Hawthorne - Race #3

#5 Larry the Poet	He scratched out of a spot recently and will go in this route spot instead, and he probably has some room to come forward in the second start off the bench. He was pretty frosty on the board for a debuter from this barn, so I'm thinking he probably needed that one.
#3 Tahoe Run	No doubt he's the one to beat, but he's not going to offer much of a price here, and he has already had more than his share of chances in which he was in the mix late and settled for second. Capable, but I wonder first if he's overbet, and second if he might be better sprinting right now.
#1 J J's Solution	I don't think he's overmatched on form with his best, and he might be able to work out a decent trip while stretching around two turns again.
Race Summary	Larry the Poet only went evenly in the debut run, but that might translate better in this second start while getting some added ground. Expecting better today.

Hawthorne - Race #4

#3 Sailing Solo	He has obviously had his stops and starts, but his better stuff has been solid, and he has run into some tough customers over the last couple years. Think he can control the tempo today.
#4 Temper Tantrum	He didn't fire in New Orleans late last year, but the winner that day was back to land the meet's turf feature on closing weekend, and it was an odd season of turf racing in New Orleans anyway. Forgive him that one and his form fits.
#5 Captivating Moon	His turf form outside of tougher stakes company stacks up well here, but I do worry a bit about the race shape today. Better chance if the lack of pace allows them all to bunch up.
Race Summary	Sailing Solo is fast enough to be right up top early in a short field, and I don't think he's meeting the kind of field he has typically faced over the last few years.

Hawthorne - Race #7

#5 Faithful Ruler	He might be a bit better on the main, but he has some pace in a race without a ton of committed speed, so I wouldn't be shocked to see him win this by capitalizing on a solid race flow. Perfect prompting trip awaits.
#1 Peruvian Lucky	Guessing he's got something better to offer than he showed last month at Pimlico, and he might have just enough tactical pace to stay in touch with this group.
#7 On K P	He wasn't pushed along much late when fading in the last one behind the top choice in Kentucky, but there are some back turf sprints on his page from last fall that would keep him in the frame here. Surface switch wakes him up?
Race Summary	Faithful Ruler should get a perfect run of things right up top early with form that suggests he's as good as any right now. #2 Hurts So Bad is the wildcard on the rise after drilling $12,500 company last out.

Race Summary	ROCKINGHAM JOE saved ground behind a trio of rivals, shot the rail into the stretch but was squeezed and steadied twice to the wire, proving costly. The race winner came back to finish fourth in a stakes race. Bet to win and place and play a 2-6-7 exacta box.

Delaware Park - Race #5

#8 HECKLED (4-1)	Better than last pair appear, trainer-jockey connections are 9-for-22 the last 30 days.
#2 GOMOMISCHIEF (8-1)	Ran well enough to win in lone turf test going a route of ground.
#10 CREOLE (5-1)	Crowded break, responded on lead when challenged, missed in blanket finish.
Race Summary	HECKLED lost momentum while the deep closers swept the top three spots at 1-1/8 miles two starts ago at Keeneland, then pressed the winning favorite before tiring at this distance at Churchill Downs. She earned solid speed figures in both and gets the nod for a win and place bet in here.

Delaware Park - Race #6

#7 LITIGANT (6-1)	Florida shipper is in good form, ideally spotted and runs well fresh.
#3 CALL ME MAESTRO (3-1)	Plagued by bad starts, stands 5/2-2-1 at this distance.
#5 SUTTON VALLEY (8-1)	Often in the hunt but hasn’t won in the last 10 months.
Race Summary	LITIGANT lands in a dream spot upon arrival from Tampa Bay Downs. He is a four-race winner against mostly nw/3 types and finished second from on and off the pace in his last three starts. He’s too good to pass up at 6-1 on the morning line, so bet to win and place.

This daughter of Palace Malice is out of a stakes winning mare that produced 4 winners from 4 to start including current stakes winner Amundson that has earned $554,000. (9) Astonesthrowaway will make her first start and is out of a mare that produced 2 winners from 3 runners including one that is placed in a graded stakes. (6) Run for Your Money is another first-time starter with a very good dam and she is 3 for 3 with runners that have a victory.

Thursday’s Den: Happy Armadillo Day!!!!

— 22 years ago today, we started this blog, had no idea what it would become, if anything. Lot of stuff has happened since then, mostly good, but some bad— that’s what life is, some good, some bad— if we’re lucky the good outweighs the bad.

We’re still here, which is a good thing; hopefully you enjoy the site and learn something once in a while. I’ve learned a lot just doing this every day.

Happy Armadillo Day!!!!

— Rough week for the TV networks, with NBA Finals and Stanley Cup finals both ending in five games. TV networks want these series to go 6 or 7 games; that’s where the big ratings are, in the 6th/7th games, which translate to more $$$$. TV networks love more $$$.

NHL Finals’ TV ratings were the worst since 2007. No bueno.

— On Sunday, Stanford pitcher Quinn Mathews threw 156 pitches in a Super Regional win against Texas. Complete game, 156 pitches; he saved the Cardinal’s season and now they’re in the College World Series.

College baseball coaches don’t practice load management; if a minor league manager let one of his pitchers throw 156 pitches in a game these days, he’d probably get fired. 119 pitches is the most anyone has thrown in the major leagues this season.

There was a time a while back where the Texas Longhorns had lot of pitches drafted, but before they got to the majors, most all of them had their arm operated on.

Not sure if Quinn Mathews will ever pitch in pro ball, but I’m sure that this week, his teammates and coaches freakin’ love him.

— Pat Sajak is retiring after the upcoming season of Wheel of Fortune; the 76-year old Sajak has been hosting the show for 40 years— this will be his 41st and last season.

Sajak was a weatherman at KNBC in Los Angeles when he was offered the job at Wheel of Fortune— he replaced Chick Woolery as host.

I felt kind of old typing all of that, but Pat Sajak seems like a good-natured guy who definitely doesn’t look like he is 76. Hope he enjoys his retirement; he’s provided us with an awful lot of entertainment over the years.

— Good news for Buffalo Bills’ fans: WR Stefon Diggs practiced at mini-camp Wednesday, so that brush fire appears to have been put out.

— Baseball injuries:
Astros’ 1B Yordan Alvarez (oblique) is out at least four weeks
Brewers signed free agent OF Raimel Tapia
Giants put OF Mitch Haniger (broken arm) on the IL

Mike Yastrzemski hit a 2-out, 2-run homer to tie the game in the 9th inning.

— Mets 4, Bronx 3 (10)— Brandon Nimmo’s walk-off double ended the game; Mets win for only the second time in 11 games.

— Marlins 4, Mariners 1— Eury Perez threw six shutout IP for Miami; Mariners hit three balls of him that were caught at the fence, two by Eugenio Suarez. Seattle has a lousy hitter’s ballpark.

— Movie of the Day— Little Big League (1994)— The owner of the Minnesota Twins dies, and leaves the team to his 12-year old grandson, who names himself manager of the team. Not the most realistic movie, but it is a good movie.

Jason Robards plays the owner of the Twins, Kevin Dunn is the team’s GM, Timothy Busfield is the Twins’ 1B, Ashley Crow is the kid’s mom. John Ashton is the Twins’ pitching coach; lot of former major leaguers appear in this movie.

29 years later, in real life, Ashley Crow’s son is in the minor leagues with the Cubs, one of their top prospects (Pete Crow-Armstrong).

— One of the most important things I’ve learned in the last 22 years is that anyone can write; believe me, if I can do this, so can you.
