5th race [Clm 12500, 1 mi] – (4) Goldini makes a significant drop in class which includes his win for $32,000 on the dirt three races back. He was claimed by Rudy Rodrigues at Aqueduct for $8,000, so the move down makes sense. (3) Higher Quality gets a pass for his last start in a Grade 3 at Monmouth Park when his prior two starts yielded a second and a win for claiming prices of $16,000 and $10,000. (5) Sprinklehead used his early speed to win twice in Kentucky for $20,000 and $10,000 when he was claimed. He is projected to be on the lead again. (7) Hammerin Aamer was a winner for $16,000 at Aqueduct in the winter and was claimed for $20,000 in May. The 9-year-old has 13 career victories.

              * - 4 or more betting notches if 11-1 or more.
1st race – (3) Poppy’s Joy debuts for D’Amato and seems set for a big effort. (9) Ellie Moore cannot be ignored in her U.S. debut. (2) Pacific Rose seems well-meant here. (8) Avoir is working sharply for her debut. Betting strategy: 3 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-3-8-9.
3rd race – (1) Bajan Bashert had some trouble when third last time. Should work out a winning trip from the rail. (6) Satoshi is worth a long look in her debut. (3) Hot Thirst Trap also merits attention in her debut. (10) Jessebear rallied fast for third. Betting strategy: 1 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-3-6-10.
5th race – (4) Nothing Like You debuts for Baffert and looks best in this spot. (7) Discrepancy has some interesting credentials and could be a main threat. (6) Girl of My Dreams put in a strong gate work for this. (5) Autumn Chill seems capable of a better try here. Betting strategy: 4 to win, place. Exacta box: 4-5-6-7..
7th race – (1) California Tiger missed by a nose last time and looks like the one to beat. (2) Mr. Disrespectful has plenty of speed and will be tough to catch. (9) Carol’s Comic belongs in the exotics. (4) Logon to Win was second in a claimer and could be competitive here. Betting strategy: 1 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-4-9. Doubles: 1-2-4-9 with 1-2-9-10.
8th race – (2) Don’t Ju Forget moves back to turf after a beneficial comeback race on dirt and should be able to handle this field. (9) Gritty Girl disappointed last time but can bounce back here. (10) Flame McGoon is working smartly after a freshening. (1) Queen of Pompeii could be a factor on her best try. Betting strategy: 2 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-9-10.

Jeremy Plonk: Mountaineer WV Derby Day Pick 4 Analysis

                August 6, 2023 | By Jeremy Plonk
Sunday night’s West Virginia Derby Day card at Mountaineer includes the Grade 3 West Virginia Governor’s Stakes among the late pick 4. I’ve got some highly narrowed opinions on the sequence for a focused ticket. First post is 5 pm ET and the featured pick 4 gets underway in Race 6 at 7:05 pm ET.

                Let’s get to work.

                Mountaineer | Race 6 | allowance

Outside pair look extremely strong here in #9 Williston Way (3-1 ML) and #10 My Buddy B (5-1 ML). Williston Way comes off back-to-back romping wins and jockey Luis Bautista is the meet’s top pilot in 6-furlong sprints in both wins (15) and win percentage (22%). My Buddy B is 5-for-7 lifetime sprinting, 3-for-4 at Mountaineer and hits a typically productive second-off-the-layoff spot in his form cycle.

                Mountaineer | Race 7 | Grade 3 West Virginia Governor’s Stakes

While the far outside is no picnic here at 1-1/16 miles on dirt, #12 Best Actor (6-1 ML) should be ready to romp in his second start at age 4. Dueled a 4-5 favorite into submission June 30 at Ellis and would up second-best at a tough 7-furlong trip off a break. Superb route form at age 3 for trainer Brad Cox, who is 12-29 shipping horses to Mountaineer over the years. The threat would be speedy #6 Buck Moon, who relished the tight turns at Fonner and could clear those inside him easily here and slingshot out of the clubhouse turn with confidence onto the backstretch.

Mountaineer | Race 8 | Grade 3 West Virginia Derby

The Derby sets up as fleet-footed #8 One in Vermillion (4-1 ML) on a catch-me-if-you-can mission and #3 Tapit’s Conquest (4-1 ML) the expected presser to make him sweat late. Really like the company lines Tapit’s Conquest exits that are better-than-they seem. Should get a great trip from a fantastic draw and give Cox a chance to sweep both stakes.

                Mountaineer | Race 9 | allowance

Play of the day is #5 Devil’s Red on the move to turf. Trainer Wallace Jenkins has a crazy 11-28 turf record at Mountaineer over the past 3 years, including a 13: 5-3-0 mark with those exiting dirt races like Devil’s Red. More than capable even if this race was to be washed off the turf and onto dirt. Single to close it out.

                The Tickets
                9,10 with 12,6 with 3,8 with 5 = $4 for $.50 play
9,10 with 12 with 3 with 5 for $1 additional tickets as the preferred play

                  __________________________________________________ ____________________________
                  RACE 1: Post: 2:00 PT Grade: B
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 9-Ellie Moore
                  Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: The opener is a five furlong grass sprint for juvenile fillies that attracted 10 entrants, eight of which are making their racing debuts. Ellie Moore is one of the two that has a prior outing, and it was a good one in April at The Curragh in Ireland, where she finished in a dead heat for second (beaten a neck after a very slow start) and was assigned a fairly decent (60) Timeform rating. Hopefully, she’ll leave with her field today and if so the Phil D’Amato-trained daughter of Starspangledbanner will be difficult to beat, unless there’s a real good one that we’re not aware of waiting in the weeds.

                  *

                  RACE 2: Post: 2:34 PT Grade: C+
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 8-Handr’sdream; 3-Jalen Journey
                  Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Handr’sdream plummets to the bottom and should be on or near the lead throughout in this extended sprint for $8,000 claiming older horses. A repeat of his highly rated win at Pleasanton two runs back beats this field, but the class drop from $20,000 to $8,000 clearly means he’s for sale. Jalen Journey is a New York shipper eligible for valuable ship-and-win money and at this level the veteran gelding must be respected. This will be his 39th career start (with 10 wins) and most of his best work have been done from off the pace, so at this extended sprint distance he should be heard from late.

                  *

                  RACE 3: Post: 3:07 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 5-Diamonds Danzing
                  Backups/savers/Underneath: 1-Bajan Bashert; 1-Jessebear.

Forecast: Diamonds Danzing was very well-meant in her local debut at Santa Anita in mid-June but fell short when second to next out winner Big Pond in a fast race for the level while finishing more than six lengths clear of the rest. A repeat of that effort today in this maiden special weight sprint for older fillies and mares should be more than good enough. Additionally, she was stakes placed in her previous start in New Mexico last November and is deserving of her morning line price of 9/5.

                  *

                  RACE 4: Post: 3:39 PT Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 4-Micro Share; Kuora
                  Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Micro Share earned a confidence building win at Pleasanton in late June and did so with a giant speed figure, by far a career top. Local workouts since that race have been excellent, so we’re expecting the Richard Mandella-trained filly to run at least as well today and perhaps even better. Always well regarded – she brought $450,000 at auction two years ago – the daughter of Upstart is the logical 8/5 morning line favorite. The one she should fear the most is the old pro from Peru, Kuora. She is seeking her third straight win while stretching out to a distance we know she can handle, so if our top pick fails to fire, this nine-time career winner may be able to extend her streak.

                  *

                  RACE 5: Post: 4:09 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 9-Greer My Dear; 4-Nothing Like You; 8-Cheeky Gal

                  Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Bob Baffert has a first time starter in this maiden juvenile sprint, so that is where we and just about everybody else will start. Nothing Like You, a $190,000 OBS April sale purchase, breezed a furlong in a quick :10 flat in a good looking drill that helped boost her purchase price. Her dam was a multi stakes winner and produced South of France, a stakes winner in New York, so the daughter of Malibu Moon has a right to be a decent type. That said, her local works have been solid but not overwhelming and our impression is that she rates no better than the second level of 2-year-olds in the barn. Cheeky Gal was a $135,000 purchase in that same OBS April sale, where she previewed in :10 flat. However, we don’t consider her to be a particularly quick type. Our actual preference in the field is the Richard Mandella-trained Greer My Dear, who has trained well enough to be plenty fit and ready for a winning effort in a race containing no world beaters. The daughter of Medaglia d’Oro has breezed like a straightforward, professional type, and from her good outside draw she can load last and hopefully break first under top speed rider Edwin Maldonado. She is listed at 6-1 on the morning line and against this group we believe she’s better than that.

Main ticket (in order of preference): 4-Took Charge; 9-Hot Box
                  Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Took Charge was a strong runner-up in a starter allowance $25,000 turf sprint at Santa Anita in his most recent start and returns in a $32,000 seller, a proper placement for the hard knocking Take Charge Indy gelding. He is a strong fit on numbers, looks on paper to be the quickest of the quick, and he should really like this five furlong trip. Hot Box is the other committed speed in the field but must leave cleanly from his outside 9-hole draw. He’s been chasing tougher without much success of late but has a right to improve against this group, though we wonder if his best days are behind him.

                  Backups/Savers/Underneath: 6-Driver’s Ed.

Forecast: Bigofromfeesno is a debuting gelding finally making it to the races at age four and is doing so while being protected in maiden special weight company when he just as well could have been entered at the bottom maiden claiming rung. A good sized son of Vronsky, the Dan Blacker-trained California-bred isn’t a quick sort but can turn it on late, and if doesn’t have too much to do from the quarter pole home he could easily outrun in morning line of 10-1. California Tiger was nosed out in a similar state-bred affair at Santa Anita in May in a much improved performance over his debut the previous month, and with a repeat of that effort today he will be tough to deny. A recent sharp five furlong drill over the Del Mar really caught the eye.

                  Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Don’t Ju Forget, in her second start off a layoff, was sharp when second at Los Alamitos at this level last month in a race that produced a career top speed figure. Always most effective around one turn, the Peter Miller trained filly gets ideal conditions to settle in the second flight and then kick home when given her cue. Flame McGoon has been away since December, but the barn has solid stats with layoff runners and this California-bred daughter of Stanford has trained well enough to be fit and ready. Her prior outing over this course and distance resulted in a fast finishing third, and if she runs back to that race from last year the Mark Glatt-trained filly should be capable of posing a serious threat in the final furlong.

                  Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Grand Slam Smile was a visually pleasing winner of the Fasig-Tipton Debutante Stakes in mid-June at Santa Anita after thoroughly impressing in her maiden win at Golden Gate Fields the previous month. She has trained in sharp style at her home base at Pleasanton while preparing for this year’s edition of the C.T.B.A Stakes so we suspect she’ll run as well if not even better today. The Smiling Tiger filly certainly is made of the right stuff. Pushiness won as expected in her debut, though there probably wasn’t a whole lot behind her. She’s always been well regarded and is the quickest of the quick. We’re expecting the winner will be one of these two, with preference on top to Grand Slam Smile.

                  Backups/savers: 2-Agency.

Forecast: Let’s take a flyer with Smart Mo at 8-1 on the morning line in this year’s renewal of the La Jolla Handicap. This will be just his third career start, and his first on grass, but as a son of Mo Town he really should like it. Drawn nicely inside in a race that projects to have easy early fractions, the John Shirreffs-trained colt is fast on numbers and continues to impress in the morning. The well-regarded sophomore could easily be this good, so let’s make him a win play and a strong push in the various rolling exotics.

                  Backups/savers: 9-Mt. Zeror; 12-The Key Is Unity.

Forecast: Hard Times vans down from Northern California after shaking off the rust when third in an abbreviated sprint against a bit tougher at Pleasanton. That race should tighten him up for this extend sprint, and against this group of bottom-rung ($20,000) maiden claimers the Andy Mathis-trained son of Goldencents appears to have found his friends. The addition of blinkers is another positive factor. Snap Daddy is a first time gelding and therefore eligible to leave his previous form behind. He takes a significant class drop from the maiden $50,000 ranks and has a closing style that should be effective at this seven furlong distance.

                    Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Weigh the Risks was scratched recently from an off-the-turf maiden event so she makes her debut today in this middle distance inner grass course affair for juvenile fillies. The daughter of Mendelssohn has done everything in the morning like a quality prospect - View Workout - and should be fit and ready for a major effort in this contentious affair that contains several nice prospects. The Chad Brown barn hits at a powerful 24% with first time starters, so with Irad Ortiz, Jr., taking the call and at 7/2 on the morning line she’s a strong win play and rolling exotic single.

                    Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.
Forecast: Ways and Means has been fairly impressive in her preparation leading up to her debut and this daughter of Practical Joke looks live and extremely well meant in her debut. She’s a quick actioned, athletic juvenile filly and really caught the eye in a recent training track breeze - View Workout - in which she came the final quarter mile on our watches in :23 4/5 without being asked. The Chad Brown-trained filly is a half-sister to stakes winners Highly Motivated and Surge Capacity and looks the part of a real good prospect. Bento is a first timer by Tapit from a graded stakes winning, graded stakes producing mare and was pleasing in a sharp local gate breeze - View Workout - last month. A $600,000 yearling purchase, the Mark Casse-trained filly should be fit enough to be competitive and definitely is worth including on your ticket. Managing Mischief has a nice gate breeze last week - View Workout that gave indication of some talent. From the first crop of the promising Into Mischief stallion Maximus Mischief, she’s a half-sister to the quick sprinter Static Fire and may be better than her morning line of 8-1 gives her credit for.

                    Backups/savers/Underneath: 2-Chromeplated Heart.

Forecast: Here’s a grass grab bag that requires considerable coverage in rolling exotic play. Shinfull makes a trainer change to Linda Rice and surfaces in a restricted (nw-3 turf sprint claimer for fillies and mares, so we’ll operate under the assumption that the New York-bred filly is set to produce a significant forward move. She’s run well over this course and distance in the past and switches to Jose Ortiz, positive factors that are reflected in her 3-1 morning line. She projects to be within striking range throughout and have her chance to tag the leaders close home. U Should Be Dancing is another dangerous class dropper that should improve against this level of competition. She generally prefers to finish second or third (9 times) rather than win (twice) but with some help up front she should make an impact in the final furlong. Miss Domina was overmatched when facing allowance foes last month but should go much better in this league. She has excellent previous form at the Spa and certainly has a right to be a player with this group.

Main ticket (in order of preference): 7-Ever Summer; 5-Myriskyaffair; 1-Frivole
                    Backups/Savers/Underneath:

Forecast: Ever Summer was tagged right near the wire when second at 21-1 in a Grade 3 stakes at the mini-marathon 11 furlong distance at Delaware Park last time in a career top performance. Previously, she won a first level allowance event at this trip at Belmont Park and clearly has established herself as a prototype marathoner. She returns to the allowance ranks and offers an attractive wager at 4-1 on the morning line. Her uncoupled Christophe Clement-trained stablemate b>Myriskyaffair has beaten ‘Summer in the past and based on her current consistent form has a solid chance to do it again. She’s especially dangerous on the front end and could take this field a very long way if not respected. Frivole won her U.S. debut at Churchill Downs in promising fashion but then was disappointing when flattening out to wind up seventh as the favorite in her most recent appearance at this level at Delaware Park. Perhaps the soft condition of the course can be blamed, so let’s give the Graham Motion-trained French-bred filly another chance.

                    Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Souper Catch finished a game second in a $10,000 seller over this track and distance last month and from his rail draw probably will be sent to establish the lead. He’s an admirable old timer with 17 career wins but his recent speed figures are just moderate. Maybe his winning spirit can carry him through. Sprinklehead may be a bit quicker than ‘Catch and if he can make the running he could get brave and never look back. A repeat of his race before last (or the one before that) could be good enough. Higher Quality was a voided claim for $16,000 two races back and completely overmatched in the Monmouth Cup-Ge3 (beaten 22 lengths) last time out. He has races that can win at this level, but his low percentage connections are hard to have confidence in.

                    Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Gypsy Tales missed by a nose in her debut at Ellis Park last month but earned a huge figure in defeat while winding up nine lengths clear of the third place finish. The Steve Asmussen-trained daughter of Munnings returns in four weeks showing three nice breezes over the Saratoga training track, so we’re expecting a similar performance if not better in this maiden juvenile sprint. It should take a pretty nice filly to beat her. Before You Go Go is bred to win right now (Mtole) and brought $310,000 at the Timonium May Sale after she impressed breezing a furlong in a swift :10 1/5. She also caught the eye in team gate drill last week - View Workout - and from her cozy outside draw could pop the gate and display dangerous early speed. Listed at 3-1 on the morning line, the Todd Pletcher-trained filly is a “must use” and the one to fear most.

                    Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Addressable Market< was beaten as the choice in a similar maiden $40,000 claiming turf router in mid-May, but she earned a career top number in her third career start and could produce another significant forward move after her nearly three month vacation. Her inside draw guarantees and second flight, ground saving trip, so in a soft affair we’ll prefer the Chad Brown-trained Irish-bred on top. It Wasn’t Me shows up in a seller after finishing a distant second in a maiden special weight affair at Horseshoe Indianapolis. On pure numbers, this is where she fits, and with just two starts on her resume the daughter of Blame has room to step forward. Get Respect stretches out in her second start off a layoff and is another trying maiden claimers for the first time. We like the blinkers off angle and suspect this Barclay Tagg-trained filly with employ gate to wire tactics.

                    Backups/Savers/Underneath: 4-Brightwork.

Forecast: This year’s renewal of the Adirondack S.-G3 for juvenile fillies may boil down to a pair of very impressive Ellis Park debut winners. Here U Come Again showed speed and class in her highly rated five furlong score last month, pressing the pace and then producing a strong second move when straightened for home to win with authority and with plenty left. Since arriving at the Spa, the Brad Cox-trained daughter of Liam’s Map has been impressive in the morning - View Workout - and should thoroughly enjoy this extended sprint distance. Copper Em left at nearly 16-1 in her debut at the Pea Patch in late June but blew away her rivals like an odds-on favorite. She also has looked very sharp in the a.m. since arriving at the Spa - View Workout - and actually may be a tad quicker than her chief rival. It may be significant, though, that Florent Geroux, who was aboard both fillies, opts for Here U Come Again.

                    Backups/Savers/Underneath: 4-Pentagon.

Forecast: Dontmesswithtess may have moved too soon when worn down close home in a similar starter allowance turf router at Belmont Park last month, but she certainly ran a winning race in defeat after finishing early seven lengths clear of the rest. The Michael Maker-trained mare will get plenty of cover from her inside draw, and with a well-timed ride should be a major player late. The only concern is her dependability; she has failed to deliver the last four times she was sent to the post as the favorite. Ruda is lightly raced with room to improve and with numbers that put her in the hunt. The Monmouth Park shipper should be running on strongly late.

                    *

Main ticket: (in order of preference): 8-Myles; 3-Forward Move; 2-Stow On the Wold
                    Backups/savers: none.

Forecast: Myles has improving numbers, and in just his fourth career start the Creative Cause gelding should be capable of stepping forward again in this maiden claiming turf router for New York-bred runners. Freshened since mid-May, the Christophe Clement-trained 4-year-old has good tactical speed to ensure a trouble-free trip, and while he’ll need improvement in the speed figure department we suspect he has more upside than the other main players. Forward Move finished a respectable third in his debut facing straight maidens but today drops in for a price, somewhat suspiciously so given that he was originally purchased for $225,000 as a yearling. Sounds like they’re giving up on him pretty quickly. Stow On the Wold is another showing up in a seller for the first time, but having finished off the board in four of his first five starts the class drop seems justified. On numbers, he’s right there with the rest of them.

Al Cimaglia: Northfield Park Late Pick 4 Analysis

                      August 6, 2023 | By Al Cimaglia
Northfield Park has a 15-race program with the $1.00 Late Pick 4 starting in Race 11. The sequence has a $10,000 guaranteed pool with a 14% takeout, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

                      Race 11

3-Elliot Moose (3-1)-Makes the 3rd start for Rhoades, gets post relief and this time comes back in sequence. Could be sitting on a big try.
4-Elver Hanover (4-1)-Was bet and was used a couple of times in the last win. Now steps-up but this field could be had and gets a positive driver change in Davis Jr.
7-The Longest Yard (8-1)-Drew off at Batavia versus Open I company. Ships back and lands in a competitive level and has cashed checks versus better. The post helps the price and has enough gate speed to get a decent seat off the gate.

                      Race 12

3-One Last Laugh (2-1)-Beat Open Handicap company here back in April and hasn't taken a picture since. Drops and was off 4 weeks between the last 2 starts and now comes back in sequence. Gets a positive driver change in Davis Jr and looks like a player.
4-Honali (12-1)-Ships in from the Meadows and previously was facing better here. Should fit and has hit the board in 5 of 8 at Nfld with 3 pictures. Willing to take a swing at the morning line price.
9-Lancaster Hill (6-1)-Starts from the 2nd tier but when good can pass horses down the lane. The #1 or #2 could leave, if Day can land in decent seat this veteran could get sucked around and use one nice move down the lane to surprise.

                      Race 13

2-Turbo Hill (9/5)-Takes a big step up after drawing off by 5 lengths in a 150.4 with the trainer between the pipes. The Krieser barn has posted 29% winners over the last 30 days and now Davis Jr is at the controls. Not loving the short price but could double up.
3-Moved Bythe Spirit (2-1)-Chris Page takes over for Wrenn Jr and the Burke trainee steps up a notch. Comes off a sharp win, should be racing near the top of the stack and could battle #2 to the wire.

                      Race 14

3-Favorite Aunt (7/2)-Here's another Burke entry and this mare has won 2 of 3, and 4 of 11 at Nfld. Could get a pocket ride behind the one below and trip out.
4-Fashion Chocolate (2-1)-Comes off a win versus this kind and showed some guts doing it. Davis Jr sticks, he should be out and rolling to land on the point. Could get the lead without burning much gas and might be tough to catch.

                      $1.00 Late Pick 4

                      3,4,7/3,4,9/2,3/3,4

                        The Lead:
It's true: Put the word 'Derby' in front of me and I'll bite. Sunday's West Virginia Derby puts second-half sophomores in the spotlight for a half-million dollars at Mountaineer. The 1-1/8 miles test will be Race 8 on a 9-race card that also features the Grade 3 West Virginia Governor's Stakes in the preceding heat. This 14-horse affair, which includes a pair of also-eligibles, boasts runners from no less than 8 different venues last time out. Let's hit the crossroads.

                        Field Depth:
LORD MILES is Grade 2 winner of the Wood Memorial and holds the field's signature score. RAISE CAIN is a Grade 3 winner. DREAMING OF KONA, ONE IN VERMILLION and RED ROUTE ONE are the field's listed stakes winners, the latter of which is Grade 1-placed. RED ROUTE ONE has kept the strongest company lines in the field, followed by RAISE CAIN and LORD MILES. Those 3 certainly have the class edge.

                        Pace:
DREAMING OF KONA should show early foot from the rail, but it's ONE IN VERMILLION who is the field's committed early speed. Wide-drawn WEST COAST COWBOY could be used harder early to avoid ground loss and contribute to what looks to be an average-to-modest pace for the class and distance. Deep closers will be against the race flow.

                        Our Eyes:
                        Here are my horse-by-horse notes.

1-DREAMING OF KONA: All 3 wins have come around 1 turn, and he's 0-for-3 around a pair of bends, much less never attempting a race this far. Lasix added will help, but 9F will stretch him.

2-LORD MILES: First Lasix for 59-1 Wood Memorial upsetter, who is sure to be an underlay price compared to his past form. Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. won this race last year with Skippylongstocking, whose form felt a bit stronger than this. Bullet workout at Gulfstream before heading north and drawn very well.

3-TAPIT'S CONQUEST: The Brad Cox barn is 12-29 shipping to Mountaineer, but winless in 4 bids in the West Virginia Derby. Good second to top-class Arabian Lion in Pimlico's Sir Barton on Preakness Day, a race much stronger than it looks on paper. Determined Ellis allowance winner vs. $450K Asmussen who is well-regarded in preparation for this.

4-RED ROUTE ONE: Deep closer is devoid of any early speed and will need some pace help to deliver. Preakness fourth was blasted in the Belmont by 33+ lengths and diverted here vs. Haskell or Jim Dandy ... not a confident sign. No trainer has more WV Derby wins than Steve Asmussen's 5, so he does know which horses fit here. Prefer others.

5-LOOKA LOOKA: Recent $4,000 claim is wildly placed over his head.

6-MY MAN BIGGIE: Stakes-placed in Arizona and Colorado, this is a tough spot for his longest and biggest career test.

7-TIMESATAPPIN: Six straight losses at Thistledown don't inspire confidence for Mahoning Valley maiden breaker.

8-ONE IN VERMILLION: Speedball showed his Arizona form to be genuine when finishing just 4-1/2 lengths back in the Santa Anita Derby and then winning the Laz Barrera at Santa Anita. Tough-luck DQ loser in hard-fought Iowa Derby isn't one to back down. They will have to run him down to win.

9-GROVELAND: Added Lasix in Hawthorne allowance win and returns with it in this stakes reappearance. Grade 3 Sam F. Davis runner-up hit the sidelines after poor showing in the Tampa Bay Derby. Should be legged up after training on the Tapeta at Turfway all summer.

10-FARTLEK: Bombed in 3 straight at the $4,000 claiming level and totally overmatched.

11-RAISE CAIN: Had worst trip of all to this eye in the Kentucky Derby when eighth, a sneaky-good effort. Came back for decent runs in the Matt Winn and Indiana Derby, but admittedly expected more from this Grade 3 Gotham winner. Stronger closing kick in shorter races, making it questionable if he'll deliver a knockout punch at this 9F trip.

12-WEST COAST COWBOY: Third in February's Grade 3 Holy Bull, he didn't show much in the Florida Derby or Iowa Derby since that time. Longer-shot of the Saffie Joseph uncoupled pair in this race compared to Lord Miles. Top Penn National jockey Tyler Conner is a curious rider assignment, and he's got a tough task from this post.

13-RUSSIAN HAMMER (AE): Maiden claiming graduate from Hawthorne being asked a lot.

14-KNOCKOUT GUY (AE): 20-race local maiden would be without any chance if he draws in.

                        Most Certain Exotics Contender:
TAPIT'S CONQUEST has a great draw, running style and recent company lines for success.

                        Best Longshot Exotics Contender:
GROVELAND should get a decent trip just behind the main speed and has only one poor race on his ledger.

                        Sending it in ($100 bankroll):
$60 win TAPIT'S CONQUEST. $40 daily double BEST ACTOR to TAPIT'S CONQUEST in a Race 7-8 stakes sweep for Brad Cox.

                          Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

                          Del Mar - Race #9
#3 Pushiness Nothing clever here for me, just guessing she's too fast and/or good for these right now off that debut run. I wouldn't argue too much with anyone standing against as the class and pace waters both get deeper today.
#6 Putt For Dough Think she has a real claim on this one, especially if a contested early pace leaves several of them in tough late in the lane. She's a logical alternative.
#1 Fly a Fantasy She might be just a little overlooked in here, but she might be able to work out a pretty cozy trip from the inside if a couple quicker fillies clear and cross her early. Think she's worth considering on the tickets, especially if you're standing against the chalk.
Race Summary Pushiness is likely favored here off a super sharp debut, and I think that sort of effort would probably handle these. Putt For Dough and Fly a Fantasy look like the most reasonable ones to use if the shorter price isn't for you today.
                          Del Mar - Race #10
#8 Zalamo He'll need better today than he showed last out, but he's probably sitting a touch better trip today if he can get away better and brings enough upside to jump in at a midrange price.
#5 Panic Alarm He seems well meant in here while making his North American debut, and I'm not sure this is the deepest Grade III you're ever going to see here. Bet he's a good fit.
#3 Maltese Falcon He hasn't been able to clear easier, but he stacks up nicely in here and just shared with stakes company last time out. Worry that the price will be a bit too short.
Race Summary Zalamo had a rough start in his local debut last time out, and I'm hoping a better break will put him in a spot to avoid closing from way downtown today. Price should be ok.
                          Del Mar - Race #11
#7 Hard Times He was a better fit when trying claimers for the first time last out, and now he runs second off the bench in what feels like another reasonable spot. Forward player can be tough today.
#9 Mt. Zeror He moved up on the dirt in that second trip to post, and he's probably close to the pace again here while taking another step down the claiming ladder. No surprises here.
#1 La'och Aloysius He has had plenty of chances and is tough to love too much on top, but he has occasionally shown a little chasing pace interest in these longer trips, so maybe he'll get a good break and hang around for a piece at a big number.
Race Summary Worth giving a look to #12 The Key Is Unity if you need to get through this leg, as he has some appealing enough finishing form while still having questions to answer on the drop. Think Hard Times can be a pretty tough presence in the finale with some upside today.
