Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

    June 5, 2023 | By Al Cimaglia
Yonkers Raceway has a 12-race card in place. The feature goes in Race 8, an Open Handicap Pace with a $36,000 purse. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 9, and the sequence will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 9 (9:40 PM EST)

1-Delightful Dude N (9/2)-Might be overlooked and could be a player at this level from the rail. Will excuse the last race from post 7, stayed inside and did close in 54.4. Marohn needs to provide a sharp steer and has the gate speed to race at the top of the stack.
5-Kingsville (4-1)-This 4-year-old could be a serious player if Joe B guns out and lands on the point. Have to believe that will be the plan in a half-mile race.
6-Fortify (7/2)-Comes off a gate to wire score versus a stronger group than this and Brennan sticks here over #5. The win was from the rail, will need a good trip and has enough gate speed to land in a decent seat. This is a nice spot to double up.

    Race 10 (10:00 PM EST)

4-Night Hawk (8/5)-Made its YR debut on 5-29 and was off 24 days between starts. Was driven aggressively to get the lead and then landed in the pocket behind the even money chalk. Pulled before the final turn and couldn't catch a well-meant winner. Should be tighter, gets class relief and all systems should be "go" for a picture.

    Race 11 (10:20 PM EST)-

3-Splash Brother (3-1)-Will toss the last start from the 7-hole in a race with a dull pace versus better. This is a meaningful drop in class, and Zeron should put in play once the wings fold.
4-Air Force Hanover (8-1)-Not my favorite horse but the trainer change to the Daguet barn on 3-24 has made a difference. This is another case of overlooking the last line from the 7-hole. Could offer a nice price and has become competitive again. Will look for a return to previous form and to be leaving to get a close-up seat.

    Race 12 (10:40 PM EST)

1-King James Express (5/2)-Comes off a gate to wire score and was perfectly driven as Joe B got a 29.4 second quarter breather. Tonight's 2nd morning line chalk #5 went off at 3/5 and was as flat as a pancake starting from post 1. A similar trip could happen and can't find a reason to not endorse here.
7-Theflyingrock (6-1)-Raced against the one above last week, was handled conservatively off the gate and came away 5th as there were a few leavers. Sat inside and showed some life on the back side and looked full of pace with nowhere to go down the lane. Bartlett won with the Engblom pupil at this level back on 4-5 and should be a solid price here. Will look for a meaningful try in the 3rd straight YR start since returning from Philly.

    $1.00 Late Pick 4

Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Pick 5 Analysis

      June 5, 2023 | By Al Cimaglia
Yonkers Raceway has a 12-race card to begin the week. The 0.50 Pick 5 starts in Race 5, it has a $10,000 guaranteed pool, and it will be my focus. All of the races in the sequence except for Race 8 will be at a shorter half mile distance.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

      Race 5 (8:20 PM EST)

1-San Domino A (5/2)-This Burke trainee has lost some off his fast ball but the 10-year-old makes sense here. Has enough gate speed to be 1-2 off the gate and the shorter distance could help this veteran take a picture.
6-Rock Diamonds N (3-1)-Has won 4 in a row and is 4 for 5 since joining the Jenn B barn. Can get off the gate and should fit with this crew. Looks like a main player and the shorter distance suits.

      Race 6 (8:40 PM EST)

2-Gamblingterror (12-1)-Will look for some prices in this leg, not embracing the 2 program chalks (1-8). This Stafford entry isn't reliable but is engaged when starting from the inside. Regular pilot Dube returns and sticks here rather than with #4 who won last week.
6-Boiling Oar (6-1)-Tried to wire the field when dropped to this level last week in search of a win but faded down the lane. Should be driven aggressively by Stratton who had success in the past, and the 1/2 mile distance may help the cause.

      Race 7 (9:00 PM EST)

1-Pyro (2-1)-Form has been dull of late but drops out of Open company and doesn't have to be at its best to wire this kind. This looks like a good spot for the 1st picture in 2 months but can't completely trust.
2-Townline All Good (5/2)-Bartlett takes a seat and he has taken pictures with this veteran at Yonkers. Like the one above, should enjoy the company and can be forwardly placed from the word "go".

      Race 8 (9:20 PM EST)

1-Captivate Hanover (5-1)-Got left at the gate last week against a deeper field. Dube should be more aggressive here and could get the top and not look back.
3-Idealsomemagic A (3-1)-Returns from London after getting hung the mile in the Camluck Classic on 5-26 and the trip should be much better tonight. Was off almost 3 weeks before the last start and could be sitting on a big try.

6-Fortify (7/2)-Comes off a gate to wire score and Brennan sticks here over #5. The start of this race will be something to see. Should be a threat if lands in a good seat off the gate and has a smooth journey.

        Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Presque Isle Downs - Race #1
#3 Goose Hunter He was really flat in that last try at Penn, but he went right to the bench after that one and now returns to the scene of his best career tries. Right there if he fires fresh.
#4 Colonel Poppy He didn't miss by much with similar last out, but I'd worry about taking him at too short a price if he starts taking action again. Capable with his best.
#1 Kotylos He is a pretty honest finisher, but he has had trouble dealing with the top pair in recent starts and might find one of them a bit too tough again today.
Race Summary Can't see Goose Hunter offering the 6/1 ML price, but I'd be happy to sign up if he does, as his local form has been pretty reliable, and he proved he could hang at the level in the October try.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #5
#2 Quick Quick Whit Think he's fast enough and drawn well to be right up on the splits in a spot without a ton of early speed, and he's a good fit with these if his baseline try transfers to the local footing.
#6 Whiskeymac He couldn't hang after hitting the top in the lane last out, but he's competitive with this type and rarely runs a bad one. Think one of these top two will land this.
#3 Pat'ssewingmachine He rallied with a little enthusiasm in the debut on the turf at Tampa, but I'd want a fair price to land here considering he ran first out for $10,000 and only faced four others. I'm intrigued -- but not with a ton of enthusiasm about it.
Race Summary Quick Quick Whit and Whiskeymac seem likely to find good spots near the top, and I am guessing you can get through this race without looking too much deeper. 'Whit gets the slight edge with similar trips looming.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #7
#9 Closethegame Sugar Can't argue much with the debut in which he was really well meant at Saratoga last summer, getting Jose Ortiz in the irons and scoring nicely from off the splits while taking some action at 3/1. Not sure what he's made of, but I'm curious to see what he has to offer today with a decent pace likely waiting for him.
#1 Bushido He might appreciate getting back on synthetic footing today after setting the tempo and fading in that stakes try at Keeneland last out, but I worry that there is a decent bit of other need-the-lead pace stacked up outside of him.
#5 Dreaming of Kona He should appreciate the move out of graded stakes company after trying a couple spots on the Derby Trail earlier this year, and I think this one might set up well enough for him to make some noise late while cutting back. Think he has a dangerous future as a seven- or eight-furlong horse around one turn down the road.
Race Summary Closethegame Sugar will need to bring something better than than he showed in the debut win at Saratoga last year, but he looked good that day and was clearly giving everyone some signals that he was ready to roll first time out. Hoping he's got a bit of class to him and can get past these late.

          Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

          Prairie Meadows - Race #4
#5 APRETTYLULABY (2-1) Useful comeback, class drop suits her well, will have every chance in here.
#3 UNGLUED (5-2) Dueled through turn and held second the only time she ran at this level.
#4 FIREBAUGH (4-1) Exits fast heat, plagued by slow starts prior, can’t be ignored.
Race Summary APRETTYLULABY faded from a good striking position in her return from and eight-month layoff. She “ran on” to finish third in her debut behind Espiridion, who ran third in a follow-up allowance and tested stakes company after that. Bet to win and place.
          Prairie Meadows - Race #7
#6 TEMPLE CITY RUN (5-1) Useful, albeit erratic, seasonal debut, projects ideal trip, gets new pilot.
#3 COUNTY JAIL (8-1) Another price play to consider from off the pace, been idle since September.
#1 SARAH’S BOY BLUE (3-1 Dueled through the turn on muddy strip and held second at 5F.
Race Summary TEMPLE CITY RUN broke in the air, caused a couple rivals to check sharply on the turn and faded to fifth while the favorites finished 1-2. He showed enough in that MSW sprint to warrant a long look in here and he could trip out off a projected lively pace. Play a 6-ALL exacta.
          Prairie Meadows - Race #3
#6 CHARMING CHARLIE (5-1) Looks like an all-or-nothing type on another barn switch.
#7 HIGHTAIL COWBOY (5-2) Shipper finished in the money in 13 of 21 starts at various distances.
#4 UNCLE CHAD (2-1) Trailed in return after good 5F workout, won off a similar class drop before.
Race Summary CHARMING CHARLIE was well-beaten in two starts as a 3-year-old in February at Gulfstream Park. But he fits the race conditions well for his new connections and has a strong freshman season to summon for a return to sprinting. Bet to win and place.

                Mountaineer Park - Race #8 - Post: 9:55pm - Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $8,300 Class Rating: 78

                Rating:

                #2 FLATTER ME PLEASE (ML=2/1)
                #6 ALFIE SOLOMONS (ML=5/2)

FLATTER ME PLEASE - Was in a $4,000 Claiming race at Mountaineer Park last time out. That race had a class figure of 83 and he is moving down in this race. A certain win candidate. This jock/handler duo has been producing a very profitable ROI, right at +110. He must like the track here. He just won over the track after shipping in. This gelding is in fine physical condition, having run a nice race on May 15th, finishing first. ALFIE SOLOMONS - Atop this thoroughbred on May 15th and Batista is back again in the irons in today's contest. Fletcher brings him back again. I suggest you stick with this strong gelding. I like when a thoroughbred wins after shipping in from elsewhere. It shows that they really like the track here. I'll take this gelding to win again. The improved speed figures over the last 3 races is great. Fletcher drops him in this race in great shape. A repeat of that latest effort on May 15th where he recorded a speed rating of 79 looks lofty enough to win in this event.

Vulnerable Contenders: #1 SEMINOLE JUSTICE (ML=3/1), #7 ESTILO VARONIL (ML=9/2),

SEMINOLE JUSTICE - This gelding is always close, but just doesn't win. Difficult to wager on him on the win end. It looks like too much early speed is entered in this race. This early speedster will probably get roasted on the top end. ESTILO VARONIL - Would have to get better off that fifth place finish last time out of the box to make an impact here. Can't wager on this runner in today's sprint of 6 furlongs. Hasn't even finished in the money in a short distance affair lately.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - ALFIE SOLOMONS - I always look at the equine that is utmost in earnings per start. If he meets my specifications I make a play.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Have to go with #2 FLATTER ME PLEASE on the win end if we get at least 9/5 odds

Race 4 - Maiden Claiming - 5.5f on the Dirt. Purse: $25442 Class Rating: 51

FOR REGISTERED STATE BRED MAIDENS, FILLIES AND MARES THREE, FOUR, FIVE, AND SIX YEARS OLD. THREE YEAR OLDS, 118 LBS.; OLDER, 124 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $30,000.

                  RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                  # 5 APRETTYLULABY 2/1
                  # 3 UNGLUED 5/2
                  # 4 FIREBAUGH 4/1
I think APRETTYLULABY is a very good choice. The big drop in competition can only help this one this time out. Have to wager on this filly with the sound earnings per start in dirt sprint contests. Tough to pass on this filly with Birzer in the irons. UNGLUED - Has competitive front-end speed and will almost certainly fare well against this group of horses in this race. Last time out, this filly ran against a stronger field. FIREBAUGH - This racer has to be in form coming back to race so soon. Should expect this equine to be close at the finish versus these horses.

Race 1 - Maiden Claiming - 5.5f on the Dirt. Purse: $17000 Class Rating: 26

FOR REGISTERED OHIO FOALS MAIDENS, FILLIES AND MARES THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD. THREE YEAR OLDS, 119 LBS.; OLDER, 123 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $7,500.

                    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                    # 5 LADYBUGGIN 8/5
                    # 1 LISTEN LINDA LOU 15/1
                    # 2 HONEYBEE STINGS 5/1
My choice in here is LADYBUGGIN. Reason to like this filly as she has in the saddle one of the best jocks using winning percentages over the last month. She looks competitive in this slot and I expect will be on the lead or close at the halfway point. Has been moving in the most competitive company of the group recently. LISTEN LINDA LOU - In against a much softer bunch than last time out. There is a quite good chance that this entry's late pace will improve on Lasix. HONEYBEE STINGS - Looks strong to be up on the lead at the first call. The Equibase class rating of today's affair is much lower than her last affair.

                      Parx Racing - Race #6 - Post: 2:59pm - Maiden Claiming - 8.3 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $24,000 Class Rating: 60

                      Rating:

                      #2 LAST DREAM (ML=4/1)
                      #7 FIRST TO LAST (ML=5/1)

LAST DREAM - Jockey jumped on this gelding's back for the first ride on May 17th. Should be acquainted with the animal even better this race. Gelding made up a ton of ground in a 6 furlongs race. May go better on the stretchout. FIRST TO LAST - This is a fairly classic handicapping angle. Play a thoroughbred that finished in the place spot in a maiden race last time out but finished well ahead of the show horse. Have to make this colt a win candidate; he comes off a nice contest on May 9th.

                      Vulnerable Contenders: #1 GOLDEN WILDCAT (ML=3/1), #4 DISTURBED (ML=9/2), #6 STORMY FIRE (ML=6/1),

GOLDEN WILDCAT - This gelding finished outside the top 3 on May 6th and wasn't close to winning last out either. Improbable that the speed fig he notched on May 16th will hold up in this event. DISTURBED - This gelding hasn't been showing me anything positive in the last couple of outings. STORMY FIRE - Didn't show much run last time out. Probably won't make an impact in today's event. Most unsatisfactory speed rating last out at Parx Racing at 6 furlongs. Don't feel this horse will improve too much in today's event.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Put your money on #2 LAST DREAM on the nose if you can get odds of 7/5 or more
