Al Cimaglia: Northfield Park Late Pick 4 Analysis

    May 16, 2023 | By Al Cimaglia
Northfield Park has a 15-race card set to roll and the $1.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 11. The sequence has a low 14% takeout with a $10,000 guaranteed pool, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 11

5-Pirates Beach Bar (5-1)-Won his only start here and raced as a freshman on the Ohio fair circuit. This will be the 3rd start on an "A" track and at this price is well worth a swing.
6-Heave Ho (3-1)-Got a pocket ride in last but appeared to be head strong and locked at times on the left line. Did get rolling down the lane but was no match for the winner who was behind, trapped on the rail and was strong when free. Davis Jr could leave, get control, and not look back.

    Race 12

3-Pit Panda (7-1)-Willing to fade the rail horse who is 3/2 and 0-15 this year. If Massey gets a close-up seat and provides a sharp steer this 4-year-old could post his 5th win in 15 starts this year. This price shot gets class and post relief tonight.
4-Elite Machine (9/2)-The Ohio-bred has one good move and has hit the board in 25 of 47 races here with 8 wins. Does have enough gate speed to get a pocket ride and looks like a trip out candidate.
7-Our Zak Whitby A (6-1)-Came a close 2nd from the 2nd tier last week and this veteran tries hard. The steer will be key, Davis Jr has options. Might leave or if a few others blast out, could duck, and look to rally off cover. Either way the price is right to use.

    Race 13

1-Wheresjim (5-1)-Didn't get a good drive last time and might have won if the trip would have been managed better. Sugg takes over and will look for an efficient journey and a better finish.
7-Remembering Shorty (9/2)-Gets a little post relief and comes off a big effort to finish 2nd starting from post 8. The 6-year-old is camera shy, and this barn is 0-21 over the last 30 days but will still respect chances for a picture versus this crew.
9-Captain Butler (5/2)-Not loving the short price morning line but seems to do better racing near the top of the stack and that could happen. The rail horse and #2 do have some gate speed and if Lems can find a way to be forwardly placed chances of cashing the top check go up.

    Race 14

4-Meetmeinthehallway (7/2)-This one woke up a bit after dropping to this level last week. Really had nowhere to go after cover stalled and needed to go wide when rallying for 3rd. Looking for an efficient journey and a big try.
5-Jula Magician (2-1)-Had to do a little extra work to drop into the pocket and raced well in its 1st Nfld start. Merriman takes the lines, and he was steering the well rated winner that Magician followed to the wire. Could be better after a race on the oval and should be driven aggressively.

    $1.00 Late Pick 4

    5,6/3,4,7/1,7,9/4,5

      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Presque Isle Downs - Race #6
#4 Declared Reliable finisher was really good here last season and landed a couple stakes shares, and he's a super cozy fit with this kind if he's ready go off the bench -- he was last seen rolling similar by better than five in October.
#6 Templet Think he ran better than it looks here on a couple occasions last season, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him complete the exacta while maybe just slightly overlooked. Fast enough to be in the forward mix in a race without a ton of speed.
#9 Bugle Barry He has a recency edge on the runners coming back off the bench, and he has a little versatility in his running style that might give his rider some options.
Race Summary Not a whole lot of serious pace signed on in here, and Declared has shown a bit of positional speed in the past that may serve him well here. Think his baseline effort is going to be really tough to beat in here if he's anywhere close to cranked off the bench.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #7
#4 Alation Think she's in with a mid-range price chance, as she has been a fairly honest finisher and finally graduated with a nice score in the last race of her campaign last year. Interesting enough.
#8 Justice or Appeal She draws well to prompt the other pace drawn further inside, but her best game comes on the front end and she might have to work to get there. Obvious player, but I have mild concerns about the race shape with these.
#9 Straight Madness Late runner would benefit if the pace showed up and folded late, but I worry she's along just a bit too slowly to punch home today. Not impossible, but seems more likely underneath.
Race Summary #3 Protectthewitness makes a lot of sense in here with her best, but her only local try wasn't much, and I'd be willing to let her beat me if the price starts getting short.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #8
#3 Im a Modest Man Think there are a few intriguing Turfway tries on his page, and I'm willing to forgive the Keeneland run in hopes the move back to synthetic footing helps the cause. In with a chance.
#8 Whiskeymac He wouldn't be any surprise against this group with his baseline effort, but I worry that he's meeting a couple other potential forward players, and he has given away ground in the stretch call of all seven career races. I don't know...
#6 Blame B B He'll stretch out while going second off the layoff after a mild late rally in the comeback, and I think he might wind up getting a sneaky good trip tracking the pace. On stretch tickets.
Race Summary Im a Modest Man made decent moves in a couple of those Turfway starts, and he gets a weight break from the rest in here. Why not?

        Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

        Finger Lakes - Race #2
#1 SMART STORM (5-1) Chased speedy fave off bullet work and layoff, must clear early.
#2 COUNT DOWN (2-1) Towers over field on paper, save for his lone start on conventional dirt.
#4 BRODY’S WAR (8-1) Could awaken for new barn in second try at this level.
Race Summary SMART STORM chased the 7-5 winner and held second in his 4-1/2F comeback try. He finished behind short-priced winners several times late in his 3yo season. He could take some catching from the rail at a good price with a strong favorite to his outside. Bet to win and place and play a 1-2-4 exacta box.
        Finger Lakes - Race #3
#5 NOBLE JOURNEY (2-1) Twice-beaten fave when last seen routing, all-or-nothing in return.
#2 HANGOUT (9-2) Had tune-up, out-dueled the fave before closers arrived in prior try at this level.
#3 FIGHTER KITE (9-5) Controlled easy pace and drew away in well-bet debut.
Race Summary NOBLE JOURNEY failed at odds-on from on and off the pace at 1-mile and 70-yards when he last raced under these conditions in the fall. He worked in 1:02-4/5 from the gate to get ready for this sprint and will have no excuse in this field. Bet to win and place.
        Finger Lakes - Race #4
#2 BARBARA’S SPIRIT (7-2 Ferraro firster has kept busy work tab, need not be much to beat these.
#1 WABBIT SEASON (12-1) Marked improvement in second start while 5-wide on speed-laden strip.
#3 BOXED IN AND BORED (3-1) Chased 2-to-5 winner around the track at 4-1/2F.
Race Summary BARBARA’S SPIRIT upstaged a long series of workouts with a :49.1 bullet last Wednesday. Her dam was a Maiden Special Weight winner at Keeneland early in her career. Bet to win and place and play a 1-2-3 exacta box.

MON AMI FUZZIE is my choice. The big drop in company can only help this entrant today. This gelding should be given consideration just off the earnings per start in dirt sprint races alone. Looks formidable for the conditions of this contest today, showing solid figures in dirt sprint races recently. DEMAND RANSOM - In against a much less demanding group than last time out. The average class figure of 63 makes this one hard to beat. STORMIN EL PRADO - Appears to have a formidable class edge based on the recent company kept. Will almost certainly come out strong - I have liked the way this gelding has moved quickly to the front end recently.

                Parx Racing - Race #7 - Post: 3:22pm - Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $18,000 Class Rating: 64

                Rating:

                #2 SHOW SOME SKIN (ML=7/2)
                #6 FIELD LETTERS (ML=4/1)

SHOW SOME SKIN - The jockey/handler pair of Vives and Linder has a strong ROI together. This mare is in nice form, having run a nice race on Apr 26th, finishing second. Vives is up for another race today after riding on board this horse for the first time on April 26th and ought to know the ropes to this one a little better. FIELD LETTERS - Last workout was the second fastest of the day. Definitely on edge for a good one today. This rider/conditioner duo has been producing a very lucrative ROI, right at +53. Mare is a few starts into a come back here. Should give a top effort today.

                Vulnerable Contenders: #5 BACI (ML=2/1), #7 RISQUE'S JEWEL (ML=9/2),

BACI - Difficult to wager on this vulnerable equine this time out. Make her show you something in a short distance contest before you wager on her in a race of 6 furlongs. RISQUE'S JEWEL - This mare is always around, but just doesn't finish on top. Hard to play her on the top end. Finished third in her most recent race with a substandard fig. When I look at today's Equibase class figure, it would take an improved performance to win after that in this field.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Have to go with #2 SHOW SOME SKIN on the win end if we get at least 8/5 odds

                  # 7 NEVER HAVE I EVER (IRE) 7/5
                  # 3 LOOKIN FOR LOKI 5/1
                  # 5 PURE PANIC 8/1
My choice in this competition is NEVER HAVE I EVER (IRE). Has performed well lately in sprint races, posting a nifty 92 avg Equibase speed fig. Shows solid Equibase Speed Figures on average overall when measured up against the rest of this group. Put up a solid speed rating in the last race. Can run another good one in this affair. LOOKIN FOR LOKI - He has put up formidable numbers under today's conditions and will probably fare well against this field. PURE PANIC - This jockey and handler team has produced some sharp ROI numbers at this track.

Presque Isle Downs - Race #1 - Post: 3:00pm - Maiden Claiming - 5.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $13,000 Class Rating: 65

                    Rating:

                    #1 GOVERNOR ATWOOD (ML=6/1)
                    #5 VOORHEES (ML=5/2)

GOVERNOR ATWOOD - I certainly see favorable signs for this thoroughbred right here. VOORHEES - Trainer Hamm moves this thoroughbred to a lower class rank to face weaker company. Look for a nice race with this class drop.

                    Vulnerable Contenders: #6 LITTLE BIG (ML=9/5), #3 TWELVETWO (ML=4/1), #4 EXPECT LUCKY (ML=9/2),

LITTLE BIG - The speed fig in the last race doesn't fit very well in this contest when I look at the Equibase class figure of today's affair. Mark this thoroughbred as a questionable challenger. TWELVETWO - This horse hasn't shown too much in the last pair of events. EXPECT LUCKY - Tough to like the downward spiraling flow (36/31/25) of speed ratings.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Put your money on #1 GOVERNOR ATWOOD on the nose if you can get odds of 5/2 or more

Tuesday’s Den: Nobody asked me, but……..

You learn new stuff every week: apparently youth boxing is a thing, as in 8 and 9-year old kids being involved in national boxing tournaments.

There were a million kids here at the Westgate Hotel this weekend, most all of them for a boxing tournament in the Las Vegas Convention Center. Apparently some of the tournaments never got finished; some of the parents got involved in their own pugilism, and that ended that.

                      Go figure.

I was talking to one of the parents Sunday night; he had boxed as a kid and now his two sons do it too. Interesting hobby for a kid.

                      — Canada’s Stanley Cup title drought extends by another, with Edmonton Oilers the last team from Canada eliminated from the playoffs. 1993 Montreal Canadiens are the last Canadian team to hoist the Stanley Cup.

                      — NHL’s Final Four is loaded with hockey hotbeds:
                      Miami, Raleigh, Dallas, Las Vegas.

                      Odds for the semi-finals:
                      Carolina -130 vs Florida +110
Las Vegas -140 vs Dallas +120

                      — NFL QB Matt Ryan has joined CBS Sports as an NFL analyst; he turns 38 years old Wednesday— he will work as both a studio and game analyst.

He also posted this: “P.S. — this is not a retirement post” so he could pull a Jay Cutler and bolt the broadcast booth if a lucrative offer comes around, like it did for Cutler in 2017.

                      — One of the NFL’s playoff games next December is going to stream exclusively on Peacock, which is horrendous news; I don’t get Peacock, I’m not going to get Peacock, I’m just tired of being extorted for money by every TV network in the country. There is no limit to the NFL’s greed; they apparently banked $100M with this deal.

Braves 12, Rangers 0— Atlanta tied an all-time record, hitting five two-run homers in this game. Last time it happened was Oakland in 2019, back when the A’s had major league-caliber players. Matt Olson/Sean Murphy both homered in that game; neither homered on Monday,

Arizona 5, A’s 2— I’m sitting in the sports book watching this game when it dawned on me; I’ve been watching baseball for as long as I can remember, almost 60 years and it is likely that this Oakland team will be the worst team I’ve ever seen. They have no hope; they’re like the Washington Generals, the basketball team that always lost to the Harlem Globetrotters.

How does a team that is this bad get better? They’re moving to Las Vegas soon; people here ain’t going to be happy when the new team in town is dreadful.

Cardinals 18, Brewers 1— Nolan Arenado has homered four games in a row.

                      — Blake Snell has started eight games for San Diego; Padres scored 2 or fewer runs in six of those eight games.

                      — Arlington Renegades won the XFL title this weekend, but it was a bad look for the league. Arlington was 4-6 in the regular season, but they finished 2nd in their division. A team in the other division had a much better record, but didn’t even make the playoffs.

Seattle Sea Dragons’ QB Ben DiNucci is getting a tryout with the Denver Broncos; he played three games for the Cowboys a few years ago. I’d like to see Arlington QB Luis Perez get a look somewhere too; the guy has played in a lot of different leagues.

                      — Rick Pitino has added 10 transfers this spring; they have two returning players. Four of their transfers came with Pitino from Iona.

Tobin Anderson replaced Pitino at Iona; he’s added 13 new players this spring.

                      — NBA Draft Lottery is tonight; we’ll find out who is going to draft Victor Wembanyama, the consensus #1 pick this year.

                      — RIP to poker icon Doyle Brunson, the Babe Ruth of poker, who passed away at age 89, He won World Series of Poker bracelets, won over $6M in live tournament earnings.

More importantly, he once saved me a lot of money. Back when poker was on TV all the time, I got the brilliant idea that I would study poker, learn it inside and out, then get into tournaments and win a boatload of money. Uh-huh.

I bought two of Brunson’s books, got halfway thru one of them, then realized there was no freakin’ way I was ever going to make a lot of money playing poker, or any money.

                      Zero chance. Nil. Bupkis.

Thank you Mr Brunson. May you rest in peace.
