    Grade Descriptions:
    Grade A=Highest degree of confidence
    Grade B=Solid Play.
    Grade C=Least preferred or pass
Grade X=probable winner but likely at odds too short to play

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
    RACE 1: Post: 1:00 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 4-Greenbow
    Backups/savers: none.

Forecast: Greenbow continues to improve with racing and earned a career top speed figure when a sharp runner-up (flew home, simply ran out of room) in a similar starter optional claimer over this course and distance in late April. The lightly raced son of Runhappy is reunited with “win rider” Umberto Rispoli, shows a healthy series of workouts since raced, and should be along in time in this extended grass sprint that fits his style perfectly. At 9/5 on the morning line (and likely to go lower) he’s a win play and rolling exotic single.

    *

    RACE 2: Post: 1:34 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 4-Goldenspa
    Backups/savers: 3-Tenth Street Don.

Forecast: Goldenspa finished a respectable third in a similar restricted (nw-2) $32,000 claiming abbreviated sprint and today gets an extra half furlong to work in a soft race for the level. He’s most effective when held up early and allowed to run late and given that type of ride the son of Goldencents should be able to produce a winning late kick. The Doug O’Neill-trained colt will receive the bulk of our play, but in rolling exotics we’ll also have a ticket or two that includes Tenth Street Don. The son of Practical Joke had little behind him when registering a more than 14 length demolition of bottom rung maiden claiming foes last month, but he did so while earning a career top speed figure, one that if repeated today makes him a reasonable contender.

    *

    RACE 3: Post: 2:08 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 4-Jetover; 3-Mucho Del Oro
    Backups/savers: none.

Forecast: We’ll double the third race, an extended turf sprint for starter $50,000 optional claimers that drew just five starters. Jetovator is a five time winner over the Santa Anita lawn and most recently dug down deep under pressure to capture a fast sprint in extra game fashion. The veteran son of Grazen catches a favorable pace scenario and that projects him to be the controlling speed, so there’s little reason to believe the Peter Eurton-trained gelding can’t win right back. Mucho Del Oro is worth including on your ticket or two as well. The Vladimir Cerin-trained gelding loves the local lawn (four wins from seven starts) and seems likely to settle into a comfortable pace stalking position and then have every chance from the quarter pole home.

    *

    RACE 4: Post: 2:41 PT Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 5-Miss Joannie
    Backups/Savers: none.

Forecast: Miss Joannie has little to beat in this bottom rung maiden $20,000 claiming sprint for fillies and mares and seems quite likely to go lower than her morning line of 5/2. The Dean Pederson-trained daughter of Cairo Prince drops from the maiden $50,000 ranks for the first time, shows the blinkers off angle that we like, and has speed figures that are more than good enough to win against this group. The switch from grass back to dirt shouldn’t be an issue in a race that will allow her to be comfortably placed on the lead or in an ideal stalking position. She’s a logical rolling exotic single.

    *

    RACE 5: Post: 3:14 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 5-Reckless Spirit
    Backups/savers: 4-Seven Wonders.

Forecast: Reckless Spirit appears to have found a winning spot in this first level allowance turf affair after being a tad unlucky when third, beaten a neck, in a similar event over a mile last month. Today, at nine furlongs, the son of Tapit should be able to settle off what certainly will be a slow pace and the accelerate when given his cue. The Phil D’Amato-trained gelding retains top rider Juan Hernandez, is strong on speed figures, and probably will go a bit lower than his listed morning line of 8/5. Seven Wonders should be included on a ticket or two as a saver. He’s certain to inherit a nice stalking trip and be a legitimate threat repeat after his most recent race, a sharp runner-up performance with a career top speed figure over 10 furlongs at this level in mid-March.

    *

    RACE 6: Post: 3:44 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 5-Mitico
    Backups/savers: 7-Wegonahavagoodtime.

Forecast: Mitico closed a gap in a quick race for this level last month and today won’t have to deal with the kind of early speed that he faced in that highly rated affair won by Sawasdee. Most effective when he can be on the lead or within striking range throughout, the son of Dialed In always tries hard and is properly spotted in this restricted (nw-3) $20,000 main track sprint. Regular rider Jose Valdivia stays aboard and knows him well. Wegonahavagoodtime has form at Los Alamitos that makes him fairly competitive and has hit the board (with one win) in all four starts over the local dirt strip. Her gets a break in the weights with the switch to good bug boy Aguilar and should have a strong pace presence throughout.

    *

    RACE 7: Post: 4:14 PT Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 5-Neon Lights; 2-Watsonville
    Backups/savers: 7-Pure Fire.

Forecast: Neon Lights probably was best when nosed out in a similar maiden turf dash last month – he was forced to steady when impeded by a lugging out rival at the furlong pole - and with another forward move and with an extra half furlong to work with the Irish-bred gelding should be hard to contain in this maiden affair for older runners. The Steve Knapp-trained sophomore apparently prefers to be held up a bit early and then cut loose late and given that type of ride he’ll have every chance to be along in time. Watsonville exits the same race as our top pick, winding up a respectable fourth in his debut. The son of Jack Milton seems sure to improve with that bit of experience behind him, and with top jockey Juan Hernandez riding him back, the Mark Glatt-trained colt is a “must use” at 6-1 on the morning line. Pure Fire displayed ability in a pair starts last summer as an early 2-year-old, closing well to be third in the Fasig-Tipton Futurity over five furlongs on dirt and then winding up fourth behind Havnameltdown in a fast dash at Del Mar. The son of Practical Joke returns with a steady series of workouts that should have him fit enough, so at this extended sprint distance the John Sadler-trained colt is a contender as potentially the race’s most dangerous deep closer. We suspect he’s better than his morning line of 8-1 gives him credit for, so toss him in somewhere.

    *

    RACE 8: Post: 4:44 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 7-Anywho; 2-Window Shopping
    Backups/savers: none.

Forecast: Anywho could not have been more impressive when remaining unbeaten in two starts in a fast, highly rated extended sprint for first level allowance foes while earning a stakes quality speed figure. She was subsequently flown to Churchill Downs for the Eight Belles Stakes but came up with a fever was never entered. Recent works have been impressive and indicate she is fit, healthy, and spot on for another major performance, so in her first start around two turns and in her first facing graded stakes competition the daughter of Bold ‘Oro will get tested, for sure. She projects to enjoy an ideal pace stalking trip behind Doinitthehardway and then have every chance to seal the deal when the pressure is turned on. Window Shopping is worth including on your ticket as well. A troubled third in the Santa Anita Oaks-G2 behind Faiza, the daughter of American Pharoah ran into a roadblock on the far turn costing her valuable momentum, and while she wasn’t going to catch the winner the Richard Mandella-trained filly almost certainly would have been second. Best when patiently ridden, she will be dangerous from off the pace if the early fractions are quick enough to compliment her style.

    *

    RACE 9: Post: 5:14 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 3-Moody Jim
    Backups/savers: none.

Forecast: Moody Jim moves up a notch on the class ladder after winning a $25,000 seller over this course and distance three weeks ago with a speed figure that is considerably stronger than par for this level. Even if he regresses just a bit, the Irish-bred 7-year-old should be able to win right back in a race that projects to have only moderate early splits. Capable of winning gate to wire or from a mid-pack stalking position, the Jeff Mullins-trained gelding retains top rider Juan Hernandez, who can assess the race flow and choose or adjust his strategy. At 9/5 on the morning line he’s a win play and rolling exotic single.

Al Cimaglia: Meadowlands Early Pick 4 Analysis

      June 3, 2023 | By Al Cimaglia
The Meadowlands has a competitive 13-race card to wrap up the weekend of harness action. The 0.50 Early Pick 4 starts in Race 6. The sequence has a $50,000 guaranteed pool with a 15% takeout, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

      Race 6

1-Raptors Flight N (2-1)-After winning 3 straight the 10-year-old still drops in for a $20k tag and draws the rail, which shouldn't hurt. Can't criticize the win streak but not going to single. Should be following the same plan of racing near the top of the stack and will respect chances of the streak continuing.
7-Magritte (3-1)-Not sure what happened on 5-12, just seemed to stop but the qualifier on 5-30 at Philly was okay. Will assume everything is fine now and has the back class plus gate speed to challenge #1. The Big M record shows 4 pictures in 7 races, that's a better win % than anyone including the morning line choice who has won 10 of 30 starts here.

      Race 7

1-Combustion (5/2)-The negatives are this will be the 1st start of the 3-year-old season and faces older. The positives are, put in 3 nice qualifiers, the last on 5-27, the usual pilot Todd McCarthy is between the pipes plus has a win and a 2nd place finish in 2 races at M1. There aren't any monsters in this field and will respect, could fire hot off the bench.
4-As Always (12-1)-Will swing for a price and this 5-year-old could be better in the 2nd race for Engblom on the drop in class. Has hit the board in 18 of 36 starts here with 5 pictures. Could land on top or in the pocket and should offer a juicy price.

      Race 8

2-Delayed Hanover (2-1)-Usually performs well at this level and Stratton should put the 5-year-old in play. Went off as the 6/5 chalk in last and faded down the lane. Will use on this ticket but wouldn't be a win bet candidate at a small price.
3-Harry Knows IR (7/2)-Will toss last in the slop versus better, should hold his own and then some versus this field. Could land on the point and not look back.
5-Balenciaga (9/2)-Just missed wiring the field in last at Yonkers and now faces easier. Looking for MacDonald to leave and land in a close-up seat. Should be racing with the leaders and be in the mix at the wire.

      Race 9

6-Early Action (5-1)-Raced well coming 2nd to a well-meant winner (7) in the 1st start here since 4-21 and was off 16 days between races. Will look for improvement at a square price and fade the 2 program chalks (8-9).
7-Livinthebeachlife (9/2)-Dropped and popped in last and now steps-up. This is the same level the Burke trainee finished a close 2nd in the slop on 5-20. Sears takes over for Gingras and has the gate speed to get the jump on its main foes.

      0.50 Early Pick 4

      1,7/1,4/2,3,5/6,7

The Xpressbet Race of the Week - 6/3/23

        June 3, 2023
Race of the Week – Summertime Oaks at Santa Anita – Race 8, Saturday, June 3, 2023
By Jeff Siegel, xpressbet.com handicapper and analyst.

The Lead: The good news for the connections of stakes-quality California-based 3-year-old fillies is that there is no Faiza in this year’s renewal of the Summertime Oaks, and with the Bob Baffert-trained multi-graded stakes winner sitting out the race a rare opportunity to secure valuable black type is available for main track specialists in this mile and one-sixteenth affair that carries a $200,000 purse.

        Field Depth:
Kentucky invader THE ALYCE LOOK was conditioned by Brad Cox through her first seven starts, most recently when finishing an excellent third at 30-1 in the Kentucky Oaks-G1. She since has been transferred to trainer Christopher Davis. It seems somewhat problematic that she can duplicate that effort in her first start in her new barn fresh off the plane with one half mile workout in the four weeks since that hard, taxing effort at Churchill Downs. There is only one other stakes winner in the field, AND TELL ME NOLIES, victorious in the Chandelier S.-G2 over this same track and distance last fall but winless in four starts since.

        Pace:
There are at least two in the field (DOINITTHEHARDWAY, ANCIENT PEACE) that want or need the lead at any cost, so a faster than average pace can be anticipated. Though the Santa Anita main track generally favors runners with early speed, the inclination is to look for a contender that can settle early and take hold late. To this handicapper, there are two such fillies to choose from (see below).

        Our Eyes:

1-THE ALYS LOOK: She won the Silverbulletday Stakes at Fair Grounds but was a bit flat when a distant third in the subsequent Fair Grounds. She then ran hard when an admirable third in Louisville, but her form suggests she needs to be within range early, and in a field that projects to have quick early splits, her one-paced, grinding style might leave her with too much to do.

2-WINDOW SHOPPING: This is an American Pharoah filly with untapped ability. A 16 length maiden winner over this main track two races back, she was compromised by a slow start and a roadblock on the far turn before rallying to be third behind Faiza in the Santa Anita Oaks-G2. Since that early April outing, the Richard Mandella-trained has trained in spectacular fashion. The faster the early pace of today’s race, the more dangerous she will be, assuming she is taken back early and patiently ridden.

3-AND TELL ME NOLIES: Unplaced at 45-1 in the Kentucky Oaks, this daughter of Arrogate hasn’t produced the kind of development that was hoped for after becoming a Grade-2 winner over a distance of ground last October at Santa Anita. She can get at least a piece of it, but only an extreme pace meltdown, such as what occurred in the Chandelier, gives her any kind of chance.

4-LILY POO: She has an improving pattern and a good stalking style, but the field she defeated in the listed California Oaks over the all-weather surface at Golden Gate Fields last month was decidedly softer than what she will facing today.

5-DOINITTHEHARDWAY: She was visually quite pleasing in a seven furlong allowance sprint score three weeks ago and she does show a gate-to-wire nine length maiden win over a mile three races back. However, given the projected pace flow (quick), she might be taken out of her comfort zone, though there exists the possibility that if handed the role as the controlling speed, she could get brave.

6-ANCIENT PEACE: She ran off and hid in a first level allowance main track miler two races back but found tougher company and an extra furlong too much to deal with and faltered to finish fourth at 3/5 in the Providencia Stakes-G3 on grass three weeks later. She tends to pull and get rank when rating tactics are employed, so it might be prudent to just let her roll. Given her quirkiness and despite her natural ability, she may not be one to trust and may scratch to await turf stakes next week.

7-ANYWHO: She is unbeaten in two starts (both at seven furlongs), beating maidens at Aqueduct last fall and, in her first start since being transferred to trainer John Sadler, easily disposing of stakes-quality allowance sprinters over the local main track in late March. She is extremely fast on speed figures and has looked terrific in the morning in several recent breezes while showing a willingness to switch off early and accelerate when given her cue. She is, potentially, a monster in the making.

        Most Certain Exotics Contender:
It will be a stunning to this handicapper if ANYWHO and to a slightly lesser extent WINDOW SHOPPING aren’t in the frame when dust has settled.

        Best Long shot Exotics Contender:
There won’t be many prices in a seven runner field, but AND TELL ME NO LIES could clunk up and get a minor award if a contested and quick early pace develops, as is projected.

Sending It In ($100 bankroll) :
        $60 win 7-ANYWHO
        $20 exacta box 7-ANYWHO and 2-WINDOW SHOPPING.

          #5
          Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

          Canterbury Park - Race #4
#3 Runaway Ready He might get one of the better trips here behind a few committed forward players, and he might be able to get first jump on some of the other obvious players racing from the back.
#9 Stagecoach Boys He didn't do a whole lot wrong here last year, and and there is at least some chance that he'll come back better than he was as a 3-year-old. Wouldn't argue with anyone landing here.
#5 Overly Lucky The running lines on his page make him fairly appealing from midpack, but he's making his first start since August 2021 and is meeting a few decent players here. Capable if he brings anything like he had a couple years ago.
Race Summary Runaway Ready should find himself in the spot to get first jump, and his form here last year makes him competitive if he's ready to go off the layoff.
          Canterbury Park - Race #6
#2 Marina's Gold She's not meeting a ton of other early burn in here, and she might find herself in a manageable spot right up on the pace. She has some decent back turf form that suggests she can be competitive here. Should be good for a thrill into the far turn.
#6 Lookin So Lucky She rarely fires a bad one and brings some more current form to this than some of the others. I like that she has a little versatility in her running style, so she's likely to be able to keep the top choice in her sights throughout.
#9 More Romance Not totally sure what to make of her here, but I think there are a few tries on her page that are interesting enough with better. Wouldn't be a surprise in the second start off the layoff.
Race Summary Marina's Gold has some pace appeal in a spot where it looks like the rest want to settle, and she ran really well in both of her tries around two turns on turf.
          Canterbury Park - Race #7
#6 One in Vermillion He has solid sprint running lines and comes off an easy stakes win at Santa Anita last month, qualifying for this spot by way of being a 3-year-old. He draws well to control this the whole way -- guessing he'll make short work of these.
#1 Casey's Law He can probably sit closer this time around than he did when far back early in the Iowa comeback, and he might be able to get a good run following the top choice if that guy shows pace to cross over.
#2 Xavey Dave He has been landing shares with stakes company in some of those recent starts, but I worry that this might be a stepping stone to a spot that offers a bit more ground, and I'm not sure he's getting the right race shape. Capable with his best, but I have concerns.
Race Summary One in Vermillion should be quick enough to control the tempo with these, and his page looks awfully imposing when you just focus on his sprint tries.

            Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

            Delaware Park - Race #1
#6 HEARTSANDDIAMONDS (6-1) Ships in off series of 5F works, can upset on class drop in bad field.
#2 LOOKIN AT KISSES (3-2) Towers over field if she carries over her last effort to the main track.
#4 GLADIATORA (5-2) Back-pedaled as the fave, gets Lasix, can’t be ignored off prior running lines.
Race Summary In a field void of good form on conventional dirt, take a price stab on HEARTSANDDIAMONDS, who chased the 2-to-5 winner for five furlongs before faltering at one mile for a higher claiming tag. She worked five furlongs three times at Pimlico since that start. Bet to win and place.
            Delaware Park - Race #3
#2 FIRST JOKE (3-1) Barn gets ‘em ready, sire ranks No. 9 nationally this year in progeny earnings.
#1 RITZ ON BROADWAY (6-1) Watch odds on this one, money shows on well-meant Robb firsters.
#3 TROUBLED DREAMS (2-1) Followed 3-wide move of winner, ran second against all debut runners.
Race Summary FIRST JOKE hails from a high-octane barn with first-out 2-year-olds. Perhaps she showed a sign of things to come with a :47.8 bullet workout at Parx May 9. Bet to win and place.
            Delaware Park - Race #5
#3 GRAND MACALLAN (8-1) Sharpened speed with blinkers, led to stretch twice at 7F, live longshot.
#6 LIBERTY STAR (5-2) Played to a steady beat in sprints during $59k 4yo season, starts anew.
#5 MR CASH (9-5) Stablemate of ‘Grand’ ran 1-2 in all three starts, shows fastest-of-71 work for return.
Race Summary GRAND MACALLAN dueled on a short lead to the stretch in his first two starts with blinkers but settled for minor awards at 7F. He faded chasing a torrid pace on Gulfstream Park’s all-weather track last out, but can make better use of his speed in this spot on the return to conventional dirt and cutback to 6F. Play a 3-ALL exacta.

Keeneland Select Pick of the Day | June 3, 2023

                      Jun. 01, 2023

Race 9 at Churchill Downs | Saturday June 3 | Post Time 4:55 PM Eastern
Arlington Stakes – Grade 3 | Purse $225,000 | One Mile and One-Sixteenth on Turf | Four Year Olds and Upward
                      Main Contenders:
Royal Patronage (6) imported to the U.S. from Europe last July and in spite of having won just three of eight races, none since the previous September, was entered in the Grade 1 $1 million Belmont Derby Invitational. He stalked the pace in second for the first mile and one-eighth of that mile and one-quarter race but faded to fifth at the end. His next two efforts, last August and September, were even poorer as he finished sixth in the $1 million Saratoga Derby and seventh in the Virginia Derby. However, something drastically changed over the fall, winter and early spring as Royal Patronage returned to the race on April 20 with a stakes quality effort winning in a field of 11 by a nose after running wide on the far turn. That effort earned him a 115 Equibase Speed Figure which, except for the 115 Set Piece (7) earned winning the Baltimore Washington Turf Cup last September, is by far the best (fastest) race in the field. Now set to make his second start off a seven month layoff, Royal Patronage should run even better and earn his first U.S. stakes win. Better still, Royal Patronage opens at 3 to 1 odds compared to 8 to 5 for Set Piece so offers decent value for win bets.
Harlan Estate (5) and Tiberius Mercurius (4) both start at 10 to 1 odds which appear high relative to their probability to run well. Harlan Estate just ran a career-best effort when second and beaten a nose by Tiberius Mercurius on the Churchill Downs Turf course three weeks ago. That effort earned Harlan Estate a 108 figure, the same as Tiberius Mercurius, who had earned a 111 figure when third in the race won by Royal Patronage one month earlier.
Set Piece (7) has won 11 of 26 races, six of 20 on the grass, and perhaps more importantly four of seven on the Churchill Downs turf. He was off for five months before rallying from 11th to third four weeks ago in the non-graded Opening Verse Stakes, a race he had won in 2021. He also won the Grade 2 Wise Dan Stakes in June of 2021 but won just two of 10 since, so his low odds are a bit hard to swallow insofar as considering a win bet is concerned. Set Piece is a deep closer so likely to be last of the seven in the early stages of this race but he can finish fast even into slow fractions. What’s a bit odd for a horse with his running style is if he doesn’t win, he doesn’t even hit the board, because he has just one runner-up finish and two third place finishes (to go along with six wins) in 20 career turf races.
                      Bets:
Win Bets: Royal Patronage (6) can be bet to win at odds of 8 to 5 or more, and even if lower than his 3 to 1 starting odds near post time is still a low odds overlay as his probability to win suggest those odds offer excellent value.
For smaller amounts (to win) than on Royal Patronage, win bets can be considered for Harlan Estate (5) and Tiberius Mercurius (4) at odds of 4 to 1 or more.
The strategy for Exacta wagers is to maximize profit so we will avoid the lowest paying exacta combinations involving Royal Patronage and Set Piece. Instead these exactas can be played:
Box Tiberius Mercurius (4), Harlan Estate (5) and Royal Patronage (6).
Box Tiberius Mercurius (4), Harlan Estate (5) and Set Piece (7)
                      Trifecta:
Royal Patronage (6) over Tiberius Mercurius (4), Harlan Estate (5) and Set Piece (7) over Tiberius Mercurius (4), Harlan Estate (5) and Set Piece (7).

                        Hot List Key:
                        A:
A preferred horse to watch B: Secondary horse to watch
*C: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 1st through 3rd
*D: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 4th or worst
                        * - 4 or more betting notches if 11-1 or more.
4th race [NY, Md Sp Wt, 7F TURF] – (7) Souffle ran the second highest speed in this field in her debut at Saratoga and now will make her third career start after a September layoff. She should make a significant step forward as a 3-year-old and gets first-time Lasix. (8) Lady Laoban was bet to 9-1 in her debut in April when she fell over another horse shortly after the start. (5) Snowy Evening had a third and a second in recent turf starts. (4) Cerretta was third in her first start of the year.
5th race [Clm 25000, 6F] – (4) Lohengrin Two will drop back to the claiming ranks when last seen he was a winner. The pace projector puts him on the lead. (6) Heir Port has been claimed three times recently for $16,000 to $25,000 and also has early speed. (1) No More Talk was a winner last time at Belmont Park in a $16,000 claimer with a stalking move which could be a good position in this pace scenario. (3) Bronx Bomber is a veteran of this claiming level and a trifecta probable.
6th race [Alw 95000 N1X, 6F TURF] – (7) Anna Karenine (C) was bet down from 4-1 to 2-1 at Aqueduct in April and ran third after having to take up late in the race. (10) Gal in a Rush made her 2023 debut in April in a similar spot and rallied to miss the win by a nose in a fast race. (1) Redifined won her first career start at Belmont a year ago and then tried three stakes races where she was second in the Matron (G3). (3) Gun Boat has been off for a year and used her speed to finish third in a Gulfstfream stakes race. She will get first time Lasix.
7th race [Md Sp Wt, 1 1/16 mi TURF] – (6) Ohana Honor (A) made his first turf start in April at the Big A where he steadied and rallied for third beaten by a half-length for the win. (7) Fly Right faced strong fields in all three of his starts last year when he missed by a neck in his Saratoga debut behind a stakes winner, then tried a Grade 3, and in November was third behind a return winner and eventual stakes winner. (4) Balthazar get blinkers on after a pair of close seconds as Santa Anita and Keeneland. (2) Cumberland returns from a March layoff when he missed a maiden victory by a head at Gulfstream Park.
Best bets: Souffle (4th); Lohengrin Two (5th). Best value: Anna Karenine (6th); Ohana Honor (7th).
