RACE 1: Post: 1:00 PT Grade: B
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 3-Johnny Paycheck
Backups/savers: 2-Ghostly Act; 5-California Bay.

Forecast: Johnny Paycheck finished third as the 3/2 favorite in a similar state-bred maiden turf miler last month but after going to his knees at the start to lose his best chance the son of Violence actually ran a winning race in defeat. He’s a six-race maiden and perhaps not one to totally trust, but based on his last race the Phil D’Amato-trained gelding deserves another chance. Ghostly Act has a steadily improving pattern, having finished third in his last three starts with rising speed figures. He should be running on late, and with another forward move could give our top pick some competition. California Bay closed a gap (and galloped out in front into the clubhouse turn) after lacking early speed in his sprint debut last month, winding up a better-than-looked fourth, and Jeff Mullins-trained runners usually improve a bunch (24% with second time starters) after they’ve had an outing. He’s less exposed than the other two main players, though we normally prefer a maiden to have two sprints before stretching out. You have to use him.

RACE 2: Post: 1:35 PT Grade: C+

Backups/savers: 3-Sheza Girly Girl

Forecast: Bella Renella returns to her claim level after beating a tougher field at Golden Gate Fields two races back but then finishing last of seven when overmatched in an allowance race last month. She’s not particularly quick from the blocks, but in a five runner affair she should be able to negotiate a decent trip. On pure numbers she’s a major player, and with top jockey Juan Hernandez taking the call, we’re expecting a return to form for the daughter of Clubhouse Rise, who has five prior wins over the Santa Anita main track. Sheza Girly Girl was given a couple of tough recent tasks, but like our top pick returns to the $20,000 ranks, and with two previous local wins she’s another that clearly can handle the local dirt strip. The veteran Richard’s Kid mare exits a productive race and should be doing her best work late.

RACE 3: Post: 2:08 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 3-Vantastic; 1-Time to Party
Backups/savers: none.

Forecast: Vantastic seeks his third straight victory in this starter optional $50,000 claiming turf miler after winning for fun over this course and distance two races back and then shortening to the Hillside course and producing a strong late kick to get up in time in a photo to capture a second level allowance event. Freshened for 10 weeks but remaining protected by hot trainer Peter Eurton, the veteran gelding show a steady, healthy series of workouts in the interim and can be expected to fire another huge shot. Additionally, he’s a five-time winner over the local lawn and is very fast on speed figures. Time to Party is another with an obvious affection for the Santa Anita grass course (three wins, two seconds, in eight starts) and returns to reality after being pitched too high in the Opening Verse Stakes at Churchill Downs (eighth of 11) last month. A repeat of his highly rated win two runs back makes him the one to fear most. Both should be used in rolling exotic play, with Vantastic getting the main push.

Main ticket (in order of preference): 1-Tom Horn; 2-Montana
Backups/Savers: none.

Forecast: We’ve got this maiden $50,000 claiming sprint down to a pair of contenders, and neither one can be trusted, so the best advice is to treat this race with caution., Tom Horn has faced considerably tougher foes than he’s seeing today in his first start for a tag, so based on his interior fractions the son of Grazen could get loose and take this group gate-to-wire, assuming he leaves cleanly from the rail. Montana is an eight race maiden with speed figures that have stagnated, but he’s hit the board four times, so if our top pick buckles at this extended sprint distance the son of Exaggerator could pick up the pieces close home.

RACE 5: Post: 3:12 PT Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 1-Free and Humble; 3-Unkept Secret
Backups/savers: 8-Ava’s Storm.

Forecast: Free and Humble makes the all-important class drop from maiden to maiden claiming, and in her second start off a layoff the daughter of Free Drop Willy should be ready to step forward and graduate. She’s solid on numbers, retains top rider Juan Hernandez, is guaranteed a ground-saving trip from the rail, and doesn’t really have a whole lot to beat. Unkept Secret was claimed for $50,000 last November at Churchill Downs and makes her seasonal debut for owner-trainer Paulo Capestra while eligible for ship-and-win money in her first start with Lasix. Second in both of her starts during her juvenile campaign (on dirt), the daughter of Secret Circle clearly is unproven on grass, but her numbers fit well and her recent workouts at San Luis Rey Downs should have her tight enough. Ava’s Storm gets a considerable weight break with the switch to bug boy Alsagoor and though beaten as the favorite in a similar spot last month can improve with a clean break from the gate. Toss her in as a backup or a saver.

RACE 6: Post: 3:44 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 4-Charlotte Harbor; 6-Everlys Girl
Backups/savers: none.

Forecast: Charlotte Harbor drops out of a series of much tougher starter’s allowance races and appears to have found a winning spot in this $20,000 claiming extended sprint for fillies and mares. Though winless in four starts this year, the daughter of Munnings has earned recent speed figures that are quite competitive at this level, so with the switch to top jockey Juan Hernandez the Vladimir Cerin-trained filly seems reasonably solid. Everlys Girl, a two-time winner over the local main track, lands the cozy outside post and projects to be the controlling speed. Given that type of trip, the Shaman Ghost filly, who managed to finish a nose in front of our top pick two races back when a good runner-up in a legitimate race for the level, might shake loose early without pressure and carry this field a long way.

RACE 7: Post: 4:16 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 6-She’s Got a Way
Backups/savers: none.

Forecast: She’s Got a Way had no real excuse when third as the favorite in a starter’s allowance affair last time out over the downhill course last month but gets a chance to make amends over the inner layout that produced a clever score two runs back. In fact, we have clear evidence that she’s more comfortable on the flat track than she is coming down the Hill, so at 5/2 on the morning line she offers a reasonable gamble to regain her best form. At anywhere near that price, the Peter Eurton-trained daughter of Tonalist is a win play and rolling exotic single.

RACE 8: Post: 4:45 PT Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 3-Established; 6-My Man Bags
Backups/savers: none.

Forecast: Established was a “much the best” winner for $12,500 last month and today is protected in starter’s allowance company by trainer Tim Yakteen, who appears to have made a timely claim with the veteran son of Constitution. First or second in 12 of 21 career starts and never off the board (with three wins) over the Santa Anita main track, the veteran gelding retains Kyle Frey and is a versatile type that can win on the lead or from a second flight stalking position. My Man Bags is strictly the one to beat, though he was a disappointing fourth, beaten nine lengths, when facing state-bred allowance foes as the 8/5 favorite in late April. The Mark Glatt-trained gelding remains protected in a sign of confidence and probably beats this group with a repeat of his highly rated gate-to-wire score two runs back. Both should be included in rolling exotic play.

RACE 9: Post: 5:21 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 2-Tallis 7-Keen to Go
Backups/savers: 4-So I’m Told

Forecast: Tallis was a tad unlucky when a close third in a similar starter optional claimer at a mile on this course last month after lacking room at a critical stage on the turn and then being placed in somewhat close quarters in deep stretch. The lightly raced gelding gets an extra furlong to work with and should settle in the second flight and then have every chance from the quarter pole home. His morning line of 7/2 seems reasonable. Keen to Go just won a maiden $50,000 claimer over this course and distance with a career top number and makes his first start following a claim by trainer Jeff Mullins. He’s also a first-time gelding, so further improvement is possible, and based on speed figures not much more will be needed for a repeat score. So I’m Told, second in his last three starts and a good runner-up in the same race our top pick exits, is just 1-for-16 in his career and clearly lacks a winning punch, but projects to enjoy an easy pace-stalking trip and remain a strong factor to the wire.

Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

Yonkers Raceway begins the weekend with a 10-race card. The feature goes in Race 8, a Fillly and Mare Open Handicap Pace with a $36,000 purse. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 7, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 7

1-Millwood Bonnie N (9/5)-Likes to race on the point, drops to a more favorable level for a picture and Kakaley will be between the pipes. All of those factors could be a winning difference for this veteran mare.
6-Tony's Mom (2-1)-This 4-year-old has been on some heater winning 6 in row and now faces a stiff challenge. Going to use in case Bonnie going off Lasix tonight doesn't work as well as planned. Bartlett has the gate speed to land in a decent seat. If this young mare is dialed on high, she may win despite not the easiest of trips.

Race 8

2-Karma Seelster (7/2)-Raced well in the 1st start off a 1-month rest and finished a beaten 2nd behind the one below. Chances on a picture depend on if Catherin is having an off night and if Siegelman can work a pocket ride. My guess is the 2-hole trip is likely.
5-Delitfulcatherin N (9/5)-Could be bet down, gets regular pilot Stratton back and comes off an impressive score versus this kind. It appears this effort will lead to another victory unless she doesn't fire fast off the gate as usually is the case, and that leads to a bumpy trip.

Race 9

3-Sauvignon Bluechip (6-1)-Ships in from Monticello, comes off a win and had to take the long way around to do so. My only worry is not getting off the gate quickly, but Brennan is steering so that might not be cause for concern. Yonkers record isn't shabby (18-4-1-2).
8-Stop Staring (9/2)-Twice beaten chalk ships in from PcD and the change in venues may do to the trick. Has the gate speed to be forwardly placed and was facing tougher when last seen here. Should relish the company and the price will be much better than it has been.

Race 10

2-Ballerat Boomerang (3-1)-Dropped, got on the engine, and didn't look back. Bumps up but that shouldn't be an issue. Raced the back half in a crisp 55.3 in last and the veteran can stay good for another trip to the winner's circle.
6-Alluneedisfaith N (5/2)-Steps up a notch after rolling over the last field at 2/5. That start came after shipping in from Wbsb and missing almost a month. Has posted 8 wins in 27 races at Yonkers. The 1st start for the Bako barn was strong and could be better here.

Penn National All-Stakes Pick 4 Ticket | Friday, June 2

A field of eight 3-year-olds are entered in the $400,000 Penn Mile Stakes this Friday, June 2. The Grade II turf test will be part of an all-stakes, Pick 4 sequence covering races 5 through 8. Only two favorites have won since the race received graded status in 2015 and only one winner went wire-to-wire. Here’s a look at the action with a suggested $21 play:

PEN 5th race (7:10 EST) -- ROYALTY INTEREST beat a field of mid-60 Beyer types as a debut favorite at Tampa Bay Downs, but the way the 3-year-old filly looked doing it makes her a solo play in the $150,000 Penn Oaks to lead off the Pick 4. She accelerated 4-wide on the final turn, drew off with an eye-catching stretch burst and was in full flight on the gallop out. PRINCESS BETTINA arrives from California after she changed tactics and went wire-to-wire in the $100,000 China Doll Stakes at Santa Anita. She is a proven miler with two wins and a pair of troubled thirds at the distance and can adjust back to off-the-pace tactics with the speedy HIDEWRIGHT AWAY in the field. VIOLET GIBSON ‘surged’ to win in her 7-1/2F debut on the Gulfstream Park lawn, then rallied for third in a one-mile stakes after the top two finishers floated 6- and 7-wide in the stretch.

PEN 6th race (7:45 EST) -- MAJOR DUDE won two long distance, graded stakes on soft footing, while the remaining runners in the Penn Mile are seeking their first. He foiled CANDIDATE’S bid for four wins in a row in the G-III Kitten’s Joy Stakes and defeated three next-out stakes winners in the process. He then ran second to Kentucky Derby runner-up Two Phil’s and missed in a photo-finish against stakes-winning grass miler Webslinger. CANDIDATE has been gelded since their most recent matchup, breezed 5F in 1:01 and change twice recently and changes riders for the fourth time in seven starts. BEHIND ENEMY LINES saved ground under a snug hold in the $100,000 Cutler Bay stakes at 7-1/2F, inhaled the leaders coming into the stretch and edged away under right-handed urging while drifting wide. RECRUITER won at four tracks, four surfaces (fast, good, muddy, sloppy) and at five distances in his first six starts. He used his speed to defeat short fields by a combined 18-1/2 lengths but couldn’t keep up with a fast pace in his lone graded stakes try. His sire’s offspring are 4-20 in turf routes but his dam was 0-3 on the lawn, beaten a combined 62 lengths.

PEN 7th race (8:15 EST) -- GORDIAN KNOT raced 4-wide throughout after a slow start and battled gamely when he suffered his first loss in four starts in the Pennsylvania Nursery at Parx last November. He tried the turf to no avail in his seasonal debut, but remains the one to beat off a six-week series of strong workouts. KEITHSENDSHELLOOOO finished 2 lengths behind Gordian Knot twice and settled for minor awards at the expense of multiple stakes winners Flor de Sombra and Ninetyprcentmddie – who are a combined 8-15 with $560k in earnings – so he deserves a long look off a :48 breeze from the gate in his most recent prep.

PEN 8th race (8:45 EST) – TAPPIN JOSIE is a deserving favorite with a 6-for-12 record, a bankroll almost as big as the rest of the field combined and a projected ideal stalking trip. But with room to spare on the Pick 4 ticket, hit the ‘ALL’ button in the final leg.

Charles Town - Race #6

#1 Rocket Dawg	He's not going to be much of a price in here, but I think he's going to be handful in this spot after facing better for most of his career. He was a good fit in the Mountaineer score last out, and something similar probably puts him in the winner's photo again.
#7 Chrome Heir	He might be just a touch cheap for these, but he's in the best form of his life while spying a third win in a row and has a claim on this while coming along late. Capable.
#3 Addy's Laddy T N T	He has the right style to track the speed and stay on for a piece, but he looks a lot like several others in here to me, so he's not a strong lean for the pieces.
Race Summary	Rocket Dawg figures to be tough in here, and while he's surely never getting back to the promise that saw him in with Epicenter early in his career, he probably hits hard with an otherwise soft group. Chrome Heir is most appealing to round out the gimmicks with the chalk on top.

Charles Town - Race #7

#3 Yolo Charlotte	She has to turn some tables from recent races, but I think she's going to be in line for a great trip while settled just behind committed pace players. Price might be just honest enough.
#5 Xanthe	She's capable of something a little bit better than she showed last out and has been competitive with similar in the past, and maybe the clunker last out gives believers something more appealing than the 6/5 from last time around.
#6 Tiz a Country Girl	She looks best of the pace and should be right in the mix early on, and it wouldn't be a real surprise to see her flip the script on the top choice from their last meeting. Enough to like, but I'm not sure she's a standout.
Race Summary	Yolo Charlotte has a sort of one-paced style that might play well in this spot, and I think she has a big claim on this if she has a mild step forward in her here.

Charles Town - Race #8

#7 Colonial Road	He has already had a lot of chances for my liking, but his form is pretty reliable for this kind of level and fits well here. A lot of his tries have come with better, and I think his recent baseline might do the job.
#9 Frank the Bull	He has reliable enough form to think he can land a piece of this, especially if he can get back to that slightly better two-back effort. Seems like he's one of the more logical ones here.
#4 Curb That Tiger	His form has been solid, and the better company gives him an excuse for the two-back run. Might be there late, especially if he can avoid giving away a ton of ground like he has in recent tries.
Race Summary	Colonial Road has fairly honest form that might be good enough here, and I'm hoping he'll be a playable enough price while getting another shot at this level.

Race Summary	MINE TO HOLD set a fast tempo in a tougher condition and finished second to Parx invader Political Mine ($97k), who came back to run second in a $5,000 route. He will need a passing gear with stretch-out sprinter C. C.’s WARRIOR in the race, but he found one the last time he won going a route of ground in November. Bet to win and place.

Penn National - Race #2

#3 JACK SLYE (3-1)	Reserved for a half-mile in route but stopped on turn when asked for run.
#2 GRATITUDE ATTITUDE (7-5)	Four seconds in last seven starts for twice this much, enters new barn.
#1 BAILEY COFFEE (6-1)	Bothered rival at break, decent recovery until deep stretch.
Race Summary	JACK SLYE appeared poised to strike from a ground-saving spot, only to fade under a hard drive on the turn last out going long. Like the cutback to a sprint in his second start at this level. Bet to win and place.

Penn National - Race #3

#6 IN A SPIN (8-1)	Rallied for three wins and a second in her last six grass routes, value remains.
#2 MY DIXIE LASS (15-1)	Steady check-getter as 3yo, kept good company, returns today.
#3 HEARTY CONSTITUTION (8-5)	Made first run at loose leader, won in lone turf try at this distance.
Race Summary	Trying to beat HEARTY CONSTITUTION, who tracked a slow pace and won her only turf start, then rallied into a fast pace to repeat against rivals who were 7/0-0-1 in their next start. IN A SPIN is worth a win and place bet at 8-1 on the morning line after she slipped through on the inside and held off the favorite to win for the third time in her last six starts on the lawn.

2^nd race [Md 75000, 1 mi TURF] – (1) Cant Keep Me Down will make her first start of the year after one race at Saratoga at 6-1 where she was difficult trying to get into the starting gate. (5) Diamond Status made two starts this year with a marked improvement when she stretched out to a distance of ground. (7) Tap It Up had the best race of her career when she had the lead in the stretch and came up a nose short of the win. (4) Volatility has consistent speed figures in all of her starts and now drops in for a tag for the first time.
6^th race [OC 62k/N1X, 1 1/8 mi TURF] – (3) Love Me Not won at this level in March at Tampa Bay Downs but qualifies again because the purse money was low. Trainer Gregg Sacco’s barn is red hot right now as he ships in from Monmouth Park. (4) Mondego broke his maiden last month at Belmont Park with the highest speed figure in the field. (1) Regal Kingdom won twice at Fair Grounds, then moved to the barn of Graham Motion, and finished fourth in a stakes race at Aqueduct. (9) Clever Thought broke his maiden at Gulfstream Park for Todd Pletcher at short odds and then had a difficult trip against winners at Keeneland.
