Forecast: Dont Fight the Fed lost a winning purse when disqualified out of a nose victory in a similar Cal-bred main track miler last month but a repeat of effort today should earn him a diploma from his favorable inside draw. The son of Nyquist improved his speed figure considerably following his sprint debut at Santa Anita in June (a non-threatening fourth place effort) and with another forward move today he should be tough to deny. Ship and Scam, third in the same race ‘Fed exits, has a reasonable look again, though as a 12 race maiden there is far less room for improvement than what our top pick offers.

Main ticket: (in order of preference): 9-Sing a Happy Song; 4-Diamond Bar Gal
Backups/Savers/Underneath: 7-Perkins.

Forecast: Wearing blinkers, Sing a Happy Song breezed from the gate sans company - see workout - in a sizzling :58 2/5 late last month, doing so without undue pressure while looking fit and ready for a major effort first crack out of the box. The daughter of Stanford has no grass pedigree to speak of and must leave from the far outside post, but if the Kristin Mulhall-trained sophomore runs like she works she should be able to graduate from this moderate state-bred group of fillies and mares. Diamond Bar Gal finished fourth without mishap in her debut over this course and distance and has a right to produce a forward move. She may be a bit one-paced but with a race under her belt the daughter of Vronsky rates a reasonable look.

RACE 3: Post: 3:03 PT Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 3-Thirty Four Coupe; 2-Big Hat Willie
Backups/savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Thirty Four Coupe seems pretty solid in this starter allowance main track miler for older horses. Fresh from a career top effort over this track and distance when fourth in a similar event last month, the son of Run Away and Hide shows a steady, healthy work tab in the interim and really won’t have to improve much to beat this field. With the switch to Juan Hernandez, he should be on or near the lead throughout. Big Hat Willie, fractious in the gate and then a close fifth in the same race our top pick exits, should be prominent throughout and have every chance from a stalking or pressing position.

Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: The fourth race is a contentious turf sprint for juveniles over five furlongs Andreadytorumble recorded a quick breeze (:10 flat) at the OBS April Sale and then brought $170,000 through the ring. A half-brother to the multiple stakes winning turf sprinting filly Lighthouse, the son of Street Boss has been burning up the main track for trainer Peter Miller in a series of fast gate works that should have him fit and ready. Eight Clap is a good moving first timer from the Jeff Mullins barn that brought $190,000 at the OBS March Sale, where he appeared a bit green but still breezed fairly well in 10 1/5 seconds. Out of a stakes winning mare, the son of Audible looks like a live item, though the barn has below average stats with debut runners. Stick Shift definitely has a “win early” work tab on his resume, and the Doug O’Neill-trained colt is bred for grass, though as is the case with all three of these, has never recorded a turf breeze, so we’re largely guessing.

RACE 5: Post: 4:05 PT Grade: C+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 5-Wishtheyallcouldbe; 7-Jasmine Chieftain; 1-Wrong Turn Cupid

Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Wishtheyallcouldbe was claimed for $20,000 in late July and returns at the bottom in a $8,000 seller for fillies and mares, not exactly the healthiest of patterns, She’s clearly good enough to win at this level if you assume that she has at least one good one left, but with 12 races on her resume through more than half of her five-year-old campaign, the daughter of Grazen offers a shaky proposition at 5/2 on the morning line. Jasmine Chieftain is winless in six prior starts over the Del Mar main track with just one third place finish but she may be the most dangerous of the closing types. Wrong Turn Cupid will display inside speed from the rail, but if the track’s inside lanes are deep as is often the case, her task won’t be easy.

RACE 6: Post: 4:35 PT Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): Derecho Dandy; 3-Beef Winslow
Backups/Savers/Underneath: 6-Giovinazzo.

Forecast: Derecho Dandy woke up when dropped to this restricted (nw-2) $32,000 last time out, missing by a neck while earning a career top speed figure. A similar effort today at this same condition over the same course and distance should be good enough. Beef Winslow shows the blinkers off angle that always catches our eye, and the son of Honor Code could wake up big time in this softer spot. He’s back with Juan Hernandez and could be dangerous if permitted to be the controlling speed.

Main ticket (in order of preference): 4-Pleasant
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Pleasant is fast on numbers and well placed to make amends for her close defeat in a similar first level allowance dash at Santa Anita in mid-June to Clearly Unhinged, who franked the form when winding up second in a photo in the Test Stakes-G1 at Saratoga in her next outing., The Bob Baffert-trained daughter of Munnings should be part of the pace throughout and a repeat of either one of her first two starts should be good enough to regain her winning form. A series of fast recent workouts over the local main track adds fuel to the fire. At 8/5 on the morning line she’s a win play and rolling exotic single.

Main ticket (in order of preference): 2-Glandford
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: The finale is a one mile maiden grass affair for juveniles that appears to be a far below average affair. None of the first timers have impressed in the morning and those that have raced aren’t very exciting, either. Glandford invades from England, where he finished second in a straightway six furlong sprint at Yarmouth (every chance, weakened late) while earning a decent Timeform Rating, one that makes him a major player in his first-off-the-plane start for Edward Freeman. He probably can’t beat a decent maiden over here, but that may not be one in the field. We’ll reluctantly use him as a single in a race that might be best left alone.

RACE 1: Post: 1:10 ET Grade: C
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 6-Alterina; 5-Cause I’m Elegant; 4-Strange Fruit
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: This maiden claiming main track miler for older distaffers is borderline inscrutable. We’ll go three-deep without any strong conviction. Alterina is less exposed than the other main players and therefore rates top billing. The Mark Hennig-trained daughter of Alternation finished a non-threatening sixth after a slow break sprinting on grass at Belmont Park in June in her debut and today takes a slight drop in class while switching to the main track, over which she is bred to move up on. She’s competitive on speed figures and is listed at 9/2 on the morning line, which seems reasonable. Cause I’m Elegant woke up with an improved effort when second by a neck against this group last time out, leaving her previous form far behind. If she can turn in two alike, she can be a threat right back. Strange Fruit finished fourth against similar bottom-rung foes here two weeks ago and today stretches out to a mile. She won’t need to improve much to at least get a piece of it.

RACE 2: Post: 1:44 ET Grade: B
Main ticket: (in order of preference): Detective Tom
Backups/Savers/Underneath: 7-Instamatic; 10-Patronage.

Forecast: Detective Tom has trained well enough to win at first asking in this modest state-bred maiden turf sprint for juveniles, and in a race begging to be won by a fresh face the son of The Factor seems like a logical top pick. A gate work on August 18 was visually pleasing in his first local move since vanning up from Belmont Park, so based on that one piece of video we’ll throw our support his way. At 3-1 on the morning line he’s a win play and strong push in the various rolling exotics.

RACE 3: Post: 2:20 ET Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 6-Kuramata; 3-Easter.
Backups/savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Kuramata has consistent recent form and should fire another big shot in this nine furlong grass affair for three-other-than allowance older horses. In the frame in his last four and most recent a game second (well clear of the rest) in a similar affair here last month, the Chad Brown-trained import is reunited with “win rider” Irad Ortiz, Jr. and projects to settle into a soft, second flight, stalking position and have every chance from the quarter pole home. His morning line of 3-1 seems about right. Easter, third in the same race our top pick exits, has won two of his last four starts and looks very much like the most dangerous of the closers.

RACE 4: Post: 2:52 ET Grade: C+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 6-Complete Agenda; 3-Classic Mark
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Complete Agenda has gone winless in his last six starts so this sharp drop in class to the $25,000 claiming level is warranted. He’s a one-paced grinder with numbers sufficient to win and with Javier Castellano remaining aboard we suspect he’s physically fine. However, at 9/5 on the morning line there’s really not much value to be found. Classic Mark is a fit on figures and is fresh from a nice tally in a starter’s allowance $50,000 affair over a wet track at Belmont Park in early July. It’s possible (maybe probable) that the off track moved him up, and this drop in class below his claim level would appear to indicate that his connections are of that thinking. Tread lightly here.

RACE 5: Post: 3:26 ET Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 3-Lady Arwen; 7-Mastery’s Secret
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Lady Arwen was a beaten choice in her debut when facing similar maiden special weight state-bred juvenile fillies last month, but a slow break provides for a legitimate excuse, so we’ll give her another chance in this seven furlong affair. The daughter of Audible moved up to press the issue but paid the price late and wound up a weakening fifth in a race that she had a right to need. With a clean start today, she’ll have no excuses. Mastery’s Secret is a first timer with a :47 2/5 gate breeze in early July at Belmont Park that indicates she may have some ability. She’s comfortably drawn outside and is worth tossing in on your ticket at 15-1 on the morning line.

RACE 6: Post: 4:00 ET Grade: C+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 5-Sousa Summer; 6-Senbel; 2-Artemus Citylimits
Backups/Savers/Underneath: 8-Into the Sunrise; 9-Fauci.

Forecast: Sosua Summer earned a career top speed figure when winning a first level allowance turf sprint over this course and distance last month and today moves up a notch in class for a repeat score that should be within his range. The Bill Mott-trained colt likes to settle in mid pack and then kick home, and probably will need to improve a bit to successfully handle the class hike with hiswinning pilot jumping off to ride Senbel, who was beaten a neck at this level in his most recent outing last month at Belmont Park and has numbers that are equal to or maybe slightly exceed what ‘Summer has earned. Artemus Citylimits has gone through a rough stretch in below standard performances while facing tougher stakes quality fields. Freshened since June and taking a realistic class drop, the Michael Maker-trained gelding is a perfect one-for-one over the Saratoga lawn and could regain his winning form at this level after a couple of months of R & R.

RACE 7: Post: 4:34 ET Grade: X
Main ticket (in order of preference): 1-Bustin Bay
Backups/Savers/Underneath: 6-Sweet Mystery.

Forecast: Bustin Bay has won half of her six starts on dirt at Saratoga and has never been sharper while seeking her fourth victory in his last five outings. The Linda Rice-trained mare lands the good rail and projects to be on or near the lead throughout in this state-bred, second level allowance optional claiming miler. She returns to her claim level (and logical move) and catches a favorable pace scenario, but at even money on the morning line probably will be too short of a price to play, other than as a no value rolling exotic single.

Main ticket (in order of preference): Vitaemi
Backups/Savers/Underneath: 7-Meravgilioso.

Forecast: Vitaemi goes from the rail to the outside in this $20,000 claiming sprint for fillies and mares and the better draw should allow the veteran mare to enjoy an ideal pace stalking/pressing trip. She paid the price when forced into a torrid pace last time out but can dictate the race flow today and employ stalk and pounce tactics, which should allow her to complete the deal.

RACE 9: Post: 5:44 ET Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 8-Technical Analysis; 2-Consumer Spending; 1-Jumbly
Backups/Savers/Underneath: 5-Surprisingly.

Forecast: Trainer Chad Brown will saddle four of the nine intended starters in this year’s edition of the Ballston Spa Stakes for fillies and mares, and a legitimate case could be made for each one. Technical Analysis, a seven time winner from 14 starts, was quite sharp in victory when winning the De La Rose Stakes earlier this month with a gate-to-wire trip but will be facing more speed today and likely will need to utilize stalk and pounce tactics. She’s won doing that in the past but is clearly most dangerous when she’s the controlling speed. Consumer Spending is a bit more versatile but isn’t as fast on numbers as ‘Analysis. She’ll need a career top performance today and could easily produce it. Jumbly is the wild card from England. A multiple stakes winner as a 3-year-old, she’s winless in two starts this year but may simply be rounding into form for trainer Joseph O’Brien and her Timeform Ratings are strong. You have to use her.

RACE 10: Post: 6:18 ET Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 5-War Officer; 9-Toofareastiswest; 8-Dr Kringle
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: War Officer was off slowly and hated the ground when debuting in an off-the-turf maiden miler here last month. The son of War Front (hopefully) gets his chance on grass this time and we’re expecting the Todd Pletcher-trained colt to step forward in a big way. Irad Ortiz, Jr., who took care of him after a poor start that cost him valuable position, rides him back. Today we’ll find out what he can do. Toofareastiswest has speed figures in four starts at this level that makes him a contender, though he’s a bit too much of a grinder to be trustworthy. His outside draw is no bargain, either, but he still projects as a reasonable contender, all things being considered. Dr Kringle switches to Flavian Prat and has numbers that fit, even though he is exiting a high priced maiden claimer.

Del Mar - Race #4

#3 Wild Recruit	Will be good to get a look at all of these on the track ahead of this, but I think this guy might be ready to roll at first asking in a race that maybe lacks star power in the main body.
#11 Slider	He showed good pace and stayed on well in the main-track debut here last month, and he'll have a perfect draw outside to prompt the other pace if he gets to race today. Dangerous if he goes.
#7 Andreadytorumble	Wouldn't be a surprise to see her land this first out for Miller, but I worry she's going to be overbet a bit based on reasonable risk/reward here. Admittedly tough read for me.
Race Summary	Wild Recruit debuts in a spot where all of them in the main body will be making their first start, and I think a mid-range price might be sitting on the board at post time here.

Del Mar - Race #7

#2 Essential Business	The dirt form on her page is actually pretty reliable, and the darker running lines have generally come on the turf. Could see her finding a nice trip while just outsprinted a bit early.
#4 Pleasant	She is pretty obvious with good form out of the Baffert barn, but she's got speed and meets a few others with similar forward running styles, and I wonder if that leaves her vulnerable again late today.
#1 Jensco	She moved up nicely when getting on the dirt here for the first time earlier this month, and there might still be some upside here on the main track. Possible.
Race Summary	Essential Business has some room to bounce back here after a flat run on the grass last out, and I think a spying kind of trip might work in her favor today at a nice price.

Del Mar - Race #8

#11 Masters Sunday	Think you could probably make a compelling enough case to talk me into any one of six or seven in this spot, but in the end I think this guy finds the right kind of spying trip to land it with any reasonable improvement in his second turf route.
#5 Bear River	He'll debut for a team that doesn't send out a lot of live wires in this kind of company, but I think he might be a reasonable enough inclusion if you're reaching for some longshots in this one.
#2 Glandford	He'll make his first North American start here with form that's a bit of a mixed bag, but his worst running line came against winners, and I'll bet he stacks up ok with these.
Race Summary	While not super high confidence, Masters Sunday probably isn't the worst lean if you've got to pare down a ticket, as he handled the trip nicely last time out and could find a surprisingly good race flow from a wide draw.

CALYPSO GHOST - Trainer Harting moves this one to a lower class rank to face a weaker class today. Look for a sharp race with this class drop. I usually like playing sprinters who are 3-4 races into a return to racing. This thoroughbred is at the top of my list of top contenders. Her speed, along with a favorable post on this tight track, should take her far in this one. HOLY DELITE - Widely used handicapping theory - 3rd or 4th start after a layoff generally leads to a big effort. Should run big today. Arias drops her down to this level. You don't need too much more from the horse's history to believe this animal will be one to beat at this level. This pace horse could take the lead quickly. My guess is she'll take a shot at moving to the front, and never looking back. FLAT DISCOUNT - This mare is in good physical condition, having run a nice race on August 12th, finishing second. Have to like the way Ginter has raced this mare back into shape off the layoff. Horse is well spotted in this sprint and I think she'll run well today.

SHES SO SPEIGHTSY - Not the right 'placement' in this race. CENTERFOLD ANGEL - Even though victorious in last, didn't finish the way you'd like to see when stepping up to face tougher competition.

Formidable average Equibase speed figs in dirt route races make this pony a key contender. WAR COURT - Looks decent versus this group of animals and will almost certainly be one of the front-runners. Recorded a strong Equibase Speed Figure in the last race. Can run another good one in this race. HADDASSAH - Garnered a formidable speed rating in the last race. Can run another good one in this contest. Can't overlook the connections here, a 21 winning percentage, one of the strongest at getting into the winner's circle.

VITAEMI - I think the shorter trip will help this mare stay the distance. Using this jock/trainer combination is a good decision. A campaigner coming back this promptly after a nice outing is a good sign. MERAVIGLIOSO - I like that last effort on Jul 27th at Saratoga where she finished second.
