“What You Need to Know” - Saratoga
by Jeff Siegel, 1stbet.com Handicapper & Analyst

    Grade Descriptions:
    Grade A=Highest degree of confidence
    Grade B=Solid Play.
    Grade C=Least preferred or pass
Grade X=probable winner but likely at odds too short to play

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
    RACE 1: Post: 1:10 ET Grade: X
Main ticket: (in order of preference): Pass/No Play
    Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: The Wednesday opener is for hurdlers. We will pass the race.

    *

    RACE 2: Post: 1:46 ET Grade: C+
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 4-Silk Trade; 1-Lastchanceatglory
    Backups/Savers/Underneath: none

Forecast: Silk Trade was a $62,500 claim in April and returns in a $40,000 seller for new trainer Robertino Diodoro, who uses this class drop maneuver often and with a fair amount of success (he’s 21% with the first off the claim angle). You’re always guessing with the condition of the claiming horse, and it’s possible the veteran gelding, despite having won his last pair, has gone south after remaining in the barn for three months. If healthy, he’ll obviously be tough to beat. Lastchanceatglory has been claimed in each of his last nine starts (is that some kind of record?) but was a voided sale for $32,000 in his most recent start. Linda Rice, who had him three races back, raises him a notch, so she must think he’s okay. A winner of three of his last four starts and with strong numbers for the level, the son of Goldencents is the one to fear most. Tread lightly here.

    *

    RACE 3: Post: 2:19 ET Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 7-Gram; 10-Inca Mummy
    Backups/savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Gram should have been unsaddled in her last race when facing similar state-bred fillies sprinting on grass. The daughter of Maclean’s Music was off slowly from the rail, moved up to be within range but was shut off on the turn, regained her momentum in the lane and finished with good courage but simply had too much to do. If she can avoid trouble today, she should beat this field at a price most likely lower than her morning line of 2-1. Inca Mummy has breezed well enough for her debut to deserve a reasonable look at first asking. At 5-1 on the morning line and with the barn’s “go-to” rider Luis Saez taking the call, she could turn up a live item.

    *

    RACE 4: Post: 2:52 ET Grade: X
Main ticket (in order of preference): 1-Echo Zulu
    Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Echo Zulu made her seasonal debut at Churchill Downs in late May and crushed her outclassed rivals in the Winning Colors S.-G3 while on the pace throughout. She’s a bit quicker early then her chief rival Frank’s Rockette and that, along with her perfect 2-for-2 record over the Saratoga main track, makes her the one to beat in in this year’s renewal of the four runner Honorable Miss Handicap. You can make her a short priced rolling exotic single or simply pass the race.

    *

    RACE 5: Post: 3:26 ET Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 1-Quality G
    Backups/Savers/Underneath: St. Joe Louis.

Forecast: Quality G shows up in a seller for the first time while obviously being culled from the stable (realistically so) and looks to have found his friends in this $35,000 middle distance turf event over the inner course. His comeback was disappointing, but the early splits were hot, and the race flow probably cooked him. His numbers from last year when facing considerably better foes should be more than good enough to beat this restricted (nw-2) group.

    *

    RACE 6: Post: 4:00 ET Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 7-Athena Beach; 1-Ichiban
    Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Athena Beach seeks her third straight win has numbers that fit on this circuit at this level. The Penn National shipper has been in front at the first call in all four of her career starts but we suspect stalk and pounce strategy will be employed in this nine furlong main track state bred event due to another committed speed type being drawn inside of her. That filly, Ichiban, almost certainly will be sent from the bell from her rail draw while stretching out again after a clever seven furlong maiden score here two weeks ago. Her numbers are rising, her form is improving, and the Linda Rice barn hits at 27% with the sprint-to-route angle. The daughter of Street Sense is the likely choice and one to beat.

    *

    RACE 7: Post: 4:34 ET Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 2-Our Shot; 8-Arrest Me Red
    Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Let’s go with the progressive Kantharos sprinter Our Shot to beat the proven turf pro Arrest Me Red in this third level allowance dash while including both in our rolling exotic play. ‘Shot missed at odds-on in the Get Serious Stakes at Monmouth Park last month but earned a strong speed figure while well clear of a next out winner, and a similar performance today – or a repeat of his winning race before last – should be good enough to get the John Terranova-trained gelding home. He has proven to be effective on the pace or from a mid-pack stalking position so Luis Saez can assess the race flow (which projects to be soft) and choose a strategy. ‘Red will race with Lasix for the first time in his 15 race career and certainly is eligible to improve for that reason alone. He’s been a winner of just one race from eight starts in the past couple of years while facing the best in his division and this drop into the allowance ranks certainly could perk him up. Also, he was a stakes winner over this course and distance two years ago.

    *

    RACE 8: Post: 5:10 ET Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 2-Amanda’s Folly; 1-Cinderella’s Cause; 5-Sweet Mystery.
    Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Amanda’s Folly lost a toughie when worn down late in a one-turn miler at this level at Belmont Park earlier this month (she was four lengths clear of the rest) but at this nine furlong distance the Linda Rice-trained filly looks likely to inherit a cozy stalking early position and then have her chance to kick on when given here cue. Cinderella’s Cause lands the rail and could be quite dangerous with a loose-on-the-lead trip. Sweet Mystery missed at 70 cents on the dollar when a no-excuse third in the same race ‘Folly exits. She has races that make her competitive but has never really been one to trust.

    *

    RACE 9: Post: 5:44 ET Grade: A-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 1-Avenue Niel
    Backups/Savers/Underneath: 7-Elle Est Forte; 10-I’m So Sorry.

Forecast: Avenue Niel makes her U.S. debut in this mini-marathon turf affair for first level allowance fillies and mares and based on her French form the Christophe Clement-trained import should outclass this field. Listed stakes placed at Longchamp when last seen 11 months ago, the Irish-bred filly gets Lasix, has run well fresh in the past, and is proven at the trip. The stable has powerful stats with layoff runners, so we’re going to assume that she’s fit and ready. We’ll make her a win play at or near her morning line of 5/2 and give her the main push in the various rolling exotics.

    *

    RACE 10: Post: 6:18 ET Grade: C+
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 3-Vince the Prince; 8-Conquist; 11-Your Mission
    Backups/savers: 4-English Storm

Forecast: The finale is a maiden claiming turf router. We’ll go three deep and hope that’s sufficient. Vince the Prince drops out of straight maiden races and should find this group much more to his liking. He’s a fit on speed figures and projects to settle into a comfortable stalking position and have every chance from there. Conquist finished a reasonable second in a similar spot at Belmont Park earlier this month and not much more will be needed to graduate today. The main concern is that he’s already had 11 chances. Your Mission has finished in the frame in his two, but his numbers have remained about the same. He’ll be doing his best work from far back.

      #3
      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

      Hawthorne - Race #6
#9 Grey Streak He beat some of these in a big upset earlier this season, and he's coming off a mild Ellis rally behind a longshot pace winner that might be a touch better than it looks. Think he'll be a decent enough price again today.
#1 Sailing Solo Forward player has always done his best work right up top, but he does have a mild rating gear that has helped him land some shares in the past. He's not meeting a ton of other pace today, so he's probably in a good spot the entire way. Looks like the one to beat.
#6 Protonic Power He's a pretty honest finisher, but he has to turn tables on a few of these from recent starts, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him take a little bit of cash with these. Obvious player, but maybe an underlay in the win pool.
Race Summary Grey Streak might offer a price that's just reasonable enough against some runners he beat a couple months ago, and I think he's tactical enough to find a really good first-over spot behind the pace.
      Hawthorne - Race #7
#7 Off Ramp Interested to see what kind of price she's going to offer, as her last one was super sharp, and she should be in line for another good trip with some versatility that will give her rider options as the race unfolds out of the gate.
#4 Oeuvre The dirt form on her page is pretty wild, as she's riding a big winning streak on the main track and has been very tough over the local footing. This is a deeper group than she rolled last out, but she's tough if she brings her best stuff.
#2 Cheetara Think her recent form is pretty in line with the better ones in here, and she might be a touch more tactical than her last couple would suggest. Late threat for all.
Race Summary Off Ramp has plenty of appeal while in good form, and she might find a similar trip to the one that helped her home against lesser last out. If she's not over the top after the last one, she's a player here.
      Hawthorne - Race #8
#7 Smiling Stormy Taking a swing with this one who at least showed some better pace when he cut back around one turn for that second start, and I wonder if another chance at a sprint trip will help him stick around better late.
#4 Ice Shard He moved forward nicely in that second start when getting a turf route, but he's going to have to hurry to get in the picture late while turning back to this sharper trip. Wouldn't be a shock.
#9 Congrats on Fifty He showed some good pace before fading in the debut run, but he'll get turf and a change of scenery to a softer circuit today. He figures to take it to them early and might not stop.
Race Summary Smiling Stormy should be a solid price off a couple flat tries, but this turf sprint trip intrigues me a little bit after she got involved early a bit better last time around.

        Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

        Penn National - Race #1
#4 MISCHIEF WARRIOR (5-2) Handled surface switch well, led until late, price comes down.
#1 HANFORD (9-5) Unhurried until turn, lacked room, some late energy as beaten favorite again.
#3 HE’S FANCY FREE (15-1 Plagued by wide trips, tries turf, dam was $300k earner on dirt.
Race Summary MISCHIEF WARRIOR inched away some on the final turn, only to get caught late in his first turf test. He meets the same main contenders and the shorter route distance suits him well. Bet to win and place.
        Penn National - Race #3
#1 STANHOPE (4-1) Looms forward factor throughout on the class drop but has rail to negotiate.
#5 BRIT’S CANDYMAN (5-1) Dueled with fave Cheers For Kitten (3-8, $45k), held third on soft turf.
#4 KING ECLIPTICAL (6-1) Finished first or second in 4 of 8 grass sprints, makes third start off layoff.
Race Summary STANHOPE has good speed and can make good use of it from the rail in this spot. He lacked a bit of room in early stretch, then tried to split the top two finishers last out for a $10,000 tag. Bet to win and place and play a 1, 5 with1, 4, 5 with ALL trifecta.
        Penn National - Race #7
#1 BUSTIN WIDE OPEN (8-1) Was gaining between rivals with mid-stretch mishap occurred.
#3 GEMMA’S CURLS (8-5) Stakes-placed sprinter plunges off layoff for top barn, looms odds-on.
#4 UNCAPTURED GRACE (7-2) Rallied for share in last three starts, likely will be bigger price.
Race Summary BUSTIN WIDE OPEN equaled the top speed figure of her career despite being squeezed out of winning contention at the eighth pole. She regrouped to finish determinedly, making her a must play at 8-1 on the morning line. Make a flat win bet and protect it with a 3-1 exacta.

Race 3 - Maiden Special Weight - 5.5f on the Dirt. Purse: $38000 Class Rating: 73

FOR MAIDENS, TWO YEARS OLD. WEIGHT, 119 LBS.

              RECOMMENDED CHOICES
              # 8 FULMINEO 9/2
              # 6 LINZER 5/2
              # 3 INCHON 6/1
FULMINEO is my choice. He is worth a look given that the handler wins 33 percent of his races with two-year olds, which is clearly among the most competitive in the contest. Strong handler with 2 year olds has given bettors good returns (+59 ROI) - very important in two-year old races. LINZER - Fits in well here based on Stidham's strong results with 2 year olds recently. Strong edge in the sire's juvenile race win rate. Horses who have been prepared to race at this distance and surface by Stidham have shown very strong results as of late. INCHON - By Street Sense, has a clear advantage in the bloodlines - brothers and sisters have ran soundly as two-year olds.

                Thistledown - Race #3 - Post: 1:50pm - Claiming - 5.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $12,200 Class Rating: 74

                Rating:

                #1 WIZARD WILLIE (ML=5/1)
#4 NO BANG NO BOOM (IRE) (ML=3/1)

WIZARD WILLIE - Ran last out against a higher rated class of horses at Thistledown. The move down the class ladder should suit him well. You'll be generating profits right and left by turning your betting money onto this jockey/conditioner combination. Finished outside the top 3 last out at Thistledown, but was within 5 lengths of the winner. Opening at 5/1 makes me think he's got a chance. NO BANG NO BOOM (IRE) - Taking a trip down the class ladder; has the class to make his presence felt. A racer coming back this soon after a sharp effort is a good signal.

                Vulnerable Contenders: #6 MON CAMO (ML=2/1), #3 ICONIC (ML=4/1), #2 DAD'S YANKEES (ML=5/1),

MON CAMO - This gelding hasn't had any in the money results in short distance affairs in the last couple months. ICONIC - A bit of a lackluster try when this gelding finished fourth. DAD'S YANKEES - A bit of a less than stellar try when this gelding finished fifth. Difficult to play any mount in a sprint event at 5/1 when he hasn't shown any successful endeavors in sprints in the last couple of months.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Putting our cash on #1 WIZARD WILLIE to win. Have to have odds of at least 8/5 or better though
                EXACTA WAGERS: Box [1,4]

                  Race 3 - Claiming - 5.5f on the Dirt. Purse: $10500 Class Rating: 63

FOR MN-BRED THREE YEAR OLDS AND UPWARD WHICH HAVE NEVER WON TWO RACES. THREE YEAR OLDS, 119 LBS.; OLDER, 124 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $7,500.

                  RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                  # 1 SCATAMARAN 2/1
                  # 3 STUN GUN 4/1
                  # 2 QUARANTENA BAMBINO 7/5
I think SCATAMARAN is a very good choice. Recent figures for the rider - 29 win percent - make this gelding stand out in this group of animals. Looks competitive to be on the lead at the first call. Could best this group of horses in this race based on the speed figure - 63 - of his last contest. STUN GUN - Overall the Equibase Speed Figures of this equine look respectable in this contest. Sound average Speed Figures in dirt sprint races make this pony a solid contender. QUARANTENA BAMBINO - Make a note that this one runs with second time Lasix today. Has competitive Equibase Class Figures relative to this group of animals - worth a look.

                    Penn National - Race #4 - Post: 7:28pm - Allowance - 8.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $28,000 Class Rating: 75

                    Rating:

                    #5 MISS CONVEYOR (ML=5/2)
                    #1 FOXY JUNIOR (ML=4/1)
                    #4 WILL TAKE ROSES (ML=7/2)

MISS CONVEYOR - Sneaky speed on this one. She'll probably be stalking ponies on the back side, then bury them down the stretch. This trainer sure has a knack for stretching out most any equine. Getting the extra distance sure seems to help Kreiser's starters perform well. I like the piece of information that this mare's last figure, 71, is tops in this field. This mare is in good condition. Finished third on July 14th. FOXY JUNIOR - That 71 fig this filly earned in her last event tells me she's a key player this time. Another way to evaluate class is earnings per race. This mount has the uppermost in the field. I think she'll be close at the finish line. Horse has improved at least two speed rating points in last two races. I look for that to continue its positive trend in today's race. WILL TAKE ROSES - Rodriguez and O'Callaghan perform well when they team up. It's hard to beat a +80 return on investment for a jockey and trainer.

Vulnerable Contenders: #3 SUPER DUPER FLY (ML=3/1), #6 ISTHATYOURHARLEY (ML=5/1),

SUPER DUPER FLY - In this situation, this vulnerable equine's inability to close any ground in the last race is a troubling signal. ISTHATYOURHARLEY - Finished first in her most recent effort with a mediocre speed rating. When I look at today's Equibase class figure, it would take an improved performance to score after that in this group.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #5 MISS CONVEYOR to win if you can get at least 5/2 odds
