2nd race – (12) Hibernacle didn’t draw a good post, but his works indicate she’s another dangerous Ward firster who deserves top billing. (2) Unheard put in a bullet work for this and should be the main rival. (11) Hollywoodboulevard also seems primed for a big effort. (4) Next Dot seems to have some potential and can be a factor here. Betting strategy: 12 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-4-11-12. Doubles: 2-4-11-12 with 3-4-5-6.
3rd race – (4) The Princess Says was an improved second last time and will be hard to handle here. (3) Amaretti was second in her debut back in June and will be dangerous if she can duplicate that effort. (5) Kid’s Last Laugh comes off a good second and could get the last laugh. (6) Blame the Toll may benefit from a turnback in distance. Betting strategy: 4 to win, place. Exacta box: 3-4-5-6.
5th race – (3) Jarreau has been idle since September when he finished second in successive races. Has been working sharply for his return and should wind up on the winning end of the ledger. (8) Dripping Gold looks like the one to fear most. (12) Policy Option should be a threat in the final furlong. (11) Explosive could respond to a switch to turf. Betting strategy: 3 to win, place. Exacta box: 3-8-11-12.
7th race – (11) Flirting Bridge has not raced since missing by a neck in the Grade 1 E.P. Taylor in October but has a class edge over these. (2) Sweet Serenade was hurt by a poor start last time and can rebound here. (8) Sister Lou Ann has a nice turn of speed and could be tough to catch. (9) Blissful won her last and will be a major threat here. Betting strategy: 11 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-8-9-11. Doubles: 2-8-9-11 with 1-2-7-10.
8th race – (1) Caramel Chip (A) was a game winner in fast time at Gulfstream. Should prevail over this bunch. (10) High Heater ships in from California and should be the main foe. (7) Two Worlds has early speed and may control the early pace. (2) Gormleys Got Game could wake up off the claim. Betting strategy: 1 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-7-10.

Apple Blossom Handicap: Meet the Contenders

It’s a short, but select field for Saturday’s $1 million Grade 1 Apple Blossom Stakes at Oaklawn. The 1-1/16 miles, tradition-rich staple of springtime in Arkansas shares the marquee Saturday with the $500,000 Grade 3 Count Fleet for sprinters.

Let’s Meet the Contenders for the Apple Blossom:

#1 Secret Oath (Tyler Gaffalione // D. Wayne Lukas)

The 2022 Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks winner has amassed just shy of $2 million in lifetime earnings. Secret Oath returned for her 4-year-old season in style with an impressive win in the Grade 3 Azeri Stakes, local prep for the Apple Blossom. Her auspicious sophomore season saw her finish fourth in the Preakness, third in the Arkansas Derby and she lit the board in Grade 1 races like the Coaching Club American Oaks, Alabama and Cotillion. Hall of Fame trainer Lukas has 3 Apple Blossom trophies: 1983 (Miss Huntington), 1987 (North Sider) and most recently 2004 (Azeri). Dam Absinthe Minded finished third in the 2011 Apple Blossom and second in her 2012 return try.

#2 Hot and Sultry (David Cabrera // Norm Casse)

First or second in 5 of 6 career starts, she won the American Beauty Stakes in January while pressing the pace. She subsequently finished fourth in the Grade 3 Azeri, beaten just over 3 lengths by Secret Oath after dueling on the lead. While not a dead-set front-runner, she should be quickest of these early and set the tempo under expectedly modest fractions. Jockey Cabrera seeks his first Grade 1 victory, as does trainer Norm Casse, who earlier this spring won the Grade 2 Fair Grounds Oaks with Southlawn for his biggest career score.

#3 I Feel the Need (Chel-c Bailey // Burl McBride)

The field’s longest shot has 1 win from 8 starts, coming in maiden claiming company 14 months ago. She finished fourth in the 2022 Grade 3 Fantasy, outrunning her 40-1 odds in that 8-filly affair. Would be the first graded stakes winner for jockey Bailey as well as trainer McBride, who has been plying his trade since 1981. Daughter of Keen Ice, who upset Triple Crown winner American Pharoah in a 16-1 stunner in the 2015 Travers. Deep closer not expected to impact the early pace.

#4 Clairiere (Joel Rosario // Steve Asmussen)

Top earner in the field with $2.1 million banked, she rallied to be second-best behind Letruska in this race last season. Clairiere was a Grade 1 winner at age 3 (Cotillion) and age 4 (Ogden Phipps). The five-year-old may be the field’s elder this year, but this race has been won by the likes of Letruska (6), Zenyatta (6) and Azeri (6) in recent decades. Trainer Asmussen’s Apple Blossom history includes victories with Untapable (2015) and Midnight Bisou (2019). Jockey Rosario won the ’14 Apple Blossom aboard Close Hatches. Expect her rally to follow Secret Oath and try to cut into that 2-3/4 length margin when second-best in the Azeri.

Keeneland - Race #5

#8 Dripping Gold	Think he's going to take a little bit of cash, but he looks tough here with some upside in the second start off the bench. I'll try to hook him up with a couple mid-range price players.
#9 Maintainer	He might land a decent trip from midpack here, and I think he's worth a little look while getting back on the turf where he scored his only career win.
#1 Spin Wheel	Think he has a little appeal at a price while dropping off the layoff as a gelding. He was only a few lengths off it with similar here last April, and I'd consider on deeper tickets.
Race Summary	Dripping Gold gets the edge with a ceiling that's just a little bit higher than most in here, and he has caught some decent groups along the way. Maintainer and Spin Wheel are interesting in the frame here.

Keeneland - Race #6

#3 Chambers Bay	He might be a reach on top, but he should offer a decent number in here and has a little bit of sprint pace in a race without a ton of serious early burners. He's going to need every bit of upside he has as a second-timer if he's going to land this -- demand a big price.
#6 Money Run	He's really tough here if he brings one of his better races, but he doesn't always back up his bigger tries, so I feel at least a tiny bit cautious about landing here at a likely short price.
#8 Counterspy	He should be in line for a good trip while tracking the speed, and he proved a really good fit with starter company in New Orleans this winter. Wouldn't surprise.
Race Summary	Money Run is the one to beat in here, but he turned in a good try last out and has made a small habit of stepping back off those kinds of tries. Hoping he moves back while Chambers Bay finds the front into the turn and gets brave.

Keeneland - Race #7

#11 Flirting Bridge	She brings a couple Breeders' Cup quality running lines in here while dropping out of Grade I company, and she already fired fresh off the layoff once in the states, so I'm guessing she's good enough to land this even while prepping for a step back into stakes company.
#1 Take a Stand	She showed little in the Tampa comeback but she ran well with Grade II company late last year on the grass and might get a decent tracking trip here. Cold exacta play for me here.
#12 Lady Puchi	She was last seen when about a length and a half behind Take a Stand in that stakes start in November, and I wouldn't be at all shocked to see her fire off the bench here with an underrated turf rider aboard.
Race Summary	#9 Blissful is another who makes sense if you're looking for alternatives to the chalk, but Flirting Bridge looks like she'll probably hit hard with this allowance group. She rolled a first-level group at Churchill last year in her only North American start outside stakes company, and I think she's going to be too much for this group.

Race Summary	BIG VANILLA accelerated on the turn after an early scramble for the lead, only to get caught by a well-meant but troubled first-time starter. His speed will be tested but he still figures tough on the cutback to a short sprint. Bet to win and place.

Turf Paradise - Race #4

#2 EXECUTIVE ACTION (6-1)	Duplicate of race two back makes him major player at a decent price.
#8 BOLD VOYAGER (9-2)	Can get jump on main rivals, barn is on 3-for-10 run with claims.
#3 BARNFIELD (3-1)	Evans claim changes jockeys, will be running late.
Race Summary	EXECUTIVE ACTION advanced 3-wide on the turn but couldn’t reach the 2-to-5 pace controller in an otherwise strong effort at this distance on the turf two starts back. He’s 1-13 the last two years, but he’s in good form and often in the hunt. Bet to win and place and play a 2-3-8 exacta box.

Turf Paradise - Race #7

#6 ACE AND KINGS (9-2)	Visually impressive move after long time away, class hike within reach.
#5 JUST PICK IT UP (8-1)	Won last two starts at this distance by a combined 11-1/2 lengths.

KODALINE - Dropping in class rating points from his March 20th race at Will Rogers Downs. Based on that data, I will give this horse the advantage. Don't often see a lucrative return on investment like +27. This jockey/trainer pair has done well together over the last twelve months. HOPGUN - Dropping down in class rating points from his March 21st race at Will Rogers Downs. Based on that key piece of info, I will give this one the edge. Have to make this gelding a strong challenger; he comes off a nice effort on Mar 21st. I like the fact that this gelding's last speed fig, 82, is tops in this group. GOSPEL TRUTH - Stretching a pony out to a route after two sprints is a classic training maneuver. I like this horse. Should be familiar with this class since he ran against the same type last time out at Will Rogers Downs.

WILBERT - Not a perfect 'fit' in this event. EARS TO ME - I cannot play this continual non-winner. Gets the job completed from time to time. The speed ratings continue to descend, 83/68/58. Not a positive omen.

THE PRINCESS SAYS - Horses that finish 2nd in Maiden races and finish well clear of the show horse are generally good bets next time out. Hartman brings her right back. I recommend you stick with this hot filly.

Vulnerable Contenders: #3 AMARETTI (ML=1/1), #6 BLAME THE TOLL (ML=6/1),

AMARETTI - Tough to back any vulnerable equine in a sprint event if she hasn't hit the board in a sprint in the last couple months. MIDNIGHT IN ALASKA - Has been running very well lately and should be close to the lead early on. Could beat this field given the 67 speed figure garnered in her last outing.
