Washington @ Chicago (8:00 PM EST)
Play On: Washington -4 1/2
The Washington Mystics travel to Chicago to take on the Sky on Friday night. Washington is 1-2 SU overall this year while Chicago comes in with a 2-0 SU overall record on the season. Washington is 7-3 ATS last 10 games against the Eastern Conference. Chicago is 3-8-1 ATS last 12 home games. We'll recommend a small play on Washington tonight! Thanks and good luck, Rocky
Take Milwaukee-123 over San Francisco (8:10p.m., Friday, May 26 MLB.tv) The Brewers have been treading water of late after getting off to a hot start in 2023. They are expected to send Freddy Peralta to the mound on Friday and he will be looking for his fifth victory on the year. He threw a quality start last time out and expect another good outing on Friday night. We will ride the home team with a low number.
I'll take my chances with Washington as a +114 road dog in Friday's series opener against the Royals. Don't love betting on bad teams like the Nationals, but the Royals are one of the worst teams in the league and I feel Washington has a pretty sizable edge on the mound with Pat Corbin facing off against Jordan Lyles. Corbin is just 3-5 with a 4.47 ERA and 1.385 WHIP in 10 starts. Thing is, he's been really good for a while now. Corbin has allowed 3 or fewer ER in 7 straight starts, going 6 or more innings in 6 of the 7 outings. This is a plus matchup against a soft hitting Royals lineup. As for Lyles, he's 0-8 with a 6.83 ERA and 1.324 WHIP in 10 starts (all 10 have resulted in losses). Washington should be favored in this one. Give me the Nationals +114!
Mike Lundin's Red Sox vs Diamondbacks MLB Free Pick Red Sox left-hander Chris Sale (4-2, 5.01 ERA) has pitched better lately following a slow start to the year, but now he's on the road where he has an ERA of 6.00 over 27 innings of work. The over/under is 3-1-1 in Sale's five road starts for the season and here he'll face an Arizona team that has averaged 5.40 runs per nine innings over its last five games. The Red Sox have been shut out in two of their last four games, but this looks like a good spot to get back on track against Arizona righty Brandon Pfaadt who has posted an ERAof 7.65 through his first four big league starts. Over is 10-3-1 in Red Sox last 14 games with the total set at 7.0-8.5. 8* FREE PICK ON OVER.
Friday MLB Free play. My selection is on Houston -1.5 runs over Oakland at 9:40 pm et on Friday.
The Astros ran into some tough pitching in Milwaukee earlier this week, dropping a pair of games to close out that series, failing to score a single run in either of those two contests. Note that they opened the series with a 12-2 thrashing of the Brewers and we know what their bats are capable of. Here, it's all about starter Hunter Brown, one of the most underrated starting pitchers in baseball so far this season in my opinion. Brown checks in sporting a 3.08 FIP and 1.26 WHIP, allowing just 68-of-209 batters he has faced to reach base. The right-hander will be making his 10th start of the season and has only been asked to pitch on short rest (four days) once. He'll be starting on a full five days' rest here. Note that Brown baffled these same A's over six innings just last week, allowing only five hits and one earned run while striking out nine without issuing a single walk. Remember, Brown got called up to the Astros late last season and worked 20 1/3 innings, recording a 1.98 FIP and 1.08 WHIP. That was after posting a 2.55 ERA and 1.09 WHIP at the Triple-A level. James Kaprielian will counter for Oakland. He's been a disaster at the big league level this season, logging a 6.38 FIP and 1.86 WHIP. He did pitch reasonably well against the Astros in his most recent outing but still had to dance in and out of trouble, issuing four walks and allowing three hits over five innings. Kaprielian hasn't been able to consistently work deep into ball games and that's a problem when you consider the A's bullpen has posted a collective 6.56 ERA and 1.70 WHIP with four saves converted and 10 blown this season. A's relievers have been extremely overworked, logging north of 200 total innings and haven't had a day off since May 18th. In stark contrast, the Astros were idle yesterday and their 'pen has worked just 162 1/3 innings, doing so effectively recording a 3.16 ERA and 1.17 WHIP with 13 saves converted and only four blown. Take Houston -1.5 runs.
Jack's Free Pick Friday: Red Sox/Diamondbacks OVER 8.5
The Boston Red Sox rank 4th in scoring this season at 5.4 runs per game. The Arizona Diamondbacks have quietly been a very good offensive team ranking 6th as 5.2 runs per game. This is a very low total for these two offenses and starting pitchers tonight.
Chris Sale has been better of late, but he is 4-2 with a 5.01 ERA in nine starts this season while allowing 28 earned runs and 8 homers in 50 1/3 innings. Brandon Pfaadt has been a major disappointment in his rookie season, going 0-1 with a 7.65 ERA and 1.550 WHIP in four starts while allowing 17 earned runs and 7 homers in 20 innings.
Boston is 31-18-1 OVER in all games this season. The OVER is 24-10 in Red Sox last 34 games following a loss. The OVER is 38-18-2 in Diamondbacks last 58 interleague games. Bet the OVER in this game Friday.
Free Major League Baseball Pick Today: Cincinnati Reds +146 Action
Take Cincinnati (#901) (action)
The Cubs aren’t playing good enough baseball to be laying this type of a price today; just 3-8 in their last 11 ballgames; 5-11 in their last sixteen contests. Justin Steele might be their ace, but he’s been hit hard twice in his last three trips to the hill and the Cubs have only won twice in his last five trips to the hill. I’m going with an ‘action’ wager here – if Steele gets scratched for any reason, we’ll be getting the best of the number, by far. The Reds have won their first two games of their last two road trips. Hunter Greene threw six innings of two hit, shutout ball in his last outing against Chicago. And the Cincinnati bats just pounded out five or more runs three times in four games against the Cardinals. Live dog here! Take the Reds
Free Italy Serie A Pick Today: REGULATION Sampdoria Total Over 1.5 (+165)
Sampdoria vs Sassuolo
Serie A, Friday, 2:45pm ET
Sampdoria have been relegated since quite a while now, but they are now also threatened by financial problems, as they need to find money ASAP, otherwise this historic team will be dissolved during the off-season. It's uncertain if they can find the money (they do have a couple of potential buyers), and the chance of this club being permanently deleted is MORE than real.
Sampdoria will play their final home match of the season on Friday, against an indifferent Sassuolo side. They will field their best eleven and will try to give their fans a nice farewell. After all, this might be the last Sampdoria home match EVER. So we do expect them to go out and beyond their capabilities.
Sassuolo conceded Over 1.5 Goals in 14 of 19 away matches in all competitions. They have a broken defense that needs fixin' in the off-season. They have nothing left to play for, but to reach the 50 points they reached last season. That's it. And with just 1 clean sheet in L9, I do see Sampdoria scoring here.
First obvious choice is to take the Over 2.75 Goals or the Over 3 Goals, as we do expect a goalfest in this indifferent match. Second best option is to take the combination of Both Teams to Score & Over 2.5 Goals (-120). Third option is to take Sampdoria Team Total Over 1.5 at +165. We are taking the latter, as the odds are much more enticing. Sampdoria scored 2 in their 2-1 win over Sassuolo earlier in the season and beat them in this venue by 4-0 last season.
Play: Sampdoria Over 1.5 Team Total
Odds at Time of Release: +165
Line Parameter: Playable to +150, no play if odds lower than +150
Free Major League Baseball Pick Today: Texas Rangers Total Over 3.5 (-145) Action
Rodriguez has a 1.65 WHIP and the Rangers are one of the better-hitting teams in MLB lately. They have a .359 team wOBA in the last 10 days. The Oriole bullpen is pretty good which is keeping me off making this a bigger play, but I project the Rangers to score 4.6. This is a 3% client play.
Event: (911) Texas Rangers at (912) Baltimore Orioles
Free Major League Baseball Pick Today: 1H Total Under 4.5 (-115) J Gray (RHP), G Rodriguez (LHP) Must Start
As I tweeted about earlier, I'm very intrigued by this weekend series between the Rangers and Orioles. These are two of the five teams currently with a win percentage of .600 or greater. Who would have thought that coming into this season? Also, Texas (+112) has very nearly caught Tampa Bay (+114) for best run differential. Yet, Baltimore has the better record of these two teams.
When handicapping the Orioles, take note of the fact that their home games have seen significantly fewer runs per game scored than their road games. The average number of runs per game scored at Camden Yards this season is only 8.1 (O's averaging 4.3). Orioles' road games average 10.4 runs. They are the #1 Over team this season on the road, thanks in part to averaging 5.8 rpg themselves in those contests.
So my natural lean for tonight's series opener is to the Under. But I don't see much of an edge playing the full game Under. Instead, let's look at the F5. Texas starter Jon Gray has been lights out his last three starts (3-0, 0.90 ERA, 0.80 WHIP), so I'm feeling good there. Baltimore starter Grayson Rodriguez does NOT have great overall numbers, but he's also been “feast or famine.” In five of his nine outings, he's gone at least five innings and allowed two runs or less. Try the F5 Under here.
Event: (911) Texas Rangers at (912) Baltimore Orioles
Free Major League Baseball Pick Today: Grayson Rodriguez UNDER 15.5 Outs Recorded -115
Grayson Rodriguez UNDER 15.5 Outs Recorded -115:
Grayson Rodriguez has fallen short of recording 16 outs in 8 of his 9 starts on the season (89% success rate) while landing on 17 outs in the lone game he went over this total. This includes a start against tonight's opponent back in April where he recorded only 15 outs. The Texas Rangers have one of the most potent offenses in the league and are top five against right-handed pitching in most offensive categories. Rodriguez is a rookie, so the Orioles are going manage his innings and never over-extend him. The O's pen is also in great shape after only needing to utilize two bullpen arms yesterday. Let's ride this trend!
