RACE 1: Post: 2:00 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 7-Burton Way; 8-Habeas; 5-Conquering King
Backups/Savers/Underneath: 4-Upright.

Forecast: Burton Way shows the classic two-sprints-and-a-stretch pattern in his second start off a layoff and should be set to graduate in this moderate maiden $40,000 main track miler. He exits a better than par race for the level and projects to be or near the lead throughout. Habeas went too fast early for his own good in a maiden $50,000 turf event over a mile at Santa Anita and understandably weakened late. He should stick much better today against this softer group if rating tactics are employed. Conquering King shows up in a seller for the first time and should greatly appreciate the class drop. His numbers say he’s a legitimate threat at this level.

RACE 2: Post: 2:34 PT Grade: B
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 2-Tees Touch; 5-Tribal
Backups/Savers/Underneath: 8-Endlessly

Forecast: Tees Touch displayed decent ability in his debut on a “A” circuit track in England (Doncaster) when finishing a good second last month and shows up at Del Mar fresh off the plane seeking ship-and-win money in this mile grass affair for maiden juveniles. The Phil D’Amato-trained gelding lands a cozy inside draw and is a standout on paper compared with the known element. Tribal is a first timer that could pose a legitimate threat. The son of Kingman has done some very good work in the morning preparing for his debut and is likely to fire a big shot first crack out of the box. The edge goes to the gelding with experience – Tees Touch – but we’ll have tickets including both in our rolling exotics.

RACE 3: Post: 3:07 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 3-Cyberking; 7-Baladi; 2-Mister Bold
Backups/savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Cyberviking looks well-spotted in this $32,000 claiming sprint for older horses. The class drop appears warranted and at this level the consistent and genuine Florida-bred gelding – he’s finished first or second in 12 of 16 career starts – appears to have found a field that will allow him to regain his winning form. He has several back speed figures that are better than par for this level. Baladi, another dangerous class dropper, lands the coveted outside post over a main track we know he can handle, and it wouldn’t be surprising if the Hector Palma-trained son of Pioneerof the Nile finds this field well within his range. You have to use him at 8-1 on the morning line. Mister Bold can be tossed in as well. He’s won two of three outings over the Del Mar strip and arrives fresh from a strong win in a starter’s race at Los Alamitos. He’ll be doing his best work late.

RACE 4: Post: 3:39 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 6-Slam Diego; 8-Pacific Zip
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Slam Diego makes her first start on the one level class drop for new trainer Peter Miller, who took this filly for $32,000 out of a solid third place finish in a turf miler. She returns to the main track and shortens to seven furlongs, and it wouldn’t be surprising if she reacts favorably under these conditions. The daughter of Cairo Prince has won over this main track in the past, and with a patient ride she should be heard from in the final stages. Pacific Zip lands the good outside post and is guaranteed an ideal second flight, stalking trip for new trainer Kristin Mulhall. Her recent fourth place finish in a tougher spot at Pleasanton wasn’t bad at all, and on pure numbers she matches up reasonably well with our top pick.

RACE 5: Post: 4:09 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 2-La Vikina; 1-Crimson Rose
Backups/Savers/Underneath: 6-Quiet Secretary.

Forecast: La Vikina can be very effective as the controlling speed but also has shown she can stalk, pounce, and win if the race flow dictates. If Crimson Rose is sent to the front from the rail, ‘Vikina has the option of dropping in using the leader as a prompter. In any case, the Andy Mathis-trained mare should be primed for winning performance in this $25,000 grass miler for fillies and mares. On the other hand, if ‘Rose is left alone, she can take the field a long way and at 12-1 on the morning line offers a reasonable price chance in the rolling exotics.

RACE 6: Post: 4:39 PT Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 3-Cowboys Daughter
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Cowboys Daughter is a Bay Area shipper returning from a six month vacation and is waiver protected in this $10,000 claiming sprint for fillies and mares. She shows the blinkers off angle that always catches our eye and a superior will to win, having taken eight of 16 career starts, several of which earned speed figures far superior to what will be required in this soft assignment. She’s been routing most of her career but actually may prefer this sprint distance, so at 5-1 on the morning line (though we suspect will go lower), she offers a reasonable gamble in the win pool and in the various rolling exotics.

RACE 7: Post: 5:09 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 5-California Bay; 3-Talklessworkmore
Backups/Savers/Underneath: 1-Oubabe, 11-Mamba Cool.

Forecast: California Bay graduated in his second career start last month at Santa Anita and looked pretty decent doing so. The son of California Chrome settled off a moderate pace and then took hold when given his cue to win going away while earning a solid speed figure. Better will be needed for a repeat against this tougher, more experience field, but with another forward move the Jeff Mullins-trained gelding could be up to the task at a decent price. Talklessworkmore has so far in his career preferred to run second or third (eight times) rather than win (just twice) but if he can shake loose early as the controlling speed the Summer Front gelding could get brave and take this field a very long way. He’s solid in the speed figure department and could take advantage of a favorable pace flow.

Backups/Savers/Underneath: 3-Gate to Paradise; 9-Chatalas

Forecast: Thermal has trained like an exceptional prospect and looks set to graduate at first asking in this stronger than par maiden sprint for juvenile fillies. The daughter of Nyquist has done everything in the morning with speed and power and without ever being asked for her best. The work pattern is steady and healthy and should have her fit and ready for a winning performance, so at 5/2 on the morning line let’s make the John Sadler-trained filly a strong win play and major push in the various rolling exotics.

RACE 9: Post: 6:09 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 9-Count Again
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: There’s not a horse in this year’s Eddie Read S.-G2 that couldn’t win with their very best race, so rather than spread deeply in rolling exotic play let’s just pick one and hope to be right. Count Again hasn’t been out since the spring of 2022 but he has fired fresh in the past and is working like he’s fit and ready for trainer Phil D’Amato, who will saddle four of the nine intended starters. The veteran gelding won the Shoemaker Mile-G1 in his last appearance before being sent to the sidelines, and if he comes back as well as he left the son of Awesome Again can pick up where he left off. If it’s not him, it could be any of the other eight starters so let’s take a stand and make this high class million dollar earner a win play and rolling exotic single.

RACE 10: Post: 6:39 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 1-Piroli
Backups/savers: 6-Divine Armor.

Forecast: Based on his career top performance when runner-up in the Hollywood Gold Cup-G1 in late May, Piroli should easily outclass this second level allowance field. He always can be relied on for a solid effort and in fact has finished first or second in seven of 13 career starts, so against this group the son of Battle of Midway seems the solid choice and probably should go lower than his morning line of 5/2. If there is a concern, it’s his rail post and the possibility that he may become mired down on the deepest part of the track, but if he can get off the fence and have dead aim from the far turn to the wire the Michael McCarthy-trained gelding should be along in time.

Main ticket: (in order of preference): 4-Mega Moon; 8-Classically
Backups/savers: 2-Russells Hustle

Forecast: Mega Moon returns to the maiden claiming ranks, removes blinkers, and can win this soft affair with a repeat of his race before last. The lightly raced Frosted gelding projects to enjoy a second flight, stalking trip and then have his chance when the pressure is turned on. Classically shows up in a seller for the first time and should improve enough to at least hit the board. The Phil D’Amato-trained gelding is a one-paced type but switches to Umberto Rispoli and projects to be prominent throughout.

Main ticket: (in order of preference): 3-Weigh the Risks; 6-Justdeny

Forecast: The known element doesn’t impress so let’s focus on a pair of first timers in this middle distance inner turf maiden special weight affair for juvenile fillies. Weigh the Risks - View Workout - has looked like a fairly decent prospect in drills leading up to this race for Chad Brown, who hits at a terrific 24% with first time starters. Drawn nicely inside, the daughter of Mendelssohn should inherit a comfortable ground-saving trip under Flavian Pratt and then have every chance to graduate at first asking. Justdeny likewise has displayed ability in the morning - View Workout - and has been given a strong foundation by trainer Danny Gargan to be fit and ready. Both should be included in rolling exotic play.

Main ticket: (in order of preference): 6-Shigeko; 1-Vintage
Backups/Savers/Underneath: 7-Our Rosie Diamonds.

Forecast: Shigeko, away since December, returns at her lowest level ever for new trainer Linda Rice (good stats with layoff runners) and should be capable of producing a winning late kick in this modest main track miler for $16,000 claiming fillies and mares. However, at 2-1 on the morning line, there isn’t much wagering value to be found. Vintage is guaranteed a ground-saving trip from the rail and could try gate-to-wire tactics for new trainer Jeffrey Englehart. Based on numbers, she’s a solid fit at the level on this circuit.

RACE 3: Post: 2:25 ET Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 1-Growth Capital/1a-Right to Win
Backups/savers/Underneath: 7-War Officer.

Forecast: Either one of the Chad Brown entrants can win this maiden special weight turf event and if both start the entry should be a very short price. Right to Win has rising speed figures, adds blinkers, and exits a powerful race won by future star Northern Invader while Growth Capital, away for 11 months, returns with a healthy series of Monmouth Park workouts and has form last year that is good enough to beat this field, especially if gifted an easy early lead.

RACE 4: Post: 3:00 ET Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 7-Obrigada
Backups/Savers/Underneath: 2-Liberty Flame.

Forecast: Obrigada stumbled badly at the start and wasn’t knocked about when far back in a similar starter sprint here two weeks ago. The Linda Rice-trained filly had a nice half mile breeze since that race, so we’ll assume she’s okay and capable of bouncing back. Worth noting is that the daughter of Alternation is a perfect three-for-three at this six furlong distance.

Main ticket (in order of preference): 2-Ever Summer
Backups/Savers/Underneath: 1-Talbeyah; 7-Whatlovelookslike.

Forecast: Ever Summer appears solid in this second level allowance inner turf mini marathon for fillies and mares and will offer good value at or near her morning line of 7/2. She lost a toughie at Delaware Park on soft ground earlier this month when nailed on the money in a graded stakes event and this return to the allowance ranks for the always formidable Rosario/Clement jockey-trainer team looks like a winning move. Sher might inherit the lead from her cozy inside draw but certainly can stalk and pounce if the race flow dictates.

RACE 6: Post: 4:08 ET Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 3-Waskesiu; 4-Mugen
Backups/Savers/Underneath: 5-Life Talk.

Forecast: Waskesiu breezed like a stone runner - View Workout - in a gate drill July 15 and then a week later produced a bullet five furlong drill (1:00b, the fastest of 12) to set her up nicely for her racing debut. The daughter of American Pharoah has smooth action and excellent speed, and, assuming she breaks well she should be a major player at 4-1 on the morning line. Mugen is another newcomer worth considering. The blazed-face daughter of leading sire Into Mischief from Test S.-G1 winner Paola Queen has looked terrific in her preparatory drills for Steve Asmussen. She brought $1.2 million as a yearling at Saratoga last year for a reason.

Backups/Savers/Underneath: 11-Jerry the Nipper; 9-Easter.

Forecast: Kuramata launches a comeback after finishing up his year 11 months ago with a convincingly win in the Oceanport S. at Monmouth Park in a strong performance that produced a career top speed figure. Now a gelding, the veteran Irish-bred turf specialist need only return as well as he left to outclass his rivals in this three-other-than middle distance affair for trainer Chad Brown, who strikes at a spectacular 30% with layoff runners. He’s proved he can win fresh, and his workouts should have him plenty fit and ready, so at 7/2 on the morning line the son of Australia offers an excellent gambling opportunity in the win pool and in rolling exotic play.

Backups/Savers/Underneath: 7-Atlanta’s Acuna.

Forecast: Rule Breaker drops into a maiden ($30,000) claimer for the first time and returns to the main track for a high percentage outfit based at Monmouth Park. He’s been off the board in all three starts when facing much tougher straight maidens and today will add blinkers for the first time. He’s the best of this lot based strictly on speed figures, so at 5/2 on the morning line the son of Into Mischief looks well placed to graduate.

Backups/Savers/Underneath: 5-Soldier Rising,

Forecast: The 2022 Breeders’ Cup Turf-G1 winner Rebel’s Romance returns to the States for this year’s renewal of the Bowling Green S.-G2 and simply should outclass this field. Unplaced in the Dubai Sheema Classic-G1 in March when seventh behind the world’s best grass runner Equinox, the son of Dubawi should regain his confidence against this group if he’s close to his form from last year, and we suspect he wouldn’t have been shipped across the pond if trainer Charlie Appleby thought he wasn’t. At 8/5 on the morning line and likely to go lower, the 5-year-old gelding is a logical short-priced rolling exotic single.

Main ticket: (in order of preference): 3-Arrasou; 4-Rivierre
Backups/savers: none.

Forecast: Arrasou breezed like quick type - View Workout - for Chad Brown in a team drill earlier this month while appearing plenty fit and ready for a winning effort first time out in this abbreviated turf dash for older fillies and mares. A $235,000 yearling purchase, she finally makes it to the races at age three and attracts Irad Ortiz, Jr. Riviere had a rough trip (off slowly, wide) in her debut last month at Belmont Park before winding up fourth after looming a strong threat in the upper stretch. She has plenty of room to improve and is easily the most dangerous among those that have raced.

Al Cimaglia: Northfield Park Late Pick 4 Analysis

Northfield Park begins the week with a 15-race card. The 0.50 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 11. The sequence has a $10,000 guaranteed pool with a low 14% takeout, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 11

1-The Ideal Dancer (2-1)-Comes off a big try at ScD from the 10-hole to cash a 3rd place check. Ships back and has done good work here winning 3 of 4 races. Merriman should be on the point or close to it throughout and could post its 1st win of 2023 (0-5).
7-Camouflage Money (7-1)-Looking for a lively pace and this Schillaci trainee can stalk and roll by near the wire. Fits with this crew and the post makes the price.

Race 12

9-Full Moon Beach (7/5)-Came 2nd to a strong 1.50 winner in last and has beaten better than this at Nfld in the past. Wrenn will need to get a decent early seat and the rail horse has some gate speed. Should handle this crew with a smooth trip.

Race 13

6-Live And Let Di (9/5)-Was bet down to 6/5 and disapointed backers finishing a beaten 2nd. That's the 4 straight 2nd place finish and may have finally met a beatable field.
9-Lloyds Lady (3-1)-Has raced on a sloppy track in the last 2 starts, came 2nd in last and didn't get a great trip. Has the speed to win if Myers can get off the gate in good shape and find some live cover.

Race 14

1-Favorite Aunt (9/5)-Winner of 2 straight is in line for another cozy trip. Wrenn has worked that plan in the last 2 starts and the most recent win was at this level. Won't be anywhere near 10-1 this time in what looks like a chalky finish to a chalky sequence.
2-Gabbys C Note (2-1)-Finished 2nd at ScD against better leaving from the 2nd tier and that was off a sick scratch. Comes back in sequence, Merriman sticks and has won 3 of 4 here. The 2 chalks could be racing 1-2 all the way around.

Del Mar - Race #8

#14 Greer My Dear	Looking to the also-eligibles for the top two today, as this one goes first time out if she gets a bunch of scratch help. Think she's going to be live if she races today, otherwise will keep an eye out for her again soon.
#11 Nothing Like You	Baffert barns wins about a third of the time with this type of runner locally, and the ROI basically breaks even. Long story short -- she's an obvious player at a likely underlaid price if she draws in.
#6 Whiskey Wild	She showed some pace before just flattening late in the Santa Anita debut, but she's likely to meet some other early heat in here and might have to work for it. Still, that's a decent debut try on her page, and she's in the mix here if she can build on that.
Race Summary	Whiskey Wild gets the call in what is currently the main body of this field, but I think a couple players on the AE list are worth long looks if they're able to go. Guessing there might be some well-meant types in here, but Whiskey Wild has a good foundation off the debut run.

Del Mar - Race #9

#5 Dicey Mo Chara	I'm not typically a huge fan of this guy, but I think he'll be in line for the right kind of trip today, and his overall consistent form should have him in another good spot turning for home. He can get home if a couple things go right.
#8 Mackinnon	Tactical speed has form that sort of leveled off a bit after a useful juvenile season, and I think it's probably a good thing that he's back in stakes company off a modest Belmont comeback. Not impossible.
#9 Count Again	He'd be no surprise with this group if he's ready to roll off the March 2022 layoff, as he's a super honest finisher who has multiple Grade I wins on his page. Today might be the right day to try to beat him?
Race Summary	Dicey Mo Chara might find a good trip in midpack in a race where a couple of the main players want to run from further back. Cutback might help the cause today.

Del Mar - Race #11

#9 Adventuresome	He might appreciate some class relief while getting back on the turf, and he's fast enough to find a spot near the front in a race that doesn't appear to have a ton of serious early speed lined up. Interesting at what is probably a playable price.
#4 Mega Moon	The last couple have been fairly one-paced, but I think those running lines stack up nicely enough with this group -- worry that he'll take a little too much cash.
#1 Cryptoholic	He might have some chance to plug along for a piece, and his best chance would come if a few of the potential forward players drawn outside were to hook up early while he saved ground for a late rally. Big price underneath?
Race Summary	Adventuresome might offer a decent number on the board with a little bit of pace in a race that isn't overloaded with serious burners. Maybe he sticks around better while trying the claiming ranks for the first time.

SAVE GRACE - This equine fits one of my favorite angles. A pony that has a gate drill since her last race and gets blinks on for today's race. That signals to me that the connections are looking for improvement. Be loyal to this horse. No other viable early speed gives this horse a strong chance at the winner's circle. Finished out of the money last out at Belmont Park, but was within 5 lengths of the winner. Opening at 5/1 makes me think she's got a chance. SHIGEKO - When Ortiz and Rice work together on equines the winning percent has been fantastic at 34. Was in a $25,000 Claiming race at Aqueduct in the last race. That event had a class rating of 79 and she is moving down right here. A certain win candidate. Another way to judge class is earnings per start. This horse has the highest in the field. I think she'll be close at the finish line. MAGGIE - Saez rode this thoroughbred for the initial time last time out and comes right back in this race. You always have to be on the patrol for money generating rider/handler combos; we have it right here. She must like the track here. Shipped in to finish first on Jul 16th and she looks tough once again. Kirby brings her back again. I recommend you stay with this strong filly.

She shouldn't show signs of improvement and will probably suffer defeat in today's event running that number. VINTAGE - Unlikely that this animal will finish better than she did last time out when finishing sixth. This less than sharp equine ran a somewhat easily forgotten speed figure last time around the track. She shouldn't run much better and will probably lose in today's event running that fig.
