RACE 1: Post: 1:00 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 1-King’s River Knight
Backups/savers: 3-None Above the Law.

Forecast: Kings River Knight was nailed on the line in the Sensational Star Stakes down the hill last time out in a strong effort that earned a career top speed figure. The lightly raced gelding returns to the flat course, stretches out to a mile, and projects as the controlling speed from his favorable rail post in this year’s edition of the Crystal Water Stakes for older state-bred runners. The John Sadler-trained son of Acclamation is perfect in two starts over this one mile trip, and with the switch to the barn’s “go-to” rider, Juan Hernandez and given the highly favorable trip he’s likely to enjoy we’re expecting anot her significant forward move. At or near his morning line of 2-1 he’s offers excellent value in the win pool and in the various rolling exotics.

RACE 2: Post: 1:34 PT Grade: B
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 1-Grand Tiger; 7-Tizz a Good Thing
Backups/savers: none.

Forecast: The two main players in this abbreviated main track sprint for state-bred runners are difficult to separate, as both earned identical 65 Beyer speed figures in their racing debut (on grass) when flashing early speed before weakening late to wind up third. Grand Tiger has no option but to bust out and go from the rail and should be fitter and tougher today after staying on well enough in the final furlong as the favorite four weeks ago. The Brian Koriner barn hits at a superb 29% with second timers, so this son of Smiling Tiger likely will be the controlling speed. Tizz a Good Thing is comfortably drawn outside today and probably will employ stalking tactics. The Carla Gaines barn currently is going through a cold spell, but the stable shows solid stats with the second time starter angle and this colt has trained well in the two months since he raced. Both should be included in rolling exotic play.

RACE 3: Post: 2:08 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 6-Big Bet Jafinsafa
Backups/savers: 1-Austonian.

Forecast: Big Bet Jafinsafa made everybody’s horses to watch list after a much troubled debut earlier this month, as the late developing Mr. Big colt overcame a slow start and severe traffic trouble in the upper stretch to wind up a fast closing third in a race he could have easily won. Today, the Carla Gaines-trained colt stretches out to a distance he’s bred to love, so with clear sailing and even the slightest of forward moves the talented 4-year-old colt should be able to handle this maiden state-bred field. For protection, we’ll include the sprinter-stretching-out Austonian on our ticket as a backup. Disappointing in both of his two starts to date, the son of Smiling Tiger adds blinkers, draws the rail, and almost certainly will try gate-to-wire tactics. Given the projected trip, he may get brave and take this field a long way.

RACE 4: Post: 2:36 PT Grade: X
Main ticket (in order of preference): 4-Closing Remarks
Backups/Savers: none.

Forecast: Closing Remarks returns to California-bred company after a series of strong efforts in a series of open graded races that includes a visually pleasing win in the Royal Heroine S.-G2 two runs back. The Carla Gaines-trained mare should find this restricted affair well within her capabilities, and a recent bullet half mile workout on the main track (:46 3/5, fastest of 67) tells us she remains on top of her game. She’s a logical rolling exotic single, though at 6/5 on the morning line she won’t be offering much in the way of wagering value.

RACE 5: Post: 3:15 PT Grade: X
Main ticket (in order of preference): 5-Ceiling Crusher
Backups/savers: none.

Forecast: Ceiling Crusher will be the shortest priced favorite on the card – we’re thinking 1/5 – based on her unbeaten (in three starts) record and her recent 15 and one-half length romp in the Evening Jewel Stakes against similar state-bred sophomore fillies. The only question is whether she can be just as dominating around two turns, but as a daughter of Mr. Big this stretch out to a mile should not be any issue. You can use her as a no-value rolling exotic single or simply pass and watch.

RACE 6: Post: 3:40 PT Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 6-Golden Microphone; 2-Strange Addiction
Backups/savers: none.

Forecast: Golden Microphone displayed good speed before weakening late to wind up third in her debut on dirt earlier this month while having every right to have needed the race. Back from her home base at Golden Gate Fields, she shortens up a half furlong, switches to grass, and goes for a barn that hits at a strong 20% with the second time starter angle. Against this modest group the daughter of Stanford may be quite capable of wiring the field, so let’s put the Jonathan Wong-trained sophomore filly on top and hope that this time she can see out the trip. Among the newcomers, Strange Addiction is the one to fear most. A rare Cal-bred by Good Magic, she brought $85,000 as a yearling and has done enough in the morning to warrant a good look first crack out of the box. We’ll use both in rolling exotic play.

RACE 7: Post: 4:11 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 1-Bus Buzz
Backups/savers: 5-Handsome Gary

Forecast: Bus Buzz won’t have Kangaroo Court to deal with today, so if he breaks well from the rail the speedy son of Stay Thirsty should be hard to beat, though it must be noted that he’s facing older, seasoned rivals for the first time and also other speed types that can apply strong pressure right from the bell. At 6/5 on the morning line, the Steve Knapp-trained gelding certainly can win but at that price probably won’t offer any wagering value. Handsome Gary is 12-1 on the morning line and is intriguing at that number. He’s a devout closer in a field that could produce a pace meltdown in his first-off-the-claim for trainer Jonathan Wong (powerful 27% with this angle). He’s also shows three prior wins over the Santa Anita main track. Toss him in somewhere.

RACE 8: Post: 4:45 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 1-Old Pal
Backups/savers: 2-Boss Sully; 3-Clouseau.

Forecast: Though he missed at even money when third against a similar state-bred sophomore group over this course and distance last time out, Old Pal deserves a chance to make amends. He missed the break and lost early position, then was wide throughout and was unable to quicken when asked in the final furlong. Today, from his good rail post, the son of Grazen should be able to draft into a ground-saving, second flight, stalking position and then have every chance to catch the leaders from the quarter pole home. Boss Sully, second in the same race our top pick exits, removes blinkers and projects as the controlling speed once again. Depending upon how much pressure is applied by recent gate-to-wire main track winner Clouseau, the son of Street Boss could prove tough to catch. The latter should at least enjoy a stalking trip and with another forward move can remain a contender throughout.

RACE 9: Post: 5:15 PT Grade: X
Main ticket (in order of preference): 3-Brickyard Ride; 5-The Chosen Vron.
Backups/savers: none.

Forecast: Brickyard Ride returned to winning form with an extra game win in the Kona Gold Stakes-G2 last month, and as the controlling speed in this year’s renewal of the Thor’s Echo Stakes the veteran son of Clubhouse Ride should be tough to catch again, the presence of The Chosen Vron notwithstanding. A winner of 10 races from 14 starts over the Santa Anita main track, the Craig Lewis-trained horse always is tough when he’s on his game. The Chosen Vron made hard work of it when barely escaping by a nose in the Sensational Star Stakes down the Hillside Course at 30 cents on the dollar in his most recent start. Equally effective on dirt or turf, the Vronsky gelding likely will settle in the second flight and then go after Brickyard Ride at the top of the stretch. May the better horse win the race that certainly is worth watching, if not playing.

RACE 10: Post: 5:45 PT Grade: B
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 1-Atomic Drop
Backups/savers: 8-Forgiving Spirit.

Forecast: Atomic Drop took a similar state-bred allowance optional claiming field gate-to-wire over this course and distance last month and is eligible to return to the same condition today because this time he’s entered for the $40,000 tag. The Phil D’Amato-trained gelding should be the controlling speed again and given that type of trip there’s little reason to believe he won’t win again. As a backup, we’ll use Forgiving Spirit, a four time winner over the Santa Anita turf course and stretching out again for a rare try around two turns.

Al Cimaglia: Northfield Park Late Pick 4 Analysis

Northfield Park has a solid 15-race card scheduled. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 11. The sequence has a $10,000 guaranteed pool with a very low 14% takeout, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 11

1-Lancaster Hill (2-1)-Came out of the clouds with a 54.2 back half to sweep by for the win at the same class. Was aided by a super quick pace, 53.4 to the half mile marker. Deserves respect, but the question is whether Davis Jr can win by wiring this field.
6-Captainofrocknroll (7/1)-Ronnie Wrenn gets the assignment as Davis Jr stuck with the one above. Will take a swing for a solid price as this 5-year-old has cashed checks versus better and it could be the night to seal the deal versus this kind. Chris Page has enough gate speed to land a good early seat and could be right there at the wire with a slick drive.

Race 12

1-She's Loveable (8/5)-Burke trainee tried Lasix for the 2nd time and won by 3 lengths over #2 in this field. The filly could be getting better, so that's why it could pay to use. But not liking the short price and not sold that she lays over this field.
4-O U Stacey (7-1)-Page steers the one above and Anthony MacDonald will take a seat. My guess is AMac will leave and look to get the pocket behind #1. If that happens chances for an upset at a nice price go up.
5-Sister Charlie (4-1)-There are 2 problems with Charlie, will probably be over bet because of Merriman and doesn't pass foes down the lane. Using due to the lack of confidence in the program choice, does show some early speed and could be a trip out candidate.

Race 13

2-Carolina Beach (7/2)-Tossing the last start at the Meadows in the slop, should be a player versus this kind with this post draw. Does well racing on the point or in the pocket and either one is a good possibility tonight.
7-Saulsbrook Genesis (9/5)-The morning line chalk should be driven aggressively by Wrenn and could be out and rolling looking for the lead. Has hit the board in 8 of 9 here with 3 pictures and should be a main player in a tough race.
8-Bernie (8-1)-Not looking for this veteran to get an early lead but Stahl could land in a good seat and be in striking range. The Big Jim 7-year-old can catch the leaders if the fractions are hot.

Race 14

1-Southwind Amazon (7/2)-The 13-year-old millionaire still can take down a field with the right set-up. Fits well with this crew and could be on the engine or in the 2-hole, and either can lead to another picture.
4-Bettor Than Spring (7-1)-Comes off a win and bumps up a few levels. Has beaten straight Open company here back in January, so shouldn't blush at the competition. This gelding can leave in a hurry when dialed on high and could land just in front of or in the pocket behind #1.

Hawthorne - Race #6

#5 Fast Jack	He's back off the bench after being last seen in a tougher spot at Mahoning, and he has the right kind of pace to get in the mix early. Interesting off the bench.
#1 Walker's Win	His six-race winning streak ended last out in stakes company at Oaklawn, but he should be able to find a really good spot while in touch but tucked in just behind the pace. Seems capable.
#2 Hela	He's probably a bit light to win this, but he has some decent finishing efforts on his page and would benefit if all the forward players knocked heads early on. Not impossible for a piece.
Race Summary	Fast Jack will meet some other pace, but he has been really reliable when racing over the local footing, and he might be ready for something better while racing fresh on the drop.

Hawthorne - Race #7

#6 Bal a Kazoo	He ran ok in that turf route debut at Horseshoe Indianapolis last time out, and he showed the kind of pace that should keep him in a good spot tracking the speed today. Something like his last might do.
#3 Sivako	He has some finishing ability that might give him a chance to pick these up late if the pace starts coming back, and he might have a little upside in his second start of the season.
#9 Act a Fool	Not totally sure what to do here with a guy who has won his two local starts very easily and will try turf for the first time, but I worry the price is going to get shorter than it really should.
Race Summary	Bal a Kazoo would be plenty appealing at anything like the 12/1 ML price, but I'm willing to sign on at something shorter with a decent try under his belt last time out in Indiana. Would love to see him get a perfect first-over trip while pressing the splits.

Hawthorne - Race #8

#5 Mamas Fire	Get a look at him ahead of this one on the track, but I wonder if he might be ready enough to roll at first asking in a race that didn't produce a lot of standout players for me. Worth a shot.
#1 Larry the Poet	Debuter goes for a top team and wouldn't be any surprise, and I like the fact that this barn's debuters tend to show some speed, and that may serve him well in a race without a ton of confirmed pace on paper.
#6 Tahoe Run	His better stuff makes a lot of sense in here, but he has had nine chances and is meeting some fresh faces who might be able to make things tough again for him. The move back in with the locals might do the trick.
Race Summary	Mamas Fire debuts in what might not be the deepest special weight spot we'll see here, and I'm hoping she's able to get away cleanly at first asking and try to make some noise in a spot lacking proven forward pace.

2^nd race [Clm 50000 N2L, 1 mi TURF] – (1) Saratoga Gaze will make her third start of the year and drops into the N2L condition for the first time. She has past early speed that would be beneficial at this level. (4) Snow Loves a Fight broke her maiden at Belmont Park last year with an effort that would make her dangerous in here. (3) Kannon Fire was a debut winner on the turf at Aqueduct in April, tried winners in a pair of allowances, and now drops in class. (6) Jolly Miss Jill was claimed from a similar level race that was meant for the turf and has early speed that she should use in her first start for Linda Rice who has strong stats with her new horses.
3^rd race [Clm 14000 N2L, 6F] – (5) Storm Shooter has early speed that he can use in this field that is not fast early. (1) Bastet will make his third start of the year after a third and a second at this level and gets a change to a veteran jockey. (3) Bourbon’s Hope was a winner of the N2L claimer last time. (7) Star Attitude has improved speed figures in his last three starts with a victory in a N2L condition just a week ago.
7^th race [OC 62K/N2X, 1 1/8 mi] – (2) Curbstone has three wins and a second since joining the barn of Tom Morley and all three victories were at the nine furlong distance. (3) Systemic Change won his last two starts with pace pressing efforts for Chad Brown. (1) Tonal Impact has top three finishes in his last 10 starts and that includes four wins for Rice. (4) Galt has two starts this year with improved speed figures and a second last time.
9^th race [NY, Md 40000, 1 1/16 mi TURF] – (2) Shoppingatbloomies was claimed in her first start of the year where she had to steady twice at odds of 5-1. (5) Lem Me Drink moved back to the turf last month and has a big jump in speed figures while finishing second. (10) Orange Freeze will make her second start of the year and needs to improve to her efforts from last year. (6) Bernt Again also got back to the grass last month and will need to use the early speed that she has shown.

2nd race – (6) Dog Red was a game second and looks best off the Kenneally claim. (3) O P Firecracker could perk up in a claimer. (1) Princely might appreciate a turf to dirt switch. (7) Chileno drops in class and should be a factor. Betting strategy: 6 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-3-6-7. Doubles: 1-3-6-7 with 1-5-6-8.
3rd race – (1) My Boy Tony (A) was a sharp second in his turf debut and will be hard to beat from the rail. (6) Curlins Incharge has late kick and could be a threat in the final furlong. (8) Lincoln Highway had a promising debut and should not be ignored. (5) Berrettini might perk up here. Betting strategy: 1 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-5-6-8.
