Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Eliminations Analysis

    June 23, 2023 | By Al Cimaglia
Yonkers Raceway has a 12-race card featuring elimination races for the Park MGM Filly Pace and the MGM Yonkers Trot. Comments and selections below are on the four eliminations. The weather forecast calls for a rainy night and my handicapping is based on an off-track.

Race 1-Park MGM Filly Pace Elimination (7:00 EST PM)

1-Earthwindfire (3/2)-This is a top filly trained by Brett Pelling and thrives on half-mile ovals. Tetrick takes the lines and looks the part of 3/2 favorite leaving from the rail.
5-Alexa's Fantasy (4-1)-May not be able to leave fast enough to land in the pocket. But Bartlett should work a good trip from here and could cash a 2nd place check if the journey is smooth.
2-Silky Stride (5-1)-This gal is in good form and now tackles some tougher foes. Stratton can hit the board with a well-timed move at a big price. Willing to use underneath in gimmicks.

Race 2-Park MGM Filly Pace Elimination (7:20 EST PM)

2-Turn On The Charm (3-1)-Short track specialist shouldn't have an issues with the turns. Raced here on 8-2-22, left quickly and tired late in the mile which had very quick fractions. Might be overlooked tonight and could be on top or in the 2-hole by the first turn.
3-Vivians Dream (9/5)-Morning line chalk raced with Fan Hanover fillies at Mohawk without much success but should be a main player here. Raced once at YR, finished second, and should get good early position once the wings fold.
1-Ucandoit Blue Chip (2-1)-Toscano pupil is no slouch banking over $330K in 12 starts but doesn't have the smaller oval experience of the 2 above. Probably will be bet hard anyway and can be there at the wire if the turns aren't an issue.

Race 6-MGM Yonkers Trot Elimination (8:40 PM EST)

6-Chapercraze (5-1)-Will look for a price as this Burke trainee should be leaving hard off the gate and has shown improvement since changing barns 2 races back. Could win if Gingras lands on the point without trouble and isn't challenged early on. That might be the case in this Elimination.
3-Crown (2-1)-Melander trainee is the program chalk as it should be and is a perfect 1 for 1 on this oval. This is the 3rd start off the bench and not sure if we see big gate speed early on. Should have no issues qualifying, and it wouldn't be a surprise if it was picture time.
4-Up Your Deo (5/2)-Is only 1-10 lifetime but has performed well in both starts this year at M1. This will be the 1st try on a half-mile track. Team Svanstedt deserves respect but will use underneath and could raise my opinion for next week after a start on this oval.

Race 7-MGM Yonkers Trot Elimination (9:00 PM EST)

4-Kenobi (9/2)-Should be a solid price and doesn't have the bankroll of others but does have the gate speed to land in a close-up seat. Not sure if it can out leave the one below but should be in striking range turning for the wire either way.
1-Kierkegaard K (2-1)-The Svanstedt barn is batting 38% over the last 30 days and this very nice colt has easily won his first two starts off the bench. But this isn't Vernon Downs, has limited small oval experience, and shows only 1 start from the rail. Still could win but would rather use underneath in its Yonkers debut.
7-Ari Ferrari J (5/2)-This is another nice colt and from a an inside post my opinion would be different. My guess Dunn doesn't abuse this sophomore by blasting out. He could look to provide a smooth trip, qualify, and hit the ticket by rallying off cover.

Gulfstream Park Pick 4 Ticket | Friday, June 23

      June 23, 2023 | By Frank Carulli
      GULFSTREAM PARK PICK 4
      Friday, June 23

You could be alive in the Jackpot Pick 6 by the time Gulfstream Park’s sixth race rolls around this Friday. But either way, the 50-cent Late Pick 4 wager looms challenging and worth playing. Here’s a closer look:

GP 6th race (3:24 EST) -- The track veterinarian voided a $20,000 claim on GOOCH GO BRAGH after he rallied 7-wide to finish second to favored Catatumbo (14/3-3-4, $81k), a proven $20k router. He hasn’t raced in two months since that race, but if he duplicates that effort, he should win on the class drop as today’s Pick 4 solo play.

GP 7th race (3:54 EST) -- PACIFIC PRINCESS, the light weight in the field, ran second to synthetic track lover Vandalia (6-19, $102k) in her first try on the surface last November, then sustained a 4-wide rally to win going away at this distance last out. KHOSEA loomed boldly on the final turn en route to a repeat victory, but the runner-up in both races, La Rusia, was in poor form coming in and 3-37 at Gulfstream. FLYING BLACK, first or second in 8 of 12 starts on the synthetic track, should lead for as far as she goes at a proven distance after a useful comeback sprint.

GP 8th race (4:26 EST) -- ZARAK’S debut in the U.S. off a 1-1/2-year layoff was impressive. He bid 3-wide to a stretch lead and got caught late by Big And Classy, who won his sixth consecutive race to top $200k in earnings. AVANT GLORY drew clear despite drifting to the 5-path two starts back, then held third after a hard duel in a 7F stakes race. POSITIVE REVIEW bid 4-wide to a brief lead on the turn, finished second off an 11-month layoff, breezed 4F in :47.2 last Saturday at Gulfstream and gets Zayas to ride.

GP 9th race (4:59 EST) – UNCAPTURED TIGER worked a couple of bullets recently and his dam, Tillie The Tigress (30/6-7-5, $139k) was a first-out MSW winner at Calder. EIGHTNINEGO sped off to stretch leads in both starts at this level but settled for minor awards. MR. RHODIUM handled the Tapeta surface well, rallying past EIGHTNINEGO for his third in-the-money finish in a row. MR. AMERICAN tracked the winning favorite and tired in his last race on Tapeta that produced three next-out winners.

      Suggested 50-cent Ticket
      GP 6th Race: 5
      GP 7th Race: 2, 4, 7
      GP 8th Race: 1, 3, 5
      GP 9th Race: 3, 4, 5, 6
      Cost for 50-Cent Ticket: $18

If you don’t have an Xpressbet account, sign up with promo code FAST100 to get a $100 bonus when you bet $500 within 30 days of sign up.
        The Americans

The US delegation will be dormant on Friday. Note that the Irish-based Meditate is well known stateside as last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf winner. She’ll compete in Friday’s Group 1 Coronation Stakes as the expected second betting choice for Coolmore.

        The Main Event

The Race 4 Coronation Stakes is Group 1 mile event for 3-year-old fillies. Dermot Weld won this race some 45 years ago in 1978 and lands the heavy favorite in Tahiyra. She is trading almost universally at 4-7 odds in the UK books. She’s a half-length away from perfection in her 4-start career, winning the Group 1 Irish 1000 Guineas on May 28. Her 6 challengers in the Coronation Stakes include Meditate, beaten 1-1/2 lengths in the aforementioned Irish 1000 Guineas and a widening 10 lengths to Tahiyra in the English 1000 Guineas. She’ll look to turn the tables for Aidan O’Brien. There are the only two runners being offered in single-digit odds in the major UK books.

        The Tips

Here are the top picks in each race, courtesy of the UK’s At The Races Preview & Betting Guide handicappers.

        Race 1 | #1 Carla’s Way
        Race 2 | #2 Little Big Bear
        Race 3 | #3 Teumessias Fox
        Race 4 | #7 Tahiyra
        Race 5 | #26 Marksman Queen
        Race 6 | #5 King of Steel

          Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

          Emerald Downs - Race #5
#3 Cody's Choice He's a good fit at this level and should find himself in another good spot tracking the early splits here. He hit the top last out before just struggling to find the line, and maybe he has something just a touch better to offer here in the third run off the break.
#5 Dirt Road Red He looks like the one to beat with pretty honest overall form on the page, and something like his two-back sprint run with a bit cheaper probably stacks up pretty nicely here.
#6 Provost Riser has reliable form and looks likely to find a decent spot from this outside draw, but I do have just a small worry about him on class as a lot of his better recent efforts have come against softer. Obviously capable.
Race Summary Cody's Choice might get just a touch overlooked with the other listed pair having some appeal, too, and he's as good as any in here if he's got another step forward in him tonight.
          Emerald Downs - Race #6
#1 Fire Escape I am a little concerned about her taking some heat from the inside, but I'm not sure she's meeting an unreasonable number of other forward players, and she has a little appeal second off the bench while trying to take these the whole way.
#2 Blowing Bayou She might do her best work against slightly softer, but she ran some races here last year that would keep her in the frame today at what might be a decent enough price.
#6 Miracle of Hope Would want her on the tickets with a potentially decent pace-pressing trip looming, and the drop isn't worrying as she was a $3,500 graduate last year. She won't knock me out of anything.
Race Summary Think you can make a case for several of these including #8 Queen Breezy and #4 Smiling Thunder, but the listed trio might all have a little claim on this at decent prices.
          Emerald Downs - Race #7
#2 Howdoyalikemenow Pace player gets some class relief in the first try against the locals, and he has shown some sprint pace in the past that suggests he might try to control this the whole way. Honestly wouldn't be against him trying to tuck in the pocket if a couple others want to go.
#6 Amara Mike He's dropping for this one off a couple pretty decent races with special weight groups, and he may end up a thorn in the side of the top choice. Dangerous here.
#5 Uncle Pete The only two dull tries on his page came with much better, and he should benefit from getting back into a claiming spot today. Not impossible from off the pace.
Race Summary Howdoyalikemenow has some committed pace and has run a couple good ones going short in his career, and I think the price might be right despite there being a couple tries here already that could get the job done.

            Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

            Laurel Park - Race #1
#6 SUCCEED (5-1) Gets second chance to carry over good dirt route form to the grass.
#3 SIGMUND (12-1) Six-wide on first turn, stalked 3-way duel, raced evenly in stretch.
#8 SAGE RUNNER (9-2) Broke outward with blinkers, followed move of even-money fave, ran second.
Race Summary SUCCEED is 0-for-17 the last two years and flopped in his only turf test, but in his last five main-track route races, he rallied for three seconds and a third. Give him one more chance with a win and place bet and a 3-6-8 exacta box.
            Laurel Park - Race #2
#7 DOWN COLD (8-5) Good fit on drop, good race shape, but will be underlay with 1-14 mark since ’22.
#8 DAREDAVITE (15-1) Sprung 26-1 upset on stretch out; dam earned $105k and got better with age.
#3 MAILMAN’S A FLYER (5- Rallied for share in 14 of 27 starts, lack of pace a concern.
Race Summary With little quality speed in the field, DOWN COLD can sit close to the pace and use his class edge to win off the Farrior claim and a two-month freshening. He has only won once in the last two years but will have no excuse in this spot. Play a 7,8/3,7,8/ALL trifecta.
            Laurel Park - Race #6
#8 I’M GITTIN THERE (6-1 Consistent dirt sprint form, nearing $200k in Laurel Park earnings.
#10 GOLDEN EFFECT (5-1) Can use her speed well, won second time off similar freshening.
#9 IN MY OPINION (12-1) Can rally into exotic wagers, but lone win since ’22 was in 4-horse field.
Race Summary I’M GITTIN THERE won at three distances in her last eight starts on the main track, had a useful 6F sprint after two months away and appears well-suited to conquer the 7F distance today. She finished first or second in 8 of 16 starts at the track and offers good value for a win and place bet.

                  # 3 PUSHI PUENTE 3/1
                  # 6 EL GRAN MICKEY 5/2
                  # 5 FRANK LUCAS 2/1
I like PUSHI PUENTE here. Vaunts reliable speed figures on average overall when matched with the rest of this group. Investors should take a good look at this one as this horse has one of the best win percentages at this distance in this group of animals. Put up a very good speed rating last time out. EL GRAN MICKEY - Garnered a sound speed rating in the most recent race. Can run another good one in this affair. Has very good Equibase Class Figures relative to this group - worth a look. FRANK LUCAS - Has to be carefully examined against this field displaying very good figures lately and an average Equibase speed fig of 56 under similar conditions. Morales has one of the most competitive winning percentages in this group with entries running at this distance and surface.

                    Belmont Park - Race #3 - Post: 2:07pm - Maiden Special - 8.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $90,000 Class Rating: 81

                    Rating:

                    #1 RISK FREE (ML=8/1)
                    #6 PITCH CLOCK (ML=7/2)
                    #3 ST. BENEDICTS PREP (ML=4/1)

RISK FREE - Jockey jumped on this filly's back for the first try on May 28th. Should know the horse even better today. Another way to identify class is earnings per start. This mount has the top in the field. I think she'll be close at the end. I really like that latest contest on May 28th at Belmont Park where she finished second. PITCH CLOCK - This thoroughbred could be tough this time, especially since Prat rode last out and now should be plenty familiar with this one. This filly should improve after adding Lasix in the last race and getting it again today. This handler does a good job stretching out any horse. Horses going a route for the first time almost always show an improvement. ST. BENEDICTS PREP - Always beware of the longer priced animal when a trainer has an 'uncoupled' entry in a race. This horse is going to run 1 mile today for the very first time. A good thing since the trainer, Brown, has a great win percent stretching horses out. I look for a significant improvement right here with the addition of Lasix for the second time. Trying to break maiden moving from a race on the grass to the dirt. I think Brown will have her in good condition for today's race.

Vulnerable Contenders: #8 HOLLYWOODLAND (ML=4/1), #2 SPELL ON YOU (ML=5/1), #5 VITA DE VITO (ML=5/1),

HOLLYWOODLAND - Somewhat easily forgotten speed fig last out at Pimlico at 1 1/16 miles. Don't believe this racer will improve too much in today's race. SPELL ON YOU - I'm foretelling a lackluster go out of her today. VITA DE VITO - In the last race this less than sharp equine finished third. Doesn't bode well for her chances in today's event.

                      # 5 MIDTOWN ROSE 5/2
                      # 3 AWESOME VIEW 7/2
PINK SHOELACES looks to be a respectable contender. Overall the Equibase speed figs of this pony look respectable in this race. Very strong choice to take this race going in a dirt sprint. Has been running admirably lately and will probably be up on the front end early on. MIDTOWN ROSE - Will most likely come out strong - I have liked the way this mare has moved quickly to the front end recently. This mare ought to be given a shot just off the earnings per start in dirt sprint contests alone. AWESOME VIEW - Ran a strong last race. Is a very strong contender based on numbers earned recently under today's conditions.

                        Rating:

                        #5 JOHNNY'S MOMENT (ML=7/2)
                        #1 BENITO (ML=8/1)

JOHNNY'S MOMENT - This gelding is in nice form, having run a strong race on June 8th, finishing third. BENITO - I certainly see favorable signs for this magnificent animal right here.

                        Vulnerable Contenders: #6 GUS GUS (ML=9/5), #2 TROY BOY (ML=4/1), #3 RAMBLIN CHROME (ML=9/2),

GUS GUS - Difficult to keep stabbing at this kind of 'bridesmaid' horse. TROY BOY - Hard to play any thoroughbred to turn things around if there is no reward to taking the risk. Most unsatisfactory speed figure last time out at Horseshoe Indianapolis at 1 1/16 miles. Don't think this horse will improve too much today. RAMBLIN CHROME - Tough to like the downward flow (62/28/24) of Equibase speed figs.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: #5 JOHNNY'S MOMENT is going to be the play if we are getting 6/5 or better
