Mar 23 Bryan Power 4% [CBB] (637) Michigan State at (638) Kansas State

      Time: 6:30 PM EDT
      Michigan State -130
Analysis: 4% Michigan State ML (6:30 ET): If you were following along last weekend, this play probably shouldn’t surprise you. I faded Kansas State against Kentucky (wrong!) but backed Michigan State over Marquette (correct!) MSU winning outright, 69-60, to me, was very impressive. That was only Marquette’s second loss of the year by more than five points and Sparty did it while shooting just 2 for 17 from three-point range (Meanwhile, Marquette was 11 of 27!).
At the same time, Kansas State benefited from Kentucky going 4 for 20 on 3PA in its second-round win. ShotQuality data (if you’re into that sort of thing) said the Wildcats’ 75-69 win “should have” been a four-point loss and I tend to agree with that assessment. If Markquis Nowell doesn’t hit a couple of “moon shots,” then Kansas State certainly wouldn’t still be alive in this Tournament. Even though they themselves have gone a combined 9 of 36 from three-point range, K-State has definitely benefited from shooting variance in each of its two tournament games thus far, The Wildcats finished at 58.2% overall against Montana State in the first round as they were 28 of 40 (70%) inside the arc! That’s not going to happen against a Tom Izzo defense that just held Marquette to 9 for 25 on 2PA! (Yes, only NINE made two-point FGs).
For the year, Michigan State is shooting 38.7% from three, which is top eight in the country. They’ve been held below that percentage three straight games, twice by a wide margin. If the Spartans are able to bounce back from three, and I think they will, then Kansas State is in real trouble here. I’ve had KSU rated lower than the market all season and while they proved me wrong last weekend, I’ve had a lot of success going against this team much of the season and so I’ll call for Michigan State to be the team that advances to the Elite Eight here. 4% Michigan State ML (Play to -165)

Mar 23 Bryan Power 4% [CBB] (641) Gonzaga at (642) UCLA

                        Time: 9:45 PM EDT
                        UCLA -125
Analysis: 4% UCLA ML (9:45 ET): Initially, I didn’t think I was going to get to the window on this game. But “upon further review,” UCLA is the play. These teams have played some memorable games through the years. Thursday actually marks 17 years to the day that the Bruins sent Adam Morrison and Gonzaga packing in the NCAA Tournament. More recently, the Zags returned the favor with an incredible Final Four victory two years ago (Jalen Suggs’ buzzer beater) and an 83-63 win here in Vegas on Thanksgiving weekend 2021. Jaime Jaquez Jr and Tyger Campbell are 9-2 in NCAA Tourney games w/ UCLA and this is where they get their revenge for two years ago.
UCLA smoked UNC Asheville 86-53 as a 17.5-point favorite in Round 1 before surviving Northwestern (68-63 as 7.5-point chalk) in Rd 2. Gonzaga has had a similar path, winning by double digits against Grand Canyon (82-70) before having to rally against TCU (84-81). The only difference is the Zags didn’t cover either time and are now 0-7 ATS L7 NCAA Tournament games. I thought Gonzaga played better in the first half vs. TCU than what the score showed, but they definitely can’t afford to fall behind by double digits again here. Also notable is that TCU found itself in foul trouble in the 2H, which certainly played a role in the outcome.
Most people are going to focus on Gonzaga’s top rated offense, led by Drew Timme, against UCLA’s #2 rated defense. But I think the key is actually UCLA’s offense (#21 in efficiency) against what is the “weak link” of this game, Gonzaga’s #75 rated defense. Look for UCLA to get to the rim here. Gonzaga may be on the nation’s longest win streak (11 straight) but UCLA is 14-1 SU L15 w/ the only loss coming by two to Arizona in the Pac 12 Tourney Final. It appears that both David Singleton (ankle) and Adem Bona (shoulder) will be fine for the Bruins, whose defensive edge is too large to ignore. 4% UCLA ML (Play to -150)
