Donga Ilbo Trophy Sunday Seoul & Busan: Race-By-Race Preview (April 9)

The first of six Queens’ Tour races across the year will take place at Seoul on Sunday as Raon First heads the field in the Listed Donga Ilbo Trophy. See here for full preview and horse by horse form comments. There are 11 races at Seoul from 10:35 to 18:00 interspersed with 6 at Busan from 11:00 to 15:40. Here are the previews:

    Seoul Race 1: Class 6 (1200M) Special Weight A / KRW 40 Million

Three-year-old maidens in the opener. (7) BEST CLONE will be the warm favourite. Since returning from four months out in January, he has run 5th and 4th in two starts back at 1300M and 1200M, racing on pace both times and stopping the clock faster than any of the others here over this distance. He should be on the speed again today and can go all the way. There is one first-time starter and (2) KING GO TAEYANG will have his backers. He went through a couple of trials, first last August and then last month and while his times weren’t fast, he wasn’t asked to do very much. Moon Se-young will attract plenty to him and from a good draw and against limited opposition, he can put in a bold showing first-up. (6) HWANGGEUMKKOT improved to 4ht at start number two over this distance on March 5th, coming from well off the pace. She can continue to improve here. (1) THIS WEEKEND and (3) BIG BLED others with the potential to get better.
Selections (7) Best Clone (2) King Go Taeyang (6) Hwanggeumkkot (1) This Weekend
    Next Best 3, 5
    Fast Start 1, 3, 4, 7

    Busan Race 1: Class 6 (1200M) Special Weight A / KRW 40 Million

    (9) SPECIALIST has been on an encouraging trajectory, including a very narrow defeat two starts back over 1300M in February when overcoming the widest gate to race handy. He followed up with a fair 4th, again at this trip on March 17th. He comes back slightly in trip, Seo Seung-un climbs aboard, and today can be his day. There is one first-time starter and (10) HWANGU JANGSA is a two-time trial winner in February and March, leading all the way in the most recent and chalking up a quick time. If he can bring that form to the races, he’ll be in this. (7) SUCCESSFUL is optimistically named but has hinted he may be able to live up to it with a 3rd and a 5th in two appearances to date. He can be on pace here and should be going close. (5) HELLO SUNSHINE raced once last October but won a trial last month. Granted there were only four-runners in the heat, but it was a fast one and he draws well here. (6) SEONGSIL CHEONHA, much improved in his latest outing, is another to keep safe.
Selections (9) Specialist (10) Hwangu Jangsa (7) Successful (5) Hello Sunshine
    Next Best 6, 11

Three-year-old maidens. (4) MENI POCKET will start the odds-on favourite locally, based on her last start 2nd at the end of January when on pace throughout. She’s had a couple of months off since then so comes in fresh and from a good draw will take some beating. (7) CHOEGANG NICE has the fastest time among these for the distance. While that is still not especially quick, it was recorded when she ran 3rd coming from off the pace two starts back and she should be running on strong again. (8) LUCKY HONEY has improved with back-to-back 4th places from her latest two, both over this distance and in fair times. She can also be a danger here. (2) AGAPANTHUS and the first-time starter (9) PURPLE SHINHWA are others who can be considered for the places in what isn’t a very strong race.
Selections (4) Meni Pocket (7) Choegang Nice (8) Lucky Honey (2) Agapanthus
    Next Best 9, 6
    Fast Start 2, 3, 4, 8

    Busan Race 2: Class 6 (1300M) Special Weight A / KRW 25 Million

Competitive race but we’ll side with Peter Wolsley’s (2) YEONGGWANGUITOUCH. That’s on the strength of his latest start on March 17th, when th e Tourist colt settled midfield before improving to handy and then running on for 2nd place over 1400M. He carries the same weight, draws well, and can go one better this time. (7) B.K. NUMA has a 2nd and a 3rd from her latest two, both over this distance. She went through a trial last week in which she ran a good 2nd in a good time and so long as she didn’t leaver her race there, she can go close today. (4) DAEHO NARA beat B.K. Numa as the pair ran 2nd and 3rd over this distance in an all-filly race on March 12th. She draws better today and can be a danger. (5) POWER SOUND and (11) WONDERFUL APPEAL among others who can enter the calculations.
    Selections (2) Yeonggwanguitouch (7) B.K. Numa (4) Daeho Nara (5) Power Sound
    Next Best 11, 1
    Fast Start 2, 5, 9, 11

    Seoul Race 3: Class 3 (1300M) Special Weight A / KRW 40 Million

    (4) SARYEONI TYCHE is the one to beat here. She is yet to finish any worse than 4th in three prior appearances and enters off a 2nd place last time out in an all-filly race over 1300M on February 26th. From a good draw, she may well be ridden on the pace here and could well have too much. (6) CHROMITE’s two 3rd places both came over 1000M, but he hasn’t run badly in his two tries at this distance. Moon Se-young climbs aboard this time and he can go close. (5) CUPID CHAMP will need her latest appearance forgiven when she was slowly away from a wide draw, but prior to that was going well with a 2nd and a 3rd among her first three runs. She can be on the speed here from a better gate and can be in this a long way. (2) CHRYSOL SMILE and (10) STAR K others who can be considered for at least the places.
Selections (4) Saryeoni Tyche (6) Chromite (5) Cupid Champ (2) Chrysol Smile
    Next Best 10, 9
    Fast Start 4, 5, 6, 11

    Busan Race 3: Class 5 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

    (1) GOLDEN WAVE will be a hot favourite. She’s yet to finish worse than 3rd in three starts to date, with her in coming over this distance on February 10th at class 6 level when she made all. She almost repeated the trick on her first try at this class over the same distance on March 10th only to be caught in the final furlong and finish 3rd. She carries pretty much the same weight, she draws the same gate, and this time they shouldn’t catch her. The second favourite will be the similarly named (10) GOLDEN POINT. He comes back in trip following two disappointing spins around 1400M, and while he is yet to win, he is head and shoulders over most of these in that he still has scope for improvement. It’s very hard to find any form after those two. (3) ANASTASIA lost her way but is second up following a seven-month absence and could potentially improve. (4) NICE DAY and (2) GLOBAL YEOSIN others who could finish in the money.
Selections (1) Golden Wave (10) Golden Point (3) Anastasia (4) Nice Day
    Next Best 2, 9
    Fast Start 1, 3, 4, 9

    Seoul Race 4: Class 6 (1300M) Special Weight A / KRW 25 Million

    (6) CAMINO comes back in trip after a couple of spins around 1700M the most recent of which saw him run a good 2nd having led almost the entire way around. He ran a good time over this distance on debut and in this company, he should be on pace and potentially leading the entire way. (7) THUNDER BRAVO is yet to finish in the top-two but has only missed out on the top five on one occasion from six starts. He is another who should be on the speed or handy and can aiming for a best finish to date here. (8) CLAIR POWER ran 3rd to Camino’s 2nd when they raced each other at 1700M on March 11th. He has the fastest time of any of those who have tackled the distance before and should be aiming to at least match that here. (1) FOUR ACE and (10) AREUMDAIN SAI are among others in the placing hunt.
Selections (6) Camino (7) Thunder Bravo (8) Clair Power (1) Four Ace
    Next Best 10, 3
    Fast Start 1, 5, 6, 7

    Busan Race 4: Class 5 (1300M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

    (11) GEUMA DEFT got demoted to 2nd in the stewards’ room on debut before putting things right on his second start in January. He came up to this class and distance on March 12th and was beaten into 2nd as favourite having worked hard to lead. He comes up in the weights and doesn’t draw ideally again, but he looks well worth another chance here. The main danger is the only one drawn wider in the shape of (12) HWANGU DAEJANGGUN. That shouldn’t be too much of a problem for hm though as he closed strongly to win on debut over 1200M on March 24th. He comes up in class but down in the weights and he should measure up. The rest will need an uptick in form. (3) DOCTOR PENTAGON was slowly away last start before running on for 6th. He has posted decent times and from a good draw, can sit behind the speed and run on. (1) FASHION FORCE ONE and (7) THUNDER FURY are others who perhaps have a bit more ability than their latest couple suggest.
Selections (11) Geuma Deft (12) Hwangu Daejanggun (3) Doctor Pentagon (1) Fashion Force One
    Next Best 7, 9
    Fast Start 2, 7, 11, 12

    Seoul Race 5: Class 5 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

Fillies (and one mare) only here. (3) URUS QUEEN got her maiden win in fine style over this distance on March 5th when she staked the leader in the early stages before taking command in the final furlong. She comes up in class here and slightly in weight, but she comes into a good gate, and she can repeat. (2) ILDONG BAKSU has raced four times and finished 3rd four times. The most recent of those was her first try at this class over 1300M on March 12th when she led for must of the way around. She should lead again and will surely be in it a long way once more. (1) LADY TAEPUNG Is another who comes up in class following a maiden win on her latest appearance, in her case over this distance on March 11th. Her times have been nothing special so far, but she won that one handily enough and she can be competitive here. (6) ARGO GONGJU and (5) SONGAM ARCHGIRL are others to keep safe.
Selections (3) Urus Queen (2) Ildong Baksu (1) Lady Taepung (6) Argo Gongju
    Next Best 5, 9

    (8) MAHAMERU’s third win had been coming and it duly arrived on February 24th when he settled right back and flashed home from well off the pace to score comfortably over a mile at this class. He comes up a full 4kg in the weights, but he looks ready to tackle two-turns again and he is the one to beat. (10) WONDERFUL WORLD has won over this distance at the lower levels and comes in off a strong 2nd at this class and distance on March 12th when she beat three of these having settled midfield and run on. Given her style, the draw won’t be a problem and she can continue her consistent run of form here. (11) GALLANT WARRIOR returned from five months out to run 2nd to three-year-old Triple Crown contender Speed Young at class and distance on March 3rd. He comes up 2.5kg in the weights here and draws a touch wider than ideal as he likes to get forward, but he can go close. (4) K K WON and (5) CHEONNYEONUIYAKSO among others in the placing hunt.
    Selections (8) Mahameru (10) Wonderful World (11) Gallant Warrior (4) K K Won
    Next Best 5, 1
    Fast Start 4, 6, 9, 11

    Seoul Race 6: Class 5 (1300M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

Competitive race but we’ll go with (1) G MOTION to get back to winning ways. He has had to deal with wide gates in his latest two but comes into a much better one today, as well as coming back in trip. He can sit just off the pace – or even lead – and today could be his day. (9) KKANGDORI enters in good form with a 4th and a 2nd from her latest two, most recently over this distance on March 12th. She barely comes up in weight and should be running on strong again. (10) MAGLE DAY got his maiden win at this distance two starts back before finishing 5th of nine on his first try at this class a month ago. He may need a touch of luck at the start but if he can get forward, he can go better today. (8) HIDDEN BRAIN and (7) FUN CRAZY among others who shouldn’t be completely dismissed.
    Selections (1) G Motion (9) Kkangdori (10) Magle Day (8) Hidden Brain
    Next Best 7, 3
    Fast Start 3, 8, 9, 10

    Busan Race 6: Class 1 (1400M) Handicap / KRW 110 Million

It’s hard to go past (8) HAPPY FEVER here. Having got right back, he ran on swiftly for 4th place over 1200M on March 12th and under an even lighter weight today and with an extra furlong to play with, he’s going to be very difficult to hold out. (5) PRO CONSUL has been on pace in both of his latest appearances at a mile and 1800M before weaking. Under today’s conditions he comes back down in the weights and the drop in trip makes him an interesting prospect here at potentially an each-way price. (7) DOCTOR FASHION and (6) ONNURI JILJU came home 4th and 5th respectively when they raced one another at class and distance back in February. Both should be in the placing frame here. (11) BUSANHANG GALMAEGI is perhaps a bit better than his recent form suggests and can be given another chance, despite the wide draw.
Selections (8) Happy Fever (5) Pro Consul (7) Doctor Fashion (6) Onnuri Jilju
    Next Best 11, 4

    (5) TES GO DAEBO was narrowly beaten in 2nd when sent off as favourite at class and distance on March 11th. He was second up that day having returned from eleven months out in February and this time he can be peaking fitness wise. He is up 2kg in the weights, but he draws well and should have too much. (2) WONDERFUL INDY has won his latest two, most recently at class and distance on March 4th when sitting handy and proving too strong. He comes up a full 4.5kg in the weights but should be equal to the task and from a good draw can go well again. (4) RAON AMERICAN was a class 5 winner over 1300M two starts back before running 2nd on his first try at this class and distance on March 12th when settling midfield and running on. He too comes up slightly in the weights but should be close again. (3) SEONGSIL MONEY doesn’t exactly win out of turn but has a lot of experience at this level and can place in this company. The up in class but down in weight (10) LONDON SKY is another to take note of.
Selections (5) Tes Go Daebo (2) Wonderful Indy (4) Raon American (3) Seongsil Money
    Next Best 10, 6
    Fast Start 1, 2, 4, 9

Seoul Race 8: Class Open (1800M) Donga Ilbo Trophy (Listed

The first leg of the Spring and Summer component of the Queens’ Tour for fillies and mares. (10) RAON FIRST is the best filly or mare in the country having run 3rd in the Korea Sprint and then won the G1 President’s Cup. Those races were at 1200M and 2000M respectively showing her versatility and at her best she should be untouchable here. She does have the tendency to throw in the odd howler though as when she missed the kick on her only start of 2023 so far in the Segye Ilbo Trophy, ultimately finishing 3rd behind worse horses. That opens the door to (3) FLAT BABE, a big improver of late, who comes in having beaten Winner’s Man among others when scoring at Busan at class 1 level over this trip in February. She was getting plenty of weight that day, which she doesn’t benefit from here, but she seems in peak form. (1) SURE WIN is the only one who doesn’t get lumbered with 58kg – by virtue of being the only three-year-old in the race, she just has 52kg on her back. She draws well and has won two of her last three and can step up here. (5) IRON MUSKET and (4) CALM STRONG among other possibles.
Selections (10) Raon First (3) Flat Babe (1) Sure Win (5) Iron Musket
    Next Best 4, 11
    Fast Start 1, 4, 5, 7

    Seoul Race 9: Class 4 (1700M) Special Weight B / KRW 60 Million

This is a tricky race. Without much confidence we’ll side with (7) FAST TRACK to back up his win at this class over 1800M on March 11th when he made all. He doesn’t need to lead although he should be too far away from the pace, and he can win again. He does come up 3kg in the weights though and that could let in the main danger (4) SWEET JUICE BAR. He has posted fast times for the distance and comes in following a solid 3rd place over 1800M on February 26th. He draws well and surely goes close again. (11) MORNING PRINCE had a hard time in the Sports Seoul Classic Trial three weeks ago when slowly away and never making ground. At the start prior to that though he won over this distance at class 5 level and warrants another chance here. (8) NONSTOP GISANG and (6) GLOBAL LUCKY among other money hopes.
Selections (7) Fast Track (4) Sweet Juice Bar (11) Morning Prince (8) Nonstop Gisang
    Next Best 6, 3

    (11) GLOBAL BOBAE came from off the pace to score well at this class over 1200M on February 25th. He has only raced once at this trip before, finishing 5th in a decent time at class 4 level, but his running style suggests that he is ready for another go, and neither the additional 2kg on his back or the wide draw should inconvenience him. (3) MUNHAK STORM comes in off a win over this distance on March 4th when close to the pace all the way. He comes up in class here but drops a full 4.5kg and draws well. He should be in the hunt. We can draw a line through the latest from (8) LAST PUNCH over 1800M. Back down in trip, he should be a very different prospect today. (7) GREAT THUNDER is another up in class but down in weight and may make for some each-way value. (5) GRACE QUEEN another in the frame.
Selections (11) Global Bobae (3) Munhak Storm (8) Last Punch (7) Great Thunder
    Next Best 5, 4
    Fast Start 2, 3, 7, 9

    Seoul Race 11: Class 1 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 110 Million

    (4) RAON TAP MAN is going to be a warm favourite here. He beat most of these when winning at class and distance back in December before running 3rd over 1400M in February when leading until the closing stages. Today’s conditions enable him to carry a light weight and he draws very well to lead all the way again. (2) JANGSAN CLEAR returns to action for the first time in almost eleven months. He was a winner of five from nine before the layoff and looked very well when winning a March trial. This is his first class 1, and he will obviously need the race, but he is nicely weighted and well-drawn, so a bold showing is possible. The weight is a concern for (5) EAST JET but this is the kind of company the former Group winner can be competitive in. (9) CLEAN UP HAPPY and (3) IRON SOCKS others to look out for.
Selections (4) Raon Tap Man (2) Jangsan Clear (5) East Jet (9) Clean Up Happy
    Next Best 3, 1

                RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                # 2 WHEREDOESTHECASHGO 3/1
                # 9 B A CHAMPION 10/1
                # 7 KRIS WHO 4/1
WHEREDOESTHECASHGO is my choice. Has decent speed figs and has to be considered for a bet in this contest. Looks very strong to be on the lead at the first call. With a very good 86 speed rating last time out, will surely be a factor in this race. B A CHAMPION - Has solid speed figures and has to be considered for a bet in this contest. Always good to invest in a trainer with this kind of solid win percentage - 21 percent - at this distance & surface. KRIS WHO - Has very strong Equibase Class Figures relative to this group of horses in this race - worth a look. Looks very good versus this field and will almost certainly be one of the leaders.

                  Santa Anita - Race #11 - Post: 5:00pm - SO - 9.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $40,000 Class Rating: 99

                  Rating:

                  #8 SO I'M TOLD (ML=15/1)
                  #11 CIRCLEOFCHAMPIONS (ML=8/1)
                  #9 DERECHO DANDY (ML=4/1)
                  #3 BIG FLINT (ML=8/1)
                  #6 LOTTERY PICK (ML=6/1)

SO I'M TOLD - Rider jumped on this gelding's back for the first time on March 17th. Should be in touch with the horse even better in today's race. This gelding is in first-rate form right now. Finished second last time out and comes back quickly. CIRCLEOFCHAMPIONS - This horse is in first-rate form right now. Ran fifth last race out and comes back rapidly. This one could be a potential overlay in this event at odds of 8/1. Finished fifth in last race at Santa Anita but was close at the wire. DERECHO DANDY - Owns the highest speed rating on the turf at this distance. BIG FLINT - This rider and trainer's horses have been generating a positive return on investment. LOTTERY PICK - Utilizing this jock/trainer combination is a smart choice.

                  Vulnerable Contenders: #4 AJAAWEED (ML=5/1), #2 HOWBOUTDEMAPPLES (ML=6/1), #1 MITAD DEL MUNDO (ML=6/1),

AJAAWEED - This thoroughbred likes to land in the top three, but doesn't usually finish first. Don't put in the top spot. HOWBOUTDEMAPPLES - Pony ran a great speed fig last out, but that was on the soft turf. MITAD DEL MUNDO - Trying to beat this thoroughbred this time around at the price of 6/1.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Have to go with #8 SO I'M TOLD on the win end if we get at least 5/1 odds

Coast To Coast Pick 5 - Race #2 - Post: 4:07pm - Starter Allowance - 8.3 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $39,000 Class Rating: 102

                    Rating:

                    #8 BROOKLYN STRONG (ML=10/1)
                    #1 JOURNEYMAN (ML=4/1)
                    #4 TAPSASIONAL (ML=9/2)

BROOKLYN STRONG - Lopez rode this horse for the initial time last time out and comes right back this time. This gelding is the longer price of the 'split' entry from the barn of Barboza. He has the highest earnings per start. Give the once over to this thoroughbred. JOURNEYMAN - That recent bullet 100.4 work shows that this gelding is ready for a top race today. This horse is a hot commodity. Claimed in his last two races. TAPSASIONAL - Have to make this gelding a strong challenger; he comes off a good effort on Mar 15th.

                    Vulnerable Contenders: #9 CARROTHERS (ML=7/2), #3 CASHIER CHECK (ML=6/1), #5 CALL CURT (ML=6/1),

CARROTHERS - Hasn't been on the Coast To Coast Pick 5 oval in the last three weeks. Cause for some concern. CASHIER CHECK - Hard to put any money on this horse on the front end. Likes to hit the board though. CALL CURT - If today's race shapes up right, all the early pace horses will force a pretty mean duel early. Too bad this horse is one of those front runners.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Play #8 BROOKLYN STRONG to win if you can get odds of 9/2 or more

                      RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                      # 9 HOLY SECRET 9/2
                      # 7 CYBERICA 4/1
                      # 6 FRAN'S SALSA 3/1
HOLY SECRET looks to be a very good contender. Had one of the most competitive Equibase Speed Figures of this group in her last race. Looks very good for the conditions of this contest today, showing solid figs in dirt sprint races recently. I like the jockey on this mare - decent chance to win the race. FRAN'S SALSA - Earnings per start at the distance/surface is a good angle. This horse ranks at the top in this bunch. Looks to have a decent class edge based on the latest company kept.

Main ticket: (in order of preference): 1-Escape Artist; 5-Nuclear
                        Backups/savers: none.

Forecast: The Sunday opener has two major contenders in this nine furlong maiden turf event and it’ll be surprising if the winner isn’t one or the other. Escape Artist has finished second in both of his starts to date, though his most recent outing was a tad disappointing after the son of Good Magic squandered a perfect trip while unable to make any dent on the loose-on-the-lead winner Genius Jimmy. His number was okay, not great, but the son of Good Magic certainly has plenty of room for improvement. In a race without much early speed, he could make the running and control the proceedings every step of the way. Nuclear displayed a reasonable amount of promise in his sprint debut while staying on gamely under urging to finish a willing third behind next out winner Valiancer before galloping out with good energy. He’s worked solidly since that race, adds blinkers, and stretches out to a nine furlong distance that should be right up his ally. The barn has strong stats with the second time starter angle, so the son of Justify is almost certain to improve. We’ll give Escape Artist the edge on top but include both in rolling exotic play.

                        RACE 2: Post: 12:30 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 6-Lunatic; 2-Big Bell
                        Backups/savers:

Forecast: Lunatic hasn’t been seen in 11 months after being a voided claim but if ready the Peter Miller-trained mare should be more than good enough to handle this restricted (nw-3) $20,000 band of fillies and mares. Her work tab at San Luis Rey Downs seems solid enough, she returns waiver protected, and she attracts top rider Juan Hernandez, so all systems are go. Big Bell is worth including for protection purposes. A $20,000 Steve Knapp claim last month, the daughter of Mr. Big has finished first or second in five of seven career starts over the Arcadia dirt strip with numbers that are par for this level. This abbreviated sprint distance might be a tad sharp for her, but she should be running on well late, nonetheless.

                        RACE 3: Post: 1:00 PT Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): See Through It; 2-Chaos Theory
                        Backups/savers: 4-Maven

Forecast: See Through It had his six race winning streak snapped in a similar starter’s allowance abbreviated grass sprint last month but with better racing luck he certainly would have improved upon his third place finish (beaten less than a length) and probably would have won it. The son of Curlin to Mischief didn’t break well, gave up early position, and then was forced wide while attempting to make up the lost ground but found five eighths too sharp and simply ran out of room. Today, with an extra half furlong to work with and a good inside draw that guarantees a ground-saving trip, the Milton Pineda-trained gelding should have every chance to get back on track. Additionally, he’s reunited with “win rider” Edwin Maldonado, so at 5/2 on the morning line he’ll be offering an acceptable amount of value. Chaos Theory was always outrun in the same race See Though It exits but was shuffled back early and was never in the hunt. With clear sailing today at this longer trip he’ll have a much better chance to repeat his clever win two races back. Maven can be tossed in as a backup. He looks very much like the controlling speed, and if he can shake loose early without undue pressure he may get brave and keep on going.

                        RACE 4: Post: 1:30 PT Grade: C+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 2-Katonah; 6-Finneus
                        Backups/Savers: 5-Hernbree

Forecast: Here’s a difficult allowance optional claimer for older horses at a mile on dirt that requires considerable coverage in rolling exotic play. We’ll use three, but if you find the need to include a few more – maybe even buy the race – go right ahead. Katonah likely will employ gate-to-wire tactics, and while the lightly raced four-year-old is unproven around two turns he could be dangerous if not respected during the early stages. The son of Klimt is a solid fit based on his speed figures and has a pedigree that should allow him to handle two turns, so with two wins from four starts over the local main strip the Doug O’Neill-trained gelding has a legitimate look at 5-1 on the morning line. Finneushas been known to burn money and therefor isn’t one to trust, but he can close well on occasion, and in a race that projects to have good early fractions he must be considered a threat to tag the leaders close home. Second in a similar affair over this track and distance last time out, he retains Juan Hernandez and just earned a career top speed figure, so he’s clearly in good form. Hembree can be included as a saver. This will be his second start off a long layoff after shaking off some of the rust in an abbreviated sprint earlier this meeting. The old pro has finished first or second in 18 of 42 career starts and was a legitimate stakes performer in his younger days.

                        RACE 5: Post: 2:00 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 4-For All Mankind
                        Backups/savers: 6-Whatmakessammyrun

Forecast: For All Mankind was quite the useful handicapper in France last year and earned Timeform ratings that make him a fit at this level, so with a strong series of recent workouts that should have him fit and ready the John Sadler-trained import looks very much like a solid win play in this second level allowance downhill turf dash. He’s a first-time Lasix and first-time gelding, attracts top rider Juan Hernandez, and has shown the ability to win off a layoff in the past, so at 3-1 on the morning line there’s plenty of wagering value available. We’ll also toss in on a ticket or two course specialist Whatmakessammyrun, unplaced in his last pair when facing graded stakes company but likely to snap back to life in this league. A winner of three races over the Santa Anita turf course including the Eddie D. Stakes last fall, the son of We Miss Artie does his best work when held up early and is certain to get the patient ride he requires from regular pilot Joe Bravo.

                        RACE 6: Post: 2:30 PT Grade: C+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 6-Mitico; 5-Savile Road
                        Backups/savers: 3-Conch Daddy

Forecast: This restricted (nw-3) $20,000 claiming sprint for older horses is borderline inscrutable, so tread lightly. Mitico just won a softer $16,000 (nw-2) dash in game style and while he’s up in class today the son of Dialed In a strong on numbers and could easily win right back. In the frame in eight of 14 career starts, the Paula Capestro-trained 4-year-old should be part of the pace, if not on the lead, throughout. Savile Row has seen better days – he was a voided claim for $20,000 last time out – but he has several back numbers that are much better than par for this level so if he can reach back for one of his good ones the Tim Yakteen-trained son of Quality Road will be quite dangerous. The break in the weights with the switch to bug boy Aguilar certainly won’t hurt. Conch Daddy may be the quickest in the field, though he’s always been suspect under pressure. If he can shake loose early in a race without any effective closers, the son of Nyquist may stick around longer than expected.

                        RACE 7: Post: 3:00 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 4-Conclude
                        Backups/savers: 5-Helladic

Forecast: Conclude was highly impressive breaking his maiden over the flat course last month, wiring the field with a stakes quality 96 Beyer speed figure while dominating from gate to wire. He’s hooking much more speed today and may be relegated to a stalker’s role, but the son of Collected is a high quality sort and should be able to score again despite the class hike no matter what the race flow turns out to be. Helladic is the quickest of the bunch and will take them as far as he can. A respectable third in the Baffle Stakes last time out behind next out stakes winner Johannes, the Ryan Hanson-trained son of Kantharos always is a bit suspect under pressure in the final furlong and needs a major upgrade in the speed figure department to challenge our top pick, but he at least he looks best of the rest and is worth including on your ticket as a saver.

                        RACE 8: Post: 3:30 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 7-Austonian; 5-Cowboy Mike
                        Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Austonian, scratched out of a stakes race yesterday for this much more realistic spot, was bet like he couldn’t lose in his debut last month but managed to get himself beat at 3/5 when he couldn’t quite catch Left Hand Man in a fairly strong maiden special weight sprint for California-bred runners. The son of Smiling Tiger didn’t break sharply, and it cost him, but he did finish almost three clear of the rest and seems certain to produce a forward move with that effort under his belt. He remains well regarded and will be tough to beat unless the Bob Baffert-trained newcomer Cowboy Mike verifies his very promising work tab. Another son of Smiling Tiger, this gelding has done everything asked of him and appears to have some real quality, so it’ll be interesting to see which one of them can rise to the occasion. We’ll give Austonian the edge on top because he’s already had an outing, but we’ll have Cowboy Mike on the main ticket, as well.

                        RACE 9: Post: 4:00 PT Grade: C+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 4-Big Beauty; 2-Sensible Move; 10-Dolly May
                        Backups/savers: none.

Forecast: This messy grass grab bag for restricted (nw-2) $32,000 claiming fillies and mares could be won by just about any of 10 entrants, none of whom can be entirely trusted. Spread as deeply as your budget allows. Big Beauty returns to her claim level while stretching out to the distance and course that produced her only victory, so we’re expecting the Sean McCarthy-trained mare to produce one of her better races. She actually hasn’t routed in two years, but her sprint numbers aren’t bad, and she projects to be forwardly placed throughout from a comfortable inside draw. Sensible Move benefitted from a ground-saving trip when second under these conditions last month. Probably most effective when held up early, the daughter of Summer Front is solid on numbers and is in good hands. Dolly May gets the worst of the draw and has been a beaten favorite in two of her last three starts, most recently at odds on. Now in Vladimir Cerin’s barn following a $32,000 claim, the Irish-bred mare retains top jockey Juan Hernandez and can be dangerous if taken back early and allowed to produce one late run. These are the three we’ll be using in our rolling exotics but certainly not with a high degree of confidence.

                        RACE 10: Post: 4:30 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 10-Soul of Midnight
                        Backups/savers: none.

Forecast: After crushing a soft state bred maiden $50,000 field last month in just his second career start while earning a strong speed figure, Soul of Midnight is protected today as expected in this starter’s allowance sprint and looks well-spotted for a repeat score from his cozy outside draw. The son of Straight Fire projects to be quick enough to gain his coveted role as the controlling speed, and in a field void of trustworthy closers the Dean Pederson-trained sophomore seems like a logical and dependable favorite. A strong five furlong breeze (1:00h) last week gives further indication that his best is yet to come, so at 5/2 on the morning line we’ll make him a win play and rolling exotic single.

                        RACE 11: Post: 5:00 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 2-Howboutdemapples; 9-Derecho Dandy; 7-What a Dude
                        Backups/savers: none.

Forecast: The Sunday program concludes with a starter optional claimer over 10 furlongs on grass and is yet another challenging affair that offers several possibilities, many of them at good prices. Howboutdemapples is an intriguing comebacker for the Phil D’Amato/Flavian Prat team. Away for more than a year, the Gulfstream Park shipper returns protected in a sign of confidence and should enjoy a pace-forcing, ground-saving trip while offering good value at 6-1 on the morning line. He’s a little light in the speed figure department but could easily be a much better type this time around for a barn that excels with two-turn grass runners. Derecho Dandy had a tough beat when missing by a head in a similar event over this course and distance earlier this meeting. The effort produced a career top speed figure, one that if repeated today will make him hard to beat. The John Sadler-trained gelding does his best on the front end, so gate-to-wire tactics likely will be attempted. A healthy recent work pattern indicates he’s ready for another major effort. What a Dude, a recent $32,000 claim and with plenty of room to improve, is a deep closer hoping for a hot pace and he just may get it. The son of Hard Spun has numbers that make him a threat so at 8-1 on the morning line he’s worth including on your ticket.

Al Cimaglia: Cal Expo Pick 4 Analysis

                          April 9, 2023 | By Al Cimaglia

Cal Expo has an 11-race card scheduled and the headliners are 4-year-olds battling in California Sires Stakes action. The 0.20 Pick 4 starts in Race 7. The sequence has a $25,000 guaranteed pool with a 16% takeout, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

                          Race 7

6-Mystery Dragon (15-1)-Pulled to go 1st over into a quick pace and tried to challenge the one below who went off at 7/5. That trip didn't work, will look for better here and was Thayer's choice over #8.
7-Unfiltered (6-1)-Beaten chalk was used very hard on the engine and set a quick pace. Faded to finish 3rd, beaten by a length and will look for a less taxing journey at a better price.
8-Dancin Lance (4-1)-Svendsen grabs the lines and that might help. Needs a good steer but tries hard and usually is in the hunt. Has more than 1 move and may need to show that from this post. Willing to fade the 3-1 program chalk #9 who doesn't show a win at this class with better post draws.

                          Race 8

3-Pecorino (15-1)-Price shot needs an efficient trip and could get sucked around. Starts from a good spot to save ground and isn't over his skis with this kind. Pacheco knows how to provide this type of steer.
4-Johnny Ringo (5-1)-Won at 6/5, was used a couple of times and didn't get the usual trip. Could come off cover this time and has enough gate speed to give Thayer choices.
6-Arnie's Army (9/2)-Svendsen chose #5 the program chalk that is not going to be on my ticket, so Mullet gets the steer. Arnie was far back early in last and rallied late. My take is he will be forwardly placed this time and be in striking range turning for the wire.
8-Giggle Monster (15-1)-Faces easier and gets Kennedy between the pipes which could make a difference. Should be a price and does good work at CalX (48-18-10-5). Has a shot in a wide-open race and will hope the chalk performs similar to his last start.

                          Race 9

1-Ellis Gray (7/5)-Faces some older horses and not feeling that will be an issue. Doesn't offer any value at the morning line, is only 1-25 the past 2 years, but looks like a main player versus this crew.
3-Machet Time (4-1)-This is another who doesn't like to win but someone has to and was used hard on the lead in the last mile. Gets Farris back who usually drives, is a better value than the one above and could get a cozy trip.

                          Race 10

5-Outlawburntpopcorn (2-1)-Hopefully some better prices hit in other legs because this looks like a chalky race. Pacheco should get an up-close seat and could make one nice move down the lane.
6-Brooklyn Moonshine (9/5)-Has competed at this level but has yet to take a picture this year. The short field should help and maybe this mare wakes up tonight. Did have 5 wins in 2022 and banked over $50k.

                          0.20 Pick 4

                          6,7,8/3,4,6,8/1,3/5,6
                          Total Bet=$9.60

                            Hawthorne - Race #2
                            Picks Notes
#4 Zandrea's Willing to give her a look in here in a race without any kind of serious pace signed on. Her more recent form isn't anything to look at, but she has generally been in with better and might get the jump on some of the finishers today.
#2 Queen Ekati Her form might be a touch better over the synthetic in Florence, but she's a pretty reliable finisher with a recency edge on the top choice. Wouldn't surprise to see her along late to grab this.
#5 Twelve Red Roses She should appreciate the class relief in this one after failing to get involved with allowance company last out, and she has enough tactical pace to find a good spot early as they sort themselves out.
Race Summary Zandrea's showed a little pace before folding up last out in New Orleans, and I wonder if Emigh might get her into this race early on while not facing a whole lot of other speed.

                            Hawthorne - Race #7
                            Picks Notes
#1 Just a Wonder She returned off the bench with a nice score, and she has sharp pace from the fence in a race without a ton of other committed sprint speed. Think the race shape flatters her again.
#5 Racetothefinish She might be a bit better with cheaper right now, but she should be in line for a really good trip here while settled just behind the top choice. Wouldn't be a surprise to see her hang for a piece.
#2 Sharp Hero Her best lines keep her in the mix here, and she looks a bit better when you just isolate the dirt sprint tries that came outside of stakes company. Logical player.
Race Summary Just a Wonder looks to have the best early pace in this spot, and I think she's fast enough to maintain a fairly comfortable lead on this group if she gets away cleanly.

                            Picks Notes
#3 Lima Zulu He showed a bit of pace before fading in that Fair Grounds comeback, but he looks like a good fit at this level locally as he goes first off the claim here. Think he makes some sense here.
#6 Wicked Surprise He should be in the mix early on while moving around two turns, and there isn't really a whole lot of committed pace to deal with in here -- guess his best chance is to wing it early and hope to run them off their feet.
#1 Gold Smoke He drops in for the first time after a flat comeback run, and his baseline effort is really competitive with these if he has some upside in this second start back. Wouldn't want to get sucked in here at a short price.
Race Summary Lima Zulu has some appeal here after getting a route run under his belt in January, and I think he should be in a pretty good spot near the front with this group up the backstretch.
