Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

    April 24, 2023 | By Al Cimaglia
Yonkers Raceway has a loaded 12-race card featuring the Blue Chip Matchmaker Final and the MGM Borgata Pacing Series Final. The 0.50 Pick 5 sequence has a $10,000 guaranteed pool and includes both Finals. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 9, and it will be my focus.

    Race 9

2-This Is The Plan (2-1)-Appears to be back in top form and set a new YR mark last week in a 150.4 win. Gingras will probably look to go gate to wire. It won't be easy but can protect the rail and hope to outlast the opposition.
3-Idealsomemagic A (6-1)-In top form with 3 wins in the Series and was very close in defeat. Brennan has steered in the last 2 races, and he might be able to work a pocket trip. Looks like a major player at a square price.

    Race 10

1-Ginger Tree Pete (7/2)-Winner of 2 straight was claimed in last by the Forte barn. Should race near the top of the stack and get another cozy trip. This horse shows 2 wins recently at the $40k level, the rest of the field has none.
4-JoJo's Place (7/2)-Was claimed for $30k by the Berkeley barn and won his 1st start for the new connections on 4-3 and now moves up. Has missed a start and qualified with a nice gate to wire score on 4-14 and looks set be a main player tonight.
5-Hurrikanekingjames (9-1)-James came close to beating the $40K claimers on 4-10 and is usually in the hunt when doesn't draw outside. Will swing for a price and Braxton could be stalking close to the leaders. Could surprise with a good trip and a lively pace would help.

    Race 11

1-Semi Tough (3/2)-Not liking the short price but the post draw should be a big help. If Gingras gets the top off the gate and can steal a quarter it could be lights out for the rest of the field. Should be a main player but needs a good trip.
4-Bellerat Boomerang (9/2)-Doesn't need to get on the point off the gate to win but Brennan could be looking to land in the pocket. This will be the 3rd start for Di Domenico after a claim and will toss the last race from post 7. Should be put in play early and be there at the wire.

    Race 12

2-Gamblingterror (6-1)-Steps up after an easy win and hasn't sealed the deal at this condition but has come close. Should be forwardly placed and is well worth a swing at the morning line price.
6-Oakwoodnitownit IR (3-1)-This 8-time winner in 2022 banked over $142K and hasn't taken a picture this year (0-9) but has been facing tougher. Dropped, faced similar last time, and raced evenly but had missed a start. Maybe Zeron will try to leave off the gate, and this 7-year-old finally wakes up.
7-Louis The Horse N (9-1)-Should offer a price in a race without a real standout and Bartlett gets the assignment. That pilot had good results with this Cullipher trainee last year. This is a difficult race to map out. Given the opportunity the 7-year-old may leave and race near the top of the stack.

    $1.00 Late Pick 4

    2,3/1,4,5/1,4/2,6,7

      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

      Thistledown - Race #1
#6 Cue the Band She just missed with similar at Mahoning last out and owns some good form over the local footing. Think she's tough with these while getting first jump today.
#4 Midnight in Ohio She turned in a solid debut effort when scoring here last year as the 3/5 chalk, and she might have some upside in this second trip to post. Capable if she fires fresh again.
#1 Glimmerglass She steps up with dangerous rail pace, and I think there's at least some chance she gets left alone on the engine long enough to make things interesting turning for home.
Race Summary Cue the Band should have the rail runner in her sights the entire time, and she draws well to get the run of the race. Think her baseline does the trick here.
      Thistledown - Race #6
#3 Uneedtocomehome Tough to split the top three in here for me, but this guy might offer a decent enough price to take a jump in, and I like that he has the versatility to sit close in a spot without a ton of serious early burn. Interesting.
#1A Paint the Town Other than catching a runaway winner in the layoff run back in February, his form has been pretty sharp, and he might still have a bit better to show.
#6 Wolfine He's back off the layoff with some running lines here last year that would make him a handful with this group if he's able to bring if off the bench. Positional pace makes sense.
Race Summary Uneedtocomehome might wind up a playable price if the other listed pair in here take some cash, and I like that his tactical pace should give him a perfect run of things right near the front.
      Thistledown - Race #7
#2 Striking Again I'm not totally sold on the shorter prices in here, and this guy might have a little room to improve in his first start of the season. He's still pretty lightly raced and brings a steady series of comeback works. Maybe?
#6 Nosey Power He is one of the obvious players in here, but he has had 24 starts and is no sure thing to hold the form from the last one. No surprise here, but what price are you willing to accept in start number 25?
#9 Ohio River Not totally sure what to make of him in this one after stopping badly last time out, as his two-back run hinted that maybe he would be moving in the right direction. He might run a bad group off their feet, but he still feels dicey to me today.
Race Summary Striking Again should get overlooked a bit in here, and I am not thrilled about signing up for potential short prices on Nosey Power or Ohio River. There isn't much depth in this spot, so maybe he'll bring fresh form that proves competitive.

        Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

Will Rogers Downs - Race #1
#4 FIRE EXTINGUISHER (4-1) Late kick in sprints, no match for faves while 5-wide, switches pilots.
#7 GHOST STRATEGY (3-1) Dueled and gave way to odds-on winner and deep-closing runner-up.
#1 MAJOR GRIFFIN (6-1) Spent long time in non-winners of 2 condition, broke through with romp.
Race Summary FIRE EXTINGUISHER tries a new distance for his third start off a year layoff. He was in range of the favorites last out at 6F, advanced some on the turn and finished third while widest in the lane. Bet to win and place.
Will Rogers Downs - Race #2
#4 HOLCOMBE (8-1) Strong debut, can be closer to pace with alert start, good value play.
#8 HERO TIME (3-1) Bore in and bumped winner at onset of stretch-long battle.
#9 FORT NECESSITY (6-1) Up close and in the money in three consecutive starts.
Race Summary HOLCOMBE rallied 5-wide on the turn after a bumpy start and narrowed the gap on the top pair in the stretch. The timer malfunctioned but race replay validates his strong debut effort with Lasix. Play a 4-ALL exacta with today’s Best Bet on top.
Will Rogers Downs - Race #9
#4 ADRIA (5-1) Patiently ridden in three-peat victory, gets new rider, extra half-furlong a plus.
#3 RAGAN’S JET (5-2) Carried her speed to four wins in a row, the last two in stakes.
#7 DICEY (7-2) Jordan’s choice over Adria gathered momentum on turn, got beat a length by ‘Ragan.’
Race Summary ADRIA, content to track the 3-1 runner-up until the stretch, drove past late for her third consecutive victory. She’s a new horse of late and appears ready for her first stakes try in the $50,000 Willa Mankiller. Bet to win and place.

              PURCHASE

Will Rogers Downs - Race #10 - Post: 5:35pm - Maiden Special - 5.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $21,000 Class Rating: 67

              Rating:

              #11 MAJESTIC LIAISON (ML=9/2)
              #7 LATE NITE RADIO (ML=5/1)

MAJESTIC LIAISON - I like to bet on this handicapping theory, a thoroughbred coming back off a strong contest within the last thirty days. Is ranked uppermost in earnings per start. A solid try in today's race will boost the lifetime earnings. LATE NITE RADIO - This horse has been training well, and the recent bullet work says he's primed for a top effort today. Was in a Maiden Special race at Oaklawn Park last time out. That contest had a class number of 85 and he is moving down in today's race. A certain solid contender. Just check out his last speed figure, 78. That one fits in this field.

              Vulnerable Contenders: #2 CAPTAIN DOZER (ML=7/2), #5 OKLAHOMA MOON (ML=4/1), #8 MEGA SHACK (ML=8/1),

CAPTAIN DOZER - This gelding hasn't had any strong efforts in sprint contests in the last 60 days. OKLAHOMA MOON - Don't figure that this racer has what it takes to win this time out. MEGA SHACK - Unlikely that this vulnerable equine will be at his best today off the long vacation. Maybe next time. This closer should have a rough go of it to be along with an absence of pace in this race.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: #11 MAJESTIC LIAISON is the play if we get odds of 3/2 or better
              EXACTA WAGERS: Box [7,11]

                Race 8 - Claiming - 5.5f on the Dirt. Purse: $11800 Class Rating: 64

FOR FILLIES AND MARES THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD WHICH HAVE NEVER WON TWO RACES. THREE YEAR OLDS, 119 LBS.; OLDER, 123 LBS. NON-WINNERS OF A RACE SINCE MARCH 24 ALLOWED 2 LBS. A RACE SINCE FEBRUARY 24 ALLOWED 4 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $5,000

                RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                # 5 HOPS PETUNIA 12/1
                # 3 STORMY BELLA 9/2
                # 8 MARIMBA 3/1
I've got to go with HOPS PETUNIA especially at 12/1. Will more than likely be one of the leaders of the group going into the midpoint of the race. This filly looks good in here since Castillo has a strong win percentage with horses going this distance. Overall, this conditioner has been profitable at this distance/surface. STORMY BELLA - Is a solid choice - given the 64 Equibase speed fig from her most recent race. I expect a competitive performance from this animal whose conditioner has one of the best ROI percentages with horses running at this distance and surface. MARIMBA - Ran a sharp last race.

                  # 1 INVESTMENT GRADE 5/2
                  # 1A STABILIZE 5/2
                  # 4 TRIPP ROAD 6/1
INVESTMENT GRADE has a formidable shot to take this race. Garnered a competitive speed fig last time out. STABILIZE - Has a very strong shot in this race if you like back class. Has performed admirably recently in sprint races, posting a nifty 63 avg speed figure. TRIPP ROAD - Overall the Equibase speed figs of this pony look decent in this contest. The duo of Sone/Sells has one of the best ROI percentages in this group of horses.

                    Turf Paradise - Race #3 - Post: 2:23pm - Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $9,900 Class Rating: 77

                    Rating:

                    #7 BLUES RAPPER (ML=8/1)
                    #4 TRUTH TO POWER (ML=3/1)
                    #6 MY SWEET LORD (ML=4/1)

BLUES RAPPER - Really figure this fine animal is going to be really close at the finish. TRUTH TO POWER - Last raced at Turf Paradise carrying 5 pounds more. The lower impost in this event should serve him well. MY SWEET LORD - The jockey/conditioner tandem of Lopez and Evans has a strong ROI together. Ranks highest in (EPS) earnings per start. A strong try in this race will boost that bankroll. This horse has increased his Equibase speed figs in each of the last two races. That kind of progress is telling me this horse is ready.

Vulnerable Contenders: #2 LITTLE RED RIFLE (ML=5/2), #3 KEENEYE GEORGE (ML=5/1), #1 MINNESOTA RED (ML=6/1),

LITTLE RED RIFLE - This questionable contender hasn't been close at the finish line recently. KEENEYE GEORGE - Not probable that this equine will finish better than he did last time out when placing third. Finished third in his most recent effort with a quite unimpressive speed rating. When I look at today's class figure, it would take an improved performance to win after that in this bunch. MINNESOTA RED - The speed ratings continue to descend, 63/49/34. Not a healthy signal.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Play #7 BLUES RAPPER to win if you can get odds of 7/2 or more
