) ALCHAN NURI and (4) TAEYANGTAGO are the other logical money hopes.

It’s risky recommending horses who at their last start won unexpectedly at very big odds, to repeat. Especially if they are carrying a full 5kg extra and will be a much shorter price this time around. Nevertheless, we are going to side with (1) GWANGYANG EUTTEUM, who pulled off that unexpected victory on February 19th, leading from gate to wire. He draws very well though, he should lead again, and lightning may well strike twice. (11) GLOBAL KANGTA has won two of his latest three to get rapidly promoted to this class. At his latest he made all to win over this distance at class 5 level on February 12th but he has good finishing speed too so doesn’t need to lead and he can be a big danger late on here. (9) WONDER K mixes his form but in this company he should be competitive. (10) IMUGI and (7) THUNDER FLASH others in the hunt.

Competitive race. (11) WINNER YOUNG is an up and comer who is yet to finish outside of the top four in five starts. He stepped up to this class on February 5th and ran a solid 3rd over 1700M, settling back and running on. He should have benefitted from the two-turn experience and despite the wide draw, he can win today. Plenty of these raced one another over 1700M n February 11th. (2) VIKING HEART was the favourite that day and he continued a solid run of form with another near-miss, running 3rd having been handy throughout. He comes up a little in the weights but draws nicely and he should have the beating of plenty of these again. He will though need to overturn the form on (9) ROYAL HAMSEONG. He came from well off the pace under a perfectly timed Munro ride to win that February 11th race at big odds. He comes up a full 4kg in the weights, but a repeat can’t be ruled out. (10) TIZ ENERGY and (4) WORLD RACER are among plenty of others with at least placing claims.

                (1) WONPYEONG COD won back-to-back at a mile in November and then a valuable race over 1800M in December to get promoted to this class. He opened his 2023 campaign with a 3rd place at this class and distance in a slowly run race on February 4th when as usual settling back and then running on. There might be a bit more speed for him to attack here and while he carries his fair share of weight, he is the one to beat. (2) COMPLETE TIME needs to be forgiven his latest when on pace but weakening. He was previously going very well and today gets a much better draw which should give him an easier run to the front. He’ll be in this a long way. (11) THE QUEEN JUSTICE comes up in class and in distance following a good win over 1400M on February 4th. He recent form has been good and the way she has been racing suggests the extended distance can suit under a light weight. (10) YEONGGWANGUI MISO and (8) GOLDEN SERVICE among others to keep safe.

                (2) RAON GIANT is a winner of five from six so far, including the Listed Gwacheon Mayor’s Trophy for juveniles last November. In each of her last four she has led every step of the way and she steps up to the Oaks distance of 1800M looking to burnish her Triple Tiara credentials. This field can provide a stern examination, but she should pass it. (1) JEONGMUN BOLT is perhaps the most likely to beat her. He comes in following an on pace win at class and distance on January 29th and while he is up a full 6kg in the weights, he is in very good form and can go close again. (9) JANGSAN MONSTER is up in class after an all the way win over this distance on February 5th. He has an excellent record of getting in the top-three and while he draws the widest gate, that shouldn’t be too much of a disadvantage in this small field. (5) BOLT MAN and (4) WILDLY ROMANTIC others in the minor money frame.

                  RACE 3: BREW PUB (#1)

I don’t trust most of the short prices in this conditioned claimer. Many will perceive Naked and Famous (#5) as the one to beat given his fast recent speed figure and pace advantage. He is the quickest of them all in the early stages. However, he has to get the 6 1/2 furlongs and do so while stepping up in class to face a much tougher field than he beat last time. That recent 97 TimeformUS Speed Figure makes him fit at this level, but he’s hardly a standout and could go off at a short price. Cousin Andrew (#6) and Joey Loose Lips (#3) have both earned similar numbers that put them in the mix, but I’m concerned about their recent form. The former looks like a slightly stronger contender, but he’s coming off a disappointing loss as the 2-5 favorite against a weaker field. I instead want to take a horse that’s dropping in class. Brew Pub (#1) has been keeping much tougher company at the New York-bred N2X optional claiming level. He’s not quite good enough to win those races, but he’s nevertheless run well on a few occasions. He finished a good second in an off the turf race last September and more recently has earned solid speed figures behind superior animals like Today’s Flavor, Who Hoo That’s Me, and Bold Journey. He’s now getting significant class relief and should mind a wet track, since he’s run some of his best races over that kind of going.

                  RACE 8: LUNI SIMA (#5)

A couple of recent maiden winners figure to attract support in this N1X affair. Reserve Currency (#4) could go favored off his 9-length maiden score going this distance last time. He got a great trip that day, rallying into a contested pace before sailing clear late. Yet the runner-up in that affair returns to barely get the job done as a heavy favorite in his next start, so I’m not sure if he was beating anything of quality. He also may not get the same pace setup this time, and a likely wet track is another uncertain variable. Celestial Moon (#1) ran a similar speed figure when breaking his maiden in mid-December. He did handle a wet track to get the job done in his first and only start on dirt. Yet he also beat a field of suspect quality, as those who finished directly behind him have generally come back to disappoint in subsequent starts. I’m somewhat against both of these horses in a race that I think is more wide open than it might appear at first glance. I believe the horse to beat is Patient Capital (#7). He’s lost at short prices a few times recently, but I thought he ran very well last time. The pace of that Feb. 11 affair was quick, and he had to be used quite a bit to set those fractions before succumbing to deep closers in the late stages. The pace should be more moderate this time and that figures to make him very dangerous. Majority Partner (#2) could also work out a good trip close to the pace. However, he has to break better than he has been in his recent starts. The distance is also a concern, since he’s never gone this far. Yet he has shown good stamina in his fast-paced sprint races, and his recent TimeformUS speed figures are the highest in the field. My top pick is Luni Sima (#5). He’s going to be the best price of those who I think have a good chance to win. Some may hold his last race against him when he lost ground in the late stages, but 9 furlongs was just too far for him. He’s had success going this one-turn mile in the past, and he figures to sit a great trip stalking the pace. A repeat of his second-place 108 TimeformUS Speed Figure performance two back makes him a legitimate threat, and the price will be fair. He’s also handled wet tracks before.

RACE 9: EASY TO BLESS (#5)

I have trouble taking a short price on Rossa Veloce (#1) as she steps up into stakes company. This New York-bred 5-year-old is obviously in the best form of her career right now, earning speed figures that you never would have thought she was capable of achieving prior to coming into the Rob Atras barn. That 112 TimeformUS Speed Figure she earned for her victory over Beguine two back looked like a fluke at the time, but she came back to repeat it last time, winning decisively at the N2X level. There isn’t that much speed in here to press her early, so she’s a deserving favorite. However, she does have to come off Lasix and is drawn on the rail, so there are some reasons to be skeptical at a very short price. Prodigy Doll (#3) comes in with solid credentials from Laurel. She’s picked up minor awards in a few stakes there and has generally performed well when appropriately placed. This Correction didn’t come up nearly as tough as it could have, so she appears to be a good fit. I’m just a little concerned that she might not get the right pace setup as a confirmed closer. If I’m trying to beat this favorite, I want to do it with Easy to Bless (#5). I kept the faith with her last time when she was making her third start off the layoff. She had made middle moves to no avail in her two starts upon returning this winter, and finally put it all together last time. She didn’t even break as slowly as she had in her prior races, but stumbled a few strides out of the gate, which still put her at the back of the pack. She did well to overcome that, making a wide sweep to victory. If she can continue that progression here, I think she’s the biggest rival to Rossa Veloce, since she does have the prior speed figures to compete at this level. She rarely gets that much respect, so the price will be fair.

                      Handicapper's Corner: 2023 Beholder Mile (G1)
                      Behold the Dawn
                      By: Michael Amo, ThoroFan Handicapper

Beholder, the namesake for this classic race, was just inducted into the Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame in 2022 at age 12—her first year of eligibility.

The induction was understandable simply by looking over her career. One of her 18 wins came in the Pacific Classic where she beat the boys.

And of course we all remember that 2016 Breeders’ Cup Distaff where she defeated champion filly Songbird by a nose. There remains no doubt why this week’s mile race is named in her honor.

The field of eight running in this prestigious mile race run over the dirt course at Santa Anita. Weather forecasts call for a good amount of rain with the likelihood that the track will be off. Here is the field:

                      1. Kirstenbosch (Midnight Lute) is progressing over the last five races. Won last over an off Santa Anita surface with a Tomlinson wet rating of 384. Looks to sit off the place, but may not be fast enough to finish with the rest.

                      2. Pauline’s Pearl (Tapit) is shortening up to a mile for the first time. Closed to win the last on a muddy track with a legitimate speed figure, however not her best. Owns a bullet workout. Gets new jockey, Johnny Velazquez. Will be tough to beat.

                      3. Awake At Midnyte (Nyquist) finished second in the LaBrea Stakes (GI). Did less well in next race which raises questions of actual form and readiness for this level. No experience over a muddy track. Maybe in exotics.

                      4. Midnight Memories (Mastery) one of three runners trained by Bob Baffert. Has a bullet workout and a grade three mile win at Del Mar. Will likely want to control the early pace and will avoid mud kick-back. Has four front-end wins out of six tries. Could be close at the wire.

                      5. A Mo Reay (Uncle Mo) showed a liking for an off track with a win in a non-graded stakes races at the Fair Grounds with a 389 Tomlinson wet rating. Most experienced miler. Thorograph numbers suggest ready to run, maybe not with these. She was a $400,000 purchase at the November 2022 sale.

                      6. Ganadora (Quality Road) is a daughter of Quality Road that sold as a yearling for $1 million. Likely will join other Baffert-trained for the lead. Gets new jockey. She tries grade one level for the second time finishing in 5th off by 6 lengths in the LaBrea Stakes (GI).

                      7. Desert Dawn (Cupid) finished an impressive 3rd on wet-fast track in the 2022 Kentucky Oaks (GI) behind Secret Oath and Nest. Holds a Tomlinson wet rating of 407 for that effort. Working nicely with a bullet last week at Santa Anita. Could surprise.

                      8. Fun to Dream (Arrogate) homebred in partnership with Bob Baffert. With Baffert’s other two runners setting the pace, she will be coming down the stretch. She boast’s a 6-for7 win record of which she is 4-for-4 over the Santa Anita track. Speed figures put her in the mix. Possible.

The strength of the race may be with the closers. The condition of the track may change that for deep closers. Strategically placed horses should do better. The two pace setters are fast and will heat-up the pace. The outside posts may avoid the heavy, wet kick-back and finish well. Here is how I see the race finishing:

                      7. Desert Dawn (4-1)

                      8. Fun to Dream (5-2)

                      2. Pauline’s Pearl (7-2)

                      6. Ganadora (15-1)

                      Handigamble:

                      $30 to win on #7 = $30

                      $40 to place on #7 = $40

                      $5 Exacta Box (#2, #7, #8) = $30

Turfway: How to bet the 2023 Big Daddy Stakes
                        John Mucciolo

A total of nine horses will go postward in Saturday’s $125,000 Big Daddy S. at Turfway Park. The six-furlong contest over the all-weather surface lacks a clear-cut favorite and is an attractive betting event, with value to be had on numerous contenders.

I’m interested in the Joe Sharp-trained #5 Anaconda (4-1) on the surface change, as well as the cut back in distance. The dark bay son of Pioneerof the Nile never fired in the Thunder Road S. (G3) at Santa Anita to commence his 2023 season last time out, but he closed out last campaign with four straight solid performances and seems poised to improve second time off the layoff.

The six-year-old gelding has some obvious class to him and fits well while making his local debut. Kentucky-bred finished a close second in the grassy Turf Sprint Championship S. at Aqueduct two back to prove that he can be effective at sprint distances, and I expect him to stalk the pace before passing horses in the stretch with sharp local pilot Gerardo Corrales accepting the assignment.

Mark Casse’s #8 Candy Overload (9-2) aced his initial try on the oval when rallying for a victory in the Forego S. here most recently. The five-year-old is a Grade 2 hero on synthetic and possesses a powerful turn of foot that will be on display once again on Saturday. Reload gelding has been first or second in 10 of his 15 career all-weather tries to date, and the Ontario-bred looks like the one to hold off inside the final yards of this dash with Luan Machado in the stirrups.

#3 Here Mi Song (3-1) has finished first or second in eight of his last 10 races overall, which includes a runner-up result in the Forego on the course last time out. The gelded son of Cross Traffic has run well on the footing and will need only slight improvement to be the one on Saturday. The fact that the five-year-old often settles for minor awards is the main reason that I will limit his use to the vertical exotics, however. Fernando de la Cruz will take the reins.

The Jury: Bets and fades for March 11
                          TwinSpires Staff

The TwinSpires jury of James Scully, Vance Hanson, and Ashley Anderson offer their thoughts on the Tampa Bay Derby card, along with competitive races at Santa Anita and Oaklawn.
                          What is your best bet?

James Scully: Everyone at Tampa Bay Downs is aware of how poorly late runners have performed in dirt routes over the last six weeks, but I'm not afraid to go against the grain with #6 The Reds (12-1) in the Challenger (G3). A contested/hot pace is projected — jockeys want to be forward on horses with early speed, and five of the nine entrants in the Challenger do their best running on the front end — and The Reds will look to take advantage of a favorable set-up. He had no chance in his comeback last out, a one-turn mile event, and will appreciate the stretch back out to 1 1/8 miles. I liked his effort in a stakes-quality allowance at Churchill Downs two back, and The Reds will be running late with Edgard Zayas.

Vance Hanson: I doubt I'll get the 4-1 morning line on #10 Talk of the Nation in the Columbia S. at Tampa Bay Downs, but he's my selection to beat shorter-odds stakes veterans like Freedom Trail and Mo Stash in the one-mile grass test for three-year-olds. A son of Quality Road and multiple Grade 2 winner She's Not Here, Talk of the Nation couldn't have looked any better when taking his grass debut by four lengths at Tampa on Feb. 4, improving his overall record to 2-for-3. This is a tougher assignment, obviously, but he has plenty of upside for Shug McGaughey, who's sent plenty of live runners to the west coast of Florida from Payson this winter.

Ashley Anderson: #2 Shantisara (2-1) is the one to beat in the 1 1/8-mile Hillsborough (G2) on Saturday after rallying to finish second in the 1 1/16-mile Pegasus World Cup Filly and Mare Turf (G3). One of three runners for Chad Brown in the field, the Irish-bred is 2-for-2 at nine furlongs and has the late kick to excel on the stretch-out here. Her 98 Brisnet Speed rating last out is the highest last race speed rating among the field, and three back she clocked a 100 BRIS figure when finishing second to stablemate Regal Glory in the Jenny Wiley (G1) at Keeneland.

Who is the horse to fade?

JS: #9 Ben Diesel (3-1) and #1 Barber Road (7-2) are the top two choices on the morning line for Saturday’s seventh race at Oaklawn Park, an entry-level allowance at 1 1/8 miles, and the short-priced runners are a combined 0-for-15 at Oaklawn. In fact, both horses haven’t won since 2021 — Ben Diesel has dropped 12 straight and Barber Road 10. I’ll try to beat them.

VH: #4 Unsung Melody (5-2) is the early favorite in the fourth race at Oaklawn Park, a six-furlong maiden for three-year-old fillies. She exits a second-place effort to Punchbowl, who came back to win an allowance last weekend. Third-placed Sacred Wish was another next-out winner, so the form of that Feb. 11 race is working out so far. However, my nagging suspicion is that Unsung Hero's surprise performance at 35-1 was enhanced to a degree by the fact she was lone speed over a muddy track. There are several other fillies here returning from that race, and perhaps things won't be so easy for Unsung Hero this time if the track is dryer. Certainly the price will not be as enticing.

AA: #2 Forbidden Kingdom (8-5) was named the morning line favorite in the seven-furlong San Carlos S. (G3) at Santa Anita, but at those odds, I'll be fading the American Pharoah four-year-old who has struggled in his last three at sprint distances. In the seven-furlong Malibu (G1) last out, Forbidden Kingdom led through the second call but lost command through the quarter pole and ultimately finished 4 1/4 lengths in second. Two back, the Richard Mandella pupil led through the stretch in a six-furlong optional claimer, then was beaten a half-length by today's race rival #5 Get Her Number (9-5). Based on the colt's recent performances, I'll look elsewhere in this field of six.

                          What else is worth noting?

JS: #6 Tapit Trice (8-5) is the one to beat in the Tampa Bay Derby (G3), and #2 Classic Car Wash (8-1) is a horse I want on any vertical exotic wagers. Following a pair of easy wins on the front end, the lightly raced and untested gelding found himself out of his element when breaking 10th in the Sam Davis (G3). He rated in midpack before launching a good rally for third, outfinishing fourth-placer Classic Legacy, who faced similar circumstances and will be much shorter odds than Classic Car Wash in the Tampa Bay Derby. Classic Car Wash will benefit greatly from the experience and has been overlooked in the aftermath. If the Mark Casse trainee establishes decent early positioning Saturday, Classic Car Wash appears more than capable of challenging for another top three finish.

VH: #6 Navy Goat (6-1) is a filly I'll be using in exotics plans in the Florida Oaks (G3) at Tampa. The Arnaud Delacour trainee adds Lasix here and exits a third-place finish in the Ginger Brew S., a race in which she didn't exactly trip out well. Off a beat slow, she was short of room between rivals when attempting to launch a bid in upper stretch. By the time she got in the clear, others had gotten the jump on her. The Delacour/Daniel Centeno combo is obviously a potent one at this track, and the price should be fair.

AA: One of the top older dirt females, Clairiere, and 2022 Kentucky Oaks (G1) hero Secret Oath each make their seasonal debuts in the Azeri (G2) at Oaklawn on Saturday. As a four-year-old last year, Clairiere won the Ogden Phipps (G1) and Shuvee (G2), then lost to Malathaat in both the Personal Ensign (G1) and Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1). The Steve Asmussen pupil is the one to beat at 6-5 odds on the morning line, but I'm intrigued by another runner in the field, #5 Interstatedaydream (3-1) for Brad Cox. The four-year-old will return from a more than six-month layoff and put in a number of sharp workouts leading up to the Azeri.

Interstatedaydream failed as the favorite last out when finishing second in the one-mile and 40-yard Cathryn Sophia S., but two back she triumphed by 2 1/4 lengths at today's distance in the Indiana Oaks (G3). Hot jockey Florent Geroux will retain the mount, and with the right pace setup, Interstatedaydream can pull off a slight upset over late-running types Clairiere and Secret Oath.

                            #43
Tampa Bay Downs All-Stakes Late Pick 5 for March 11p
                            Ashley Anderson

Tampa Bay Downs will feature the lone Kentucky Derby (G1) prep race this weekend with points on a scale of 50-20-15-10-5 available to the top five finishers in the $400,000 Tampa Bay Derby (G3).

The 1 1/16-mile event for three-year-olds is the penultimate race on Tampa Bay Downs’ 12-race Saturday card.

Below we offer our top picks for the Tampa Bay Derby, along with the other four stakes races on the undercard, and provide an All-Stakes Late Pick 5 ticket.

                            $1 Pick 5 ticket: 1, 3, 5, 10 with 2 with 3, 6 with 3, 10 with 6, 12 ($32)
Bet Tampa Bay Downs live racing here
Race 7: Columbia S., one mile (turf), three-year-olds

Arguably the most wide-open leg in the Pick 5 sequence is the opening race, which drew a field of 10, including two Triple Crown-nominated three-year-olds. Deep closer #1 Freedom Trail (3-1) was named the morning line favorite for John Terranova, a 29% winner this meet, in the Collected colt’s return to turf.

Last out, he finished 3 1/2 lengths in eighth to Instant Coffee in the Kentucky Jockey Club (G2), where Freedom Trail was prominent from the start, moved up three-wide to offer his bid near the quarter pole and weakened slightly while under Florent Geroux. Irad Ortiz Jr. will hop back in the saddle and is 2-for-2 with the colt while racing at 1 1/16 miles on turf. Both times, Freedom Trail rallied in the stretch to get up by a head in a $95,000 maiden special weight and to win by three-quarters of a length in the Awad S.

He'll add Lasix for the first time here and is too risky to fade in his return to turf.

But we’ll spread four-deep here and add #5 Lights of Broadway (6-1), who drops in class after finishing a distant seventh in the Kitten’s Joy (G3) at Gulfstream. He will add Lasix for the first time, a 19% winning move for trainer Mark Casse. #3 Western Yarn (12-1) is an interesting longshot, who wired a one-mile allowance optional claimer while adding Lasix for the first time last out and is 2-for-2 at today's distance.

We’ll also include #10 Talk of the Nation (4-1), who romped to a four-length win in a 1 1/16-mile allowance optional claimer at this track while recording an 89 Brisnet Speed rating, the highest last race Speed figure among the field. The Quality Road colt will make his second start on grass for trainer Shug McGaughey, a 38% winner this meet. Hot jockey Samy Camacho will retain the mount, and he’s 3-for-5 paired with McGaughey over the last two months.

                            Race 8: Challenger S. (G3), 1 1/16 miles, four-year-olds and up

The second leg of the Pick 5 is where many bettors are likely to either single #2 Skippylongstocking (8-5) or take a stand against him with a horse like #4 Classic Causeway (9-2) and/or #7 Tax (4-1). Skippylongstocking last came home 9 3/4 lengths in seventh to Art Collector in the Pegasus World Cup (G1) on Jan. 28, but he will cut back to 1 1/16 miles, a distance from which he won two back while posting a 103 Brisnet Speed rating, the second best Speed figure at today's distance among the field.

Trainer Saffie Joseph is a 36% winner at Tampa Bay and a 22% winner with horses making their third start off a layoff. Irad Ortiz Jr. will stick with the four-year-old Exaggerator colt, who is 1-for-2 at today's distance. The inside post could pose a problem, but the former Triple Crown runner is still a worthy single.

Classic Causeway may scratch on Saturday, as trainer Kenny McPeek has stated that he might keep the four-year-old in training at Fair Grounds and run in the Essex at Oaklawn instead. Classic Causeway breezed five furlongs at Fair Grounds on Friday, so a scratch for Saturday's race is likely.

That leaves Tax as the other prime win contender. The seven-year-old is 3-for-3 from today's distance with a career-best 105 BRIS figure. Paco Lopez (5-for-12 at Tampa Bay) will pick up the mount in Tax's first start at Tampa Bay, and the gelding has posted a number of sharp workouts since finishing a distant ninth on turf in a one-mile allowance optional claimer. However, his last two races on dirt, he's tired to finish 5 3/4 lengths in second in the Bucks County S. and a distant eighth in the Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1).

Let's side with Skippylongstocking, who has four-time Eclipse Award-winning jockey Ortiz in the saddle.
Race 9: Hillsborough S. (G2), 1 1/8 miles (turf), fillies and mares four years old and up

Chad Brown has three of the seven entries in the Hillsborough, but #6 Shantisara (2-1) is the one to beat after coming home 1 1/2 lengths in second in the 1 1/16-mile Pegasus World Cup Filly and Mare Turf (G3). The Irish-bred showed good late kick, posting a 115 Late Pace figure when rallying to finish second and can improve with the added distance. Irad Ortiz Jr. is named to ride, and Shantisara is 2-for-2 from today's distance.

We'll play her with closer #3 Temple City Terror (6-1), who's won back-to-back at 1 1/2 miles and 1 3/8 miles in a pair of Grade 3 events.
                            Race 10: Florida Oaks (G3), 1 1/16 miles, three-year-old fillies

#10 Free Look (2-1) opened as the morning line favorite in an overflow field of 14, with two also-eligibles. The Tapit filly was last seen finishing five lengths in fifth to Meditate in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1) after placing second by three-quarters of a length in the Miss Grillo (G2) at Aqueduct. Her two most recent Speed figures (92 and 86) are two of the top Speed figures on turf among the field, and the three-year-old will add Lasix for the first time, a winning move 23% of the time for Brown.

Free Look's main competition should come from #3 Alpha Bella (9-2), who was three-quarters of a length in second in the Sweetest Chant (G3) last out over a track labeled good. We'll play both in the penultimate leg.
                            Race 11: Tampa Bay Derby (G3), 1 1/16 miles, three-year-olds

#6 Tapit Trice (8-5) was a dominant eight-length winner of an allowance optional claimer at Gulfstream on Feb. 4 and will move up in class in his fourth career start for Todd Pletcher, a 24% winner with horses that won their last race. The Tapit colt flashed a 99 BRIS figure in the victory, good for the highest last race Speed rating among the field, and the gray three-year-old has posted a pair of bullet workouts ahead of this event. Luis Saez will stay in the saddle and strikes at a 20% rate with routes.

We'll back the Triple Crown-nominated three-year-old but also swing big with longshot #12 Prairie Hawk (20-1), who endured a troubled trip in the Sam F. Davis (G3) against a number of today's race rivals when breaking from post 2. Now drawing the outside post, Prairie Hawk can bounce back at Tampa Bay, where he's 2-for-3. Two back, he wired a one-mile and 40-yard allowance optional claimer while under Camacho, who will remain with the Curlin three-year-old.
