Jeff Siegel's What You Need to Know - Santa Anita - 10/06/23

    October 6, 2023
“What You Need to Know” – Santa Anita
by Jeff Siegel, 1stbet.com Handicapper & Analyst

Specifically designed for the rolling exotic player, Jeff Siegel’s Daily Santa Anita Handicapping Analysis, & Wagering Strategies identify those horses that should be included in daily doubles, pick-3s, pick-4s, pick-5s, and the pick-6.

    *
    Grade Descriptions:
    Grade A=Highest degree of confidence
    Grade B=Solid Play.
    Grade C=Least preferred or pass
Grade X=probable winner but likely at odds too short to play

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
    RACE 1: Post: 1:00 PT Grade: B
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 1-Den of Inequity; 4-Star of the Night.
    Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Den of Inequity stayed on nicely to finish a willing, if not one paced, runner-up in her debut at Del Mar in mid-August and can be expected to move forward with that race under her belt for a barn that has solid stats with the second time starter angle. This nine furlong trip should help as well, so despite the fact that leading rider Juan Hernandez opts for the 9/5 morning line favorite Star of the Night we’ll stick with this Michael McCarthy-trained daughter of Roaring Lion, who earned a much better speed figure than ‘Night in each of their racing debuts. The latter has plenty of room to improve as well and is a “must use” somewhere on your rolling exotic ticket.

    *

    RACE 2: Post: 1:30 PT Grade: B
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 4-Smuggler’s Run.
    Backups/Savers/Underneath: 6-Good Juju, 5-Established.

Forecast: Smuggler’s Run takes a realistic class drop after hitting the board in a pair of considerably stronger races and in a sign of confidence remains above his claim level in this extended sprint for $25,000 platers. Twice a winner in three career starts over the Santa Anita main track, the Peter Miller-trained gelding has the perfect stalking style for this extended sprint trip and recent speed figures that are good enough to beat this field. He’s the co-second choice at 5/2 on the morning line and will offer decent value at that price if you can get it.

    *

    RACE 3: Post: 2:04 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 2-Sand to Sea; 6-Dusty Springfield
    Backups/savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Sand to Sea, in the frame in both starts when failing by less than a length in each outing, returns to a turf sprint today and seems well-spotted to graduate in this maiden special weight affair for state-bred fillies and mares. The daughter of Danzing Candy has rising numbers and good tactical speed, so with another forward move today she’ll be hard to beat unless one of the first timers turn up hot. Dusty Springfield, a debuting daughter of Grazen, has been training exclusively at Los Alamitos, so we don’t have any video workouts to lean on, but she has winning connections and grass breeding combined with the presence of top rider Juan Hernandez. We’re “Wishin’ and Hopin’ that she is good enough to be competitive in a soft affair.

    *

    RACE 4: Post: 2:36 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 3-Memes .
    Backups/Savers/Underneath: 1-Montana.

Forecast: Memes has little to beat in this maiden $20,000 main track miler and although he’s a 10-race maiden at not one to trust (nothing in here is), he could easily be a better type off the 11 month layoff for new trainer Phil D’Amato. We’re expecting bug boy Torrealba to have him on or near the lead throughout for a barn that has superior stats with comebackers. He’s the 9/5 morning line favorite and probably will go a bit lower.

    *

    RACE 5: Post: 3:06 PT Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 3-Carmen Miranda; 6-Stressed.
Backups/Savers/Underneath: 1-M is for Magic; 2-Wet My Beak.

Forecast: Carmen Miranda looks well-spotted in this six furlong turf sprint for second level allowance fillies and mares. In the frame in all five starts over the local lawn, the daughter of Stanford always has been genuine and versatile and employs an effective pace-stalking style that can cope with any type of race flow. Beaten a neck when fourth vs. similar at Del Mar last time out, she gets an extra furlong to work with today, has trained quite well in the interim, retains Ramon Vasquez, and rates a slight edge with her best effort. Stressed has won three of six over the Santa Anita turf course and is fresh from a game score at this level at Del Mar in mid-August. She seems certain to provide a strong pace presence from her outside draw and be very tough on the lead or from an outside stalking position.

    *

    RACE 6: Post: 3:38 PT Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 2-Big Gun.
    Backups/Savers/Underneath: 1-Noble Union.

Forecast: Big Gun was nosed out in a similar bottom-rung maiden claiming main track miler at Del Mar when more than four lengths clear of the rest, and anything close that effort today should be more than good enough to earn him his diploma. From a comfortable inside draw, the Mr. Big gelding should draft into an ideal ground-saving position while always close to what should be a soft pace and then have every chance from there. However, at 8/5 on the morning line and likely to go lower he won’t be offering much in the way of wagering value.
    *

    RACE 7: Post: 4:10 ET Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 3-Don’t Ju Forget; 6-Unwritten Code.
    Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Don’t Ju Forget has much in her favor in this California-bred first level allowance turf sprint and if you can get close to her morning line of 3-1 you’ll have a value play. The Peter Miller-trained filly turns back to her preferred distance, has solid recent form, and broke her maiden over this course and distance last November. She has enough early speed to secure a good stalking position and should prove hard to deny when the pressure is turned on through the lane. Unwritten Code is strictly the one to beat and a “must use” in rolling exotic play. A winner of six races from 14 starts including a runaway score over this turf course when facing $25,000 foes last winter, the daughter of Desert Code gets off the rail and catches a field that may not be able to match her kind of early zip. The main concern is that she’s noticeable slower on speed figures than our top pick.

    *

    RACE 8: Post: 4:43 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 5-Practical Move
    Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Santa Anita Derby winner Practical Move returns in this second level allowance main track miler facing older horses for the first time and will be racing with Lasix following a series of sharp drills that should have him fit and ready. If he’s going to make a Breeders’ Cup race (Dirt mile or Classic), the son of Practical Joke needs to show he has retained all of his class and speed and everything he’s done in the morning indicates that he has. Based on numbers, he’s simply too good for this group but at 8/5 on the morning line he'll be a fairly short price, though deservedly so.

    *

    RACE 9: Post: 5:14 PT Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 11-Willa T; 3-Mocha Grande; 4-Blue Oasis.
    Backups/Savers/Underneath: 5-Persia.

Forecast: Willa T was given a relatively easy race when closing on her own courage to be third in her debut at Del Mar last month and today we’re expecting to see a more serious effort. The Tim Yakteen-trained filly likely will drop in from her far outside post and settle early before being cut loose at the quarter pole. With some help up front she could make some serious noise close home. Mocha Grande and Blue Oasis both have experience around two turns, and both have room to improve. However, it’s possible they could hook up early and engage in a faster pace than is ideal, and if that happens, all the better for our top selection.,

Al Cimaglia: Hawthorne Racecourse Late Pick 4 Analysis

      October 6, 2023 | By Al Cimaglia
Hawthorne Racecourse has a 12-race card scheduled with the 0.50 Late Pick 4 starting in Race 9. The sequence has a $10,000 guaranteed pool, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

      Race 9 (9:50 PM CST)

7-Fox Valley Kodiak (10-1)-Game effort last time against this kind to finish a close third. Gets a new set of hands in Smolin, maybe that helps. Seems to be on the improve and starting inside instead of post 7 could make a difference.
8-Fox Valley Durham (2-1)-Comes off a sharp effort to win at this class by drawing off by 5 lengths. Post 8 could make it more of a challenge but has been a cut above the rest.

      Race 10 (10:10 PM CST)

1-Isle Coach (7/2)-The Kevin Miller pupil drops in for a tag and Bates takes the lines. Should relish the company and might look to wire the field.
4-Westwind Ideal (4-1)-Had an even effort in last and now drops. Warren sticks and will look for improvement in the 3rd start since shipping in from Hoosier Park.
9-Telstar (8-1)-Should be a solid price, and this will be the 1st time for Stewart to take a spin. Showed some life last week and was hung the mile but still went the back half in 56.1. Looking for a better drive and finish.

      Race 11 (10:30 PM CST)

1-Ice Dance (7/2)-Not liking the short price but this is the 3rd race here after shipping in from HoP and the mare may have met a beatable field. Warren sticks and should be forwardly placed off the gate.
3-Lion Virgin (15-1)-This mare has decent last quarters but needs more heart to post a win. Is in a position to get sucked around and should be a large price in a race without a standout.
6-Red Clover (4-1)-The 3-year-old is only 2 for 27 and loses Stewart. But Seekman can do the job and has been close finishing 2nd by a length or less in the last 2 races. Beaten even money chalk should be a better price and it's probably wise to not overlook.

      Race 12 (10:50 PM CST)

3-Rockin Q (12-1)-Won off an efficient trip and won't be facing claimers tonight but at this price is worth a swing. Was driven aggressively last week and will look for similar tonight.
5-Racin For Royalty (5-1)-Ohio bred shiped in from Aces and had a decent try last time. Could be better here, loses Leonard but Svendsen can provide a good steer. Might be overlooked and is a threat if steps up off the last effort.
7-Gottalovemyshadow (7/2)-Knows how to win on a 1-mile oval and had a good try in its Haw debut. Warren sticks and reliability is not a strong suit at this class. This veteran mare is still a better horse than others in this field and is a player with a smooth trip.

      0.50 Late Pick 4

      7,8/1,4,9/1,3,6/3,5,7
      Total Bet=$27

        Keeneland All-Stakes Pick 3 Ticket | Friday, Oct. 6

        October 6, 2023 | By Frank Carulli
        KEENELAND ALL-STAKES PICK 3
        Friday, October 6

Keeneland’s opening day of the Fall Meet makes the grade on several fronts. The 50-cent Late Pick 3 encompasses 31 entries and the Grade 2 Ogden Phoenix at 6F, Grade 2 Jessamine at 1-1/16 miles on the turf and the Grade 1 Alcibiades at the same distance for 2-year-old fillies on the main track. Here’s a closer look:

KEE 7th race (4:12 P.M. EST) -- SIBELIUS, the beaten favorite in the G-2 Ogden Phoenix last year, rebounded with three consecutive stakes victories, capped by the Grade 1 Dubai Golden Shaheen in March. Now he must bounce back again after two sub-par efforts on his return to the states this summer. He starts fresh and his September work tab at Palm Meadows suggests he might do so. GULFSTREAM WAY is unproven in graded stakes company and only 1-for-8 this year, but he has blossomed for trainer Norm Casse since a $40,000 claim in May and at least is peaking while others in the race are not. He raced with no Lasix last out and just missed after a long duel with BANGO, who won his seventh stakes race at Churchill Downs and fifth at this distance. DOCTOR OSCAR, a wire-to-wire winner in his last three starts on Canterbury Downs’ main track by a combined 16-3/4 lengths, gets the class test today. He averaged a 98 Beyer in those three victories and warrants a long look for Pick 3 purposes.

KEE 8th race (4:44 P.M. EST) -- TIME TO DAZZLE did just that in her debut turf route at Woodbine. She saved ground from just off the pace under a snug hold, angled to the 2-path at the top of the stretch and ran away from the pace-setting runner-up. TOUPIE romped first out on dirt, then ran second to multiple stakes winner No Nay Mets (3-4, $183k) in a triple key grass sprint against the boys that produced Laurel Futurity runaway winner Air Recruit. SMOOTH WAVES ran 3/5 of a second faster than older MSW boys on the same card at Kentucky Downs to romp at one mile; however, the 11 rivals she faced have yet to produce a speed figure above 56. PHAROAH’S WINE gets a spot on the ticket after she showed marked improvement in her third start and ‘finished strong’ to hold off the late runners to break her maiden.

KEE 9th race (5:16 P.M. EST) -- BRIGHTWORK won at four distances in as many starts, repelled troubled favorite Ways And Means in the Grade 1 Spinaway at Saratoga, now goes a route of ground for the first time off a pair of fast 4F works over the track. His sire, Outwork, won the G-1Wood Memorial at 1-1/8 miles. V V’S DREAM handled the stretch-out in distance with flying colors, making an eye-catching, 3-wide move at the 5/16s pole to win the G-2 Pocahontas going away at one mile. EMERY lived up to the hype in his 6F debut at Saratoga and must be respected for a high-percentage barn with the 2-year-old, sprint-to-route and ‘repeat’ angles.

        Suggested 50-Cent Ticket
        KEE 7th Race: 3, 4, 9
        KEE 8th Race: 2, 5, 8
        KEE 9th Race: 5, 6, 7
        Cost: $13.50

          Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

          Remington Park - Race #7
#9 Okie Attitude Lots to like here with some speed that should be enough to get her into a good spot into the first turn, and she should be right up on the pace in a race where that might be the place to be.
#7 Expensive Liaison Think she makes some sense while dropping out of that good run in stakes company last out, but I could see her coming along a little too late to land top honors today.
#4 Va Voom She was one-paced in the run here back in August, but her only two-turn try on the main track produced her only win, and I think she's going to at least be in the right kind of spot heading into the far turn.
Race Summary Okie Attitude has been heading in the right direction since a dull debut run, and I think she has some appeal right back with winners in a race where her speed should give her rider the chance to place her right on or neat the pace early.
          Remington Park - Race #8
#3 Fee Think Asmussen probably has this one locked down between this one and #6 Perilous Life, who also makes a lot of sense. This filly beat 'Life when they met in June and just missed last out. I'd expect her to hold his form again.
#4 Kiss Upon a Star She woke up with a little pace last out when facing a cheaper bunch, but maybe she's stepping up at the right time with the ability to get in the mix early again today.
#2 Jenny's Penny She's got a little bit of speed and should be right up on the pace in a spot without a ton of committed front-end speed. Among the pressing threats.
Race Summary Fee and Perilous Life both should be in good spots to finish this one off for the same barn, and maybe getting Kiss Upon a Star in the picture while rising in good form is the way to spice the race up a bit.
          Remington Park - Race #9
#2 La Batalla He'll get around two turns for the first time in a race that has a lot of stretchout players, but I think he might end up on the front end while the rest sort themselves out just behind him. At least that's the hope...
#7 C W Prize His 9/1 debut score was pretty solid, and he looked good rallying late that day. Wouldn't be a shock to see him build on that nice effort and land another one right back.
#1 Rachel's Caper No real argument for me here as this one just missed to a logical finishing winner last time out, and he is quick enough to sit quite a bit closer while routing again today. He's the proven route player.
Race Summary La Batalla might really like a mile trip, and I'm hoping the rest of the forward players will be trying to settle into more relaxed pressing spots. If he doesn't take a ton of heat and finds a comfortable rhythm, he's probably tough here.

            Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

            Gulfstream Park - Race #1
#1 MAKE EM TAP (3-1) Steady route form, ran well fresh in July, runs for cheapest tag yet.
#3 NOWITZKI (5-1) Failed to sustain middle move for twice this much off the claim.
#2 SPREADER (9-2) Improved numbers since claim, tracked slow pace in latest, takes class hike.
Race Summary MAKE EM TAP broke his maiden for $16,000 on the Colonial Downs turf two starts back and his prior two route attempts on Gulfstream’s all-weather surface were good enough to win in this spot. He dueled from post 10 after an ‘unprepared start’ early in the year, then finished a troubled third behind a winner who came back to finish second for a $20,000 tag. Bet to win and place.
            Gulfstream Park - Race #3
#5 BLAZINGLY (2-1) Sat good trip off duel, then gamely out-kicked the favorite to prevail.
#1 LIGHT AND PATH (6-1) Won for $25k on turf and all-weather track in last four starts with Zayas up.
#2 DEMURELY (3-1) Top money-earner in field stands 7/1-3-2 at this level this year.
Race Summary Class droppers abound in this nw/3 sprint for fillies and mares. BLAZINGLY gets top billing after she out-dueled favored and next-out winner Amor Y Control in the stretch at 5F. She returns off similar rest for a barn that boasts a 28-percent ‘repeat’ rate. Bet to win and place.
            Gulfstream Park - Race #6
#3 BIG EFFECT (3-1) Stretch drift proved costly, adds blinkers, gets call in wide-open race.
#4 GENERAL LEDGER (9-5) Took the money and ran to debut win for Joseph, worked fast since then.
#2 SAINT NO MORE (4-1) Survived a duel and drew away to overdue maiden victory at 6F.
Race Summary BIG EFFECT followed the odds-on favorite behind a good pace battle, only to drift 6-wide at the top of the stretch and fade while not changing leads. Blinkers could make the difference for a promising 2-year-old who posted a big number in second-out MSW romp. Bet to win and place.

Race 7 - Maiden Special Weight - 8.0f on the Dirt. Purse: $90000 Class Rating: 84

FOR MAIDENS, TWO YEARS OLD. WEIGHT, 119 LBS.

                  RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                  # 5 HUNT BALL 7/2
                  # 9 DRUM ROLL PLEASE 2/1
                  # 4 PENTATHLON 12/1
HUNT BALL looks respectable to best this field. This colt is a solid choice based on his earnings per start in dirt route events. This colt with Alvarado in the irons makes him a solid choice. Alvarado has very solid numbers that point to this colt to be a very strong contender. DRUM ROLL PLEASE - Is a contender - given the 79 speed fig from his most recent race. Cox has this colt racing well and is a competitive pick based on the decent speed figures posted in route races recently. PENTATHLON - Had one of the strongest speed figures of this field in his last race. Is hard not to consider based on speed figs which have been very good - 68 avg - of late.

                    Gulfstream Park - Race #1 - Post: 12:50pm - Claiming - 8.3 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $22,000 Class Rating: 77

                    Rating:

                    #2 SUPER SPREADER (ML=9/2)
                    #1 MAKE 'EM TAP (ML=3/1)

SUPER SPREADER - You'll be making money right and left by turning your racing money onto this jockey/trainer combination. I like to wager on this handicapping theory, a pony coming back off a good race within the last thirty days. MAKE 'EM TAP - I think Gulfstream Park players know a good thing when they see the jockey/trainer twosome of Zayas and Cazares. Their winning pct together has been good.

                    Vulnerable Contenders: #7 DUBSTEP (ML=7/2), #4 ARTICO (ML=4/1), #3 NOWITZKI (ML=5/1),

DUBSTEP - Trying to beat this entrant today at the reward of 7/2. ARTICO - On a downward moving cycle. Equibase speed figures keep declining. NOWITZKI - Hasn't been close at all recently. Don't believe this entrant will make a winning move in today's race. That last speed figure was mediocre when compared with today's class rating.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: #2 SUPER SPREADER is going to be the play if we are getting 5/2 or better

                      RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                      # 7 WAKE SURF 15/1
                      # 15 COWBOY JUSTICE (GB) 20/1
                      # 12 POINT ME BY 10/1
I have to support WAKE SURF for this race particularly if the morning line of 15/1 holds. Will probably come out strong - I have liked the way this gelding has moved promptly to the front end recently. Is a contender - given the 101 Equibase Speed Figure from his most recent race. POINT ME BY - Is hard not to consider based on Equibase Speed Figs which have been quite good - 97 avg - of late. One of the most respectable win percentages between this jock and trainer make this horse dangerous.

                        Rating:

                        #2 TIMESATAPPIN (ML=8/1)
                        #6 DECEITFUL (ML=4/1)

TIMESATAPPIN - You probably want to discount that last race at Thistledown on a track listed as good where he finished off the board. Should do well in this field without the off-track conditions. DECEITFUL - This thoroughbred could be close at the end. He's got a wonderful late kick. Finished fifth at Thistledown last out. Was close at the end and at odds of 4/1 today, he looks like a possible contender.

                        Vulnerable Contenders: #3 PERMAFROST (ML=2/1), #1 POT COMMITTED (ML=3/1), #7 QUARANTINO (ML=6/1),

PERMAFROST - This gelding didn't race too well last time. POT COMMITTED - You always figure that this horse has a shot to be victorious, but he just misses regularly. QUARANTINO - Trying to beat this horse this time at the price of 6/1.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #2 TIMESATAPPIN to win if you can get at least 5/2 odds
