Main ticket: (in order of preference): 5-Devil Moon
Backups/savers: none.

Forecast: Devil Moon is an 11-race maiden and certainly not one to trust. After finishing second in five of his last six starts, the son of Malibu Moon appears to lack the necessary punch to seal the deal when the pressure is turned on. However, he is simply faster on pure numbers than the competition in this six furlong f turf sprint for maiden $50,000 claimers and actually ran a winning race in defeat when more than three clear of the rest in his most recent start. With the switch to hot riding Umberto Rispoli, the 4-year-old gelding should finally earn his diploma, and if it’s not him, it could be anyone, so we’ll make him a logical candidate to be a rolling exotic single in a race that might be better off left alone.

RACE 2: Post: 1:33 PT Grade: C
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 1-Shvere Arbeter; 3-Flatterwithjewels
Backups/savers: 4-Renegade Princess.

Forecast: We’ll pass the second race while using three of the five starters in our rolling exotics. Shvere Arbeter and Flatterwithjewels finished one-two in a similar low level main track claiming miler last month and meet again in a race in which ‘Arbeter once again projects to be the controlling speed while ‘Jewels almost certainly will inherit the role as the pace stalker. In that mid-April affair the former held sway to register a length-and-one half victory and could easily do the same thing again. We’ll also toss in the Phoenix invader Renegade Princess, a winner of her last two starts, one routing and the other sprinting, while earning speed figures that make her a solid fit on this circuit. She gets a break in the weights with the switch to good bug boy Aguilar and is a perfect one-for-one over this track and distance, having graduated facing bottom-rung maiden claimers a year ago January.

RACE 3: Post: 2:04 PT Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 6-Defensor Fortis; 5-Unzip Me Lord
Backups/savers: none.

Forecast: Defensor Fortis brought $80,000 last year at the Timonium 2-year-old in training sale after looking fairly decent breezing in 10 3/5 seconds over the bullring dirt strip. He was unable to make the entries until today in this maiden special weight grass sprint for older horses, but the son of Air Force Blue has been meticulously prepared over the all-weather Golden Gate Fields main track in recent weeks while recording several fast times in a work sequence that should have him fit and ready. The known element doesn’t impressive so let’s go with this fresh face for Jonathan Wong, who hits at a solid 18% with a good ROI with the first time starter angle. Unzip Me Lord hasn’t set the world on fire in the morning, but he should be tight enough for a good effort first crack out of the box. The barn rarely wins with first timers (trainer Carla Gaines is working on a zero-for-26 streak with this angle), but this colt by Lord Nelson from the high class turf sprinter Unzip Me likely will show better over this grass course than his dirt drills might lead one to believe. With leading jockey Juan Hernandez taking the call, you have to use him somewhere.

RACE 4: Post: 2:32 PT Grade: C
Main ticket (in order of preference): 1-Modera; 6-Love U Mean It
Backups/Savers: none.

Forecast: Here’s an inscrutable $32,000 claiming sprint for fillies and mares in which any one of the six entrants could win. For small ticket players we’ll zero in on just two, but we suggest you use as many as your budget will allow. Modera is class dropper worth giving a close look to in a soft field. She’s from a low profile stable (winless with just two starters this year) but is a fit on numbers and projects as the controlling speed from the rail, if such a strategy is employed. She’s run well for jockey Diego Herrera in the past and more importantly shows a maiden $40,000 victory over this track and distance last fall. Lov U Mean It lands the cozy outside draw while dropping into a claimer for the first time and switching from grass to dirt. Her sole victory was accomplished over this main track as a 2-year-old, but on the negative side is her lack of tactical quickness and speed figures that are average at best. We’re hoping that under these conditions the daughter of Smokem will produce a career top effort and one that makes her a reasonable contender.

RACE 5: Post: 3:17 PT Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 5-Stylishlyacclaimed
Backups/savers: 3-Sanger.

Forecast: Trainer Carla Gaines appears to hold the aces in this extended turf sprint for older straight maidens. Stylishlyacclaimed was absolutely given a race in his debut three weeks ago and seems certain to improve significantly with that effort under his belt. The son of Acclamation broke slowly and was allowed to lag to the head of the lane, then closed a big gap to split the field before galloping out full of run past the clubhouse turn. He gets an extra half furlong to work with today while retaining Victor Espinoza, so we’re expecting a much more serious effort while hoping that this time the 3-year-old gelding will leave with his field. Sanger, his debuting stablemate, has worked just okay on dirt but has a pedigree (Desert Code from an Unusual Heat mare) that strongly suggests he will be much more comfortable on grass. While he may be a down-the-road type for a barn that rare wins with first time starters, the 4-year-gelding is being protected in straight maiden company (rather than being risked in a maiden claimer) in a sign of confidence and might have enough ability to make his presence felt against this group.

RACE 6: Post: 3:50 PT Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 8-Ever a Rebel
Backups/savers: 1-Looks Rare.

Forecast:His outside draw notwithstanding, Ever a Rebel looks like the logical top pick in this maiden optional claimer for older horses over a mile on the main track. This will be his first try around two turns, and if the son of Bolt d’Oro can avoid getting fanned wide into the clubhouse turn he should be able to earn his diploma. In the money in all four starts, most recently when beaten a neck (two clear or the rest) in a solid sprint at this level last month, the Phil D’Amato-trained colt projects to get over and secure a decent pace stalking/prompting position and have every chance to put his significant edge in speed figures to good use. For protection, we’ll also toss in Looks Rare, favorably drawn on the rail and competitive on numbers based on his fifth place finish (beaten less than two lengths) over this track and distance at this level in early April. The Doug O’Neill-trained colt has trained well since, and with another forward move could at least complete the exacta.

RACE 7: Post: 4:20 PT Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 3-Big Sis Little Sis
Backups/savers: 6-Sell the Dream

Forecast: Big Sis Little Sis is a progressive filly from Golden Gate Fields with sprint form that makes here a strong fit on this circuit at this level. The daughter of Mr. Big is bred to improve with maturity, experience, and distance, and in her first try around two turns and her first on grass the Reid France 3-year-old should be set for her second straight career top performance. Sell the Dream is a first-time Lasix user exiting seven consecutive stakes races, most recently when third in the Campanile Stakes at Golden Gate Fields three weeks ago. Most effective when on or near the lead throughout, the Brian Koriner-trained daughter of Munnings has finished first or second in all three of her starts over the Santa Anita turf course but is a bit shy in the speed figure department when compared to our top pick. Both should be included in rolling exotic play, with the main punch going to Big Sis Little Sis.

RACE 8: Post: 4:50 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 1-Danz Till Ten
Backups/savers: 2-Donttestyourluck

Forecast: Danz Till Ten was given an educational run in his debut sprinting against tougher maiden $50,000 state-bred foes in mid-March and is likely to step forward considerably while stretching out from a good inside draw against this bottom-rung maiden $20,000 field. The son of Danzing Candy was allowed to lag far back to the top of the lane, was taken wide and then finished on his own courage while winding up sixth and galloping out with interest in a much better performance than the line will show. Certainly bred for a distance of ground, the Quinn Howey-trained sophomore offers an exciting gamble at or near his morning line of 20-1. As a saver, we’ll toss in Donttestyourluck, in the frame in his last two with speed figures that fit at this level. He’ll likely be forwardly placed, maybe even on the lead, and probably can be expected to at least hit the board.

Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Early Pick 4 Analysis

Yonkers Raceway has a 9-race card with the feature going in Race 7, a Fillies and Mares Open Handicap with a $36,000 purse. The $1.00 Early Pick 4 kicks-off the night, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 1

1-B Like Cruiser (5-1)-Holland returns, he is the usual pilot and Cruiser hasn't drawn the rail for quite a while. Both factors could help in a race without a recent winner at this class.
3-The Real One (3-1)-Will use this veteran coming off a win and fade the #4 the (7/5) program chalk who has won 2 straight. Stratton gets the call on this winner of over $1.5 million and he could work a nice stalking trip. Rolled the back half in 55.4 in last and can stay good for another picture.

Race 2

3-Real Lucky N (6-1)-This 11-year-old comes off 2 straight wins at M1 and does good work here as well (90-13-6-13). Steps-up but still fits with this crew and is worth a long look at this price. Brennan could get the top and not look back.
4-Keystone Dash (9/2)-This is another veteran coming off a picture and like one above is no stranger to the Yonkers winner circle snagging 9 of 49 starts. Has gate speed so Dube could work a cozy trip.
6-Brackley Beach (15-1)-Going to take a swing for a price and exclude the 2 morning line chalks (1-5). The short field won't hurt chances and the pace could be lively. If Boyd works a trip and gets close to the leaders at the 3/4 pole this 8-year-old could surprise at a large price.

Race 3

1-Dragons Lucky Lady (5/2)-Gets some class relief and should have enough gate speed to land in the 2-hole behind #3. This mare likes to win, and a pocket ride could work for a victory.
3-Cheryl's Shadow (7/2)-This will be a test for the 4-year-old but has a good gate speed and is another who likes to win. If Kakaley lands on the point and is able to steal a quarter the battle might be for 2nd place. Best to respect, has won 9 of the last 20 races and booked 8 wins in 14 tries at YR.
6-Millwood Bonnie N (3-1)-Not going to overlook this gal who has won 8 of 11 this year and also loves the track. The concern is the gate speed inside, so may have to grind it out and hasn't raced since 4-28.

Race 4

4-Rock Lights (5/2)-Drops to a more competitive level after finishing a beaten 5th against better. Team Stratton entry is 0-7 in 2023 but may have met a beatable field.
5-Twin B Raptor (9/2)-Broke a couple of times last week and will use anyway for a few reasons. That was the 1st start at YR and comes right back. Should offer a square price, gets a new set of hands in Bartlett, and this will be the 3rd start for the Estrada barn.

Pimlico Late Pick 4 Analysis: Friday, May 19

Fans don’t have to wait until Saturday to share in the excitement of Preakness weekend at Pimlico. The Friday, May 19 card features 14 races, including three graded stakes that are part of the 50-cent Late Pick 4. Favorites went winless in last year’s sequence that included the G-III Miss Preakness, G-III Pimlico Special and G-II Black-Eyed Susan, producing a $1,085 payout per winning ticket from a pool of more than $728,000. Here’s a closer look at this year’s Pick 4 with a suggested $40 ticket:

PIM 10th race (4:07 EST) -- All of the Miss Preakness entrants make their Pimlico debut, none more intriguing than MAPLE LEAF MEL. She led at every call in three starts against New York breds – two in stakes company – winning by a combined 16-1/4 lengths while being geared down late. Her speed will be tested, but her stretch run in the $100,000 East View off a seven-month layoff was visually impressive and suggests she can handle the step up in class. KEY OF LIFE, the only graded stakes winner in today’s race, set the pace in the G-II Beaumont at Keeneland, kicked clear at the top of the stretch and repelled the fast-charging second favorite in the final sixteenth to prevail. The cutback from 7F to 6F suits her well. AFTERNOON TEA arrives from Keeneland off a 7F maiden victory but is a longshot to consider, nonetheless, with the projected pace scenario. She broke sharply from post 12 to secure good stalking position, ranged up 4-wide at the top of the stretch and prevailed after an extended drive to the wire.

PIM 11th race (4:38 EST) -- BREATH AWAY, bumped leaving the gate, trailed to mid-turn in the 7-1/2F Sanibel Island Stakes on the Gulfstream Park turf, but the 3-year-old filly weaved through traffic and exploded in deep stretch to win going away. Her stablemate, fourth-place finisher Aunt Shriley, came back to win an allowance race at Aqueduct by 4-1/2 lengths with an 87 Beyer. She is today’s Pick 4 solo play in the $100,000 Hilltop Stakes at one mile.

PIM 12th race (5:10 EST) -- LAW PROFESSOR was rank entering the backstretch in the G-III Razorback Handicap two starts ago, engaged in a long duel with the favorite and tired badly in mid-stretch to finish behind two rivals who returned with graded stakes victories in their next start. He, too, bounced back with a sharp score in the Excelsior Handicap at the 1-1/8-mile distance where he is twice graded stakes placed. He backed off an early pace battle, cruised to command on the final turn and equaled the top speed figure of his career. RATTLE AND ROLL saved ground, gained steadily on his own courage and responded with his second G-III route victory when guided to the 3-path for the stretch run in the Ben Ali Stakes at the same distance of today’s Pimlico Special. He is the one to beat with three triple-digit Beyers in his last four starts. SPEED BIAS might be out-classed but he ran to his bullet workouts at Oaklawn Park with a win and two seconds in allowance company and has tactical speed to loom an upset chance.

PIM 13th race (5:44 EST) – Unbeaten FAIZA probably will be the most popular play in the Pick 4. She won four graded stakes in a row and is perfect in five starts for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert, who won the Black-Eyed Susan three times. However, with favorites dotting our ticket already, I’ll take a shot and go nine-deep in here on the grounds that it is Faiza’s first start outside California and the graded stakes rivals she defeated were 0-for-16 with two seconds in their next start, with no speed figures above 78.

Charles Town - Race #6

#8 The Clown	Hoping the presence of the other listed pair will keep the price playable on this guy, as he proved a good fit with the locals off the bench last out and has some upside in this second start back.
#5 Ragtime Riches	He found the right kind of level last time out and should be in line for a good trip while tracking the pace. Think he's one of the obvious ones.
#4 Cairo Breeze	He exits a couple Oaklawn races that were obviously a whole lot deeper than what he's going to meet here, but he's probably going to get bet like it.
Race Summary	The Clown has a little appeal at a mid-range price here, as he moves around two turns with some pace that might give him first jump for home and has some natural upside on timing today.

Charles Town - Race #7

#11 Brion	He looks like the one if he gets to run tonight, as he goes off the claim in this third start of the season, and he has been untouchable in his two previous local starts. Look out if he goes.
#1 Strong Fiber	There are enough sharp chasing types in here who might not see out this abbreviated trip, and this guy has a pretty reliable finishing history at this trip. Playable.
#7 Amidships	His form this year has been pretty unimpeachable, and he has dangerous pace that suits this kind of trip. Wouldn't be any surprise to see him rattle off another one.
Race Summary	Brion needs a scratch to get in, but he's probably tough if he goes, hounding any inside pace the whole way with his sharp speed from the high draw. Strong Fiber gets the call in the body.

Charles Town - Race #8

#5 Officer Stone	He has been a pretty one-paced runner at those shorter one-turn trips, but I wonder if that grinding kind of style might work in his favor to chase along and stay late.
#1 Lucky One	He was solid with that win right out of the box here last month, and he doesn't appear overmatched on paper while rising to try winners, especially if he has any improvement in him off the debut run.
#8 River Malbumoonrvf	He finally put it together when rolling a special weight group off the layoff last time out, and he's probably in line for a really good run of things while tracking the speed.
Race Summary	Officer Stone might be a decent price in here and has a little appeal for me while moving around two turns, and he seems capable of something better than that modest last try.

#7 ROSES FOR DEBRA (9-2)	Class will be tested for her new connections, set-up will be ideal.

#6 AMERICAN STARLET (5-2)	Fired bullet in final prep, barn 23-85 with turf sprint returnees since ’20.
Race Summary	ROSES FOR DEBRA is too good to pass up at 9-2 on the morning-line in her first start for trainer Christophe Clement, who excels with layoff types. Her company lines when she won her first four starts on Presque Isle Downs’ Tapeta surface are suspect, but visually she impressed. She is a half sister to turf stakes winner Rose’s Vision and should sit a dream trip off a rapid-fire pace. Bet to win and place and play a 7-ALL exacta.

Pimlico - Race #6

#3 ITALIAN DRESSING (6-1)	Often outruns her odds, livelier pace flow bolsters chances to do it again.
#1 ROYAL WHISPER (2-1)	Left too much work to do in troubled return, needs alert break from the rail.
#7 LIQUIDATOR (9-2)	Ultra consistent, doesn’t shy from photo-finish camera, projects ideal trip.
Race Summary	ITALIAN DRESSING rallied for a 10-1 upset the last time she ran 6F, held her own with a win and a second in follow-up route tries, and is all but assured a fast pace to run at on the cutback today. She won at 6-1, 7-1 and 10-1 odds in her last seven starts and is worth a win and place bet at another good price.

Pimlico - Race #9

#5 THUNDERING CREED (6-1)	Will be running late in speed-laden field, but will it be too late?
#2 TRAIN TO ARTEMUS (3-1)	Was 7/5-1-1 prior to latest, has speed but rated nicely when Paco rode.
#4 CAN THE QUEEN (6-1)	Defending champ is 3-5 on Pimlico lawn, with average winning Beyer of 99.
Race Summary	If the field stays intact for the $100,000 Very One Stakes on the turf and both Wesley Ward-trained runners go, there figures to be a fast, contested pace. THUNDERING CREED might run out of ground, but she closed fast the last time she ran on turf and got beat 1-3/4 lengths by Breeders Cup’ Turf Sprint champion Caravel (14-22, $1.67 million). Bet to win and place.

LANNY MAC - Multiple wins in this horse's life, all at CTM. Could add another win right here. The Nov 5th race at CTM was at a class level of (85). Dropping down in class ranks considerably, so he should be in a good spot. Look at this pattern of improvement. 82/85/89 are the last 3 speed figs. RYANWATER - This gelding is the longer price of the 'split' entry from the barn of Rycroft. Rycroft enters this one in a spot where he should fit well based on his last two speed ratings. Was in a $5,000 Claiming race at CTM last out. That event had a class figure of 85 and he is moving down right here in this race. A certain win candidate. This horse ran out of the money at CTM in the last race on a track listed as good. He should improve right here in this race under normal track conditions. I may not be the best handicapper in the world, but I know a good mount when I see one. Last three races before this one have been solid for this horse. Based on that, should do well in this race. SELF INFLICTED - This gelding has been posting some excellent workout times. Ran last time out against a better field at WO. The move down the ladder based on class rating points should suit him well. This horse is at the top in earnings per start (EPS). He looks nice in today's event.

NO SUPAH FOR YOU - The fourth place finish last race out coming after the long vacation is surely not a good signal. NEVVARE - Last raced on Nov 5th at CTM, finishing fourth. Unlikely to improve off of that outing today.

SPEEDY FELLAR - Could best this group here, showing formidable figs of late. Gonzalez has a solid win percentage with horses racing in dirt sprint races. COWORKER - The speed figure of 68 from his last contest looks strong in here. When a trainer brings any pony back this soon it is a positive sign.

FAVORITE CHANNEL - Today's contest is 6 furlongs. Hasn't finished in the money in a short distance affair in the last 60 days. Not the greatest of signals. 2/1 odds isn't enough for this one when scrutinizing the most recent showings. SOME LIKE IT HOT - The fifth place finish last out coming after the long layoff is unquestionably not a positive sign. PANIC SWITCH - Just can't play any questionable contender right back after she doesn't end up on the board after any long layoff. Didn't land in the top three on December 9th at WO. Followed it up with another lackluster effort.
