SAVOY - The ROI when Hernandez and Serey team up is terrific. Should do well today. Weight shift of -7 from January 29th race at Laurel. ARISTOCRATIC - A gelding like this one, almost always in the money, usually makes an excellent trifecta key horse. This speed freak is cutting back in distance today. Should promote his chances. Took a big class drop last out, and I think he may have needed it. Allen enters him at a similar level today. I'd expect an improved performance. SUPER GARNER - When this rider and handler team up you have to take a look. Ho and Dunham have been wonderful together. I think that a sprinter coming off a layoff will usually run his best in the 3rd or 4th start back. Dunham moves this horse here to Laurel from Charles Town. Looking at the horse's PPs, he has shown the ability to win at different tracks. Ran a less than stellar race at Charles Town last time around the track. Racing without a sloppy track puts this gelding at the top of my contenders list.

Hasn't finished in the money in a short distance clash in the last couple of months. Not the best of omens.

MANY ROSES - This gelding is in good form. Ran first on February 26th. The return on investment when Vergara and Axmaker get together is tremendous. This one has increased his speed ratings in each of the last two races. That kind of progress is worth taking a look at. STYLISH ELEGANCE - Lopez was aboard this gelding last time around the track and was impressed enough to take the animal right back. This rider and trainer have a profitable return on investment when they unite. This gelding is in good condition. Ran first on March 1st. 38-59-80 are last 3 Equibase speed figures. Improving each time out is something he should do again in this field.

Vulnerable Contenders: #7 DEVIL'S TEETH (ML=3/1), #6 THAT'S BIND BABE (ML=4/1), #1 STONUS MAXIMUS (ML=9/2),

DEVIL'S TEETH - Hard to put any money on this gelding on the win end. Likes to hit the board though. THAT'S BIND BABE - This horse finished out of the money on February 12th and wasn't near the winner in the last race either. STONUS MAXIMUS - Granted the last race was good, finishing second. The lack of any recent activity raises some concerns though. This runner ran a somewhat easily forgotten speed rating last out. He shouldn't show signs of improvement and will probably get beat in today's event running that figure.

Tough Street (#11) figures to go favored as she seeks her third victory in a row and fourth victory in her last five starts. Chad Brown has taken advantage of this filly’s New York-bred conditions in recent months, and now will try this starter allowance as she moves into company. She’s gotten some very savvy rides from Dylan Davis in her last couple of starts, as he’s helped her get the distance by steering her wide on the backstretch, helping her to relax before engaging the competition. She’s drawn well outside again here, but is landing in a tougher spot that features others who want to be forwardly placed. She can win, but I don’t think she’s going to offer value at her expected odds.

The TimeformUS Pace Projector is predicting a fast pace, though the characterization could change slightly with the expected scratch of Mariah’s Fortune (#4), who is entered to run back on Sunday.

Other runners who will seek to be forward early include Mosienko (#8) and Know It All Audrey (#9). Both are a little classier than Tough Street, the former having beaten open allowance foes while the latter placed in a New York-bred stakes. Yet both seemed to be in better form a few months ago, and I’m not confident that their trips will work out.

I prefer some runners who can rally from just off the pace. My top pick is MOVIE MOXY (#6), who might actually be getting class relief as she moves back into starter allowance company. She participated in a strong open company optional claimer last time, and ran on well for third behind her talented stablemate Mommasgottarun. In her prior start, she ran even better than her 6-length margin of victory would suggest, since she hopped up at the start and found herself at the back of the pack before making a mid-race move to take over. I just think she stacks up very favorably against this group from a class standpoint, and the trip could work out well if she breaks alertly.

The other horse that I would use at a bigger price is My First Love (#7). She looks slightly inferior based on recent speed figures, but I can make excuses for her last race when she was going too short and racing against a potential inside bias. Stretching out will help, and she handles a wet track.

The Jury: Bets and fades for March 25

The first of three consecutive monster weekends of racing kicks off with the Dubai World Cup, Louisiana Derby, and Jeff Ruby Steaks cards on Saturday. Here's what stands out to James Scully, Vance Hanson, and Ashley Anderson after perusing those programs.
What is your best bet?

James Scully: #4 Funtastic Again (6-1) in the Jeff Ruby Steaks (G3) at Turfway Park. An impressive wire-to-wire winner in two starts over Turfway’s Tapeta, including a 3 3/4-length decision in the Jan. 21 Leonatus, Funtastic Again drew inside the other speed, and jockey Gerardo Corrales will be hustling the chestnut from the break. He’s eligible to catch a breather on the front end, and I’ll tab the improving colt for leading trainer Wesley Ward.

Vance Hanson: I won't sleep on #3 Gentle Soul (5-1) in the Muniz Memorial (G2) at Fair Grounds. Although the beneficiary of an existent bias favoring closers when taking the Colonel E.R. Bradley S. in January, I thought his follow-up against the classy speed Two Emmys in the Fair Grounds (G3) last out was a good performance, given that rival favorite set a very tepid pace. If Two Emmys is kept a little more honest, perhaps by Pegasus World Cup Turf (G1) winner Atone, I'm hoping Gentle Soul can make a race of it late at a decent price.

Ashley Anderson: #3 Olazabal (7-2) dominated by 11 lengths last out in a six-furlong allowance optional claimer at Turfway while posting a 94 Brisnet Speed rating, the highest last race speed rating among the field in the six-furlong Animal Kingdom S. The Eric Foster trainee will move up in class for his first stakes attempt and will keep rider Gerardo Corrales, who is 3-for-5 with a second-place finish paired up with Foster over the last 14 days. Olazabal is also 2-for-3 at today's track, with his lone loss coming when stretching out to a mile. The Bolt d'Oro colt will vie for the early lead with morning line favorite #4 Eye Witness (2-1), who broke his maiden last out at a mile but posted a Speed figure 11 points slower (80) when sprinting six furlongs on debut at Aqueduct.

Who is the horse to fade?

JS: Several projected favorites appear formidable in the all-stakes Pick 5 at Fair Grounds, but I’ll take a stand against #2 Art Collector (8-5) in the New Orleans Classic (G2). He was able to work out a favorable stalking trip from post 6 when upsetting the Pegasus World Cup (G1) last out, but Art Collector has been compromised in previous starts when unable to make the lead from an inside post. He’s got speed to both sides in the New Orleans Classic starting gate, which makes his task difficult following a career-best performance, and Art Collector may prove vulnerable odds.

VH: The only morning line favorite I'm completely fading from my Bluegrass Bayou Pick 5 is #1 Major Dude (5-2) in the Jeff Ruby (G3) at Turfway Park. There are no major objections to his form (he's a multiple graded winner on turf), but having Todd Pletcher and Irad Ortiz Jr. in his corner is going to depress his price significantly in a race that seems fairly wide open on paper. I'm also partial to better-priced rivals that actually have previous form on synthetic, specifically positive stuff over the Turfway strip.

AA: #9 Santin (3-1) is a vulnerable favorite in the Kentucky Cup Classic, Race 10 on Saturday’s Turfway card. The Distorted Humor son was last seen finishing a non-threatening fourth in the Seabiscuit H. (G2) at Del Mar in November and will make his five-year-old debut here off a layoff of more than three months. The Brendan Walsh trainee has run on turf in 10 career starts and will try all-weather in his debut at Turfway. The 2022 Arlington Million (G1) hero will get a challenge from reigning Kentucky Cup Classic winner #10 King Cause (7-2), who came home 2 3/4 lengths in sixth in the Pegasus World Cup Turf (G1) last out and can improve with a surface switch and some class relief. #8 Ocean Atlantique (6-1) and #5 Wolfie’s Dynaghost (6-1) are also coming off stakes victories and have posted some of the top Speed figures among the field when running on all-weather.

What else is worth noting?

JS: Chris Block leads all Fair Grounds trainers with five turf wins this meet, and he has a top contender in Saturday’s Tom Benson Memorial S., She Can’t Sing, who will make a title defense in the about 1 1/16-mile turf affair. I like the “other Block,” #3 Trail Ridge (12-1), who exits an encouraging third in her open stakes debut, the Feb. 18 Albert Stall Memorial S. Block’s runners improve with age, and the four-year-old daughter of Point of Entry brings progressing turf form into this event. The upset candidate has appeal for the vertical exotic wagers, as well.

VH: Longtime readers will know that #8 Master of the Seas (10-1) is a personal favorite of mine, though I've been unlucky over the past couple of years backing him in spots he's narrowly lost or seen him come through at relatively short odds. In the Dubai Turf (G1) at Meydan on Saturday morning (U.S. time), I'm expecting to get the best price of his career on him. He admittedly might be a cut below these (his infirmity-plagued career having in part hindered his rise to the top), but he encountered a difficult trip in his local prep, the Jebel Hatta (G1), while still managing to get within a half-length of the winner at the finish. A lifetime best is needed, but I won't be caught sleeping at double digits if he happens to produce it.

AA: Leading freshman sire Bolt d'Oro has a chance to add multiple stakes scores to his resume this weekend, with two of his offspring listed as morning line favorites in Kentucky Derby prep races — #2 Instant Coffee (2-1) in the Louisiana Derby (G2) and #1 Major Dude (5-2) in the Jeff Ruby Steaks (G3). But it's a pair of fillies in the Bourbonette Oaks who have my attention. #8 Flashy Gem (4-1) is one of two runners for Brad Cox in the 1 1/8-mile event — the other is morning line favorite #5 Botanical (2-1) — and the three-year-old just won convincingly in her all-weather debut when racing a mile in an allowance optional claimer. Out of a Smart Strike mare, Flashy Gem has the pedigree to relish the stretch-out in distance and can pull off a slight upset of her stablemate.

#4 Thirty Thou Kelvin (20-1) is another Bolt d'Oro baby in the field who's a worthy longshot. The bay filly won last out at a mile and 70 yards when rallying in the stretch to win over Gulfstream's all-weather track. From there, she transferred to the barn of John Terranova, a 23% winner in non-graded stakes, and will make her first start with the trainer while moving up in class. Irad Ortiz Jr. hopped off Thirty Thou Kelvin to ride #2 Bolivie (5-1), but Thirty Thou Kelvin is in capable hands with rider Kazushi Kimura. She'll need her best race to win here, but she's certainly one to play underneath in exotics.

Fair Grounds Race 8: 1 1/16 Mile. (Turf) F.100K Tom Benson Memorial Stakes

#6 Didia (3/1) – This Argentinian superstar is 6/7 on turf and 2/2 at the distance. She’s carried her form to the America, where she’s won twice with a thundering late kick. #1 Adventuring (2/1) will take the most money in this race, but the Conductor is against her at a short price. She’s 0/2 at the distance.
Fair Grounds Race 9: New Orleans Classic Stakes

#5 Rattle N Roll (10/1) – There is plenty of early speed in this race and that should set things nicely for this colt. He became really good last summer and is now making his 1st start as a 4-year-old. He’s working bullets entering today and his Oklahoma Derby win at this distance gives him a chance here. With natural development as a 4-year old, he’s the value in this race the Conductor will key .
Fair Grounds Race 10: 1 1/8 Mile. (Turf) G2 Muniz Memorial Classic Stakes

#7 Another Mystery (6/1) – This race may be a mystery to some, but not the Conductor. This horse was game in defeat last time and the Ductor likes the cutback in distance for him today. #1 Atone (5/2) will be the heavy favorite exiting a Grade 1 victory in the Pegasus, but that was a weak Grade 1 field. With wins at this distance and over this turf course, #7 Another Mystery will be flying down the stretch under Prat.
Fair Grounds Race 11: 1 1/16 Mile. F.G2 Fair Grounds Oaks

#1 Southlawn (8/1) – This is the stinkiest betting race of the sequence with only a 5-horse field and 3 mediocre favorites. However, the Ductor will find value like only he can. This filly returned off the bench last time vs allowance company and was dominant in victory. She made an early move on the back stretch and extended her lead in the lane. That race puts her right with this group on speed figures and she’ll be a nice price. If you don’t play her, this race isn’t bettable.

*Gullet Shot of the Day #11 Jace’s Road (12/1) – Throw out this colt’s two races in the slop and he fits right in with this group. He showed talent as a 2-year old and returned at 3 with a strong gate to wire victory over this Fair Grounds dirt surface. There isn’t much early speed in this race and the Conductor sees him getting a favorable trip setting a moderate pace. Cox clearly believes in him despite his poor effort in the slop last time. Its a good sign that Cox runs him here when he has two other contenders in here, including the favorite #2 Instant Coffee (2/1).

COMMENTS: LATE SEPTEMBER is usually well backed by horseplayers and popped to a nice win the last time he returned from a layoff. ALLLNIGHT MOONLIGHT went wire to wire in the last two and neither was very close. He could be hard to catch again today. MOR BIG LEE usually makes up ground at the end of races which should help him the first time he goes long today. I DONT VENMO might be better suited for turn but does carry plenty of late punch and could clean up gimmicks.

Muniz Memorial Classic Stakes – Grade 2 | Purse $300,000 | One Mile and One Eighth on Turf | Four Year Olds and Upward

Main win contenders:

Atone (1) gets the ground saving rail and that allows jockey Luis Saez to go for the lead from the start, as the horse did winning one race before last (on November 10, 2022) or to relax off the pace and rally strongly as he did winning the Grade 1 Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational Stakes on January 28 in his most recent start. Those were two of the best races in his career and that’s saying something about a horse which has won over $1 million on grass while winning six of 19 turf races. Since the Pegasus, Atone put in a very strong five furlong workout, 59.4 and the best of 36 at the distance on the day, before leaving his home base in Florida, which tells us the horse is ready for another “A” effort good enough to win. Back to the pace scenario, or how the race may be run in the early and late stages, I note Two Emmys (6) just led from start to finish in the Grade 3 Fair Grounds Stakes over the course five weeks ago, as the 9 to 5 favorite. Two Emmys may be favored again, so there could be low odds overlay value on Atone, and it is very possible jockey Luis Saez (who has been aboard Atone twice previously, for a win and a second place finish) could be aggressive and deny Two Emmys the early lead it appears he needs to win, or causes Two Emmys to expend a bit too much energy early, allowing Atone to go by late for the win.

Gentle Soul (3) may come in under the radar for many bettors and may offer even better return for a win bet as compared to Atone. Gentle Soul is lightly raced for a six year old, but has a strong record of 5 for 11 including a three for five record in turf routes. He tried routing on turf for the first time in December of 2021 in his seventh career start, winning that race and another the next month before taking a 10 month layoff. Returning in November, he won as if he’d never been away then two later won the Colonel E.R. Bradley Stakes on the Fair Grounds turf with a career-best 105 Equibase Speed Figure. That compares nicely with the 106 and then 109 figures Atone earned in his two most recent races. After the Bradley, Gentle Soul entered a graded stakes for the first time in the Fair Ground Stakes, in which Two Emmys controlled the pace on exceptionally slow fractions from start to finish. Nevertheless, after being crowded back to last at the start and going very wide on the far turn, Gentle Soul rallied best of the race after the eventual winner had drawn clear. This time, if jockey Reylu Gutierrez (who has been aboard for the horse’s last four wins) can stay a bit closer in the early to middle stages of the race, Gentle Soul has potential to post the upset win or at least complete a profitable exacta.

Spooky Channel (5) is an exceptional turf horse who has won 12 of 27 races and even as an eight year old still has the physical and mental ability to compete effectively. He won the Grade 3 Sycamore Stakes in the fall of 2021 but was then on the sidelines for 14 months. Returning to win the Buddy Diliberto Stakes on the Fair Grounds Turf in late December, as if he had never been way, Spooky Channel earned a nearly career-best 112 Equibase Figure certainly good enough to win. Stretching out to a mile and one-half near the end of January for the John B. Connally Stakes in Texas, he made a mid-race move to the lead but could not sustain the bid and ended up third as the even money favorite. Still, Spooky Channel was very game and was only beaten a neck for second and less than one length for the win. Shortening up in distance may be to his advantage, as is the jockey change to Joel Rosario, so he rounds out a trio which appears to have the bulk of the probability to win this race.

Another Mystery (7) and Two Emmys (6) can be used on exacta tickets, mostly in the second position. As mentioned previously Two Emmys won the Fair Grounds Stakes wire-to-wire last month, and now has been first or second in 16 of 24 races. He has won two of his last seven races going back to January 22 and in two of those efforts he stayed on well for a minor award after leading late. Another Mystery was the horse who finished a neck ahead of Spooky Channel in the Connally Stakes last month and who also has a nice late kick on occasion.

Win bets: Atone (1) should be considered for a win bet at odds of 9 to 5 or higher.

Additionally, Gentle Soul (3) can be considered for a win bet, for a smaller amount than on Atone, at odds of 3 to 1 or more. Spooky Channel (5) also has minimum odds of 3 to 1 but I will assume Gentle Soul will have higher odds near post time and would only want to bet one of the two.
