Jeff Siegel's What You Need to Know - Del Mar - Friday - 9/1/23

    September 1, 2023
“What You Need to Know” – Del Mar
by Jeff Siegel, 1stbet.com Handicapper & Analyst

Specifically designed for the rolling exotic player, Jeff Siegel’s Daily Santa Anita Handicapping Analysis, Wagering Strategies, and Workout Commentary identify those horses that should be included in daily doubles, pick-3s, pick-4s, pick-5s, and the pick-6.

    Grade Descriptions:
    Grade A=Highest degree of confidence
    Grade B=Solid Play.
    Grade C=Least preferred or pass
Grade X=probable winner but likely at odds too short to play

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
    RACE 1: Post: 3:00 PT Grade: B
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 8-Vibez
    Backups/Savers/Underneath: 1-Persia; 4-Spirit Rules.

Forecast: Vibez has trained like a fairly quick filly for her debut, and in this grass grab bag for juvenile fillies the Peter Eurton-trained daughter of Collected seems as good as any. Her sire has done well with turf runners so far (as a son of City Zip, this is not unexpected) and it’ll be interesting to see if this filly runs even better than she works in her first taste of the sod. At 3-1 on the morning line, we’ll make her a win play and main punch in the various rolling exotics.

    *

    RACE 2: Post: 3:33 PT Grade: B
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 3-Sweet Mother Mary; 1-Norah’s Princess
    Backups/Savers/Underneath: 5-Gila.

Forecast: Sweet Mother Mary makes her first start since being claimed out of her maiden winning race for $50,000 by trainer Doug O’Neill and today she stretches out to a distance she’s bred to handle. With another forward move, she can score right back and it’s encouraging that her new connections are protecting her in a sign of confidence. Norah’s Princess returns to dirt for the first time since May of last year and she did earn her diploma on the main track, so perhaps the switch in surface will bring out her best. She gets a break in the weights with the switch to bug boy Torrealba and has recent speed figures that are good enough to win.

    *

    RACE 3: Post: 4:04 PT Grade: X
Main ticket (in order of preference): 7-Rugelach
    Backups/savers/Underneath: 2-Adelie.

Forecast: Rugelach is an Eastern invader seeking valuable ship and win money in this maiden claiming turf miler for fillies and mares in her first start in a seller and the Michael McCarthy-trained daughter of Twirling Candy brings with her speed figures that are more than sufficient to handle this modest assignment. She’s listed as the 8/5 morning line favorite. seems likely to go lower, and is a logical rolling exotic.

    *

    RACE 4: Post: 4:35 PT Grade: C+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 3-Renegade Princess; 5-Morning Addiction
    Backups/Savers/Underneath: 7-Agreetodisagree.

Forecast: Renegade Princess earned a career top speed figure when second at this level over this track and distance in late July and nothing much more should be required to win this $16,000 main track miler. The daughter of Jeranimo projects to settle into a comfortable pace stalking position and then have every chance from the quarter pole home. Morning Addiction is the committed front runner in the field and will take them as far as she can. A three time winner (from six career starts) over the Del Mar dirt track, she moves up from the bottom rung ($8,000) but this group really isn’t that much tougher.

    *

    RACE 5: Post: 5:06 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 3-Brandon’smylawyer
    Backups/Savers/Underneath: 1-Freedom Flyer; 4-Canoodling.

Forecast: Prototype turf sprinter Brandon’smylawyer makes her first start since November for new trainer (and red hot) Peter Eurton and has shown the ability to fire fresh in the past, so we’re expecting a big effort in this five furlong grass dash for third level allowance fillies and mares. The work tab is solid and healthy, and with the presence of top jockey Juan Hernandez the daughter of Astern seems the solid choice. At 5/2 on the morning line, she’s a win play and strong push in the various rolling exotics.

    *

    RACE 6: Post: 5:37 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 3-Poetica
    Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Poetica was more than four lengths clear of the rest in an excellent comeback outing earlier this meeting (and her first start since chasing home Faiza in her debut last November), one that if repeated today should make her very difficult to beat in this extended maiden sprint for fillies and mares. The Peter Eurton-trained daughter of Speightstown shows a couple of easy breezes in the interim to tick her over so at 5/2 on the morning line (and certain to go lower) we’ll make her a win play and rolling exotic single.

    *

    RACE 7: Post: 6:08 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 1-Unwritten Code
    Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Unwritten Code has won her last five starts but she actually regressed according to her speed figures in her most recent race in early March and was wisely given time off after a series of hard, taxing efforts. She returns with a solid series of short but quick drills to have her fit and ready, and from her rail draw she’ll have no choice but to bust out and gain control from the break, something that she is more than capable of doing. In a five furlong turf dash that appears to lack effective late speed, let’s go with the Jorge Periban-trained filly on top and hope to get close to her morning line of 3-1.

    *

    RACE 8: Post: 6:39 PT Grade: C+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 2-Cryptoholic; 9-Noble Union; 4-Son of Thunder
    Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: The finale is a bottom-rung maiden $20,000 seller over a mile for older horses. None of these are trustworthy, but Cryptoholic shows up at this level for the first time and seems sure to be highly competitive based on his numbers and the company lines he’s seen in recent races. He’s raced on dirt only once (his debut), but we wouldn’t think the surface switch should be an issue. Noble Union, away since February of 2022, returns at the bottom as a first time gelding and may have found his friends. He was never all that much, but against this group he’s a fit based on his prior numbers. Son of Thunder is another big class dropper trying to find his level. He’s had 11 chances, but never against a field this soft.

      __________________________________________________ ____________________________
      RACE 1: Post: 1:10 ET Grade: B-
Main ticket: (in order of preference): Vesture; 2-Irish Gent
      Backups/Savers/Underneath: 6-Reverend Moon; 5-Hard Par.

Forecast: Let’s go with a small gamble in the Friday opener, a turf sprint for maiden juveniles. Vesture is a homebred first timer bred for grass who has done some pretty good work in the a.m. on the main track for trainer Al Stall, Jr. The son of Hard Spun hasn’t been asked to show anywhere near his best speed but has turned in some fancy clocking’s and looks fit and ready to outrun his 6-1 morning line, at the very least. The race is loaded with question marks – nothing would surprise us – but this colt can run some and is certain to offer good wagering value. Irish Gent is another newcomer worth a look. The Todd Pletcher-trained colt is a quick-actioned type with some zip, and while we doubt he’s one of the better ones in the barn he may show his best stuff on grass.

      *

      RACE 2: Post: 1:44 ET Grade: B-
Main ticket: (in order of preference): Poseidon’s Mist; 8-My Mane Squeeze
      Backups/Savers/Underneath: 6-Snarky.

Forecast: State bred juvenile fillies sprint six furlongs on the main track in the Spa’s second race. Poseidon’s Mist failed to run to anywhere near expectations when well-backed but far back in her debut, but we’ll give her another chance in this open fray. She adds blinkers and picks up Irad Ortiz, Jr., so if the Monmouth Park-based filly can run, this would be the time and place to show it. My Mane Squeeze closed a gap to be a distant third in her debut and with that race behind her and the addition of the blinkers the Michael Maker-trained daughter of Audible is another that should step forward.

      *

      RACE 3: Post: 2:20 ET Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 3-Khali Magic; 5-Fancy Joke
      Backups/savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Khali Magic has won two of his last three but hasn’t been out since mid-June and is dropping into a claimer, not normally what you’d call a healthy pattern. However, the five year old mare always has been thoroughly genuine and consistent (first or second in 14 of 27 career starts) and has a prior win over the Saratoga main track, so based on the massive purse of this allowance optional claimer ($100,000) the class drop can be justified. Fancy Joke flopped at 4/5 in a similar state-bred affair at Belmont Park in early July but a repeat of her race before last makes her dangerous. She’s probably a need-the-lead type and if she can clear early without undue pressure she could take this field a long way.

      *

      RACE 4: Post: 2:52 ET Grade: X
Main ticket (in order of preference): 2-Carl Spackler
      Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: It’s pretty hard to get past Carl Spackler in this year’s renewal of the Saranac Stakes for 3-year-olds two turning over the inner turf course. An authoritative winner of the Hall of Fame Stakes-G2 over the local lawn three weeks ago, the Chad Brown-trained sophomore earned a giant speed figure in doing so and will crush this group with anything close to that performance today, but at a very short price. The only concern is whether he’ll regress off a hard, fast race with a relatively quick turnaround.

      *

      RACE 5: Post: 3:26 ET Grade: X
Main ticket (in order of preference): Locked
      Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Locked is listed as the 6/5 morning line favorite in this main track maiden miler for juveniles following a highly promising third (off slowly, lagged, stormed home, too late) in a fast, highly rated sprint here last month. The son of Gun Runner almost certainly will improve with distance and experience for trainer Todd Pletcher (24% with second timers) and in a field that appears to be average at best for the level his certain-to-be odds-on price seems justified as a no value rolling exotic single.

      *

      RACE 6: Post: 4:00 ET Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 8-Unicorn Cake; 5-Miss Maximus; 4-Midnight Concerto.
      Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: This race is a split of the second race, a main track sprint for New York-bred juvenile fillies. It’s a wide open affair with several possibilities. The first timer Unicorn Cake looks intriguing at 6-1 on the morning line. The daughter of Cloud Computing is a good moving filly with some ability and hasn’t really been asked to display her best speed in morning trials, so we suspect the Jeremiah Englehart-trained 2-year-old will come out running under the barn’s “go-to” rider Kendrick Carmouche. Miss Maximus is a debut daughter of the promising freshman stallion Maximus Mischief from the Brad Cox barn that has been prepared at Belmont Park out of range of our video cameras. Maybe she can run some. We also haven’t seen Midnight Concerto, the first timer from the Ken McPeek barn that brought $185,000 as a yearling. The relatively brief work tab shows a hint of talent, so at 8-1 on the morning line she’s worth including as well.
      *

      RACE 7: Post: 4:34 ET Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 8-Expand the Map; 4-Root Cause.
      Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Expand the Map has been freshened for nearly three months and can be expected to return to good form in this first level allowance turf affair for fillies and mares. She prefers to settle early and produce a late kick, and with her best effort the Irish-bred filly can be along in time. Trainer Chad Brown’s other entrant, Root Cause, has burned money in her last pair and isn’t one to trust, but she’s lightly raced with room for improvement and ran well over the local lawn when second in her debut last year. She needs cover early before being produced late and should get that type of ride from Flavian Prat.

      *

      RACE 8: Post: 5:10 ET Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 1-Morning Cup; 2-American Law.
      Backups/Savers/Underneath: 5-Gun Maestro, 8-Forced Ranking.

Forecast: Morning Cup, freshened for two months and dropping to a realistic level after a dull try when routing on grass in a tougher starter’s allowance ($50,000) event, lands the good rail and projects to be part of the pace throughout in this seven furlong $25,000 seller. The Linda Rice-trained gelding catches what projects to be a favorable race flow and if he can establish the running the son of Hard Spun could get brave. American Law is strong in the speed figure department and is a “must use” on that basis alone, but he’s never been one to count on (one win, 11 seconds, or thirds in 15 starts) and most recently was a beaten favorite when a moderate third at Monmouth Park in late July. This will be his first start in a claimer and the class drop is warranted, so if he’s on his game he’ll be running on late from a second flight, stalking position.

      *

      RACE 9: Post: 5:44 ET Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 8-Disarmed; 10-Saint Selby
      Backups/Savers/Underneath: 3-King Moonracer.

Forecast: Disarmed has won three of his last four starts with gradually rising speed figures and has developed into turf sprinting specialist since being transferred to the sod last spring. The state-bred son of Maclean’s Music moves up a level on the allowance ladder and probably will need to produce another forward move, but in his present from he could be capable of doing just that. His morning line of 7/2 seems reasonable. Saint Selby is fast on speed figures but unproven on grass. He’s raised from the $25,000 level but is good enough to act in this league if he can duplicate his dirt form on turf. At 6-1 on the morning line, you have to use him.

      *

      RACE 10: Post: 6:18 ET Grade: C
Main ticket (in order of preference): 9-Deputy Connect; 10-Justice Department
      Backups/Savers/Underneath: 8-Proven Hope.

Forecast: Deputy Connect plummets from starters allowance ($50,000) to restricted (nw-2) $16,000 and the big drop is warranted as the Brad Cox-trained colt finished sixth beaten double digits as the even money favorite over this track and distance three weeks ago. It’s hard to gauge in his present form whether he’ll snap to life against this group but he’s certainly capable of handling this assignment with anything close to his best effort. Justice Department is another being tossed into the scrap heap, as this barn will often do with expensive yearlings that fail to live up to expectations. The son of Gun Runner, in just his fifth career start and a maiden special weight winner three runs back, will add blinkers for the first time and return to dirt, so a form reversal at this level certainly is possible. Tread lightly here.

Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

        September 1, 2023 | By Al Cimaglia
Yonkers Raceway has a compact 9-race card to kick-off the weekend. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 6, and it will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

        Race 6 (8:40 PM EST)

3-Lyons Johnny JNR (5-1)-Comes out of an odd race as the 3/5 chalk was last going into the 1st turn. Siegelman took back from the rail and followed 2 price shots. Then needed to come 1st over and provided cover to the eventual winner. Using and looking for better decisions from the same pilot.
5-Cold Creek Felipe (3-1)-Beat the $15k claimers now takes a good step up but there isn't anyone who looks dominant. Money showed in last and might be over bet here but Brennan could work another pocket trip.
6-Brackley Beach (4-1)-This isn't my favorite horse and its 1-26 record is cause to shy away. But this is a short field without much gate speed. My guess is Kakaley has the pedal down and tries to wire this crew, and even if successful will most likely make it an adventure.

        Race 7 (9:00 PM EST)

5-Drama Act (2-1)-Beaten 2/5 chalk simply ran into a better horse in Karma Seelster and had a 2-race win streak snapped. Going first over a long way didn't help. Brennan could work a smoother trip and start a new win streak.

        Race 8 (9:20 PM EST)

1-Gothic Rock (7/2)-Drops, gets post relief and should be able to hold position off the gate. This veteran needs a good steer by Boyd but should be in the mix at the wire.
2-Tyga Hanover (5-1)-Comes off a win at Philly which was aided by a pocket ride and could be in line for a similar journey. Steps up but fits in a race without a standout.
3-Cyrus N (7/2)-Raced from the back and did pace the 2nd half in 55.1. Will look for a more aggressive steer by Lachance in the 3rd start off the bench.

        Race 9 (9:40 PM EST)

1-Lit De Rose (8/5)-This is the best horse but isn't a lock from the rail, my take is the veteran is better chasing a target than on the engine. Lachance could work a different trip or might be good enough to wire the field. Either way its best to not overlook.
4-Lucky Artist A (7/2)-The veteran steps up coming off a win and this is the 3rd start after taking a few weeks off. Has the gate speed to either land on the point or in the pocket behind the chalk and is a main threat.

Saratoga Pick 4 Ticket | Friday, Sept. 1

          September 1, 2023 | By Frank Carulli
          SARATOGA PICK 4
          Friday, Sept. 1

A pair of turf allowances and a pair of 10-horse claiming races make for a potentially lucrative Late Pick 4 payout at Saratoga this Friday. The 50-cent wager is a good starting point for an exciting Labor Day weekend of racing. Here’s a closer look:

SAR 7th race (4:34 P.M. EST) -- EXPAND THE MAP rallied for second at 7F and one mile in allowance company and appeared ready to launch a bid last out when she was bothered by a fallen rival, losing all chance. Like her the most among the favorites, but I’m also using longshot pace players SWOOP TO FINISH and I’M SO SORRY on the ticket. SWOOP TO FINISH shows two turf route attempts on firm footing. She ‘took command’ at the quarter pole in a maiden win over Buttered Toast, who made a last-to-first move at 30-1 in allowance company in her only grass start since then. Then she raced close-up throughout at 1-1/4 miles before stakes repeater Sister Seagull passed by in her turf debut. I’M SO SORRY was hustled early in a 1-3/8-mile marathon, chased the pace to the far turn and back-pedaled while the deep closers arrived. She adds blinkers in her second start for Maker, who wins at 19 percent with second-off-the-layoff types.

SAR 8th race (5:10 P.M. EST) -- AMERICAN LAW continued to burn money on the class drop from the allowance ranks last out, but he was bumped around at the start and finished with a good surge for third and good gallop out. He broke his maiden at this distance and finished second in a triple key race at 7F next out. FIGHT FIERCELY bid 3-wide to a brief stretch lead at one mile before a pair of sub 2-to-1 favorites got the money. The well-traveled 3-year-old has been dismissed at 9-2 odds or less in 10 of 13 starts but should offer better value today.

SAR 9th (5:44 P.M. EST) -- KING MOONRACER tracked a pace battle in the second flight, swung 5-wide in early stretch while the winner slipped through on the rail and finished third in a blanket finish at this distance. He is reunited with New York-bred rivals and gets plenty of pace to rally into. ICY FLAVOR went 2-for-2 on the grass in California as a 3-year-old, now makes his seasonal debut as a gelding in a new barn. He ran 1/5 slower than a same-day, $50,000 starter allowance when he broke his maiden, defeated a pair of runners-up who are a combined 19/5-5-1 with $203,000 in earnings and faces nine rivals are 12-for-78 on turf.

SAR 10th race (6:18 P.M. EST) -- JUSTICE DEPARTMENT and BROOKLYN DIAMONDS class drop for the meet’s top two trainers, but both will be undervalued in a field that is a combined 3-for-27 at one mile. Hit the ‘ALL’ button.

          Suggested 50-Cent Ticket
          SAR 7th Race: 5, 7, 8
          SAR 8th Race: 2, 4
          SAR 9th Race: 1, 3
          SAR 10th Race: ALL
          Cost: $60
