Al Cimaglia: Hoosier Park Late Pick 4 Analysis

Hoosier Park begins the weekend with a 14-race card. The 0.50 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 11, and the sequence will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 11 (9:45 PM EST)

3-Topville Alexander (9/2)-Not feeling much love for the 2 program chalks #2 & #6, so will swing for a square price. The race might set up nicely for this 4-year-old as there isn't much gate speed. Macomber could land on the point or get a pocket ride.
4-Shady Lane Luck (5-1)-Was handled conservatively as a chalk in the 1st start for the new connections. Stayed inside and finally shook free coming up the rail in the late going. Looked like a winner but was passed by 2 others at the wire. Thinking there is a more aggressive steer coming.

Race 12 (10:06 PM EST)

3-It's Corona Time (4-1)-Came a good 2nd after taking the early lead off the gate. May have met a beatable field and the team Macomber entry should be racing near the stop of the stack.
7-Fortunada (5/2)-Similar profile to the one above and has the gate speed to land on the point or in the 2-hole. Either trip can work for a picture.

Race 13 (10:27 PM EST)

1-De Los Cielos Deo (4-1)-Was in tall cotton versus Open company in last and was not in the hunt at all. Tetrick sticks and should have no excuse for a better showing against this kind.
2-General Idea (5-1)-Oosting downed the $75k claimers on 6-2 and then Tyler George shipped the 6-year-old to ScD for a 5th place finish on 6-24. Gets Oosting back as Tetrick stays with the other George entry and this looks like a spot to cash the top check.
6-Sure Thing Herman (5/2)-Has performed well racing with Open company and should appreciate the class relief. Best to respect this 10-time winner in 30 HoP races.

Race 14 (10:48 PM EST)

2-Town Gossip (4-1)-The last 3 starts have been dull and hasn't raced since 6-9. Has been facing better since being claimed for $50k back in April. The Perry Smith barn has posted 28% winner over the last 30 days and Oosting, his top call driver gets the assignment.
6-ER Rocky (5/2)-Drops to a more competitive level and wasn't driven like a 27-1 shot last time. Wilfong pulled to come first over and got the lead from an even money chalk. But at the end of the day finished a length behind the favorite and was a beaten 3rd to a well-meant winner. This looks like a spot for a picture with a smooth trip.

Gulfstream Park, race 1

#1 HOLIDAY FANTASY (6-1) – Saved ground in mid-pack, lacked kick, returns as gelding.

#3 DONTONIO (2-1) – Has plenty of long-distance experience, gets needed class relief.

#4 NETWORKING (5-2) – Slowed by the pace in short field for $25k, three thirds prior.



HOLIDAY FANTASY ran evenly on the class drop to this level in his first start on the all-weather track. The race winner repeated in a $12,500/nw2 route as the favorite. He returns from a 10-week layoff in a new barn and as a first-time gelding. Bet to win and place.



Gulfstream Park, race 6

#3 MAJOR KING (3-1) – Ran 1-2 in four of five starts with Vasquez, lacked room in the slop last out.

#9 THE RED MAN (6-1) – Can use his speed well from the outside, question of readiness off layoff.

#1 SUPER CURIOSO (7-2) – Much improved in second start as gelding, takes class drop off claim.



MAJOR KING secured inside position while close to a moderate backstretch pace but was slowed by traffic on the turn. He regrouped to finish a willing second behind the rail-skimming 25-1 winner on a sloppy track. Bet to win and place.



Gulfstream Park, race 8

#1 SOLAIR (8-1) – Much the best when claimed in April, live longshot if she can duplicate it.

#6 LEXINATOR (6-1) – Circled the turn, drew off to easy win with second-time blinkers.

#4 DRINKS ON ME (5-2) – Won six of last 10 starts, seven as the favorite, enters new barn.



SOLAIR, idle three months since she was claimed out of a $12,500 victory, is too good to pass up at a tempting morning-line price. She bobbled at the break, lost momentum in traffic on the turn, ran down the pace-setting favorite and galloped out farther in front. Play a 1,6 with 1,4,6,8 with ALL trifecta.

Friday, July 7

Call it the Big House on the Prairie this Friday night. Prairie Meadows will host four $100,000 stakes -- including the Iowa Distaff and Iowa Sprint – as part of a 50-cent late Pick 4 wager. Here’s a closer look at the action:

PrM 6th race (9:11 EST) -- BUTTERBEAN follows a similar path into the Iowa Distaff as she did in winning the Grade III Iowa Oaks a year ago. She rallied from last-to-first in her prep race over the track and repeated the move in the Oaks with Glenn Corbett aboard. Roll the clock forward and she circled the field to win the $50,000 Jack Bishop to prep at tonight’s 1-1/16-mile distance. While she is the one to beat, her late-running style is compromised by a projected soft pace. That benefits COASTAL CHARM, who raced up-close and held clear stretch leads in 5 of 6 route races this year, winning three times to prove a blockbuster $30,000 claim. ICE ORCHID also looms a front-end threat from the rail. She was eased in the stretch when last seen in March, but the multiple Grade III-placed 4-year-old appears primed for her return off a series of bullet workouts.

PrM 7th race (9:40 EST) -- The seven entrants in the Iowa Sprint are a combined 28-79 at 6F with average earnings of $170,000 at the distance. STROBE won his first four 6F races by a total of 21-3/4 lengths before the streak was ended by SKELLY is the Grade III Count Fleet at Oaklawn Park. He was ‘slowly getting to the winner’ but settled for second best behind a rival who was winning for the fifth consecutive time with an average 100 Beyer speed figure. Also note that Cogburn, the seventh-place finisher in the Count Fleet, came back to win two turf sprint stakes and Candy Man Rocket, who finished last in the Count Fleet, won the Grade III Runhappy at Belmont next out. All said, STROBE is a solo play in the Pick 4 despite carrying 126 pounds for the first time.

PrM 8th race (10:09 EST) -- CROWN IMPERIAL accelerated quickly at the quarter pole, wandered slightly in early stretch, but straightened out to run past the even-money leader and gallop out farther in front in her debut. KISS awakened in her second start, setting the pace and repelling a bid from a favored first-time starter to prevail against Kentucky-breds at Ellis Park. TX WOMEN FOR ARTS disappointed in her debut off a pair of fast gate works, then beat a weak field from post 12 in a turf-to-dirt sprint. She is an obvious contender in the Prairie Gold Lassie but not worth a short price in the Pick 4 sequence.

PrM 9th race (10:38 EST) – Half of the 12 entrants in the Saylorville arrive from different tracks around the country, three come off stakes wins at the 6F distance and five earned the top speed figures of their career last out. FIRE ON TIME earned favoritism with a runner-up finish to champion Echo Zulu in the Grade III Winning Colors at Churchill Downs, but there’s so many live alternatives, hit the ‘ALL’ button in the Pick 4.

Emerald Downs - Race #5

#6 Cocoa Cents	She might be one of the quicker ones early in here, and she's got fairly reliable form that generally came with a bit better. She can be tough here.
#7 Heat Seeking Leta	She was really flat last out when failing to stay late, but she's capable of something better while getting down in class in a pretty serious way for this.
#8 Low Dose	She made some sense last time out when settling for second after showing the way, and she's drawn well to show the way or prompt the top choice if that one wants to roll a bit early.
Race Summary	Cocoa Cents has some appeal from up on the splits, and her mild pressing gear should serve her well in this spot.

Emerald Downs - Race #6

#2 Ted's Candy Girl	She took her time graduating, but she got over the top with a wide run last time out and should be just tactical enough to work out a trip without falling out the back early.
#3 La Popis	She's probably supposed to be right there with one of her baseline tries, and she goes third off the bench while maybe in line for a good spying trip.
#1 Camden High	She has super reliable form that has led to a string of underneath shares, and I could be drawn here if the price were just playable enough. Makes a lot of sense in the gimmicks.
Race Summary	Ted's Candy Girl has a little mid-range price appeal while stepping up for the new team, and she has occasional tactical pace in a race without a ton of early heat lined up.

Emerald Downs - Race #7

#4 Cash's Cat	I'd want a fair price to land here, but I think he has a little claim on this one while rising in claiming price for the new operation. Stretchout forward player might really like it if she can find the front.
#1 The Golden Egg	He has the kind of honest form with better that's supposed to make him pretty tough tonight, but I think the price is going to reflect that as he finds his easiest spot yet. Thinking he's right there throughout.
#5 Street Mogul	He was a bit flat at 4/5 in his local debut last out, but he's not meeting a particularly deep field here, and he might be able to turn a one-paced plugging trip into a piece of this.
Race Summary	Cash's Cat can make some noise from either on the engine or in a good pressing spot while stretching out, and I think she might enjoy the longer trip and more leisurely tempo today.

(2) Jimmythetooth puts blinkers on and gets Irad Ortiz to ride after running third behind the top choice in his debut. (8) Skyler’s Starship is out of a mare that earned $312,000 racing and was stakes placed as a 2-year-old. She has produced 1 winner from two that raced. (4) Perliano is from the first crop of the speedy Mitole.
4^th race [NY, OC 45k/N2X, 1 mi] – (1) Olympic Dreams was second by a head in a NY-bred stakes race earning the best speed figure of his career. MIDNITRAINTOGEORJA - Zenteno rode this horse for the initial time in the last race and comes right back today. Not much speed in this race other than this racer. This horse collects a lot of dough per race. Tops in this clash. Have to give this filly a shot. Ran a good effort last race out within the last month or so. This filly garnered a good speed fig of 64 in her last affair. That figure should be high enough to triumph this time around. HERMANITA ALEX - The jock/conditioner tandem of Rizo and Frey has a strong ROI together. It looks like Rizo had to 'know' this filly on May 26th when riding her for the initial time. Back on board again today. Taking a big class drop in class rating points from her May 26th race at Century Mile. Based on that data, I will give this horse the advantage.

BRYNN'S DREAM - The speed figure last time around the track doesn't fit very well in this clash when I look at the class rating of today's contest. Mark this thoroughbred as a questionable challenger. GOLDIE SOCKS - Should have at least finished in the money in the last couple of months in a short distance race to be worth it at minimal odds in a sprint. This filly finished outside the top 3 on May 26th and wasn't near the winner in the last race either. VIOLET CITY - Awfully hard to wager on this horse when she hasn't been showing any signs of life recently.

GUEST COMMENTARY: The Brain - MIDNITRAINTOGEORJA - Performance last out was strong, even though it was only good for a place effort. Was well clear of the show horse. My statistics say only a slight improvement is needed today to move up one and into the winner's circle.
