Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

                      March 31, 2023 | By Al Cimaglia
Yonkers Raceway has a 10-race card featuring older mares in the Blue Chip Matchmaker Series. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 7, and the sequence will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

                      Race 7

2-So Many Roads (4-1)-Doesn't show much in the last line but it was a quick mile, and the winner wired the field from the 8-hole. The 6-year-old has been facing better and this looks like a beatable field. Did attract some interest at the windows on a drop in the last start but might not here.
6-Sports Advisor (20-1)-Not much form in the entire field, not going to use the 2 program chalks, no interest in a short price. So, my choice is a Bucci entry price shot. Brennan has some gate speed to work with and should be forwardly placed. Ships in from M1 and a change of scenery could help.

                      Race 8

5-Incaseyoudidntknow (6-1)-Went off a 21-1 and seemed to only get interested late in the mile but was jammed up by a breaker. Not saying this mare wins the last start if not interfered with but could be better here in the 2nd steer from AMac. It's also the 2nd straight race at Yonkers.
7-Lucky Artist A (7/2)-Left alertly, sat in the pocket behind a rough leader, pulled to get the top and was never truly threatened. The plugs came out at the top of the last turn and had another gear left. Should leave again, follow a similar plan and it could end with another picture.

                      Race 9

2-Village Jade (3-1)-Not a bad effort on 3-17, was hung out on the opening turn and was 1st over around the last turn. The trip took its toll down the lane and now drops. Should be a player but has missed a start.
4-Mike Rose (2-1)-Beaten 2/5 chalk left in a hurry, got the top then relinquished it and faded afterward. Drops, comes out of the same race as the one above and also missed a start. Eight-time winner in 2022 makes its 4th start and is still looking for the 1st win this year.

                      Race 10

4-Gingras Beach (2-1)-Bucci trainee had its last win on 1-31 at YR when dropped to this level. Draws well, and Gingras gets the drive tonight.
6-Real Lucky N (7-1)-Really had nowhere to go in a gapped-out field and a stalled cover flow. Raced well to finish 3rd, the plugs came out late and now gets a positive driver change in Bartlett.

                      $1.00 Late Pick 4

                      2,6/5,7/2,4/4,6
                      Total Bet=$16

Laurel Pick 6 Analysis: Friday, March 31

                        March 31, 2023 | By Frank Carulli
Laurel Park’s Rainbow Pick 6 will feature a $9,616 carryover pool this Friday. The 20-cent wager is worth trying to become the lone ticket holder of the winning sequence. Four of the races are for 3-year-olds that stack up this way:

LRL 3rd race (1:25 EST) --RUN FOR YOUR LIFE debuts with Lasix off a solid work tab for Team Russell. His sire, Bolt D’Oro, was a Grade I winner as a 2-year-old and his offspring are 12-76 in their first start. MASTERWORK re-tries MSW company for a 19-percent claim barn. His sire’s offspring finished in the money in 76 of 187 dirt routes with an average winning distance of 6.7F; his dam was a solid turf sprinter but also stakes-placed at one mile on dirt.

LRL4th race (1:55 EST) --The eight entrants in this allowance are a combined 27/6-8-3 at one mile. Taking no chances as a result and hitting the ‘ALL’ button.

LRL 5th race (2:24 EST) -- SHE’LL MAKE WAVES dueled with the favorite from the far turn to the finish and prevailed for a repeat victory at 6F. She can use her speed well from a favorable post in a bid to remain perfect. BOSSYNESS benefitted from the duel, swung 3-wide at the 1/8th pole and closed with a rush to just miss. She galloped out far in front and should appreciate the added ground. Her entry-mate, GOLDIENESS, could sit a similar trip to her maiden win at this distance in a race that produced three next-out winners.

LRL 6th race (2:52 EST) -- NEVER CHANGE, the beaten favorite in four of his last six starts, settled into a perfect stalking position after the pace setter LOOKIN FOR JUSTICE bumped him at the start, but he still came up short under strong urging from mid-turn to the finish. He’s hard to leave off the ticket but very risky as a solo play, too. Going to include: TOTAL EFFORT, a one-mile maiden breaker at Aqueduct who can use his speed well in this spot; BRONCO MARIA, who rallied into photo-finish view in three of her last six starts at 7F and beyond; and longshot SHADY MUNNI off the claim for a hot barn (23-for-97).

LRL 7th race (3:21 EST) -- DREW’S GOLD has wins at three tracks and distances to start his career. The rivals he defeated are a combined 14/4-3-2 in their next start. He is the field’s lone stakes winner after a 4-1/4-length romp in the $1000,000 Jimmy Winkfield at Aqueduct and he broke in the air in his lone Laurel Park start and ran down NOAH CHANCE, who surrounded that race with two wins by a combined 11 lengths. He is today’s solo play, but if he scratches, use his stablemate, PROVE RIGHT, and the aforementioned NOAH CHANCE as replacements.

LRL 8th race (3:48 EST) -- STRONG FINISH gets Lasix and blinkers in his first start as a gelding, eight months removed from a MSW debut at Aqueduct. He lost by 16 lengths to Lost Ark, who came back to win the $203,000 Sapling Stakes by 7-1/2 lengths and followed with a pair of Grade I appearances. If he doesn’t win, GREAT GOOGLYMOOGLY could save the day. He nestled in a :35.4 workout at Laurel Park February 20 and will look to enhance Phillip Capuano’s 3-for-7 record with first-time starters to launch his career as a trainer. All of Capuano’s debut winners were dismissed at 9-2 odds or less.

                        Suggested 20-cent Ticket
                        LRL 3rd race: 2, 5
                        LRL 4th race: ALL
                        LRL 5th race: 1,7
                        LRL 6th race: 3, 4, 5, 7
                        LRL 7th race: 2
                        LRL 8th race: 3, 8
                        COST: $51.20

                          Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

                          Turfway Park - Race #5
#3 Under One Sky She has been competitive with this type in the past, and her recent form with cheaper makes her pretty appealing here off the claim. Think she's one of many with claims on this.
#6 De Joria She turned in a good first effort over the local surface, but she hasn't taken any big steps forward through her four-race career, so she might not have a ton of upside. Still capable.
#12 Klimt's Muse She's up in class after really turning a corner over the local footing, and I wouldn't be shocked to see her pick up late for a piece of this at a playable price. Let's see if she can class up with these.
Race Summary Under One Sky should be an okay price in this spot while rising in class, but she has just a little bit of versatility that might allow her rider to adapt to however this unfolds early.
                          Turfway Park - Race #8
#8 Hard Rye Guy Finisher had a little success at this sharper trip earlier this season, so the turnback in distance might work in his favor here. Think he's coming out of a pretty good race at this level and stacks up well right back.
#9 Kentucky Cool He has been pretty imposing through three starts here, and he earned the step up to try these off another romp last out. Worry that P H Factor will make things a bit difficult as they both do their best work on the engine.
#1 Elusive Target The barn has been doing pretty consistent work here, and this guy goes second off the layoff after making a little move and flattening a bit late in the comeback run. Capable here with any upside.
Race Summary Hard Rye Guy is capable of something just a bit better here after having some trouble late in that last one, and his baseline form fits well here while cutting back a bit to a trip that might let him finish with a bit more punch.
                          Turfway Park - Race #9
#5 All That She's likely to take some cash, but she's not meeting a whole lot on paper in here while going from a sharp family for a really capable team. Guessing she'll be ready to go.
#12 Dowhateverittakes She's going first time out for connections who haven't been knocking down doors this season, but the barn is decent with similar local types, and she might be able to outrun her odds.
#10 Fogo Island She'll go first out for a team that has connected at 30% with a big positive ROI with these kinds over the last couple years. Get a look at her on the track and tote, but she'd be no surprise at first asking.
Race Summary Not totally thrilled with the limited existing form on paper, so I'm looking to a trio of debuters who all hail from barns who do decent work with these kinds. Dowhateverittakes should be easily the best price of the three, so see if she's giving any clues ahead of this one. Also wouldn't be shocked to see #2 Miss Arlington move forward enough to land a share here.

                            Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

                            Gulfstream Park - Race #2
#4 MISCREANT (5-1) Raced evenly in useful return, goes longer, starts for new connections.
#6 NEVER BEEN WRONG (4-1) Troubled second in lone turf start, winner repeated for $35k.
#7 GOLDEN BELIEF (3-1) Exits MSW company, rebounded well from dull efforts before.
Race Summary MISCREANT worked forwardly for her seasonal debut off a four-month layoff, couldn’t keep pace with the 3-to-5 winner, but should benefit from that one-mile test. She ran second at this level at Belmont in her grass debut last summer. Play a 4-ALL exacta.
                            Gulfstream Park - Race #3
#5 GAYELETTE (3-1) Piled up the checks, proved versatile in Canada, stepped it up for recent work.
#6 PREEMPTION (8-1) Debuts for Joseph; dam romped in her first start at 14-1 odds.
#3 HOT FOOT SUSIE (6-1) Wore blinkers, raced wide, followed moves of top two finishers at 5F.
Race Summary GAYELETTE finished in the money at five distances after she entered this barn during a winless 3-year-old season. She ran second at 6F on the turf to Secrets Told, who sprung a 40-1 shocker in allowance company at Santa Anita in October. She worked in :47.50 in her final tune-up for this. Bet to win and place.
                            Gulfstream Park - Race #9
#1 DRUM ROLL (5-1) Stepped it up a notch in final gate work for her debut, watch odds.
#10 BEAUTY DESTINY (5-1) Just missed in debut, lacked kick in ‘longshots’ race, enters new barn.
#8 MEGAN MAKIN MONEY (7-2) Blew stretch leads in 4 of last 7 starts, has to carry speed farther.
Race Summary DRUM ROLL debuts for a 30 percent barn with maiden claimers and her dam, Weekend In Malibu (9-27, $159k), won a Maiden Special Weight and allowance sprint in her first three starts. Not crazy about the rail draw but like the latest in a long series of workouts. Bet to win and place.
