AlCimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

    May 22, 2023 | By Al Cimaglia
Yonkers Raceway has a 10-race program set to go with a post time of 7:00 PM EST. The 0.50 Pick 5 with a $10,000 guaranteed pool starts in Race 5. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 goes in Race 7, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 7

1-Stellar Yankee (5/1)-This will be the 1st start for team Stratton and is interesting more so because of the post draw. At this class, the 5-year-old has been a threat when drawing inside. In the last few months Yankee has been no worse than 2nd when drawing the 1-2-3 slots.
2-Coalition Hanover (7/2)-Dropped in 3rd, was pulled right after the 1/4 pole and got on the point. Raced well but was no match for the winner (#5) and the early action probably made a difference. Holland is steering tonight and expecting the trip to be less taxing.

    Race 8

3-Priceless Beach (3-1)-Didn't have the best of trips last time but is a player if races back to the effort on 5-8. Looking for a similar plan as in that race. Kakaley could leave, get on the point and it could be picture time if it is a well-rated mile.
5-Captivate Hanover (6-1)-Wired the $75k claimers last week and it was strong mile going the back half in 55.3. Moves up and will need a top try but could land in the pocket behind the one above or possibly on the point.
7-Leonidas A (7-1)-Has had issues and last week was no exception in the 1st appearance since the Borgata Final. Not sure if Siegelman will leave but has enough gate speed to get a decent seat. The pace should be lively, with a sharp steer the veteran could get a trip and roll by the leaders down the lane.

    Race 9

1-Fearfull Intent (3/2)-Just missed wiring the field from the 7-hole in last and is likely an odds-on choice here. Should be respected no doubt but can't completely trust. It may not matter but hasn't left from the rail in a long time.
6-Townline All Good (9/2)-There should be a decent pace and Gingras could work a nice stalking trip and catch the speed. The price will be right to take a swing, fits even though will be facing tougher. This veteran does well here (51-9-8-7).

    Race 10

1-Oakwoodnitownit IR (5/2)-This will be the 3rd straight start at this condition and came off cover in the last 2 efforts. Did rally but was pace compromised both times. Most of this field is stepping up or has missed time. Zeron should be on the engine or in the pocket and will have a big shot at closing the deal.

    $1.00 Late Pick 4

    1,2/3,5,7/1,6/1
    Total Bet=$12

      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

      Horseshoe Indianapolis - Race #2
#5 Spun Oats Think she has a claim on this one at a mid-range price, as she has a couple races on her page that stack up well with the likely chalk, and she should be finishing on well late.
#1 Loupit Think she's going to get bet in here after the debut run at Oaklawn, and something similar to that effort would likely be enough to land this one. Tough at a short price.
#6 Active Lane She didn't do much in the debut at 51/1 at Keeneland, but she has some upside with that race under her belt and finds a softer spot today.
Race Summary Spun Oats might be a touch more tactical than she appears at first glance, and she should be in line for a good run of things while making her local debut. Chance.
      Horseshoe Indianapolis - Race #7
#6 Dash of Simplicity She's worth a mid-range price look in here while getting back on the turf in this second start back, and she has some occasional finishing ability that most in here seem to be lacking. Interesting enough late.
#1 Stormy Wager She makes a lot of sense here on paper, but she's meeting a little bit of other pace and might be vulnerable in the final yards, and I'm worried she's going to get bet a bit.
#4 Chelsea's Strength Her form was pretty reliable last year, and she has some upside off the comeback run today. She's a bit of a question on class, but she should get the right kind of first-jump trip.
Race Summary Dash of Simplicity has a little appeal at a decent price, as she's capable of better than she showed last out and might be able to outfinish these.
      Horseshoe Indianapolis - Race #9
#5 Candymaker He's not going to be any kind of price in here, but the barn is aces with these kinds, and nothing wrong with Irad signing on for a Monday ride.
#3 Drunken Sailor He's the 'other' Ward runner in here, and it wouldn't be a surprise to see him run well at first asking, too. Take a look at them both on the track ahead of time, but the other runner seems more logical.
#6 Black White N Gold Firster might be a bit better with some added ground down the road, but he has a little appeal on paper ahead of this. Check him out on the tote and track.
Race Summary Candymaker isn't going to sneak past anyone in here with Irad named for Wesley Ward, but he's probably going to hit hard while looking well meant on paper.

        Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

        Parx - Race #1
#6 YOUNG SQUIRE (9-2) Slow works but necessary ingredients to produce a debut victory.
#2 UNION REWARD (5-1) Pressed and faded from post 9, hit board in prior 3 at this level.
#7 NORLANDER (2-1) Finished ahead of similar foes as the class-dropping, beaten favorite.
Race Summary YOUNG SQUIRE debuts for a barn on a recent 3-for-7 run with first-out maiden claimers. His dam was a second-out MSW winner at Parx and 9-39 with a $226k bankroll. He has little to beat so play a 6-ALL exacta.
        Parx - Race #2
#5 NEIGH DUDE (4-1) Duplicate of latest makes him strong value play for new barn.
#3 EBBEN (2-1) Soon-to-be half millionaire plunges for 8yo debut, vet voided claim when last seen.
#1 JARLIAN (8-1) Held off the 4-to-5 favorite to win, earned top speed fig, steps up in class.
Race Summary NEIGH DUDE came 4-wide for the stretch drive but couldn’t reach the favorite in an otherwise strong effort. He became eligible for this spot earlier this month and could return a quick claim dividend. Bet to win and place.
        Parx - Race #7
#6 BROADWAYCHARLYROSE (5-2) Steady and improving form, could hold tactical edge in this field.
#1 SUNDRIA (7-2) Ran 1-2-3 in first three starts, but lack of pace in here a concern.
#4 ONTHISHARVESTMOON (4-1) Has speed, has to carry it farther in third start off long layoff.
Race Summary BROADWAYCHARLYROSE was in tight while chasing the 8-1 winner, then tired through the stretch on the class drop to this level. She figures to be in an up-close striking spot in a field that lacks quality speed. Bet to win and place.

WHAT UP NOW J T is my selection especially at a such a nice price. Must be carefully examined given the class of races run lately. She has garnered very strong figures under today's conditions and will most likely fare well against this group. Overall the Equibase speed figs of this animal look competitive in this contest. KICKALITTLEBOOTY - Has to be used in the exotic wagers. Handler has strong win rate (16 percent) at this distance and surface. KNOW WHAT I MINA - Might best this group of horses in this race here, showing competitive figures of late. Will most likely be one of the early speedsters of the pack going into the halfway point of the race.

                Louisiana Downs - Race #8 - Post: 5:21pm - Allowance - 5.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $30,000 Class Rating: 90

                Rating:

                #3 MEANT FOR ME (ML=5/1)
                #2 DUKE OF CARTHANIA (ML=8/1)

MEANT FOR ME - I took a look at this gelding's finishes. He's almost always on the board. If you review the PP's for this mount, you'll see he has recorded the top speed figure at the distance and surface. A repeat effort in this event and this horse has a superb chance to win. Earned a nice turf fig on March 31st at Sam Houston. A repeat in this race, and this one has a great shot to win. This thoroughbred likes to win on different tracks. The switch in venue today may be a wake up call. DUKE OF CARTHANIA - I think Louisiana Downs players know a good thing when they see the jockey/conditioner tandem of Dominguez and Munoz. Their win percent together has been good. Munoz drops him down to this level. You don't need too much more data to believe this one will be one to beat at this level.

Vulnerable Contenders: #8 PEPPER JACK (ML=3/1), #7 COUNT DE MONET (ML=7/2), #5 OLD HOMESTEAD (ML=4/1),

PEPPER JACK - This animal hasn't been hitting the board in either of his last couple of efforts. COUNT DE MONET - Hard to bet on any thoroughbred to turn things around if there is no wager value to taking the shot. OLD HOMESTEAD - Usually I need a sprinter to have some recent success in sprint affairs in order to bet on him.

GUEST COMMENTARY: The Brain - DUKE OF CARTHANIA - 1st race back after being off 122 days. My historical data says he does well, coming back re-energized after an extended layoff.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Putting our cash on #3 MEANT FOR ME to win. Have to have odds of at least 5/2 or better though
                EXACTA WAGERS: Box [2,3]

                TRIFECTA WAGERS:

                  Race 9 - Allowance - 8.3f on the Dirt. Purse: $60000 Class Rating: 106

FOR THREE YEAR OLDS AND UPWARD. THREE YEAR OLDS, 121 LBS.; OLDER, 126 LBS. NON-WINNERS OF A RACE AT ONE MILE OR OVER SINCE APRIL 22 ALLOWED 3 LBS. IF RACE SHOULD RUN WITH FIVE OR LESS STARTERS - THE PURSE WILL BE REDUCED BY $5,000.

                  RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                  # 7 MARKET MAVEN 8/1
                  # 9 NIMITZ CLASS 2/1
                  # 1 FAR MO POWER 5/1
MARKET MAVEN looks formidable to best this field especially at a long price. He has garnered competitive figs under today's conditions and will almost certainly fare well versus this group. Has been running well lately and should be on or close to the front end early on. Tough to pass on this gelding with Gonzalez in the irons. NIMITZ CLASS - This colt has posted some nice finishes in his last several starts. Has been racing quite well and has among the best speed in the race for today's distance. FAR MO POWER - Overall the speed figures of this equine look very good in this affair. Has been running solidly lately and will probably be close to the lead early on.

                    Thistledown - Race #5 - Post: 2:50pm - Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $16,600 Class Rating: 80

                    Rating:

                    #5 GRAY ROYALITY (ML=9/2)

GRAY ROYALITY - Urieta brings her right back. I advise you stick with this hot mare. Mare won shipping here on May 10th and looks good right back. Look at this pattern of improvement. 51/58/75 are the last three speed ratings.

                    Vulnerable Contenders: #1 SWEET QUEEN BEE (ML=8/5), #4 BACKSPLASH (ML=5/2), #3 BLAZING ZENNA (ML=3/1),

SWEET QUEEN BEE - Just don't think she is pegged at the proper price at the probable odds. BACKSPLASH - This steed ran a common speed figure in the last race. She shouldn't show signs of improvement and will probably lose in today's event running that figure. BLAZING ZENNA - Hasn't been getting close at all lately. When looking at today's Equibase class figure, she will have to register a much better rating than in the last race to battle in this dirt route.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: #5 GRAY ROYALITY is going to be the play if we are getting 1/1 or better
