Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

Yonkers Raceway has a 12-race card scheduled and the 0.50 Pick 5 with a $10,000 guaranteed pool starts in Race 5. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 rolls in Race 9, and the sequence will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 9

3-Division Bell (5/2)-Drops after facing $50K claimers and raced from the back. Now gets post relief after having the 7-hole in the last 2 starts and faces easier. Kakaley should have in striking range and could land in a close-up seat off the gate.
4-Islandspecialmajor (7/2)-Comes off improved efforts in the last 2 races and showed good gate speed both times. Drops in for a tag and it could be wake-up time. Gingras should have in play when the wings fold and will look for an aggressive steer.

Race 10

1-Deep Infatuation N (5/2)-Had a winning Yonkers debut on 6-24, wired the field in the 1st start on Lasix. Faces similar and looks like a major player.
4-C-Bet Hanover (7/2)-Doesn't offer any value if bet down but willing to take a swing as Gingras could leave and land in the pocket. This is a possible trip out candidate and hopefully won't be over bet.
6-Family Recipe (5-1)-Recent form has been dull but now drops to a level of past success. This was Holland's pick over #5 who is 7/2 in the morning line. Needs the right set-up but should be a square price if connects.

Race 11

2-Jay Bracken A (4-1)-Ships in from Philly, lands in a spot to compete and Bartlett grabs the lines. Has good gate speed and can take control early on and look to make every call a winning one.
6-Odds On Capitalism (7/2)-There isn't much form to chew on in this race. The 4-year-old has hit the board in 3 straight and had some excuses. Left from the 8-hole and then was 2nd to a winner who went in 152.2. Bumps up but there isn't much depth in this field and at least this Morgan trainee competes. Still looking for the 1st win this year (0-7) but did take 10 pictures in 24 starts in 2022.

Race 12

3-Bluebird Recon (6-1)-Almost came to a stop on 6-16 and then looked okay finishing 2nd in 153.3 on 6-23 in a qualifier. The Laterza barn has been cold and there are question marks but could top this crew with an efficient trip if dialed on high.
5-Vernier Hanover (4-1)-This is another who has struggled this year (0-6). It was a different story in 2022, beating the $75k claimers back in November. Shouldn't blush at the company and Stratton between the pipes won't hurt chances.

Presque Isle Downs - Race #1

#5 Nature Trail	The price will get quite a bit shorter today after the good run last out in which she bothered the 7/5 chalk late and got DQ'ed at 38/1, but that was a solid local debut and she figures to hustle herself into good position early again today.
#1 Calvary Kat	Debuter has a decent enough string of works to her credit ahead of the unveiling, and I'm not sure this is the deepest special weight spot you're going to find here.
#2 Kotylos	He has a claim on this one as well in a spot where the top two choices are fillies in with the boys, and he has pretty honest finishing form that figures to have him in the frame for a piece again.
Race Summary	Nature Trail has some appeal right back in this second start off the layoff, and maybe she can repeat that good try last out while showing some pace again. Think she can do this.

Presque Isle Downs - Race #6

#5 Diamond Dust	He's dangerous when he's able to find the front, and he's at least quick enough to hassle the guy drawn to his inside in the early stages. Think he can prompt early and land this.
#3 Court and Spark	He's making his third start off the break while bringing some pretty honest finishing form, and I wouldn't argue too much with anyone landing here if the price stayed at something appealing and midrange.
#4 Nice Ace	Nothing wrong with the overall form here, but he's likely to get bet again with what feels like another perfect trip waiting for him on paper. Wouldn't be a surprise, but I wouldn't be thrilled to sign on at anything like the 7/5 ML offering if he goes here instead of the stakes spot later.
Race Summary	Diamond Dust might be quickest of these, but he can also press Nice Ace early on if that guy breaks quickly and wants to make a race of it. Hoping he stays a bit playable with 'Ace taking cash?

Presque Isle Downs - Race #7

#7 Closethegame Sugar	He was a good second to a class-dropping winner from the Triple Crown Trail, and I bet he has something better to show today in this second run off the layoff. Tactical type might get a perfect trip behind a few sharper pace players.
#5 Nobals	He goes from a 38/1 outsider pulling the Grade II upset on Derby Day to the one to beat while dropping hard for this, but his form isn't always super reliable. and he's meeting some other speed -- including a serious player from his own barn with an ace gate rider named.
#8 Spirited Sol	I was pretty disappointed in his flat route try last time out, but the previous sprint form was pretty solid, and it feels like at least a tiny bit of good news that they're willing to give him a try in stakes company while cutting back off the dull run. Could see it if the pace gets wild.
Race Summary	Closethegame Sugar should be able to settle and watch the race unfold in a spot with a couple potential sharp pace players. Be sure to reconsider this race after scratches -- Rivelli holds the two quickest pace horses and softens the tempo by a bit if he doesn't run them both.

#4 PAPAWASAROLLNSTONE (6-1)	Raced wide and trailed in $5k return off year layoff.
Race Summary	SILENT DECLARATION takes a magnified class drop in a dreadful field and will have every chance to enhance his 7/2-1-2 record at Emerald Downs. He chased fractions that rivaled a same-day, $15k/nw3 claiming race last out and ‘finished well’ for third. Make him today’s Best Bet.

Emerald Downs - Race #5

#2 DRAGON WORKS (6-1)	Well-prepped from the gate for debut, gap in training the concern.
#1 PLATINUM PHANTOM (10-1)	Late interest in both starts, price attached, use in gimmicks.
7 AVANTI LEAH (6-1)	Stablemate of ‘Dragon’ rallied 5-wide to finish third behind the favorites.
Race Summary	DRAGON WORKS shows a steady series of works over the track after showing none during a nine-month stretch heading into this year. Her dam was a MSW winner at Keeneland and stakes-placed in her first year of racing. Bet to win and place.

Emerald Downs - Race #7

#2 SARGENT KLINE (6-1)	Second to 9-5 pace controller in latest, steps up, good value play.
#8 PESO (2-1)	Worked bullets before two allowance tests, tries long sprint for the first time.
#1 NAPOLEONIC CODE (5-2)	Chased fast middle fractions in one-mile allowance in first start as gelding.
Race Summary	SARGENT KLINE is in good form, the lone entrant to win at this distance and worth a win and place bet on the class rise. He gets ample pace to rally into and upgrade his five in-the-money finishes at Emerald Downs to a victory.

2^nd race [Md 40000, 7F TURF] – (2) Wonder Girl (B) lost her two rear shoes in the paddock before the race and ran for purse money only. She pressed the pace going a mile and then faded a bit in the stretch. (8) Keep It Sexy will drop into the claiming ranks for the first time with speed figures that make her a contender in this field. (3) Just a Splash will also drop into a maiden claimer for the first time and cuts back in distance. (5) Belleshazza pressed the pace in her first start of the year and finished fourth behind a horse that came back to win her next start.
3^rdrace [NY, Alw 80000, 1 mi] – (3) Harlan’s Bond returns to the dirt and NY-bred company where he broke his maiden in February at Aqueduct and gets Irad Ortiz on board. (5) Duckphat could get a very similar comment to the top choice, but he goes for much lower profile connections and will be much better odds. (4) April Antics shows no recent races against state-breds but does have four top three finishes in a row including a win at the Big A in April. (6) Sweetie was a debut maiden special weight winner and came right back to run third in an allowance at Aqueduct. She is a 5-year-old that has only three career starts.
4^th race [Clm 25000B, 1 mi] – (1) Valenzan Day was claimed from his last two starts including most recently by Linda Rice for $32,000. Rice has used this pattern before with lots of success – drop down after a short layoff in the first start for her barn and get a quick profit with a win and Jose Ortiz riding. (6) Super Quality was claimed for $14,000 from his last two races, two weeks ago he set the pace and finished second going a mile for Rice. (4) Bert Bert Bert got an impressive win last time for a $25,000 tag with a surge in speed figures. (7) Cumberland Blues tried the turf last time with poor results and moves back to the dirt where he was second in the prior race.
9^th race [NY, Md 40000, 1 1/16 mi TURF] – (9) Barry the Builder (A) got shut off while stuck on the rail without racing room and probably should have finished second in a similar spot in his second start of the year. (7) Maythisbetheone has a pair of thirds in his two starts this year while moving back onto the grass. (1) Zapruder moves to the barn of Linda Rice, gets first-time Lasix, and drops in for a tag for the first time. (5) Conquist drops in for the $40,000 price in his second start of the year with several starts last year that make him a contender in here.
Best bets: Harlan’s Bond (3^rd); Valenzan Day (4^th). Best value: Wonder Girl (2^nd); Barry the Builder (9^th).
