Analysis: We are going against the grain to kickoff the 2023 season in week zero and riding the San Diego Aztecs at the buy low price of (-130) on the moneyline. (We bet (-1.5) on the spread as well. The Aztecs opened in the (-4.5) price range as the spread favorite and the betting public has trickled in on the Ohio side throughout the summer to get the spread down to as low as (-1.5) as I type Wednesday afternoon, three days from kickoff. Not surprising at all to see the public money come in on the Bobcats with a strong ending to the 2022 season and the Aztecs dropping each of their last two games last year. However, this plays right into our hand and gives us an artificial “Buy low” entry point. The theme most are talking about in this matchup is Ohio QB Kurtis Rourke, winner of the 2022 MAC Offensive Player of the Year award in an efficient 3,000-yard passing season complete with 25 touchdowns. His older brother has also been good to bettors in the Canadian Football League and NFL preseason recently. (Likely adding to the betting public love.) Although, we project San Diego State to have the QB advantage with Jaylen Mayden behind center. The former Texas high school QB received offers from the likes of Alabama, Georgia and Ohio State. A south paw who shows dynamic athletic ability. The exact attributes that gave this Bobcat defense big issues last season. Lastly, betting the “hot” team coming into the first game of the season based on last year and fading the team that dropped a couple games to end the campaign is common. Factoring in the strength of opponent and caliber of athlete on the roster has been more important in determining the outcome. Asking a MAC conference team to travel across three time zones and win outright against a program that out recruited them year in and year out is a huge ask. San Diego State settles in to Snap Dragon Stadium in year two, uses the August mid day southwest border town weather to their advantage and controls the line of scrimmage. Bet San Diego State.

Analysis: Play: 312 VANDERBILT -18 -110 Bet Size: 4% Line Parameters: 4% play at -19.5 or better 3% play at -20 2% play at -20.5 Hawaii hosted the Commodores to kick off last season. Vanderbilt was a 9-point road favorite and cruised to a 63-10 win. It was only 21-10 at halftime, but the talent gap led to a 42-0 second half. Turnovers were even at 2 each and Vandy out-gained Hawaii by 243 total yards. The Commodores scored on a pair of fumble returns, but this game was a complete blowout regardless. Fast forward to the 2023 opener, this time in Nashville, and I don’t see any reason to expect much of a different result. Hawaii is in Year 2 under coach Timmy Chang. They return only four starters on offense. Yes, they return seven starters on defense, but that defense was awful last season.Vanderbilt is in Year 3 under coach Clark Lea. Vandy was 2-10 in Lea’s first year in 2021, then improved to 5-7 last season. Sophomore QB A.J. Swann took over as the starting QB in the middle of the season last season and was good for 10 TD passes and only 2 INTs while throwing for 1,274 yards. Swann has four of his five starting offensive linemen back from last season (Hawaii only returns 1 OL).Vandy may not have the talent to excel in the SEC, but even a mediocre SEC team is good enough to steamroll a foe from the Mountain West. And it’s not like Hawaii is the class of the MWC either. They may not dominate right out of the gate here, but I have to believe the huge talent gap eventually leads to some serious separation before this game is over. Lay it.
