    August 25, 2023
“What You Need to Know” – Del Mar
by Jeff Siegel, 1stbet.com Handicapper & Analyst

Specifically designed for the rolling exotic player, Jeff Siegel’s Daily Santa Anita Handicapping Analysis, Wagering Strategies, and Workout Commentary identify those horses that should be included in daily doubles, pick-3s, pick-4s, pick-5s, and the pick-6.

    Grade Descriptions:
    Grade A=Highest degree of confidence
    Grade B=Solid Play.
    Grade C=Least preferred or pass
Grade X=probable winner but likely at odds too short to play

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
    RACE 1: Post: 3:00 PT Grade: B
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 2-House of Magic; 6-Katerini
    Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: House of Magic shortens to five furlongs, switches to grass, and should be capable of outrunning this starter’s allowance field of fillies and mares. The daughter of Good Magic is solid on speed figures for this level, switches to leading pilot Juan Hernandez, lands a good inside draw, and catches a field that lacks dependable closing types. Katerini has been freshened for 10 weeks and shows the route-to-sprint angle, so we’re expecting her to make some headway late. She also gets a break in the weights, so if given the patient ride that might bring out her best, the Mark Glatt-trained mare must be considered a legitimate contender.

    *

    RACE 2: Post: 3:29 PT Grade: C+
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 2-Thirsty; 6-Too Much Info
    Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Thirsty won a maiden $50,000 state bred sprint at Santa Anita by almost eight lengths in his most recent start in late January but then disappeared. The Peter Miller-trained gelding returns cheap in this restricted (nw-2) $16,000 dash, not a healthy pattern to be sure, but if has one good one left he’ll most likely outrun this modest group of 3-year-olds. The work pattern at San Luis Rey Downs should have him fit enough. Too Much Info takes another class drop while seeking his proper level and may have found it. The Gary Stute-trained gelding is a one-paced grinder but he’s a trier and should at least get a piece of it. Tread lightly here.

    *

    RACE 3: Post: 3:59 PT Grade: C+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 3-Sushi Sticks; 1-Harney Lane; 10-Moment’s Pleasure
    Backups/savers/Underneath: 2-Kitzkaty; 4-Annie Fox.

Forecast: This grass grab bag for juvenile fillies over a mile on turf could be won by just about any of the 10 entrants, so best advice is to spread as deeply as your budget allows. Sushi Stick is bred strictly for grass (Karakontie) and has done some reasonably good work in the morning while preparing for her racing debut. The Michael McCarthy-trained filly lands top rider Juan Hernandez, will leave from a comfortable inside draw, and has been given enough of a foundation to be fit and ready in somewhat lackluster state-bred affair. Harney Lane is another bred for turf (Sir Prancealot) and has worked okay for trainer David Hofmans while landing the good rail. She certainly won’t have to be a world beater to be competitive first crack out of the box. Moment’s Pleasure had a debut run sprinting on dirt facing maiden $50,000 foes and didn’t do badly while finishing steadily to be fourth. She should like turf and she should handle the trip, so despite her far outside draw we’ll toss her in.

    *

    RACE 4: Post: 4:29 PT Grade: C+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 4-El Magnifico; 6-Ultra Power
    Backups/Savers/Underneath: 3-Wynstock.

Forecast: El Magnifico was no worry to Muth in his racing debut but did well to finish a distant second (beaten almost nine lengths) while well clear of the rest in a fast dash in mid-June at Santa Anita. The son of Street Sense faces a considerably easier task in this extended sprint for maiden juveniles, and with a race under his belt the Keith Desormeaux trained colt should step forward considerably. The first timers don’t really impress, though we get the feeling that Unique Bella’s first foal (by Curlin) Ultra Power will develop in due time and should be running on late. We’ll toss him on the main ticket.

    *

    RACE 5: Post: 4:59 PT Grade: C+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 1-She’s Got a Way; 4-Queenzy
    Backups/Savers/Underneath: 9-Albayaader.

Forecast: Here’s another borderline inscrutable turf sprint, this one for first level allowance fillies and mares. She’s Got a Way hasn’t been trustworthy, having failed to deliver as the favorite in three of her last four starts. However, on her best day, the daughter of Tonalist is right there with these. The Peter Eurton-trained 4-year old should settle in the second flight from her inside draw and then have every chance from the quarter pole home to tag the leaders. Maybe the rider switch to Antonio Fresu will make a difference. Queenzy has been away since last November but the works at San Luis Rey Downs should have her fit enough and it’s conceivable that the daughter of Classic Empire might be an improved type this time around. She’s a first time Lasix user and is switching to Juan Hernandez, two positive factors that make her a legitimate contender. These are the two we’ll prefer but we suggest you spread as deeply as you can afford to.

    *

    RACE 6: Post: 5:29 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 4-Havoc; 1-Diamond Concerto
    Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Havoc had an outing against straight maidens California-bred juveniles last month and under the circumstances didn’t do badly when winding up fifth of 10 behind Lord Prancealot, who returned to win the Graduation Stakes. This drop into the maiden $50,000 ranks looks like a proper move, so let’s go with the Ryan Hanson-trained gelding on top in a below average race for the level. Diamond Concerto a fair fifth after a slow break in his debut, certainly has a right to improve and can be within range throughout if he leaves cleanly from the rail.

    *

    RACE 7: Post: 5:59 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 3-Eddie’s New Dream; 1-Chancery Way
    Backups/Savers/Underneath: 4-Ultimate Hy; 8-Rose Maddox.

Forecast: Eddie’s New Dream is a tough-as-nails veteran mare who has finished first or second in four of six career starts over the Del Mar turf course. Nosed out in her last outing when facing open company, she returns to the state-bred stakes ranks today and can win this year’s edition of the Solana Beach Stakes with her best effort. Chancery Way has never been sharper, but it remains to be seen if she can perform as well routing ln grass as she has sprinting on dirt. She’ll try gate-to-wire tactics from the rail and if not pressured early could take this field a long way. Her two prior starts on grass (both sprints up north) were solid, so the surface shouldn’t be an issue.

    *

    RACE 8: Post: 6:29 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 3-Satellite Heart; 5-Big Rainbow.
    Backups/Savers/Underneath: 7-Cocktail Cutie.

Forecast: Satellite Heart makes her debut for trainer John Sadler in a weak maiden $50,000 claiming sprint for state-bred juvenile fillies and has trained well enough to be a major player at this level. She’s a bit of a tail-swisher but has shown the ability to finish a bit in her morning drills, so at 5-1 on the morning let’s give her top billing in a field that doesn’t offer many viable alternatives. Big Rainbow shows a pair of outings against much tougher straight maiden fields and should greatly appreciate this class drop. Look for her to be running on late.

      __________________________________________________ ____________________________
      RACE 1: Post: 1:10 ET Grade: B
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 7-Tireless; 5-Wally World; 8-Veracruzin
      Backups/Savers/Underneath: 4-Feltrinelli.

Forecast: This race has been handicapped for turf. If it is transferred to the main track, we will pass. Tireless brought $875,000 as a yearling, has looked the part in his recent preparation for trainer Todd Pletcher and should be plenty fit for a big effort in his debut. His pedigree is okay, nothing great, so the son of Not This Time he must be one impressive individual. He’s listed at 6-1 on the morning line and probably is better than that. Wally World was entered but scratched last week in an off-the-turfer, so we know he’s ready. The Chad Brown-trained son of More Than Ready hasn’t been asked for much in the a.m. but moves like a colt with talent. Veracruzin, a Summer Front colt, is another that has gone about his morning business in a proper way and should be ready for a strong effort as well., The Kenny McPeek-trained colt hails from a barn that has weak stats with first time starters, but this colt looks a cut above the norm.

      *

      RACE 2: Post: 1:44 ET Grade: C
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 3-Vax; 4-Our Rosie Diamonds
      Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: In typical Linda Rice style, Vax was claimed last time out for $40,000 and returns in a restricted (nw-2) $16,000 seller. The Sharp Azteca filly, a distant third last time out, figures to beat this field if healthy, but who really knows? Our Rosie Diamonds missed by a neck in a $25,000 affair last time out but didn’t earn much of a number. She’s 1-for-15 for a reason. These are the two we’ll be including in our rolling exotics in a race that probably should be left alone.

      *

      RACE 3: Post: 2:20 ET Grade: X
Main ticket (in order of preference): 5-Roses for Deb
      Backups/savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: This race has been handicapped for turf. If it is transferred to the main track, we will pass. Roses for Debra just won the Caress Stakes-G3 over this course and distance from a similar field and will be odds-on to extend her winning streak to four in this year’s edition of the Smart N Fancy Stakes for fillies and mares. She has an ideal second flight, stalking style and can really kick it in when given her cue. Successful in six of eight career starts, the daughter of Liam’s Map is listed on the morning line at 50 cents on the dollar and on paper looks it.

      *

      RACE 4: Post: 2:52 ET Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): Landbiscuit; 7-Speedy Hans
      Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: This race has been handicapped for turf. If it is transferred to the main track, we will pass. Landbiscuit has finished in the frame in her last six starts but recently hasn’t been able to seal the deal, having wound up second in her most recent three outings. The good news is that her numbers are rising, and we’ve never considered her to lack a winning punch, so let’s operate under the assumption that she’s just been a tad unlucky, and that her genuine and consistent recent form will be rewarded today. Speedy Hans moves up a notch for new trainer Carlos David after being haltered for $25,000 out of the same race our top pick exits. The barn has good stats with this angle, so a forward move is likely at 8-1 on the morning line.

      *

      RACE 5: Post: 3:26 ET Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 6-Joking Way; 1-Prove Right; 1-Heldish
      Backups/Savers/Underneath: 3-Alternate Reality.

Forecast: This is a challenging extended sprint for older $50,000 claimers that requires coverage in rolling exotic play. Joking Way, acquired by Linda Rice for $50,000 out of a solid runner-up effort in mid-June at Ellis Park, returns on the raise in a sign of confidence and seems set to produce a career top effort for his high percentage connections. The pace scenario projects to be moderate, so we’re expecting this son of Practical Joke to be on or near the lead throughout. He’s listed at 6-1 on the morning line, a good gambling number. Prove Right needs to break well from the rail to avoid early traffic trouble and if he does he should be quick enough to gain a strong, forward position. He’s a first-off-the-claim ($50,000) for Patrick Reynolds (decent stats with this angle) following a sharp win over this track and distance last month. Heldish is comfortably drawn outside and should fire his best shot. The Monmouth Park invader has a winning race two back that charts pretty well with these.

      *

      RACE 6: Post: 4:00 ET Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 6-Fierceness
      Backups/Savers/Underneath: 2-Anchises; 1-Air of Defiance.

Forecast: Fierceness, a son of City of Light from first out winning mare, has done everything in the morning like a colt with some quality and should be plenty fit enough for a major effort in his debut for trainer Todd Pletcher. A smooth mover and good athlete with more speed than he’s been allowed to show, the Mike Repole homebred looks like a very live item in a stronger than par six furlong sprint for juveniles. He’s listed as the 2-1 morning line favorite, so he’s no secret.
      *

      RACE 7: Post: 4:34 ET Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 3-Headland
      Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Headland is the 8/5 morning line favorite and almost certainly will go lower in this allowance optional claiming ($62,500) sprint for older fillies and mares. A winner of her last pair with complete authority, she’s very fast on speed figures and has finished first or second in 21 of 39 career starts. She remains above her claim level, and while she might be changing hands (again) after this race, the Linda Rice barn likely has been enticed by the $156,000 purse that will make the two month investment quite worthwhile.

      *

      RACE 8: Post: 5:10 ET Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 1-Avenue Niel/1a-Olkovshkha; 4-Anatolian
      Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: This race has been handicapped for turf. If it is transferred to the main track, we will pass. We’re not sure if both will start, but the entry of Avenue Niel and Olkovshkha looks formidable in this first level allowance grass marathon for fillies and mares. ‘Niel may have been a bit short when third in her U.S. debut over this course and distance following an 11 month layoff earlier this meeting but should be fitter and tighter today for trainer Christophe Clement, who hits at 22% with the second-off-a-layoff angle. Her entry mate, from the Graham Motion barn, had an outing over yielding ground in her U.S. debut at Belmont Park in early July, and while never a real threat in that race she seems likely to step forward considerably. Anatolian, a solid runner-up in the same race Avenue Niel exits, is a one-paced grinder and may have less upside than the others but should at least get a piece of it.

      *

      RACE 9: Post: 5:44 ET Grade: X
Main ticket (in order of preference): 5-Nest
      Backups/Savers/Underneath: 1-Idiomatic.

Forecast: Nest returned as well as she left when winning the Shuvee Stakes over this track and distance last month to extend her perfect streak to three-for-three over the Saratoga main track. A repeat of that race is more than good enough to handle this year’s renewal of the Personal Ensign Stakes-G1. Two easy breezes since raced should tick her over quite nicely. The Todd Pletcher-trained filly is listed at 4/5 on the morning line and probably will go a tick or two shorter.

      *

      RACE 10: Post: 6:18 ET Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 2-Cowichan; 10-Arrasou
      Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: This race has been handicapped for turf. If it is transferred to the main track, we will pass. Cowichan has finished in the frame in all five career starts, so it’s about time that she actually won one. The Irish-bred filly earned a career top speed figure when second in a productive race last time out at Keeneland in April and recent workouts indicate the Wesley Ward-trained sophomore should be ready for another forward move off the bench. Arrasou finished a distant third in an off-the-turf affair last month in her debut and is likely to improve a bunch today, assuming she gets a chance to do her thing on grass. Trainer Chad Brown hits at 30% with second timers, and Irad Ortiz, Jr. rides her back. ‘Nuff said.

Al Cimaglia: Hoosier Park Late Pick 4 Analysis

        August 25, 2023 | By Al Cimaglia
Hoosier Park has a 14-race card set to begin the weekend. The 0.50 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 11, and it will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

        Race 11 (10:40 PM EST)

5-Major Attribute (9/2)-Recent form has been dull but has been facing better. Fits well at this level and could offer a square price.
6-Quick And Shady (20-1)-Will swing for a price, went the back half in 53.4 and was a beaten 5th. Can dance with this kind, and there is no true standout in this field.
8-Round Here Buzz (3-1)-Drops, needs a trip and will rely on Mike Oosting finding a live cover flow. Has been camera shy this year (1-23) and hopefully won't be over bet.

        Race 12 (11:02 PM EST)

4-Helpfirstedition (5/2)-Will use this 3-year-old instead of the 9/5 chalk #3. This Essig trainee has been off, but only since
8-8 rather than 7-20 which is the case for Texas Soprano. De Long should have forwardly placed off the gate.
6-Ponda Jet (2-1)-Has taken pictures in 7 of the last 9 races and was 2nd when not winning. Should be on the point or near the lead every step of the way.

        Race 13 (11:24 PM EST)

1-Dirty Image (6-1)-Steps up after drawing off by over 4 lengths. Tetrick sticks and can get the top or land in the 2-hole. Either could work for the top check.
3-Always Floating (12-1)-Dropped to face this kind in last, was 13 lengths back at the first call and finished 5th. Had been facing tougher and could surprise at a big price with a better start.
6-Parklane Odds (3-1)-Got a perfect trip in last and took a picture. May not be as easy this time but is a main player at probably a small price. Oosting steers again and should be racing with the leaders off the gate.

        Race 14 (11:46 PM EST)

1-General Dolan (3-1)-Benefits from some class relief, likes racing near the top of the stack and this post draw should help. Beaten chalk should be a main player and could make amends tonight.
9-Tellmeaboutit (7/2)-The post helps the price and has beaten straight Open company a couple of times in July at HoP. Best to respect, the fractions should be lively, and this veteran can fly down the lane.

        0.50 Late Pick 4

Charles Town Pick 4 Ticket | Friday, Aug. 25

          August 25, 2023 | By Frank Carulli
          CHARLES TOWN PICK 4
          Friday, Aug. 25

A full field of 10 – with a combined 74-214 record and average earnings of $600,000 – is scheduled to run in the $1 million Charles Town Classic this Friday in West Virginia. The Classic is part of an all-stakes Pick 4 with a guaranteed $100,000 pool that shapes up this way:

CT 10th race (9:44 P.M. EST) -- VAHVA, her troubled starting habit as a 2-year-old apparently in the rear-view mirror, is poised for a run at her first stakes victory in the $750,000 Charles Town Oaks (G-3). She can make good use of her speed from the rail in her first try sprinting around two turns and under the lights in a full field of 10 sophomore fillies. She ‘offered a mild late kick’ in the stretch when third in the 6-1/2F Victory Ride (G-3) at Belmont that timed in 1:15-3/5. She chased the late Maple Leaf Mel, a dazzling multiple G-3 winner who led at every call in winning her first five starts, and stakes victor Dazzling Blue, who went wire-to-wire in her first three starts by a combined 16 lengths. Hall of Famer John Velazquez gets the call on tonight’s solo play to lead off the Pick 4.

CT 11th race (10:25 P.M. EST) -- The top three finishers in the G-3 Cornhusker Handicap at Prairie Meadows last month reunite in the featured $1 million Charles Town Classic (G-2) at the same 1-1/8-mile distance. GIANT GAME found front-end gears as needed in a visually strong victory before he set the pace and tired in the G-1 Whitney at Saratoga next out. CALL ME FAST advanced inside on the final turn and made a menacing run abreast of the leader in mid-stretch but flattened out late in the Cornhusker. California-based PERFECT FLIGHT is a must use on the ticket at 15-1 on the morning line. He awakened in an allowance win at Delmar, when he traveled well throughout and burst through a stretch opening, looking more like the horse who was a stakes-winning dirt router and multiple graded-placed turf router as a 3-year-old. DOUBLE CROWN is another longshot to consider after he broke poorly in an allowance victory at Laurel Park, advanced in-hand until the stretch and wore down the pace-controlling favorite.

CT 12th race (10:55 P.M. EST) -- THE SKY IS FALLING will have to defend her title in the $75,000 Sadie Hawkins Stakes from post 10. She made up 9 lengths to win an allowance race that improved her 7F record to 6-for-8, then fired two bullets in the morning works since then. LUCYLOU WHO dueled with a pesky longshot on the backstretch, shook clear on the turn but couldn’t fend off the ‘Sky’ on the stretch-out from 4-1/2F to 7F. MOONLIT SHADOW broke alertly from the outside post against the top pair, backed off a duel to avoid a wide trip and was in contention 4-wide until the stretch. LUCKY BLONDE finished second to Great Spirit (5-7, $170k) in the Sylvia Bishop Memorial Stakes and she could sit an ideal stalking trip while in top form.

CT 13th race (11:25 P.M. EST) -- FANCY CONCHO hasn’t won since he was put up through disqualification in last year’s $75,000 Frank Gall Memorial Stakes. But he held good form and is a live price play off his latest effort. He lost several lengths when squeezed at the start, trailed into the second turn and advanced smartly between rivals to finish a willing third behind odds-on Muad’dib (14-17, $783k), who was entered earlier tonight in the featured Charles Town Classic. SOCIAL CHIC was the disqualified Gall winner last year, but he’s 8/2-2-2 since then with an average 84 Beyer and a :35-3/5 bullet workout last Saturday over the track. In his most recent start, he saved ground after he bumped a rival at the start, ranged into contention for the stretch drive but couldn’t stay with stable-mate and multiple stakes winner Coastal Mission, who is 5-5 at Charles Town. NO CHANGE has eight allowance wins at Charles Town and a stakes win at this distance on his resume, though none from post 10.

          Suggested 50-Cent Ticket
          CT 10th Race: 1
          CT 11th Race: 2, 3, 6, 11

#5 Ruby the Destroyer She's back fresh for this one after trying stakes company on a week's rest back in May, and she might find a perfect trip while tracking the pace on the cutback. Tough.
#2 Mamashavnahotflash She's dangerous on her best day, but she's also got a lot of really dicey running lines on her with hard late fades. Capable player, but I don't have a whole lot of enthusiasm here tonight.
#3 Broadway Dash She's fast enough to be in the picture early, but I wonder if she might have a mild enough pressing gear to avoid taking the worst of this early? Seems playable.
Race Summary Ruby the Destroyer should find a good spot in here while never too far out of things, and the cutback, class drop, and freshening may all combine to get her back to something competitive.
            Remington Park - Race #9
#2 Family Time She scored twice here last season including on one the turf, and the change in scenery might wake her up after the form started to sour against tougher company. Think she can be tough.
#3 Island Hideaway She has some room to bounce back after a dull winter and spring in Louisiana and Texas, as her local form has been pretty solid in the past and she occasionally shows enough positional pace to suggest she can spy the speed players early.
#4 Medella Match A little worried that she might have some company from the rail runner, but either way she's tough here if she can bring her best stuff. I worry she'll get overbet, too.
Race Summary Island Time was no match in Hot Springs this winter, but she's back fresh and has been a good fit when facing the local runners in the past.
            Remington Park - Race #10
#8 Tuff Mandate He might just be too cheap for these, but I like that his form has generally been reliable, and he might trip out from the outside draw with a good spying trip. Hoping a battle unfolds right in front of him.
#3 Big Muckity Nothing wrong with the two starts so far, and there is likely some upside left for this guy with just two career starts under his belt. The win last out was solid on the front end, but I don't think he needs to be there for his best.
#2 Eakly Tactical speed was outrun and never got involved in his season finale last year, but he's back off the bench in a spot where his baseline try from last year would probably hit pretty hard. Obvious player, but I'd think about it if the price starts to get short.
Race Summary Tuff Mandate has some questions to answer here while making his first start over the local footing, but he has been a pretty consistent type so far and could get a pretty sweet go of things at a nice price.

              Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

              Gulfstream Park - Race #1
#7 GRAND BIRDIE (2-1) Best on paper, gets speed to run at, adds blinkers for return.
#8 THANK THE ACADEMY (4-1) Ran second in both long sprints despite troubled starts.
#5 LAVEAU (3-1) Finished second in 5 of 9 starts at Gulfstream, mostly in shorter sprints.
Race Summary GRAND BIRDIE stalked the 7-to-5 winner while 4-wide and finished a clear second in a $35,000 maiden claiming route race. The class drop, June 18 vet scratch and three-month layoff since her last start is cause for concern, but her best effort should win this. Bet to win and place.
              Gulfstream Park - Race #2
#3 BOY O’BOY (9-2) Chased geared-down fave at 1M on turf, better suited to sprinting at this distance.
#5 DUNDIE (2-1) Joseph firster been prepping since May; dam was 4-22 and stakes winner of $115k.
#6 RED DOG (7-2) Returned with Lasix, tipped wide in lane, just missed, objection was disallowed.
Race Summary BOY O’ BOY was no match for the favorite on the Tampa turf, but he ran well with first-time Lasix and has good 5-1/2F main-track form to summon. He was reluctant to load and no factor chasing a fast pace two back, but he finished second twice at 5-1/2F to start his career, the second time against My Billeeboy, who came back with a 16-1 upset in allowance company. Bet to win and place.
              Gulfstream Park - Race #5
#6 LADY DOMINANCE (8-1) Showed little in return, winless on main track, still deserves second look.
#7 ZISISIT (9-5) Upgraded pair of seconds, edged away in slow-paced route as odds-on choice.
#1 MORNING COLORS (9-2) Been unable to carry speed a distance, needs careful rating by Gonzalez.
Race Summary LADY DOMINANCE faded to ninth in a grass route in her 2023 debut, but piled up the checks in a lightly-raced 4-year-old season. She was slowed by the pace in a pair of routes on Gulfstream’s all-weather track, getting beat 4 lengths by Smart Spending (6-22, $126k) while racing wide to cap her $50k season. Play a 6-ALL exacta.

Race 1 - Maiden Claiming - 350y on the Dirt. Purse: $10000 Class Rating: 54

QUARTER HORSE 350Y, FOR ACCREDITED LA BRED MAIDENS, TWO YEARS OLD. WEIGHT, 124 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $5,000.

                    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                    # 9 MONTI POWER JAM 5/1
                    # 7 RF FEAR THE EAGLE 6/1
                    # 8 ONE TUFF CORONA 3/1
MONTI POWER JAM should be supported as the bet in here. Bustamante has one of the best winning percentages in this group of horses with entries running at this distance and surface. The Equibase Speed Fig of 51 from her most recent contest looks very strong in here. Solid jock with trainer figs make this horse a strong betting selection. RF FEAR THE EAGLE - Should expect this pony to be close on the wire versus these racers. ONE TUFF CORONA - Look for a much better effort with the drop. This conditioner has the strongest ROI in this group with entries running at this distance and surface.

                      Race 5 - Trial - 400y on the Dirt. Purse: $2000 Class Rating: 70

QUARTER HORSE 400Y, FOR THREE YEAR OLDS, THAT WERE NOMINATED AND REMAIN ELIGIBLE. WEIGHTS: 122 LBS.

                      RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                      # 1 OKEY PRISSY MOUNTAIN 8/5
                      # 4 ETHAN 9/5
                      # 7 TBT METER READER 6/1
OKEY PRISSY MOUNTAIN is my choice. Earning some nice profits in short contests. Has been racing solidly and has among the best speed in the race for today's distance. With one of the most favorable jockeys in terms of gains at the window, don't count this filly out.

                        Saratoga - Race #4 - Post: 2:52pm - Claiming - 8.5 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $64,000 Class Rating: 95

                        Rating:

                        #7 SPEEDY HANS (ML=8/1)
                        #4 KLICKITAT (ML=8/1)
                        #14 H P MOON (ML=7/2)
                        #1 MICROSECOND (ML=6/1)

SPEEDY HANS - This horse has a lot of class. A good sign in a race on the grass like we have today. This gelding is in nice form. Ran sixth on July 27th. Coming off a sixth place finish at Saratoga, some may pass this horse. I'm not. He just missed hitting the show spot, and has respectable odds today. KLICKITAT - Have to give this gelding a chance. Ran a solid race last race out within the last month or so. Aboard this horse on July 27th and Torres is right back in the irons in today's contest. This gelding is clearly on the improve with speed figures of 75, 80, 88 last three out. H P MOON - This horse is racing on the turf for the first time. He should be tough, coming off a first place finish in his race on January 22nd on a sluggish track. Rice has a very solid win pct in grass routes. This gelding should be ready to win. Lower impost of -6. In my opinion, a movement of 5 is important, so this gelding falls into this category. Rice is good with horses moving to the turf for the first time. You have to figure this gelding is going to be in contention in this race. MICROSECOND - This gelding is in good form, having run a nice race on Jul 27th, finishing fourth. Coming off a fourth place finish at Saratoga, some may pass this horse. I'm not. He just missed hitting the show spot, and has respectable morning line odds today. This gelding is certainly on the improve with speed ratings of 31, 52, 86 last three out.

                        Vulnerable Contenders: #13 DUST DEVIL (ML=2/1), #2 HIGH TIDE (ML=5/2), #5 LANDBISCUIT (ML=3/1),

DUST DEVIL - This probable favorite may be out of condition without any recent morning drills. HIGH TIDE - Hard to take this pony at the odds after the result (tenth) in the last race. This gelding registered a speed fig in his last race which likely isn't good enough today. LANDBISCUIT - Recorded a mediocre speed rating last time around the track in a $25,000 Claiming race on July 27th. Unlikely to see an improved performance off of that rating.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Put your money on #7 SPEEDY HANS on the nose if you can get odds of 7/2 or more

                          Century Mile - Race #7 - Post: 9:15pm - Optional Claiming - 8.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $19,500 Class Rating: 89

                          Rating:

                          #7 PARKING PERMIT (ML=8/1)
                          #3 KYSTONE (ML=5/2)
                          #2 SILVERFOOT (ML=10/1)
                          #5 FLASHFORDANI (ML=3/1)

PARKING PERMIT - The ROI when Malvaez and Walper team up is terrific. Malvaez rode this horse for the first time in the last race and comes right back this time. Look for this one to go straight on to victory at some respectable odds in this event. Ran fourth in last race, but not more than 5 from the lead at the end. KYSTONE - I'll forgive that last race on August 5th when he was a beaten favorite. That race was pretty good for a $17,500 Optional Claiming race and this gelding's speed fig was solid. I like a thoroughbred that manages to hit the board as often as this gelding. Almost always in the money so don't leave him out of your exotic bets. This gelding's last rating garnered on August 5th is at the top in last race speed figs. SILVERFOOT - I like to bet on this handicapping theory, a horse coming back off a good effort within the last month. That recent bullet 47.8 work shows that this gelding is ready for a top race today. The ROI when Nelson and Nicholson partner up is good. Nicholson, the trainer, shows intent by adding Lasix right here. A positive sign. FLASHFORDANI - I really like that latest race on August 11th at Century Mile where he ended up second. Last two races were sprints. Longer races have to be his best game and he should be considered a play in this route.

                          Vulnerable Contenders: #6 CREDIBILITY (ML=4/1), #4 BACKSTREET BOBBY (ML=5/1),

CREDIBILITY - Would have to move up off that fifth place finish last out to make an impact here. BACKSTREET BOBBY - Hard to keep stabbing at this kind of 'bridesmaid' horse.
