RACE 1: Post: 3:30 PT Grade: B
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 2-Hudson River; 4-Lottery Pick
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Hudson River has never been big on winning (2-for-19) but he finished in the frame in his last two when facing claiming company and, after a two month vacation, returns protected in this starter’s allowance middle distance turf event. The Bob Baffert-trained gelding should inherit an ideal ground-saving, pace-stalking trip and then have every chance to seal the deal from the quarter pole home. Lottery Pick was a race shape aided runner-up when rallying with the help of a torrid pace to finishing second in a first level allowance affair over the local lawn last month. Today’s pace flow may not be so kind, but the son of American Freedom usually gives his best and should make his presence felt again in the final furlong.

RACE 2: Post: 4:00 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 9-Tiff With Jimmy; 4-Paid in Gold
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Tiff With Jimmy is nicely drawn outside and can dictate her trip in this maiden $50,000 claiming sprint for older fillies and mares. This will be her first start in a seller (a warranted class drop based on her figures) for trainer Mark Glatt, who makes the switch to top rider Juan Hernandez and also puts back on the blinkers that she wore in her debut. Paid in Gold is faster on pure numbers than our top pick and is strictly the one to beat, her low profile connections notwithstanding. She’s a first-off-the-claim play for trainer Sergio Morfin (moderate stats with this angle), and if the daughter of Ransom the Moon runs back to either one of her last two races she’ll probably win. Both should be included in rolling exotic play.

RACE 3: Post: 4:30 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 2-Idessia
Backups/savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Idessia has been knocking on the door and is overdue for a maiden win in this middle distance turf affair for fillies and mares. She’s been trouble-prone through most of her five race career but if she can leave cleanly and secure a second flight, ground-saving trip, the Phil D’Amato-trained daughter of Smiling Tiger should be able to produce the last run. Let’s make her a win play and rolling exotic single.

RACE 4: Post: 5:00 PT Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 3-Economical; 8-Touchdown Brown
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Economical looked good when easily disposing of a restricted (nw-2) $16,000 field last month and today moves up to the (nw-3) $20,000 level in a race that should be well within his capabilities. The Phil D’Amato-trained gelding has displayed steady improvement in his last three outings since joining this barn and another forward move is likely. Touchdown Brown is drawn comfortably outside and is the one to fear most. The Brian Koriner-trained son of Cairo Prince has back numbers that would bury this field, but those were earned a long time ago. This is his second start off a layoff, and the huge class drop makes his current condition difficult to assess.

RACE 5: Post: 5:30 PT Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 2-Harper’s Gallop; 3-Naughty Nadine
Backups/Savers/Underneath: 9-Shared Future.

Forecast: Harper’s Gallop was a clever winner at Santa Anita in June in a state-bred first level allowance event and returns to the $40,000 claiming ranks (a logical move) following a two month vacation. From her favorable 2-hole post, the veteran mare can secure her preferred pace-stalking trip and then have dead aim and every chance after straightening for home. Naughty Nadine tried conventional dirt for the first time at Pleasanton and hated it; she’s back on turf today and can be a strong factor throughout. She’s a fit on figures and is reunited with “win rider” A. Espinoza. We’ll try to get by in rolling exotic play using just these two.

RACE 6: Post: 6:00 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 6-Rookie Mistake; 5-Jamming Eddy
Backups/Savers/Underneath: 9-Boldness.

Forecast: Rookie Mistake drops from $32,000 to $16,000 while seeking his proper level and may have found it based on recent speed figures earned when facing considerably tougher foes. However, he’s just 3-for-29 overall and winless since 2020, but he’s won over this track in the past and could easily perk up against this group. Jamming Eddy, a fading seventh in the same race our top pick exits, is another that very likely will display improvement in this league. The veteran Square Eddie gelding has a good stalking style and will be double tough with a repeat of his winning race at Los Alamitos in early July.

RACE 7: Post: 6:30 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 6-Neige Blanche; 4-Queen Ofthe Temple
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Not only is Neige Blanche partial to the Del Mar turf course (two wins in four starts), she’s a prototype mini marathon specialist, having won three of four career outings over this unique 11 furlong distance. Successful in the Possibly Perfect Stakes at Santa Anita in June, she’s had a couple of months off but won this very same listed stakes two years using the same prep race. With a sharp series of healthy workouts in the interim, the Leonard Powell-trained import looks primed to fire another winning shot. Queen Ofthe Temple was beaten a neck by our top pick in the Possibly Perfect and is the one she’ll have to worry about the most again. The Dan Blacker-trained mare has just two wins on her resume (compared with 10 seconds and thirds) whereas ‘Blanche has been victorious in 10 of 22 career outings, so if these two hook up again in the final furlong we have a pretty good idea which one will find a way to prevail.

Main ticket (in order of preference): 6-Midnight Fury; 5-U R Pressed; 10-Habeas.
Backups/Savers/Underneath:

Forecast: Midnight Fury takes a nosedive from straight maiden to the maiden $20,000 level while obviously being culled from the stable, but if he can pass the vet during the morning exam he’ll be hard to beat based on anything close to his best race. U R Pressed has hit the board in his last three starts with gradually rising speed figures and will have a good chance to graduate if ‘Fury doesn’t make it the gate. Habeas is another sinking to the lowest maiden claiming level on this circuit and has credentials to make a run for it. He shows the route-to-sprint angle, has numbers that fit, and gets a bit of weight break with the switch to a seven pound bug boy.

RACE 1: Post: 1:00 ET Grade: B
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 8-White Chocolate; 6-Vivid Dreams
Backups/Savers/Underneath: 3-Corey and Quinn; 4-Crushed Ice.

Forecast: White Chocolate flashed good ability in her only prior outing last December at Fair Ground when finishing third after a pace-pressing trip in a race that earned a decent speed figure. She returns with a healthy series of good workouts that should have her plenty fit for a winning effort off the bench, and from her cozy outside draw the daughter of City of Light should have every chance to pop the gate and pick a comfortable stalking position. Vivid Dreams was nosed out in a similar maiden sprint for older fillies and mares at Monmouth Park last month while finishing five lengths clear of the rest in what was her first outing since her debut the previous November. She attracts Irad Ortiz, Jr., so the Todd Pletcher-trained daughter of Arrogate seems sure to receive a ton of play on the tote.

Forecast: We’ll go three deep but with a very low degree of confidence in the second race, a low level ($14,000) restricted (nw-3) claiming sprint for fillies and mares. T Max, claimed for $30,000 at Ellis Park off a poor run at Ellis Park in mid-June, returns on the drop for trainer Linda Rice, as so many of her recent claims seem to do with the huge purses such as they are. The vets will go over her with a fine tooth comb in the morning, so there’s no guarantee she’ll make the race, but if she does, the daughter of Connect obviously is good enough to win at this level. However, at even money on the morning line, she offers no value. Her Linda Rice stablemate Luna Loca is in the same boat. Claimed for $40,000 two races back at Belmont Park and now entered at the bottom, the daughter of Malibu Moon was last of seven, beaten more than 21 lengths, at Belmont Park in early July and returns six weeks later as damaged goods, or so it appears. This is the kind of pattern that raises red flags with the state vet, so who knows if she actually makes it to the post? Accel Rose is fresh from a win at Monmouth Park, so while she may be on the slowish side, at least her pattern in healthy. The daughter of Accelerate earned a career top speed figure in that win so at 6-1 on the morning line should be included somewhere on your ticket for protection.

Main ticket (in order of preference): 5-Dontmesswithtess; 4-Miss San Gabriel

Forecast: This race was handicapped for turf only. We’ll pass if the race is moved to the main track. Dontmesswithtess may have moved a tad early when striking the front but then getting worn down late in a runner-up effort vs. similar at Belmont Park last month. With Irad Ortiz, Jr. staying aboard, the daughter of Creative Cause should be capable of producing the last run in this inner turf miler for starters allowance fillies and mares. Miss San Gabriel, first off a $50,000 claim by George Weaver and protected today, is a major player seeking her third straight win and a “must use.” The sophomore daughter of Temple City has rising speed figures with a likelihood of another forward move and most likely will employ the same gate-to-wire tactics that produced her two recent tallies. The projected pace flow looks favorable to her. Both should be included in rolling exotic play.

RACE 4: Post: 2:39 ET Grade: B+

Backups/Savers/Underneath: 4-Stunningly.

Forecast: Rhiannon brought $550,00 at the 2020 Keeneland yearling sales and finally makes it to the races in this main track miler for maiden special weight fillies and mares. By Medaglia d’Oro from graded stakes winner Auntie Joy, the Chad Brown-trained filly has done everything in the morning like a high quality prospect and has been given a foundation that should have her plenty fit and ready for a winning performance first crack out of the box. There doesn’t appear to be a ton of speed signed on, so with an alert break it wouldn’t be surprising to see he on or near the lead from the get-go. This is a better than par race for the level, so the task won’t be easy, but she’ll offer a reasonable gamble at her morning line of 9/2.

RACE 5: Post: 3:12 ET Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 7-Nobel; 5-Royal Spirit; 6-Catch That Party
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: This race was handicapped for turf only. We’ll pass if the race is moved to the main track. Nobel arrives fresh off the plane for new trainer Brendan Walsh in this entry level allowance middle distance turf affair and brings a resume from England that makes him a fit at this level on this circuit. He’s won on both grass and all weather overseas and has solid Timeform Ratings, but the concern is that his best races have come when he’s established the running and there’s no guarantee that he’ll be able to secure his preferred trip against this group. Royal Spirit has good, consistent recent form and projects to enjoy an ideal pace stalking trip. The son of Into Mischief shows a prior win over the local lawn and a nice recent breeze to tick him over following a runner-up effort in an off-the-turfer last month. Catch the Party produced a non-effort when far back in the same off-the-grass race that ‘Spirit exits but his turf form is strong and makes him a solid contender with anything close to his best race.

RACE 6: Post: 3:46 ET Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 3-Dancing Mischief; 1-Frozen Four.
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: This race was handicapped for turf only. We’ll pass if the race is moved to the main track. Dancing Mischief and Frozen Four finished two-three in a similar state-bred maiden router over this course and distance earlier this month and are the main players in this modest affair. ‘Mischief ran the better of the two but had the benefit of a prior run, while ‘Four was making his debut and therefore might have a bit more room for improvement. They’re tough to separate, so we’ll include both in our rolling exotics.

RACE 7: Post: 4:20 ET Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): Red Run; 5-Costa Terra
Backups/Savers/Underneath: 4-Speed Bias.

Forecast: Red Run faced considerably tougher competition in his last two starts, most recently finishing fourth in the Suburban S.-G2 last month and before that winding up third in the Brooklyn S.-G2. This drop to the two-other-than level could allow this Gun Runner colt to regain his winning form, though his overall record of 2-for-17 makes him a somewhat undependable. Costa Terra earned a career top speed figure when missing by a neck and finishing 11 lengths clear of the rest in an off-the-turf race here earlier this month. A repeat of that effort in this 9.5 furlong main track event makes him the one to fear most.

Backups/Savers/Underneath: 9-Fandom.

Forecast: This race was handicapped for turf only. We’ll pass if the race is moved to the main track. No Nay Mets demolished his outclassed foes in the Tyro Stakes at Monmouth Park last month and anything close to that performance will make him hard to beat. The George Weaver-trained colt is the logical favorite at 7/5 on the morning line, though he’ll probably have to work a little harder during the early stages of this race after enjoying a soft pace-setting trip last time out. Despite not offering much in the way of wagering value, we’ll give him the main push in rolling exotic play.

Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Prisoner vans in from Monmouth Park where he recorded a career top speed figure in a four length score in a second level allowance sprint last month. Based on his numbers, he’s a strong fit at this $50,000 claiming level on this circuit, and with the versatility to win on the front end or from a second flight, stalking position, the son of Violence should be ready for another winning effort. At 7/2 on the morning line, he offers value in the win pool and in the various rolling exotics.

Forecast: Rally Squirrel was shrewdly claimed by Tom Amoss for a meager $10,000 out of a 10-length main track romp at Ellis Park in mid-June, and this raise to the allowance ranks in his first start for his new connections following a two month layoff is a clear sign of confidence. Based on speed figures, he absolutely belongs at this level, which carries a massive $95,000 purse. With two prior wins on grass, the son of Mshawish should be capable of reproducing his best on this surface, but if the race is switched to the main track, all the better. At 5/2 on the morning line, he’s a win play and rolling exotic single.

Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

Yonkers Raceway has a 12-race card to begin the weekend. The feature goes in Race 7, a Pop-Up Fillies and Mares Final with a $40,000 purse. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 9, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 9

2-Uptown Hanover (5/2)-Steps up after a nice rally on 8-4, Brennan will be in the bike again and has won 7 of 34 at Yonkers. The Cullipher trainee can be in the mix tonight. Might be able to get the top and not look back.
6-McMarkle Sparkle (9/2)-Ships back from M1 and lands in the same condition as its last win here on 7-14. Fits well at this level, could be overlooked and like the one above should be heard from with a good steer.

Race 10

1-Saranac Blue Chip (2-1)-Not liking the short price but should be a player versus this kind. This will be the 3rd start off a judge's scratch and best to not overlook.
4-Caughtinalandslide (3-1)-Faces better after rallying with a .56 back half to take a picture. Team Stratton trainee has been camera shy but will look for the upswing to continue.

Race 11

3-My Mind Is Madeup (4-1)-Came 2nd to the one below and could get a pocket trip again. Looks like the main player to snap the chalks 3 race win streak.
5-Toatsmygoats (9/5)-Has been handling this kind rather easily in the past 3 starts and left from post 7 in the last two. Likes to get on the point and play catch me if you can. Starts from a better post here and there is no reason to change a successful plan.

Race 12

1-Louie The Horse N (5-1)-The entire field has taken 14 pictures this year and Louis has one of them. Relying on being overlooked at the windows and the post draw making a significant difference. In the last 12 starts has never drawn the rail and had the 6-hole or worse 8 times.
3-Desire's Captain (20-1)-Has cashed checks versus $20k claimers and appears able to compete here. Looking for Stratton to work a cozy trip and have the veteran close to the leaders turning for the wire.
4-Macheasy A (9/2)-This 10-year-old still has good speed, and the Harmon barn is posting 21% winners over the past 30 days. Will look to fade the programs chalks #2 and #5 and hope to catch a price.

Baytown Chatterbox’s 60-1 upset in last weekend’s Ellis Park Juvenile Stakes stumped Pick 5 players and triggered a $92,036 carry-over pool for the 50-cent wager this Friday, Aug. 18. But don’t think the sequence will be any easier to solve, with or without another 60-1 winner. Three of the five races drew full, 12-horse fields and another is set to go with 11 starters. Here’s a closer look and a suggested $72 play:

ElP 5th race (2:45 EST) -- MATURITY DATE’s multiple graded stakes-winning sire never raced on turf and her dam was outrun in her lone start on the grass. But trainer Chad Brown’s 21-for-87 record with debut 2-year-old fillies going a route of ground on turf the last three years takes precedent. FANCY LOOKER, even-paced from post 10 in a debut sprint, can use that experience to her advantage in a field with five first-time starters. Her graded stakes-winning dam had seven wire-to-wire victories in 10 starts on the lawn.

ElP 6th race (3:18 EST) -- CHARLOTTE’S APPROVAL, a $1 million sales purchase, shows three :47-and-change gate workouts over the track for her debut. Her dam, Curlin’s Approval, was 9-21, a $654k earner and a Grade II winner at this distance. Trainer Vickie Oliver seeks her fourth MSW winner at Ellis Park in the last 30 days with FLOORED, whose solid work tab at Keeneland mirrors that of the other three winners.

ElP 7th race (3:50 EST) -- SOLID COUNTRY GOLD rallied 4-wide in a pair of shorter grass allowances that produced two winners and six runners-up before he tackled the 1-1/4-mile distance last out. He waited for room at the quarter pole, found it while the top pair were in full flight and finished willingly for third. The margin was a bit deceiving because the favorite was carried out very wide by the runner-up; however, Alglophile, the 2-1 winner, came back to just miss in a blanket finish in a $200k turf stakes. Let’s make SOLID COUNTRY GOLD a solo play in the Pick 5.

ElP 8th race (4:22 EST) -- PUMPKIN SCONE and EVERGRANDE showed good speed and ran second, while SPELTERINI rallied for a pair of runner-up finishes in their most recent starts on the main track. All three hail from top barns and get a spot on the ticket. GATHER went a full second faster than all but three of the 41 horses who worked 4F July 28 at Keeneland, earning the final spot in this MSW sprint.

ElP 9th race (4:55 EST) -- The 12 entrants in the body of this $16,000 maiden claiming route are a combined 35/0-3-1 on turf. Taking little to chance and going nine-deep in the final leg.

FANCY LOOKER - Have to like the early speed on this one. No one else may even be close. Last time out on the sod, this animal was solid. Anything close today, and this one should win. I like the case that this filly's last speed fig, 70, is tops in this bunch. She has the uppermost earnings per start. Take a long look at this thoroughbred. YOU'RE KITTEN ME - Hernandez was aboard this filly last out and was impressed enough to take the horse right back. In this race here, this horse has garnered the highest speed rating at the distance, so I have to give her the edge. Came home fast last time around the track at Ellis Park. That type of move bodes well for her chances right here in this race. Finished out of the top three last out at Ellis Park, but was within 5 lengths of the winner. Opening at 5/1 makes me think she's got a chance.

Vulnerable Contenders: #2 MATURITY DATE (ML=5/2), #10 WINSOME BEAUTY (ML=9/2), #11 SISTINA CHAPEL (ML=8/1),

A sign of a thoroughbred coming into top form. A pony coming back this soon after a solid outing is a good omen. KLAYTON'S KANDY - This mare is in excellent physical condition right now. Ended up first last out and comes back promptly. Mare shipped to this track and won; now goes for two in a row. Lead horse at every call in last race at Penn National. Decent chance to repeat that effort right here. This mare might as well call Penn National home. Don't overlook how she races well over this racing venue.

I expect a competitive performance from this animal whose trainer has one of the strongest return on investment percentages with horses running at this distance and surface. BONGINO - Must be given a shot - I like the figs from the last outing. He has earned formidable figures under today's conditions and should fare well against this group. BENLION - Is worth a close look and may be a bet - strong Speed Figures (79 average) at today's distance and surface lately.
