Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

    July 24, 2023 | By Al Cimaglia
Yonkers Raceway has an 11-race card scheduled and the 0.50 Pick 5 with a $10,000 guaranteed pool begins in Race 5. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 8, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 8 (9:20 PM EST)

1-Hickfromfrenchlick (9/2)-Pulled away last time in a fast mile and now steps up. Draws the rail which should help, and the Schnittker barn has heated up.
2-Great Somewhere (9-1)-Couldn't catch a well-meant winner in last who paced a quick 150.3 mile and will look for value in this leg. This 5-year-old has finished 2nd in 4 straight and has proven to be a player versus this kind.
6-Hemsworth N (9/2)-This is the 3rd start off the bench and could be sitting on a big try. Showed early speed in last, Gingras takes the lines and he should be leaving. Has won 5 of 11 at YR, could land on the point and might be tough to collar.

    Race 9 (9:40 PM EST)

3-Family Recipe (7/2)-Holland has enough gate speed to race near the top of the stack. Won last week and has beaten this kind and better here. Steps up but still fits and can double up with the right trip.
5-The Regulator (5/2)-Bartlett gets the assignment and he is the usual pilot. The race will likely go through this 7-year-old. Drops to the level of the last win on 6-27 and the Per Engblom barn has been clicking.

    Race 10 (10:00 PM EST)

1-Don Domingo N (3-1)-It's tough to separate the 3 program chalks and this veteran comes off a needed start. Don has had issues but drops to a soft spot and should be a main player if dialed on high.
2-Alotbetter N (5/2)-Drops after 2 races versus $40k claimers and did win in the first try with that kind. Now returns to the level where 2 straight wins were posted and both came from this post.
3-Brackley Beach (3-1)-Got on the point, set some quick fractions and showed some guts down the lane to hold on against this kind. That was the 1st win in 21 tries in 2023 and may have the confidence to take control and not look back again.

    Race 11 (10:20 PM EST)

1-Pretty Handsome (7-1)-Comes off 2 no-move miles from outside posts. Beat this kind on 6-3 in a 152.2. Dube can work a good trip from this post and will take a swing for a price.
3-Pointomygranson (3/2)-Was caught at the wire for a dead-heat finish after landing on the point from the 8-hole. Not loving the 3/2 morning line price but deserves respect after getting significant post relief. Kakaley sticks and should be on the engine or no worse than in the pocket off the gate.

    $1.00 Late Pick 4

    1,2,6/3,5/1,2,3/1,3

          Race 2 - Claiming - 5.5f on the Dirt. Purse: $12600 Class Rating: 77

FOR THREE YEAR OLDS AND UPWARD WHICH HAVE NOT WON TWO RACES SINCE JANUARY 24, 2023 OR WHICH HAVE NEVER WON FOUR RACES. THREE YEAR OLDS, 120 LBS.; OLDER, 124 LBS. NON-WINNERS OF A RACE SINCE MAY 24 ALLOWED 2 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $5,000

          RECOMMENDED CHOICES
          # 5 HERO TIGER 5/2
          # 7 MIAMI CHROME 10/1
          # 1 BOLDLEE 8/5
HERO TIGER looks to be a decent contender. Overall the speed figures of this equine look respectable in this race. This horse is prominent in this field in earnings per start at the distance/surface. This gelding has posted some nice finishing positions in his last couple of tries. MIAMI CHROME - Ought to be given a shot - I like the figs from the last contest. A solid 87 avg Equibase class rating may give this gelding a distinct class edge versus this group. BOLDLEE - Like the finish positions in the last several contests. Looks decent for the conditions of this competition today, showing solid figures in dirt sprint races lately.

            Louisiana Downs - Race #1 - Post: 4:05pm - Claiming - 5.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $19,000 Class Rating: 74

            Rating:

            #3 INAWIC (ML=8/1)
            #1 MISS PRIORITY (ML=12/1)
            #6 OURPERFECTPRINCESS (ML=7/2)

INAWIC - Trainer, Ward, has been deliberate with this mare off the layoff. Look for a solid effort today. Last ran at Louisiana Downs and finished fourth. Reviewing her Past Performances, I see she was close at the end, within 5 of the winner. MISS PRIORITY - The jockey/conditioner duo of Melancon and Duhon has a strong ROI together. I believe that this race's shorter trip should help this filly. Filly took a little vacation, but has been racing into shape. Looking at the PPs, it shows this filly has won at nice odds. OURPERFECTPRINCESS - Rider jumped on this mare's back for the first try on Jul 1st. Should be in touch with the animal even better in today's contest. I think the shorter trip will help this mare stay the trip. Have to give this mare a shot. Ran a strong contest last out within the last month.

            Vulnerable Contenders: #4 DROP DEAD SEXY (ML=2/1), #2 SUMITUP (ML=5/2), #5 SCAMPERING GRAYCE (ML=6/1),

DROP DEAD SEXY - The favorite is vulnerable here with the lack of works. All types of crazy early zip on board for this event. Almost no chance for this front-runner. SUMITUP - Improbable that this animal will finish better than she did last time when finishing fourth. May bounce off of that last strong effort. SCAMPERING GRAYCE - Not probable that the speed rating she garnered on May 29th will be good enough in this clash.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: #3 INAWIC is going to be the play if we are getting 4/1 or better

              Mountaineer Park - Race #1 - Post: 7:00pm - Maiden Special - 5.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $16,500 Class Rating: 39

              Rating:

              #6 PORTIA'S HOPE (ML=6/1)
              #5 JULES RULES (ML=5/2)
              #4 PETITE N' SMITTY (ML=5/1)

PORTIA'S HOPE - Generally, I don't like to see a filly run against the opposite sex like she did Jun 25th. Good to see she's back with her own sex today. Dixon brings her right back. I advise you stick with this live filly. I'm focusing on the class of this horse, and this one is the 'classiest' of the bunch. I always like to see a campaigner getting Lasix for the first time. Dixon adds it on this one today. JULES RULES - Baird enters this horse in a spot where she should fit well based on her last 2 speed figs. Last time around the track was at Charles Town in a race with a class rating of 59. Dropping considerably in Equibase class figure this time out puts her in a solid position today. A repeat of that latest race on November 4th where she registered a speed figure of 47 looks high enough to triumph in this event. PETITE N' SMITTY - This mare was impressive in finishing second on a slow track on June 6th. A signal that she should do well against these horses in her first turf try. I usually like playing sprinters who are 3-4 races into a return. Dixon drops her down to this class. You don't need too much more handicapping data to figure that this horse has a shot at this level.

              Vulnerable Contenders: #7 TAPTAP (ML=4/1), #9 ISLE BE THERE (ML=5/1), #2 LAURA'S GRAND (ML=8/1),

TAPTAP - No accomplishments for this questionable contender in a sprint contest over the last couple of months tells me that this mare is in a tough spot ISLE BE THERE - Hasn't hit the board in any sprint affairs recently. Not probable to see her doing it today either. LAURA'S GRAND - This mare hasn't had any strong finishes in sprint races in the last couple of months. When looking at today's class figure, she will have to register a better speed figure than last time out to compete in this turf sprint.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - JULES RULES - I like to check out the TrackMaster Platinum PPs to look for the top horse in earnings per start. This race horse looks good to me so I'm making a wager on her.

                RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                # 2 C P THREE 7/2
                # 6 SMACKZILLA 10/1
                # 4 TRIPP'S HIT 3/1
C P THREE is my choice. Has to be carefully examined given one of the top sires around. Sire -Ez Effort- has produced offspring who have done very well in their first attempts. Gamblers may be making a risky move ignoring this conditioner working with a maiden first time starter. SMACKZILLA - Good chance to finish in the top three as sire's fillies and colts have been moving solidly recently. Roman has recent ROI figs which make this one a good wager.
