Keeneland Select Pick of the Day | May 6, 2023

    May. 04, 2023

Race 9 at Churchill Downs | Saturday May 6 | Post Time 3:40 PM Eastern
American Turf Stakes | Purse $500,000 | One Mile and One Sixteenth on Turf | Three Year Olds
    Analysis:
In this 14 horse field (plus two also-eligibles) there are a number of horses which have won stakes races on the grass who are likely to offer double digit odds. It remains to be seen whether the morning line odds, which predict what the public will do, will hold up. As it stands going into the race, the three horses with the lowest starting odds are Major Dude (1) at 5 to 2, Carl Spackler (11) at 3 to 1 and Far Bridge (2) at 7 to 2. All three horses are contenders with a chance to win, but their odds are RIDICULOUSLY low in my opinion compared to at least a handful of others with similar records and speed figures. The reason these three horses have low starting odds are identifiable. Major Dude just finished second in the Jeff Ruby Steaks behind Two Phil’s (running in the Kentucky Derby later on the card) and was list of the top 25 eligible to run in the Derby but the owners (Spendthrift Farms) already have Kingsbarns in the Derby field. Carl Spackler won impressively on turf in his most recent race and is trained by Chad Brown, while Far Bridge also won impressively in his last start and is trained by Todd Pletcher. Just the same, there is more hype than substance surrounding these three and they are no more probable to win than a handful of others.
    Contenders to bet:
Johannes (5) is the first of those with a lot of betting value, opening at 15 to 1. He’s won three in a row including two stakes races (the Baffle Stakes and the Pasadena Stakes), with both of his last two wins coming in spite of traffic trouble. He returned from two months off on March 5 to win a turf sprint then stretched out to two turns and won even more easily, with a 102 Equibase Speed Figure better than the 97 & 101 figures Far Bridge has earned, better than the 101 and 93 figures Carl Spackler has earned and better than the 99 and 94 best figures Major Dude has earned. Umberto Rispoli has ridden him three times, winning all three, and the colt is on a pattern to run a new best effort in his third start off the layoff.
Talk of the Nation (4) opens at 10 to 1, and like Johannes he comes off a stakes win. Far Bridge earned his wins in maiden and allowance races and Carl Spackler has just a maiden win to his credit, so the fact both Talk of the Nation and Johannes have stakes winning credentials are significant. When trying turf for the first time on February 4, Talk of the Nation romped by four lengths with a 96 figure, before markedly improving to a 106 figure winning the Columbia Stakes on March 11. Red hot Tyler Gaffalione, coming off winning the riding title at the recently concluded Keeneland meeting, takes the call for Hall-of-Fame trainer Shug McGaughey and there are no knocks on this colt with every right to run well enough to win.
Next we have a horse at even higher odds, Desert Duke (7) who begins at 30 to 1 odds. He missed by a nose in his turf debut in January then two later won nicely with a 95 figure. He ran even better last month at the first allowance level at Keeneland, earning a 105 figure better than the 97 Far Bridge earned in his win at the same allowance level. That 105 figure is HIGHER than the 99 figure Mo Stash earned over the same grass course at Keeneland winning the Transylvania Stakes and higher than the 99 figure Major Dude earned winning the Kitten’s Joy Stakes before finishing second in the Jeff Ruby. In short, these 30 to 1 odds make no sense and practically demand we take advantage by betting this horse, who can win on the lead or from off the pace.
Mo Stash (8) opens at 10 to 1 in spite of winning the Transylvania Stakes, with a fine runner-up effort behind Talk of the Nation in the Columbia Stakes prior to that. Luis Saez has been up for both wins after not riding the colt previously, and is likely to try to get the early lead as that was a successful tactic in the Transylvania and there isn’t really any other “early” speed types inside of Mo Stash in the gate so that goal may work.
Far Bridge (2), Major Dude (1) and Carl Spackler (11) are certainly contenders, but there is no value in combining them on exacta tickets so the strategy will be to use the four horses with high odds and split the favorites, so if we win we win the bet multiple times.
    Bets:
Win Bets: I am absolutely going to bet Johannes (5) and Talk of the Nation (4) to win at odds of 4 to 1 or more. I will also consider a win bet for a smaller amount on Desert Duke (7) at 6 to 1 or more.
    Exactas:
Box Major Dude (1), Talk of the Nation (4), Johannes (5), Desert Duke (7), Mo Stash (8)
Box Far Bridge (2), Talk of the Nation (4), Johannes (5), Desert Duke (7), Mo Stash (8)
Box Carl Spackler (11), Talk of the Nation (4), Johannes (5), Desert Duke (7), Mo Stash (8)

Churchill Downs Derby Day FULLCARD Hotlist - May 6

      May. 04, 2023

By Bob Ehalt and Matt Shifman
      Hot List Key:
      A:
A preferred horse to watch B: Secondary horse to watch
*C: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 1st through 3rd
*D: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 4th or worst
      * - 4 or more betting notches if 11-1 or more.
1st race – (1) Extra Anejo was considered a Kentucky Derby prospect until he was sidelined in the fall. Starts his 3-year-old season with a win here. (3) Federal Judge was an impressive debut winner at Oaklawn and should be the main rival. (5) Stud Lovin should thrive on dirt. (8) Deer District is usually in the picture at the end.
2nd race – (3) Harbor Bridge should find smooth sailing in his first try around two turns. (8) Quality Chic could be closing fast at the end. (1) Cape Trafalgar will be helped by a rail trip. (6) Quaternion showed some improvement last time.
3rd race - (1) Bright Future appears to have just that for Pletcher. (5) King Ottoman should be the key contender in this field. (3) Transect might rebound on a dry track. (13) Major Blue will enjoy some class relief here.
4th race – Derby City Distaff (G1) - (2) Goodnight Olive is the reigning division champ and looked as good as ever in 2023 debut, winning the Grade 1 Madison. (5) Matareya had a useful comeback race and should be on edge for this. (3) Wicked Halo belongs in the exotics.
5th race –Longines Churchill Distaff Turf Mile (G2) - (5) Spenderella was brilliant last year and should pick up where she left off last time out in August. (2) Speak of the Devil won this race last year and merits respect. (4) Wakanaka will be dangerous in the final furlong. (7) Fluffy Socks has enough class to be a threat here.
6th race –Knicks Go Overnight Stakes - (6) Zozos looed good while winning at Fair Grounds and gets the nod here. (2) Masqueparade is classy and working smartly for his return to the races. (3) Baby Yoda can make his presence felt. (12) Caddo River has enough speed to contend in this field.
7th race – Twin Spires Turf Sprint (G2) - (10) Arrest Me Red got rolling too late last time and settled for third. Makes amends here. (4) Big Invasion should be charging into the picture in the stretch.(7) Nothing Better could be tough to catch. (13) Artemus Citylimits has the potential to stage an upset here.
8th race –Pat Day Mile (G2) - (9) General Jim can take command and handle this field. (7) Fort Bragg should be well-suited by a one-turn mile. (12) Gun Pilot could soar on a dry track. (3) Lugan Knight can be a contender off his best try.
9th race –American Turf Stakes (G2) - (11) Carl Spackler was a highly impressive maiden winner and has been pointed toward this race. (1) Major Dude couldn’t crack the Derby field but will be a major factor here. (2) Far Bridge is undefeated and cannot be ignored. (3) Mendelssohns March should fare better back on turf.
10th race –Churchill Downs Stakes (G1) - (7) Cody’s Wish makes his 2023 debut and seems poised for another big year. (10) Endorsed is in fantastic form and looks like the main rival. (1) White Abarrio should work out a good trip from the rail. (6) Tejano Twist will benefit if the pace gets too hot.
11th race – Old Forester Bourbon Turf Classic (G1) - (5) Up to the Mark was third in the Grade 1 Maker’s Mark at a mile and will enjoy the added distance. (7) Hong Kong Harry is a dangerous West Coast shipper. (9) Spooky Channel used his late kick to win a Fair Grounds stakes and will be a main factor here. (2) Master Piece can rebound with a better effort here.
12th race – The Kentucky Derby (G1) - (14) Angel of Empire has come into his own in his last two starts, winning the Arkansas Derby and Risen Star. It looks like he thrives on longer distances and in the end that could be the deciding factor. (15) Forte has done nothing but win in his last five starts. He’s a deserving favorite and the one to beat, but maybe today is the day when he encounters some trouble he can’t handle. (17) Derma Sotogake represents Japan, which has been dominate on the international scene. Dominant in the UAE Derby, he could be the one to give his country its first American classic win. (7) Reincarnate was a disappointing fourth in the Santa Anita Derby but merits attention based on a good effort during a troubled trip in the Rebel.
13th race – (1) Equivoque was an easy debut winner and should be able to handle this field in his first try against winners. (10) Shopper’s Revenge will find the going easier here after running in a stakes. (8) Classic Legacy has a nice turn of late speed and cannot be discounted. (6) Promise Me a Ride won his debut in a promising manner. 14th race – (2) Everso Mischievous battled fiercely and lost by a head in his debut. Gets that maiden win here. (9) Mullikinwas second in both starts and can complete the exacta here. (14) Dillinger could steal this one from the far outside post. (5) Golden Sombrero might shine in this field.

            # 8 HEZ BLACKLISTED 8/1
            # 1 INPHINITY 10/1
JESS A PYC DASH looks very strong to best this field. Change in Lasix (on Lasix) may be the difference to a return. Lately Rivera has been scorching which may give the edge to this colt. Rivera has recent return on investment figs which make this one a very good bet. HEZ BLACKLISTED - Is difficult not to consider based on Equibase Speed Figures which have been formidable - 78 avg - of late. Could beat this group of horses given the 76 speed rating recorded in his last outing. INPHINITY - He has been running very well and the Equibase Speed Figs are among the strongest in this field.

              # 2 TREPADOR 5/2
              # 1 GENUINE REVENANT 12/1
              # 6 XPLOSIVE FIRE 7/2
TREPADOR looks respectable to best this field. Arrossa has this gelding racing well and is a decent pick based on the quite good Equibase speed figs recorded in short races lately. Calderon has a winning percentage of 15 over the last month. Has solid early speed and ought to fare very well against this group of animals. GENUINE REVENANT - Could go off at a nice number and has some positive things going for him. His chances to prove victorious are much better today facing this less demanding field. XPLOSIVE FIRE - Look for this racer to be right there at the wire versus these racers. Overall the speed figures of this horse look respectable in this contest.

                Belmont Park - Race #3 - Post: 1:33pm - Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $28,000 Class Rating: 76

                Rating:

                #1 LEGENDARY LORE (ML=5/2)

LEGENDARY LORE - Taking a trip down the ladder based on class rating points; has the class to make his presence felt. You'll be generating money right and left by turning your cash onto this jockey/trainer combination. Jockey hops right back on after getting to know the race horse by riding last race out. That's always a good indicator. Last race at Aqueduct, he broke from the far outside. I don't need an advanced degree like The Brain to tell me his inside post position today should help. Morey will try adding the 'shades' today in hopes of an improved performance.

                Vulnerable Contenders: #6 IN THE UNION (ML=8/5), #7 UNION LIGHTS (ML=3/1), #3 B C GLORY DAYS (ML=8/1),

IN THE UNION - This vulnerable equine will probably need at least one more run after the lackluster showing following the extended time off. This horse just hasn't looked ready of late. UNION LIGHTS - Finished second in his most recent race with a quite unimpressive speed rating. When I look at today's class rating, it would take an improved performance to win after that in this group. B C GLORY DAYS - Difficult to keep chasing this kind of 'hanger' horse. Difficult to take this less than sharp equine at these odds after the result (fifth) in the last race. Finished fifth in his most recent race with a quite unimpressive fig. When I look at today's class rating, it would take an improved performance to prove victorious after that in this group.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - LEGENDARY LORE - Put a wager on this gelding. At the top in earnings per start and has a lot more to offer as well.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Put your money on #1 LEGENDARY LORE on the nose if you can get odds of 1/1 or more

                  Lone Star Park - Race #6 - Post: 3:55pm - Claiming - 7.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $13,000 Class Rating: 74

                  Rating:

                  #2 JAMES'S MOONSHINE (ML=8/1)
                  #1 BREW CREW (ML=7/2)
#3 GRAZEN IN THE PARK (ML=6/1)
                  #5 TENACIOUS LION (ML=12/1)
                  #4 GAMMA RAY (ML=3/1)

JAMES'S MOONSHINE - He got a decent speed rating the last time he tried this distance. Early zip is always important in horse racing, but the lone speed horse is always dangerous. This gelding is in nice form. Finished third on April 21st. Was in a $5,000 Claiming race at Lone Star Park last out. That race had an Equibase class figure of 79 and he is moving down right here. A certain contender. BREW CREW - Possibly a peak effort for this gelding today. Been getting closer with each recent start. The April 21st race at Lone Star Park was at a class level of (79). Dropping down in the class scale considerably, so he should be in a good spot. Moves back to a trip at which he ran a speed rating good enough to make him a contender today. Is ranked number one in the field in earnings per start (EPS). A dominant try right here in this race will boost the lifetime bankroll. GRAZEN IN THE PARK - Trainer Villafranco moves this thoroughbred down the class ladder to face weaker company. Look for a nice performance this time out. A pony coming back this soon after a strong effort is a good signal. TENACIOUS LION - Guerra and Cravens partnered together are a railbird's friend. GAMMA RAY - Barandela comes to saddle up after getting to know the horse in the last race. I like to play this handicapping theory, a campaigner coming back off a nice race within the last month. Have to like the way Eoff has raced this horse back into shape off the layoff. Horse is well spotted in this sprint and I think he'll run well today.

Vulnerable Contenders: #7 LOVING LUCKY (ML=2/1),

LOVING LUCKY - The lack of zip in the last one, a route race, is a bit disconcerting. In any race of 7 furlongs, I like to back a contender that has been looking good in sprint affairs of late.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Play #2 JAMES'S MOONSHINE to win if you can get odds of 4/1 or more
                  EXACTA WAGERS: 2 with [1,3,4,5]
