        Keeneland Hotlist - April 27

        Apr. 26, 2023

By Bob Ehalt and Matt Shifman
        Hot List Key:
A : A preferred horse to watch B: Secondary horse to watch
*C: Went down 2 or more betting notches in the final 3 minutes and finished 1st through 3rd
*D: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 4th or worse
        * - 4 or more betting notches if 11-1 or more.
2nd race – (8) Candymaker has turned in two bullet works for his debut and should provide Ward with another juvenile win. (7) Calhoun also sports some sharp works for his debut. (10) Fandom is another firster from Ward who cannot be ignored. (4) Blast Furnace fits in nicely with this field. Betting strategy: 8 to win, place. Exacta box: 4-7-8-10. Doubles: 4-7-8-10 with 1-2-3-5.
3rd race – (2) Arden’s Assault was a troubled third in her debut and can make amends here. (3) Union Harmony is working smartly for her debut. (1) Patience Worth was second in her last three tries and belongs in the exotics. (5) Mo Town Mayhem should fare better on dirt. Betting strategy: 2 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-3. Exactas: 2-3 over 1-5 and 1-5 over 2-3.
5th race – (4) The Grey Wizard has the kind of late kick that will be suited by the marathon distance. (5) Wicked Fast exits graded stakes company and looks like the one to fear. (9) Sir for Sure will be a factor if there’s no rust after a layoff. (6) Six Minus has late speed and will be a man factor. Betting strategy: 4 to win, place. Exacta box: 4-5-6-9.
7th race – (3) Venencia makes her U.S. debut for Brown and seems bound for the winner’s circle. (4) Gromantine was a good third in her U.S. debut and should be the main rival. (5) Be My Sunshine was a wide second last time and can make her presence felt. (1) Boudica should benefit from a rail trip. Betting strategy: 3 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-3-4-5. Doubles: 1-3-4-5 with 2-3-6-7. 8th race – (7) Non Violence disappointed last time but can bounce back in this spot. (6) Tales of Home will welcome a dry track. (2) Story Hour could shine in this spot. (3) Send for Me may perk up on dirt. Betting strategy: 7 to win, place. Exacta box: 6-7. Exactas: 6-7 over 2-3 and 2-3 over 6-7.

Al Cimaglia: Hoosier Park Late Pick 4 Analysis

          April 27, 2023 | By Al Cimaglia
Hoosier Park has a 14-race card scheduled and the 0.50 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 11. The sequence has a $10,000 guaranteed pool, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

          Race 11

3-Caesar's Shot (7/2)-Should enjoy the company and meets a beatable field if comes away with a close-up seat. Looking for an aggressive steer and at this class Ross can put this mare in play when the wings fold.
4-ER Super Shady (3-1)-Has been facing tougher and needs a more alert start but does drop to a competitive level. One-move type could get an efficient trip and this post draw should help.

          Race 12

1-Always Amazing (2-1)-Good try from the 2nd tier in last to finish 2nd. Followed cover which stalled at the top of the lane, finally got going in the late going and rallied willing. De Long can work a better trip starting on the gate and should be in the hunt at the wire.
4-We Be Jammin (6-1)-Comes off a nice qualifier and could be ready for a big try in the 1st start since 9-2-21. Might be overlooked at the windows and including the 9/5 program chalk (6) there are no standouts in this field.
6-Vel What A Star (9/5)-Did pace the back half in 55.2 last week but couldn't make up ground. Has speed but seems to follow and not pass. Willing to respect connections but doesn't offer any value at the program odds, has an 0-11 lifetime record, and hasn't won here in 8 tries.

          Race 13

2-Lupa (2-1)-Oosting takes the lines for the 1st time and will assume the Miller pupil will be forwardly placed. Did close with a .55 back half and should enjoy the company. This and #5 below may look to get the top.
4-Islikeittell (12-1)-Finished about a length behind #2 on 4-14 and has shown good speed late in the mile. If Wilfong can get this 3-year-old in striking range at the head of the lane if could be picture time at a big price.
5-Mach Seelster (5/2)-Stayed inside in all 3 starts and had its best time of 152.3 in the last race to finish 2nd. Has hit the board in the last 2 starts, will look for an aggressive steer and a big try.

          Race 14

3-Goldies Rockin (6-1)-Swinging for a price and my thinking is Ross will stay inside and try to be close to the leaders at the 3/4's pole. Could get sucked around and close fastest of all.
4-Tell Me Please (4-1)-Qualified 2 times at HoP in April and then made a winning debut for the Macomber barn. Closed nicely last time and could be in the mix despite stepping up.
7-Fleetmadefordancin (6-1)-Comes off a couple of solid qualifiers at Southern Oaks in Florida and could fire hot off the bench. This Smith trainee banked $35k last year but had only 1 win. Faced better as a freshman and should do well versus this group.

          0.50 Late Pick 4

          3,4/1,4,6/2,4,5/3,4,7
          Total Bet=$27

Lift Ticket: Picks, Promos for Hawthorne Race 2 | Thursday

            April 26, 2023 | By 1/ST BET
            Thursday, April 27, 2023
            Hawthorne Race 2

            Handicapper: 1/ST BET Artificial Intelligence

            #5 Jemez Falls (28%)
            #1 Lunarchy (16%)
            #6 Short Straw (16%)

            //

            Handicapper: Brian W. Spencer

            #5 Jemez Falls
She drops back down for this one after racing for more than twice the price in those last three starts, and she was a good second from off the pace when facing similar last year. Tactical type can land this.

            #6 Short Straw
She showed good pace before fading in the final furlong in the debut run, but she probably has at least a little upside here with that race under her belt. Think she's the most committed pace player. Wouldn't surprise.

            #1 Lunarchy
This barn does good work in pretty much every category, but I wouldn't be too excited to sign on here at any kind of short price while dropping again off a flat first try with maiden claimers.

Brian’s Notes: Jemez Falls has better positional pace than she showed at this level on New Year's Eve, but she proved a good class fit that day and seems likely enough to land this one with a better trip while getting back to that level.

              Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

              Hawthorne - Race #2
#5 Jemez Falls She drops back down for this one after racing for more than twice the price in those last three starts, and she was a good second from off the pace when facing similar last year. Tactical type can land this.
#6 Short Straw She showed good pace before fading in the final furlong in the debut run, but she probably has at least a little upside here with that race under her belt. Think she's the most committed pace player. Wouldn't surprise.
#1 Lunarchy This barn does good work in pretty much every category, but I wouldn't be too excited to sign on here at any kind of short price while dropping again off a flat first try with maiden claimers.
Race Summary Jemez Falls has better positional pace than she showed at this level on New Year's Eve, but she proved a good class fit that day and seems likely enough to land this one with a better trip while getting back to that level.
              Hawthorne - Race #7
#1 Positiondumoni I would want a fair price to sign on here with a potentially tricky trip waiting for her from the fence, but she showed some life last time out and seems to be heading in the right direction. Capable with any additional step forward in the third start off the bench.
#7 Gladys Alice She and #5 Gettin Down both debut for Rivelli, so check them out on the tote and track ahead of this one, but I have to be honest and say neither of these jumps off the page for me like a lot of Riv firsters would.
#4 Creme de Cassis She chased before giving way in the debut run, but she was chasing the eventual 12-length debut winner of that race who was less than a fifth of a second off the track record right out of the box. Assuming there is some upside, but I wonder if the Rivelli debuters will show pace and complicate things for her.
Race Summary Positiondumoni came off the bench in a fast race and moved forward nicely off that run with a good second here earlier this month. Wouldn't be shocked to see her sitting on something good enough to land this.
              Hawthorne - Race #9
#4 Madelyns Heat His form has never been that consistent, but I'm willing to give him a look off the bench. His form got ugly near the end of the 2022 campaign, but those October tries here are in the right ballpark, and he has some proven finishing ability that could serve him well at a price if the pace heats up.
#6 Birdie Machine He gets into an easier spot off the layoff, and maybe some time away did him some good after his form soured following a sharp debut win at Canterbury. That said, the connections don't seem to be too worried about losing him for $6,250 today, so the hope is more that his current form will suffice than it is that he's ever getting back to that debut.
#9 Timehascome He's probably best of the speed players here and gets a good draw to take advantage of it, but I worry that he's got some company early and will be overbet while facing winners for the first time.
Race Summary Can see three, maybe four, horses getting mixed up in the early stages here either on the pace or chasing it, and Madelyns Heat at least owns a few decent finishing lines on his page. Maybe the form is lost for the new barn, but today would be the kind of day he might wake up with the right setup off the bench.

                Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

                Gulfstream Park - Race #1
#6 NEVER BEEN WRONG (7-2) Troubled third in career debut on turf, can return quick claim dividend.
#7 STARSHIP SKITTLES (15-1) Busy work tab, sire ranks third in 2023 progeny turf earnings.
#2 DOWNBURST (5-2) Appears stuck in ‘third’ gear, bid 5-wide on turn in latest but flattened out.
Race Summary NEVER BEEN WRONG, floated 7-wide entering the stretch in a turf-to-dirt route race, did well to finish third. She adds blinkers for her new barn and returns to the lawn, where she rallied wide after a troubled start and finished second in a photo finish. The winner, Swoonatra, came back to win again in a $35,000 claimer on the grass. Bet to win and place.
                Gulfstream Park - Race #3
#7 GOTTA LIKE HIM (3-1) Better than first start for a claiming price appears, today’s Best Bet.
#4 EVENTFUL (4-1) Switches riders again, alert start the key, gets pace to rally into.
#3 INSTINCTUAL (5-2) Been lacking stretch kick, drops below level of claim for Joseph barn.
Race Summary GOTTA LIKE HIM, roughed up at the start, loomed boldly with a gain between rivals on the turn, only to race evenly in the stretch. Like his chances from a good striking spot if he breaks cleanly. Bet to win and place.
                Gulfstream Park - Race #7
#6 LITERATE (9-2) Idle two months since claim, steps up in class, recent work a good sign.
#2 IMONRA (5-2) Hit board in all three starts at short prices; dam was a stakes-winning miler.
#5 PRINCESS TENKO (8-1) Took serious money, didn’t threaten in debut, sheds blinkers.
Race Summary LITERATE followed the moves of the top two finishers but had to alter course in the final furlong while settling for third. She was claimed by Delgado and fired a :46.3 bullet workout last Friday to prep for her first start on dirt. Bet to win and place.

SWAN POINT is my choice. Has to be considered - I like the numbers from the last race. Players should take a good look at this one as this mare has one of the best win percentages at this distance in this group of horses. Can't overlook the connections here, a 19 winning percentage, one of the most favorable at getting into the winner's circle. PERFECT HIDEAWAY - Always seems to be right there at the finish line. Could provide positive dividends based on very strong recent speed figures with an average of 78. SOFIA'S SECRET - With a nice Equibase class figure average of 85, has one of the strongest class advantages in this group of horses. Has been racing solidly and has among the best speed in the race for today's distance.

                        Evangeline Downs - Race #1 - Post: 5:30pm - Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $10,000 Class Rating: 66

                        Rating:

                        #1 LAURIEANN (ML=9/2)
                        #8 MY KIKI (ML=2/1)

LAURIEANN - She got a decent speed fig the last time she tried this distance. This mare runs very well off of a vacation. Based on this mare's recent efforts, she should benefit from today's shorter trip. You have to always check out this type of speed horse with an inside post position in a sprint on a bullring. MY KIKI - Larrosa must have known this mare would run well at this track. Won her last race here on Apr 15th and now goes for two in a row. Barrera comes to ride after getting to know the mare in the last affair. This mare is in nice form, having run a strong race on April 15th, finishing first.

                        Vulnerable Contenders: #7 PEACEFUL VISION (ML=5/2), #3 PRINCESS TRINA (ML=4/1), #5 BE A BANDIT (ML=8/1),

PEACEFUL VISION - The lack of drills has to make one concerned despite the good performance in the last contest. PRINCESS TRINA - 72/66/23, are the deteriorating Equibase speed figures for this horse. Most of the time I need a sprinter to have some recent good showings in sprint affairs in order to back her. BE A BANDIT - When looking at today's class rating, she will have to record a much better speed figure than in the last race to be competitive in this dirt sprint.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - MY KIKI - Betting the animal with the best last race speed figure is a good angle. None higher than this mare's last one.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Putting our cash on #1 LAURIEANN to win. Have to have odds of at least 7/5 or better though

Race 9 - Maiden Special Weight - 9.5f on the Turf. Purse: $100000 Class Rating: 88

FOR MAIDENS, THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD. THREE YEAR OLDS, 118 LBS.; OLDER, 126 LBS. IN THE EVENT THAT THIS RACE IS TAKEN OFF THE TURF IT WILL BE CONTESTED AT ONE MILE AND THREE-SIXTEENTHS ON THE MAIN TRACK.

                          RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                          # 6 DR KRINGLE 6/1
                          # 10 MISSIONAIRE 5/2
                          # 1 GETTLEMAN 9/2
My choice in this event is DR KRINGLE. Look for a decent pace improvement from this racer who enters with second time Lasix today. MISSIONAIRE - Clement has a formidable 18 percent win rate with entries running at this distance and surface. I would think about this colt on the jock and handler numbers alone. GETTLEMAN - This gelding could improve with second time Lasix.

                            Gulfstream Park - Race #3 - Post: 1:38pm - Maiden Claiming - 5.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $32,000 Class Rating: 82

                            Rating:

                            #3 INSTINCTUAL (ML=5/2)
                            #6 GLOBAL PRIDE (ML=12/1)

INSTINCTUAL - Sophisticated handicappers will tell you that this thoroughbred has strong speed. This animal brings in a lot of cash per race around the track. Tops in this contest. GLOBAL PRIDE - I'm expecting this mount to run a big one this time out.

                            Vulnerable Contenders: #7 GOTTA LIKE HIM (ML=3/1), #4 EVENTFUL (ML=4/1), #1 JAY'S DELIGHT (ML=9/2),

GOTTA LIKE HIM - Tough to bet on any horse to turn things around if there is no wager value to taking the stab. EVENTFUL - Speed ratings tell a story of lessening condition. JAY'S DELIGHT - The finish position of eleventh in the last affair shows me that this horse may be going out of form.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: #3 INSTINCTUAL is going to be the play if we are getting 7/5 or better
