RACE 1: Post: 1:10 ET Grade: X
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 1-Pirate; 4-Special Element
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Pirate makes his debut for Todd Pletcher following a series of strong, healthy workouts and seems likely to get bet off the board after being listed as the 4/5 morning line favorite. From the first crop of Omaha Beach, he’s out of a long distance stakes winning turf mare, so he may not show his best stuff until somewhere down the road, but apparently he’s displayed enough in the morning to expect a debut victory. Special Element is the one to fear most. The son of the precocious stakes winning juvenile performer Copper Bullet breezed impressively in :10 flat at the OBS April sale and then brought $260,000 through the ring, so despite what appears to be a moderate local work tab we know the Bill Mott-trained colt absolutely can run.

RACE 2: Post: 1:42 ET Grade: C+
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 1-Win For Gold; 5-Talkin Pharoah
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Win for Gold appears well-spotted for a major effort in this starter allowance main track sprint, though having failed at odds of 3-1 or lower his last four starts (twice when favored) he may be a bit hard to trust. The Goldencents gelding has only one way to go - on the lead from gate to wire - so from the rail he’d be advised to leave with his field. Talkin Pharoah crushed maiden claimers with a career top speed figure last time out, and with another forward move today he could be quite competitive. He’s been protected today in what we view as a sign of confidence. Sugar Gray Leonard often produces a good late kick and if a pace meltdown materializes – quite possible considering the projected race flow – the Richard Dutrow-trained gelding should be heard from close home.

RACE 3: Post: 2:16 ET Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 1-Isola
Backups/savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Isola displayed winning form in her debut over the left-handed Fontainebleau layout on soft ground in April but struck the front too soon and was tagged late when finishing more than six lengths clear of the others in a promising performance. She makes her U.S. debut in this middle distance maiden affair for new connections and should be more than capable of handling the assignment. While we’d much prefer to see her draft in behind cover and produce a late kick, she actually has her share of early speed, so it wouldn’t be out of the question to see the Irish-bred filly close up throughout. Listed at 9/2 on the morning line, the Jack Sisterson-trained filly offers good wagering value in the win pool and in the various rolling exotics.

RACE 4: Post: 2:46 ET Grade: X
Main ticket (in order of preference): 2-In Italian
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Not that she needed the help, but In Italian will once again be gifted the lead in this year’s edition of the Diana S.-G1 and given the role as the controlling speed the English-bred mare looks impossible to beat. With five consecutive triple digit Beyer speed figures on her resume, the Chad Brown-trained mare simply outclasses her four rivals, three of which are her own stable mates. Obviously, she offers no wagering opportunity other than as a short-priced rolling exotic single.

RACE 5: Post: 3:18 ET Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 8-Mariachi; 2-Always Charming
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Always Charming and Mariachi finished two-three (with a nose separating the two) in a similar seven furlong sprint for New York-bred fillies and mares last month at Belmont Park and meet again, this time over three quarters at Saratoga. The latter has had just three outings while ‘Charming shows 10 previous starts, so perhaps Mariachi has more right to improve. We’ll put the daughter of Maclean’s Music on top but include both in rolling exotic play.

RACE 6: Post: 3:52 ET Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 10-Silver Skillet
Backups/Savers/Underneath: 6-Sals Dream Girl; 9-Snowy Evening.

Forecast: Silver Skillet has run a mile three times in her six race career, but this will be her first around two turns. The daughter of Liam’s Map projects as the controlling speed, and after missing by a neck in her first start on grass last time out (and earning a career top speed figure in doing so) the Christophe Clement-trained sophomore looks ready to step forward big time. At 7/2 on the morning line, she offers value in the win pool and in the various rolling exotics.

RACE 7: Post: 4:26 ET Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 1-Playlist; 4-Breeze Easy
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Playlist left her previous form far behind with a runaway first level allowance turf sprint win at Ellis Park last time out in a performance that earned a Beyer speed figure 17 points better than her previous career top. A similar effort today beats this field; let’s just hope that she’s not a one hit wonder. Breeze Easy can be a difficult ride – much of her troubled trips are of her own doing – but if she switches off and settles before taking hold in the lane the English-bred filly will have a legit chance to produce a winning late kick.

RACE 8: Post: 5:02 ET Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 9-Neigh Jude; 6-Island Rose
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Par for this New York-bred maiden special weight level is 74 (Beyer speed figure). Nothing among those that have raced have earned anything better than a 61 Beyer, and most are much slower than that. So let’s look at a couple of newcomers. The Monmouth Park-based Neigh Jude attracts Irad Ortiz, Jr. for a barn that hits at a reasonable 16% with debut runners and the daughter of Union Rags has put together a decent work tab that includes a bullet half mile breeze (:48 flat, fastest of 44) late last month. The Kelly Breen-trained filly looks very much like a live item in a race begging to be won by a fresh face. Island Rose, a daughter of Uncle Mo in the Charlton Baker stable, has a couple of bullet moves in her recent workout sequence that appear fairly decent. As a daughter of Gun Runner, she really has a right to be any kind but certainly won’t have to be a world beater to act with this group.

RACE 9: Post: 5:45 ET Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 2-Annapolis; 8-Casa Creed
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Annapolis has two wins and a second in three career starts on grass at Saratoga and arrives fresh from a solid win in the Opening Verse Stakes at Churchill Downs in early May. Effective as the controlling speed but just as comfortable in a second flight, stalking position, the son of War Front projects to enjoy a soft trip behind the committed speed types (Big Everest, Mid Day Image) and then have every chance when turned loose at the head of the lane. While there’s no great value at his morning line of 8/5, on paper he looks it. Casa Creed is a Grade-1 winner over this course and distance, so on his very best day he’s quite dangerous. The noted deep closer should have enough pace up front to compliment his style and have every chance to tag the leaders.

RACE 10: Post: 6:19 ET Grade: X
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 9-Gold Sweep
Backups/savers: none.

Forecast: Based on his runaway (nine length) win in the Tremont Stakes, Gold Sweep has a right to claim title as the best 2-year-old in North America right now, or at the very least, one of them. The son of Speightstown earned a 91 Beyer speed figure in victory, and that puts him in Breeders’ Cup Juvenile-G1 territory. How far he’ll run remains to be seen, but at this six furlong distance the Steve Asmussen-trained colt should be 10 lengths the best of this group and maybe even more if they allow him to be.

RACE 11: Post: 6:52 ET Grade: B+
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 1-Beer Run
Backups/savers: none.

Forecast: Beer Run is a colt of some promise. In the frame in his first two starts, most recently when runner-up in a quick turf sprint at Belmont Park that earned a strong speed figure, the Wesley Ward-trained son of City of Light should produce another forward move, and with a trouble free trip from the rail he looks quite capable of earning his diploma in this abbreviated dash. Johnny V. knows him well and stays aboard, so at 2-1 on the morning line (and likely to go lower) he’s a logical rolling exotic single.

Al Cimaglia: Meadowlands Pace Pick 4 Analysis

This is Meadowlands Pace night, and there is a stakes laden card starting at 6:20 PM EST. There are three Pick 4's, the middle sequence starts in Race 8, and it has a $100,000 guaranteed pool. The last Leg is in Race 11, the $668,000 Meadowlands Pace, and that sequence will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 8 (9:17 PM EST)

2-Twin B Joe Fresh (9/2)-There are many who will single Sylvia Hanover, she is a great filly but this Chris Ryder pupil should be a major player. Doesn't need to have the lead turning for the wire to win but should be racing near the top of the stack with this post draw. Gets a chance to get revenge on Sylvia after a 3rd place finish in the Fan Hanover and this time should be closer to the chalk throughout.
5-Slyvia Hanover (9/5)-This gal checks all the boxes, has won 11 of 12 lifetime and is 3 for 3 in 2023. The case could be made that she looks stronger as a sophomore but the one fly in the ointment might be first time racing at M1. Deserves respect but I will hold back on complete devotion and use 2 others that appear to have a winning profile.
11-Strong Poison (3-1)-Came 3rd to the Sylvia in the BC Final in October. There's no embarrassment to that and the question is whether Poison is a better horse now. My guess is yes. This is the 2nd time for Lasix after storming home with a 53.1 back half at HoP on 6-30. Obviously, this post could present a challenge but the 2 rail horses have gate speed. Yannick Gingras won't be bashful, he could get a decent seat and look to rally down the lane.

Race 9 (9:42 PM EST)

1-Silver Label (5/2)-Liked her last week and she closed like a jet. Should get a cozy trip and likes to race near the top of the stack. Finished 4th in her first start of the season and in every race since has either won or finished second (9-5-3-0).
2-Grace Hill (2-1)-Surged up to take the lead and was no match late for the one above. Grace deserves respect, not only for winning the first 5 starts this year but she didn't race poorly last week. Still closed in 26.2 although finishing a distant 2nd to the winner who sizzled the last panel in 25.3.
5-Max Contract (10-1)-Will swing for a price with this Julie Miller trainee who draws well and had no chance from post 10 in last. Has a 148.3 mark here and tries Lasix for the first time. Has won 6 of 7 at M1 and if Andy Miller can work a solid trip this mare could surprise.

Race 10 (10:10 PM EST)

2-Air Power (7/5)-Dexter Dunn gets the call and won't be 10 lengths back at the first call tonight. Should be closer to the lead throughout and looks the part of a 7/5 chalk.
5-Gaines Hanover (4-1)-Last year's Breeders Crown Champion should get it all in gear for this race. Louis Roy is in from Ontario, and he can work a very good trip with this post draw.
7-Oh Well (3-1)-Has not won this year (0-4), has been close, and was off about 4 weeks between the last 2 races. Might be overlooked at the windows and offer some value. Has hit the board in all 9 M1 starts and has 3 pictures (9-3-6-0).

Race 11 (10:41 PM EST)

1-Fulton (8-1)-Dexter Dunn picks here over the #3 which was a bit of a surprise. Got an awful trip last week. Floated out wide into the opening turn and then stayed parked out into super fast fractions and had opportunities to get to the rail. The price is right to include and will respect the connections. The steer and finish should be better.
3-Christchurch (10-1)-Any horse who is pressed and goes a 52.1 half and ends with a 27.3 last panel to lose by only a length, has my respect. Gingras should be able to work a more efficient trip and is a main player unless last week took a heavy toll.
5-Confedrerate (6/5)-This is an outstanding 3-year-old and should be in the thick of things again, and no doubt deserves to be the program chalk. But this is such a deep field and could be bet down off the morning line. Tim Tetrick will put this colt in play and give him a chance to cross the wire first.

Canterbury Park - Race #6

#1 Samurai Mike	He might offer a decent enough price while stepping up again, but I think he might get a cozy trip from the inside in a race that might have a handful of forward players but not a ton of serious early burn. I guess his overall form suggests he's most likely underneath, but this might be the right group at the right time.
#3 Channel Won	The move back to the grass should work in his favor, as he has run some pretty decent races at these types of trips and doesn't seem overmatched on class.
#2 Released	He finished in front of the top pair in their last meetings, so he's obviously a player if he's able to hold form through this, and he figures to be in a pretty perfect spot waiting to get first jump or prompting the splits.
Race Summary	Samurai Mike goes third off the break and might find himself in a really good spot from the fence, and the two-back run says he's a player on class.

Canterbury Park - Race #7

#2 Midnight Current	The price probably gets short here, but her form is super reliable, and the only one in here I really fear a bit -- the rail runner -- has been no match for her in repeated recent meetings. Probably tough and a logical multi-race single.
#1 Let's Skeedaddle	On form she looks like the most reasonable one to challenge the top choice, but she has that one in her company lines quite a bit, and the matchups have not gone in her favor. Capable with the best local turf route jockey for your dollar up.
#6 Scent of Success	She's got pace to get up top, but she has always been a little iffy in the lane against stakes company, and I assume she'll find at least one or two of these a little bit too tough in the final yards.
Race Summary	Midnight Current is probably odds-on here, but her form seems to warrant it, and she has already had the number of her main danger on paper drawn just inside. Guessing she'll get you through this leg.

Canterbury Park - Race #9

#7 West Island	He rolled that group last out to graduate off the bench, and I think his pace makes him a big player from the draw, as he can press the other pace from the outside the entire way. Let's see if he can keep the momentum going.
#2 Sir Sterling	His local form has been sharp, and he has the pace that should leave him up on the splits but also potentially taking pressure from the outside. Better stuff is formidable.
#4 Distorted Pro	Would have liked to see him land that softer spot last out, but he'll go second off a four-month break today with some pretty tough customers in those company lines over the winter. Logical player.
Race Summary	Think #3 It's Bob's Business might be able to bounce back at a decent price to land a piece of this, too, but West Island gets the strong lean for me to close out the day with a great draw to be a thorn in everyone's side.

Race Summary	VIOLENT ROCK raced 4-wide on the first turn and flattened out in the final sixteenth while chasing the even-money winner at Charles Town. He cuts back to a one-turn sprint for his second start this year and should get an ideal pace flow to launch an upset bid. Bet to win and place.

Laurel Park - Race #4

#3 FREE SQUARE (10-1)	Return to sprint, return to come-from-behind tactics gives him upset chance.
#6 WILD BEHAVIOR (9-5)	Led at every call but one in four starts since the claim by Magee.
#5 HE’S INCREDIBLE (6-1)	Rallied into hard-dueling leaders, just missed in blanket finish, loves to win.
Race Summary	FREE SQUARE was ‘keen’ when clearing to a long lead from post 10 at 7F but wilted in mid-stretch. He cuts back to 6F, a move that worked well earlier this year when he blew a clear lead at one mile and came back to romp from off the pace. Play a 3-ALL exacta.

Laurel Park - Race #6

#6 GENIEINABRIDLE (6-1)	Ness claim seeks form reversal on return to sprint, will get pace to run at.
#8 SWEET BEAUTY (4-1)	Good speed, favorable post, settled for minor awards in six 2023 starts.
#2 TRITONE GAL (5-1)	At proper level, slow start proved costly as beaten fave off layoff.

2^nd race [Alw 50000s, 6F] – (2) Sugar Gray Leonard made his second start of the year while moving to the barn of Rick Dutrow and improved his speed figure. He broke last and rallied to fourth beaten by just a length. He will get a fast pace to set up his late run. (6) Iceatude was claimed for $50,000 last time at Ellis Park when he rallied to finish second. (5) Talkin Pharoah won an open company maiden claimer by four lengths last time for Linda Rice who took him two races back for $50,000. (1) Win for Gold is projected to be on the lead as great gate rider Kendrick Carmouche gets on board and will try to nurse his speed.
4^th race [Diana, 1 1/8 mi TURF] – (2) In Italian will try and win his third Grade 1 stake in a row this year for Chad Brown. The son of Dubawi won this race last year and has won 4 out of his last 5 races. The only loss was a second in the Breeders’ Cup when he was beaten by a length by an Aidan O’Brien runner. With heavy rain on Thursday evening and more rain expected In Italian will probably have to deal with wet turf for the first time. (1) Fev Rover made her 2023 debut at Woodbine for Mark Casse and was an impressive winner of the Nassau (G2) when he rallied from last to win by more than four lengths. (3) Marketsegmentation is the second of four horses from the Brown barn and is the most lightly raced filly in the field. She won her last three starts of the year in stakes races beginning at Gulfstream Park and then moved to Belmont Park where she won the Beaugay (G3) and her first Grade 1 in the New York. (4) Fluffy Socks is the third from Brown and she won her only start of the year at Churchill Downs on Derby weekend in the Distaff Turf Mile (G2).
5^th race [NY, Alw 95000 N1X, 6F] – (8) Mariachi (C) was bet down from 4-1 to 2-1 and finished third in a blanket finish in his first start of the year while looking like a horse that needed a race. He could get loose on the lead in this spot. (2) Always Charming has a pair of wins and a second in his last three starts. (5) Agility finished in the top three in 5 out of his last 6 starts. (7) G Munning will make his first start of the year as he moves to the barn of Chad Brown and the blinkers will come off.

Kelso Stakes – Grade 3 | Purse $175,000 | One Mile on Turf | Four Year Olds and Upward
Pace analysis:
It appears highly likely Big Everest (5) and Mid Day Image (3) will both want the lead from the start, given the former has earned his last FIVE wins on the front from the moment the gate opened and the latter is stretching out off three sprints and earned his last FOUR route wins leading from start to finish. Additionally, Filo De Arianna (6) has gone for the lead in his last three turf races. As such, it’s difficult to imagine anything other than a two or three horse early pace battle which sets up the stalkers and closers.
Main Contenders:
Anaconda (7) and Ice Chocolate (4) as well as Annapolis (2) and Casa Creed (8) are the four that fit the bill as horses to take the most advantage of the fast early pace, but only the first two offer value and they certainly can make us a nice profit if they run as expected. Anaconda (7) hasn’t won a graded stakes yet but did win the Elusive Quality Stakes at Belmont two months ago with a big rally from seventh, prior to that missing by a nose in the Danger’s Hour Stakes at this mile trip. Beaten just a neck, head and half-length in a four horse blanket finish in the Grade 3 Poker Stakes last month at this trip, Anaconda could be in line for the best race of his career and a mild upset win, opening at 6 to 1.
Ice Chocolate (4) opens at ridiculously high odds of 20 to 1 in spite of nearly winning the Grade 2 Kennedy Road Stakes last fall. He rarely runs this far but missed by a neck at a mile and one-sixteenth on grass nearly a year ago this week and he is dropping significantly in class from the Grade 1 Jaipur Stakes in June at six furlongs, won by 2022 Breeders’ Cup Sprint winner Caravel. In that race Ice Chocolate rallied from 11^th of 14 and ended up sixth and just three lengths from the winner. He’s worked exceptionally well since and forms an uncoupled entry with Filo Di Arianna, as they share the same owner, and trainer in Mark Casse, who may have a one-two punch here as Filo Di Arianna insures a very honest past for Ice Chocolate to close into. One race before the Jaipur, Ice Chocolate earned a career best 113 Equibase Speed Figure when second in the Grade 3 Jacques Cartier Stakes and that figure and effort are as good as the best figures and efforts of Annapolis (2), who opens at 8 to 5 compared to 20 to 1 for Ice Chocolate.
Annapolis (2) isn’t necessarily a false favorite but he’s not a standout in my opinion considering when winning the non-graded Opening Verse Stakes in May, his only start this year, he only earned a 98 figure However, that effort came after six months off and now he’s returning from a two month layoff and over the course of his win last summer in the Saranac Stakes so he could be formidable. Luckily, if he wins and one of the two decent odds horses in Anaconda or Ice Chocolate finishes second, we can still make a profit.
Casa Creed (8) won the Grade 1 Fourstardave Stakes last August at this distance on this inner turf course and likely is aiming for that race again, as he returned from four months off in the Jaipur and finished third. Last year he won the Jaipur so it’s possible now as a seven year old he’s not as good as last year, and his 5 to 2 starting odds do not line up with his probability to win, but like Annapolis, Casa Creed can be used with Anaconda and Ice Chocolate on exacta tickets we play.

Considering Ice Chocolate (4) has five second place finishes to go along with five career wins, we can also play an exacta of ALL over Ice Chocolate (4) instead of a place bet.

3rd race – (7) Polar Bear Plunge has a pair of quick gate works and seems ready for a strong effort. (1) Coulditbemajic had a useful debut and may like turf. (2) Rapid Grey could be a threat in this field. (11) McVicker has a nice pedigree for turf. Betting strategy: 7 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-7-11. Doubles: 1-2-7-11 with 1-4-6.
4th race – (1) Megan’s Clara has speed from the rail and should be hard to catch. (6) Cancel This looks like the main threat. (4) Sparkle of Hope will benefit from a quick pace. Betting strategy: 1 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-4-6.
6th race – (6) Temple had some trouble last time and could bounce back here. (2) Background looks like the one they have to catch. (8) Starting Over will be a threat on his best try. (5) Vintage Print cannot be ignored in this spot. Betting strategy: 6 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-5-6-8.
9th race – (7) Red Hot Rod was given a freshening and seems ready for a big effort with blinkers added. (11) B D Valeski had a troubled trip last time and could rebound here.
