    Grade C=Least preferred or pass
Grade X=probable winner but likely at odds too short to play

    RACE 1: Post: 1:00 PT Grade: B
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 3-Acquired Class
    Backups/savers: 7-Don Corleone

Forecast: Acquired Class makes his first start since his debut as a 2-year-old last May, and while he finished a distant sixth (beaten 11 lengths) he’s very likely much better than the race shows. A first-time Lasix user, a first time gelding, and now in the Peter Miller barn, the son of Cairo Prince returns protected in straight maiden company, entices leading rider Juan Hernandez, and shows a solid, healthy series of San Luis Rey Downs workouts that includes a :59 3/5 five furlong gate drill eight days ago. With More Than Ready on the bottom side of his pedigree, he should enjoy the switch to grass, so at 4-1 on the morning line he’s worth a gamble. The “other” Miller entrant, Don Corleone, brought $1.2 million at the OBS March sale last year but hasn’t looked like anything close to that in his first two starts. He’s another bred for grass (More Than Ready again) and has plenty of early speed, so with a recent race under his belt, the change in surface, and the shortening in trip he has every right to display considerable improvement, especially if she can clear the field during the opening furlong. We’ll try to get by in rolling exotic play using just these two, with preference on top to Acquired Class.

    RACE 2: Post: 1:29 PT Grade: C+
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 1-Strike That; 3-Butkus
    Backups/savers: none.

Forecast: When last seen 11 months ago Strike That was finishing a respectable third behind Brickyard Ride in the Kona Gold Stakes after having previously been claimed for $80,000. He returns today in a $16,000 claimer, so obviously all his not right with the son of Biondetti, but if he has one good race left he should be able to easily outrun this field. At 8/5 on the morning line, though, he offers a poor gamble. Butkus annihilated a restricted (nw-2) $20,000 field by more than five widening lengths last time out and a repeat that effort today makes him the one to fear most. Today’s extra furlong certainly shouldn’t hurt this late-running sprinter, so while he’s nowhere near as fast as Strike That on pure ability he certainly is easier to trust. We’ll include both in our rolling exotics in a race that might otherwise be best left alone.

    RACE 3: Post: 1:59 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 3-Pammy’s Ready; 2-Unbridled Mary
    Backups/savers: none.

Forecast: Pammy’s Ready has been away since November but she has a history of firing fresh and returns in a second level allowance turf sprint that fits her perfectly. The Peter Miller-trained daughter of More Than Ready can handle any distance but may be most comfortable around one turn, and in a race lacking in pace she projects to on or near the lead throughout. The barn’s “go-to” rider Ramon Vasquez, who was aboard when she missed in a photo at 20-1 in the Unzip Me Stakes last fall, returns to ride the genuine and consistent filly who is listed as the second choice at 9/5. Unbridled Mary defeated Pammy’s Ready in a photo when they squared off in a maiden turf sprint at Del Mar in November of 2021, is she’s the one she’ll have to hold off again. A prototype late-running sprinter, the John Sadler-trained daughter of Maclean’s Music will have to rally against the grain today and without the necessary help up front her task won’t be easy. Both should be included in rolling exotic play, with preference on top – due the projected pace flow – to Pammy’s Ready.

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________

    RACE 4: Post: 2:30 PT Grade: C+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 2-A Little Bit Crazy; 3-Sugar Sugar
    Backups/Savers: none

Forecast: Bottom rung ($20,000) maiden claiming fillies and mares meet over a mile on the main track in a race in which the main players aren’t trustworthy. Sugar Sugar has hit the board in four of her last six starts, so eventually (maybe today) she should be able to find a field she can beat, but she’s already had 13 starts and clearly lacks a winning punch. You have to use her somewhere on your ticket along with our top shaky top pick, A Little Bit Crazy, still a maiden after nine starts but dropping to this level for the first time and with speed figures that are more than good enough to handle this bunch. Our best advice is to tread lightly.

    __________________________________________________ ___________________________
    __________________________________________________ ____________________________

    RACE 5: Post: 3:03 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 2-Elegance Code
    Backups/savers: none

Forecast: This race is borderline inscrutable, so rolling exotic players can either buy the race or zero in on a single and hope to be right. Elegance Code, making her third start off a layoff, was wide throughout from her outside (seven of seven) post position in a similar turf mile for older state-bred fillies and mares and under the circumstance didn’t do badly when weakening late to wind up fourth, beaten less than two lengths. She’s much better drawn today (in the two-hole) and projects to be on or near the lead throughout while saving valuable ground. Lightly raced with only four career starts but with only a modest amount of ability, she probably has more room for improvement than most of the others, so at 3-1 on the morning line she’s our top pick in a race in which nothing would surprise us.

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
    __________________________________________________ ____________________________

    RACE 6: Post: 3:35 PT Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 2-Cornelia Fort; 1-She’s Reliant
    Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Cornelia Fort looked pretty good graduating in a maiden $50,000 affair earlier this meeting and is wheeled back protected by new trainer John Sadler, who may have made a timely claim and could very well receive a quick return on investment. The daughter of Grazen earned a solid speed figure in victory and likely has further improvement ln her. With Juan Hernandez staying aboard, she appears pretty solid as the 2-1 morning line favorite. We’ll also include on our ticket the Golden Gate Fields debut maiden $25,000 winner She’s Reliant, who was shipped north after training at San Luis Rey Downs to wire the field in visually pleasing style. She actually earned a faster speed figure than Cornelia Fort but did so over a synthetic surface. Today she will be asked to try tougher foes over conventional dirt from an inside draw, but if she leaves running she is certain to be part of the pace. We’ll give Cornelia Fort the edge on top but have tickets using both in our rolling exotics.

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
    __________________________________________________ ____________________________

    RACE 7: Post: 4:07 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 4-Teena Ella; 1-Manhattan Jungle
    Backups/savers:

Forecast: Manhattan Jungle just won the Sweet Life Stakes over this course and distance and returns under similar conditions in this listed stakes for sophomore fillies. Though the rail post is traditionally not where you’d prefer to leave from in these slalom events, the draw shouldn’t have any impact in a race that drew just six starters. The Irish-bred filly likes to settle early and blast home; the only concern is a lack of pace that makes her style somewhat problematic. Teena Ella appears to have found a home on grass, so though her dam (Beholder) certainly did her best work on dirt. Nonetheless, this daughter War Front improved big time when switched to the lawn in her third career start to record an impressive maiden tally over the flat course and should be just as effective down the hill. On pure numbers she’s right there with ‘Jungle and a strong case can be made that she has more room for improvement. Both should be included in rolling exotic play; due to price considerations we’ll press using Teena Ella on top.

    __________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ ____________________

    RACE 8: Post: 4:39 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 4-Ladywearsthering; 2-Kristi’s Tiger; 5-Scatchmejamin
    Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Here’s a fairly competitive first level allowance main track sprint for fillies and mares that requires some coverage in rolling exotic play. We’ll go three deep and hope that’s sufficient. Ladywearsthering has done most of her training over the Golden Gate Fields Tapeta surface while preparing for her California debut after compiling a decent record while racing exclusively on grass at Woodbine last year. How she’ll handle dirt is anybody’s guess, but her pedigree (Uncle Mo x Speightstown) strongly suggests that this should be her preferred surface. Her form as a 3-year-old north of the border was up-and-down but her best race (with her best figure) was her maiden debut win, so at least we know she can fire fresh. Top rider Juan Hernandez gets the call from John Sadler. Kristi’s Tiger was almost four lengths clear of the rest when a strong runner-up in a at this level in February and a similar try today puts her right there again. First or second in 13 of 27 career starts, the daughter of Smiling Tiger is a bit shy in the speed figure department but should make her presence felt, nonetheless. Scatchmejamin graduated in good style from a moderate state-bred field last time out, and while she didn’t run particularly fast, she did display a bit of moxie in victory. Much better may be needed today, so the best we can do is toss her in as a backup.

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
    __________________________________________________ ____________________________

    RACE 9: Post: 5:11 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 2-Shadow Creek; 10-Upright
    Backups/savers: none

Forecast: We’re not keen on the two main contenders (The Key Is Unity, Thirty Four Coupe) exiting the race won by Big Flint, so let’s look elsewhere in this wide open grass grab bag for older maiden claiming milers. Shadow Creek raced in traffic much of the way and was never able to mount a rally when unplaced in a much stronger maiden special weight affair earlier this meeting. This substantial class drop into the maiden $$50,000 ranks could make a huge difference along with the addition of blinkers, so at 8-1 on the morning line the Irish-bred son of Gleneagles has a chance to improve considerably and register an upset. Upright had similar traffic woes when making his debut sprinting on the lawn at this level in January. The son of Lemon Drop Kid has more early speed than he was able to show in that race, so we wouldn’t be surprised to see him forwardly placed at this distance. With the switch to leading rider Juan Hernandez, the Mike Puype-trained gelding certainly is worth strong consideration under these conditions, so at 6-1 on the morning line we’ll make him a “must use.”

Al Cimaglia: Northfield Park Late Pick 4 Analysis

      March 26, 2023 | By Al Cimaglia
Northfield Park has a 15-race card with the features rolling in Race 5 and Race 6, an Open Handicap Trot and Open Handicap Pace both with a $19,000 purse. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 11. The sequence has a $10,000 guaranteed pool with a low 14% takeout, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

      Race 11

2-Kneedeep N Custard (5/2)-Comes out of the same race as the one below and was hung the mile but this time starts inside. Grinded on the outside until the 3/4 pole and then gave up the ghost. Gets Myers back and that could be a difference maker. The last time he steered (3-12) it led to a picture versus this kind.
6-Almanac (9/2)-Worked hard to get the lead from a 4/5 shot who came out of the pocket to win. Davis Jr may work a less taxing trip this time and should be on the point or behind the one above. The price could be right, did set some quick fractions in last finishing a close 3rd and was off 3 weeks between starts.

      Race 12

2-Keystone Catalyst (12-1)-Has won at this level on 1-17 and should have enough gate speed to get a good early seat. With a sharp steer from Myers and some lively fractions the 5-year-old can roll by down the lane at a price.
5-Somebeach Baron (8/5)-This will be a single on many tickets and could be an odds on choice. Will respect connections and this is a soft spot but will still use two in this leg.

      Race 13

3-Freedom Warrior (2-1)-Went off at 5-1 and was driven like he was the best and it was true. Got the point right after the 1/4 pole, was pressured, set hot fractions and sealed the deal nicely in 151.4. Could stay good for a repeat and has won 4 of 12 at Nfld.
4-Quality Closer (4-1)-This veteran was a 9-time winner in 2022 and has enough gate speed to land in the pocket behind the one above. Can compete with this kind and might trip out.

      Race 14

1-Perlucky (5/2)-Hasn't raced since 3-12, takes a significant drop-in class and fits better here. Should be on the point after the wings fold if dialed on high and may not look back.
6-Mac Deeno (10-1)-Landed 4th on the rail off the gate after leaving from post 8 last week. Got hemmed in on the rail and with a better trip it may have been picture time. Looking for the price shot to be in striking range at the top of the lane.

      $1.00 Late Pick 4

        Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

        Fair Grounds - Race #1
#3 The Three Ks He has a little proving to do here on class, but he is probably quick enough to be right up on the splits while turning back, and I think sprinting is his best game right now. Bankroll builder for the day?
#4 Northernreflection He can occasionally finish with some energy, and he woke up when dropping out of allowance company last time around. Think something similar keeps him in the mix today.
#7 Bankroll He has some ability to relax just a touch and spy the pace, and that might leave him in a really great spot behind the top choice early on. Capable.
Race Summary The Three Ks has some upside while getting back around one turn, as his two sprint tries here earlier this season were both solid. I'd be happy with something like the 9/2 ML price.
        Fair Grounds - Race #11
#1 Ocean City He caught a toughie in the debut run, but he's got some room to come forward while getting around two turns on the grass. Hoping he can flash a little pace and find a cozy spot near the top.
#2 Charging He makes a lot of sense for a top team, and he's likely to show some pace along with the rail runner while getting around two turns. Could easily see those two playing cat and mouse on the backstretch. Runner-up from his debut try came back to drill a maiden group going long in the follow up.
#5 Fujin He ran okay in both career starts so far, and I like the rider move to BJH here at this two-turn turf trip. Would want him on the tickets.
Race Summary Ocean City and Charging both stretch out on the turf after showing sprint pace in their respective debuts, but I think Ocean City should be a more attractive price on the board.
        Fair Grounds - Race #15
#1 A G's Charlotte She has to turn some tables out of her recent races, but she has generally been competitive with this kind, and I think she's got the right style to pick them up late in a race with several potential forward players signed on.
#7 Nosilverspoonhere She steps up after landing a couple statebred races by more than 25 lengths combined, and she should be in a great spot right near the top. A bit concerned about the potential race shape here, but I think she might be able to relax enough to capitalize. Wouldn't be mad to see Corey land the season finale in the race named for his late wife.
#8 Fort Polk She's not out of the question here from off the pace, but her form might be a touch better on the grass right now than it is on the dirt. Wouldn't be a surprise.
Race Summary A G's Charlotte might work out a nice trip saving ground from the fence, as she's got five potential pace players lined up in the six stalls to her outside, so I'm hoping a patient ride from off the splits will land this.

              # 2 LEXINGTON HUMOR 3/1
              # 6 FAIRY TALE BLISS 4/1
              # 1 GYPSY WIFE 7/2
LEXINGTON HUMOR is the strongest bet in this race. Her 89 average has this filly with among the top Equibase Speed Figures in this competition. Earnings per start at the distance/surface is a very good angle. This one ranks at the top in this lot. Must be given consideration based on the competitive speed figure put up in the last contest. FAIRY TALE BLISS - Recent figs for the jockey - 16 win percent - make this mare stand out in this field. Could best this group based on the speed fig - 93 - of her last contest. GYPSY WIFE - Ought to be carefully examined - I like the figures from the last competition. Like the finishing positions in the last couple of races.

                Hawthorne - Race #6 - Post: 4:45pm - Maiden Special - 5.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $30,000 Class Rating: 73

                Rating:

#7 DASH TO THE CASH (ML=5/2)

DASH TO THE CASH - Have to make this gelding a contender; he comes off a solid race on Mar 9th. Jockey jumped on this gelding's back for the first time on March 9th. Should know the animal even better this time. This animal brings in a lot of money per start. Uppermost in this race.

Vulnerable Contenders: #8 SMOOTH ATTACK (ML=4/1), #3 INSIDE THE CIRCLE (ML=9/2), #6 SILVER CHILLER (ML=5/1),

SMOOTH ATTACK - This gelding hasn't had any recent favorable outcomes in short distance contests. Not easy to play him in this race. This gelding showed very liitle last time out. INSIDE THE CIRCLE - This mount likes to land in the top three, but doesn't usually win. Don't play in the top spot. Hawthorne is not nice digs to this steed. When looking at today's Equibase class figure, he will have to earn a much better speed rating than last out to vie in this dirt sprint. SILVER CHILLER - Trying to beat this entrant today at the reward of 5/1.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - DASH TO THE CASH - Comparing last speed ratings in this field, nobody beats this gelding. Tops in the field with a last speed rating of 66 on March 9th.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Putting our cash on #7 DASH TO THE CASH to win. Have to have odds of at least 1/1 or better though

                  # 5 POTENTE ALBA 3/1
                  # 1 EPIC DRAMA 5/2
                  # 2 ELUSIVE VIRTUE 7/2
POTENTE ALBA gets the edge as the wager in here. He has a good opportunity in here as conditioner, Uranga, has strong win rate with horses going this distance. Uranga is trying to win with this one by bringing him back so quickly. With a decent 71 speed fig last time out, will definitely be a factor in this competition. EPIC DRAMA - Vaunts reliable Speed Figures on average overall when put alongside the rest of this group of animals. Horses who have been prepared to race at this distance and surface by Aquino have shown strong results lately. ELUSIVE VIRTUE - Handler has solid win rate (20 percent) at this distance and surface. Is a solid choice - given the 68 Equibase Speed Figure from his most recent race.

                    Rating:

                    #3 PAMMY'S READY (ML=9/5)

PAMMY'S READY - This animal has the early speed, and no one may be able to keep up with her.

                    Vulnerable Contenders: #2 UNBRIDLED MARY (ML=8/5), #5 XMAS SURPRISE (ML=3/1), #1 SECRETS TOLD (ML=4/1),

UNBRIDLED MARY - Not likely that the rating she notched on February 20th will be good enough in this event. XMAS SURPRISE - Should have at least hit the board in the last 60 days in a sprint clash to be worth the chance at low odds in a sprint. This mare registered a speed fig in her last event which likely isn't good enough today. SECRETS TOLD - This mare hasn't had any recent accomplishments in sprint events. No picnic to bet on her in this race. Doubtful that the rating she notched on February 20th will be good enough in this clash. You always think this horse has a shot to be victorious, but she fails regularly.

GUEST COMMENTARY: The Turf Man - PAMMY'S READY - Consider this filly in your wagering in this event. This magnificent animal has a top speed number in a sprint on the turf.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #3 PAMMY'S READY to win if we can get at least 1/1 odds

Sunday TimeformUS Highlight Horse: Olympic Dreams can improve again third off the layoff
Posted on March 25, 2023 by David Aragona

                      Aqueduct | Race 9 | Post Time 5:32 p.m. (ET)

For a limited time, try TimeformUS PPs for Free with a Formulator or Classic PPs subscription. Go to PPs

From a TimeformUS Speed Figure perspective, Refuah (#3) is a standout in this field. He has earned numbers ranging from 83 to 91 in his last four starts, and most of his rivals have struggled to ever run that fast. The problem is that he’s shown some aversion to winning races. This 11-start maiden has looked formidable on paper before and disappointed. He’s settled for second at short prices in each of his last two starts, and has been the runner-up in more than half of his career starts. Perhaps he’s just finally found a field he can’t help but defeat, but you’re going to have to swallow a pretty short price on a horse that has let down the bettors before.

Many handicappers will turn to Miracle Mike (#1) as the alternative. After all, he did earn a competitive 91 TimeformUS Speed Figure in his career debut last summer as a 2-year-old. The problem is that he rode a good rail on that occasion, racing over a sloppy track. His two subsequent starts on fast going have been poor, and he was concerningly dull off the layoff last time. He’s now stretching out to a mile for the first time, and distance should suit him. I’m just a little concerned that he’s never going to run back to that debut effort.

My top pick is OLYMPIC DREAMS (#8). This well-bred gelding showed nothing in his lone start last year, which came on turf. Yet he has since returned as an improved horse this year, switching into the barn of Pat Quick and moving to the main track. He showed some signs of life in his January return, overcoming a wide journey to stay on for fourth, 10 lengths behind Refuah. He got a little closer to that rival last time when improving to third at this level, making a mild move on the turn before again staying on best of all in the lane. He may appreciate finally getting on a fast track if the weather dries out by Sunday. He also has a chance to produce his best form yet as he meets a slightly weaker field, and makes his third start off the layoff.

Sunday Seoul & Busan: Race-By-Race Preview (March 26)

There’s no Listed or Graded racing this Sunday but still plenty of action to get stuck into. There are 11 races at Seoul from 10:35 to 18:00 and 6 at Busan from 11:00 to 15:40. Here are the previews:

                        Seoul Race 1: Class 6 (1300M) Special Weight A / KRW 40 Million

Three-year-old maidens in the opener. (5) NONSTOP THUNDER will be the one to beat. She almost led the entire way around on February 18th over 1200M, ultimately being taken down by the favourite in the closing stages. She comes up slightly in trip but draws nicely to be on pace again and this time she can go all the way. (10) AKKAENGI races for the fist time since December when he was an improved 3rd over 1200M. He’ll therefore have to be taken on trust fitness wise but the wide draw shouldn’t be an issue and he can sit behind the early speed and run on. (6) WORLD FASHION came from off the pace for 3rd at this distance on February 25th. The additional half-furlong can suit and if he can continue on the same upward trajectory, he’ll be in the mix here. The form drops off a bit after that although (9) JEONGSANG LUCKY has a 2nd place to her name which gives her the right to be considered here. (8) NANGJU YEOGEOL another potential improver.
Selections (5) Nonstop Thunder (10) Akkaengi (6) World Fashion (9) Jeongsang Lucky
                        Next Best 8, 2
                        Fast Start 5, 8, 9, 12

                        Busan Race 1: Class 6 (1300M) Special Weight A / KRW 40 Million

Three-year-old maiden fillies. (11) MIRACLE ONE has shown steady progress across four starts to date, culminating in a runner-up finish over 1200M on February 3rd in a tight three-way-go on the line. That was the second time in a row that she overcame the widest gate to go close and while the draw does her no favours again, this time she can go one better with an additional half furlong to play with. (10) HAPPY TAEYANG was a much improved 2nd at start number three over 1200M on February 19th when coming from off the pace to run 2nd. She was well back behind a good winner but she is another who may apprentice the slight rise in trip and she can be a danger. (8) ACE GOOD JOB ran 3rd on debut at 1200M on February 24th having barely scraped through a trial. The time was painfully slow, but she beat three of today’s rivals coming from off the pace and she may well pass plenty late again here. (5) SOLEDAD and (2) FLYING DIA others to look out for.
Selections (11) Miracle One (10) Happy Taeyang (8) Ace Good Job (5) Soldedad
                        Next Best 2, 7
                        Fast Start 1, 3, 10, 11

                        Seoul Race 2: Class 6 (1200M) Special Weight A / KRW 25 Million

A weak maiden and it’s hard to go past (5) CLUB D. He only went down by a nose at start three over this distance on February 26th when settling midfield and almost catching the all the way winner. He comes into a better gate today and a similar run surely sees him home on top. (12) NEVER AGAIN has shown definite improvement over his four starts and came home 5th in a fair time at this distance on March 4th. The wide draw may not be too much of an issue as that day he went back and ran on and he can improve once more today. (7) SECRET WANGJA was the longest shot on the board when 3rd over this distance in January in a time faster than any of the others here have managed (albeit on a weekend when the track was playing very quick). He wasn’t much better fancied when 5th of nine over 1300M on February 11th. He will be shorter today and can keep the positive momentum going, probably taking a sit and finishing strongly. (11) TWO ACE and (3) HERO QUEEN other place chances.
Selections (5) Club D (12) Never Again (7) Secret Wangja (11) Two Ace

                        Busan Race 2: Class 6 (1200M) Special Weight A / KRW 25 Million

                        (12) GLOBAL SKY has a couple of 4th place finishes and last time out improved to 2nd place over this distance when sitting handy and running on stopping the clock in a time quicker than of the rest here have achieved for this distance. She draws a touch wider than ideal but with a touch of luck at the start can sit behind the speed and run on. (7) FANTASTIC CHAMP ran once last May and ran well, coming from well off the pace to finish 2nd. He then had a setback and has had forty-three weeks off. He ran at his own pace earlier this month in a trial that was blitzed by Beolmaui Star, who was preparing for next week’s Busan Ilbo Sprint, so we shan’t read too much into that but Seo Seung-un being aboard means he is sure to be very well backed. (11) BAEDARI DOLPUNG was on pace a long way on debut over this distance on March 12th, beating a couple of these in 4th. She is another who may need some luck in the early stages but can be a danger. (2) WORLD POINT and (6) MIRACULUM among others in at least the placing frame.
Selections (12) Global Sky (7) Fantastic Champ (11) Baedari Dolpung (2) World Point
                        Next Best 6, 3
                        Fast Start 4, 5, 11, 12

                        Seoul Race 3: Class 6 (1700M) Special Weight A / KRW 25 Million

                        (1) EUREKA was a beaten favourite on his latest start on February 26th when handy throughout but only finishing 4th – a finish he has achieved on no fewer than six occasions now. Two starts back he beat plenty of these on his way to 2nd place at this distance and from a great draw, today really should be his day. If he does find one (or three) too quick again then it might be (10) EURO GANGJA. He has done it before having been 3rd in that February 26th when he sat midfield and ran on. That was a big uptick in form but in this company there is no reason why he can’t repeat. (5) PURPLE STORM comes up to two turns for the first time having been 2nd and 5th in his latest two, both at 1400M. Both times he has gone right to the back before making up good ground and the additional distance may well suit. (6) HOUYHNHNM and (7) TRES VITE others in the placing hunt.

                        (1) SUCCESS MOCCA has finished no worse than 3rd (a dead heat on debut) in three starts so far. His win came over this distance at class 6 level in January before he was then a close 3rd from a wide draw on his first try at this class on February 17th. He likes to be on pace, so he has a much more favourable draw today, and he may prove hard to hold out. (11) NORTHERN BID was an emphatic winner on debut over 1200M on February 19th stalking the leader early before taking command a long way out. He comes up in class and has the challenge of a wide draw, but with a bit of luck early, he can be on pace and in this a long way. (2) PHANTOM ACE got his maiden win three starts back and has subsequently held his own in two starts at this level, both over 1200M. He can take a sit behind the early speed – of which there should be plenty – and can launch a late challenge here. (9) SKY MOUNTAIN and (8) THUNDER FURY are others to keep safe.

                        (12) ARGO RICH remains a maiden but after finishing 4th on debut, has since run 2nd on three consecutive occasions, most recently at his class over 1300M on February 25th. He as run 2nd from on the pace and from off the pace so the wide draw isn’t too much of a concern and he can go one better today. (10) SAENAE HWANGJE also remains a maiden, in his case after seventeen attempts but on the strength of his latest effort at class and distance on February 26th when he was handy throughout and ran on for 2nd in a good time, he must be right in this. He also has the fastest time among those who have tackled this distance, and he should be close. (4) QUEEN OF BEST has run fairly for 4th and 6th in her latest two. She is another who has posted a quick time for the distance and who can be running on strong at the business end here. (11) WORLD KING MAN and (9) BLUE INDY others in the hunt.

Competitive race. (7) CUTE GUY returned from eight months out on February 24th to run 3rd at this class over 1200M. His win last year came at this trip and he should stripper for the run and can go close here. (10) WONDERFUL ANDOVER had a couple of wobbles over the turn of the year but put those right in a fast trial in February and then a smart 2nd on his return to the races on March 3rd overcoming the same wide draw as today to be a close 2nd at class and distance. Seo Seung-un climbs on and he looks a big danger. (8) RAON THE HARLEY comes up in class and in distance after a narrow win over 1300M on February 24th. He comes down in the weights, he should be on pace, and he can be in this a long way. (3) TAEWANG SINGI was a winner on debut four weeks ago at 1200M. He comes up in class and in distance but carries next to no weight and shouldn’t be overlooked. (2) CHEONMA HASEO among others with at least placing chances.

Fillies and mares only and it’s a competitive race. (11) ARA MOA returned from four months out to run 2nd on her first try at this distance on February 25th. She is yet to win but she should have derived benefit from that outing, and while she comes up in class, in this filly and mare company, she has every chance. (4) MACH BISANG was a winner on debut over this distance on February 26th. The time wasn’t quick but she won handily enough and there is nothing to suggest she can’t go quicker. She remains under a light weight and draws well. Like Ara Moa, (1) TOUCH CHARM comes up in class despite remaining winless. She comes down in weight and from the inside gate, Lee Hyeok can pick his spot and she should be in this a long wat. Among those with experience of this level, (9) ARCH MEMORY and (7) MUSTANG CHARM look the best.

                        (6) BARAMBARAM will be a warm favourite here. An also ran in the Breeders’ Cup for juveniles last November he came back into form when overcoming the widest gate to get on the lead and score by a full thirteen-lengths over a mile on February 24th. He comes up in class and up to two turns here but the manner of that victory suggests that tilt at the Triple Crown races is still possible and he really should win this. (5) HAPPY JAZZ was a winner over this distance at class 5 level two starts back before running 4th on her first try at this level on February 24th when overcoming gate ten to get to a handy position and then run on. She draws better here, remains under a light weight, and can get closer today. She gets a full 5.5kg swing in the weights on (3) ADELE BOSS, who won that February 24th race, sitting on pace throughout. The weight aside, he draws well and can’t be dismissed here. Another last start winner who is up in the weights is (4) SORI TAEPUNG, who made all on March 3rd. He draws well and surely leads again. (11) LINE BREAKER another in the minor money frame.

                        (9) COMPLETE FORCE will be the one to beat here. He has only raced four times with his win coming over 1000M, but e enters here off a 3rd place at class and distance in a fast race on January 14th. He has had ten weeks off since, so he comes in fresh and he should be too good. The main danger is (7) UNJUUI BOM. That’s based on her latest effort on March 4th when a close 2nd at class and distance when racing handy and running on only to go down narrowly. She was the longest shot on the board that day but warrants far more respect this time around. Recent form falls off a bit after that (11) YESULIYA could be a wild card. He returns to action a full forty weeks after we last saw him but he looked well enough when trialling up in mid-February. He can go well first-up in this company. (3) GREEN SHIELD was a winner at class 6 level in January before struggling on her first try at this class over 1300M on February 26th. She draws nicely here and in this modest company is worth another chance (12) SPRING WATER another who needs his latest forgiven.

                        (9) JESSIEUI KKUM struck over 2200M to get his first class 1 victory on January 29th beating both Flat Babe and Tuhonui Banseok, who both went on to beat Winner’s Man when the former of them won in February. A winner of six from thirteen, he remains very nicely treated under today’s conditions and he can win again. (5) DOCTOR TAKE comes up in class but down in the weights after a good runner-up finish over this distance on March 5th. He has had experience in level before, with a 3rd and 5th in December and January when running out of class and back under a light impost and from a good gate, he can go close. (7) CRAZY CONTI was 4th in that January race behind Tuhonui Banseok before finishing in the same position over 1800M on February 26th. He may be ridden a little closer today and can be a danger, (1) MACH TITAN and (8) BLUE POWER among plenty of others with placing chances.

She comes up in class today but there is not much to fear here and while she draws a touch wide, she comes down in the weights and can get to the lead and be competitive again here. (10) NAOL YEONGUNG returned from nine months out to run 5th at class and distance on February 26th, beating a couple of today’s rivals in the process. He should strip fitter for that run and can get closer today. (2) GUEOKMAAL was a class and distance winner on February 5th when coming from well off the pace to score at big odds. She comes up 3kg in the weights here but draws very nicely and shouldn’t be overlooked. (1) TOP CLASS and (11) GLOBAL GOLD among others in the frame.

He won back-to-back races in December and January to get rapidly promoted to this level and then beat a couple of these on his way to 2nd place on February 25th at this class and distance having led almost the entire way around and beaten only a nose by Magic Hour, who got a start in last week’s Listed Sports Seoul Trophy. He won’t need to improve much to win this. (7) RAON THE GOLD ran 3rd behind Powerful Hwaseong in that February 25th race when settling midfield and running on. She has plenty of experience at this level and can go close again. (6) ICE STAR also enters with his recent form reading well and comes back in trip after a good 3rd over a mile last time. He’s posted quick times at this trip and can be a danger. (11) JAY TROSS and (1) HWA SSI BYEOK others not without chances on their day.

                        (10) SAENAE TOWN won the Listed NACF Chairman’s Trophy last November but has since been a beaten favourite in two starts at this class, first when 5th at 1400M and then most recently 4th at 1800M on February 18th. He didn’t run badly in either and he can make it third-time lucky as favourite today. (1) CHEON GUN beat Saenae Town on his way to 3rd place in that February 18th race with a couple of the other of today’s rivals also back in the pack, he doesn’t win out of turn and he carries his fair share of weight but he draws well and he can be in this a long way again. (4) MISS YANGO ran out an impressive class and distance winner on March 4th racing handy throughout. He comes up 3kg in the weights as a result but is in this again. (7) TIZ BAROWS was 4th in last year’s Korean Derby and was the winner of a valuable race over this distance on December 18th. He was a beaten favourite when stepped back to a mile on February 19th, and he certainly carries plenty of weight here, but he can return to winning ways here, possibly from a forward position. (1) BIG YAK has been a revelation in recent outings and was a winner over this distance at class 4 level two starts back before running 3rd at this level on February 5th. He comes up 2kg in the weights but draws the inside gate, which can allow him to be on pace and be a danger again. (9) HATMURI comes up in class having come from well off the pace to score over this distance on January 14th. He has only finished outside the top-three on two occasions, the wide draw shouldn’t be a problem, and he can measure up in this company. (10) GREEN DRAGON is a winner of four from ten and won at this class over 1400M on February 25th. He tackles two turns for the first time and has to contend with an additional 3kg but shouldn’t be ruled out. (12) TIZ BLACK another to look out for.

It’s been more than three years since there was class 1 race over a mile at Seoul but we have two runners here who have 100% records at the distance with the awkward start. (6) JANGSAN LASER looks the one to beat. He made all on his solitary 1600M start at class 3 last summer but enters in excellent form having been 4th in the G1 President’s Cup and then getting a win over 1400M and two runner up finishes at 1200M, including in the Listed Segye Ilbo Trophy. He might be too good here. (3) VICS GO was an on pace winner at this distance at class 2 level in December. He then ran out a solid winner over 1800M on February 25th to get promoted to this level. He comes down a full 5kg in the weights, he draws well here, and he will be a danger. (9) SOUL MERIT needs his latest effort to be forgiven but has plenty of ability and could go well at the mile. (8) HEUNGROK DAEBU is very nicely treat under today’s handicap conditions and beat Soul Merit two starts back when the pair ran 2st and 2nd over 1800M. The up in class and down in weights, as well as very nicely drawn (1) LORD BAN is another to consider in a fiendishly competitive finale.

Sunland Derby Day: All-Stakes Pick 5 Ticket | Sunday, March 26

                              March 24, 2023 | By Dustin Fabian

This weekend’s stakes action is a whirlwind of action and Xpressbet and 1/ST BET your perfect companion on an international betting journey. The action kicks off Saturday morning in the desert of Dubai with the $12M World Cup before whipping back to North America for Triple Crown prep races in Louisiana (Louisiana Derby) and Kentucky (Jeff Ruby Steaks).

Wake up fresh on Sunday with some major cards waiting for you, including a major stakes day at Tampa Bay Downs, a mandatory payout at Golden Gate and a loaded stakes docket at Sunland Park, headlined by the Grade 3 Sunland Derby. The ‘Derby’ is where my focus takes me. Be sure to follow the Xpressbet and 1/ST BET News sections and social media accounts to see picks and analysis for all the top races this weekend.

I’m a sucker for anything labeled ‘All-Stakes,’ so obviously Sunland’s big All-Stakes Pick 5 (Races 6 – 10) jumped off the page. Here’s my attempt to put together a winning ticket.

                              Race 6 (4:43PM ET) // $250K New Mexico Breeders’ Derby // 1 1/16 Miles

State-bred three-year-olds take center stage for a massive $250,000 purse and, as you would expect, a huge field has signed on. As will be a running theme throughout this analysis, conversation must start with the vaunted Todd Fincher barn at Sunland. He leads conditioners at the meet in virtually every category and the top jockeys are all in his employ. He sends out five in here and the barn’s top choice is obviously #2 THRUTHESTORM (7/2). He has won two straight stakes at Sunland and drew inside, which should help him save ground this time. He ran down stablemate #12 STILL IN THE TRAP (4/1) that day and the tables have turned at the post draw, with the latter now marooned outside. Look for a similar dynamic at play this time.

                              Must Use: #2 Thruthestorm (7/2)
Must Consider: #1 Antonios Mark (5/1), #11 Sambas Mark (6/1), #12 Still in the Trap (4/1)

                              Race 7 (5:13PM ET) // $100K Bill Thomas Memorial // 6 1/2 Furlongs

#1 TRUTH SEEKER (2/1) has won three straight at Turf Paradise and 4-of-4 on the dirt since moving to the Rafael Barraza barn last year. He has never raced at Sunland but his form couldn’t be sharper and the only worry is that he likes to rally from waaaay out of it, which is always a bit dangerous. #5 DEAN’S LIST (9/5) is in from Texas for trainer Ray Ashford Jr. and should get the perfect trip. He’ll press the frontrunner(s) from a length or so behind and get a clear advantage over TRUTH SEEKER at the top of the lane. #2 BYE BYE BOBBY (8/1) is a familiar face off a runner-up effort in the Sunland Derby last year.

                              Must Use: #1 Truth Seeker (2/1), #5 Dean’s List (9/5)
Must Consider: #2 Bye Bye Bobby (8/1)

                              Race 8 (5:41PM ET) // $300K Sunland Park Oaks // 1 1/16 Miles

Brace for fireworks as the immovable object and unstoppable force collide as Bob Baffert’s confirmed frontrunner, #4 DOINITTHEHARDWAY (2/1) heads into town to face Todd Fincher’s local speedball, #1 FLYING CONNECTION (9/5). Both horses want to go to the lead, so something’s gotta give…right? I will be curious to see who makes the lead early, but I do give an edge to the Baffert charge, strictly based on having drawn outside her top rival. You’d rather be the hunter than the hunted in pace scenarios like this. Can someone shock them and pick up the pieces from behind? #3 FOOLISH DELIGHT (6/1) and #5 UNA PALABRA (5/1) would be the likeliest two. Each comes in off a victory and should be moving late in the event that the speed folds.

                              Must Use: #4 Doinitthehardway (2/1)
Must Consider: #1 Flying Connection (9/5), #5 Una Palabra (5/1)

                              Race 9 (6:14PM ET) // $100K Harry Henson Handicap // 1 Mile

The Baffert attack continues (and did we mention he brings all-world jockey Flavien Prat to ride?) with #7 EDA (6/5) in the $100K Harry Henson. Se haven’t seen EDA at the races in over a year, but she is far and away the class of this bunch. Her resume includes four stakes wins, including the G1 Starlet and G3 Santa Ysabel. If she runs her top effort, it’s hard to envision an upset. But then you start to wonder. A quality filly like this. Why bring her back at Sunland? And the truth of it is…probably lack of options. Between the G1 Beholder Mile (March 11) and the G1 Santa Maria (April 29), there isn’t anything at Santa Anita that would suit her. And shipping her to the G1 Apple Blossom on April 15 could work – except you run into buzzsaws like Clairiere and Secret Oath there. Nope, this is the right spot and the right filly.

                              Must Use: #7 Eda (6/5)
                              Must Consider: -

                              Race 10 (6:45PM ET) // G3 $600K Sunland Derby // 1 1/8 Miles

Additional Content -> Meet the Sunland Derby Contenders

#6 HARD TO FIGURE (2/1) isn’t Kentucky Derby bound, but he is your Sunland Derby morning line favorite and merits the respect of any horse whose connections names include Baffert, Prat and Pegram. He missed by just a neck in the Grade 3 Robert B. Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita on February 4. #4 HENRY Q (3/1) responded to the barn change to Todd Fincher in a big when when he decimated the field in the Mine That Bird Derby last month by nearly 15-lengths. And you can’t ignore Steve Asmussen’s #1 HOW DID HE DO THAT (9/2). He should be salivating over the added distance and the prospect of a speed duel. Note: #3 FORT BRAGG reportedly will scratch in favor of a Florida Derby trip next Saturday.

Must Use: #1 How Did He Do that (9/2), #4 Henry Q (3/1), #6 Hard to Figure (2/1)
Must Consider: #2 Low Expectations (6/1)
