Thursday MLB Free play. My selection is on the 'under' between Arizona and New York at 4:10 pm et on Thursday.
A pair of underrated starting pitchers will take the ball on Thursday afternoon in Queens as the Diamondbacks send Merrill Kelly to the hill against Kodai Senga of the Mets. Kelly has struck out 18 in 12 2/3 innings over his last two starts. On the season he has compiled a 3.27 ERA and 1.19 WHIP in 26 outings. Current Mets hitters are just 12-of-46 with only five extra-base hits off of Kelly. Kodai Senga has quietly held opponents to less than seven hits per nine innings this season. Command has certainly been an issue at times but I like his chances of holding the D'Backs bats at bay here. Current Arizona hitters have gone a woeful 4-for-25 with just one extra-base hit off of Senga. The D'Backs bullpen is in the pocket right now, entering last night's contest sporting a sub-2.00 ERA and 1.00 WHIP over the last seven games. Mets relievers have struggled lately but remain in good shape, entering last night's affair having worked just 20 innings over the last seven contests. Take the under.
I'll take my chances with the Rangers as a +144 road dog against the Blue Jays in Thursday's series finale. Texas has dominated the first 3 games in this series, winning 10-4 on Monday, 6-3 on Tuesday and 10-0 on Wednesday. Rangers have won 5 in a row overall. No way should Texas be this big of a dog on Thursday. Especially with the likes of Nathan Eovaldi on the mound. Eovaldi is 11-4 with a 2.90 ERA and 1.068 WHIP in 21 starts. He's 6-1 with a 2.76 ERA and 1.088 WHIP in 11 road starts. Kevin Gausman is on the mound for Toronto and this has not been a profitable spot for the Blue Jays. Toronto is a mere 4-12 over the last 3 seasons in his 16 starts as a home favorite of -125 to -175. Give me the Rangers +144!
If you don't mind laying some chalk, we think the Twins will lay the hammer down here in the opener of this three-game series. Minnesota just lost two of three at home to the Rays. The White Sox lost two of three at home to the Royals. Despite only being 4-7 with a 4.65 ERA and 1.26 WHIP, Kenta Maeda has been slowly improving his stats over the last month. The same can't be said though of White Sox starter Jose Urena, who continues to struggle with an 0-4 record and a ballooned 9.82 ERA and 2.24 WHIP. Consider the Twins!
