    Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

    Hawthorne - Race #4
#5 Froshado Think she's better than the dull run in a short field at Keeneland, and she might find herself in a pretty good spot spying the speed early on. Her better stuff might do.
#1 Wilma Mankiller Think this one is pretty top heavy and likely to be decided between these two, and she has a tactical advantage on the top choice here with dangerous gate pace from the fence. The one to beat.
#3 Sweet Nellie She might be quick enough to keep the rail runner in her sights early on, and I think she might be a decent enough fit at the local level. Probably finds one of the two a bit too tough.
Race Summary Froshado and Wilma Mankiller look tough to get past in this short field, but the former might offer a slightly better price off the modest try in Lexington, and she should be in a decent spot to spy the pace throughout.
    Hawthorne - Race #5
#1 Prancipants She steps up in some of her better form, and I wonder if her route speed might serve her well while cutting back to this sharper turf trip. Stepping up at the right time?
#7 Rare Action Attack She has done some of her better work going short on the turf, and she still tends to offer pretty appealing prices on the board. Wouldn't be surprised to see her add some spice to the exotics.
#11 Style She caught a tough winner last time out and makes a lot of sense with these if this one comes over to the main track.
Race Summary Prancipants has put together a nice season so far, and she earned this rise with another honest effort last time out. Think she might like the flow today.
    Hawthorne - Race #7
#2 Ten Count He showed some pace and stuck around well enough in the career debut last fall, and he might get the right kind of race shape to take advantage of that speed again here. Dangerous if he's ready to roll.
#1 J J's Solution Think he has a little price appeal from a midpack spot today while getting back on the turf, and he ran well going short here on the grass last year. Think he's in with a sneaky chance.
#5 Cool and Collected He was a total no show in the career debut when taking a mid-range bit of cash, and he almost has to be better this time around. Encouraging that he's still at this level after such a dreadful debut, I suppose.
Race Summary Ten Count has some pace in a spot where that might give him an edge, as there are a lot of question marks throughout the rest of this race and at least his ability to get in the game early is not one of them.

      Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

      Woodbine - Race #3
#2 SIXTOFIVE (8-1) Useful comeback on lawn, lone long sprint on main track was solid.
#1 SOCIAL DRINKER (3-1) Got good view of outer rail in both starts, adds blinkers from the rail today.
#6 FEDALINE (6-1) Beaten fave on the class drop, steps up for new connections.
Race Summary SIXTOFIVE ‘gained strongly’ to finish second after she swung 7-wide for the stretch drive in a long sprint on the all-weather track two back. She lacked stretch kick on the turf last out but should benefit from her first race this year. Bet to win and place.
      Woodbine - Race #5
#4 BOSTON BAY (10-1) Price stab in wide-open long sprint in third start of cycle.
#8 JACK (5-2) Solid numbers in MSW ranks, beaten fave in seasonal debut, class drops again.
#1 UPTOWN LIGHTS (2-1) Rallied for second behind MSW class dropper, gets in light from the rail.
Race Summary BOSTON BAY, much improved with Lasix, tracked the dueling favorites two starts back but couldn’t get by at 6F on the all-weather track. He’s worth a win and place bet at 10-1 on the morning line, or at least a use in a 1-4-8 exacta box.
      Woodbine - Race #6
#5 COLEYVILLE (4-1) Tries to carry-over good main-track form to the lawn.
#7 SEQUIMI (6-1) Tired chasing the fave through solid splits off six-month layoff.
#3 JACK THE CAT (5-2) $200K grass earner rode rail, gained some, raced evenly in stretch.
Race Summary COLEYVILLE advanced inside on the turn, angled 4-wide in the stretch and finished a clear second while no match for the winning favorite at this distance. The 9-year-old won his seasonal debut two starts back and should go better on the surface switch than his 2-for-20 turf record indicates. Bet to win and place and play a 3-5-7 exacta box.

            PURCHASE

            Charles Town - Race #2 - Post: 7:30pm - Claiming - 4.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $14,100 Class Rating: 68

            Rating:

            #4 NO FOOLING DUDE (ML=3/1)
            #8 IMPETUOUS (ML=15/1)
            #5 WIDGET FACTORY (ML=5/1)

NO FOOLING DUDE - The rider/handler tandem of Concepcion and Brown has a strong return on investment together. This gelding is in fine condition, having run a strong race on June 9th, finishing third. This horse's last race was at Charles Town in a race with a class rating of 76. Dropping considerably in class rating this time out puts him in a solid position today. Should do well in this event. Weight shift of -5 from Jun 9th race at Charles Town. IMPETUOUS - This horse's last race was at Charles Town in a race with a class number of 76. Dropping significantly in Equibase class figure today puts him in a solid position in today's race. WIDGET FACTORY - That last morning drill tells me this gelding is set for a top race. Trainer Joy moves this thoroughbred down the class scale to face much lower class horses. Look for a good race this time out.

            Vulnerable Contenders: #3 BE BE BOP (ML=5/2), #2 EQUAL JUSTICE (ML=7/2), #1 AWESUMMER (ML=9/2),

BE BE BOP - In the last race this pony finished eighth. Doesn't bode well for his chances in today's event. EQUAL JUSTICE - This gelding hasn't had any recent good results in short distance affairs. I find it hard to play him in this race. This gelding finished out of the money on May 6th and wasn't even close in the last race either. AWESUMMER - No accomplishments for this pony in a short distance contest over the last sixty days tells me that this gelding is in a tough spot Just cannot wager on this steed. Didn't show me anything positive last out or on Apr 12th.

GUEST COMMENTARY: The Brain - NO FOOLING DUDE - The data here is quite simple. This entrant has a lot of early speed, so I'd calculate that he sets the early fractions, with a chance to be in the lead the entire race.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: #4 NO FOOLING DUDE is the play if we get odds of 3/1 or better
            EXACTA WAGERS: Box [4,5,8]

Race 9 - Maiden Special Weight - 5.5f on the Turf. Purse: $120000 Class Rating: 83

FOR MAIDENS, FILLIES AND MARES THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD. THREE YEAR OLDS, 118 LBS.; OLDER, 124 LBS.

              RECOMMENDED CHOICES

              # 11 SCATLIE 2/1
              # 12 ANNA'S ARABESQUE 7/5
My pick in this contest is ALL I WANT IS YOU. SCATLIE - Could provide positive profits based on quite good recent speed figures with an average of 78. Always good to invest in a trainer with this kind of solid win percentage - 18 percent - at this distance & surface. ANNA'S ARABESQUE - Competitive gamble today with second time Lasix. Looks to have a solid class edge based on the most recent company kept.

                # 8 LETHAL WAGON 5/2
                # 4 HH EXPRESS 19 3/1
                # 7 DUPONT BEACH 7/2
LETHAL WAGON seems to be the bet in here. Is tough not to look at based on speed figures which have been competitive - 58 avg - of late. Should be considered - I like the figs from the last contest. Trainer boasts solid win figs at this distance and surface. HH EXPRESS 19 - Has a strong record at the distance and surface, which makes me have to support this gelding. Is a contender - given the 67 speed figure from his most recent race. DUPONT BEACH - Could wake up with Lasix change (with second time Lasix) today. He must be given consideration given the decent speed figs.

                  Hawthorne - Race #6 - Post: 4:45pm - Claiming - 5.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $12,000 Class Rating: 75

                  Rating:

                  #1 LITTLE BELLA (ML=9/2)
                  #5 RANK AND FILE (ML=8/1)

LITTLE BELLA - This front running sort is running a shorter distance today. Should aid her chances to win. When this jockey and trainer join forces you have to take a look. Blanche and Witthauer have been wonderful together. When a thoroughbred drops at least 5 pounds (like this one is), you must take notice. It may not seem like much, but this certainly could make the difference. RANK AND FILE - I think this mare is very sharp right now. I like the fact that Hughes brings her back to a race so quickly.

                  Vulnerable Contenders: #4 FOGGY KITTEN (ML=9/5), #3 GHAALEB'S APPEAL (ML=3/1), #2 KITTEN ROCKS (ML=7/2),

FOGGY KITTEN - A bit of a less than stellar effort when this mare finished fifth. Not likely that the speed figure she recorded on May 28th will be enough in this event. GHAALEB'S APPEAL - The rating last time around the track doesn't fit very well in this clash when I look at the class rating of today's race. Mark this mount as a likely underpriced equine. KITTEN ROCKS - I find it hard to play this questionable contender this time. Make her show you something in a sprint contest before you play her in a race of 5 1/2 furlongs.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: #1 LITTLE BELLA is going to be the play if we are getting 3/2 or better
                  EXACTA WAGERS: Box [1,5]
