Jeff Siegel's What You Need to Know - Del Mar - 8/4/23

    August 4, 2023
“What You Need to Know” – Del Mar
by Jeff Siegel, 1stbet.com Handicapper & Analyst

Specifically designed for the rolling exotic player, Jeff Siegel’s Daily Santa Anita Handicapping Analysis, Wagering Strategies, and Workout Commentary identify those horses that should be included in daily doubles, pick-3s, pick-4s, pick-5s, and the pick-6.

    Grade Descriptions:
    Grade A=Highest degree of confidence
    Grade B=Solid Play.
    Grade C=Least preferred or pass
Grade X=probable winner but likely at odds too short to play

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
    RACE 1: Post: 4:00 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 1-She Is Romantic; Mysticism.
    Backups/Savers/Underneath: 6-Cailin Dana.

Forecast: She Is Romantic is a highly promising juvenile filly making her debut in this five furlong turf dash that she has a decent chance to win with a clean break from her rail post position. The daughter of Blame was impressive breezing a quarter mile in :21 1/5 at the OBS April Sale before bringing $550,000 through the ring, and her local drills for trainer Peter Eurton have been excellent as well. The barn doesn’t win often with debut runners but we’re hoping that at 6-1 on the morning line she proves to be the exception to the rule. Mysticism has trained fairly well for trainer Richard Mandella and, as a daughter of War Front, could prove to be a much better type on grass than dirt. She certainly has been given an aggressive series of workouts morning to be more than fit.

    *

    RACE 2: Post: 4:30 PT Grade: C+
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 7-Brookys Gal
    Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Brookys Gal has very little to beat in this maiden claiming state-bred sprint for juvenile fillies. She finished a distant second when facing straight maidens at Pleasanton in her debut last month in what was a fairly quick race for the level and appears well spotted in a maiden $50,000 affair while landing the cozy outside draw. In a race in which no viable alternative appears, let’s stick with the known element.

    *

    RACE 3: Post: 5:00 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 6-Sunrise Journey; 7-Table for Ten
    Backups/savers/Underneath: 8-Shot of a Lifetime.

Forecast: Sunrise Journey has the blinkers off angle that we like and remains protected in this starter’s allowance ($16,000) turf route for older horses. A winner in a similar affair sprinting on dirt at Los Alamitos in his most recent start, the old timer has 16 wins from 47 career starts, an admirable record to be sure for the quick son of Good Journey, who will be waiting around for nobody after the gate break. Effective on any surface but especially on grass, he’ll certainly be the controlling speed on the stretch out, and if he’s ever going to be successful at this one mile trip it’ll likely be in his first try. Table for Ten is the most dangerous of the closers and could be tough if the other speed types get worn out out chasing ‘Journey. He has a prior win over the local lawn and is fresh from a dirt track score at Pleasanton that earned a solid number.

    *

    RACE 4: Post: 5:30 PT Grade: X
Main ticket (in order of preference): 7-Yellow Brick; 1-Worcester
    Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: The winner logically will be one of two listed above, but both have failed at short prices in their careers – they are a combined zero-for-four at even money or less – so neither can be trustworthy. Yellow Brick removes blinkers for the first time, so maybe that will help. These conditions – a mile over the main track – suit him best, so perhaps it’s time for him to leave the maiden ranks. Worcester is in the same boat. He has figures that can win at this level but so far hasn’t been able to seal the deal despite having several reasonable chances.

    *

    RACE 5: Post: 6:00 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 5-Cornelia Fort; 9-Daddysruby
    Backups/Savers/Underneath: 10-Sensible Ruby.

Forecast: Cornelia Fort is protected in this first level allowance turf miler for state-bred fillies and mares in a sign of confidence after being claimed for $32,000 out of a game win on turf at this trip in mid-June at Santa Anita. The lightly raced daughter of Grazen has excellent tactical speed, improving speed figures, and room for further improvement for a low profile but high percentage outfit, so let’s put her on top and hope to get close to her morning line of 6-1. Daddysruby is unbeaten in two starts with numbers that fit and a pedigree that suggests she will enjoy this distance and surface. Both of her victories – an all-weather maiden sprint at Golden Gate Fields and $50,000 optional claimer at Santa Anita in March – were visually pleasing and accomplished from off the pace, so we’re expecting new pilot Juan Hernandez to employ patient tactics.

    *

    RACE 6: Post: 6:30 PT Grade: X
Main ticket (in order of preference): 4-Bus Buzz; 1-Kangaroo Court
    Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Bus Buzz renews his rivalry Kangaroo Court in this year’s edition of the Real Good Deal Sakes for California-bred 3-yeare-olds. ‘Buzz is down 0-2 in their head-to-head battles but fought bravely in both races and today could turn the tables based if nothing else on the luck of the draw. ‘Court is stuck on the rail where the lanes have been slowest but shows a healthier work pattern, while ‘Buzz, a recent six length allowance winner with a powerful speed figure, is more comfortably drawn in the four hole. You have to find room on your ticket for both in a virtual match race that might otherwise be best left alone.

    *

    RACE 7: Post: 7:00 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 4-Turn On the Jets; 2-Beer Can Man
    Backups/Savers/Underneath: 8-Noble Reflections.

Forecast: : This is a three-other-than turf sprint for older horses, but it might as well be a graded stakes. Turn On The Jets is perfect in two starts over this course and distance and may have been best when a troubled fourth, beaten a length, in his 2023 debut at Santa Anita in June. The Irish-bred gelding shows a steady and healthy work tab in the interim, switches to top grass rider Hector Berrios, and looks primed a ready for a career top effort. Beer Can Man is another Del Mar turf course specialist – he’s three-for-three – and is fresh from a career top victory in the Turf Sprint at Pimlico on Preakness day in May. On pure numbers, he’s right there with our top pick.

    *

    RACE 8: Post: 7:30 PT Grade: C+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 2-Tahoe Secrets; 7-The Bullion Bomber
    Backups/Savers/Underneath: 8-Quick Buck.

Forecast: Tahoe Secrets finished third as the 6/5 favorite in a starter allowance sprint at Los Alamitos in his 2023 debut and today drops into restricted (nw-2) $32,000 company while seeking his winning level. There’s an expectation that he’ll be a bit fitter and sharper after his comeback in late June, and if so he’ll have every chance to make amends. The Bullion Bomber, second in the same race ‘Secrets exits and runner-up in his last three, figures in the fray again, though he’s been proven to be suspect under pressure and may not be entirely trustworthy.

      __________________________________________________ ____________________________
      RACE 1: Post: 1:10 ET Grade: X
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 1a-Index Fund; 4-Wicked Again
      Backups/Savers/Underneath: 3-Ludwig.

Forecast: Index Fund displayed some promise when narrowly missing in his debut last November, but then had to be stopped on. The Good Magic colt returns as a first time Lasix user for trainer Chad Brown (superb stats with layoff runners) while displaying a steady and healthy series of workouts - View Video - to have him fit and ready. He’s coupled in the wagering with Opportunity Set but the 6/5 morning line price is strictly of his doing. Wicked Again earned a strong number when a distant fourth in his second career start last April at Keeneland and returns off a four month vacation for trainer Steve Asmussen as the one to fear most. The son of Gun Runner probably can’t beat a real good maiden, but it make take one to beat him.

      *

      RACE 2: Post: 1:44 ET Grade: C+
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 7-Cptbobstwentynine; 3-Glacial Power
      Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.
Forecast: This maiden juvenile sprint is restricted to horses that sold for a maximum $50,000 (or were bought back for that price or less) at auction last year. Usually, these maiden affairs are infinitely softer than races that do not contain such a restriction. Cptbobstwentynine has been training at Monmouth Park so we have no video, but he’s a first timer from the Todd Pletcher barn and therefore must be respected. The tab looks decent enough, and with Irad Ortiz, Jr., taking the call the son of Air Force Blue looks like a major player. Glacial Power overcame a slow start to finish willingly when fourth in his debut at Monmouth Park and with that effort behind him he certainly has a right to produce a forward move. We suggest you tread lightly in a “nothing would surprise us” event.

      *

      RACE 3: Post: 2:20 ET Grade: C+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 3-Bourbon’s Hope; 4-Zertz
      Backups/savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Bourbon’s Hope appears to have improved a bit of late and is realistically spotted in this open $10,000 claimer after just winning a restricted (nw-3) $14,000 seller at Belmont Park in late May. His numbers are okay, nothing great, but should make him competitive in this league. Zertz drops a notch and shortens from a mile at Belmont Park last month. He projects to be a late threat and has hit the board in 17 of 28 career starts, so he’s reasonably reliable when properly placed.

      *

      RACE 4: Post: 2:52 ET Grade: C
Main ticket (in order of preference): 7-Pinestrippizzo; 10-Berning Honor; 3-Lem Me Drink
      Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Pinstripepizzo drops into a maiden claimer for the first time and because she’s less exposed than most of the others we’ll put her on top in this inner turf router for $40,000. The daughter of City of Life isn’t much, but who in here is? Berning Honor is poorly drawn outside but is another that fits with these based on her best numbers. She needs to be held up early and produced late. Lem Me Drink is solid on numbers but already has had 11 chances and has finished in the frame only twice. She’s a one-paced grinder but in a soft field has a reasonable look.

      *

      RACE 5: Post: 3:26 ET Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 7-Patient Capital; 1-Perfect Day
      Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Patient Capital exits a series of tougher races and this class drop to the restricted (nw-3) $50,000 claiming level may prove to be a winning maneuver. The Michael Maker-trained gelding has run well over this main track in the past and projects to be comfortably placed on or near the lead throughout. He’s more than fast enough on pure numbers to beat this group. Perfect Day has a look if he can navigate a decent trip from his rail draw. He, too, shows up in a seller for the first time and has plenty of speed, so if he breaks with his field the son of Competitive Edge should have his chance. However based on speed figures, he’ll need a big forward move to worry ‘Capital.

      *

      RACE 6: Post: 4:00 ET Grade: C
Main ticket (in order of preference): 4-Happy Bob; 3-Assertive Attitude; 6-Run Diem Z
      Backups/Savers/Underneath: 2-Fast Boat to Skye.

Forecast: This bottom rung maiden claimer looks a bit treacherous, so we’ll spread the race but otherwise pass. Happy Bob has numbers that can win and drops from his claim price ($40,000) to $20,000, so if he passes the vet check he’ll be a strong threat in a weak affair. The Linda Rice barn is very aggressive with its claiming stock, so this class drop might not look as suspicious as it would for another stable. Assertive Attitude finished second in his debut in maiden special weight company at the Big A last November but then was turned out. He returns for a modest tag, not exactly a ringing endorsement, and will race with Lasix and as a first time gelding for a low percentage outfit. Who knows what he’ll do? Run Diem Z flashed speed before fading in his debut on turf at Belmont Park but has a right to be fitter and stronger today. Toss him in at 10-1 on the morning line.
      *

      RACE 7: Post: 4:34 ET Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 3-Elusive Princess; 9-Selenaia
      Backups/Savers/Underneath: 8-American Sonja.

Forecast: Elusive Princess finished an excellent second in the Prix Saint-Alary-G1 at Longchamp two races back and then was a respectable fifth of 15 in the French Oaks-G1. That form should be more than good enough to win this year’s edition of the Saratoga Oaks Invitational-G1 under fellow Frenchman Flavian Prat, who will give this talented filly the patient ride she requires. She’s listed at 7/2 on the morning line and seems just about right. Selenaia seeks her fourth straight win and is improving with every start, having most recently won the Honeymoon S.-G3 at Santa Anita with an impressive display of late speed. With another forward move today, the Irish-bred daughter of Sea the Moon should be quite competitive with our top pick.

      *

      RACE 8: Post: 5:10 ET Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 6-General Jim; 1-More Than Looks; 7-Nagirroc
      Backups/Savers/Underneath: 4-Ocean Vision.

Forecast: Let’s go with a price in this wide open renewal of the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame Stakes-G2 for 3-year-olds. General Jim returns to grass (he won over this course last year) and overall has excellent form on turf. Though he was far below his best form when unplaced in the Woody Stephens S.-G1 at Belmont Park last time out, the son of Into Mischief previously won the Pat Day Mile-G2 at Churchill Downs with a triple digit Beyer speed figure, so on his best day Shug’s colt can be very good. Regular pilot Luis Saez knows him well, and in a race that projects to have moderate early splits he could find himself in an ideal stalking position and be set to pull off a mild surprise. More Than Looks has rapidly improving form, and this son of More Than Ready could easily be this good with another forward move. He’s guaranteed a ground-saving trip from the rail and with some help up front could produce a dangerous late kick. Nagirroc has never finished off the board in eight career starts and should fire another big shot today. His numbers are just okay, but the son of Lea always must be respected.

      *

      RACE 9: Post: 5:44 ET Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 7-Timely Conquest; 5-Missing Fortune
      Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Timely Conquest was a nice debut state bred maiden winner in the mud at a big price at Belmont Park in mid-June. Today we’ll find out if she’s just a wet track specialist. The Mark Hennig-trained daughter of Accelerate has the proper style for this extended sprint distance, retains Johnny V., and figures to be running on strongly late. Missing Fortune was a runaway winner with a career top number at Finger Lakes in her most recent outing and if she can repeat that performances in the Big Leagues the daughter of Mission Impazible will be dangerous right back. However, that will be no easy task based on her previous form.

      *

      RACE 10: Post: 6:18 ET Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 11-Ignited; 1-Detroit City
      Backups/Savers/Underneath: 4-Foliage, 6-Deep Cover.

Forecast: Ignited is a Laurel Park invader with good recent form and speed figures that make him the one to beat in this restricted (nw-3) $35,000 claiming turf sprint. He’ll need to drop over and find a suitable spot in the second flight from his outside draw, but if he can the veteran son of Into Mischief looks capable of producing a winning late kick. At 6-1 on the morning line, he’s worth a bit of gamble. Detroit City makes his first start as a gelding, lands the good inside post, and exits a series of tougher allowance and listed stakes races. His form is a bit up and down but on his best day he’s right there with these.

      *

      RACE 11: Post: 6:52 ET Grade: B+
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 9-Unleash the Power
      Backups/savers: 2-Lord Flintshire; 6-Shinsun.

Forecast: Unleash the Power is a one-paced grinder trying a mini marathon trip for the first time and we suspect the son of Curlin will really enjoy the extra distance. In the frame with solid, consistent speed figures, the Al Stall, Jr.-trained gelding projects to be on or near the lead throughout in what very likely will be a slowly run race. At 3-1 on the morning line, we’ll make him a win play and the main punch in our various rolling exotics.

Al Cimaglia: Hoosier Park Late Pick 4 Analysis

        August 4, 2023 | By Al Cimaglia
Hoosier Park has a 14-race card to begin the weekend. The 0.50 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 11, and the sequence will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

        Race 11 (9:45 PM EST)

2-BB Lucky Boy (9/2)-Comes off a win versus easier at ScD, ships in for the 2nd start of this meet and should offer a square price. Has the gate speed to be forwardly placed and fits with this crew.
4-Creekside Johnny (7/2)-Likes this oval (19-5-5-3), and with this post draw should get an efficient trip. May have met a beatable field.
5-Western Era (4-1)-Will rely on the Erv Miller pupil coming back fresh after a few weeks off. Qualfier on 6-29 at HoP was fine and should be in the hunt if fires hot in the first start of the meet.

        Race 12 (10:06 PM EST)

3-Captain Sleeze (2-1)-Drops to a spot to shine and will be making the 3rd start of the meet. Oosting leans towards the Nelson Willis entry and it's best to respect the connections.

        Race 13 (10:27 PM EST)

4-Goldie's Legacy (3-1)-Lost all chance at the start last time with an equipment break. Now drops to a more comfortable level for success. Has won 15 of 57 at HoP and should be a main player if dialed on high and gets a clean trip.
8-Ultra Image (5/2)-Comes out of an odd race with a cavalry charge to the wire and finished 8th but lost by only 1.5 lengths. Left from the 9-hole and was 13 lengths back at the first call. Looked like he was locked on the left line a bit in last, will use thinking the Taylor George 4-year-old will be engaged when the wings fold.

        Race 14 (10:48 PM EST)

6-General Idea (5/2)-Comes off a nice win on 7-28 versus similar from this same post. Has won 2 of 4 here since shipping in from Ohio and is a logical play.
7-Dealer's Table (10-1)-Came first over into a quick last half and faded down the lane. Drops and should fit better with this crew and is worth a swing at the morning line price.

        0.50 Late Pick 4

Saratoga Pick 3 Ticket | Friday, Aug. 4

          August 4, 2023 | By Frank Carulli
          SARATOGA PICK 3
          Friday, Aug. 4

Saratoga will host a pair of crowded graded stakes this Friday, Aug. 4. Those who pick the winners of the Grade 3 Saratoga Oaks Invitational and Grade 2 National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame could stake their claim to a lucrative Pick 3 payout that concludes with a wide-open New York-bred allowance. Here’s a closer look:

SAR 7th race (4:34 EST) -- AMERICAN SONJA arrives from Ireland for the $400,000 Saratoga Oaks Invitational with an 8/3-2-1 record in an average field size of 12. She won of soft, good and yielding turf courses, beat the boys for her first victory and went wire-to-wire two starts ago for her first stakes triumph. She stalked but couldn’t reach the speedy Zarinsk in a Group 3 stakes last out, but she could hold a decided pace advantage in her first start beyond one mile after Zarinsk came back with a front-end, Group 2 victory. She is a must-use in the leadoff leg of the Pick 3 at 12-1 on the morning line. Another European-based filly, ELUSIVE PRINCESS, could be the one to beat at 1-3/16 miles if some pace flow develops. She finished full of run to get beat less than a length in back-to-back Group I grass routes in France before a slow pace and extremely wide trip spelled trouble in her latest start.

SAR 8th race (5:08 EST) -- MORE THAN LOOKS, GENERAL JIM and MYSTERIOUS KNIGHT are graded winners at one mile. APPRAISE, OCEAN VISION, NAGIRROC and BEHIND ENEMY LINES are graded-placed at the distance on turf. BAT FLIP won a minor stakes at one mile for Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher when last seen as a 2-year-old. CARL SPACKLER and MISCHIEVOUS ANGEL were impressive maiden-breakers on the lawn for four-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer Chad Brown, who excels with turf horses. That covers the 10 entrants in the Grade 2 National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame stakes. Or, in other words, the ‘ALL’ button.

SAR 9th race (5:44 EST) -- Finger Lakes invader MISSING FORTUNE should not be taken lightly. She has a win and two seconds in allowance company for this barn, met four next-out winners and five runners-up in those short sprints and ran a full second faster than a same-day AX allowance in earning her top speed figure with a 7-length romp last out. BIG BEAN CHRISTINE overcame wide trips to win three of her last five starts at Aqueduct and will look to continue her steady improvement off a four-month layoff at a distance which no one in the field has conquered.

          Suggested $1 Ticket
          SAR 7th Race: 3, 8
          SAR 8th Race: ALL
          SAR 9th Race: 3, 5
          Cost: $40

            Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

            Del Mar - Race #4
#1 Worcester He might be a trap horse at a short price with a handful of underneath shares to his credit with similar in the past, but he is also Grade III placed and is not meeting a deep field for the local level. Pace edge gives him the race edge.
#5 Excel Calculator He has been a touch more tactical in recent starts than he had been when facing this kind in the past, and I always like a rise to protect a runner off the claim. Capable alternative.
#7 Yellow Brick He's a lot like the top choice in that he has solid form but a bunch of underneath slices already, and he can be tough while getting back on the main track. Wouldn't be a surprise, but the top choice gets the race flow advantage.
Race Summary Worcester should be quick enough to be right up on the splits in a race without a ton of speed, and I'm not sure this field has a whole lot of depth once you get past Yellow Brick.
            Del Mar - Race #6
#7 Closeau He might get a pretty good run of things here while turning back, as he's still probably quick enough to keep the leaders in sight while they sort themselves out.
#1 Kangaroo Court Think he's the clear one to beat in here while getting back in with statebred friends, and I'm guessing he'll get back to his better stuff off the Grade III clunker on Derby Day.
#4 Bus Buzz He has been in range and threatened Kangaroo Court in a couple races earlier this year, but I think this one does his best work on the lead and might have some company there. Obviously in the mix with his best.
Race Summary Closeau might find the right kind of trip in a race where a few of the sharp players might want to mix things up a little bit early, and maybe a slightly more difficult pace could let him turn tables on the other two who beat him back in April.
            Del Mar - Race #7
#2 Beer Can Man His Pimlico score was pretty sharp, and he can be tough right back with this bunch if he's able to hold that form from a few months back. Think he'll be in the right spot turning for home.
#8 Noble Reflection He gets a good draw to force the issue early and has been pretty reliable on the turf outside of stakes company, and he might offer a better price than he did last time out.
#1 Whatmakessammyrun Finisher ran well on the drop last out behind Noble Reflection, and he might offer a playable price with the top pair likely to take some cash. Could see it.
Race Summary Beer Can Man is a great fit in here after last racing in a Preakness Day stakes score, and he should be fast enough to be right up on the splits in a race without a ton of committed early speed.

              Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

              Gulfstream Park - Race #2
#4 SAINT NO MORE (7-2) Ranged up on stakes winner in solid debut, good gate work for return.
              #2 PAPEETE (8-5) Chased next-out, stakes-placed winner in photo-finish setback first out.
#1 ESPERON (8-1) Steady works, difficult post, dam was 12-for-38 and a $238k earner.
Race Summary SAINT NO MORE broke alertly and was hard-ridden throughout in his 4-1/2F debut. He loomed 3-wide in a 4-way scramble for the lead at the top of the stretch but settled for second best behind pace setter Reaper, who won a stakes race at Prairie Meadows in his last start. Bet to win and place.
              Gulfstream Park - Race #4
#3 NO MORE DEBT (5-2) Slow to begin in both 7F starts, should graduate soon at this level.
#2 GRANTED SUCCESS (2-1) Sure to draw attention in debut for red-hot D’Angelo barn.
#1 COMMANDER BIZ (12-1) Brief 4-wide bid on turn off layoff, runs for cheapest tag yet.
Race Summary NO MORE DEBT was brushed at the break, 5-wide on the turn and even-paced in the stretch while chasing the winning favorite. He appears ready to break his maiden in his third go-round at this distance with an alert start. Bet to win and place.
              Gulfstream Park - Race #8
#1 URANIUM (7-2) Steady $100k GP earner met 5-1/2F rival who won for $12k at Monmouth Sunday.
#2 CHAPALU (4-5) Good speed going long after two years away, shortens up, the one to beat.
#6 HE’S IN CHARGE (4-1) Can be excused for latest, steps up in second start off the claim.
Race Summary URANIUM runs well fresh and returns to a proven distance as he looks to build on six-figure earnings at Gulfstream Park. He has a win and three seconds in his last four starts at 5-1/2F, finishing behind three winners who are a combined 19-79 with $420k in earnings. Bet to win and place and play a 1-2 exacta box.

                    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                    # 5 SUPER CURIOSO (ARG) 3/1
                    # 3 RARE JEWEL 6/1
                    # 4 MAJOR KING 8/5
SUPER CURIOSO (ARG) is my choice. Put up a quite good speed fig last time out. A solid 98 avg class figure may give this gelding a distinct class edge against this group of horses. This racer has a terrific win percent in dirt sprints. RARE JEWEL - Should be given consideration - I like the figs from the last contest. Vaunts strong speed figures on average overall when measured up against the rest of this field. MAJOR KING - Looks like a reliable candidate for the exotics. Overall, has one of the best earnings per start in dirt sprint contests in this lot.

                      Prairie Meadows - Race #9 - Post: 9:26pm - Maiden Special - 8.3 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $33,000 Class Rating: 68

                      Rating:

                      #3 RUNNINTHESTREETS (ML=2/1)

RUNNINTHESTREETS - This filly is in good condition, having run a nice race on Jul 10th, finishing second. This mount picks up a lot of cash per race around the track. I believe she can augment the lifetime total right here in this race.

Vulnerable Contenders: #5 MARSHSIDE MAMA (ML=3/1), #4 SUPER CINDY (ML=7/2), #1 HOT SUMMER DREAM (ML=4/1),

MARSHSIDE MAMA - This sustainer looks to have little chance without an early battle at the front. SUPER CINDY - Awfully hard to wager on this questionable contender when she hasn't been showing any indications of eagerness lately. HOT SUMMER DREAM - Common speed rating last time around the track at Prairie Meadows at 6 furlongs. Don't think this steed will improve too much in today's event.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - RUNNINTHESTREETS - The speed fig of 69 at 6 furlongs on June 24th and the rating of 70 in the last race are higher than today's class rating.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #3 RUNNINTHESTREETS to win if you can get at least 1/1 odds

Race 5 - Maiden Special Weight - 6.5f on the Dirt. Purse: $26500 Class Rating: 55

FOR ACCREDITED WEST VIRGINIA-BRED MAIDENS, FILLIES AND MARES THREE, FOUR, FIVE, AND SIX YEARS OLD. THREE YEAR OLDS, 120 LBS.; OLDER, 124 LBS.

                        RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                        # 5 SHEWEARSSTILETTOS 5/1
                        # 4 FAR MORE 5/2
                        # 6 XTENDED STREAK 9/2
SHEWEARSSTILETTOS is the strongest wager in this race. Is a contender - given the 53 speed figure from her most recent race. She has a good opportunity in this race as trainer, Brown, has sharp win rate with horses going this distance. Strong average Equibase Speed Figures in dirt sprint races make this racer a key contender. FAR MORE - Blinkers on may be the difference maker here. Has run solidly when racing a dirt sprint race. XTENDED STREAK - Lucas has her trained solidly to break quickly out of the starting gate. Recorded a solid speed figure in the last race. Can run another good one in this contest.

                          Colonial Downs - Race #4 - Post: 3:08pm - Maiden Special - 8.5 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $60,000 Class Rating: 69

                          Rating:

                          #10 YATTA (ML=5/2)

YATTA - Filly failed as the favorite in a Maiden Special race last time out. Was a good performance even though she finished second. You always have to be on the watch for revenue generating jock/trainer tandems; we have one right here. Handicappers took note of this filly in her maiden race at Delaware Park, sending her off at low odds. Look for a solid chance of improvement right here in this race.

                          Vulnerable Contenders: #4 THE MYTH (ML=3/1), #5 NO SHOW (ML=7/2), #1 ELOPER (ML=4/1),

THE MYTH - Should be difficult for this entrant to beat this group off of that last rating. Doubtful to improve enough to run a figure anywhere near today's class rating, so put her on the questionable contenders list. NO SHOW - Could be tough for this racer to beat this bunch off of that last speed rating. Doubtful to improve enough to run a figure close enough to today's Equibase class figure, so put her on the questionable challengers list. ELOPER - Don't believe this steed will do much running in today's race. That last speed rating was mediocre when compared with today's class rating.

GUEST COMMENTARY: The Brain - YATTA - Performance last out was dominant, even though it was second place effort. Was well clear of the 3rd place finisher. My data says only a slight improvement is needed today to move up one and into the winner's circle.
