Main ticket: (in order of preference): 2-Pink Ace
Backups/Savers/Underneath: 4-Song of Shadows.

Forecast: Pink Ace earned a strong speed figure when stakes placed in her second career start at Oaklawn Park in April, but is eligible to this modest starter’s allowance ($40,000) six furlong affair for having won (and claimed) for this price in her debut the previous month. She’s eligible to valuable ship-and-win money in her California debut and has trained like she’s fit and ready for new conditioner Phil D’Amato. A bargain basement ($5,000 yearling purchase, the daughter of Aikenite appears to have a good share of quality and should simply completely outclass this field at a price lower than her morning line of 9/5.

Forecast: There are three entrants eligible for the lucrative ship-and-win bonus in this maiden $32,000 claiming sprint for two year olds and seem certain to receive the bulk of the action. Des Doights had a less than ideal trip when fourth in his debut in a maiden $40,000 dash at Ellis Park in his debut in mid-June and arrives for trainer Wesley Ward with a solid series of local drills that should have him primed for a winning effort in a soft spot. He’s 8/5 on the morning line and looks it on paper. Nurkan didn’t show a whole lot facing tougher maiden special weight foes at Keeneland last spring but he’s a first time gelding breaking from a cozy outside post and could be a better type this time around. Nesso’s Lastharrah was outfooted and no factor facing straight maidens at Gulfstream Park in his debut last month but with that effort behind him and this cross country ship to face maiden claimers the son of Sharp Azteca seems likely to improve and be competitive.

RACE 3: Post: 3:00 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 10-Morning Addiction; 2-Pens Street; 1-Beachgrass
Backups/savers/Underneath: 8-Lucy L.

Forecast: Morning Addiction returned off a long layoff to obliterate a restricted (nw-2) $12,500 sprinting field at Pleasanton in late June and today drops to the bottom and stretces out to a mile in this $8,000 affair. Anything close to her best can win again, her outside draw notwithstanding, but she’s obviously for sale that indicates her connections believe her long term prospects are shaky. Pens Street closed a gap to be a non-threatening but decent third in a much tougher $16,000 seller over this track and distance last month. At this level – her lowest ever – her best could be good enough at 4-1 on the morning line. Beachgrass won a restricted $10,000 claimer at Pleasanton in good style last month and this drop in class to face open $8,000 foes is reasonable.

RACE 4: Post: 3:30 PT Grade: C+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 5-Impeachalot; 1-Gantry
Backups/Savers/Underneath: 4-Capital Outlay; 8-Buraq’s Reflection.

Forecast: Impeachalot has trained fairly well – not great, but okay – leading up to his debut and this California-bred son of Sir Prancealot finds a soft spot this five furlong turf dash in which the known element looks ordinary. The barn has average stats with first timers (below average with everything else), so at 7/2 on the morning line he may be difficult to feel confident about, but we’ll put him on top basically by default. Gantry, another son of Sir Prancealot, should receive substantial backing as well. The Ryan Hanson-trained colt has a couple of good gate works on his resume, and we suspect that if he breaks cleanly from the rail he’ll have a strong say in the outcome.

Backups/Savers/Underneath: 5-Star Prospect; 6-Post Facto.

Forecast: Northern California invader Dos Vicios looks well-placed to regain his winning form in this $25,000 claiming main track miler restricted to 3-year-olds. A respectable third in an optional ($50,000) claimer at Pleasanton, the Smart Bid gelding is dropping sharply in class but remains well above the $12,500 level that produced his last two wins, so this is where he belongs. He has good tactical speed that should ensure a trouble-free trip and he’s always has been genuine and consistent (three wins, three placings, from nine career starts). Also, his numbers say he’s a fit at this level on this circuit.

RACE 6: Post: 4:30 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 5-Please Focus; 6-Silent Sunday; 4-Rolling On.
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Please Focus is a quick turf sprinter taking a class drop to his proper level and will try to outrun this $50,000 claiming field restricted to 3-year-olds. Freshened since mid-June and a perfect one-for-one over this course, the Doug O’Neill-trained sophomore can deal with the early heat and then hold sway with his best effort. Silent Sunday makes his first start on grass – he’s bred for it – and has a right to produce a significant forward move. If he does, the Bay Area invader could make his presence felt late in a race that projects to have stronger than par early splits. Rolling On should be included in your ticket as well. He is a new arrival from Gulfstream Park, is eligible to ship-and-win money, and brings with him speed figures that can be dangerous at this level on this circuit.

RACE 7: Post: 5:00 PT Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 3-Stay and Scam; 8-Evelyn’s Girl
Backups/Savers/Underneath: 1-She’s Bulletproof.

Forecast: Stay and Scam is lightly raced with upside that most of the others don’t have. A debut winner at Indiana Horseshoe and then missing in a photo in a similar allowance turf dash at Santa Anita in mid-June, the Doug O’Neill-trained daughter of Square Eddie returns to the main track, has worked nicely in the interim, and should produce another forward move. She’s 5/2 on the morning line and will offer good wagering value at or near that price. Evelyn’s Girl doesn’t win very often but usually gets a piece of it. Now in the Gary Stute barn following a $20,000 claim, the daughter of Shaman’s Ghost returns for the same price in this Cal-bred optional claimer, has run well over this track in the past, and with some help up front could be heard from late.

RACE 8: Post: 5:30 PT Grade: C+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 8-Cane Creek Road; 5-Chasin Munny
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: The finale is a restricted $32,000 claimer over a mile that offers a volatile pace scenario that may greatly impact the race flow. Cane Creek Road is a dangerous class dropper but is a need-the-lead type and won’t be waiting around for anybody. If he can clear early without running off, he could take this field gate to wire. Chasin Munny is stretching out for the first time in his third start off the layoff. He is fast enough to impact the chances of Cane Creek Road, but is removing blinkers, so he may be held up early. The son of Munnings is unproven around two turns but if he’s ever going to get the trip it’ll most likely be in his first try. Tough race, play with caution.

Forecast: The Thursday opener appears to be one of the weaker maiden special weight juvenile turf sprints so far this season. We’ll focus on Permed, second in both of her previous starts, most recently with a fair to moderate performance when favored at Belmont Park last month. She adds blinkers for trainer Todd Pletcher and rates top billing by default, as the others with prior races don’t inspire the first timers don’t look like much.

Forecast: State bred maiden claiming older fillies and mares sprint six furlongs in today’s second race, another woefully weak affair in which nothing would surprise. Simply put, the race is inscrutable and is best left alone.

RACE 3: Post: 2:19 ET Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 2-Born a Gambler; 1-Tallahatchiebridge
Backups/savers/Underneath: 3-More Than Work.

Forecast: Born a Gambler takes a realistic class drop after finding starter allowance foes a bit out of his range in his first start following a clever score for restricted (nw-2) $50,000 two runs back at Belmont Park. His numbers have been solid and consistent, so at this level the Michael Maker-trained gelding should have his chance to regain his winning form. Tallahatchiebridge has been away since February and shows up in a seller for the first time, not normally considered to be a healthy pattern but acceptable from Saffie Joseph, Jr., who has excellent stats with layoff runners and is usually fairly aggressive when spotting his runners. “Win Rider” Tyler Gaffalione returns, another positive factor. From his rail draw the son of Will Take George looks like a serious player at 7/2 on the morning line.

RACE 4: Post: 2:52 ET Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): Dust Devil; 1-Two Thirty Five
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Dust Devil moves up a notch following a $20,000 claim by trainer John Toscano, who has been strong with this maneuver from limited opportunities. First or second in his last three starts including a clever score last month over this track and distance, the veteran Tapiture gelding has benefitted from a nicely spaced schedule that should have him ready for another strong effort, though at 6/5 on the morning line there’s little wagering value to be found. <>Two Thirty Five is another making his first start since being haltered (out of the same race Dust Devil exits) and should be a dangerous pace factor from his inside draw. The new trainer (Robert Klesaris) has solid stats with the first-off-the-claim angle, and it wouldn’t take much improvement from the Stay Thirsty gelding, who was fourth after cutting out the fractions last time out, to be a major player throughout.

Backups/Savers/Underneath: 8-Book of Wisdom.

Forecast: Miss d’Or Cherie smoked a quarter of a mile in 20 3/5 at the OBS April sale, the fastest for the distance at the entire sale. She’s done some very good work preparing for this race since arriving in New York and is clearly a filly with considerable promise. Drawn comfortably outside in this New York-bred juvenile sprint, the Christophe Clement-trained daughter of Bolt d’Oro looks extremely live at 7/2 on the morning line. Snarky is another first timer worth considering on your ticket. She was best of a team in a nice gate drill last month - see workout - and is certain to be a factor if she leaves cleanly from the rail.

RACE 6: Post: 4:00 ET Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 1-Walstib; 8-Khanate; 3-Le Dom Bro
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Restricted (must have sold or been bought back for $50,000 at auction) maiden 2-year-olds sprint six furlongs in this main track dash. Walstib is a first timer from the Ken McPeek barn with a decent series of drills that should have him have him ready in a race containing no apparent world beaters. A gate drill last month in :48 1/5 - see workout - while much the best of a team) really caught the eye but a subsequent scheduled start (July 20) never happened due to a late gate scratch, and he didn’t work back for 10 days. The son of Unified is one of several possibilities in an open fray. Khanate vans up from Monmouth Park, where he was prepared for this race with a series of useful drills that indicate at least some ability. The Todd Pletcher-trained colt lands Flavian Prat and looks to be player. Le Dom Bro has the benefit of a couple of prior runs in Florida, though he was disappointing in his last start (at even money) when a no excuse runner-up in a moderate affair. However, his speed figures are solid and make him a “must use” in rolling exotic play.

RACE 7: Post: 4:34 ET Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): -2-Olkovskha/1a-2-b-No Show Sammy Jo; 1-Idea Generation
Backups/Savers/Underneath: 3-Alpha Belle; 5-My Lion.

Forecast: Olkovskha was somewhat victimized by a lack of pace when sixth of 10 in her U.S. debut at Belmont Park last month. She had decent form last year in France, so with any kind of forward move the Graham Motion-trained import should be highly competitive in this moderate first level allowance affair restricted to 3-year-old fillies. Stable mate No Show Sammy adds strength to the entry following a pleasing maiden score in her second career start in late June. Numbers wise, she’s a fit with these and with plenty of room to improve the English-bred filly could easily prove to be the best of the lot. Idea Generation is a one-paced grinding type who was a bit exposed when a well-beaten second as the favorite in a similar allowance turf affair at Belmont Park last month in her first start since November. This nine furlong distance should be more to her liking, so we’ll give the Chad Brown-trained colt a reasonable look at 4-1 on the morning line.

Main ticket (in order of preference): 2-Magical Ways; 9-Pine Valley; 5-Moving Pictures
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Magical Ways plummets in class following a pair of disastrous runs in starter allowance company, so his current condition is questionable, but at this restricted (nw-2) $16,000 level the David Jacobson colt can wire the field at this extended sprint distance with a repeat of his third race back, a sharp maiden claiming score at the Big A last spring. Pine Valley is guaranteed an ideal trip from his comfortable outside draw and on his best day the Maclean’s Music gelding will be a major player while dropping to his lowest level ever. Moving Pictures returns to his claim level and is another that should improve with the class drop. He’s slower on numbers than our top pick but looks like the most dangerous of the late threats.

Forecast: There’s not much to work with here. Unleash the Power shows gradually rising speed figures and a decent runner-up effort in a similar starter allowance ($50,000) affair over the local lawn last month. The concern is his apparent lack of a winning punch, but the other main contenders appear to be in the same boat. Kingfish Stevens and Front Man, three-four finishers in the same race ‘Power exits, won’t need to improve much to step forward and win.

Forecast: Kasimba has finished second in all four career starts but may be ready to finally graduate after earning a career top speed figure when well clear of the rest in a turf sprint for maiden $40,000 at Belmont Park last month. The Kantharos gelding projects to be the quickest in the field and at this abbreviated sprint distance may be capable of sticking it out. Insanity It Seems won his only start at Monmouth a year ago July but had to give the purse back due to a bad test. The son of Tale of the Cat returns in a seller – not a sign of confidence – but trainer Wesley Ward hits at 25% with layoff runners so at this gelding’s stage of his career this is where the trainer thinks he belongs.

Hawthorne - Race #6

#1 Fuente Ovejuna	She didn't sustain a middle move in that Horseshoe Indianapolis stakes try last time out, but I can see her finding a good spot from the fence while tucked in behind a few pace players.
#9 She Can't Sing	Her better lines keep her in the mix here, but she couldn't take advantage of a tactical edge on the winner last out in that short field and will certainly need better today. Decent fit.
#8 Katie M'Lady	Nothing wrong with her overall form and consistency, but I think she might meet just enough other pace in here to make things a bit tough for her. Wouldn't surprise.
Race Summary	Fuente Ovejuna might have a little appeal at a midrange price with this group, as she held her own against some decent groups in the races on her page and might trip out from the inside.

Hawthorne - Race #7

#6 Go On Girl	She has to prove she can hang late at this level, but I think she gets a pretty favorable race flow on paper in here and might outrun her odds while in the mix throughout.
#5 Commissioner Gulch	She's the one to beat after a good first local effort at this level, but I'm not totally sold on her overall level of talent at this point. Underlay with a big chance.
#2 No Nap Needed	Fresh face has that working in her favor, and she has a couple snappy enough works on the page against the clock. Wouldn't have to be a star to share in what might not be the deepest local level.
Race Summary	Go On Girl should be an OK price in here with Commissioner Gulch likely to take some cash, and I'm hoping she can flash some pace and avoid taking too early a challenge.

Hawthorne - Race #8

#5 Real News	His comeback effort looked like one he can build on after moving a bit and going one-paced late, and he is not far removed from some form with tougher that would make him a real handful in here, just probably not at the 12/1 ML price.
#10 Smokin Richie	Dangerous guy gets the best of the pace draws to prompt the other speed players, but I'm worried it's still going to be a lot of work to hustle early from this post and hang around late.
#8 Land Mark Deal	Think he has a chance to land this if the pace really heats up, as he has shown some solid finishing form when going short on the turf. I would probably want him on the tickets in a race with a few pace players drawn inside waiting for Smokin Richie to join them.
Race Summary	Real News goes second off the bench after making a mild move, and his tactical ability should serve him well and allow his rider to place him in just behind the splits and let those guys go at it early.

DARK DAHLIA - Faced tougher last time out at Presque Isle Downs. Based on Equibase class ratings, this is a weaker bunch, so I will put this horse on my list of top contenders. I think this filly is ready to run a good one. She's had enough races since the vacation and should be fit. Have to like the early speed on this one. No one else may even be close. The Brain taught me this angle. Watch for equines that show good zip, drop back, then run evenly with a closing kick. LEMON CURRY - The fact that this filly is entered right back into a race so quickly means she's fit and ready. Ran a winning race Jul 31st, but just couldn't beat the victor. This filly is in fine condition. Finished second on July 31st. That 72 fig this filly registered in her last race tells me she's a major player this time. DREAM WARRIOR - Stanley was aboard this filly last out and was impressed enough to take the animal right back. Have to make this filly a serious competitor; she comes off a solid effort on July 25th. Bourke adds Lasix to this one today. I'd look for a significant improvement. Had a strong closing move last time out, running the last quarter in less than 25 seconds. A similar effort today, and it's straight to the winner's circle.

DANANG - Tough to pass on this gelding with Bermudez in the saddle. Recorded a strong speed rating in the last race. Can run another good one in this race. MR MANNING - He looks decent in this spot and I expect will be on the front end or close at the halfway point. Could provide positive gains based on formidable recent Speed Figures with an average of 70.
