COMMENTS: CONSUMER SPENDING is one for one on Monmouth grass in her last. She has a chance to be better in the classic third start after a layoff. SURPRISINGLY hit the board in six of seven on turf and has some sharp workouts between races. GAMS MISSION has a couple grade III wins on her resume and will be coming hard at the wire. PERSONAL BEST never ran out of the money at the distance and should be ready for another good one with a bullet workout on July 15.

COMMENTS: PROXY looks like the class of this spot. His resume says he should step up his output in round two off the bench. WHELEN SPRINGS is stepping up in class by a lot. His early pace should put him close to the front and that is where he has the most success. ANTIGRAVITY is coming off one of his best efforts showing the most late punch. COMMENTS: MID DAY IMAGE could get an excellent trip as a stalker. Most of the early speed is on the outside which could make for an aggressive start as they hustle to clear the field before the turn. NOTHING BETTER drops in class from a Grade I to a level where he is not far from winning four in a row. FORE HARP ran the highest last race speed figure and will try to take them wire to wire. CORDUROY ROAD ran better internal numbers from gate to wire in his last outing and first on Monmouth turf.

COMMENTS: ARABIAN KNIGHT is yet to be challenged winning both of his races by pulling away by a lot in the stretch. SALUTE THE STARS made a power move in the stretch last out. Adding some distance today could be beneficial today. MAGE is working well and should be fit for his return with a bunch of long works getting prepped for his return. TAPIT TRICE ran better pace numbers from start to finish in his last race which is usually an indication of a horse on the upswing.

San Clemente Stakes – Grade 2 | Purse $200,000 | One Mile on Turf | Fillies, Three Year Olds
Pace analysis:
With 14 entered, plus two also-eligibles, this is going to be a heck of a race and also likely good betting race with no strong favorite. With the fairly short run to the first turn, horses with early speed have to commit to try to get the lead, and that applies to (13) Fast and Shiny, (15) Broadway Girls (who is an also-eligible) and absolutely (2) Ancient Peace. In addition, (1) Flying Connection and (9) Ocean Club are likely to try to push the pacesetters, if not adding to the battle for early contention.
Main Contenders:
All that early tumult leads to a trio of runners getting a benefit to their late kicks, starting with Delight (4), who put in a visually impressive rally from 10^th on the turn to fifth entering the stretch to power off by two lengths when last seen two months ago. That race as an allowance race, but versus older horses, so she moves to three year olds only and fits h ere perfectly for excellent trainer Jonathan Thomas (27% wins on the year), with a FIELD HIGH last race 97 Equibase Speed Figure to improve upon to boot.
Anisette (3) was just as impressive winning her most recent start, also versus older fillies and mares. That was near the end of May, and in her U.S. debut following five months off, a very similar situation to Delight, who had been off for five months as well before winning in May. Anisette broke slow and was last of 12 for the first six furlongs but moved powerfully from 10^th to fifth to the front with a 92 figure effort she too is set to improve off of in her second U.S. start and second off the layoff.
Spicybug (6) is a bit more of a stalker than a deep closer so might be overtaking the tiring leaders and pacesetters before the other two get into high gear. She stretches out to two turns off two wins in a row sprinting on the grass, and on a strong pattern for improvement off 81, then 87 the 96 figures. She’s bred to handles the longer distance with aplomb and rounds out the top trio.
Three more with an outside chance are Wed (11) and The Wild Grazer (14). In spite of potentially disadvantageous posts they both offer value and are not horses which need the lead to succeed, so could drop in mid-pack and make strong rallies. Wed makes her U.S. debut and gets top jockey Juan Hernandez, and she won a Group 2 race on turf in her native France last year so fits at this level. The Wild Grazer rallied from off the pace to miss by a neck in a stakes at a mile on grass earlier this year and had a troubled trip when third in the Senorita Stakes when last seen in May. Mullins is having a very strong year and wins 26% of the time with Berrios in the saddle as today. Among the “early” pace types, Ocean Club (9), best chance to stick around and opens at 15 to 1:

1^st race [Md Sp Wt, 1 1/16 mi TURF] – (7) Noted (A) was 3-1 in his debut but got taken up at the start and made a late run for second for Todd Pletcher. (1) Ask Isaac will make his debut for Bill Mott and is out of a mare that won $339,000 as a stakes winner and produced a winner from her only starter. (4) Noble Wave got bumped at the break in his first start and was forced to run on the inside on the turn. (5) Uncle Bo will make his first start being from a dam that had a winner from her first foal.
9^th race [CCA Oaks (G1), 1 1/8 mi] – (5) Hoosier Philly has regained the excellent form that she had as a 2-year-old when she won her first three starts. She got loose on the lead and won the Monomoy Girl at Ellis Park last month and is likely to get the lead easily again in this small field that lacks other frontrunners. (4) Gambling Girl missed winning the Kentucky Oaks by a neck in her last start for Todd Pletcher. The NY-bred has been racing open company stakes. (2) Wet Paint won three stakes races in a row at Oaklawn Park and then was fourth in the Ky. Oaks and second in the Monomoy Girl. The Oaklawn form has not held up well at other tracks. (1) Southlawn won her first two starts of 2023 at Fair Grounds including the Fair Grounds Oaks (G2) but at 5-1 she was 10^th in the Ky. Oaks. She has been off since then making you think that something went wrong in Kentucky.
10^th race [Alw 149500 N1X, 6F] – (6) Daufuskie Island has won three races in a row moving from a $32,000 claimer through the NY-bred allowance conditions but is still eligible for the first-level allowance against open company. (8) Accretive has been off since last summer at Saratoga where he was second in the Amsterdam (G2). (7) Who Hoo Thats Me rarely runs a bad race and won through the NY-bred allowance conditions. He was second in his first try at this level. (9) A La Carte was a heavy favorite in his first three starts where he was in the top three. Bill Mott tried the turf last time which did not go well.
11^th race [Clm 25000, 6F] – (7) Senor Jobim (B) returns from a February layoff when he broke last, rushed up on the outside, and finished fourth in a blanket finish. (1) Catchyasoon/(1A) Flint Ridge are both win contenders for Linda Rice. (8) Digital Future was a winner at this claiming level two races back. (6) Seven Nation Army was claimed for $32,000 at Ellis Park last time when he finished second and the blinkers go on along with Irad Ortiz.
Best bets: Hoosier Philly (9^th); Daufuskie Island (10^th). Best value: Noted (1^st); Senor Jobim (11^th).

1st race – (2) Strike That was claimed out of a win by Knapp and should prevail again in this field. (3) Handr’sdream could control the pace and be hard to catch. (4) Tetsu returns to a claimer and may figure in the outcome. (6) Windribbon looms a threat cutting back to a sprint. Betting strategy: 2 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-3-4-6.
4th race – (5) Mrs. Astor rallied wide to finish third in a Grade 3 stakes at Churchill Downs and has a class edge here. (1) Ruby Nell looked sharp in a maiden win and will be helped by a ground-saving trip. (7) Alvina was a troubled fourth in her U.S. debut and should be closer here.
